Starting point is 00:00:08 T'envee a fruade celebrate to be able to have the age legal for consuming
Starting point is 00:00:12 the alcohol This week's video is sponsored by Acorns the money app that makes it simple and cheap
Starting point is 00:00:19 to make small yet significant investments All right guys We watched we got exactly
Starting point is 00:00:29 20 minutes to talk about this. I show we watched Finding Dory. Thanks, Preper, for it to have these highlights. We know Disney's been a little bit of a pain to get these videos public and you guys been killing it. Thank you for the consistency and the quality. It's really hard to find that when we're dealing in a volume business.
Starting point is 00:00:47 All right. Well, Aaron, my man, what are your first impressions here? I really liked it. It was a lot of fun. It had surprisingly a lot of heart into it. And also really, really funny. Was it the most
Starting point is 00:01:01 realistic movie? No, but you know, it doesn't matter when we're having fun. As long as you get your themes across, your characters having their arcs, you feel touched by the emotion of what's happening, I think that you can forgive some things, though I will say
Starting point is 00:01:17 I feel like it was just a little longer than need to be. At least that last bit, you know, it'll seem like they're going to, I feel like the whole truck part, though fun didn't really add to the narrative. It was just kind of there as an extra little gag. But overall, I thought it was really sweet.
Starting point is 00:01:35 And, yeah, it's surprising that this one is not as talked about as finding Nemo is. Because I don't think it's, yeah, it's pretty strong, I would say, overall. And I think that they are a lovely pair of films to be viewed for your home entertainment. What do you think, man? I think there's things I kind of prefer about this. So I'm not really sure what that is. but I gave to me by towards the end it's a little bit of like the hijinks feel a bit repetitive of you know rescue oh my god they got left behind rescue oh they got left behind it does become a little bit like all right this is getting kind of redundant and then after a while the stakes starts to lose its stakes because of the redundancy and to clarify and even though we said during the reaction I could already hear comments being like I know neither one of us expect realism out of an animated movie of course not this is Pixar it's Disney doesn't like it's animated like the the idea of human real
Starting point is 00:02:37 world physics is like never really ever applied in an animated property it's that when coming off of finding Nemo the the line and how far they would push the believability of what the fish are capable of doing they kind of build into that so that way you're still kind of lost in the world and the rules they've established like i don't know enough about fish but i know enough to be like it's probably not like a likelihood that they could do this with the physicality or the strength to do these things right so yeah i mean it does embrace its lunacy a lot more embraces the ridiculousness a lot more and the heightened imagination undoubtedly so yeah it was a tidy bit of like a readjustment in my head because they do it so early on
Starting point is 00:03:34 in this film like around like the 25th or whenever they get to the aquarium it it suddenly slingshot into terrain of like a me question like can fish do they have the prowess to do that but but uh it never pulled me out to the point it never pulled me out in a way that made me get lost in like what you said the heart the emotion the fun yeah and the the overall impact like they have a lot of new characters in here and i liked a lot of the new characters i like destiny he's great a lot of fun what's the echo location with bailey yeah like bailey that those two personalities being uh linked to dory's past i think really does help um hank as their next curmudgeon character to pair up with dory whatever fears and traumas he had about the ocean i like those kind of characters you can feel the
Starting point is 00:04:28 heart underneath i wonder why they had given seven legs but that was part of the fun of the of the commentary that we were happening is there's a consistent theme here about overcoming limiting beliefs and you know the i saw a documentary trailer for something recently that is about that people with disabilities who play in sports and i i liked watching that documentary trailer just a few days ago and then seeing this reminding me of that of like oh man so much of the time we we base our abilities off of our circumstances or our own belief system and so much about this is about accepting who you are accepting that whatever people have called your disability or a limitation as a way that you can
Starting point is 00:05:14 like overcome that and do something even more and that can be hard for some people it can be inspiring for others to hear and hard for some other people to hear because it could pray all people's defense mechanisms or it can inspire people who feel like they need something to overcome and they've been selling themselves a certain type of story or narrative especially based off what other people might slam into them and I loved like the overall messaging that's kind of why I'm and I'm like there's elements I prefer over to because I'm impressed on a on a sequel level like when we right at the intro we were going I make a story about door like I was actually kind of cynical about it and I'm like how would you possibly do a story about dory like the whole gimmick is she
Starting point is 00:05:57 forgets and the like seeing her as a supporting character makes total sense yeah and they don't really dive too like her heart was there in the first one and there is a hints of the sadness and tragedy but it mainly is like hey it's funny that she forgets and this one they managed to make her a full three-dimensional character where I was really rooting for her and I really cared about her. I mean, you were saying during it about Ellen DeGeneres' performance. I mean, you wanted to talk a little bit more about that? Yeah, she was great.
