Thank you to Liquid IV for sponsoring this video.
Al-on-Z-Reject Nation, we are back for Doctor Who.
I am so looking forward to this for reasons I want to explain in just a second.
John, how are you?
Ah, my excitement is bigger on the inside.
Gee, I'm ready for a new series of Who.
Nicely done.
There's a hole in my pants I just noticed.
Ladies and gentlemen, got to go to the premiere of Dr. Who.
had an opportunity to interview the 15th Doctor Chutigatwa and our newest companion, Ruby Sunday, Mill Gibson, had like a second with Russell T. Davies.
I did a video on our Patreon. Reason being is because we started Modern Who over at our patrons, so the reaction highlights and the watchalongs all are.
When the 14th Doctor debut, they were caught up, so we were like, let's start putting them up on YouTube.
I did a very long video explaining a lot of things, and then I ended up being very emotional for our Patreon.
and for a big sense of gratitude.
In short, I know I wouldn't have been at that carpet
if it wasn't for all of you guys.
I was feeling an overwhelming sense of gratitude moments beforehand,
feeling grateful right now.
So I'm more excited than ever to be diving in to Doctor Who once again with all of you.
So thank you all very much.
And I don't know if this video is going up before the interview.
If it's up, go watch it.
Please, please go watch it.
I was incredibly nervous, but nervous.
excited and if it's not up keep a look out for it in the meantime take your sonic
screwdriver to that like button be sure to subscribe click that notification bell
because we got to get to the next episode as well also all the other episodes that are
coming up here on the channel thank you to prepper for editing down these highlights
and thanks again to all of you guys people started us off on our journey with doctor
who are super sexy rejects over there you get the full-lane thrash and watch along
so you sync up with your own copy of dr who so it's like john and i are in the room
with you guys watching the entirety and we also cover several things exclusive with
highlights and watch alongs included it's an absolutely fantastic way to support the channel
i'm feeling really grateful right now so i'm really looking forward to watching this and i'm glad
we could continue this journey together john we had the opportunity to actually go watch it at the
theater these episodes and uh look to john and i just flat out told him like we can't do that we can't
yeah reason being is because i know that we wouldn't be able to be there if you guys weren't
there watching our reactions i would be thinking of this instead yeah i would feel yeah i would feel
Like, as cool as it is to be in the room with everybody, I would feel bummed, not being here.
We shared the exact same thought.
It really wasn't even a question.
The whole thing that got us here was doing the reactions.
And frankly, it just wouldn't be a genuine reaction if we just watch in the theater, then come and record.
Like, it would be false.
So we wanted to keep it authentic.
We're happy to.
We're enthusiastic to.
All right.
Well, let's get into it, guys.
My favorite thing about our new doctor is the fashion.
Of course.
The fashion.
That zip jumper or whatever you call that.
It's groovy.
John Fashion.
I like the way his pants had those little like wingy.
I'm trying to set you up.
Oh.
Of course.
Of course.
The fashion.
Named for this very t-shirt was this episode.
And it can only be found at our space station, Rejectnation Shop.
Tyro Magnet.
Rejectionshop.com.
Rejectionation.
Shop.com.
Oh, speaking of fashion, that's, that's a Doctor Who specific t-shirt.
Ward, sweating my balls off yesterday and it.
Who designed that?
Wow.
Did they, and did they take note?
They did.
They did.
That's why you should get one.
It's Dr. Hooscher full of much Doctor Who coats.
My favorite doctor who shirt and wore it for him.
That's pretty great.
Millie Gibson rubbed her face all my chest.
Let me absorb all these quotes.
in my shirt.
Physically absorb them.
Anyhow.
All right.
We got our first episode down
of the newest season.
It's a weird one.
We don't want to take in.
If you're listening to us on Apple and Spotify,
that's where we just watched a Doctor Who.
And John, please,
while my 72 hours
sleeped in my brain
tried to process this
wacky, wild, weird,
sensational episode
first thoughts
first thoughts
I enjoyed this
quite a bit
I think it definitely
when you do not enjoy something
quite a bit
hang on
when you not like something
quite a bit
I'm going to choose a different phrasing
quite a bit
I mean there was much fun
to be had in this episode
and I think this episode
was there
was there
no
it was a slog
oh now you're just
now you're just complying
grow a back
doctor who cares
All right, I'm going flip-flopping back to my original stance.
