This film chronicles Queen’s meteoric rise from underground innovators to global superstars and follows the transformative journey of their charismatic frontman, Freddie Mercury. Rami Malek delivers an Oscar-winning performance as Freddie Mercury (celebrated for his riveting turns in Mr. Robot and The Little Drummer Girl), capturing the raw energy and magnetic presence of the iconic singer. The film also features standout portrayals by Ben Hardy as the virtuosic guitarist Brian May (known for his role in the Netflix series, Small Axe), Gwilym Lee as drummer Roger Taylor, and Joseph Mazzello as the reserved bassist John Deacon, each bringing their own dynamic flair to the ensemble. T&A break down every unforgettable moment—from the triumphant studio sessions where Queen crafted timeless hits like "Bohemian Rhapsody," "We Will Rock You," and "We Are the Champions," to the pulse-pounding recreation of the legendary Live Aid performance that redefined rock history. Oh, yeah, thank you for that reminder.
Think it's a Wednesday.
Wild Card Wednesday.
Okay, I think we are ready to go.
Let's freaking do this.
Let's do it.
Give us a count down, Tara.
All right.
Three, two, one.
So good.
Thanks to Prepper for helping edit down these highlights.
We super appreciate you.
Also, Eric at NerdKrona.
He does some juice for us as well.
He's a great editor.
Also, don't forget to go to RejectNationshop.com.
Get your gear.
This is a new one by the Sheecks.
It's a crop top.
We got different colors.
And he's rocking the Reject crew neck.
Everybody loves it.
Always.
So comfy wearing it.
Yeah, it's a super comfy one.
We love comfort colors and that's what the sweater's in.
That's what these shirts are in.
So get your hands on one.
Okay.
How do you feel?
Two thoughts.
I mean, I'm like inspired and also sad as well.
It's an incredible story, definitely worthy of being told on film.
Again, as I mentioned before, I didn't know a ton about the band other than the couple
songs that I knew from what I've heard on film and obviously on the radio and stuff.
But I thought it was a very incredible story.
I don't know what was, you know, obviously, we'll look.
look up some of the trivia when we get to it.
Maybe they'll tell us some of what was Hollywoodized and some of what was not.
But it definitely makes me want to look more into them just because I find the whole thing
so fascinating, just, you know, Freddie and the band and all that.
But it was, I do love the way the film was structured.
I like the nonlinear storytelling of starting at the live aid and then like slowly just
showing how they rose to fame, how, you know, Freddie was such a big fan of the band.
And, you know, through perfect timing, I guess their lead singer just said later piece out.
And then Freddie kind of took over from there.
So, yeah, I just thought it was really fascinating, just a fascinating time for that band, how they rose to power.
And how also, too, like in Mike Myers' character, he really, I wouldn't say didn't believe in them.
but, I mean, in terms of, you know, like, he didn't, I guess, like, the whole thing was, like,
they had to have a certain amount of time, and, like, they were, like, you know, we don't, we don't go by the norms.
We go by our way.
And I appreciated that.
Like, sometimes that's what you need to push the needle.
You got to go by your way.
And I like that.
I like that when, you know, what artists can, you know, aren't like pencil pushers or, like, you know, aren't.
go by group think they do things their way and i i think i appreciate that about queen especially
freddie like and i like to i really came to appreciate too with on the band like for all the
struggles and all the arguments like at the the core and the theme was family and i do like he
he did find a a deep affection and appreciation for the crew like uh the band rather because like
when he went off to the other one uh yes they weren't as talented as him as this band rather when he
when he was uh becoming a solo artist but also he noticed like yeah they're all yes people and like
yeah in life that's just a good message just in general like if you just have yes people around
you like you're not going to succeed very much in life so i thought that was fascinating you need
you need to have people that you know let you know like hey not the best thing they're probably
not that's not going to work okay we need to do this yeah arguments do suck but if it gets you to
the where you need to be like like what's the end goal here you know what i mean so i i did like that
um also too i know we hated his character but i thought the performance by that actor who
played paul he's great he's great because he hated his guts yeah um obviously um got to mention
what is the obvious rami malloc i hope i said his name he was phenomenal he was
everyone gave great performances i really i really enjoyed everyone's performance but he's he stood out
Agreed.
I would equate this to, I mean, just obviously films about biographic singers.
Yeah.
I would say it's right up, if not better.
It's, again, right up to the level of incredible standard by Austin Butler is Elvis Presley
and Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison and the doors.
Those are just like what I equate to the standard of incredible performances by biography, biographic singers.
