They will burst out of your chest.
There's so much fun to wear.
So money, so much chesties on my chesty, baby.
When it gets here for me and turn it down, turn it down real love so we can talk about this.
Aaron, Aaron, Aaron.
Andro.
I actually, you know what?
As disaster films go, I enjoyed it.
I like the characters a lot in this specifically.
Here's Brosnan and Linda Hamilton.
I like their chemistry.
I also liked, you know, kind of what the tragic opening that we got.
When I say I like it, I didn't like that.
But I mean, I like how they set up the character in terms of, okay, it's a very resourceful character.
He's, he's, he's experienced when it comes to volcanoes, also being in the situation.
So that later on in the film, when he's in this crazy situation, it's like, okay, he's cool as a cucumber for a reason because this is kind of like every day that ends in a Y for him.
But I mean, yeah, no, exactly.
It's just, it's, you know, it's work day for.
for him. But, you know, they said that up nice, but also, too, it's the relationship he has
with Linda Hamilton. You know, he wanted to have a family. He got robbed of that because of what
happened with the volcanic rock or whatever coming through the roof of his car in the very
beginning. Whereas Linda Hamilton, she does have a family and her husband abandoned them.
And I think it's very terrible, obviously, you know, and again, I've never, I've never had a wife
and kids. I don't know what that feeling is. I don't know the pressure. I'm not defending the man,
so I don't know how he felt, but obviously not a cool decision.
to make.
Not a cool guy.
But the point I'm making is I like how they found, you know,
it was very cathartic for both of the characters finding each other and, you know,
the experiences that they've had in the past and, you know, it was kind of intertwined
fate, if you will, like, obviously a shitty situation would have been nice if they just
would have met, obviously we don't have a movie then, but it would have been nice
if they would have met under better circumstances.
But the fact that they did, you know, have a love, you know, in such a dire situation and
they became a family like it actually was very endearing for me you know and you know with a
disaster film you know most of the time it's like I just want to see the disaster
which again was really well done for 1997 I thought most of the stuff was good yet some
rear projection shots a little outdated but which is fine it's 1997 I don't judge the movie on that
but again the reason I actually was invested in those action sequences is because me personally
I don't know how you felt I mean I will get to you in one second I promise but I actually
gave a shit about these characters at least Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton
and the kids.
They weren't irritating me.
I actually cared about these characters.
Aaron, your thoughts.
I hated it.
We're having fun.
We're having fun.
Just kidding.
It was a good time.
It was a really entertaining movie.
Yeah.
You know, we watched a lot of movies here.
Do you know?
I don't, no, I think I might have an inclination that we may.
We may not watch enough.
But no, I also enjoy the movie.
I think the action was really strong.
I was never bored watching it.
I was very entertained.
through and through.
This is definitely one of the stronger universal pictures that we've watched on this channel and just in life.
You know,
I understand why they cast Pierce Brosons.
He has a very calming, confident presence.
And I believed him in this role.
You know, he seemed like a very intelligent guy.
And I believed all of the other characters as well.
I liked the supporting team.
I liked Linda Hamilton and her as a mom slash mayor slash business.
owner slash newscaster it was cool it was a lot uh i thought all the destruction the way they
were able to pull that off impressive yeah yeah it was very very impressive and you really
bought into the stakes of what it would be like to actually have volcano uh enter your town
and it was awful and entertaining and scary and watching them go through these different
decisions and then the consequences of those decisions
and then having them get out of those decisions was also kept me on the edge of my seat.
It was like, ah, it was nail biting.
It was hair pulling stress levels.
And I just thought it was very, very well done.
Yeah, no.
The music was good.
We stand all the Dutch angles, you know, we're taking a lot of shots.
Not enough, not enough Dutch angles.
Besides the Dutch angles, though, I did like the cinematography in the film.
There was cool.
Again, I'm not a cinematographer.
I don't know a lot about camera angles and all that
I would have just my personal suggestion
I would have said maybe just a little less
and again I love touch angles
I really do
my whole thing is less is more with Dutch angles
because it's more noticeable
the more times you do it
watch Thor the first one
which I love that movie by the way
There's a lot of Dutch angles in that movie
and when you notice it
you'll notice how many times that they do
but if you only do it a few times very sporadically
you don't notice it.
