Join Andrew Gordon & Roxy Striar as they burn rubber in the late, great Tony Scott’s 1990 NASCAR epic, Days of Thunder. Tom Cruise stars as hot-shot rookie Cole Trickle (Top Gun: Maverick, Jack Reacher), whose harrowing debut crash at Phoenix sets his career—and his life—on a high-stakes trajectory. Veteran crew chief Harry Hogge (Robert Duvall, The Godfather, Apocalypse Now) comes out of retirement to mentor him, while neurosurgeon Dr. Claire Lewicki (Nicole Kidman, Moulin Rouge!, The Hours) brings both medical help and romance to the pit. Cole’s fierce rivalry with champion Rowdy Burns (Michael Rooker, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Walking Dead) ignites on-track drama, and his teammate Russ Wheeler (Cary Elwes, The Princess Bride, Saw) pushes the tension even further. Rounding out the crew is team owner Tim Daland (Randy Quaid, Independence Day, The Last Starfighter) and car chief Buck Bretherton (John C. Reilly, Step Brothers, Chicago). Andrew & Roxy break down every unforgettable scene—from the slingshot pass at Darlington and the fiery crash into the Texas oil tank, to the emotional, high-velocity finale at Daytona where Cole risks everything to pull a friend from a burning wreck. Tune in for an in-depth reaction to the film’s gravity-defying stunts, behind-the-scenes Bruckheimer flair, and Hans Zimmer’s thunderous score! them in just a bit is there anything i forgot roxy no you nailed it man i nailed it let's race
on into it's that juject nation we will race on i see what you did there i did that that
clever that was good that was good all right days of thunder commence
Awesome. I'm assuming there's no mid.
They didn't really do that then, but I wish that there was because I do want to see more just because I'm so into this.
Yeah, no, for sure. I mean, that's a good thing. We just watched Days of Thunder.
If you are listening on Apple or Spotify, use those race car hands of yours to give us five star rings.
We would appreciate it. Also, if you want cool teas, not like the ones we are wearing, reject nation shop.com.
Get yourself some cool shejerk gear and some other amazing stuff on there.
know there's chesties agatha stuff and a lot of other great stuff on there roxy would you like
to start would you like me too you tell me you're the boss bib oh okay um well i thought this film was
a lot of fun um obviously the race car stuff the cinematography we'll get into all that um but i think
the the thing that i gravitated the most towards was the characters and also the relationships
between like Tom or Cole and Harry and Cole and uh what was Nicole Kidman's uh whatever
Nicole Kidman Claire uh with Cole and Claire I mean their chemistry was just obviously we know
they married in real life but their chemistry on screen was great um yeah their bedroom
that that was hot um but also yeah but also too I like how she balanced him out and and elevated
him too like you know helped him find you know in terms of like he's this hot shot cocky
car driver and has this major ego and she puts him in check that one scene i thought i thought that
also showed her powerhouse kind of as an i like to go because tom cruises i know he's not like
wasn't the megastar yet i mean done top gun done some other big films up to this point but still like
he's a big heavyweight at this point still like and she went right up there and showed like her
acting prowess and uh in that scene i thought that was incredible what she did right there and that was
one of my favorite scenes where she, like, let him have it. And I didn't think that scene was going
to take that shift, too, by the way, because she was just like, no, hey, I'll go with you. And then
it really shifted really quickly, which I liked. And the best way I would describe, sorry, my
is the best way I would describe this film, too, is, because I've been told for many years,
it's Topka in race car. I'd say that's a pretty well description of the film, too. I mean,
there's other elements, obviously, to it. It's the same director, of course, and same star. But I could
see it's it's it's got that popcorn flavor but again it's it's the like I said the
thing that I gravitated and like I said towards the most was the relationship and also
too I like the deeper elements too like in you know when when it came to Tom Cruise's character
when they unraveled some stuff nicely organically with his dad like a look at all the music
look at all the music Tina Turner share we got Chicago we got Elton John geez they
are you kidding they spent a ton of money on copyright for this stuff
I want to hear everything you're saying,
but I can't stop grooving.
Bob Dylan,
oh my God.
You mentioned Tim.
