DAVID BOWIE AS THE GOBLIN KING!!! Labyrinth Full Movie Reaction Watch Along:   / thereelrejects   Gift Someone (Or Yourself) An RR Tee! https://shorturl.at/hekk2 Coy & Roxy emb...ark on a CLASSIC '80s Fantasy as they give their Labyrinth Full Movie Reaction, Breakdown, Analysis, Commentary & Spoiler Review! Roxy Striar & Coy Jandreau react to Labyrinth (1986), the beloved fantasy cult classic directed by Jim Henson and produced by George Lucas, a film that blends fairy-tale adventure, surreal imagination, and iconic musical moments into one of the most enduring fantasy experiences of the 1980s. The story follows Sarah Williams (Jennifer Connelly – The Rocketeer, Requiem for a Dream), a headstrong teenager who accidentally wishes her baby brother away and must journey through a magical, ever-shifting labyrinth to rescue him before time runs out. Ruling over this strange world is Jareth the Goblin King, played by David Bowie (The Man Who Fell to Earth, The Prestige), whose charismatic menace, elaborate costumes, and musical numbers have made him one of fantasy cinema’s most unforgettable villains. As Sarah navigates riddles, traps, and bizarre creatures, she encounters loyal allies like Hoggle (Brian Henson – Return to Oz), Ludo (Ron Mueck – creature performance legend), and the chivalrous fox knight Sir Didymus (David Shaughnessy – Star Trek: Voyager). Iconic moments include Bowie’s electrifying opening number “Magic Dance,” the Escher-inspired staircase illusion, the Fireys’ anarchic dance sequence, the haunting “As the World Falls Down” ballroom fantasy, and Sarah’s final declaration of independence that redefines the film’s fairy-tale moral. With Jim Henson’s groundbreaking puppetry, Brian Froud’s creature designs, and a timeless coming-of-age message, Labyrinth remains a cherished fantasy touchstone that continues to captivate new generations. Starting point is 00:00:00 I've never seen Jennifer Connolly look like this. She's one of my first crushes. I was like 10. I was like... David Bowie is in the movie? David Bowie's top build in the movie. I really love Bowie. Fellow citizens of the reject nation.
Starting point is 00:00:19 We are sitting down to watch an all-time classic. It is time for labyrinth. Roxy, what did you just ask me? Is this Pans Labyrinth? Why no, Roxy? This is in no way affiliated with Pan's Labyrinth and is quite the different film. It's really a classic? It's, I've seen this as a youth.
Starting point is 00:00:37 I haven't seen it in more than 20 years, so I feel comfortable in saying it's a classic. People know it, but I don't remember it enough to, I will own that I have seen it, but it's been some time. You know that little about it. This has completely missed me. I have, this is, I did not know there was a movie called Labyrinth that was not Pans Labyrinth. I think I thought people were abbreviate. There are probably millions of people that this is their favorite movie of all time. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:01:00 This is going to be a zeit guy shift for you. I just asked, is this an animated movie? You guys are like, no. What? I don't know what this is. I'm so excited for like, there are people in this and there are moments. So we're watching Labyrinth. I admittedly saw this in high school and earlier.
Starting point is 00:01:13 I had it on the background when I was an artsy college kid, but it's been 20 years for me. Roxy knows that little about it to the point of not even knowing who's in it. How are you today as you prepare for your first Labyrinth? I'm really excited all of this on yours. It's been not a good day. So, Labyrinth away. I'm so, I'm more excited that I didn't know that you didn't know anything about it. So I'm excited now.
Starting point is 00:01:34 It's going to be me watching you watch this. You're excited that I'm excited that you're excited. I'm excited for them to watch us be excited. We're diving into Labyrinth in three, two. Labrins. So we're watching this on Disney Plus. It is, oh man, it's by a company you know. In addition to TriStar, there's a big company that's involved.
Starting point is 00:01:55 And this is amongst their most iconic films. Is that company Disney? No, but it's a similar vein. It's Fox? When you see the logo, predates. It's Henson and Lucas film? This is a Jim Hemson film. I can't believe that.
Starting point is 00:02:14 And pre-Disney Lucas. Is it puppets? There are. Oh, I'm so excited. It's giving Fragal Rock. You know? David Bowie? I was hoping you'd see him first.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Bowie what? Is in the movie? David Bowie's top build in the movie. What? This is how I discovered... Jennifer Conley. What's happening right now? This is how you discovered David Bowie. Yeah, before music. I was exposed to him in this and then discovered his music. Jennifer Conley and David Bowie did a movie called Labyrinth that is a Jim Henson movie with Lucas Films that's on Disney Plus. Okay. I've now caught up.
Starting point is 00:02:54 This song slaps. What's up with these owls? I've leaned all of the way forward. We had to do a focus check before because we knew this may occur. I didn't remember it opened with an immediate Bowie song because I wouldn't have known then. And Frank Oz, holy crap. Are we going to recognize his voice? I don't remember who he plays.
Starting point is 00:03:15 Greg was like, don't look it up. And I said, okay. And he said, you're going to know who it is. And I was really worried that I wouldn't. But you'd be like, wait a second. I feel like I should know this. No, no. You know this.
Starting point is 00:03:23 Because you're like a big Bowie person. I really love Bowie. I love rock and roll. music. Jim Henson directed this movie. Did you know that? This is so formative to like most people's personalities our age.
Starting point is 00:03:37 Look at the Howell Landing. Oh my God, this is giving ever after? She's one of my first crushes. I've never seen Jennifer Connolly look like this. She is a literal child. I was like 10. I was like, Give me the child through dangers untold
Starting point is 00:03:51 and hardship. Is that okay? Yeah, yeah. Thought my way here to the castle beyond the goblin city to take back the tomb. Child that you have stolen. I would have no idea that was her.
Starting point is 00:04:01 For my will is as strong as yours. And my kingdom is as great. This is film? This is crazy. Oh, it's only film. It is crazy. Yeah, obviously. It's 80s.
Starting point is 00:04:10 My kingdom is great. See young Jennifer Connolly. I can never remember that line. Oh, you're learning a playbib? I don't remember if it's like Princess Bride where the book is in the story. This feels like Secret Garden, Princess Bride, ever after. Oh, that feels like Peter Pan, the dog. That looked like Nana.
Starting point is 00:04:27 It's seven o'clock. That was a little bit of a weird ADR moment, but I don't care. Is this in New England? I was just, we always ask, and most of the time it's not. But we always get excited. I know we were just talking about Salem, but that kind of looked like a... It does look like mainstream a little bit. That looks promising.
Starting point is 00:04:57 really I'm sorry Well don't stand there in the rain Come on Alright Oh Not the dog What it's pouring
Starting point is 00:05:06 Go on into the garage Oh buddy Now that I'm an adult I totally get where the mom's coming from Oh it still hurts But It's a nice house It's a very wet dog
Starting point is 00:05:20 It's a very wet dog I ask you to babysit Only if it won't interfere With your plans Well how do you know You don't know what my plans Oh You're kind of bratty
Starting point is 00:05:28 I mean, when you're a kid though Evil parent Look at that Bob You're home We were worried about you I can't do anything right Can I? It is funny because I definitely wouldn't have
Starting point is 00:05:39 identified the parents Any of their watching of this But I see what you're saying For sure But she said I only ask you to babysit When you don't have other plans I want you to go out and live your life But she also said we never ask
Starting point is 00:05:48 And she said every weekend That's true She could be a lying B Oh where the wild things are Big fan of that I have ever watched the most movies since theaters. I hope it holds up. It's a good question. Oh, I have that.
