lead the witness here. I feel like this is much stronger overall. It's more of what I love about Stranger Things pretty much from beginning to win. Yeah, I think it sucks and I hate the show. Exactly. That's when I like, I hate watch this show. No, no, yeah. I'm I would say

not to be led, but I am with you. I think this has kind of been on an upward trajectory increasingly over time. You know, and yeah, as of this chunk of the season, I have been very much enjoying what we've got so far. I like

that there's a little bit. This is scratching the itch of having some kind of mystery and some kind of bigger, what the hell is happening to kind of re-contextualize what I thought I knew. This has more of that than the first installment of the season, which just makes it more

hooky and gripping. And yeah, they've had a lot of... The things that have stood out are yeah, the whole development at the upside-down Hawkins Lab and what it means for the wormhole and And, you know, all of that very cool, very interesting. The melty shit is a neat motif to add to the season visually

that feels unique to this season, which is another thing that we were hoping for. And, yeah, I just think they've given a lot of really lovely scenes to different pairs of characters. You know, it seems like one of the major things they're focusing on this season is to really pay off the emotional journeys of the characters and to give these actors who have grown across the show some real meat to sink their teeth into one last time. And I think that has been a joy to watch.

Yeah. Yeah. Just like, I mean, we'll go over them, I'm sure. But, you know, the Steve and Dustin back and forth has been great. Nancy and Jonathan, I cared more about in this one episode than most of the show. Very fucking long time. But since the early seasons, yeah. I was like, yeah, I think season three was when I stopped,

I started like not really care about their dynamics. as a duo as much than four of his non-existent. Well, in four years, like, Nancy and Robin now. Yeah, it's like Nancy stayed kind of like a consistently interesting character. Yeah, but it was the Jonathan part that was really kind of going downhill.

Yeah, at least for us. And I think in this season, they really made a concerted effort to bring it back. Because the first season is like Joyce, you know, the kids, outside of Will, who's not really around. And it's the buyer's family. and the kids and then Hopper and 11 right yeah and I think they've been bringing it like a good

full circle with that and I love the conversation they had I thought that was actually really unique for going against a cliche which normally is we resolve and then we say will you marry me but making it like oh it's not about that and like putting a ring on it wouldn't solve all the problems and I think that was something we were saying when the ring was introduced yeah earlier like well I was not going to solve it you know that's just going to buy a a new layer to it. Yeah, yeah. And a lot of the, and for a season, it seems like one of the

the through lines that the show is doing for this season is a lot of characters are having to come to terms with the truth of what's going on inside of them, the walls that they've put up while physically going into the walls of Vecna's mind and going through like the barriers there and doing like the real physical

depiction of walls and barriers and memories and trauma with Max and Holly and Beck and Henry. And so I like what they're pulling here. And I like the mirroring that they got with a lot of people. And so, yeah, that Jonathan and Nancy scene was really strong. The Stephen Dustin stuff was like I thought Steve really put. It's kind of weird.

Like Steve's like going back to season one. Steve's like really harsh this time. Like really harsh. Yeah. And got it to a point where I'm like, I don't know. I feel like you should say sorry. A little bit. You got to cross the line a little bit here, man.

Yeah, I think that was, yeah, it's a great scene because obviously he's kind of instigating that in a lot of ways. And then they both do it to an extent to each other. And it is like, as a bloodletting certainly and as, you know, sort of a boiling over of tension, I thought all that stuff was super duper gripping. And yeah, I mean, like a lot of hurt comes out of that. But I thought the way that they guided that to the ultimate conclusion of like, no, I can't go through this again. You can't die. Yeah.

all that was really potent when he was about to do exactly what Eddie would have done or yeah something akin to yeah some heroically foolish act or something like that yeah because a lot of the funny fun part about their dynamic is that these two by all accounts shouldn't be this close of friends yeah totally they're so different in their life their personalities what their interests are age and yet like they love each other and need each other and so I like the way they were illicit that and it's kind of bold for them to go in a direction for this final season where they mine the drama out of that friendship because we've never had like a drama with their friendship yeah it's always been fun yeah it's always like a respite from a lot of other things yeah it's usually like an endearing back and forth and like yeah we get it and this time instead of just repeating that and actually kind of play fire with the audience a little bit by having it be kind of messed up Because, like, I'm not, I understand why Steve would be, because there's that part of it, like, well, Steve has a point, it's just the manner in which you delivered it. It's kind of the best up part.

