Possibly
Is that true? Am I lying
I got to check.
We have had beings at various points in time.
They're always coming and going.
Always coming and going, like Medea and the ghost in this movie.
Now, without further ado, let's get into the review.
I think last time we filmed, I started with Jonatello.
So this time I'm going to start with my boy, my Johnny boy.
Yes.
How are you thinking about, boo?
I'm a media Halloween.
Well, it wasn't Medea.
It was a D-Saw.
But, I mean.
Not to the degree we thought it would.
what to say about this movie
I mean
I had fun
this is this is okay so during this movie
I started to realize there are sort of
becoming tears of Tyler Perry
for me there are Tyler Perry movies that I think
surprise me you know every you have the early period
where you're watching him find his voice and then
you know after a while he starts to
kind of even out or at least gets a greater grip on
the technical as well as
depending on the movie you're watching
the structural scripting elements
and the thematic elements and whatnot.
There are a handful of them
that are kind of
just like, this is like a hangout
movie.
Like a lot of Tyler Perry movies fall
or overlap with the category of
hangout movie.
And this movie
is fascinating
to me because it did
stuff I would expect a media movie
to do.
Sure.
It flirted with some things I wish a Medea movie would do.
It ultimately was not, I'm not holding this very heavily against the movie.
I guess for my personal taste, I wish we could get a Medea movie that is willing to play a little faster and more loose with, you know, the fantasy of it all or something.
Well, John, I'll have you know that there is a boo too.
a second Medea movie
this Halloween.
So we still could get our chance
of an actual horror Medea movie.
I hope that we get an actual horror
Medea movie.
I mean, the thing is,
there were some moments
as a big horror fan myself.
I am always rooting for a movie like this
to go into its horror bag
just as much as its comedic bag.
I'm not asking this to become a full horror movie.
I like a good horror comedy.
I would say that this is mostly
just, yeah, kind of a hangout.
comedy with a bit of a it's so hard to talk about because it's like this movie has more of a focus
than some of them do but it's still got a kind of broad all over the placeness about it yeah this feels
like a couple versions of what this movie could have been and part of me was really rooting for
this to become some sort of anthology i almost wish that the boo movies could be like the treehouse
of horror is to the simpsons where it's like they exist outside of the continuity so you can
do stuff with your ensemble that you couldn't normal
do. And so part of me was sitting here wishing that like you got Brian's house. That's a location.
You got the frat house. That's also kind of a location into itself. And you've got just the
surrounding area, which, you know, in a place like Atlanta, a place like Georgia, you know, you've got
a lot of spooky, you know, locations you could probably historic and or rural locations you could
go to. They had their like horror lighting on point. There was some good stuff with like, you know,
the fog rolling in and everything. Yeah. But it is a very, like this, I guess the,
best thing I could say about this movie is that it does feel Halloween in the sense that this
does kind of feel like a madcap night with a bunch of friends you've been hanging out with.
Sure. True.
You know, again, it's not my favorite of the Medea movies as, again, a person who is very much
rooting for this scenario to work.
Yeah.
It didn't quite embrace the opportunity as much as it could have.
but that said it did you know commit to being a you know a fun light spooky Halloween movie
sure and so I wouldn't be upset to have this on during Halloween season as part of the rotation
the broad rotate this little maybe an earlier in the season for the horror uh candy bowl rotation
I would love to see a boo Medea story at the Humphrey house for sure it would be great I love that
come on in Medea smack me around or something
or, you know, just
ramble at me for a while.
I would love it.
But, you know, fun.
The supporting cast really ranged.
I don't know if we ever discovered who, who was.
Some of these folks on screen,
I wouldn't be surprised if they were like an influencer or a social media person
coming in to play a character,
especially the guy who was whatever, Joseph.
Yeah, he's flusy, flusy, too.
Oh, Jonathan?
Yeah, yeah, Jonathan.
I thought he was Keemster, but now that was a different guy.