And like this dude, like he embodied.
the role when I heard him sing when he wasn't singing like he was Freddie Mercury like he just
like sunk into the role and I just like that's my favorite type of um way to watch a movie is
when you don't see the actor yeah and like he just really like is it's it's just incredible to
watch and I believe that's his actual voice I wouldn't be surprised I mean he looked like he was
really doing little ways in the songs and I'm not positive on this that he's
He goes down instead of going up.
And there's little changes that I'm pretty sure Rami was singing it.
I mean, Brammy.
I don't know how to say it, but yes.
Yeah, no.
And I can tell too, like he did his research.
He did his homework.
He worked really, you could tell this guy really worked extremely hard to.
Emboddy.
Yeah, embody the role.
But I got to get this right.
Because I'm sure there are so many Freddie Mercury and Queen fans.
Like, I don't want to disappoint.
and also just as myself as an artist
I want to do this justice
and my God did he ever
once we finish up the review portion
I'm going to quickly look up
if he did win the Academy Award I know he was
nominated if he wasn't at his beyond a travesty
but I'm pretty sure he was
but I mean I am curious if he won because this
is an amazing amazing
performance like holy crap amazing
but how do you feel? Well feel
free to look it up while I'm chatting
if you want but I
feel really good there's all
Obviously, so much that I did not remember.
But what I really like about this film and the direction is that even from the top, we don't, unless
you know the full story that Freddie Mercury is gay and he ends up having AIDS, this movie does
a good job of, they don't tell you that up front.
And even if you knew that as an audience member, they're still not, they're not making
that the highlight of this film, right?
But what they do give us is little clues in the beginning, right?
Especially like in the beginning when he sort of, oh, guy winks at him in the very beginning of that hallway and he sort of looks at him.
But then it's a little confusing when he meets Mary and you're like, he's really looking her up and down, which is wild.
And then there's a few other ones where he looks at the trucker.
We don't know what happens.
But then once he meets the bad guy, the Downton Abbey guy, Paul.
um what they give us there in in order to show us his downward spiral um we didn't need exposition
from really any of the other characters to say are you high you're drunk again you're doing too
many drugs yeah they kind of said that towards the end we didn't need it because if you remember
there was a montage shot um of him going into the club it was obviously a gay club
and then he's sort of like going up the stairs and it's red light which always is sort of
a yeah romance but also like nitty gritty sort of makes it feel like wrong in a way
even though it's not but that like they did a good job in lighting that um and that brought us
more into that world like and all and what they also did very subtly is all you just see him doing
is just slightly drinking more.
They're not giving us a full picture yet
of him being a full-blown alcoholic
unless you are really paying attention to
now that he always has a beer in hand.
Right? Now he always has a glass in hand.
No one has said yet you're drinking too much.
You're an alcoholic.
We don't get to that really tilt towards the end
when the band goes, are you high again?
And then we're like, yeah.
But we never see him actually do any line of cocaine
in this film. Any line.
All we get is when Mary,
Mary shows up, which is such a beautiful scene.
Agreed.
That is such an emotional scene when she shows up.
And she's really just trying to look out for him.
And honestly, none of this at the end would have happened if this is a true story without Mary.
Agreed.
Because no one else was showing up at his doorstep.
She's the one that brought up Live Aid.
and then he knew to put the pieces together to get rid of Paul.
So the fact I just really love that him and her were lifelong friends after this.
Like what a beautiful story.
And she got them there to the end.
And them making up as Queen the band, right, also from Mary.
And when he goes off with the other band members, I think what he's saying.
I mean, you brought up a good point with a pushback.
But I also think what he's saying with the other band members
when they don't push back
because the specific guys, I forget the queen guy's names,
but when they push back, their talents more come into play,
and that's what makes Queen Queen.
Obviously, he could go off and make a great album.
We have seen them from the top.
He's some guy.
They're like, get out of here with your teeth.
He sings the line and they're like, yeah, let's freaking go, right?
So he is the big seller of queen.
These guys can't really make it without him, but then we see the reverse.
He can't make it without them either.
And it's not just because he is running the show.
They all wrote stuff.
They all came together.
They all had ideas.
And that's what made them a family.
Yeah, no, it's a good point.
Like, just when I forgot which band member was,
but when he came up with the We Will Rock you,
I didn't even know at first what to make.
I was like, just because Joe Mazzella's character was like, yeah, yeah.
Like, he was being sarcastic, like, to what you're doing.
And then it took me a second to process, like, oh, yeah.
And then I liked, like, I love the creative and intuitiveness of, like, seeing them all come up with these different ways of how they came up with the songs.
And then he had the riff, you know, the another one bites the, like, they all had different ways of coming up with songs.
It wasn't just Freddie.
And that's a good point that you make, you know, but, you know, why they all were so unique in their talent.
and it wasn't just the Freddie show.
It was queen.
Right.