Like, you sound really insensitive and cold-hearted. And not like, it doesn't make me dislike Steve. I understand why when people are hurt, they say hurtful things, even if there's, like, some truth behind it, you know? Yeah, it's like to truly get through to you and to get this conversation meaningfully rolling, even if that's not really like. what I logically came into this to try and do. Yeah, it's like sometimes you just need to, you know, toss the first brick. Yeah.

Surprisingly, the Max and Holly stuff is like pairing them up is a dynamic. I don't think anyone saw coming from when we entered this season. And somehow that has been one of the smart choices here because you can't just have dynamics that we're aware of. You've got to mix it up. And to give this random new dynamic. And on top of that, too, we were, I think we misspoke last time that Holly, like, grew up and turned into this person. But that's a completely different actor.

I learned that, yeah, that they cast a different person. I just assumed because that's what they always do. Yeah, damn. It's a good match. But she's so good. Like, to make you care about Holly this much is really good. That final scene and the concern for her danger. and sometimes I met with

and they're doing shows like this or sequels that you wait a long time for and they're focusing on people that I'm like, I don't give a shit about this person. Go back to the people I came here for. Sometimes I'm met with that feeling, you know? And I know Holly's kind of been around the entire time, but she's never really been like a focal point character,

like the focus. And for the amount of focus they give her, I'm surprised. And a lot of the testament, I think, really goes to her as an actor because she is so, damn good that I really care about her a lot and actually infusing her

is the closest to kind of reminding me of the kids when they were in the first season you know what I mean? Just having that like super youthful smart precocious child who's capable and growing has to become an adult like quickly to get shit done. Yeah I want to yeah and to give

everyone's been through so much stuff now so it's like it's nice to behold through a fresh set of eyes again to re-establish those stakes. And yeah, like, that plot line and how we pay off getting Max back into her body at this point because we only have two episodes left of the show. It's crazy to think about. Yeah, like, it feels... That's wild.

Yeah. There's only, like, four more hours left at this show. Not even. It's probably like three hours. There's only like three more hours for Dr. Kay to become a character. so they're like numerous hours because it's not perfect I'll tell you it's not perfect

there's a couple of things that I'm like I really hope they somehow make it worthwhile with a few people and I'll talk about them later yeah to close that I do like yeah with with Max you know she's in jeopardy she's in limbo there's all sorts of like

at the back of your mind you're like we must get her back right and yeah I think the long game of that has been nice and I do like this sort of puzzle of it all and the, you know, little ways in which, okay, we involve Derek and we got all these other little kids here. And, you know, meanwhile, Will's tapping in and there's like, there's overlap slightly and then the probing it like, okay, what is this safe haven memory? What do we do about this? How to, there's got to be something out here and the thing with the lens cap coming back and discovering, again, it's

adding like little layers of mystery while also giving you a payoff because it's like, oh, this weird memory that's in Henry's mind and it must be traumatic but it also must be tied to how he became this way in the first place and it also follows the logic of the dream stuff and then to finally be back here after we saw her almost get there early on in the season and the cloud you know whipped away and then yeah for her to have to empower holly one more time and to remind holly of mike's speech and it's not like the most you know crazy idea it's a well-trodden idea but I do like a scene like that where someone's like I messed up all these different things and then someone has to be like yeah yeah but you actually took action and like even though you want to and you were afraid and you all you had all your normal you feelings you did Holly the heroic stuff and you can do it again you know this is a really lovely you know in a story about darkness versus light and all sorts of inversions and perversions of you know the right way of things the nice yeah thematic flourish to get them both back and then to cut to black on the, you know,

heart rate monitor is nice. Yeah. Yep. Vicky and Robin, you know, I'm kind of surprised by the amount of... Because Robin is like one of the most... When I pull back,

I'm so fascinated by what they do with Robin. Because Robin was introduced in three and she fortunately was really like a character that people really liked. Yeah. Because that could get killed off. Yeah. It could have gone really bad, honestly.

like hey we're gonna like put off Steve and Dustin with this this new character and fortunately she clicked really well with the show and she clicks but then in season four I don't is like the poorest choice of words but like three they made her really smart

like I'm gonna like decode Russian and all this shit and she's like this one of the smarter ones and then in four she's like I just can't stop talking and the stupidest shit just comes out of my mouth and that's kind of my character this season you know and then five they're like doing some type of blend of that like oh we're getting scenes where she's really smart and then sees where she doesn't like stop talking yeah yeah yeah she's still when they balance it out that seems to be like the best sweet spot for the charm of the yeah it's like season four she's more just like i'm neurodivergent yeah and and yeah it's like when she's in situations that can call upon her skills and stuff like that when they're doing all the rigging up the pumpkin and then the demigorian and you know we're turning the dial and all that and even her and the hospital like yeah I like even the squawk is sort of becoming a better motif of the season itself and and yeah it is interesting the way to ebb and flow but I like Vicki's great yeah yeah

