Citizens of the Reject Nation, it's me, Tara Erickson, I'm back with this guy.
Starting point is 00:01:07 Say your name. My name is Andrew, and I'm so excited to... No, you forgot the Flash Gordon. Say your name. Andrew Flash Gordon. Yes, and I'm so excited that you are back. Oh, Tara, we missed here. I'm alive, you guys.
Starting point is 00:01:23 This might air is the first fun to be back at The Real Rejects. I did film another reaction with Gregory. I don't know which one's going to come out. first. But I love you guys. I miss you so much. I miss Flash Gordon so much. If you're listening on Apple or Spotify, please give this five stars. Tell us how great we are. Oh my goodness. And let us know what faction you think we would do. She's definitely, well, we want to be divergent, obviously. But I think you would be dauntless without the mind control. But I don't know what I would be, but definitely not. You still don't know? Yeah. Definitely not. I think
Starting point is 00:02:00 I'd be one of them. Either farmer or stiff possibly, but yeah. Yeah. I love this movie. It was great. What are you, what is your first, like, right off the bat? I mean, I just, I love the world building, just the, I mean, obviously when I say the environment, just like, it's interesting, like, how they capture everything, just like, post, it's just got that post-apocalyptic feel. Obviously, they said there was this great war at the beginning. And then you get that, hold on, sorry, let me just turn this down. Well, then you get that whole, you know, vibe of that totalitarian government feel. And it's just, I just think the whole world is interesting or this in Chicago, whatever. And then there's five factions. And then everything is very, like, devoid of choice. And, like, you know, you go in these factions.
Starting point is 00:02:48 And then that's your world now, you know, faction over family. And it's, I just thought, again, the world building is so done so elaborate, done so well. And I thought there were some really good twist in this, you know, from four with his father and just the mom being dauntless, right? I mean, there were some really good twist in this. But I think the thing that I gravitated towards most was Shalene Woodley. Yeah. She was phenomenal. I loved, I thought her character and also four were just really fleshed out.
Starting point is 00:03:19 I really enjoyed their chemistry was electric. That was number one. I like how they really gave their character's times to breathe. that relationship really blossomed over the film. It wasn't rushed. It didn't happen right away. Like you could tell there was tension immediately, romantic tension right away just from,
Starting point is 00:03:35 you know, in terms of attraction. But again, I like that they took their time with that relationship. And, you know, he's very guarded, especially after we learned his back story a little bit
Starting point is 00:03:46 why he's just so guarded in general. Right. But I liked also, too, again, that twist with learning his backstory really quickly. Yeah. I like, too, that he saw so many qualities in herself,
Starting point is 00:03:57 that he, you know, encompassed in himself. But I just thought, too, there was a dynamic and a, and there was a lot of dramatic tension as well in the relationship. And I found that's why I was so invested in those two. Yeah. And I just like, too, that she never shied away from anything. She was so courageous. And I just, like, those are my favorite types of characters.
Starting point is 00:04:17 Yeah, for sure. They jump at whatever, you know, so courageous. And it doesn't matter what's going on. Like, they're going to jump in there. And I just really appreciated her character so much. so much up. I also love that it wasn't corny. They set up with them in a lot of movies. When a guy first meets girl, we kind of know that there's a romantic interest. Like with the hand on the hip, that could have been shot and the vibe and the tone of this movie could have been done where it's like,
Starting point is 00:04:43 it's corny. They didn't do that. They gave us that vibe where it's like, that feels like a love interest because of the camera street, because this was cast so well. And I truly think like with Neil Berger, I'm like, I'll watch all of his films. Why? Because the actors, were all very believable and it was done with the tone of like believability. It wasn't like, even in the sarcastic and the comedy
Starting point is 00:05:04 like Miles Teller is like, take it off, put it back on. It wasn't like, take it off, put it back on. Like it could be. Like there's a tone in this movie from beginning to end that really feeds into the believability of it.