It wasn't, you know, they weren't called Freddie Mercury.
And at the top of the film, you know, he's meeting his family, unbeknownst to us, right, in the back of that van.
But he at that point doesn't know he's gay and he's not sick.
At the end, they do know he's gay and he is very sick and they still remain his family, which, duh, as you should.
But we know there's horror stories out there.
So I really like that we sort of.
started on what his family were seeing the family and we end on family for sure and also too
i think you made a great point about mary uh in terms of like no one else was checking and i mean
they were calling him and like paul was just uh not delivering the message and she's the only one
that came i think that's an interesting thing too in life you got to be so careful who you let in
your life and there was a contrast there because mary is the right person like that type of human
being is the right person to have in your life where Paul is the exact opposite person you want
to have in your life. So I'm glad he saw light at the end of the tunnel. And like she came in
and like Paul like obviously he came in at very vulnerable moments. He also knew when to weasel people
out like he gave that guy that contract into, you know, saying we can make more money with this. And also
he knew that, um, that Freddie was in a very vulnerable place because he was sad about Mary with
David and all that. So, you know, he knew that that would be a very many.
Yeah, it's very emotionally manipulative for sure.
So, but yeah, again, I was very appreciative of their relationship, him and Mary.
So, yeah.
And they also did a really good job.
I forgot to mention this of highlighting Freddie Mercury's humanity.
He was a very nice guy.
When he apologizes, he freaking means it.
I never felt like it was, it was disingenuous.
And we really see it with the very first scene with Jim Hutton.
the way he apologized he's like
I am so sorry and then he's like
can I get you a beer could you just tell me
where it is he legitimately
feels really bad
but what they're doing in the beginning
and with him and Paul
is that they're painting him like he's falling
off this cliff to where he can never get
back to him and who he
is he doesn't really
lose that and we see
that in that scene with
Jim Hutton that he's not
losing like his humanity or his heart
He is still a good person.
It's just he has bad people around him.
Yeah, and we see that.
All right, Regignation, quick personal update.

Thank you, Huell, for sponsoring this video.
Yeah, and also, too, like, Jim is a good guy, too, because he doesn't, like,
Freddy's a very famous musician, and he easily can, like, sleep with him and take advantage of him in this drunken state.
But he's also sober, and he's like, no.
And that's also how Freddie knows he's a good one, even though it took him a long time to find him in the phone book or whatnot.
But I think that speaks a lot to Jim's character and why they ended up until, obviously, the end of Freddy's life.
And that's why Freddy's like, I gotta track this guy down
Because so many people would have taken advantage of me in this situation
So that's why I like I really like again
That speaks to the humanity of Jim as well
And that's why they were perfect for each other
Agree because it's such a good line when he says
And find me when you love yourself
So that was such a good line
What did you find out?
So he did win the Academy Award for Best Actor
All right, let's go
So yes I was glad to see that
What do you think the budge
of this film was oh god it's probably a lot um i don't know sometimes i don't guess he's right i'm
just going to say 120 million is 300 million it was between 50 and 55 million god see i'm always
off but it's fun to guess right um what do you think worldwide box office i think they probably
they had to have doubled it i'm going to guess one 15 million 900 million dollars
No, 903 million actually.
Breaking hell yeah.
I know.
This movie made a ton of money.
216 domestic, 687 internationally.
That's right.
Yeah.
Let us go.
Nice job.
All right, critics.
What do you think Rotten Tomatoes?
Let's just start with critics and then you can do it.
Oh, I think critics probably like it.
I would hope that they're giving it like an 89.
I would assume audience is higher than that.
Let's just keep it at critics.
Okay.
60.
Yeah, I don't agree with that.
God, get out.
Like, literally, I never think the critics are right.
I think, whatever, they're old and they don't get it or something.
What about audience?
I think audience is probably like 91.
85.
Okay, that's fine with me.
Up there, we got to have it up there.
Yeah.
Okay, so let's do a little trivia really quick, and then we'll call it a day.
So, oh, okay, for some reason was that the spoilers, or I was like, all right?
Queen's set at Live Aid is widely regarded as one of the best live performances in rock and roll history.
Wow.
In a 2005 channel 4 poll of over 60 artists, journalists and music industry executives,
Queens Live Aid Performance in 1985 was named the world's greatest ever live performance.
Wow!
Amazing.
That's insane.
And the way they captured it in the film was it felt like we were watching the real thing.
I'll have to see on YouTube.
I'm sure someone recorded it or something,
but I will have to check out the real thing.
Yeah.
British choreographer and movement coach,
Pauly Bennett, worked painstakingly with Rami Malick
to perfect every nuance of Freddie Mercury's mannerisms,
every eye glance, every body turn,
every cocky strut on stage,
and every flick of the microphone had to be just right.