Starting point is 00:06:01 Though you turn each side and it goes this way or that way in your little marble. Wizard of Oz, Snow White. All the references we said at the top. What's all this mom stuff? Oh, her mom was an actress. I think. Or she just feels like that's her mom.
Starting point is 00:06:15 We fed Toby and put him to bed. We do have to leave now, but we'll be back around midnight. You really wanted to talk to me, didn't you? Practically broke down the door. It's a very reasonable thing. They just did all the work for you. Someone has been in my room again What is up with her? I hate it
Starting point is 00:06:32 Are we supposed to be on her side? I assume because of the age I was But I don't know Someone save me Someone take me away from this awful place Superman Peter Pam Oh my god
Starting point is 00:06:46 How long's he been crying Once upon a time There was a beautiful young son Whose stepmother always made her stay home with the baby So I guess that was her mother And the baby was a spoiled child And he won everything for himself And the young girl
Starting point is 00:06:59 Was practically a slave That's not what it's given You've got it pretty nice Jennifer Connolly Her room is great Was that the king of the gobbins Had fallen in love with the girl And he had given her
Starting point is 00:07:08 Certain powers So one night When the baby had been particularly cruel To her Can somebody help this baby? She called on the goblins for help Listen Is that Frank Al
Starting point is 00:07:20 Is that Frank Ol Words the Goblins said and we'll take the baby to the goblin city, and you will be free. Maybe we're supposed to see her a spoiler, then that's her arc. But the girl knew that the king of the goblins would keep the baby in his castle
Starting point is 00:07:35 for ever and ever and ever. Because the baby's doing nothing wrong. And what she's saying is crate. It's a real baby. It's a real baby. One night and she was tired from a day of the house. But at the same time, like she's telling a story. I'm saying this actor is a little bit.
Starting point is 00:07:48 Oh, no, no. That real human is crying. You know how long the shot took. Oh, yeah. Well, I mean, I'm hoping the ADR to most of it. Look at the eyes, Koi. But I'm hoping they did coverage on the baby And then she was acting with an empty room Because that was a lot of coverage
Starting point is 00:08:02 I must say I wish This is going to say it I love these puppets so much They look great Goblet King Wherever you may be Take this child of mine
Starting point is 00:08:19 Far away from me I believe that, rubbish. It doesn't even start with, I wish. I believed it. I was worried for the baby. Me too. I wish the goblins would come and take you away right now. That's not hard, is it? Like, where are they? Yeah, like, where are they? Are they in the closet? Did she just hear them? I wish. Because she wished she knew it to say.
Starting point is 00:08:41 Yeah. She said it. Right now. No more crying. Oh my God. Oh, no. Like, is this a cautionary tale for young girls that are babysitters? Is any of this striking a memory? with you or no? No. Not yet. I remembered she was in it because I had a crush arm when I was a
Starting point is 00:08:59 kid but like I don't remember. I see why even though she's obnoxious. She's cutie. The horse is rocking. Why aren't you crying? Okay so I also haven't seen Pan's labyrinth. Is he similar? It's a lot darker. It's a pretty intense movie.
Starting point is 00:09:25 Ooh. Oh. Cool. I feel like she should be looking way more afraid right now. Yeah, there's literal goblins. She's kind of like, huh, huh.
Starting point is 00:09:38 Crazy puppets in my house. I guess she never gets a full look at him. I want him to speak so bad. What's said is said, Coy, isn't that true? Please, where is he? You know very well where he is. Please bring him back, please. But you said the goblin kid, King fell in love with you?
Starting point is 00:10:09 It's a crystal, nothing more. But if you turn it this way, it'll show you your dreams. But this is not a gift for an ordinary girl. Is that magnetized? How are they doing that? It's a sleight of hand. He's like, it's a skill. do you want it
Starting point is 00:10:24 then forget the baby his heterochromy is incredible it is that I don't appreciate what you're trying to do for me but I want my brother back care Sarah don't define me
Starting point is 00:10:35 bless you or whatever not religious thing we should be saying I think Gazuntite means to good health I don't know my brother says banana I respect that
Starting point is 00:10:46 you're no match for me Sarah but I have to have my brother back is there in my castle amazing it's so cool with the mazes yes never ending story vibes
Starting point is 00:10:58 the castle beyond the godland city turn back sarah turn back before it's too late I love the makeup into the eyebrows it doesn't look that far it's further than you think time is short he's spitting truth
Starting point is 00:11:12 over and over I think when I was a kid I thought he was speaking like Shakespeare but he just speaks cool did you know who that was at all no that's what I mean I found his music by like the guy that was in Labyrinth.
Starting point is 00:11:28 That's crazy. But I would have been like seven. The labyrinth doesn't look that hard. Well, come on feet. Because it was this dark crystal and Princess Bride that all had that similar vibe
Starting point is 00:11:39 for me as a kid that I'd watch a lot. Princess Bride is my fave, fave, fave. Yeah, it's one of my favorites of all time. Did you watch Dark Crystal as a kid? It's another Henson. I remember. this guy.
Starting point is 00:11:53 Excuse me. Oh, excuse me. Oh, it's you. You think that's Frank Claus? I think so. Can you help me? Oh. How sweet.
Starting point is 00:12:08 57. How could you? What do you do? Kill it? I don't even know what just how... Oh, she bit him? What did you expect fairies to do? things. Yeah, what?
Starting point is 00:12:24 Like granting wishes. Shows what you know, don't it? I guess. I'm Hoggle. Who are you? Sarah. That's what I thought. Why'd you think that? Do you know where the door to the labyrinth is?
Starting point is 00:12:36 Oh, maybe. Hoggle's a dope name. Really is. If you're a real one, you'll name your first kid, Hoggle. Not that much for real one. Sorry, I'll own it right now. How do I get into the labyrinth? Now that's more like it.
Starting point is 00:12:49 The language play is fun, like the directing and of being direct I don't know if she's caught on to that yet because Bowie always the specificity, him and the goblins would you go left or right right Clay right right right you're not going to get very far
Starting point is 00:13:16 which way would you go? I wouldn't go either way which way should I go You know your problem You take too many things for granted That's so true about her This is why she had Wizard of Oz Now it's Hoggo And don't say I didn't warn you
Starting point is 00:13:32 Did she call him Hogwarts? She did She said Hogwarts years before it existed Do you think there's any way I mean it is a gobliny vibe right Like it's fantasy I wonder if that wasn't like a hog A wart on a hog might have existed But like it wasn't Hogwartsworts yet
Starting point is 00:13:47 cool googly eyes man the character design is so rad in this yeah this is very fall of the yellow brick road and who she meets along the way we had that wizard of Oz thing so I'm kind of thinking we're going to get to our tin man our lion our scarecrow and
Starting point is 00:14:05 maybe it builds off of fantasy she knows because what were the other ones that we saw Peter Pan no you mentioned Peter Pan was snow white or snow white was there and she looks like snow white yeah That visual is gorgeous I wonder how much of it they built And when the painting starts
Starting point is 00:14:21 The sparkle on the walls is interesting Because Like to keep things wet You have to use oil usually But it's not dripping And the sparkle on the trees Yeah And the lighting on this must have been so difficult
Starting point is 00:14:33 Because where are you lighting from? Everywhere I am just taking it for granted that it does You take a lot for granted bit Synth. It's weird to watch a movie that you haven't seen in 25 years, 30 years
Starting point is 00:14:50 that you watched a lot. So this was on often. Yeah. But I have no memory of the movie, but this image in my mind that that looks familiar. Yeah, yeah. It's like glimpses.