Starting point is 00:05:18 And I really think in with the factions is an overall metaphor for higher class and lower class. And they're like, abdigation threatens all of us. Why? Because they're helping human nature. Humans in general. Higher class doesn't really want to give up all of their money and their high class stuff to help like the lower class to become, right? They still want to be, not all of them, but you get how it's like they're in our system just here. There's a difference in class. And most of the time high class
Starting point is 00:05:53 wants it to stay. They want to stay up here and they don't really care about down here, which is why I think it's a great metaphor of them going, we're going to send these people in to take care, just basically wipe out the people who want to help, who want to help human nature and help humans in general, which I thought was a really good metaphor just for like the world. I know we're not all like that, but that was like that. And this movie was smart. I love the script. I love the way that it was shot. And I love that they didn't miss a beat. So whoever the director, obviously, Neil Berger probably made a ton of choices and the executive producer. But sometimes when there's other producers involved in a big budget movie, they get in
Starting point is 00:06:40 with their like thoughts and they screw it up maybe. And in this, I thought it was done really, really smartly. All the characters were not idiots and the ones that were was like, oh, sure, Miles Teller, but he kind of redeemed himself. And I think this is a book, right? Is this a book? It did say it was a book. So I think in me not reading the book that this was shot really well. I felt like, oh, this must be a book from the second she walked in to make her choice in that big coliseum and all the bowls were there and there was one that was smoking. They took their time on those shots like I felt like this is how it would feel maybe if I was reading it. They would be giving us a sense of the environment, maybe how she felt, how the air felt
Starting point is 00:07:28 in that room of a big choice. And they continue to take their time on big choices like that and in regards to chemistry with characters. So eventually once they kissed, I didn't think that it was, I wasn't like, oh God, duh, they're going to kiss here. I was like, sure, we felt it coming, but it didn't feel put on. And I love that. I really, really enjoyed this movie, like, I'm going to all watch all of them. Oh, yeah, for sure. No, I definitely want to see the next one. I also thought Kate Winslet again, I've only seen a few of her films, Titanic and a couple others, but I thought she did a really good job. Just encompassing this villain. And I think the best type of villains are ones you understand their motivation, not ones you agree with, understand their
Starting point is 00:08:10 motivation. And also ones who, like, in their sick, twisted minds, they think they're doing the right thing. Yeah. You know, she thought human nature in itself was evil and she thought that the stiffs, you know, helping people out was obviously wrong and just human nature in itself evil and was wrong and was just trying to wipe that out. So, but I thought she can't, like how her character came across, like I understood her character.
Starting point is 00:08:36 I didn't agree at all with her, but also too, she came across as a major threat, not from a physical perspective, but just in every other sense. And I thought she just delivered a very, because again, I'm just used to more seeing her in more heroic type of character roles like as, like I said, from Titanic and all that. But I thought she did a good job playing a villain. So it showed me that she's got, clearly got range. She's in the Academy Award winning actress and all. But it was definitely different seeing her in that. What did you think of her? Yeah. I thought it was great. I mean, I am a huge fan, like I said, during this reaction of mayor of Easttown. And she does a phenomenal job in that. And she goes through a lot of range of emotions. also, Kate Winslet, we get it. She's super, super talented. In this specifically, I did agree. Like, I think it goes a lot with the direction of, like, Neil Berger, I will not forget
Starting point is 00:09:24 your name now because I love the way you directed this and I love the way you directed the actors. I did not think that one person out of this, whether it was a small role or even a stunt person, was fake to me. I believed all of it. And I really appreciate that in a movie. And obviously, Kate Winslet did a phenomenal. job and I think it does come down to hiring very talented people and a mix of the direction