Yes.
Good job.
Because it was.
Good job, darlings.
Yeah.
You guys got it.
So good.
Canadian singer Mark Martel lends his voice to the biopic as Freddie.
They use a mix of his voice and Freddie Mercury's together on top of Rami Malix.
Oh, on top of Rami.
In an interview, Malik said his singing was seamlessly mixed with both Freddy's and Martels.
Wow.
So there's like three people on that.
Interesting.
I like that.
Freddie Mercury's vocal range stretched to three octaves, though it was rumored that it spanned
In 2016, a group of biophysicists and medical researchers concluded that his vocal cords moved faster than an average singer's.
His vibrato measured in at 7.04 hearst, while standard vibrato frequency falls between 5.4 and 6.9 hertz.
Yeah.
That makes sense.
Awesome.
That's why he's so freaking good.
Yeah.
The note, Freddie Mercury sustains for almost six seconds during the call and response performance with the crowd at live.
Dave came to be known as
the no turd around the world.
That's right. Awesome.
I'll do one more and then we'll do
two more and then we'll do spoilers.
For his role as Freddie Mercury,
Rami Malick was fitted with special prosthetic teeth
to recreate Freddy's prominent overbite.
After filming wrapped,
Rami kept the teeth as a memento
from the shoot eventually having them cast
in gold. Awesome.
So cool.
That's awesome.
Wow.
Good idea.
On the late show with Steve,
in Kobe episode Mike Myers
Christiana or
Christian Ampore
Mike Myers said that during the making of
Wayne's world he insisted that the song he
and his friends listened to and bang their heads to
while driving would be Bohemian Rhapsody
the producers felt it wouldn't be
appropriate Myers stood his ground
eventually threatening to quit
the film Myers got his
way the movie became a huge hit
and the song reentered the charts
peaking at number two in the United States
the movie was credited for introducing
Queen to a new audience, including this guy.
Myers also said that when he was offered a chance to appear in the movie,
accepted immediately without bothering to read the script.
Ironically, his character, Ray Foster, is convinced no one will listen to and bang
around their heads to Bohemian Rhapsody driving around the car.
I called that out what was happening.
That's in Wayne's World?
That's in Wayne's World.
And then was he a producer of that movie?
Freddie?
No.
The guy were talking.
Right.
Yeah, Mike Myers.
I believe he was obviously the star of the movie, but I think he produced it.
Okay, because I'm like, dang, he put his foot down, they agreed.
You have to have money there for that.
That's awesome trivia.
Yeah, just.
Let's go to maybe some spoilers.
No, he was not a producer on the movie.
So he was just an actor.
He was just the star.
Wow.
Just really quick and then spoilers because this one was interesting because we talked about
Queen guitarist, Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor performed the rock arrangement
for the film's opening of the 20th century Fox fanfare.
Oh, yeah, it was so good.
Yeah, we were talking about that.
I love that.
do two spoilers.
Okay.
If I can get to it, God, there's so much trivia.
I'm sure there's a lot of trivia for this.
Oh, my God, Tara.
Oh, my God.
You got to swipe faster, kid.
All right.
Elton John and Freddie Mercury were very good friends in real life, but John admits
he was seething after seeing Queen's live aid set go down so well with the audience
and on TV.
Apparently, he stormed up to Mercury after the band came off and only half-jokingly said,
and I quote, you absolute bastard, you totally.
stole it. Nobody will be able to beat that, much to Mercury's pleasure. I was going to say,
good luck going after that, after Queen on that one. Last one, at one point, Freddie mocks the rest of
the band saying that without him, they'd all be in mundane jobs, particularly he claims that
former astrophysicist student, Brian, would be Dr. Brian May having written a paper that no one
would read. In reality, Brian May received a PhD in astrophysicist from Imperial College London in 2007
in the same scene, DC tells Freddie seemingly for the first time that he studied electrical engineering.
In reality, John Deacon created the DC amp, the queen used throughout their career.
Oh, my God.
That's very cool.
He created the amp, dude.
That's amazing.
That's freaking wild.
That is amazing.
We love this movie, obviously, so much.
I give it 10 out of 10.
Those critics are idiots.
Yeah, it's pretty, pretty amazing.
I love, love, love, love, love it.
You love it?
You got any last thoughts for the people?
No, just good stuff.
Let us know if there's other biopics, other musicals that we can check out.
But this was, this was, I would go with you.
10-9-10.
I really enjoyed it.
Rami Malik, amazing, amazing performance.
Great film.
Good freaking job.
Oscar well-deserved.
Thank you guys for sticking with this.
Please leave a like, leave a comment.
Tell us your thoughts about this.