Starting point is 00:15:02 There's this movie that I watched a lot called Thumbolina. Did you ever hear of that? I remember a single one. I just remember the cover. Oh, a little caterpillar guy Oh, he cute Did you say hello?
Starting point is 00:15:22 No, I said hello But that's close enough You're a worm, aren't you? Yeah, right You don't bring a chance Another way through this labyrinth, do you? Very happy we have subtitles on Now I'm just a worm
Starting point is 00:15:33 Come inside, meet the missis But there aren't any turns or any old Openings or anything. It's full of openings. It's just you ain't see them. I'm just across there. It's right in front of you. There's a push against it.
Starting point is 00:15:46 That's just... Whoa, there's no way through. It's not always what they seem in this place. It's like platform nine and three quarters after Hogwarts. She stole the whole thing. Hey! Oh, that was a cool visual. Really cool.
Starting point is 00:16:04 Don't go that way. Never go that way. Oh, thanks. Cool You should have kept on going down that way Should have gone straight to that castle That was really awesome That awful illusion was crazy
Starting point is 00:16:18 I think one of those rocks Had Bowie's face on it Oh This is a different crying baby Because you didn't care that he was crying before Okay, coy Are we starting to feel bad for this? The actor? Yes, but there's no PETA
Starting point is 00:16:36 for babies yet we need to look up who played toby and where he is now i hope he's doing well this would be i mean what traumatizing these are all puppets right yeah i mean in between hopefully they're gogo-gagai maybe they just pinch him before every shot puppets bowie and a chicken there's a lot going on so many puppets power of voodoo you do remind me as the babe And babe. Yay, happy baby.
Starting point is 00:17:11 They had to work really hard to get that one shot with a smile. Crying hard as babe could cry. What could I do? It's crazy to not know that any of this music was in. I'm now kind of curious, was it made for Labyrinth? Oh, I think so. I think he composed like Prince did for Batman. What kind of magic spell to use?
Starting point is 00:17:33 Sline and snails or puppy dog's tails. Because these lyrics are, for labyrinth. And baby said, I love if I've ever seen Baby 80R before. Yeah, that was wild. I like the curly hair girl. Oh, she's vibing. Look at your glow of eyes.
Starting point is 00:17:53 She's absolutely vibe. We're singing, we're gobbling in, we're going through the labyrinth. Oh. Is it going to twist it? Yeah. Oh. He's a friggin' ardvark. Your mother is an ardvark.
Starting point is 00:18:11 I like that character. I don't know what's going on, but I like it. Oh, babe, you're trying to be smart, but you're not playing by the rules of the place. Like, look behind you. Is it a monkey? Do you see how many hours are on the clock? We were just playing by different rules.
Starting point is 00:18:31 I think there was a 13 o'clock on there. Balling. I hope it's twins like they sometimes do, and that way only one trauma at a time, but that baby's been through it. For days in a row. For years, they've been developing like a labyrinth sequel, and I can't imagine in today, like other than traumatizing babies, what it would be. Sobing.
Starting point is 00:19:00 That's straight up Bowie just trying to make this kid stop crying. Yeah, yeah, they're like, let's film it. Let's toss this baby. Doesn't matter that you're out, babe. There's two of them now. Someone has been changing my marks. What a horrible place this is. It's not fair.
Starting point is 00:19:20 Oh, Alice in Wonderland. This was a dead end a minute ago. No, that's the dead end behind you. That puppet is awesome. Those are so cool. The only way out of here is to try one of these doors. One of them leads to the castle at the center of the labyrinth and the other. One leads to certain death. Bopo-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-bom.
Starting point is 00:19:42 One of us always tells the truth, and one of us always lies. He always lies. I do not. This is amazing, quite. I love it, because he can be lying. He could be telling the truth that we wouldn't know. It's so fun. Answer, yes or no.
Starting point is 00:19:54 Would he tell me that this door leads to the castle? Clever. Yes. Then the other door leads to the castle, and this door leads to certain death. They could be telling the truth. But then you wouldn't be. If you told me. If you told me that he said yes, I know the answer is no.
Starting point is 00:20:08 But I could be telling the truth. But then he would be lying. So if you told me that he said yes, I know the answer would still be no. Is that right? I think I'm getting smarter. This is a piece of cake. Oh! Oh!
Starting point is 00:20:25 That's a cool visual. Stop it. Help! What do you mean, hands? We are helping. We are helping hands. They're helping hands. hands
Starting point is 00:20:37 well then come on which way up or down we haven't got all day cool
Starting point is 00:20:45 since I'm pointed that way I guess I'll go down she you came from up uh was reasonably safe that's very
Starting point is 00:20:58 snow white hmm hmm she should have given up by now she'll never give up the dwarf's about to lead back to the beginning
Starting point is 00:21:06 she'll soon give up Where's the baby? Well laugh Well laugh I feel like telling that to people all the time I made a joke Come on Also Wizard of Oz
Starting point is 00:21:20 The big fish eyes are fun Especially the puppets the next scene Look at the glitter Only the hole This is an obliette Labyrinths full of them The woo Makes me think it's Frank Oz
Starting point is 00:21:32 Yeah The pitchiness And also Who would he be in it if it's not him? If not the other lead. But if we didn't see his name, I never would have guessed. Nope. But it gets a lot worse from here on in.
Starting point is 00:21:46 They de-aged him. I am, that's all. Nice young girl. Why are you so concerned? Is like the spirit of her mom in you or something? Don't you? She's going to bribe him? Ah.
Starting point is 00:22:00 I'll give you this. You give me the bracelet. And I'll show you the way. out of the lappery. You were gonna do that anyway. That's what would make it up particularly nice. If you won't take me to the center,
Starting point is 00:22:12 take me as far as you can, and then I'll do it on my own. From my mom. Plastic? I'll take as far as I can. Oh, cool. I don't know. It's like their friends episode.
Starting point is 00:22:38 Oh. How did they do that? It must be because when we flipped and then we turned back. Yeah, you open one side. Yeah, there's the other side. This is the light. That's really cool.
Starting point is 00:22:46 There's so much like practical. Go back while you still can. This is not the way. This feels like a Disney theme. Yeah, it really does. Like going through a ride. It's like very Indiana Jones. This must have been so much fun to work on.
Starting point is 00:23:01 I know I keep harping on the glitter, but it's just because also like they must be using little light as glit because I think they're shining light on surfaces to reflect off it. Oh, that was cool. Thank you very much. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:23:18 What have we here? Nothing. Nothing? Nothing. Oh, that was cool. Can it be that you're helping this girl? I was taken back to the beginning, Your Majesty. But actually, is that plastic thing
Starting point is 00:23:32 round your wrist? I don't know who believe. Right? If I thought for one second that you were betraying me, I'd be forced to suspend you. I know, your majesty. How are you enjoying my labyrinth? It's a piece of cake. Why would she say that?
Starting point is 00:23:49 It's not fair. You do say that so often. Oh, I wonder what your basis for comparison is. His dialogue is fantastic. I feel like asking so many people that. That was so excellent. it's not fair i wonder what your basis for comparison is i'm gonna use that coy that's a really good line
Starting point is 00:24:14 says it all because this is not fair this actually isn't fair but before but you having to watch your baby brother for a night when you had no other plans a little fair you being expected at a certain time you agreed to pretty fair a soaking wet dog going into the garage first a little bit fair them trying to talk to you before they leave you with their child. Pretty fair. You're trying to bang your door down? What?