Starting point is 00:09:49 and the way that this is shot and they did all around the way that the warm light is is in the beginning of like the sunset and it's warm and then we switch to those neon colors when she chooses her path with Dauntless and then it gets kind of dark and hazy when it gets scary for her kind of like her first leap in the Ferris wheel right we're like oh it's kind of dark and there's this moment where she has to find the light and she does. And that was really rewarding for us. I mean, I don't, I do it a, I like to do it a lot, but like cheering in a movie, we cheered a bunch. Oh, yeah. No, for sure. It was definitely a very rewarding experience. I also, too, I loved, in terms of characters and obviously performances, I loved her parents
Starting point is 00:10:34 as well. Yes. Obviously, it's a very big deal when, you know, family members leave the faction, but that her parents you can tell how charismatic and how much they embraced and still cared about their kid and also too again we talked a little bit about that twist with Ashley Judd she was a dauntless so she knew what her daughter was going through and then also too she knew
Starting point is 00:10:52 like had a feeling her child was a divergent so like she was so protective over there over her and then also the sacrifice both her parents made and also too like we talked about the mental fortitude of Trist that she had to go through like so many different array of things that she had to go through throughout the film. I mean, she had to like pretend that she wasn't a divergent through those mental tests,
Starting point is 00:11:17 the challenges, you know, when she was doing dauntless. And then within an hour, both her parents were wiped out while she's fighting her friend. I mean, there were so many obstacles that this character had to go through. That's why I was like, I'm just so amazed and so immersed through this character and living vicariously. And just like, this is why I'm invested in strong characters. like this and she gave such an incredible performance and also too when scenes like she had to show her acting range like when her parents were uh you know were killed like she was dying yeah like that was a great job amazing performance she gave i really loved her character so much in this and
Starting point is 00:11:52 it looks like there might be two films oh my god i thought there was a or two more films rather you guys better comment the crap out of this so we can watch all of them i really do want to say i don't know if neal again this is just me projecting saying this i don't know if neil berger I'll be a little sad if he's not because I really enjoyed this but even if it's a different director I want to give him all a chance. Yeah, with the way it ended
Starting point is 00:12:14 and I was like, damn it. And there was, I will say this, we talked about they took their time like building up the world, setting up the world, I was like, how is this going?
Starting point is 00:12:23 I did know there was a sequel because at the beginning we kind of saw a picture when we were setting up the film but I was like, how are we going to end this in a way that's still going to feel satisfying and still feel like
Starting point is 00:12:33 contained it as a film itself. Right. Without it feeling like, oh, I have to see the next one, which I still feel, but I'm like, this is still a complete story in itself. Citizens of the Reject Nation, or should I say Royal Reject, because that is who we call those who check out our RR Apparel at RejectNation Shop.com. We come out with new designs every month or every two months. It is personally my favorite way you can support the channel. Reason being is because we are involved with every one of the exclusive RR designs that are up at the shop.
Starting point is 00:13:05 Every month that's been growing every month, we are getting more and more royal rejects. And I really love to hear how people are finding the shirts to not just be cool looking, but also fit nicely and feel comfortable. I cared about that more than anything else. I'm a hairy guy, so I'm really in like sensitive of the fabric. We got a bunch of designs already, such as our Super Marvel bro shirt. My sister actually designed this one, Deadpool Wolverine inspired, my personal favorite one. But then we also got our number one bestseller, the Last Daddy T-shirt, which has Pedro Pascal from The Last of Us inspired, carrying baby growth. We have Loki's Glorious Balloon.
Starting point is 00:13:37 We also have our Doctor Who shirt, which is full of a bunch of classic Doctor Who quotes on the Tartists. We have Space Babies of the Galaxy. We got ourselves some Star Wars-inspired shirts. We got a boys-inspired shirt. And we have a House of the Dragon one as well, pointing those out because obviously we have new seasons of those shows coming up. And then, of course, you got a bunch of other designs as well, like our Batverse one, who influences the influencers, another Last of Us inspired t-shirt. And of course, you know, the classic Reject Symbolism T-shirts as well.