It was pretty fun.
But I feel like this embodies a lot of things about a classic Doctor Who episode,
many for better and some for not as better.
But, you know, I think this episode had a choice to make
between two specific leanings in terms of a Doctor Who story
and being that this is a soft reboot, I guess we'll call it.
It's a new series one.
It's never felt more like a soft reboot than that.
Yes, agreed. Even in the Whittaker phase,
it still felt like a kind of continuation.
And this is a continuation, but also it's new.
So I feel like they chose probably wisely in the long run
to reintroduce everybody and to prioritize,
or reintroduce everybody to the basic rules, the basic motifs,
and then prioritize getting to really flesh out
and know the dynamic between the doctor and Ruby.
At least, you know, for anybody who's,
forgotten in the gap or whatever else
we're here for episode one
ostensibly. Yes we are.
So I feel like it prioritized those things
over some of its more
subtextual elements
that Doctor Who is often want
to explore. I
enjoyed the way that
I mean, you know, to me this is in the
tradition of a lot of the more whimsical
and bouncy Doctor Who episodes
with a little bit of that darkness lurking
underneath and certainly setting up what's the big
question mark for the whole season going to be.
Yeah. So I thought it served a lot of those functions nicely, and it had a lot of nice mood.
And it certainly, again, was kind of a ride in a fun way.
But there are things about it that, again, I think it chooses to not spend as much time extrapolating upon so that we can get this initial adventure, again, not including the Christmas special with the two of them, out of the way.
So I think there are things that this episode could have done, and I think there are things that wrap up in a very sort of like.
I, you know, if you had 15 more minutes, you know, we could have maybe done this fully, but, you know, we got a, we only got 45 minutes, we got to wrap it up.
But for all those things, I had a good time.
I'm optimistic for the season, and I just love the two, the chemistry of Shutekega and Millie Gibson, I think is great.
Yeah.
What did you think, what did you think?
Lay your criticisms at my feet.
I feel like if Church on Ruby Road,
wasn't as strong as it was, I would be a little concerned about the season to come.
Because I think Church on Ruby Rove is a surprisingly excellent introduction of the doctor.
Because it is kind of interesting.
The amount of reintroducing, one would argue that, oh, it's because there's a companion.
And I'm like, well, they're kind of going on a little bit more of the extra mile here with the explanation,
where it seems like they're making sure to throw in a lot more information than usual.
So I started getting like producer brain going when I was watching it.
Okay, so was the specials intended to re-instill faith with current viewers,
but also allow for an opportunity to gather new viewers?
It seemed like that's what the intent was.
And then thinking about the transition from classic who to modern who,
there's a very long gap.
So you need that.
Whereas here, it's just the next season to me.
So I don't really feel like I need as much of that.
And, you know, with every new companion, you have to reintroduce some of the familiar elements.
Bigger on the inside, you know, some of the explanation shit, right?
Some of those things are things you look forward to every time.
Whereas, yeah, they go the extra step to be on that thing.
That was worth it.
I was worth it.
That's why I'm your companion.
That's why you're my companion.
I helped this episode.
I'm right.
You're right.
Or Dan.
Dan kind of helps.
Some of the times he's done, you know, the charming guy from the, who gives all the tours.
Oh, he's like short-lived?
Yeah, very short-lived in some of the Whitaker episodes.
Yeah, we referenced the Whitaker season the most.
Yes, we do.
The recency by us, baby.
That's what everyone looks the most of the most of the Whitaker era.
And so, I like Whitaker.
But the, this episode,
a lot of the strengths are still there.
Like when we're looking at strengths,
I really still enjoy Shutigawa a lot.
I feel like there's a very larger than life personality
with it feeling like a new doctor
with a fresher perspective.
You know, this is the by-generation era.
And he's more of a clean slate.