In his Guns and Roses cover,
like just,
come on,
Hans Zimmer and Billy Idol.
Yeah.
Joan Jett,
the goddess of all goddesses.
Has there been a score soundtrack combo like this?
It was incredible.
And Hans Zimmer,
as usual, nailed it.
But what I was saying is I really like to
how they were really took their time,
letting us in, I like the vulnerable moments we have with Cole, like where he's opening up to Harry.
Obviously, we got that, you know, where they're really going at each other's throats and they can't stand each other at first when he gets into it.
And then we find out, first of all, this guy knows nothing about racing, which I was not expecting.
Cool reveal, man.
Yeah, that was a really cool reveal.
And then, you know, then him to letting him know about the whole his stolen yachts thing and then, oh, well, something's about to happen here.
and then letting us know that, you know, his dad, like, stole yachts, put his name on it,
and then he got embarrassed by it.
So, you know, I thought that was an interesting insight in his character.
And I liked when he was being vulnerable with Harry.
And he really looked up to Harry as a father figure,
especially after everything he had been dealt with.
So I think, like, those deeper moments in the film is, you know,
something I really appreciated.
I think that it was just really, truly such a fun, feel good movie.
you know we don't really make movies like this anymore in terms of if you think about it at the end of the day cole's character has no arc he doesn't then stop racing because he decides that she said your ego's too much he doesn't say i'm gonna stop doing this because i don't need to do it to impress anybody yeah he just is like nah i'm a race car driver this is my job but i'm gonna do it and i'm gonna do it and i'm gonna try to be the best
person I can be like I've been trying to do from jump, and of course there are moments where we see
his character develop. But usually now, if this came out in 2025, it's all about where you start
and how you change as a person. Colby, Colby, Cole from day one to day, whatever we, a year later.
And I love that because I loved him. And I loved watching the journey and how everybody else around
him kind of just has to get on board. When you're that kind of guy and this is your dream and this is what
you want it's just you know when when he says to harry he's like what harry's like why are you coming back
and he says uh because he asked me to and harry's like bullshit that's not why you're coming back
it's not because he asks you to it's because this is in your blood this is your dream this is your
passion this is your world this is the one thing that you feel like you have been given the gift
to do despite not knowing anything about it you know like you're not you're not some prodigy who
just like research knows everything about cars and all the studying he's like yeah i why
watched ESPN a couple times and all of a sudden I could drive.
And I just think that there's something so cool about that.
And I love the relationships also.
I can't say enough good things about the score and the soundtrack.
I like the way that it looked.
It wasn't so gritty, grainy, which sometimes is so hyper-focused.
This had that soft, bright color, cool feel to it.
And I just thought that it looked, it sounded, and was acted brilliant.
And I just can't believe how much
I was smiling during this.
Like I love this.
I honestly think this is crazy to say.
I honestly think I preferred this movie to Top Gun.
Interesting.
And I love, I really like Top Gun.
And I love Top Gun Maverick.
But yeah, I had a ton of fun with this one too.
And I love Top Gun too.
Are you saying you prefer this over the Top Gun franchise?
No, I think I prefer this to the first Top Gun.
But Topkin Maverick, you would prefer over this.
I think I do just because that movie is.
Top Gun Maverick is like such an amazing.
It's so.
brilliant and it had to do it had a way bigger risk factor than this did you know that just had to
accomplish so much more so i think that probably but just comparing this to top gun i think that it's
interesting because top gun gets so much more love than this does right it's talked about so much more
yeah yeah of course for sure i look i want to ask you something yes oscar nominee i asked you
beforehand before we look it up what's your guess after seeing the movie cinematography i feel like
it's got to do something with sound mixing
or like? Either sound mixing. Okay, I'll look it up
now. I'll look. I'll look. I could
be wrong on this, Roxy, but I think
I read whether it was a year
or so ago that Tom Cruise is possibly
trying to get a sequel up for this film. I would
be so obsessed with that. I hope
he does. I mean, I know the Mission Impossible
series is supposedly supposed
to end this year.
But I'd be, I mean, especially... I love that franchise
like you do, too. Mission Impossible is
like near and dear to my heart. I...
Me, you, Tara, I mean, we all love it.