Starting point is 00:14:09 Either one is an amazing way to support the channel. And like I said, you get to look good while doing it. So thank you guys so much. Do consider going to Rejectnation Shop.com. And also, tag us on social media. If you end up buying a shirt, please tag us. We'd love to see it when people do end up buying the shirts. Thank you, Royal Rejects.
Starting point is 00:14:26 See you guys soon. Yeah, I do agree. It is open-ended. It does make me want to watch the next one. Yeah. I also agree with you about, like, you know, normally I would give crap to movies that are not directed very well when they don't give us enough time at the top with a daughter and the parents. So when the parents die, we don't end up caring. In this, we cared. And we didn't get a ton of time with the parents. But the way that this was directed and just even that beginning shot of like she feels safe with her mom, her mom, you know, was cutting her hair. It's like a very intimate thing. And then when they sit down with the family and all it took was really those hugs of like, we love you either way. And then we know, like, at the end, when when dad grabs that gun, I knew, like, of course, he's going to go out and sacrifice himself.
Starting point is 00:15:11 And we felt that. And normally, with other movies, if they don't put in a lot of time, I don't really feel it. But they did a great job. Somehow they got us to feel it all. That's a great point. I mean, it's tough in general just to make you feel, but the limited amount of screen time that we had with those characters to still make us feel that much. And you could tell even, too, when she was picking the faction, like. It was a tough choice for her.
Starting point is 00:15:36 She didn't want to leave her parents. So, again, credit to Shailene Woodley, like a very provocative, embracing performance and just her facial emoting expressions. Great job. Yeah, again, I'd only seen her in the O.C. I'm actually watching this film. I'm like, damn, I'm so sad.
Starting point is 00:15:54 We didn't get to see her as Mary Jane Watson and Amazing Spider-Man, too. There is no... I mean, seeing her chemistry with four in this, I'm like, her and Andrew Garfield would. And I'm sorry, I know this is not an amazing Spider-Man. man video or anything but I no doubt in my mind she would have been a damn good Mary Jane Watson and her and Andrew Garfield would have had some some good chemistry so yeah that really
Starting point is 00:16:14 makes me sad and I believe this was the same year that came out because this was 2014 well she was busy on this then no no no I know but her her whole thing was she filmed scenes for that movie it was completely cut out it just got cut out interesting so I didn't know that but also too I really like the score in this with Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL I I know that they, two years after this did Batman v. Superman, so obviously there was not on this film. They had never worked together, I don't think before, but obviously they had some chemistry in terms of having rapport
Starting point is 00:16:46 and working together in Batman v. Superman, but I thought they did a great job. Just, you know, I just like bringing the emotion on the sad scenes and then on the action bombastic scenes. I'm like, holy crap, this is awesome. I agree. But, yeah, and also to the cinematography, like you mentioned, the sweeping wide shots of the.
Starting point is 00:17:04 the city in Chicago when they were up on the view. And then we were going on that crazy bunch of the zip line. Oh my goodness. Oh, my God. Like such exhilarating shots where I was like, I'm on the edge of my seat right now. But everything they hit out of the park from the lighting to the music to the shots. They made us feel like we were actually there. And that's a hard thing to do.
Starting point is 00:17:26 There's a lot of directors and films that try to accomplish that. And they don't get as far as this one got. Yeah. And I mean, I'm like 10 out of 10 put like. Please, if you ever make another one, put me in the movie. Right. God, I would die to be in one of these movies that is like a great. It's such a great film.
Starting point is 00:17:43 I'm in love with it. I'm so happy I got to watch it. And the most important thing, she picked up the weapons. Thank you. Territory approves. It's like, oh my goodness. You guys know I'm constantly here is yelling at the screen, like pick up that weapon. And they did it consistently throughout this film, which is.
Starting point is 00:17:58 It's like they were hearing us. I appreciate. And that's why this movie has five stars. Yes. Like I would make five-star movies, too. Just give me a budget, y'all. Give me some money and let me go to town on it. Or just let me be in your phones.