Starting point is 00:24:45 Ha ha! I love that it's worked by like Muppets. I love the details and everything. Like, that wasn't just a thing going down the hallway. It was operated by four of them. That's cool. I told him I was taking you back to the beginning. Just to throw him off the sin. How can I believe anything you say? You have no choice? What choice you got? It's the only time I ever believe anybody
Starting point is 00:25:06 when I have no other choice. Yeah, then that's the only option. Follow the yellow brick road. That's such a pretty set. What? Yeah, very secret garden, Alice in Wonderland, coded. I don't know how many of these sets
Starting point is 00:25:20 are still, like, around, like, pieces of... How did they glitter everything? Everything. Now, don't try to embarrass me. It's like little twinkle lights, maybe. I don't think there's lights in it. I think there's shining light on, sprayed sparkle and everything.
Starting point is 00:25:34 It might be, but look, I don't know. Because see, that's shimmering. It's not emitting. There are twinkle lights, though. Yeah. I don't know. It's probably a combo of things. It's so cool.
Starting point is 00:25:47 It's not fair. No, it isn't. But that's the way it is. It's not fair, but that's the way it is. Learning important lessons as a youth. Yeah, because what's your basis for comparison. Ah, she remembers this minute. Can you help me?
Starting point is 00:25:59 I hate, I hate what we're looking at. This ostrich number? they both are sentient it makes me think he has an ostrich as a slave because why I think the ostrich has a man that he commands it might be because the ostrich is leading
Starting point is 00:26:15 I have to get to the castle is it's like I think they're in symbiosis it is an amazing design The way forward is sometimes the way back Is that a man in a suit or is it a puppet? I think it's a puppet I'm certainly not getting anywhere at the moment It's got to be multiple people operating that
Starting point is 00:26:49 That's incredible Please leave a contribution in a little box Don't you dare Them's mine I guess I can spare this Big or a couple of suckers Why did you say that About my being your friend
Starting point is 00:27:05 Because you are You may not be much for a friend But you're the only friend I've gotten Oh no We had nights Oh my god I like that Oh that's great
Starting point is 00:27:19 I wonder if we never run into That'd be amazing influential That nope That friendship was short You're my friend or not? No, no, I'm not. He looks after himself, like everyone. Are you my friend or not?
Starting point is 00:27:34 I am not. That is you, quite, too. I am not. Not to me. To others. Are you my friend or not? Not. I am not.
Starting point is 00:27:43 I'm going to be honest with you. I'm going to go. I'm a head out. The thing about that is, but I am a head out. It's healthy. It is, boundaries. Orangetang? It's awesome.
Starting point is 00:27:57 But he's hung up. It's got like horns. Oh, he's so cool looking. Oh, let him go out, get him down. Oh, I like this guy. If only had something to throw, she asked for it, and it comes to her. She's got to do more asking. It doesn't she realize?
Starting point is 00:28:15 Altruistically seemingly too. Like, at what point are they going to be like, where are these rocks coming from? I don't know if they have the brain power. They're like literally numbered I know thing one and thing two This is one of the most whimsical movies I've watched A long time There should be more Halloween costumes
Starting point is 00:28:35 From this movie There might have been in the 80s and 90s Is that any way to treat someone Who's trying to help you? There's probably Bowies And we just didn't clock it Oh he is a delight Ludo down
Starting point is 00:28:48 Ludo What happened to Ludo? Is that your name Seemed like such a nice beast It's interesting thing making us like slowly more endeared to her. Well, she's changing. Yeah, she's taking lessons and growing. Oh, Ludo was awesome. Look at him. That's right, Ludo. I'm Sarah. That's a never-ending story face. We're seeing her be nicer to him than she's ever been to anybody ever. Well, she did call
Starting point is 00:29:15 hoggle her friend. She did, but she took some effort. Yeah. Just a second. I want to ask you something, Ludo. Of course she wants something from you. I have to get to the castle, the center of the No, it's a lot of the way. No. Yeah. Where did they come from? Hmm. It's a lot of fun in the edit and the production design combo.
Starting point is 00:29:39 Oh, other one. It's very rude to stare. I'm sorry, I was just wondering which daughter choose. He's no good after him. He's deaf as a post because it goes through his ears. He's his ears. That's amazing Good to get that thing out
Starting point is 00:30:01 He's no good talking to him He's deaf as a poe Mamble, Mamble, Mamble Where do these doors lead Search me, we're just the knockers Knock and the door will open He has so many interesting Like different characteristics
Starting point is 00:30:19 She did love her dog Yeah, it's got a very dog-like energy It's kind of mean Yeah it is Now he's trapped again Isn't this very Princess Bride This is for sure Going to go into the bog
Starting point is 00:30:38 Yeah And he's alive you little chap I think I'll call him Jarrett If Bowie called my kid Jarrett I would rename my kid Jarrett I believe you I think that'd be a real thing That would happen
Starting point is 00:30:50 Imagine a big thing like you being scared But it's nothing to be afraid of Oh Ludo! But it's literally Princess Bride Yeah, is this the pit of despair? Yeah. But sparklier.
Starting point is 00:31:05 Oh, that's cool. Wow! Yeah, that optical illusion was incredible. Sick, sick. Oh. Oh. For one moment, I thought you were running to help her. Not after my warnings.
Starting point is 00:31:23 would be stupid. Oh. Ah! Ha ha ha ha ha. I've just noticed your lovely jewels are missing. Oh, yes. But first,
Starting point is 00:31:33 I'm off to take the little lady back to the beginning of the labyrinth. I've got a much better plan. He has like... Underwear pants, boots, and a leather jacket. It's an interesting texture combination.
Starting point is 00:31:45 Give her an apple. It's very snow white. Mm. Or is it a peach? It looks like a peach. Yeah. Oh, come, come, come. Oh.
Starting point is 00:31:52 You don't think a young girl could ever like a repulsive little scab? She said we was. Boosom companions? Weird lie. If she ever kisses you, I'll turn you into a prince. Prince of the land of stench. What a specific threat if she ever kisses you? What's going on?
Starting point is 00:32:13 What are these guys? How have you forgotten this, Koi? This feels like something you'd never forget. This is like, these are my favorite guys so far. These guys in Ludo. This is like where the wild things are, kind of. You just green screened the whole. I love how high energy and chill they are.
Starting point is 00:32:49 These guys are amazing. I'm gonna download this song They're like rasta energy And meth energy and I love it So when things get too tall And even down looks up Bad luck They like glow and like paralysis demon ways
Starting point is 00:33:10 Come on They're huge It's wild I thought they were like this big and zoomed in That was his biggest Jennifer Connolly. Take off of a head. Yeah, yeah, let's take off of her. Hey, lady, that's his head.
Starting point is 00:33:30 Hey, that's my head. Now they're small. It was because they were upright, I don't know. We on drugs, baby. All of the drugs I haven't done. We on drugs. Are in that scene. The fire people are fascinating.
Starting point is 00:33:48 You've come to help me. Kiss her. Kiss him. Nope, the Prince of Stench. Don't kiss me, don't kiss me, because that's a real thing, babe. That's true, that's true. Is Lugo okay? I'm worried.
Starting point is 00:34:04 Oh, no. Oh, no, farting, belching, the river. Does it smell the fart acting? It's important training. Joey Tribiani taught us that. as a kid i would have thought this was the funniest i just fart noises as a scene is genius for a hinson movie oh my god imagine going into that i know you came back to help me and i know that you're my friend i just come to get me property back give you uh give me what don't give it to her
Starting point is 00:34:46 She's going to save you Ludo Ludo Under you Wizard of Oz with the two feet under the house Ah, I could catch Oh my God
Starting point is 00:35:03 There's a bridge I feel like we've got to pick up a third friend If we want to do the Wizard of Oz reference fully Is Ludo the lion Yeah And Hoggill's the tin man I feel like Scarecrow. Oh, okay, I see that.