Including the second film, which is by far the weakest of the series,
I love every single one of those films.
There's not a film I will not watch of those films.
But point being is like, I'll watch anything Tom Cruise isn't just in general,
but I, after what-
It is sound.
It was best sound is what it was not even for.
You called it.
Because I couldn't, and it deserves it, man.
Oh, no, for sure.
For sure.
You feel like you're there when you're listening to it.
I was just like, yes, yes.
The sound, man, that I, what beat it?
I wish it won.
Good call.
Roxy with the call.
Thank you.
I did appreciate the cinematography.
Some of those shots, though,
where they're getting close up with those POVs.
Like,
I'm curious.
I know they obviously jerry rigged on to some cars and stuff like that,
but how close they were getting.
They probably zoomed in,
but still really impressive because,
I mean,
you got to like,
I mean,
you're going at a crazy fast speed,
too,
so.
I also really want to check out what Nicole Kimman did prior to this.
Oh, to 1990.
Yeah,
I'm curious because it's got to be so intimidating playing across from Tom Cruise.
Yeah, no, for sure.
I will say this, too.
You really praised Robert Duvall when we were watching his performance.
Yeah.
His character really feels lived in.
Like, you can feel the history of the character that he's been involved in racing,
coaching racing for many years.
And also, too, you can feel that past event of his friend, like, really kind of
daunts him a bit, too.
And this whole, you know, experiences.
The guilt.
sure and like again Robert DeVall like he takes like what could be popcorn material not could be not taken by an actor of his caliber as taken so seriously and he gives it is all and I appreciate that from the second that you see that first little chuckle when he's in the tractor and it's like you know when an actor is experienced and confident when they're making choices like that because that's a director can't pull that out of you yeah you've got you have that you've come to the table with that in mind and so I just he he he he is
Obviously, he's a legend, but he's just, he deserves to be a legend because of how good he is.
Okay, so Nicole Kidman.
Before 1990.
Before 1990.
Before 1990, did a lot of TV movies.
Okay.
And I'm wondering if they were here or Australia.
But her most recent prior to 1990 was a TV mini series called Bangkok Hilton.
Don't know it.
And then a movie called Dead Calm in 89.
and a movie called Emerald City in 88.
I don't know those at all.
I was going to say you're the T.
No, these are movie movies.
Oh, these are movie movies.
I've never heard of these movies.
Me neither.
And I'm looking at them and I'm like,
what is that?
Dead Calm was 89.
Okay.
Billy Zane was in it.
Sam Neal was in it.
Oh, God.
Okay.
These are some pretty big actors.
Yeah.
And Nicole Kempem is the star.
And Philip Noyes was the director.
Who was it?
Philip Nois is his name.
Oh, I think I know Philip Noise.
Did he, I think he did a...
He did the giver.
And I think he did it in present line of danger or something.
I don't see that, but maybe.
Rabbit proof, quiet American, the giver, sliver.
But anyway, so she did that movie the year before.
But that's pretty much it.
So this is her first, like...
Like real big, big, big role.
First big hit, I guess, would be...
Yeah.
I'm shook at that, this movie not being more...
talked about in at least in my circles like before watching this have you heard a million people
be like you have to see days of thunder because i've never heard that i've not heard like a ton of
people talked about like i said um i didn't talk about it on our youtube intro just more on the
patreon that my parents owned this film on bHS they put it on in the background i did not watch
it and if i did it was three or four i didn't remember the thing um but that's all i knew about
is that i owned it or my parents owned it i didn't it's not something at any of my
cinephile friends or anyone really like spoke about anything tom cruz related was either mission
impossible interview with the vampire top gun something that was never well i just watched interview with
the vampire for this channel for the first time i love that movie by the way that was the first thing
i ever saw tom cruz in he scared the crap out of me you didn't hear that i hated that what you didn't
hear that i hated the movie oh okay i love that movie but it all has to do with a personal qualm
Oh, okay.
Anyway, it's been a while.
It's been a long time since I saw it.
I just remember Tom.
That's the first thing I ever saw Tom Cruise.
I never saw him as anything else but a vampire.
He scared the crap out of me.
Wait, you want to know something crazy?