And it can be very effective shot.
A little sprinkle.
Yeah, exactly.
But I loved a lot of the starting in close-up shot, panning back, staying in on long shot.
Like, those are not easy shots.
And to frame the scene that way, I appreciated that kind of cinematography.
So I know we kind of harped him making a little fun of all the Dutch angles.
It was just more out of fun, like just making fun of it kind of thing.
But I actually really appreciate the cinematography.
And some of the shots were like they actually, whether it be a visual CGI shot,
because obviously there were no drones back in 97, none that they were using in film at least.
And also, too, it's either a crazy visual CGI shot that they're coming in on the mountaintop
and it's like really shows you the scope of the film or it's either, you know, they're on a helicopter really doing that shot.
I appreciate cinematography like that.
They're getting their hands dirty.
I also thought, too, this film did a really good job of grounding us in kind of the bureaucracy of what happens in these types of situations.
like you have Pierce Brosnan like yes he's volcano racist and he's got that gut feeling and all
that stuff obviously he found the two bodies he found the squirrels and like his his Pierce
Brosnan tingle was going off totally understandable and obviously he's got traumatic you know things
going on in the past when it comes to volcanoes yeah but again I and I again I'm not defending
the Paul the the main the guy his boss I'm not defending him I do understand even though it was
pissing us off because we're the audience. We get to see everything that they don't.
I do understand where he was coming from. When it's like, dude, like, I will call a panic.
We need the proof if I'm going to do that. I'm not trying to get people killed. So, like, I didn't
think he was a vindictive dickhead is what I'm trying to say, Pierce Broson's boss. I just think he was
just not doing a good job. His job. But again, he didn't have the proof that they needed to call
that panic. And once they got the proof, he immediately went to action. And I do like that the
character did acknowledge, hey, I was, I mean, it doesn't fix the situation. It doesn't help in that
case. But I do appreciate, you know, I don't know if that gives him redemption or anything, but I do
appreciate that he said, hey, I was wrong. You were right. I'm so sorry. So again, he's not a
vindictive piece of crap. It's just he didn't do his job well enough. But again, I understand
where he was coming from in terms of I need the proof if I'm going to evacuate a town of 7,400 or
whatever it is. Yeah, but I thought you should just trust Pierce Brasen, the amount of things that
he's seen in the places right i agree with that too i yeah you're you're trying to air on the side
of caution you don't want to cause unnecessary panic yeah i understand it from that perspective
i don't agree with it but you know we have to have some semblance of conflict for the movie to
happen yeah of course if it's gonna be that it's gonna be frustrating and then it's it's it's not
satisfying to see him right but it's like well yeah you got to listen to the main character
because he's the guy who knows what he's doing and also
Shout out to Grandma.
Grandma was...
That was a very heroic.
It was very heroic and it was very sad to see her die.
And yeah, she just loved her grandkids so much.
I love the fact that this family loved each other so much and they were willing to go out and risked their lives for one another.
I thought that was very admirable.
I'm sure there's people out there to say, what the hell was Grandma doing?
You got this mountain exploding.
Why is she still staying in the house?
I agree with that, by the way.
I'm not disagreeing with that.
They did a good job, though, of painting the picture.
like when they showed that picture of her
with her son and her husband
like this. Yeah and again
like she I don't know how much longer
she had in life. I mean she was
she didn't look like she was way too old.
She probably in there like. Yeah no no no no for sure
but like she's lived most of her life
and like this house has so much
sentimental value and meaning to her
that like I'm not gonna leave in
like until like it was literally lava filled
is when she left it. Um but I do like
that heroic act that I didn't want it to happen
but it was a nice, um,
moment for her character, even though, like, if she would have just left there at the appropriate
time, they wouldn't have had to go there. But again, events have to have to unfold so that
we can have a film. So understandable. But again, they gave her a good reason for staying there
as long as she did because of how much the house meant to her and the memories that she cherished
with her husband and her deadbeat of a son. So I get that. I agree. So should we read
some trivia? Yes, boy. First of all, let's play the guessing game. At a
What do you think the average rating on IMDB was for this film at a 10?