Starting point is 00:35:19 Oh. Is this our third friend? Possibly. We've got to get out of this dance. Smell bad. Oh my God, he can't smell it. I smell nothing, but I live by my sense of smell. I'm sworn to do my duty.
Starting point is 00:35:40 Little dog creature Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no. I can conquer this mountain. Oh my god Oh no, oh no, oh no. Little scrappy doo of this universe, I don't know if you're gonna make it, man. it, man. Sir didimus.
Starting point is 00:36:22 There's our third, third. Didimus. I cannot let you pass. But you just said Ludo is your brother. I have taken an oath. I have sworn with my life blood. No one shall pass this way without my Can I have your permission?
Starting point is 00:36:41 Yeah. She's learning manners and gratitude. To ask for what she needs. How's Ludo going to get across? Oh, and she's rough. He's a cowardly lion. He doesn't know what to do. Oh, no, he's calling rocks. Oh, he's helping?
Starting point is 00:37:19 The rock moved. He's summoning. Is he like a rock god? Did he do the rocks earlier? All of the practical stuff in this is so sick. It really is. there's an entire 10 minutes week it's to farting in this movie
Starting point is 00:37:43 it's all right and Brutus you can come out now Is that going to be her dog Toto? Oh it's a different dog But it's Toto He is Toto and he rides it He's got a harness Saddles
Starting point is 00:37:55 That's the word What a cool practical Muppet All right now that's our crew For the rest of the movie Just as soon as Huggle gives him my present And she'll forget Everything What if that baby's the director, like his son, like man-made moon?
Starting point is 00:38:13 Like, what if that's Duncan Jones? Because I think Duncan's our age. That would be crazy. Maybe we can find some berries or something. Berries. It's a line from Thumblina. I've thought more about Thumblina today than I have most of my life. Wow, you gave it to her like that.
Starting point is 00:38:33 Stay strange. Hugo, what have you done? Use context clues. dancing This is like the poppies Ah, poppies That's a horse of a different color Oh, we got multiple now
Starting point is 00:38:48 Is it for each one of them? Oh, that's a cool effect I wonder how they did that then Turn into like a floating On wires, yeah That's cool That's cool Is that her as her mom?
Starting point is 00:39:07 I don't know if it's like another reality Looked like what her mom looked like in those things, right? Good catch. They didn't even realize she's not there. I just realized I get invited to this party sometimes and I never go called the Labyrinth of Jarrett and it looks like this and I didn't realize it was in reference to a movie every year in L.A., there's this party called Labyrinth of Jareth and I've never been
Starting point is 00:39:37 but people dress like this. Next time that you invited, you have to go. So people do dress like this. There's a whole party for it. Where is it? It's in LA. It's like a big, like a bowl. Who's throwing it?
Starting point is 00:39:47 No, I just get invited to like Facebook group. My friends go. I've never been. But it's called the Labyrinth of Jerrith and he's... Now I get it. I'm a little nervous because she was like the king falls in love with me. And she's a child and was just drugged. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:03 And people really didn't like that I had an issue with that for interview with a vampire. Oh, with Kirsten Dunst? Yeah, she's just so young. Yeah. I mean, I think Jennifer Connolly's like 14.5. She's a child here. There's no way she's of age here. I mean, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:40:19 As the thing sweeps through, makes no sense for you. The transition was interesting, because now we're like in the castle, I assume. And she's, yeah. But I'll be there for you as the world falls down. Her hair. It's so good. This whole outfit. Make up hair, dress.
Starting point is 00:40:40 That is so cool. His dragon's dope too. Sick. Huh. Spiky all over, Mollet? Yeah, I was thinking Spiky Mollett. It's got some height to it. What an unpleasant sensation, but with beautiful music.
Starting point is 00:40:59 Like, what an interesting vibe this scene has. Like, overwhelmed, paranoia. Yeah, you got to, like, shake the drug. Oh, is she in the bubble? Cool. She'll never forgive me. I've lost my only friend. That's what I've done.
Starting point is 00:41:22 She's going to forgive you so fast. Oh. You can't look where you're going if you don't know where you're going. Helpful. Well, look here. That's what? Oh. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:41:38 That's what you were looking for? A long time ago. And now she thinks she's done looking, then she'll go home. And see, if there's anything else you'd like. I definitely trust that laugh. Yeah, for sure. That's what I'd follow.
Starting point is 00:41:53 All right, I'd literally home. Sometimes you have to go back to go forward, but that's pretty far back. It was just a dream. Also very Harry Potter. But it was so real. Escher? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:42:07 Not a dream Here's your panda slippers you know how much you like your panda slippers you never wanted their throw away did you there they are Everything she's around as a kid oh it's little horsey you love little horsey don't you Also just showing us how much she was given how much she has and how much she wasn't grateful for what she has is a really good point Here's dear old flopsy you'll want her right there you go wizard of Oz Yeah making sure we see it And now she's getting burdened like the old lady with things. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:42 I fought my way here to the castle. Beyond the goblin city, take back the child that you have stone. Yeah. What's the matter my dear? Don't you like your toys? What the red lips? Very snow white red lips. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:42:59 It's not junk. This is not junk. Yes, it is. Ooh, cool. The paradigm is breaking. And, yeah, all the facades crumbling. Oh, we go right back. Her friends found her.
Starting point is 00:43:19 She's not going to want to go without Hoggle. Hmm. Those are the gates to the Goblin City. Let's go quickly. We don't have much time. Nope, never mind. To the Emerald City. I bet if there was the internet when this came out,
Starting point is 00:43:36 it would have been like the wicked crap. a passionate fandom cool it's in form one like mecca thing it's a gundem it's a gundum what a cool I can't tell the scale of a lot of the stuff I think it changes oh it surely does but it works Because it's all imagination. It feels like a Sega video game. Hoggle! Redemption for Hoggle.
Starting point is 00:44:27 Oh, Koi. That's just like Wizard of Oz. It's behind the curtain. Yeah. Yeah, Hoggle. Hoggle's the man. Doing the work. Get him, Frank Oz. Part of me wonders that the dog is Frank Oz.
Starting point is 00:44:56 Oh, maybe. I think it's Hoggle, but... Well, this is Hoggle kind of has the... Yoda thing at sometimes. Totally, but do you hear the... Listen to the dog. I think it's hoggle though I'm not asking to be forgiven
Starting point is 00:45:10 Sherrith made me give you that peach I don't care what you think of me I think you are ashamed you got feelings I totally I was a coward cowardly lying in that maybe Ah Rarely have I seen such courage You are a valiant man
Starting point is 00:45:25 Do or do not there is not try Hoggle and the friends Now there are a whole bunch of friends Here are your things Hogle thanks for your help Cute these sets are beautiful insane do you think this is all done indoors i have to imagine because you like the lighting and the control of everything they have i mean henson studio bought
Starting point is 00:45:47 chaplain studios down the street that's the whole studio set they've got to the gates and they're on their way to the castle call out the guard take the baby and hide it oh no there's no place like home. I think it's too direct, but it would fit. The miniatures and the cannons at all. This is a painted sky. It's so cool.
Starting point is 00:46:23 Puppet fight. Ambrosius don't give a F. Ambrosch out. I think we've got them surrounded. I think we've got them surrounded. He's the best. I love when Ambrosius is a puppet too and they make him shake and then it cuts back to the regular dog. Ah!