that was a really sweet back and forth because obviously like how could you it's it's easy to forget in this show like not everybody has seen the extent of everything so you would still have these situations where you're like I can't just say what we've been doing because obviously that would sound insane and to be in the hospital and having this whole like you know, oh, you're going through withdrawal, you're on drugs, you know, is a very funny. And I'm glad that we didn't stretch that out too long. You know, it's taking care of pretty quick, and that's enough for me on a conflict like that. But it was nice to check in just with that relationship, and Vicky as a character, too.

Yeah. It's an easy, those kinds of characters can easily fall by the way. I thought, Joyce. Joyce? I thought she had one of the best scenes she's had in all. like she's getting some of the best things she's had in a while this whole season but that scene where she's lamenting to hopper and they're sharing the kinship of failing as a parent together

I thought that was like one of her best scenes she's had in a very long time becoming a little emotional actually I thought that was like really beautiful so a lot of this stuff and and yeah the reveal of the fucking wormhole is like kind of gratifying and cool and like how the hell you're gonna wrap this guy you got fucking Kay who's like trying to duplicate okay, this is a project, and then you got the whirls of a whole new season now. What if this is all going to ultimately

culminate finally in the Cully spin. Oh, yeah. It's all leading to a new spin-off starring Culley. Well, okay, so to go into some things I'm still like not fully hitting for me, when Cawley was explaining everything, I love that sinister reveal of all the pregnant. Like, it's so

eerie. It's so gross. It's endless. In a way that, like, logically doesn't quite make sense, but also is just such a great visual. Yeah. Like, it's, it feels... Endless hallway. Yeah, it was so off-putting in a way that... That's, like, a good plot exposition

reveal moment that truly fit and it was effective, and you're like, oh, damn, that is messed up. The thing, though, is I feel like everything with them is just that without much as much impact you know like 11 gets that really cool scene when they're going to the gate and she's using powers most of 11 and even collie and hopper most of it hopper i feel like is getting repeat beats that we've already gone through with him

especially when it comes to his relationship and how he is as a father to 11 like a lot of that feels kind of repetitive and i wish they leaned a little bit more into this you know how he was in russia and now he's back and then what kind of person is he now what's been that development like why is he just like sad

you know like like lean into it explored a little bit or have that be a like set that up early on like is he distant as a boyfriend with Joyce what's he like as a boyfriend

like all these things that I feel like they kind of skipped over that would have probably made this season and moments like I'm ringing dynamite with me to potentially off myself you know and things like that

that I feel like a lot of their stuff is getting chocked I'm going to just straightforward plot. And the things that are really effective are the stuff where they slow down to have rich character scenes and things that advance it in a way

and don't just feel like they're repeating. And it's kind of strange as 11 and Hopper are my favorite characters and I find them to be two of the least interesting people in this particular section. Yeah. Like I'm always there when they're there because I'm like, it's them.

And every season, they're my favorite. and so it especially is kind of I'm especially a little bit more harsh on it because they're my favorite people a lot of people tend to go for when I say them they might include like Steve in that and I love Steve

11 and Hopper to me are like the part of the show to me and what they're doing here and like it seems like all the opportunities are like they're teamed up all you know like I get it after the amount of tribulation of trust like now they're actually teamed up and working together yet so much of the writing around them

just feels like plot it feels like a loop because with hopper right now it feels mostly like okay death wish plus i'm overprotective for a good reason but i also know i'm being overprotective and i should just let 11 you know have a little bit more autonomy without me trying to control it and it's we've done that like a and we've done that a lot and we're still doing it and it doesn't make sense because obviously what they're doing is like the most unprecedented life and death shit but at the same time yeah they do

feel the least like we've gotten to I feel like many of the characters this season they have made a point to go we're going to dip into these guys perspective and have some real intimate moments even if it's just like

a standout scene for like Jonathan and Nancy this is like one scene terrific scene and then like you know and then we move on to other stuff and with Hopper and 11 I feel like I'm always kind of observing them from a distance and even in the scenes where we are just in the two of their

perspective I don't really feel like I'm immersing into perspective or yeah or like you said their inner life what's been the effect of all this what's it's weird they almost feel like they're not really able to check in with being characters right now because they're just like so on the mission