Starting point is 00:06:29 I think she added some dynamics to while what was happening on screen. You know, she's able to add those notes of things while she was going on in the film. Sorry, something's happened in my pocket. I would ignore that for a little bit. But yeah, I think that she was able to, you know, still have that levity. her comic timing is amazing but also the fact that she is able to have the the pathos as well you really buy the fact that she is you know this lost fish this this person for like of a better term who is not really grounded in you know having a sense of self or a sense of belonging
Starting point is 00:07:15 and even when we get to that place at the end where she's like hyperventilating and you It's just like the all is lost moment. You really, really believe that. I'm like, man, I can only imagine her in the booth. Like, this is something she had to prep for, or she just, like, brought that out of her? I don't know. But I'm very curious to see, yeah, if there's any behind the scenes for this movie.
Starting point is 00:07:37 But something I will say in addition to that, because I think the, I like the commentary, you know, she worked better as a supporting character because she added a nice balance and dynamic to Marlon. I don't think that the with the reversal of now us finding Dory that Marlon Nemo worked as well no Yeah I had the same thought I had a safe thought please continue yeah they were They were kind of an afterthought and they were mainly here because they were in the first one
Starting point is 00:08:08 And you know for as prevalent as Dory was in that first Or as prevalent as Nemo was in that first movie I don't think Nemo really added anything to this movie and Marlin didn't really change much either so it was interesting that you know we we had them here granted they're their hijinks and their parts of the film were fun but they were really kind of a non-consequential to the story overall but that said you know it's it's still fun and they still played into that theme of family of found family and and both found family with people that we you know find along the way in our lives but
Starting point is 00:08:46 also you know coupled with found family literally finding your family of blood and those two families come together was uh it was really cool to watch on screen i will add to does i agree with the the lessening of impact because my mind started as you were talking my mind did start trailing into well if they weren't in there i bet there'd be a lot of people complain like why weren't they in this movie you know so it's like kind of a lose lose situation it's like all they really could have done is maybe written a better narrative for them but the intention of the themes absolutely aware talking about i really like marlin's arc though when he thinks dory be because he's he's so critical
Starting point is 00:09:28 of dory and you know he's he's snappy he's a he's a curmudgeon i like to say and i when he does think dory it feels so sincere and that being able to think someone is is honestly a vulnerable thing to do a lot of times people will be like i'm an honest person and then you might hear that Sometimes when someone's really honest, it's like they chalk up being, Taylor Swift has a brilliant line called, she says, casually cruel in the name of being honest. And there's another version of that where it's like, well, sometimes being positive, a lot of times being positive and being grateful is also incredibly vulnerable and hard for some people to do, to think about the positive, to think about the gratitude. So when he came around to trying to solve this by going, what would Dory do instead of looking down on? dory and talking down on dory because of her limitations he embraced the good about her and then actually thanked her so when he thanked her i was really touched by that and it's it's kind of an
Starting point is 00:10:30 important lesson i think a lot of people kind of overlook reject nation you ever look back and realize how little you actually learned about money growing up for me like many of you was always start investing when you're young no one ever told me how and honestly for the longest time i was too overwhelmed to even try and that's why i'm grateful A, grateful because I already used this product, and B, I'm grateful because... Starting point is 00:12:13 And yes, a lot of it could have definitely been finessed because I would forget they're in the movie and I kind of didn't care sometimes when I find myself being like I'm way more interested I'm super invested in this other thing that's going on yeah and at the same time it's like on the flip side I remember in finding Nemo um like the characters in the tank
Starting point is 00:12:31 being a little bit enjoyable but I was nowhere near as interested as I was when as opposed to when they were exploring the ocean with Nemo and um and Dory a Marlin and Dory in the first one yeah so that
Starting point is 00:12:47 I mean, I guess it's hard for them to tell, like, there are B stories to make it, like, equally impactful. And I'm sure not everyone would agree. Again, it's not like, don't like it or do like it. It's like there are shades I like and there are shades I don't. So, yeah, that's about it. But the animation, too, is, like, unbelievably refined. Yeah, it was gorgeous, especially those flourishes they added to, you know,