Starting point is 00:46:50 Ah! Ha ha ha ha! Tallyho! Tallyho. Oh. Ambrosius! He's so good Got a point
Starting point is 00:47:10 Open the side of the house The house is rocking I mean when you build practically Like this Ugh That's insane It's so pretty It looked like they were using miniatures
Starting point is 00:47:29 But I don't think they are because They can't hear Oh my god Had enough have you Throw down your weapons And I'll see that you're well treated I'm like my favorite character driver I need the confidence of that man
Starting point is 00:47:46 The dream The dream Throw down your weapons I'll see that you're well treated Okay cool I think John is Jennifer Connolly A brat No but like someone that's all true
Starting point is 00:47:57 Yeah this part of Jennifer Connolly Like a noble leader Thoughtful navigating the world. All right, he can call rocks. He's bowling. Yes. Hit them with your best shot.
Starting point is 00:48:17 I think they filmed it in reverse so they could land where they wanted them. I think they... Whoa, Nellie. Pugh, pew, pew. What are you going to do with that rock? Yeah. Pue, pew, pew.
Starting point is 00:48:47 This is exactly Wizard of Oz. I have to face him alone. But why? Because that's the way it's done. If that is the way it is done, then that is the way you must do it. Exactly. I mean. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:48:59 It is. Should you need us? A call. If that's the way it's done, then that's the way you must do it. Sir Dendemus. Sir Dendemus. 19, whatever, this came out. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:14 Call, because you need them, girl. That is so cool. How'd they do this? I wish I remembered the name of the painter, but yes, it's awesome. Cool. He's in the upside down. Awesome. Precious thing.
Starting point is 00:49:38 Whoa. Cool. Just as I can be so cruel. Cool. That was definitely in reverse, obviously. Yeah. I can't live within you. Baby sitting's going to feel so easy after this.
Starting point is 00:50:11 She'll be grateful to spend time with her baby brother. Without being in a painting or a labyrinth. Leap of Faith. That's really cool for 30 years ago. Give me the child. Sarah, beware. That fit, though. He's a feather man.
Starting point is 00:50:34 I can be cruel. What have you done that's generous? Everything that you wanted. You asked that the child be taken. You coward before me. I was frightening. I have reordered time. I have turned the world upside down.
Starting point is 00:50:48 A little bit of gas lighting. I am exhausted from living up to your expectations. Isn't that generous? Through dangers and toll and hardships are numbered. I have fought no way here to the captain. Recied it, man. Now you have the power. Look what I'm offering you.
Starting point is 00:51:14 Your dreams. And my kingdom is great. I ask for so little. She didn't even look. I can never remember that line. Just fear me, love me. Do as I say. And I will be your slave.
Starting point is 00:51:29 Fear me, love me, and do as I say. You can't go up on your lines now, babe. You got to remember. You have no power over me. When did the parents say they were coming home. By midnight, I think. Oh, he's just been sleeping. No crying for this baby.
Starting point is 00:52:07 Oh, and now selfless. A lot of good lessons for kids in this. Really good. I don't think of Jim Henson as a director, but there's so many crazy visuals and accomplishments. The mom stuff is interesting. There's a background. Oh, and there's Jarrett, but like visually.
Starting point is 00:52:23 Yeah, yeah. She's putting her away. Oh! No! She's like it was all real. And remember fair maiden? Should you need us? Yes. Should you need us? Cute.
Starting point is 00:52:43 This is exactly Wizard of Oz. This is perfect. I love that they're in the mirror. You're my favorite of all. For no reason at all. I need you. Cats the musical. Why didn't you say so?
Starting point is 00:52:55 I hope you. I don't know. Amazing. Muppet Parker! Mumpin party. Her parents are like, what the? What's happening upstairs? Yeah, fire guys.
Starting point is 00:53:14 I do. Does anyone want to play a game of Scrabble the last line of the movie? I hope so. Yep, I think it's where we're at. You'll remind me of the babe, babe with the power. What a journey of madness that was. No, see, Hoggle was not. Brian Henson.
Starting point is 00:53:41 Frank Oz was the wise man. Who's the wise man? What? The one that she gave the ring to? Yeah. I think. That's crazy. We were very wrong.
Starting point is 00:53:53 Very wrong. All right. Well, that's hysterical. Was Labyrinth. A movie Roxy didn't even know existed until an hour and 45 minutes ago. No idea. We have just experienced Labyrinth for pretty much the first time as an adult
Starting point is 00:54:08 and the very first time for me. I want to thank the fine folks at Prepper for editing this down and editing that. I want to think the fine folks that are patrons for watching this in its entirety like you were sitting on the couch next to us. There's also exclusive watch longs over on Patreon that John and Greg do just for those rejects.
Starting point is 00:54:25 Any good discounts on teas like these. We're going to get to the Patreon questions here in a second because you guys guide the conversation. We appreciate your questions. Help us know what to talk about. We're going to get to those in a moment. But first, for your first labyrinth experience, what are your initial thoughts?
Starting point is 00:54:40 Man, this is so up my alley. I understand why Greg said, like, I saved this reaction for you because I can't believe I didn't know this existed. That's bold. I'm a huge, huge Wizard of Oz girl. That's probably, and I'm a musical theater girl. So, like, not that this was,
Starting point is 00:54:56 it's hard to refer to this as a musical because it's not, because nobody's ever singing. Like, it's not really... Mouths and his own words. Right, right. So there's like one song. What is that?
Starting point is 00:55:06 It's very music-based, though. So I could understand why somebody would call it that. But the Wizard of Oz references are so... There's so many parallels, obviously. They do that on purpose. It's not like... They're clearly paying homage, which is great. And then on top of that, I'm a big Bowie fan.
Starting point is 00:55:23 And it's really cool to see when somebody gets their start, like Jennifer Conley, natural instincts are so strong. So this is super duper up my alley. I want to say it didn't disappoint, but that would be the wrong thing because I had no expectations. Yeah. I get why some people think this is their favorite movie all the time.
Starting point is 00:55:44 That's what I mean, like there are a million, like this is a huge thing in pop culture. Yeah, I get that. How did you feel? It was fun. It was weird because I hadn't seen it since I was so young that there were moments that feel like almost like when you read a kid's book that you read as a kid to like someone else like i remembered images but not context for anything so like you didn't remember a lot of the character i didn't remember anything i didn't remember any of the characters journeys but i remembered
Starting point is 00:56:07 like the images of that clearly the long thing in the labyrinth left to mark because that was one of the strongest images um i remembered kind of her bedroom um i remembered like the the distortion of time and space because i remember being confused that's about it so like it was cool because those are just fragments of ideas of memories so i got to you know re-experienced something in a very different way because this was on a lot when I was a kid my my parents are big uh dark crystal and Jim Henson and like they're into that world a lot like their my parents are artists so I can see that when they came out here I brought them to Henson Studios and like I have friends that work for Henson so I got to show them like this world and they were so excited because
Starting point is 00:56:46 obviously when I was this age they were in their 20s because my parents had me so young I know I know so they would have been the perfect age for this so like I think that was really special to watch and understand the context of my parents loving the Hinsons because this would have been why they showed me it. So it's cool to be an adult and revisit something my parents clearly wanted me to live as a kid. Did they say that they love this movie? Do you know?
Starting point is 00:57:05 I know they do. Because this and Dark Crystal were on all the time. Wow. We're also a big Fifth Element House, which has a lot of cool puppetry. We also like Wing Commander, which is a lot of cool puppetry. Haven't seen, haven't seen. Whoa.