Yeah.
Reject Nation, the basketball playoffs are heating up.
And if you want to turn your takes into something real.
You've got to check out prize picks.
Our go-to in the Daily Fantasy Sports world.
If you've never tried it, here's how it works.
It's relatively simple.
You pick two to six players, and you guess whether or not
They'll get more or less than the stat line prize picks sets.
This week, I'm looking at the basketball board and selecting Donovan Mitchell for more than 26 points,
Jason Tatum for more than nine rebounds, Nikola Yoakicch for more than 25 points,
and Anthony Edwards for more than four assists.
Basketball terminology.
It's that simple.
If your picks hit, you win.
Even my dumbnogging can keep up with that.
And the more picks that you string together, the more money you can make,
up to 1,000 times your entry.
And what's cool is, it's not just basketball.
You can mix and match players across different sports like baseball, football, hockey, even e-sports.
It's like building your own custom bet.
It's all based on player stats and you're in full control.
Plus, they invented something called FlexPlay, which means even if one of your picks misses, you can still win cash.
And payouts are super fast.
I've seen it hit in under 15 minutes.
So here's what you can do.
You can download the app today and use code Rejects to get $50 instantly after you play your first $5 lineup.
Again, that's code Rejects, $50 instantly after your first $5.00 lineup.
first $5 lineup.
Price Fix, run your game.
The guy who wrote this with
Robert Town. Robert Town.
Right.
Wrote Chinatown.
Chinatown, okay.
Anything else?
Yeah.
He wrote shampoo.
He wrote...
Is shampoo with Warren Beatty?
Yes.
I don't know how I knew that.
And Goldie Hawn.
Yeah.
He wrote, let's see, a lot of stuff.
Tequila Sunrise.
I don't know.
what that is uh the two jakes the firm love affair mission impossible oh the first mission impossible
cool so they worked the end possible too okay cool he wow that's that's cool what are you looking
up so i got a little thing before i do trivia there's a little thing i've been doing here on the
channel now sure before we get into that what do you think the film made domestic oh i have no idea
just just guess what would you what would you guess domestic I have no idea I have no idea
Take a guess.
I don't know.
Do you want me to tell you?
Sure.
I don't know.
$82 million domestically.
Okay.
So, but worldwide.
Was that good at the time?
I don't know.
Maybe.
I don't know.
Worldwide, it made $87 million.
So I only made four more million like international.
Wow.
So it must not a play.
No, I don't know.
Box office for 1990.
I have no idea.
I'm just seeing what the budget was.
I'm just curious.
And then, oh, it's $60 million budget.
So I don't know what the marketing went to.
them but that would mean it probably didn't make money really and then really quick another i know you
don't like playing the guessing game but i'm just curious after what we just watched okay would you guess
the rotten tomato score was from the critics i just saw it on my phone oh you did yeah did you see both
i literally just looked it up so i don't want to i don't want to pretend well we can't i could have
pretended roxy could have looked like a genius guys i just shows you how authentic and honest she is um
should i read some trivia i'm trying to think what i thought what did you think it was before you
saw the number on Rotten Tomatoes.
I personally would have said, like, in my mind, I would have said 60, 65, but I know, like,
the way critics operate, so I was going to go more in the 45 to 48 range.
And I saw, I think it was 38.
I would have hoped that it would have been like 80 something.
Yeah.
But I saw first, the reason I looked it up on Rotten Tomatoes is because I saw first on
IMDB that it had like a 5.8 star or something.
Oh, that should have got higher than that person.
Maybe it was a six or something.
whatever it is on here.
It's 6.1 on 9.1, yeah, that's too low for...
I think it should be a little bit higher for sure than that.
I agree.
Okay, so hit me with your best shot.
Okay.
Production began without a finished script.
Scenes were often written the day of filming during one driving sequence.
Tom Cruise actually had to read his lines off cue cards attached to his windshield,
which resulted in a minor car accident.
Oh, my God.
For subsequent driving sequences, Cruz was fitted with a special earpiece.
to have lines fed to him.
Oh, my God.
That's crazy.
Jeez.
That is crazy.
The movie was conceived by Tom Cruise when he and Paul Newman were allowed to test one of Rick Hendrick's race cars.
