Starting point is 00:00:00 This is the Reject Nation. Welcome back to Carrie the TV show. We're here to talk about episode four, five, and six. And unfortunately, Margaret put Tara in a closet. Tara fell ill and she was like, I'm going to make it in. And we were like, no, Tara, they're all going to laugh at you. Yeah. If you come to work and shoot episodes of Carrie with her.
Starting point is 00:00:24 Yeah, that's true. She is under the weather. We don't know if and when she will be here. But we know that John and I are here. We are here. Ron Joxy. is in the house. Trippy moist.
Starting point is 00:00:33 And Tara sends her love. She really does. And she's bummed to miss us because so far, so good. Yeah. The show has been very good. I'm really excited to see what happens from here. And I think that means that we should just jump right into it. Let's jump right in.
Starting point is 00:00:47 Here we go. Oh. Hiromi Kamata. Damn, dude. That was episode four, five, and six of Carrie. and we're about to talk about it. But before we do that, I do want to say, thank you guys for being with us along for this journey.
Starting point is 00:01:09 What a crazy one it has been so far. And if you are here at this point, then I'm hoping that means that you guys want to like, comment, subscribe. Be Tara, be Tara right now. Ring the bell. That's for you, our girl. We hope you're feeling better at all.
Starting point is 00:01:25 Love you, Tara. We're a Tara Trooper. We are Tara Troopers. Also, big shout to our patrons, Patreon.com slash the real rejects. It's where you can sing up with your own copy. That's where Greg and John cover stuff exclusively. That's where you get cool perks like discounts on our merch,
Starting point is 00:01:40 RejectNation Shop.com. Hey. I'm in this cool Colt O'Shegeek shirt. I got the Crunchberry Reject. Oh, yeah, you love to see it. And also usually that means that you guys can ask us questions on things. So be on the lookout for that for other things. Not for this TV show because we are moving and grooving fast.
Starting point is 00:01:58 We are running up that hill, see? that home. Yeah, we're doing, we're doing the thing. Yeah, what's your best? If I can make my nose bleed, I would. That's the problem is like, you can make your own nose blade? Yeah, because then it would be the full 11. Yeah, but maybe do the carry and make somebody else's nosebleed. That's probably better, honestly. I don't want my own nose to bleed. Never ever heard somebody want their own nose to bleed.
Starting point is 00:02:21 If I would, if I would only make it bleed one droplet so that you achieve coolness effect. It's like the, it's the Denzel Washington single tier. Exactly. 100% but for your relapse yeah for telekinetics totally makes sense uh we are going to be back for another video to cover the penultimate and the finale so don't forget to join us for that but before we watch those before we binge our hearts out john how did you feel wow so much has happened try to tell me how you felt about four five and six this middle chunk yeah i'm still very i mean there's a lot of great work going into this. I'm still very intrigued by this take and now that we're this far through, you know, I'm much more aware of what take they're going for. And we're also watching this at a moment in time where Mike Flanagan has said he wants this to go for three seasons, which is interesting to me. Oh, did he say that? I saw a headline. I don't know what the context surrounding that is.
Starting point is 00:03:19 I've tried to avoid every single thing about this show. Yeah, same. So I caught that in stray. Don't know what that means because most of what we've seen here doesn't really support that. But yeah, that aside. Well, I guess it does with Carrie as a character, because we see her walk out of what prom, presumably, whatever it is. And then we see this documentary that they're making that we still haven't touched on that I feel like is either Kate Siegel because we keep hearing her voice. So maybe she's interviewing them or potentially Katie Sackoff,
Starting point is 00:03:48 who I only reference because I know she was doing press for the show and we haven't seen her in the show yet. So anyway, I can continue. But I guess that might be the three-season possibility. Yeah, I don't know if that, because they keep dropping and they didn't do it as much in this block, which is why I kind of went in that direction with it. Because, yeah, in the first few episodes, you get to like,
Starting point is 00:04:09 oh, yeah, what is this like Xavier School thing with this lady in the chair? The back of her head. And I'm like, that stuff, yeah, I get, like, not that I see what the plan is from this, but I'm like, I get, that's probably what the multiple seasons thing is. But anyway, like, seeing how they've expanded this for a season of TV beyond what I know about the book, like all the stuff about, you know, using social media, Margaret White. having her own Instagram account where she's like, you know, kind of fighting back. Yeah, Margaret Redd.