Starting point is 00:57:16 There's so much cool puppetry you haven't seen. Yeah, I have a big whole. Wing Commander is Matt Lillard and Freddie Prince Jr. That's cool. And they're awesome in it. So I was in a movie. MCSher. I call, I said it.
Starting point is 00:57:27 I knew Escher. You said, see, see. I was close. I was like, yeah, sure, I was close. I was in a movie, sorry. Those are the last things I wanted to catch. I was in a movie last year that was called Crest that the main character is a, is a puppet. And it's a sock puppet that the woman that puppeteered it was from Jim Henson's company.
Starting point is 00:57:47 And so I spent a lot of time asking her about it and like, and she would like fix it up. They're like one man bands. Like she would like come with her sewing glue, like all this stuff. And then she would do it. And it was about like 45 pounds. Wow. It was heavy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:58:01 And I would have a hard time lift. This girl was under tables, through the, like, whatever, watching. I went on set every day even when I wasn't shooting because I thought it was so cool to watch. And watching how she would maneuver it. Just give me so much of more respect. And I want to watch more thing with puppets because it is like the hardest thing you could possibly do. It's insane. I mean, that's so many.
Starting point is 00:58:21 I know some people. Don't understand hyperbole. Yes, exactly. No, no. It's hard. work on oil rigs in there. Anything. Anyone's ever done.
Starting point is 00:58:30 I think that it's harder than what I do. Let me say that. Like, even just lifting something for, I mean, it's hours and hours. It's 12 hours a day. And like, figure out every facial move and all of the stuff. And being coordinated while it's that heavy while, sometimes even like emoting and speaking and acting. Right.
Starting point is 00:58:45 And I did not realize. And knowing the angles. Like that they make their pup, they do the puppy. It's really crazy. So watching this, I feel like I had a new respect for a lot of them and seeing just like the emotions and the, it's so cool and 86 like I'm trying to I'm trying to see how old Jennifer Connelly is because she was like starting her career obviously I lost my phone somehow um but like I have
Starting point is 00:59:06 no idea um like you know how far along Bowie into his career obviously like he's around in the 70s so he's first build and he's established but this might have been Jennifer Connolly's first thing how old was she this is what we need to know yeah I'm curious okay so and also I need to know about the glitter that these are the two important things and then we'll get to patron questions Jennifer Okay, I'm looking up Labyrinth What year did this movie come out?
Starting point is 00:59:30 86 And she was born in 1970 So she would have been 15 When they filmed it 16 When it came out Okay So I was right Like I said 1415 I think
Starting point is 00:59:39 Yeah, you did That makes it a little weird But there was never any like line crossing So you know Yeah That's true I can't think how long she's been at this for Yeah since I mean 86
Starting point is 00:59:51 Oh yeah I didn't look at what her first credit was But yeah I mean, she was so impressive, like you said, her instincts, her sensational, and just her presence. Like, she has to lead a whole movie, and it's got to be, like, whimsical and balancing tones, and there's so much going on, like, just magnetic. I need to know, this is my actual Google search. How did they do the glitter in labyrinth?
Starting point is 01:00:13 I am fascinated by the response, because I'm not sure that is a commonly Googled question. This is sorry, this is AI. Oh. The glitter and crystal ball, magic, and labyrinth wasn't CGI. Thank you. Thanks. In 1986, it wasn't computer generated because computers were the size of rooms.
Starting point is 01:00:27 It was achieved with practical effects and master juggler, Michael Moushian, who stood behind David Bowie, hidden by his cloak, performing intricate contact juggling with his arms. How crazy is that? Okay, but that was with that, the illusion. I want to know about this set.
Starting point is 01:00:45 This was her seventh credit. She had done six things. She'd been in something in 19, she'd been in a show in 82, a Duran Duran music video. Uh, yeah. So Jennifer Connolly, killing it. People also ask, how much glitter did they use in Labyrinth?
Starting point is 01:00:57 Here's the answer to that. While there's no exact measurement, Labyrinth used a massive, almost uncountable amount of glitter and sparkle effects, particularly for Jarrett the Goblin King's costumes like his feathered sleeves and shiny tights, and for magic effects contributing to the iconic fantasy look with puppeteer Brian Fraud and designers creating countless sparkling elements through the precise quantity, though the precise quantity remains. It's a delightful mystery, much like the movie itself.
Starting point is 01:01:24 That's a cute answer. Yeah, it is. I'm just obsessed with the glitter. I'm sure the comments are like, why the fuck can't she stop talking about the glitter? Why much glitter? How did they do the glitter? I just, I loved the glitter. I'm a glitter girl.
Starting point is 01:01:36 You're a musical theater kid. Yeah, totally. The owl in the title sequence is computer generated. The first attempt at a photo realistic CGI animal character in a feature film. That's cool. I mean, it didn't look photorealistic. Why didn't you respond like that to my glitter? Glitter is the coolest. That's the lead of the film. Glitter, Bowie Connolly. Duh.
Starting point is 01:01:57 Huh. Yeah, obviously. Well, those were our initial labyrinth thoughts. I want to know what you guys want to know from us. Let's check out the Patreon Questions. Let's do it, dude. I'm curious. First up, we got Brie Garcia. Thank you, Bree. Wow, I can't believe you guys are watching one of my all-time favorite movies. Like I said, millions of people. Some people think I've tried to show the film tour and I'll put off by the puppets, especially seeing them in 4K now as opposed to Greenie TV. set from the 80s how did the practical effects and puppetry land for you all without nostalgia perfectly
Starting point is 01:02:26 i couldn't have liked it better there there was like no moments even when things looked a little funny it's the 80s it whimsy yeah perfect i'm glad i didn't watch it necessarily in 4k we streamed it uh i imagine it looks better on an old tv something i've been thinking about doing and this is me being a millennial weirdo is um i want to get older TVs for like some of my tv watching so i can watch stuff on VHS and I can watch stuff that isn't sometimes when you upgrade stuff too much it does take some of the magic away one of the things uh me and my fiance are talking about doing with our kids we don't have kids yet but when we have kids is um I want to raise them on 80s and 90s TV because it's less stimulating and it's less like schizophrenic and messy and I think that is a better
Starting point is 01:03:09 way like the pacing of this is so different than today's kids movies um but I also think like older tech is a little cleaner um so I want less screens that are like modern stuff and having an old TV and VHS player is one of the things I want to do so I would like to watch this like this or less res so it feels more magical and you know I feel you on that like the TV thickness should be at least a foot yeah yeah I need to not be able to lift that fucker yeah remember that man so dope and like the ones that were like a VCR underneath the TV and the kitchens of course at the kitchen TV which was the screen was six and a half inches and it was just as thick super thick and like the ones when my first friend got like a TV in his car like for the backseat that was like
Starting point is 01:03:50 oh your friend's rich do you remember um the the first time they put out those little DVD players changed lives and like vans and stuff it was crazy work it was like you flip it open it was amazing yeah that's what i want back uh captain fernandez thank you for the question they have been trying to make a sequel for years and now it looks like robert eggers has been tapped to direct it given that david bowie is not only are with us do you think a sequel should pick up with the original left off or going a new direction with different characters um i kind of don't feel like this lends itself to a sequel i understand why they'd want to do it but like is the sequel jennifer conley has a kid and the kid wishes something and then they go and it's not david bowie and instead it's somebody
Starting point is 01:04:34 else i had a cough and then read j rushin's question which we're going to get to and it threw me completely off because i was just thinking like what would i want a sequel to be and all of the things in that were like so flabbercasting. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I see that. I think Robert Eggers would do a really dark, sinister take. That would not be like a sequel. It would be like a kidnapped baby in a demonic world. Like Robert Eggers doesn't speak whimsy to me.