So it allows for this kind of doctor to receive more, you know,
to have a lot more warmth and heart and humor.
and I really feel like him
and Millie Gibson
they bounce off each other
really well. There's a lot of this rhythm
that, sure, can you make up for some
of it in editing? I'm like, no, there's a lot of this
where it seems like this is how they
bounce off each other with the rhythm and their
lines. So I feel like they really
bring out a lot of great energy within
each other. So that's the main
solidifying groundwork that
for Doctor Who, that is an
essential ingredient, right? The doctor and the
companion. So I feel like that
element is still very
solid and
the same people who ran this episode
behind the scenes are the same people
who ran the four part special
while I know for some people
there's a bit of a mixed bag
I really enjoyed
a lot of those specials
I really love
it was a wild blue yonder
which feels like it's
going to be very important
for the foreseeable season
and I really enjoy
a church on Ruby Road a lot
and I like
of the old Patrick Harris episode
it was the first episode
I was like
some part
I still enjoy it
I had a lot more
the hell I'm talking about
I thought that was a lot
like I'm critical
like I had some criticism
but I really enjoyed it a lot
and this one
there's sections
about this concept
that I think are
appealing
and I don't subscribe
to this whole rhetoric
that I see online
it seems like the way
to really get the viewership
on doctor who is to shit on it right that seems like that's the way you if you want to get them clicks
you know say all the same rage bait you know angry stuff woke you know whatever the hell you want to
say about it isolate moments or isolate uh quotes from actors and not get full context you know
to drive home that narrative here and this one was the it felt the most like i was watching a
Disney Plus thing
the first time
out of the five
out of the five
that I'm including
the four part special
this one like
this one feels the most
like a Disney plus thing
to me
and maybe that's something
to do with the infancy
maybe that's something
to do with the babies
themselves
and the baby
farting spaceship
at the end
big farting spaceship
a lot of the juvenile
esk humor
but then I go back
to other episodes
of Doctor Who
that certainly
had that same effect
on me before Disney
Plus was a part
of the game
here of a doctor
who this is not
the first time that's not like doctor who has never been intended for kids to be able to access
it at any point yeah absolutely no 100% you want to act like this is the first time doctor who's
ever done someone it's not you know and news flash star wars and comic books are also partly for
kids normally this side of doctor this voice of it is the side that sometimes i can have as a viewer
jiving with the most, you know, finding my flow with the kind of episode itself, because
you got stuff where it seems that they're really going for darkness, but then you got something
that's like super kiddish. It's so, like, so kiddish. And there were parts tonality-wise
that I did not feel were ultimately meshing. And it didn't dawn on me until late into the
episode. It was when I was looking at the baby talking, one of the babies, and I realized it's hard to
connect with this plot for me
because I'm
so aware of this
uncanny valley AI
mouth thing. I don't know what effect it is
right. That it
shoot baby is hard. Well it's like I'm aware
it's a baby then you're then you're like
they obviously got real babies and then you're
you're superimposing some type of I don't know
VFX but they're doing something with the mouth to
make it move and there's
there's end of it's like it's dead eye baby
so not like it's real baby
with its eyes
but the mouth is dead
but the baby's emotions
are not going with
the voice like their eyes that they want
it so I have like no actual
emotional connection
to any of these moments
because I'm really kept at a distance
with the artifice of what I'm watching
and that is what I think kept me
at a distance of being able to just kind of get
to kind of surrender to the mad capness
of this episode
So then I just kind of was aware of everything.
And it was out of the five episodes, I'm including the specials, this is the one I just could, I had a hard time getting lost it because I was so aware of kind of everything, you know?
Yeah.
And that to me is, was the hindrance that I had of like given this episode a high rating be because, yeah, it's like they were trying to do a lot in here.
I like the setups for the futures.
That's probably my favorite part, honestly, is the future setup stuff with Ruby.
You know, like, Clara is like my favorite companion of the past.
No, it's not a popular opinion, but she's not my personal favorite companion.
Dan, for Dan and Ryan.
I love Claire a lot, and I remember being really hooked into the, who is she?
What is she?
Why is she?
You know, and they're doing something like that kind of with Ruby Sunday here of like, what exactly are you?
and how are you affecting time and whatnot in the universe?
Why are you connecting so much?
