Dude, the realization.
I like that. What's the funny?
I like the intensive focus.
Hi, nice to you, Maddie.
Pleasure.
Hell yeah.
I need to play for 10 minutes.
Dude, I just got like a burst of energy.
Yes.
Motivation to keep going.
I'm Coy Jandro here with The Real Reject,
sitting down with two of my favorite young actors.
I can say confidently two people I knew would be stars
with the first one.
So much.
Crushed here.
Now, since we got a second film, we can start to look at the other big horror icons
and put ourselves in this category.
So growing up, Freddie, Jason, Jigsaw, who was our horror icon before the grabber?
The Leprechaun.
Nice.
Respect.
I love the leprechaun.
It's crazy.
For me, I feel like a great and iconic one has got to be ghost face.
It's such a real, like that could actually happen, so I feel like it's a lot more terrifying.
Halloween kills.
You know, Michael Myers, Jason.
Freddie Krueger is such a terrifying one, though,
because I feel like that is something that can actually linger with you
and actually disturb you when you're sleeping.
The thing is a great.
I think this is a lot about a person, like which things they're scared by.
Like, it's like a horror shock test.
It was kind of a joke.
What did scare me?
No, no, it scared the crap into me.
No, I forgot.
Like, six of them.
It clearly works.
I know.
It's like, clearly it was effective.
That's crazy.
Yeah, no, like, you got us.
Now, you're in such different places this time around,
and I love the growth of these characters.
Often in sequels, it feels like,
the audience expects the same character.
And that's not what happened after trauma
and life happening.
So I'd love to start with you, Madeline.
The way you are so full of resolve and grit
and there's this tenacity to you,
do you think that came from the idea
of your relationship with your mother,
your experiences with Finn,
what did you use an actor to find that resolve and grit?
You know, I felt it was a lot more challenging
to find Gwen this time around
because she is in such a different mental state.
I feel like her grit is probably
one of the things, the other thing is probably her relationship with Finney, but those are the two things
that actually didn't, she didn't lose when going through all these traumatic experiences. And
she's now, you know, getting bullied at school. She feels like more introverted. She feels like an
outcast. No one believes her. No one believes that these dreams were real. Everyone just thinks
she's a freak. So putting myself in her shoes this time around was really interesting because I do
feel like I am quite different from her in the second movie. I'm very social and extroverted.
So we are quite opposite, but I have such a strong relationship with my siblings, and I care for them so deeply.
So once again, like those two things that I feel like Gwen could really rely on.
And I feel like her defiance and her grit is the one thing that really makes her Gwen.
And I feel like the fact that that shows through in the second movie so much is, it's incredible to watch.
And I'm glad that she never lost it.
I love it in the first, and to see the evolution.
It's more powerful in the second one.
Yeah.
as a character.
I feel like she is taking what happened to Finn
and kind of feels like in some way it's her fault
or she could have prevented it.
So I feel like that gave her so much more anger
that all the anger that she has in the second movie for sure.
And Mason, dude, we haven't talked since.
I've seen the film and it is a transformation for you, man.
I've seen you in so much stuff
and there's this beautiful arc to your career,
but this is the biggest left turn I've seen.
There's this stoicism, this brokenness,
and I think that is so much more natural
to the effect of what the first film would do.
Where did you find that?
And what was it like living in that headspace for you
as a person what's cut happened?
I mean, going into it, I didn't know where Finney would be.
And then I read the script and, you know,
I kind of didn't recognize him.
He was lost and it kind of showed that at the end of the first movie
that the grabber won.
He took away what Finney had, which was innocence,
his kind of soul.
And, you know, in this movie he's bottled it all up
and he's very angry and confused.
of it he doesn't want to deal with you know what happened he wants to
forget about it and that's why he's you know out smoking weed at night trying
to forget about everything because all he can see is is him in that basement
you know so sad yeah for me I feel like finding that headspace of trying to
forget like I didn't I didn't watch the first movie again even though I was
I first thought I was like oh yeah let's do that get back in the zone and I just
thought it was a bad idea because Finney doesn't want to remember he doesn't
remember what happened and what happened down to that basement and I think it was it was a lot
of fun for me to find you know who he is now but also glimpses of who he was and Finney's
journey and this is kind of he just wants to find peace and be left alone and just kind of find
the humanity that the grabber took from him but yeah they're both such different performances
and both such elevations it's beautiful to see thank you so much I'm very glad you had that
reaction and speaking of art and experience and evolution to me
one of the great minds about art, not just as an actor,
but like art, Ethan Hawke, the way he waxes poetic about art
is so wonderful.
It's like, I'll read it, like a model long.
Meaning he's a dead poem.
It's beautiful.
What was a moment that really struck you?
What pearl of wisdom or what experience did you glean from like some of the art that is
Ethan Hawke?
He's kind of his professionalism, like the way he works on set.
And when he snaps into character as the gravity, it's, man, it's terrifying to watch.
And, you know, between scenes and stuff, he's just,
just such a chill guy and the way he talks to everybody he's so sweet he holds himself with such
grace I do I feel like actions speak louder than words and so seeing how he treats everyone on
set with such kindness and seeing his approach to the grabber it being such a different character
for him it was just very inspiring and I feel like I learned so much from just listening to
his conversations with Scott and seeing his reactions to things in the movie it was it was very
very interesting and I feel like I learned so much just from being around him he started young
and has obviously had this insane multi-decade career.