yeah and even when they're getting a moment too it's still I don't know maybe it'll change there's still two more episodes so I don't want to harp on this for too long like that's just the concern right now and I'm hoping a flip happens I'm hoping that they pay that off

because this is because I'm late and I'm also not like yeah like five or like six episodes in like come on despite the length even I'm like yeah we're six episodes into this it seems like I feel like we got some intimate time with hopper at 11 I feel like they ran out of

juicy stuff for them to do with them because it's kind of like they expel information even when they're sometimes the emotional scenes with them seem like beats they're just hitting because i got to hit it like when he's injured and he's talking about sarah to you know in volume one scenes like that for some reason are just not clicking as hard as i feel like they ought to and maybe that's just our feelings again i'll still wait though to find out they have the least descript to me like every every other set of characters that I can think of who are like focal this season have gotten like some striking moment that has pulled me further into them and I am kind of apathetic about hopper and 11 right now

yeah well I think the the thing about what makes stranger things great especially in the earlier seasons and I don't even think four lost it like four went bigger with its visuals and stuff it's the fact that the show is intimate and I feel like this season five even though I think these last who are so good. Five overall has lost some of that intimate touch in favor of world doom stuff, which I get, you know,

I understand. That's why I think a lot of that should have been a setup at the beginning. That way it, you know, kind of bleeds throughout the rest, just like the other seasons. We'll see. And Collie is the most interesting part of their storyline. I thought her stuff, as she's, you know,

giving her monologues or talking to 11 in the church or her various moments. I thought were striking, and it's nice to see. I don't know how people are responding to this, obviously, but I'm happy for that actor to get to reclaim this character in what I hope is a slightly more agreeable way for everybody, because I think she's doing good

work. She's doing good. Again, though, I'm hoping they make some type of real dynamic out of that. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, for sure. Something a little bit more rich to mind that goes a little bit further beyond I know her better than you And, you know, you're lying.

There's the same thing we always tell me. But the other part really want to give credit to is Jimmy Campbellbauer. Yeah. Him as Henry is so good. Because in last season, when you see him as Henry, they haven't put all their cards out on the table yet that this is really Beckna. You know, so it's kind of cool to go back and watch that performance when you know that information. And now watching him where he's just Henry out in the open, we're all well aware,

he's actually doing something very different. And he gets to play all different shades of him. Henry that are all versions of like control, manipulator, Helbet power, then he gets to play Vecna. So watching him do all three and showing these differences as a Henry, I think he's

absolutely excelling at it and he is truly captivating to watch. I like watching him as Henry more than I do as Vecna. I think he's so good. And I'm happy you get a good amount of both and I know he's been out here documented as like, you know, I'm sure they beef it, but you know, I know he developed his Vecna voice

and it's kind of cool to hear the spectrum of that because, you know, as much as you see an actor in their just normal form in a role like this, part of your brain goes like, I bet this season you didn't want to spend as much time all made up. But at the same time, I think the way they

choose to portray him as one or the other has been very effective and showcases his range. Yeah. And yeah, as much as I wasn't crazy about the Mr. What's-it stuff on this side, on the, you know, earlier side of the

reveal fence when that was still semi a mystery once you come to find that's Henry you're like oh that's what I thought but now on the other side of that getting to watch him embody Mr. What's it now that we know is really fun and engrossing and creepy so yeah it's like I like the choice better on this side of the wall and with other you know stuff to wonder about now and in the back of my mind as much as a lot of this is his creation

and you know his will that he's trying to enact you know it still leaves me with certain questions about like the nature of this universe and the physics of it and how and why and chicken and egg and all that stuff and so you know i'm back in that mode in that mode with this show where i'm starting to try and decode things again which is fun you know for sure for sure uh will it's probably the last thing well will and mike a little bit like i i like was the news episode it's weird because i think this is the best fin wolf far we've got in a in a very long time. You know, not since, like, season two stuff. Has he been this good? They've given him, like, a lot of dialogue, a lot of scenes, and it seems like they really went out of her way, perhaps a little too much, to not make him just be 11's

boyfriend. Yes. Because that's all he really is in season three and four. Like, that's his whole character. He's 11's boyfriend. And this season, they seem to go so out. out of their way that he doesn't even seem concerned about it.