Starting point is 00:04:35 It's interesting. Like, it's interesting. And I'm chewing on it. And it's one of those things where I'm, like, very aware now that, like, some people will probably really not like what they're doing with this. Definitely. And some people really will. I, and just... Are you in the middle?
Starting point is 00:04:50 I mean, I have... I've heard things over the years about, like, what the core elements of the book are. And I think the hardest one to square is the idea that carry in the books... as I'm told and shouts out Sabrina Ramirez for kind of also filling in some of these gaps for me recently. But yeah, she's not as like approachable in the book. And she is very much, as I'm told, like much more down her mom's rabbit hole of brimstone in terms of like, you know, the corruption of the outside world. She's much more like down for that cause or is much more brainwashed into those feelings. So instead of being this very open-minded, welcoming presence, she is a bit off-putting, which is part of the,
Starting point is 00:05:29 The horror of the book Is that like... You're putting it on the floor? You tried to hide it from... Because when we hit the table, it brings up the timer. But yeah, I wanted you to be as far away from control as possible. But yeah, like I... I understand in the book, yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:45 She's not made... The thing that people always bring up is she's not made to be like a conventionally attractive or like conventionally attractive adjacent character. And also like she is a bit strange or a bit, you know, socially averse to the people around her so it's a little less easy to see the morality of certain things in the book I guess or it's easier to put yourself in the shoes
Starting point is 00:06:07 of like would I be welcoming to this person but taking this for what it is I think this is a really interesting place to put all of these themes because yeah what does Carrie about you know at least in large part you know the sort of social safari
Starting point is 00:06:23 of high school and you know the the cruelty that people have between each other and this is doing I think at least a decent job of fleshing out, you know, like you said, I'm not used to seeing as much on the teacher side of things in a high school thing. And, you know, it's not the first thing to give us these glimpses. But I do think that, yeah, all of our ensemble characters, you at least have a nuanced look into to see why they are the way they are, why they're, you know, why Chris just can never look at a point of no return and decide to turn back, you know. Yeah. So yeah, I'm very compelled, and I'm still chewing on the idea again that, like, I think it makes sense with how they've drawn, especially Margaret, that she might be sort of drawn to this platform that she is amassed and this new kind of power to espouse her views onto the world.
Starting point is 00:07:20 It's one of those things where, like, that's a big choice. You know, it's like, in some versions, I'd be like, I don't imagine any version of Margaret White ever wanting to even touch the devil machine and go online. but you know i think they they do interesting stuff with her and that there are times when she's right she said like you have to use your opponent's tactics in order to beat them which i felt like was good justification for her using the camera because otherwise i would have thought that that wouldn't have been right yeah it's like i get where i this version as its own take and the way it is chosen to sell these things i'm okay with like i think that yeah like this version of margaret white who we do see more out in the world and
Starting point is 00:07:58 is having to have like a normal job. Like they set it all up in the in the premiere. You know, it's like she has to be part of the normal world. And she is not such a one dimensional character that she's not going to at least like sort of assess what all that is. And yeah, what tools might be available to her being that she and Carrie have to be part of the outside world now. I feel like you are answering my question, but you're also dodging a little bit on purpose. And I'm wondering if this is not working as well for you as a. it is for me, which so for, I'm very compelled.