Can we do Rotten Tomatoes too?
Sure.
Guys, we play this game at home where we guess the Rotten Tomato scores of movies,
both for critics and audiences.
So we can like, next review, we can like switch off.
Yeah, and I'm always off on the Run.
He's always off by one.
We do this at home all the time.
He's very good at the game.
He's always off by one.
Okay, so let's do Rotten Tomatoes first.
Okay, Rotten Tomatoes.
Tomatoes.
Tomato meter for critics and tomato meter for fans.
Okay, you can show them because I can't see.
on the camera okay oh i'm going to guess i'm going to guess 80 no no no i'm going to guess
74 this is critics of what critics critics critics 74 yes lower 69 lower 60 lower 60 lower really 55
lower no dude are you serious 50 lower no no way way
Siebel, oh, no, Siskel and Iber, dude.
What the hell?
30.
Bingo.
On the money?
That's insane.
Okay, 74 for audiences.
Lower.
No, people hated it.
52?
Lower.
No, dude, what?
Okay.
40?
Lower.
30?
High.
higher 35 higher 39 lower 38 yo they don't like this one this is one I disagree with on both
this was fun we're having fun we're having fun but I actually do disagree on this one with that
those scores but against subjective but what's your IMDB rating out of 10 and with those scores
I'm going to get it's 5.5.
Higher.
6.9?
Lower.
6.6.
Lower.
6.
Even?
Yeah.
Bingo.
All righty.
You ready for some trivia?
Ready for some trivia?
I'm shocked.
Yeah.
No.
The Rotten Tomatoes one.
The IMDB one, I can understand that score, but the Rotten Tomatoes are, wow, a little shocking.
Cast and crew of this movie found themselves in a distribution race with the 20th Century Fox.
with 20th Century Fox, rather, which was producing the film Volcano in 1997 at the time due to a sped-up production schedule.
The movie reached theaters almost three months earlier than Volcano and had better box office success.
I believe, yeah, Volcano, it's the Tommy Lee Jones film, right?
Yeah, it is.
You know, it's interesting.
A lot of these disaster movies, a lot of them came in pairs.
And what I mean by that, so, like, 96, you had Mars attacks and Independence Day.
I still haven't seen Mars Attacks.
I won't watch it so bad.
Oh, that's, yeah, that'd be a good one for you.
But, and then in, what do you have?
In 98, you have Armageddon Deep Impact.
It's like you always have these movies.
And now this year, 97, you have Dante's Peak and Volcano.
Oh, wow.
You always have these pairs coming out with these disaster movies.
It's interesting how they had that.
And like from 96 to 98.
That's a trip.
Yeah.
Like all these two just like, well, our turn to have one.
We've got to find out what's the better one?
The volcanic ash was really, the volcanic ash was really fine newspaper shaving.
Oh, that's a lot of newspapers.
Yeah, seriously.
Especially when it's covering the town like that?
All crater scenes were shot at Mount St. Helens, Helens.
Helens.
Helena?
Helens.
Helens.
I think they said it in the movie.
Yeah.
Most of the film's exteriors were shot in Wallace, Idaho.
Dante's Peak and surrounding scenery were then digitally added.
Ah.
A great many special effects in this movie were practically special effects using
real-world models or full-size properties and vehicles.
That's what I thought.
That makes sense.
Look pretty good.
At around the 35-minute mark, the shirt Greg wears on the first day of observing
Dante's Peak is a graph showing the eruptions of the Cascade volcanoes in the past
4,000 years.
Okay.
At around the 17-minute mark, according to director Roger Donaldson on the DVD commentary,
the camera Pierce Brosnan uses when he first investigates the volcano surroundings is Pierce
Brosnan's own camera.
Hmm.
Amazing.
Interesting.
The dog that played Ruffy were wolf hybrids, part wolf and part
Airdale Terrier.
Cool.
Charles Callahan passed away from a heart attack on November 25th,
1997, nine months after the release of Dante's Peak.
During that time, he was able to complete six other projects for TV and film.