Which, you know, like acting.
appropriately for the movie
but very like silly sketch over the top
a little less feature motion picture
produced with Hollywood money
but you know everybody showed up to have fun
you know we learned some stuff we stood up
Brian I like that they focused in a little bit on
Brian
the pause of that
so many things just happened I like the idea that they would do that
I mean you know we get a bit of a Tyler
family drama amid all this stuff and then a very elaborate prank versus prank scenario which is also
another sort of classic movie trope so it's a bit of a mess but it's a more fun mess than some of
them maybe not as tight or as cohesive a mess as some of the other ones uh yeah this is all right
there you go okay and jonat tissue guys i want you to look at these walls like this is studio a
and this picture is of studio b you know what's been hanging on these walls
Displates that we bought with our own money.
No sponsorship.
Why am I specifying that?
Because today, we actually have a Displate sponsorship.
Even Coyendra's solo channel has a whole wall of these things.
And here's why we love them.
I have bought so many movie posters, fought with frames,
and eventually just started taped into the wall or pinning them like an idiot.
And Displates, their premium metal posters.
They look fantastic and they come with a magnetic mounting system.
No drilling, no fighting with frames.
And swapping designs is ridiculously easy.
And since it's Halloween,
We have picked out some of these, like Friday the 13th, we've got Castlevania, we've got Alien, we've got even Ampel.
I mean, just come on, look at these.
And their website has a ridiculous selection, officially licensed movies, TV shows, video games, independent artists, seriously, whatever you're into, go explore.
And for October, you can use R code rejects and get 22% off one display, 27% off 2, and 33% off 3 or more.
That's a third off.
If you're looking, go out.
You can head to Displate.com at Real Rejects or click our link below.
Use code Rejects and get yourself something awesome for your wall.
Seriously, Displate, thank you.
We love these things long before you sponsored us and we're thrilled to be working with you.
Clearly, this is a, this is a worship relationship.
How are you feeling, man?
How did they do the mirror thing?
They hacked into the mirror.
I'm still.
They hacked the mirror.
They have the mirror.
They have the mirror.
They have, gosh.
Of course, apparently.
Tyler Perry.
No, I actually enjoyed this one and the last one.
Like, I think this has met my expectations because I don't have very high expectations for Tyler Perry movies.
I know this is kind of, I'm sorry to be like very straight.
You.
Jesus.
But like, this was goofy and silly and fun.
And like I was riding that wave.
Yeah.
Until it hits the very, like the family coming.
and I'm like, okay, I can expect this from Tyler Perry.
But I think you said this earlier, right?
Tyler Perry doesn't, doesn't have kids.
He's not married, nor does he have children.
So, like, where is that coming from?
I don't know.
He's been married and had children on screen for years.
It's the same.
Vicariously.
He's been blending and he's, like, losing himself in the role.
I don't know.
Yeah, like, honestly, like, when that hits, I'm like,
if because the acting is not like, Shakespearean and so great,
they kind of especially with the
Tiffany character like it's not
selling it kind of just looks like
not great acting but no
I mean again not to be so hard
on it honestly it's a fun
Halloween movie
characters like you know
Bam and Hattie
doing their thing feels like a
elongated sketch so
it's fun and silly
in such an appropriate way
being a Halloween movie
again not
coming into it with not very high expectation
and like we kind of
somewhat can be it can be
predictable but not in like
a terrible way again because
I didn't have extreme expectations
so yeah
the only thing I bump into is like
the mirror thing and not
like we never got the explanation but
do we have to and then secondly
they explained it they hacked into
the plumbing they hacked into the plumbing
which in turn affected
the mirror somehow
they rigged the mirror
They rigged it with some electrical...
Of course.
They put some specific wires
behind the mirror pane
that would heat up in that exact
script so that when the mirror fogged over
they would, yeah, or they would cool it down.
I don't know, whatever gets you that effect
is what they did.
That's just mirror science.
Yeah, that's how that works.
No, I...
I had fun with this one.
It's so weird because I'm doing
I'm doing a lot of the reactions with Jackie
Halloween and this is the first one I'm dressing up for
That's a Halloween like I guess
Well this is different
These is different
Those were Halloween all day every day
This is Halloween for Halloween's sake
Yeah absolutely absolutely
But yeah how about you Aaron
How did you feel about everything
This was an interesting one
Okay here we go
No no no no I actually had fun with this one
I will say I had a lot of fun with this one.