Yeah, so I love those qualities.
So there's a lot of the strengths that are carrying over from church and Ruby Road are still here.
And it's just kind of the pacing and the tonal conflict stuff.
Like when it came time to like snot monster, like, oh, we got to say.
I'm like, I get it because you're the doctor and that's what you do.
But at the same time, I'm like, I don't really care about it.
honestly like i i don't really i don't feel the the point is to be in the doctor's shoes or
because everyone doctor and ruby are both like no i'm sorry as you must i'm like really i don't really
feel that right now reject nation i am here to talk to you today about something that i value very
much and i hope you will learn to value it too and if you already do then i got an amazing
recommendation for all of you. Now, many of you guys have been so kind to notice that Sir Gregory
over here has been getting a little bit of a better shape as a late in the past year or so. I mean,
I'm just looking. Everybody loves the guy who flexes on camera. No one finds that annoying or like
they're trying to get attention. I'm only doing it to make a point that I've been taking
health and fitness quite serious, mainly because I really like to feel more energetic in a more
natural way, helps me focus. I just feel better overall. And one thing I've really noticed that
is very, very important to me is proper hydration. Sometimes you might just casually see me
sipping on one of these, no big deal. But sometimes I don't want to just like fill my body up with
so much water before getting on camera and getting some of that water bloat or whatever that
might occur. And it's also important to get electrolytes after sweating a bunch because if there's
one thing I notice is that after I exercise, do I feel a high from it?
Absolutely. But if I don't replenish my body properly afterwards, I slowly get drained.
I feel more foggy-minded. I feel more fatigue. And that's why this is something I've already
been using and I am so happy to be partnered with them. It is liquid IV. I've only got
three packets left. I need to order more. And what's so great about it is that after using
these, I always feel way more refreshed. I feel like I feel more focused. Sometimes I might get
a little bit of a head pain. It helps relieve with a lot of that. And it's more than just working out.
Sometimes you might just be really tired or have an exhaustive day.
Like, for example, sometimes we're working all day.
Then we got to shoot a show at midnight or something like that.
And I need energy.
I need to be live on camera.
And I usually take a hydration formula.
And liquid IV is a very, very reliable one.
So while drinking water is, of course, very important,
liquid IV can provide the same hydration as drinking two to three bottles of water.
That's like efficient.
They, of course, packed with a lot of essential vitamins.
They're vegan, soy-free, gluten-free, dairy-free.
You can customize the water amount to your taste.
They have a lot of options, and the reason I love this one is because throughout the week,
I usually have a no-sugar-added diet.
And this one right here, it's sugar-free.
So it's perfect for me.
So yes, it's great for post-night recovery, traveling, maybe having a big night out after, you know,
so if you want to improve your endurance, you want to improve your overall well-being, you want to be hydrated.
It is extremely important to vitality.
So to boost your hydration and also boost support for the channel.
love to stay sponsored with these guys, considering that we do use these products and we really
voucher them, and really do think you would benefit from them. You can go to liquid iv.com and use
promo code rejects. Once again, that's liquidiv.com promo code rejects. Remember, it's not a real
IV, but it sure feels like it. That's comedy gold. Yeah, I feel like a lot of the themes and a lot
of the ideas driving the episode
are what get really muddy.
And like I feel
like a lot of my favorite episodes
are probably ones that have some kind of
neatly arranged allegory. And here it's
like you meet the space station
under these terms of like, okay, so they're
farming babies. Why? And then you have this
whole sub-detail about
like, oh, whoever runs the show
here decided it's illegal to
shut down the baby station. So I'm like, are we doing
a pro-choice pro-life allegory? Which
is interesting, certainly. And then
we have the bogeyman, you know, and the contrast of like, oh, here's what we associate
with cute, perfect babies, but the same machine birthed this monstrosity.
But, you know, okay, so maybe this is a comment on, like, birth defects or other things.
And, like, within that, I can see the road to the conclusion.
But, yeah, as it's presented here, the conclusion feels sort of like, well, it's alive.
Is this like an AI thing?
Like, it's that consciousness.
It's like, what is this thing?