Starting point is 00:18:12 I'm going to read off some fun little movie trivia facts for you. We'll do a few for you guys. He's a fact guy. Let him go with it. All right, let's see. So the sound that Peter, Miles Teller character, makes when Triss punches him in the throat is genuine. Woodley didn't want to hurt Teller, so she was being timid. As filming continued, Teller and Woodley got more aggressive.
Starting point is 00:18:32 and during one take, Woodley actually hit him in the throat, which Teller was not expecting. This is the take that you saw in the film. Damn, method acting at its finest. Oh, my goodness. So now whenever I rewatch it, I'll know when she hit him in the throat. That's real. Oh, my goodness.
Starting point is 00:18:48 I wonder if he was, like, mad at her after? I'm sure, like, he's like, dear. We didn't need to make that part. Don't hit me, please. Okay, you get two more facts. Go. Okay. Kate Winslet was five months pregnant during filming,
Starting point is 00:19:00 despite the fact she was only on set for four weeks. It reached the point where her pregnancy was evident. She was shot above the waist or was directed to carry folders, files, and iPads. To cover it up. That makes sense because there were a lot of scenes where she wasn't doing really many physical things. Absolutely. And again, I did notice there were a lot of shots where it was more, you know, waist up. Love it.
Starting point is 00:19:23 Yeah, makes sense. Okay. Oh, all right. This is a long one, but this will be the last one. Okay. So Miles Teller originally auditioned for the role of four, but was told that he wasn't going to be getting the role. Months later, the producers watched The Spectacular Now,
Starting point is 00:19:41 which came out a year before, 2013, and were so impressed that they called Teller and offered him the role of Eric, who's supposed to be at odds and intimidating towards the character four. Teller turned it down because he felt that he wouldn't be able to pull off being intimidating towards Theo James. He was then offered the role of Peter, which he accepted after his friend and co-star Shailene Woodley
Starting point is 00:20:02 sent him a text asking him to accept the role so that they could work together. Oh, that's so cute. And she wanted to punch him in the throat. I love that. I love that their best buddies. Like, that's all, that's me 100%. Like when I make short films, as you guys know,
Starting point is 00:20:16 I try to cast all my friends, obviously. I love that they work together, which makes it easier that like if she punched him in the throat, it's like, you're still my friend. You're still my friend. I love that, Tara said that because now it just makes me think she's like the Adam Sand. of her group. She's like, I got to bring all my friends. I do. I love that. I do. If you are in film,
Starting point is 00:20:35 if you're, if you're an actor, I would, I want to cast you if you fit in the role. Um, I just want to make films with my friends. You guys, it's all I want to do. It makes for a more fun environment. You know, if there is tension, it's like, I know where you live. I know your number. So, don't mess with me. And if you're a filmmaker out there or even in Kaz or just anything, like whatever, comment, tag me. Like, let's build a system of a community. of people who love film, but also make films, especially if you're here in Los Angeles. I can vouch for Tara.
Starting point is 00:21:05 You will have so much fun on your set if he's there. Just saying, no bias aside, not because she's my friend or anything, but you will have a great time on set if she's there. I love that you just said that. And you will get a great actress as well. So you get in all the positives. That means the world to me.
Starting point is 00:21:19 Do you have any last thoughts? Just, I, again, I just really appreciate it just encompassing this world. And it's also scary at times as well. but Shailene Woodley loved her performance in the film and her character
Starting point is 00:21:31 and again the chemistry just the film was just amazing in itself and I really want to see the sequel so guys please please please give lots of likes share the video
Starting point is 00:21:40 make sure you write in the comment let comments rather let Greg and John know that you want to see Tara and I do at least the second one if not the third one as well I'd love to do the whole series
Starting point is 00:21:49 but at least tell them you want to see the second one tweet this reaction shout about it on Instagram stories do it on threads I'm all over at Tara Erickson you know where he's at we're all over the place but please tag share we love you guys so much thank you for joining us