He was best known as the grotesque,
scampering crab-like head victim of the alien monster in the thing.
That's this guy.
he passed away nine months after the film
is that what it is nine months or
yeah in November 1997 he passed
yeah
Roger Donaldson the director was
attached was attracted to the project
having once been a geology student himself
I'm just looking for anything that has
Robocop in it because I know those sounds
I'm telling you those sounds
the only the only time Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton
worked together they became friends after they finished
work on the film. How good a
friends. I know he's been married for years
years. The most
part of their inner shots in halls and rooms
are filmed in Dutch angle. No.
You don't say. I couldn't
tell. It's a technique
where the camera is rotated between
25 and 45 grades. Respect
the horizon and a
side or another for giving a sensation
of uncomfortability or
restlessness. Well, they should have
done it more.
Michael Douglas was originally set to play the lead
Which Michael Douglas
We're talking about Michael Douglas
Or Michael Keaton Douglas
I know he changed his name recently
To go by that
I've always known that by the way
I have
I have yeah
Roger Donaldson had not met
Pierce Brosnan before making this movie
He had seen Brosnan play James Bond
And Golden Eye
A film he needs to watch
And the two got to know each other
Before filming on this movie commenced
awesome
cicaronian cheese
Kurt Russell
was once
considered for the role
of Harry Dalton
I could totally see
him playing that role
I think
Pierce Brosnan was great
but I could totally
see him playing
where is it
a roboca
something for the Robocop
we use Google
the Robocop thing
when Paul falls into the water
you hear the Will home screen
that we knew
the second collaboration
between Roger Donaldson
and cinematographer
I always mispronounce the one
I told you directed
exit wounds
Doom and
Romeo Mastine
and Crayal the grave
Andre Barth
We, oh, we, I don't know, sorry.
Sorry, I miss Brown, so you guys know me.
Pierce Brasen's character name is Harry Dalton.
Timothy Dalton played James Bond before Brazen.
Oh, I should have said that during the reaction.
I caught the Dalton thing.
I just kind of remember which Bond was.
I am so mad at myself.
Yeah, he was, uh, he was James Bond in the living daylights and license to kill, I believe, 1987, 1989.
Your favorite two James Bond films.
Yeah.
Um, I know him so well.
When the lava, when the volcanic lava begins to destroy.
the mountain cabin everyone runs to get onto a small boat the first time the scene was filmed the
boat actually sank jamey rene smith could not swim in pierce brosnan held her until a crew member
pulled her from the water that reminds me this is not a spoiler from the film i wouldn't do it
because you haven't seen it from the 1975 classic which is one of my top five favorite films
known as jaws the boat actually it's not i'm not spoiling the movie it's something you anyway
it's something that's something that actually happened i'm sure most you know like the
boat that they were on
in the second half of the film
actually sank in real life
and then the camera
the crew and all them are like
like save the sound department
at the actors
wow yeah it's so funny
well I guess
depends on your perspective
I wasn't there so I think it's funny
at around one hour and 28 minutes
Pierce Brosnan said in a press interview
shortly after the film's release that he could
practice shouting the
that he practiced shouting the line
and I quote, it's a pyroclastic cloud.
It's a pyroclastic cloud.
It's a pyroclastic cloud.
It's a pyroclastic cloud.
It's a pyroclastic cloud.
It's a pyroclastic cloud.
In front of a mirror for six days prior to shooting the scene.
Bronson stated, it is the movie's key emotional scene,
and I needed to get that enunciation just right.
That's acting.
Good on you.
Good on you.
Good on you.
Just looking.
One more.
Just seeing if there's a, you know what.
One more time.
I don't think we're going to find it.
No, I'm not.
But there's an interesting one here at 57 minutes.
The parked school bus that is crushed by the falling church steeple says,
Heard County School District on the side, a nod to producer Gail Ann Hurd.
I did not see the Hurd part or I would have pointed that one out.
Aaron's favorite producer that he didn't know about.
My favorite one of all time.
One, one.
Okay, guys, thank you so much for checking us out.
It's been fun.
Until the next time, you guys.
Duceus.
You know?