Was there a lot of ramblings going on?
Of course.
Is there a lot of commentary about things we've seen in other Tyler period movies with the exact same messaging?
Of course.
Yeah.
But I will say I didn't.
After coming off of a comedy, comedy loosely with a movie like Medea's Big Happy family,
I'm happy to say that I did have some laughs within this movie.
So for that alone, this crosses the bar onto the, I wouldn't say it's top tier Tyler Perry, but it's like, it's like middle of the road, Tyler Perry.
It's not bottom of the barrel, but it's like, it's just like, all right.
This is, this is fun.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, I would agree.
The stuff that I thought was interesting from a commentary's point of view was the amount of time we spent on the how we discipline our kids thing.
Yeah, exactly.
Yeah, because the conversation went on for a while and went and certain.
And then just this knowledge of Tyler Perry's own upbringing with, you know, his father being like a hardworking disciplined man, but also being a very staunch disciplinarian with, I think, bordering on abuse.
It's interesting the line in which Tyler Perry's kind of found himself in with this perception of how children should be handled, especially for someone who doesn't have kids themselves.
but also just the idea of physical action, physical violence is something that's very common
within a black household, black community.
It's something that, you know, my cousins grew up getting wept in just like different
sort of scenarios for punishment.
And just the idea of I need to physically put hands on you.
I need to put a belt to ass because you have done something wrong stems back from slavery.
So it's just like, oh, the fact that we're just like still.
And it's something that granted a lot of older black people kind of stand by and especially in the South.
So it was funny in an interesting way to see someone who's progressive like a Brian character.
But I don't know if it's specifically him who's progressive that.
They're just like, oh, you a bitch.
And like, oh, you just like, nobody respects you.
I was just like, is that what they're trying to say about progressive people as a whole when it comes to discipline their kids?
Or is that specifically Brian?
They're like, oh, you're soft and you get walked over because you don't have, you don't have a backbone because you don't discipline your kids.
And I was like, what is Tyler Perry trying to say within this scenario?
I think that part I found to be interesting slash perplexing.
I would love to, I don't know, just like understand that a little bit more.
Sure.
But some of the other stuff was just a little ridiculous, just over the time.
top in a way that didn't make sense.
Like the mirror thing.
Like the fact that they get.
You talk about it.
They're slayed it.
The things that fried me the most were one, the fact that I wonder if Tyler Perry
believes that Liza Koshy is black because she looks black, but she's very much not black.
So it's very funny.
Indian people are the black people of Asia.
Sure.
You know.
My God.
And I stayed by that.
statement.
He's 100% serious.
Oh my gosh.
That's right.
I'm being serious.
This is a fact.
But also it's a comedy and things are obviously hiding over the top.
Absolutely.
But especially in Tyler Perryverse where the police just allow you to just like talk shit to the kids outside of the frat house and then immediately sent them to the prison bus and then everybody just believes it.
It was just so ridiculous.
I couldn't help but just find it hilarious and funny.
No, exactly.
That's exactly what.
I guess that is the, yeah, it's like there's a peripheral ridiculousness that this movie has that's kind of unique because so many disparate things have to go specifically for this whole movie to look like it does.
Right.
So, yeah, you get to the end and they're like, okay, I get it.
They're pranking them.
These aren't even the real cops.
And they're like, no, these are the real cops.
And I was like, wait, I mean, why are the real cops agree to half this shit?
Yeah, the other cop speaking every language and the, yeah.
Yeah, the fake Chinese.
Love it.
Yeah.
Love to see.
What's the note there?
The fact of the subtitles is just like, call that out was so funny to me.
Yeah, definitely.
Brian feels like a different character in this movie.
Yes.
Brian is whoever which movie needs him to be.
Yeah.
You guys have to see more Tyler Perry movies in like a more short, short span of time.
You and Greg Ragg to them like over a year ago.
Would you say that outside of this movie, he's a different in every movie as far as like how they characterize him?
I would say, oh, go.
Going up, please. After you.
Go ahead.
I think there are a handful of Brian's that we've witnessed so far.
Sure.
I think every once in a way, like, when we first met Brian in the first movie, I remember thinking
to myself like, oh, he's one of the more grounded characters with one of the more nuanced
things to do.