Does it have consciousness?
does it deserve to live on it's the last of its kind
and I like they draw that parallel with the doctor
and he's I'm the last of my kind
and my people were genocided out of existence
but it's not exactly the same thing there either
at least on the beat that they bother to flash back to
when he's talking about the genocide of his people
and all that stuff and they apply it to that beat
and I'm like I don't really feel that I feel the last of your
or only one of your kind thing and then you have
whatever her name was Nan
who is
Jocelyn.
Jocelyn, there you go.
Pay attention to the show.
Jenson or whatever.
Jocelyn.
And with her, like, you have this turn
where she's...
No, no, wait, no.
Dreadlock's lady.
Where she's, you know,
ejecting it out of the airlock.
And again, these are all things that I bet
like an hour-long episode
could have patched up, but it's like,
okay, so she's taking a somewhat darker turn,
but it's for an understandable reason.
and then we get to the end.
And then we get to the end and she's fine
and it's just kind of like,
ah, you know, she was just acting out of instinct
and trying to protect you guys
and then made the wrong choice there.
And then I found myself wondering, actually.
I mean, like the doctor and Ruby
are certainly simpatico in so many ways.
But I also was like,
this seems like a moment where there would be
maybe at least a beat of conflict with Ruby
because, like, I get that a companion
probably just intrinsically trust the doctor.
But at the same time, I feel like there would be a debate around like,
do we need to go to all this trouble to save the booger creature?
You know, it's just something.
I feel like any number of these details better explored could have like clinched the ending
instead of feeling like, well, this is what the, like you said,
this is what the doctor does, you know,
has seized the empathy for the thing that didn't ask to be created that was created anyway.
And then, you know, it's a literal booger thing.
It's like the argument kept coming back to,
like I feel like we're raising questions right now
and debates that perhaps are
more interesting on a selfish level
to talk about with you rather than what the episode
was conversing with me about.
Well, what's what I'm saying is it just sets these things up
and doesn't ever freely follow any of those threads.
Yeah, because there was like a comment early on
I saw you like the way you reacted.
I'm like, oh yeah, that's good.
What the hell was that point that she, like they were talking about
how they create the huge.
humans and then when they're here
then they don't do anything to help them out
something along those lines. Yeah, it's that we
have to have these babies born. Yeah,
it's like, no, you cannot, you know,
kill babies. Stop the baby making machine.
You just got to keep them coming. Yeah, yeah.
But once they're out here, we're just going to abandon them
and it's up to you to figure. We're not going to try
out. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, which, you know,
what, you know, what they're talking about there again.
So it's like there. So,
that element, for sure.
And this
debate about life with the bogey man creature was the part i was like i feel like there needs more
conversation here for sure because it kept going back to it's the last of its kind so i was like okay
so there was more of them would it be okay to kill this thing yeah i thought it was all yeah because
this thing just honestly seems like it's just intent on it's evil right it's just the whole thing is to
it's still fear like it's yeah it's it's still not like a good thing to have around so i was just
kind of confused and then
when doctor saves it
like oh how did he just
got out of the room because the thing was like tired and a little
snot drain from like losing some
particles of itself yeah is that what was that what
happened though yeah a little weakened
by being depleted I suppose
okay
I don't know but it's murky there
we've seen way worse doctor who
that's the thing and I feel like all
of these gripes
partly to me my read
on this is like again they prioritize
is like, okay, we need to refresh the people who weren't here.
Because the specials seem like a true, like,
a way station of sorts where it's like, okay,
we're bringing the previous era to a close
that includes the beginning of the new era,
but some people might not have watched any of that stuff.
So here is your introduction to, like, the new era through this.
And I feel like that's the priority they took.
Well, usually, a Christmas special,
there's two kinds of Christmas specials.
The Christmas special that is introducing a new,
doctor and headland has our lead episode the first lead episode and then there's the christmas
special that's already our doctor now it's a christian actual just christmas special episode just
another episode essentially you know and uh so to me i'm like church on ruby road it's the real first
episode sure right yeah and so yeah i mean overall uh i thought this one's okay i'm not i'm not
i'm obviously not big on his episode like i'm not i i didn't i'm not particularly fond of this one
sure um and i get what you mean about it's to me it's
or the second episode than of the Chutea Gatla era,
which in the first episode, Churchill, I pretty much loved his now.