But it always feels like he's taking left turns
and he's finding like a new thing to excite him.
I want to know with each of you,
since you started so young,
like I was starting with Madeline,
is there like a biopic you'd love to play?
Is there a superhero?
Is there something that you want, like a North Star?
I mean, for sure, I have a lot of dream roles.
I'd say one of them, I love stunts so much,
so one of them would definitely be to play like Spider-Gwen
or some character like that.
I'm such a big, like, Marvel fan as well.
well and Spider-Man is literally one of my favorite superheroes.
But also just like, I would love to dive more
into coming-of-age stories, and I would love to be able to
play teenagers that other teenagers can relate to,
and things that real teens are struggling with,
like mental health and anxiety and friendships, relationships,
and just family troubles and stuff like that.
So I would love to play more characters
that a lot more people can relate to or see themselves in.
I think that's Spider-Gwen as well as many other things,
It's such a badass!
I love that you're like,
or a thing, like, blah, blah, blah.
I'm like, also SpiderGline.
I'm just going to start the campaign.
Like, number one, go, oh, my, it would be my literal dream.
Like, I would die.
But actually starting to the campaign right now,
let's talk Dick Grayson, man.
Let's talk Nightwing, let's talk Robin.
What is it about the character that you love?
What do you want to bring to him?
What do you think the Venn diagram of you and him is?
Man, I think ever since I was a kid,
it's always been, it's always been Robin.
Like, I've always just, I've read a bunch of comic books about it.
And every, I remember the first thing I watched
was before,
Dick Grayson was under the Red Hood and with Jason Todd and just that storyline
broke my heart as a kid so I started watching so much more stuff getting into the
Lord with Jason Todd and then I started watching the original like Teen Titans
before Teen Titans go and that's what got me into Dick Grayson yeah I think I
was like maybe eight or nine and then I started getting a bunch of the comics my
grandma go to the store bring him back and I just got so in deep with him and it's that
character especially Dick Grayson is a is a character that means so much to me and
if I ever got the chance to...
Childhood dreams coming true.
I see the vision, man.
I wouldn't say it.
Like, I'm too invested in these characters
to say it flippantly.
Yeah, yeah.
Like, I see the vision.
Yeah, I love him so much.
And what are the things you see as, like, his anchors?
If we've got, like, you know, the grit
and we've got, like, what you just experienced,
what do you see as, like, the archetypal things?
What are the immutables to Dick Grayson to you?
I think it's kind of his...
He's a leader.
You know, he's a leader, but he also...
He's kind of what Batman, you know,
always wanted to be.
You know, he's the best Robin,
and he's also the best person to take up the mantle.
And I think out of anybody, there's one thing
in one comic book, the Batman said,
where he was like, you've always,
you would be a better Batman than I was.
It's so, it's such an emotional story.
Like, there's so much emotion to it.
And I think it was kind of a thing where,
when he was Robin, he realized that he can't do this anymore.
And sometimes he doesn't fully agree with what Bruce does,
and he needs to go off and figure out
how he can serve justice the best way he
can and there's a blood haven and that ties beautiful into this and this art and his
character now I know a lot of people probably ask about the cold and the setting
and all those things but I have a different perspective on that please there's a
growth that this movie allows because it's a sequel you actually share one of my
videos talking about the supernatural growth and how since it's anchored in your
story there's that evolution there's also a physical growth to the setting
that I imagine allows you as actors to kind of open up a bit like the basement's
very confiding did you find there were moments when you're in an outdoor setting
when you're playing this as an evolution,
did this setting actually allow you to go bigger
and open up differently?
In ways, I think definitely, you know,
when you feel more immersed,
it obviously helps with you getting into the character
and feeling like you're actually...
It's when you feel that cold.
Yeah, dude, that cold, it gets to you.
But feeling like you're actually experiencing
what a character is going through,
I think is such a dream as an actor
because that's probably the closest
you can get to actually being them.
But also, I feel like in ways
the cold was also suffocating.
Like, it kind of made us feel trick.
because we were so trapped in this camp,
we had no way of escaping.
And snow, honestly, it does that to you.
It makes you feel like you can't get out.
So I feel like that also had so many contributions
to how our performances came across on screen.
I think it helped a lot.
In my first movie, like, it was during COVID,
so I was locked in my hotel room the entire time.
Lots of related to with that one.
The basement in this one, I kind of had the same idea
going into it where it's, you know, just,
I remember the day, of course I had like hand morpies
and stuff, but I kind of wanted to just feel the cold
be in it to, you know, feel what Finney's going through.
And, yeah, I think that helped a lot.
One day in the future, I want to talk spoilers to you guys,
acting with Miguel in a very different way.
I was so impressed, and you both had very different relationships with him.
Definitely.
Incredible work.
And truly, like, I love that first film.
It got me back into horror.
Like, I thought I was a horror fan.
And Black Phone one got me back into the whole genre.
That means so much.
Insane.
Right there. Everything's bigger.
Everything is going.
I thought, I'm like, I'm not a horror guy.
Black Phone was like, what?
I'm being ignorant.
And this followed up.
So I really appreciate the sequel living up to it very high expectations.
You guys both crushed.
That literally means the world.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you so much.
Nightwing in the future.
Yes.