And actually, his performance in that movie, I think, was like kind of tempered and nice.
And then the next time I saw Brian, I was like, whoa, what happened here?
Or at least, like, the way his performance was out of it.
of makeup and out of all that's like suddenly felt a little odd and then yeah i don't have like
the every specific off the dome but i feel like we have witnessed competent brian we have witnessed
like woefully barely keeping it together brian like yeah but he seems to be whatever they need him
to be for this movie's purposes right and sometimes that includes being a very competent federal
lawyer or whatever yeah yeah because in the last one we watched as a time we're recording this which
was witness protection witty p he was very
much like good at his job very caring very warm and then this one he was like the guy who couldn't
like catch a break he thought it'd be disrespectful right and just the way that he was talking and and
bantering something about it felt more medea-esque in his performance yeah which i thought was
interesting this is the most he's felt like a member of their family yes for sure yeah because
i'm like normally i'm like okay there's very distinct brian this very distinct joe and very
distinct Medea but this time I'm like you kind of bling blurring the lines a little bit especially
with Medea going to the deeper register like sounding more like Tyler Pear and more like Brian I'm
like okay we're kind of blurring the lines and in some capacity here choice too because they committed
to that in this movie I feel like they have done it there maybe it was witness protection I feel like
there have been prior movies where there'll be like a line or like a moment and it's just one and then
you say to yourself I wonder if that was like a break on set but
then they decided it would be more fun to keep it in the movie.
Like, you know, we've seen in the bluepirs,
he'll go out of Medea voice real quick and jump back in.
Whereas here, that was like a note that they were playing from time to time.
Legitimately, yeah.
And it's funny.
This is the most I've ever been like, wait a minute.
Is Joe, he's always making fun of her for being huge and also like calling her a man.
Right.
Is, are we about to like legitimize this further?
Right.
Are we just like having fun and goofing off?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Like the joke continues where it's not a joke anymore.
Like, yeah.
There are moments where she does it and just like, I can't tell if I'm supposed to be absorbing more layers to this thing than not.
No, definitely.
And I agree with like with Brian the first two Tyler Perry movies, which is what Diary of Mad, Black Woman and then the other, what's the other one?
I can't remember for it wasn't, was it my family or jail?
Maybe family union.
Those two Brian's, again, survey, like what John said was.
There's a purpose of him being very grounded and kind of just level-headed.
And then, like, witness protection, that's the same kind of Brian.
We got those.
But this one, because it's a comedy and leaning towards just comedy, it serves that purpose
of adapting to his comedic chops.
But again, like, in the context of we're seeing, especially with witness protection,
it's very in his job, right?
Yeah.
This one is just the domestic kind of father figure that he's not dealing with anything
in literally his practice.
practice, he's, okay, we get the Brian at home.
There's nothing at the, like, none of the Simmons rambling applies to his job.
Right.
Yeah, exactly.
And now finally we get to see him do it at home.
Right.
Exactly.
Exactly.
So yeah, I feel as if Brian, like this one has been the most revealing of Brian.
Yes.
Just because now I'm trying to remember the continuity of the stories because, like, we got
the mom who was what, like, you know, recovering.
movie yeah she was like struggling with addiction and he was like trying to love her and she was trying
to do better but yeah that was a new one the most nuanced storyline in that movie yes definitely
as i recall it yeah and uh i don't i don't know what the continuity is now i'm like does she clean
her act up and then they and then started walking all over yeah and they divorced or did he get married
again sure at some point that i don't recall off the top of my head and it's it's so interesting
watching movies from what 2005-2006 when he made those to a movie like 2016 and just how
his filmmaking has changed over those years and the way he's able to he is someone who can play
with multiple tones and the different variety of the type of writing even though the subject
matters or the themes are similar if not damn they're identical to other ones yeah so i'll
give him that you know he can he can have variety in the type of tone
that he sort of lives in.
But yeah, let's, I don't know, man.
Let's see what the next one has to offer.
Let's go full horror next time.
Like, I do agree.
He does multiple tones, and he's demonstrated that even amid the proprietary mess of all that,
he can nail some of those tones.
And I would love to see him nail like a legit horror.