And I get what you mean about the notice, I guess in conclusion,
it's the last thing you made me think of was like with the babies.
It was one of those things where I was trying to lose myself into it.
And I was like, I appreciate that it's always hard to do baby characters
that are in any way sentient or intelligent.
And I appreciate that they like clearly worked with what they got
and use the kids' natural, you know, interactions.
They've got better babies.
Get the more dedicated babies to their craft, okay?
Like, I found myself appreciating the ways they would use the natural mannerisms of the kids in unison with what they were doing.
But then, yeah, it's like the effect is so strange.
But then you have the booger monster creature, the bogey man, who does look like a pretty convincing guy in a suit.
So, yeah, like, it's an interesting swing.
and I appreciate the swing
and I appreciate them going for something like
kooky
but yeah
it's not necessarily a fave but it doesn't
really mess up
my optimism
for the just joy
of watching more doctors
absolutely, man
yeah
there's been way worse ones
oh yeah
that's the thing you got to remember is every
that's the thing you got to remember is every
era even your favorite doctor
has had a dud here or there
yeah absolutely yeah i guess the disheartening part is when it's like oh it's the season premiere
that's the hard part sure sure but you know i can't imagine we are like way off the market
no it would be surprised checking with the fandom and oh wow i don't love this this is everyone
loved it the only there's always there's always their section that tends to like every one of it
and it's one of those fandoms where i feel like some people's love comes in the form of a lot of criticism
You know, and the only part of this episode that broached, that breached the line for me where I was like, I don't necessarily need this in Doctor Who, it was the farting spaceship.
I was like the butt, it looks like a butt, you know.
Yeah, space balls, baby.
Shut.
Well, what would you guys think?
What would you rate it out of 1,500?
Put your thoughts down below.
Is it a 1,000?
Is it a 964?
What about a 478?
Or 17 hertz.
Rate it at 17 hertz.
Put your thoughts down below.
And thank you again for having us.
And before we go, let's do a page.
Shout out.
Oh.
I want to shout out Eric Horstman.
Eric says to me.
Oh, he says to me, he says,
that he's just out here protesting and marching,
trying to change the world.
Hell yeah.
He's hoping to getting arrested.
It's on his bucket list.
There's other ways of doing it, man.
You could always, like, you know, kill a human being in the middle of the street.
No, get arrested for good trouble.
Please, Eric.
Or you could just commit a nasty crime.
Good trouble.
The goal, if the outcome is to get arrested, you don't have to do it via trying to fight for something that you believe is right.
You know, you could just commit something wrong.
Become a serial killer, and they'll put your name out there.
And he said that he caught a shot for April, where we, like, made fun of him for not responding us for so long.
Yeah.
And he said he's not M.
You said you're just so famous and busy now.
And I said...
But only you are.
Likewise.
So, yeah, man.
He's asking some questions.
Oh, my God.
Yeah, we never did the Oki-Doki Shirt.
Roxy and Terra React to Haunted Hell House.
That's a great idea.
That is a great idea.
It's his profile pick, Eric Horson.
Yeah, man.
Well, damn.
Well, dude, these are all great.
He sent me a lot of messages.
I just read them out loud, some of them.
and quickly
followed by the thought of
I don't reply to any of that
this is the most
official way to text Eric
I would rather just
if I can answer all my texts
this would be the best way
to do it
listen if you want to chat to me
let me just get on the camera
I was going to go through all them
and here you go
I'm going to blast the video out
I want to make sure everything's being said
and nothing's being miscommunicated
but I'm glad you've been catching our messages
no man
show up in our live streams
If your name shows up, you know I'm going to catch your name.
Oh, hell, you know.
Why would I not catch your name?
Catch everyone's name.
I'll undoubtedly catch your name.
Eric Horsman.
Plus, in the time zone is like the afternoon for you.
But love you, buddy, and I treasure you with all my heart.
And I hope that you actually are being safe and that you do get arrested.
Because that's a good story, man.
You deserve it.
I got arrested once.
What did you do?