Starting point is 01:04:58 Yeah, that's true. So I'm okay with the sequel, but kind of it's like just do a different movie then. Yeah, I would just say like if you're going to do a sequel, do alien to aliens, but even more extremely different. Yeah, okay. Like in the world of Labrint. It would actually, you haven't seen it, but it would be more like Pan's Labrant. but yeah uh robert eggers i've heard that as well um i know there's been a lot of different directors attached over the years i don't know if them having him attached is any more real than the
Starting point is 01:05:22 others i don't know where it stands but i love bowie as this character and i didn't remember why i did have that instinct but i love boi so i think that'll be hard for a lot of people that are really attached but we'll see all right uh nicky sonrisa thank you very much hope you enjoyed the movie such an iconic 80s movie that helped raise us millennials what's your favorite song from the movie. Well, it's like all the songs that I love kind of actually have a little bit darker lyrics about having a crush on a kid. The babe,
Starting point is 01:05:53 yeah, the baby. Well, the power of voodoo. I think that was about the baby. Remind me of the babe. Okay, good. So I think that's my favorite. I also think it's about a baby. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:03 Hopefully. Voodoo, voodoo. And also, that's the only one that I kind of like have an inkling of like, I think I've heard that in the wild. Like, that song has a little resonance. yeah and then our last one here jay russian this what made me laugh cough a second ago because i was trying to imagine it thank you jay russian question who do you cast in labyrinth updated my choice
Starting point is 01:06:22 is weird main role sabrina carpenter and lady gaga for the goblin queen used i was picturing sabrina carpenter and all of her like music videos and her like pin-up thing and just picturing her like in labyrinth and it was such an odd but jennifer connelly does have that kind of like um innocent 50s like i think of her in the rocketeer so i can see the Jennifer Connolly into Sabrina Carpenter type parallel, but I can't picture Sabrina Carpenter in this world because I think of her as a pop star more than a, and I know she acts, but that was my
Starting point is 01:06:52 giggle laugh. I kind of feel like Queen Latifah could be a good David Bowie role. I mean, I see the Gaga. The Gaga one I see too, but it depends on what direction we're going in. It has to be somebody larger than life. A hundred percent. Queen Latifah is definitely larger than life. Yeah, that's like why. So is Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga is larger than life. She's a good casting choice.
Starting point is 01:07:16 I don't see the Sabrina one as much. Also, because the age purpose, like this still needs to be, like, dream and young. Obviously, like, that immediately leaves me with, like, a Millie Bobby Brown, maybe even somebody younger. I'm trying to think of the... I feel like a Maya Hawk.
Starting point is 01:07:38 Maybe she's a little told now. I can't... It depends on what the story is. Right. Because if it's supposed to be like your dream, you know, young, young. Yeah, you're watching It because I know you're putting out things. Oh, I love it so much. It was the greatest ever.
Starting point is 01:07:51 So, like, it's my second favorite show the year. All those kids were amazing, too, though. That in the studio, I'm not comfy too. The little girl who does Ronnie. Yeah. She would be awesome. Yeah. I don't know what the actress's name is.
Starting point is 01:08:00 Or even, like, she was from It, the movie, but Sophia Lilith. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Super good. But as far as Jarith, Chris Tucker. that's interesting different take but like big and larger than life you know what I'm trying to think of like if we wanted to do a one to one comparison who is the David
Starting point is 01:08:19 Bowie of right now like who our boy David DeSmalchon he's got a coolness nobody's got such a like a he for sure would be amazing but they wouldn't be able to do like the singing yeah I'm trying to think of like who do we have right now I mean I Austin Butler
Starting point is 01:08:36 but the singing part he sings he's Elvis the putting out music I mean like doing the soundtrack I see I see like making original songs Right like who do we have that is a primarily a composer like Will Smith That would be wild
Starting point is 01:08:54 That would be wild That's what made me think like Yeah Maybe Gaga Yeah Gaga That's a good call It's kind of a good poll Yeah
Starting point is 01:09:03 We've got some weird movies just Just in the last five minutes Leave comments about it Because we really don't have of rock stars in the same way. I mean, like, Mick Jagger, but like he's, I think he's being held together with tape. Older. Yeah. I think you'd have to puppet him. Certainly older with that. It'd be a lot of puppetry in the movie if they also made Jerrith. Like Stevie Nix. Yeah. She did a season of American horror story. Okay. And she's witchy woman for sure. But these are people
Starting point is 01:09:31 of Bowie's time. Right. We don't have a lot of people. I mean, even Will Smith of not really right now and as far as music. I see people on TikTok sometimes. I'm like, oh, that person like Stephen Sanchez, he kind of has his own thing going on. Benson Boone act.
Starting point is 01:09:45 Exactly. Like, that's crazy, but accurate. You know what I mean? Who's making like this kind of pop whimsy? Yeah. Like,
Starting point is 01:09:53 because I feel like magic moon, moonrise, uh, whatever. What do you think about MGK? How crazy would that be? I think I love it. And I think I'm worried about loving it.
Starting point is 01:10:06 because he's such a good actor and also he's doing pop stuff. The soundtrack of this would be so weird. It's like half rap, half. Because this pop stuff is like his last 10 years. He hasn't made a rap album in a while. I know. I know.
Starting point is 01:10:23 It's also crazy that right now you're like who's our modern Bowie? Okay. And on the long enough timeline we got to MGK. I'm not saying that. I know you're not. But that we don't have anyone we had to go through. And I like MGK. so yeah that's a weird that's a weird poll that's so funny okay all right there it is
Starting point is 01:10:44 m gk and uh one of the kids from it in labyrinth two directed by robert eggers they would be like what is going on there last one from hunter preston i didn't i scrolled down a little bit thank you hunter roxy i challenge you to dress of the goblin king you can pull it off how would i do that leather jacket high collar tights it's the Lowie shirt. That would be so sick. I honestly think I could. The hair I'd have to get right also. That hair was something. Spiky mullet. I'm kind of into this challenge. Halloween's a good while away. Yeah, but do you want to know something that I hate about myself? You want to do it like now for no reason? No. Okay. I refuse to not do a sexy Halloween outfit.
Starting point is 01:11:28 That's crazy sexy. I would have to sexify it. That is, it's tights and leather. What is sexy about that it's the hair i'm a mostly heterosexual man and i was like you know what i can get it you're right you're like i can make it cute it's like you're right you're right all right let's see if i can pull it all right guys that's the gauntlet's been thrown the leather gauntlet has been thrown we will see if roxy can somehow make jareth sexy i feel like he's like a sex symbol yeah it's just a lot of coverage for now yeah 2025 who knows if there's a frilly shirt under the leather. That's what I'm saying. Time will tell. Challenge by Hunter Preston might get your way. Well, that is going to do it. An odd ending to an odd journey. Yes, yes. Of whimsy, wonder and
Starting point is 01:12:16 puppets. What a time. So glad I revisited that after all these years. So glad I got to share it with Roxy, who had never even known it existed. I like that our probation is over. And now we can watch. One day we're going to find a Boston movie we haven't seen. I know, but there isn't one yet. There isn't one yet. There is one every time we watch a movie and go, is it Boston? And one day it will be. All right. Thank you, patrons. Thank you. Viewers. Thank you, Reject Nation. We'll see you for the next one.