Starting point is 00:08:32 It makes me feel bad. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, okay. Yeah. I think that's interesting, though, because I do watch a lot of, as I call it, teeny bopper stuff. Like, I watch a lot of coming of age high school drama shows that probably are not as much on your radar, right? Like the 90210 and Gossip Girl and OCs of the world, some of which you've probably seen, some not. even like when the CW did, and I'm not saying this is like a CW show,
Starting point is 00:09:02 but even when CW did all of those like Supergirl Flash era, all of those shows or things. Riverdale. Riverdale, which is another high school one that I loved. Or Summer I turned pretty, like all of the current ones that are all over the place. Outer Banks, like every high school drama, and other than Riverdale, none of those are supernatural. I watch
Starting point is 00:09:27 but so it's kind of this is kind of merging my worlds a little bit in making me think like you mentioned that this might really not work for some people this is so 2026 this is so high school drama coming of age technology tons of screens
Starting point is 00:09:48 how do we deal with our children very Regina George very archetype We've got our main four in the Chris, Tina, Carrie, and Sue dynamic. You know, then, like, hunky boyfriend, jocks. Like, this is very much so cutting a page from mean girls and that high school type of show or movies book in 2026. And it's got to carry spin on it. So, like, I do feel like this is a television show first, carry second.
Starting point is 00:10:24 That's, yeah, that's a good way to. put it. And I love TV. So I'm really intrigued by that, you know, the surprise that we get with Raul Coley's character where I was like, ooh, I didn't see that coming. But we did hear, uh, we did hear Brooklyn on the phone saying, no, I love you, but whatever. And we did see that picture in the hallway. And we did see him be like, uh, rejecting phone calls. And we did hear that he was stood up and we did you know there was like little glimpses but my and john's brain and i'm sure a lot of you guys at home we didn't even let ourselves go there because we're like why would this man be talking to brooklyn yeah she's a child well and because we like raoul
Starting point is 00:11:09 yeah we trust him implicitly which is smart casting exactly and because he was he was he was treating amber mid thunder's character um rita so well and because like the the guidance counselor liked him a lot You know, we have all these things that lead me to believe, oh, I'm not even going to let my brain go there. So while the Emmeline stuff we might have caught on to, the other stuff is like, oh, wow, and this shit does happen in high schools. Yeah. It happened in my high school. It happens in high schools where there is that. So I can't even imagine what 2026, like the entire universe is in your pocket, you know, society works, like at a school like this.
Starting point is 00:11:52 Yes. So unrelated to Carrie, I'm really loving this show and also talking about sometimes parents and teachers are so self-involved that they forget that the main purpose is to raise your kid right. Yeah. And send them out into the world as the best person they can be. Yeah. But that's probably not what a lot of people were hoping for in their Carrie show. Yeah. It's interesting. And I don't begrudge at that. Like, I'm a person who a viewer who welcomes at least. the prospect of it like just just a unique take is not does not a good show make necessarily but yeah like it's it's conscientious like i get it it's like this makes a lot of sense to do this with carrie and it's
Starting point is 00:12:34 not like you could look at the original at least movie version and go this is completely outside of the box of that you know you're still at a high school and all that but um but yeah there's like a greater i don't know it almost feels more like yeah you're in a stephen king universe show and yes It's partly Carrie. And there's just, you know, what else? It's like it's hard to exactly quantify how to feel about that. Because I'm like, it's not a bad thing to do because you need to flesh out an ensemble on a show. Right.
Starting point is 00:13:03 And you need to. I'm loving that. Yeah. But that doesn't mean it's for the masses. And it also doesn't mean it's what I would have thought Mike Flanagan would have done with a Carrie show necessarily. It is, it is like straight. It's weird because it's like I'm appreciating a lot about it. And it's like I feel bad after watching it in the way that it is intending.