Starting point is 00:13:08 enhance the three aspects of it. We maybe really want to check this out in 3D. I don't know if they have that available anymore, especially with the death of physical media as we know it but yeah if it's available somewhere i would love to check this out with the 3d as it intended that's true actually it did really pop in this one coupled with the beauty of the animation and i really like those moments they allowed to let live with you know when she first entered the the cylinder tank and how colorful it was and how many fish there were and also the the different techniques in in filming capturing perspective when we followed
Starting point is 00:13:44 dory's whole journey out of the tank and then into the ocean you know and it's all from her her eyes that was an incredible sequence and yeah i think they did a really good job of of capturing that um overall and yeah i wouldn't be mad at the third one let's do finding marlin let's see what his journey is yeah on that 3d note a lot of times when we watch some of these movies and you can see that this was made dark for a 3d movie a 3d time it's super distracting um weirdly it actually adds something different here that because uh just opposed to the first one like there's a it seemed like it would still be intentional even without the 3d at times like it actually i actually liked the way it's shot a lot and it didn't it didn't like bother me or annoy me or feel like
Starting point is 00:14:39 this is an outdated thing because they clearly shot this for 3d I've seen some other movies for sure here that have the exact opposite room like man these 3D shots are annoying but that wasn't the case here and it actually made me like want to like you watch it in 3D and I would like a finding Marlin that would be nice
Starting point is 00:14:56 right or do it on the humans who lost their job and this truck incident now they're out for revenge to fight them or let's see what what Hank's journey is because we got a very small glimpse in the fact that he lost his leg and he was very adamant about going back at the ocean we never really found out what that was that happened to him for him to not want to be there in the first place but dory you know being like we need you out there he's like okay yeah so
Starting point is 00:15:22 you know that that was a nice little arc i kind of had that feeling he's going to end up with them by the end of the story but yeah i wonder what um where his origins were that that was a point of interest for me i liked all the inspiring themes of follow your intuition and follow your heart and gore having that disability with her mind she only has has her heart to lean on and trusting her instincts there again another very important lesson i think to instill something that was carried over from the first one but magnified this time around i like how this didn't just feel like repetitive and then the dual meaning of finding dory like they're literally finding dory and you're also finding dory's past and dory's finding the strength
Starting point is 00:16:03 within her like there's a a multitude so there's a lot that i do actually prefer and find stronger I do think the first one's probably first one I think is more cohesive for sure and a narrative yeah like like it like is a solid thing but this is pretty freaking close to the first and there's also things that are yeah that I do prefer over the first that's funny funnier too it's a funnier one for sure no another thing I really liked about this one is you know with sequels they have the thing of like you got to go bigger than the last one and I think the way that they were able to adhere to that by taking the outside of the ocean from a tank in a dentist office to a whole aquarium was really interesting. I like that sequence where they were in the touch pool and just capturing their perspective of how terrifying that is to be a fish or to be a starfish.
Starting point is 00:16:56 Just enhancing that fear from the first one or what it's like to interact with humans and showing how giant they are. and you know just like the giant arms pounding down into the sand and grabbing you and like taking you away from your oxygen and then putting you back in i'm like oh my god fish really go through it man humans put fish through the ringer and just other aquatic life so so it does make you rethink a little bit of the experience yeah yeah totally i'm like i don't think i want to do that anymore i've been in the aquariums in a minute but yeah i'm gonna leave them i'm leave those dudes alone they're traumatized out there. I'm like, you know what? Keep your hands. Keep your hands. Keep your hands to yourself. That's what I feel. Yeah. What about you guys? You're going to keep your hands to yourself? Leave your thoughts down below. Do you prefer finding Dory over finding Nemo? Do you have a preference? Does it really matter? Just rate it. Let us know your thoughts. Do you want a third one?