Tom's first lap was in excess of 180 miles per hour.
What's the fastest you were driven?
I think I've gotten to 100 just one time.
It was just late at night.
I was just doing it for fun just to see.
Imagine a 180?
No, I don't want to.
What do race cars?
Did you know what they go?
I have no idea.
Yeah, not sure.
At Daytona for the final race of the movie, gentlemen, start your engines is the voice of Burt Reynolds.
Oh, that's wild.
I never would have guessed that.
You know another cool thing about this movie is that you and I, especially me, I'm sure you know more about racing than I do because I literally know nothing about it.
I enjoyed the hell out of this.
And that's cool that they made it so accessible for people that don't know the sport at all.
At all.
No, I agree with you.
And I don't know much about racing either.
I just know Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon,
and I know you go in a circle and a lot.
I know Danica Patrick.
It's the only race car driver I've ever heard of in my life.
But no, I agree with you.
It was nice, too, for novices like us, like, okay, this is simple.
Self-explanatory.
Yeah, and I'm sure if you are, if you follow the sport,
then probably you would have taken even more out of this.
Like when they're saying things, I'm sure it was kind of more accurate.
Or you might go, this is so inaccurate.
Inaccurate as possible, yeah, like about the tires or what.
whatever like no because there's sometimes where I'm watching a baseball movie I'm like okay
what they're saying is right or I'm watching choreography I'm like this is so awful
yeah but yeah some footage for the movie was shot during the 1990 Daytona 500 two additional
cars driven by Bobby Hamilton and Tommy Ellis were added to the rear of the field for the
express purpose of shooting them for this film they were not officially scored and left
the race track after 100 miles 40 laps were completed at one point in the race
leader Dale Earnhardt even lapped
in the movie, or even lapped the movie cars.
I thought I saw Dale Earnhardt at the beginning.
That's what I was saying.
Look like him.
The scene where Cole and Rowdy
destroy a pair of rental cars by racing them
through the city streets,
loosely referenced early 1950s NASCAR superstars,
Joe Weatherly and Curtis Turner,
each of whom were known to rent cars,
race and crash them with abandoned.
Damn.
That's crazy.
I would not want to rent cars to those guys.
No.
Let's see.
That's crazy.
Don Simpson, Jerry Brockhammer, and sometimes Robert Town, the writer, one of the writers,
often started their days on set having arguments with the director, Tony Scott, over how to shoot scenes.
Meanwhile, the crew sat around, getting paid, sometimes for 20 hours a day.
Oh, my God.
Some later said that they had made so much overtime on the film that they could have gone on vacation for four full months after the rap date.
Oh, my God.
argue away guys we're we're just chilling here you you guys that's so crazy because this is what
bothers me so much clearly your director knows what they're doing that's why they you hired them like
why in our directors we should trust why are we picking fights with our directors on sets all the time right
right i agree with you uh tom cruise wanted kurt russell for the role of rowdy i believe that's the one
that michael rucker played it was through cruise that kurt russell became aware of the film back
a year later. I've not seen backdraft. I never even heard of that. Oh, it's a, so you don't know
anything what it's about? It's a firefighter film directed by Ron Howard, but I've always wanted to see it.
And it stars Kurt Russell? Kurt Russell, yeah. I've always wanted to see that. I've heard of
backdraft, huh? Let comment below, let Roxy and I do that or some, I mean, I would love to do that, please.
I've never heard of it. I mentioned that to you earlier. Tom Cruise and Robert Deval worked together again
many years later in Jack Reacher, I already mentioned. Which is another movie I haven't seen.
Roxy needs to get on that.
I love that.
That movie is so damn underrated to me.
I'm so I love that first Jack Reacher movie so much.
All right, a couple spoilers, and then we'll call it.
The scene where Cole leaves the pits after a race to hit Russ Wheeler is based on an actual event during the 1987 all-star race at Charlotte, North Carolina, between drivers Bill Elliott and Dale Earnhardt.
I'm sure that their adrenaline is pumping so hard and heavy.
Hell yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, my God.
That's wild.
What a dangerous sport, man.
Oh, my, I'm never getting that damn race car and do that.