Starting point is 00:13:20 you know, intending me too. And I think that, you know, there's a lot of effective acting and a lot of really great style. And I love that they have had, you know, so many women on the scripts and on the direction, like, it looks really good. And there are a lot of, like, you know, Mike Flanagan's joints are known for monologues. And I thought there have been some strong, you know, monologues and some strong ideas. Yeah. And, and I mean, you know, too, I was wondering, because in the direction, especially with the turn on Raul Coley's character. and they plop that into the timeline
Starting point is 00:13:50 and all the other chaos but like when that comes down like they really did a good job of like pushing forward the sour note of like something seems wrong here like being wrongfully accused of this yeah would wreck your life in its own way but like something feels like it's not
Starting point is 00:14:06 like it seems like they want me to actually start to believe that this is something he really did and the anger at the bar even like going back to like thou dost protest too much I mean like the bartender didn't want serve him and he's fewer as opposed to like I feel like if that's if that's rowl and he didn't do it you maybe be embarrassed and be like okay I'm just going to get out of it like not violent and that's
Starting point is 00:14:31 tough and I think at a time we live in like making a choice like that is the choice is a is a you know usually you would see the like oh it's a tragedy he was wrongfully accused and now that I wanted this character to have that development you know come down but it is like that does speak to something in reality of like, yeah, this guy who we all like and we all trusted, you know, and that's, you know, part of the, this is the real horror they're getting at among other things. And I think that's an interesting thing to add to the Chris story is that like, yeah, this account did do one thing in a very rough way that eventually begat a kind of, it's like the whole thing still fucked up, but there's one less predator in the mix. So I guess
Starting point is 00:15:17 in some way that's like a byproduct that's okay but the whole thing is still so... But he didn't go to jail. Yeah, yeah and there's no retribution for that nobody gets their pound of flesh so to speak. Not that you really ever could level that what's been taken there. But like I don't know that we would say justice
Starting point is 00:15:32 is served in that scenario. Yeah, yeah, I wouldn't necessarily either. And so it's, you know, it's an interesting web they've drawn and it's very relevant to now. It is tricky too to talk about because also like how do we, what we're going to do, sit here and say, like, we're pro what Rao Coley did, like, as he should do that?
Starting point is 00:15:53 Or, but what are we going to do? Say we're sad that it came out because Chris sucks. Like, no, we talk from the stepdad who's not fully the stepdad yet, but when he was like multiple things can be true at once and it's not all her fault. There's a lot of layers to the Chris situation, which Chris even points out that she's not the only one who did, like everyone sent her stuff. Yeah. Some of the teachers. Yeah. Which that makes it so, uh, so difficult. I'm finding it on this show, even characters like Sue have done things that have annoyed me. Like, other than Carrie and Tommy,
Starting point is 00:16:27 everyone seems to, and a little bit read, no, no, and our guidance counselor. I forget what his name is. Yeah, but he's, he's, I'm hoping he makes it through okay.
Starting point is 00:16:37 Me too, but it does feel like there's a lot of gray characters, and some of them are way on one end of the gray spectrum and some way on the other. But, like, I don't know, is Carrie's, is Margaret,
Starting point is 00:16:47 as bad as Chris Is Chris's dad as bad as Chris? Like, and like, how do we judge these characters? Is Carrie's dad worse than Margaret? Well, I mean, Carrie's dad kind of sucks in the most vapid way Because he's, yeah, I mean, he in and of himself is a bully And he, as we've seen, is not like sort of willing
Starting point is 00:17:16 to accept the circumstance of his own reality and you can bet that he probably, you know, as this, you know, he's got developments and stuff like that. No, no, Carrie's dad. Oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah. I mean, yeah. He saw that scene with Carrie's dad and Carrie's mom
Starting point is 00:17:30 and he's like, no, mental illness does not exist. Crazy is not real, you know? Oh, yeah, the whole thing is like a twisted web. You're talking about Chris's dad, right? Because Chris's dad is awful too. Carrie, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Moms and dad, there's a lot of parents, a lot of kids with C names. Totally. I guess two central kids was even, but anyway.
Starting point is 00:17:47 But anyway, yeah. They're all bad. I mean, it's a rough web. And it's like they want to do what they think is right for Carrie as parents. And I wonder in those scenes, what else are we not? So, like, you know, there's a whole world to the, what's his name, Ralph White and Margaret relationship that we don't get to see. And I'm like, you know, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:18:10 This is a draconian household, at least in some respects. And I can't imagine that if you're not. If you're the wife in that situation, that's going to be a great position of power or a great position wherein... We only have two minutes left. Can you guys give us two minutes? Thank you. I can't imagine if you're in a position of power. Yeah, I can't imagine if you're the mom. Sorry, I know they're not going to cut that out. And then I'm going to look like a bitch for saying because like two minutes left.
Starting point is 00:18:42 We're trying to give it to you guys. Yeah, yeah. I can probably tell them to get to... I can remove this thing. Yeah, it's like Margaret's not really in any position of power. So I, you want to believe that she and her husband would have at least had some kind of relationship as equals. But given what they believe, you know, I'm sure they align on something. But she's, she's had to have undergone some kind of abuse in that relationship. There's just no way it didn't happen.