Yeah, that's funny. Because he doesn't even concerned about his sister than much, honestly. He's got so much to deal with right in the room. He's got object permanence issues. You know, if you're not right here in front of him, he's not thinking about it, too. I mean, with Finn of Wolfhardt being

one of the breakout stars of the show, obviously, and one of early on, the sort of main focal characters that people gravitated toward, I think what's been cool, especially about this season for him is, and these couple episodes especially,

he's like really good support in a way. Like he's a really good supporting character. And so even if he's, even if here, as a five and six, I'm thinking back and going like, oh, Mike didn't have like tons to do, he did have some impactful scenes and moments.

And I think that just his presence as, again, somebody who can empower and encourage and support the people around him and throw an extra hand on whatever is like a necessary part of any operation and it's like a lovely way to keep the sort of heart of the

friend group thing alive because it's one of those things you're in it's like the buffy conundrum of like not everyone can be a special thing and you know some people are you know on the more normal side of the spectrum just doing what they can Mike and Lucas definitely fall into that category Dustin's got at least his

elevated intellect but yeah I really like Mike as an empowering support character as of this season. And Will getting, I mean, he didn't get much

to do in six, but it was kind of, because the cliffhanger if all you've won is Will Unleashed. Yeah. I like the idea that Joyce got carried away.

She was hasten that choice. I was here going like, dude, he'd just like learned it up. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's like, same, dude. This is sick,

but like, let's not bite off the whole thing just because we learned we have teeth. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's a little quick. But, you know, desperate times. Yeah, exactly.

Desperate times. And I like that Joyce is like, oh, shit, I kind of like push this a little fast. And at least you acknowledge it. Yeah. And the moments with Will, like, that was a really cool scene when he does go into Vecna's mind and like breaks his leg and all that stuff. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, that limp is still going with him. So I really like that a lot.

Yeah, it was very cool. There, I do kind of wish the whole thing with the spy stuff. was it does feel like they have a lot of ideas they had that they're trying to cram into eight episodes, you know? Yep. There's a little too much going on because, like, they just introduced that spy thing. You kind of forget about that spy thing,

and then they wrap up that spy thing. You know? And they're like, oh, we got to get the demo dog. We got to do, you can't do the same thing about demo dogs. Got to check that box don't win. That feels, yeah, it feels so much because, yeah, Will's turn is like such a huge boost

that then you feel like, oh, no, if he's going to be a, spy, this is going to be devastating. And then, yeah, it ultimately just adds like an extra little scoop of stakes onto an already moving trades. You know, which was a good sequence, the demo dogs in the hospital.

Like, it was intense. And it was fun. It was a fun, like, a little Jurassic Park tribute at times. Yeah, it's weird because all the stuff about the runtime, the meme of like, every one of these episodes are going to be three hours long. I am kind of taken aback that they're not.

Yeah, I kind of wish they were. Because I'm like, even though I'm like, that's unprecedented for, you know, TV right now, at the same time, I'm like, I could see how you could accomplish a lot of what you've set out to do here. And not that they, you know, this has been pretty solid in a lot of ways, not every way, but in a lot of ways for a final season for what it is. But I am sort of sitting here reminding myself again. And, you know, I still have kind of faith that the last episode will be at least wholly feature. length, whether that means 90 minutes or two hours, I don't know. I heard it was like, I heard it was two hours. I heard it was not as long as the finale

for four, but it is like, like close to. It's 315. Yeah. It's Avatar. It's not for four's a little excessive. But I don't know. Like, even then, you know, you still have to have installments feel appropriately

balanced and sized and needed and all that stuff. And so not that they can't do it, but it is getting to that wire where I'm like, there's still a bunch of stuff here. And we only have, yeah, ostensibly maybe three hours left of storytelling so but we'll see we'll see overall though it's still like still like still fucking stranger things it still feels like a blast still feels like a vent TV still feels a really enjoyable trajectory I'm excited to check out the next one and I certainly

feel confident saying there's more pros than cons sure it's just that this time the cons kind of stand out a little bit more just because of the circuit it's like I wonder if we were just watching this and we had no idea it's the end how we would feel about some of this stuff I think I feel I mean, probably. We had like gripes of a three, like gripes with four. It's just like for some reason now, like, oh, well. I guess they're kind of like shining a little bit more now. I think the weight of the gripes hits harder because it is not just another season.

It is the final season. It's like some of the storytelling stuff would still be, yeah, things you could nitpick or gripe about. But I feel like you don't have the ability now to be like, well, okay, if this thread's anemic, they'll probably just develop it next season. And that's probably the point. You know, now it's sort of like, oh, God, I hope you can get it all. Yeah. You know.

But good shit. It's on an upward trajectory. Well, guys, we're going to aim to get you the next one. Karen. Tomorrow. Karen was great. Karen got a badass moment. Karen got a moment.