Or a more synthesized horror comedy that is mostly comedy.
Like, they let you know.
They don't let you like, I was like, you could lend
a little bit more suspense to the sequence
where they're messing with them in the house before you
make it very obvious that they're being pranked on
or something. Let's see if we
have any Medea questions today.
Let's see if we have any boo questions.
Yeah, yeah.
Oh, there it is. He passed it. There it is. Survey says.
No questions.
People don't give a shit.
She won't give a damn about Medea.
About what we think about Medea.
Even Jay Rushden isn't here.
Oh, my gosh.
Wow, Jay.
Wow, Jay.
Jay can't even
can't sit through Medea.
Jay Rushden is our blackest patron.
He is not here.
I don't know actually if he is or not.
Yeah, all there's a comment,
a single comment.
Julian says,
hope they do the sequel as well.
So do I,
all right.
I would love to watch.
I want a boo every few years.
I want them to be treehouse of horror.
I want my Tyler Perry saw.
Yeah.
Give us Medi saw, please.
Medesaw.
This could have been really,
I think, like, it would work.
Not that I didn't like
some of the stuff they did here.
I think it would be really cool, though, if they did an anthology,
even connected, like, trick-or-treat style where it's, like, kind of the same night,
kind of the same universe, but, like, have, like, oh, here's a spooky story about Joe.
Here's a spooky story with Medea.
Here's a spooky story with Brian.
That's one with Bam, you know.
I agree.
And kind of let them all overlap.
Like, for a second, I thought that might happen, but then it did.
I guess they didn't do it.
Oh, today.
What you ain't going to do?
It was fun.
That was fun.
Okay, guys, let us know your favorite moment from the Boo franchise.
Not the Boo franchise.
The Moot franchise.
The Booth franchise now.
There's two of them at the very least.
This movie, and it played in theaters too.
It did.
I remember when this came out.
Yeah, I remember.
2016, my God.
And Boo, hold on, you passed it.
Wouldn't a boot two come out?
It does not say.
But she has machetes in that one.
Yeah.
That's cool.
That comes in.
There's no relevance to that.
I'll come with the very next year.
Okay.
Wow.
That's a true horror movie fashion.
That's how we do around here.
This was shot in six days.
What?
What the hell?
Whoa.
The idea was conceived after watching the film top five.
In that film, Chris Rock's character enters the movie theater and sees movie goers lined up for a fictional Tyler Perry movie about Medea fighting ghosts and haunted house.
The movie was also called Boo.
Interesting.
Do a ghost movie.
Interesting.
So, wow.
He actually made the movie.
Yeah.
Yeah.
In the scene where BJ walks through the living and the actor is holding the iPad of the film script supervisor, which happened to have a BDF to the script on screen is the prop.
It was improvised as cameras started rolling
in on the scene. Interesting.
Yeah.
The character, Tiffany was played by different actress.
Yeah, from The Diary of Mad Black Woman.
Sadly couldn't get her back.
Yeah, we'd like that continuity.
Yeah.
For Lagochi,
known by her fans as Little Brown girls.
So this is his big influencer movie.
Yeah, clearly.
It looks like it.
Oh, man.
And this is Patrice Lovelie's film debut as Hattie,
so I guess we didn't...
I guess we didn't miss anything.
I like that these movies
will just be like, we got a new friend here
and they're our friend and they've always been our friend
and you're just going to be used to that now.
Yeah, exactly.
You're just going to get...
Don't act like it didn't happen.
Dude, they got a hell of YouTube people in this movie.
Hell of YouTube.
All the frat people are YouTube people.
Yep. Wow, Bradley Martin.
Jimmy Tatro, who drew all the dicks.
He did.
Yes, he did.
And he's Gorilla Grod now.
Yeah, he's a gorilla grot.
Wow.
Do you guys have any final thoughts
before we get out of here?
More Tyler Perry Horror.
more Medea saw let's get it going
Medesaw it's been 10 years let's get
another one come on
Boo three let's do it
Hopefully
Boo three are you guys
We'll see you guys the next one
Boo stay spooky stay scary
Dress up
And yeah go eat some grits
I'll see you later
Happy Halloween
Halloween