Starting point is 00:19:11 Yes. In one respect or another, whether he's like out and out, you know, being physically abusive in some way. or if it's just this constriction, this, you know, very old testament sort of living that they're under. And then she's been abusive to Carrie. I'm looking forward to knowing what's going on with Emmeline because we know that she's like, I am real in a sense. Like, is she part of Carrie's subconscious or is really like she have to do with that other school place
Starting point is 00:19:40 and there's more to it or did she existed a different time and she was an accused witch and she's a ghost? Like there's so many different things that still could be happening. So I'm really curious about that. I am definitely curious about like what happens with, I'm described as the core four with the girls. And of course, how we get to prom because I have to assume Chris is sneaks in or something. We see her and Billy. They'll sneak in with the blood, right?
Starting point is 00:20:06 Yeah, exactly. Exactly. And I'm curious about some of the parent stuff too. Yeah, I just, I think that there's a lot. They've laid a lot of ground for me as a teller. television fan to really care about these characters. Also, as John and I are going through this, we have not checked in with the audience at all.
Starting point is 00:20:25 We're trying to just like, you know, we're avoiding that. We're just making our own opinions. I'm really curious when all of a sudden done if the show's working for people like it is for me. I almost just, I don't know, maybe it's just the flavor of these episodes, but like the same amount of like
Starting point is 00:20:38 furious discord that is happening in this riot outside the window is like kind of the array of different opinions. I imagine this might. Garner for some instinctual reason. That's just the vibe I get. But I guess I hope there's some kind of other thing at work with Emmeline because that is one element where I'm just like, it's a hard twist to pull off in these days because we've just seen it a bunch of times.
Starting point is 00:21:01 I know. Were people surprised by that? That would be shocking to me, but maybe. I hope there's at least some other, yeah, maybe she is somebody who's like, you know, trying to shine with Carrie or something. Or if it is just, I'm the, you know, badass in your subconscious waiting to be let out. Like, I think that's a little bit. if it's just that, that could be more
Starting point is 00:21:20 unique or seasoned or whatever. I was trying to like rearrange the letters in it, right? Because sometimes they do things like that. Like if I said it aligned backwards. Yeah, yeah. But so far. And Ilamy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:32 Exactly. On that note, we are going to get out of here. But thank you for joining us for Kerry. We wish Tara good health. We'll see what happens there. So much love to her. She'll dump some blood on us next time for continuing these. You're the one who wants to have a nose bleed, man.
Starting point is 00:21:47 That's me. That's what I'm using my telekinetic powers for, just to make my own noseble. We'll see you next time with a bunch of bloody noses. Oh, it would have been better if I stuck the landing. It's okay. The last thing I will say, I do think, because we are starting to see the, I really liked in the back and forth and the mid-mediation that you have so much of just Carrie and Chris just looking at each other.
Starting point is 00:22:12 And they've spent so much time with Carrie up till now being this sweet character and this character is constantly getting her heartbroken. Yeah, good point. But when she can, in these moments here, where they start to show, like, the real, like, I have nobody and I'm pissed off. Like, I... Don't make me hate you.
Starting point is 00:22:27 I can see, like, when she has that mode on in the couple moments we've seen it, I'm like, ah, yes. Because she's got to be able to play both sides of that. And in the casting, obviously, we've seen a lot more of one side. And so I'm like, oh, I can see the scary carry lurking in there, too. So, so glad that you said that. I'm really looking forward to seeing her punish her mom a little bit here and see what that were. That was very cathartic.
Starting point is 00:22:51 But also, you don't want to become who you hate. That's the problem because, yeah, when she snaps Carrie, Chris's nose, you do kind of, you're like, you know, little catharsis for a carrie there. When she's got that hand and, yeah, with her mind, just, yeah, it was a very rewarding moment in a show that, for good reason, is here to kind of make you feel bad. Totally. Well, we will see you guys next. time. Later, rejects. Love you guys. Be well. Be nice to each other. Don't post anything online. Don't cyberbullying. We're bully and rely. Don't bully.