Wow.
Not even by myself just to go around lap going that fast.
I'd be scared I'd smash into a wall or something.
Yeah, of course.
Despite the budget overruns and delays reportedly, it was only after shooting was finished
that the filmmakers discovered they had neglected to film Cole, trickles, car crossing, the finish line at Daytona.
Oh, my God.
Yeah, you kind of need to film that.
You know, we need to see him when.
So, when they did a reshoot?
I'm guessing because we saw.
all right so yeah um all right i'll read one more let me just find one worthy i guess i'll do the last one
here during the interviews before the daytona 500 at the climax of the film russ wheeler tells
the interviewer that if cole trickle comes near him during the race he will put him into the wall
that comment would very likely get russ disqualified from the race find and possibly suspended from
the next few races since russ was basically threatening to deliver deliberately endanger another
driver. Yeah, you can't do that in sports, obviously. Yeah. I mean, I like the, hey, if he kind of,
he's going to be in my rear view of window or whatever, mirror, whatever he said like that line.
I like that. Yeah, I'll barely see him. Like the deliberate threat. Yeah. This is a movie. So you just
get away with stuff like that. I'm fine with the dramatization. Again, this was a blast. I had a great
time. Totally. I would love it if Tom Cruise does a second one as we saw as we saw with Top Gun
Maverick. It does not matter how much time.
says by give let this man do whatever he wants especially a sequel to something from the past i'm
roxy and i are down yeah that would be so good any final thoughts by the way i did not ask
terrible hosting by me how did how did this film make you how do you how do you feel now after
watching this film it was not terrible hosting terrible i'm a terrible host um i i just was in
a good mood honestly like i really felt smiley during this um it's just nice to have a movie that
you put on and you just fucking love it like
It's just awesome.
It's just so much fun.
Just nice to watch.
I'm in the same mind as you.
Like it had been a long day.
I went to the doctor.
I went to the car shop because my car is always there apparently.
And they told me.
You should see if he drives it.
How it does after that?
Yeah, I'm going to drive it like coal.
I'm sure my car will be much better.
Every time I go to take my car for an oil change, they're like, you owe this much, you owe this much.
You owe this much.
This is miss.
I'm like.
And your brakes and your rotors.
It's everything.
I'm like, I bring this car in all the time,
but at least this movie put a smile on my face.
So, yeah, again, let us know in the, if you have stayed with us this long,
we appreciate it.
We love you guys.
Let us know in the comments.
What did you think of Days of Thunder?
Is this one of your favorite Tom Cruise films?
Where would you put it on the pantheon of Tom Cruise films?
And also, do you want to see a sequel to Days of Thunder, Roxy?
And I definitely do.
Yeah, we shall check in with you guys and see you on later in the next video.
Take care.
Marco Tunstil.
Hey.
I would love to race you.
Ooh, that sounds like the name of a race car guy.
Marco Tunstill.
I'll tell you, man.
I feel like cars are too easy.
Mm-hmm.
We gotta spice this thing up a little bit.
I'm thinking chariots.
Chariot race.
Holy crap.
Eight horses.
Coliseum.
Yes.
To the death.
To the death race.
2000. It'll be like, you know, geared up.
It's apocalyptic chariot racing.
So you're like Mario Kart, but in just like an arena.
It's like a circular arena. It's just weapons and melee.
The horse's armor is made out of automobiles.
Yeah. Each one looks like a different car.
Oh, that would be cool.
I'd have a Mustang.
Yeah, you would.
You would have a Bronco.
And a Toyota camera
And a Toyota can of Saturn
Yeah, I think that's a good idea
That'd be cool, man
I think like Marco Tunstill
I get vibes that you would probably know
What to do with a horse
You would know how to
To shoe a horse
Yeah, you would probably know what to do
I think he would know how to love a horse
He would know how to love a horse
You know how to kill my horses
Oh no
In order to get ahead in the game
He would charm your horses and then make them trample your body.
Oh, so smart.
So smart.
He's got 16 horses now.
I don't know why we don't write for Hollywood or a red box movie.
I don't understand.
Marco, this is a great idea.
I'll see you in the field.
You and my dead horses.
Yes.
