Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood Full Movie Reaction Watch Along:   / thereelrejects   Directed by special-effects artist John Carl Buechler (Troll, Ghoulies III: Ghoulies Go to College), Friday the 13th Part VII stars Lar Park Lincoln as Tina Shepard (Knots Landing, House II: The Second Story), Kane Hodder as Jason Voorhees (Hatchet, Jason X), Kevin Spirtas as Nick (Days of Our Lives, The Hills Have Eyes Part II), Terry Kiser as Dr. Crews (Weekend at Bernie’s, Tammy and the T-Rex), and Susan Blu as Amanda Shepard (Jem, The Transformers). After the reaction, Jackie & Paige discuss Kane Hodder’s physical performance, John Carl Buechler’s practical effects, Tina’s “Jason versus Carrie” concept, the movie’s heavily censored kills, that bizarre lake ending, and how The New Blood compares with Jason Lives. Starting point is 00:01:16 It's called The New Blood. Ooh, I'm excited for that. What does that mean fresh campers? Fresh campers, maybe? Or I guess it's the old blood. Well, we just... Yeah, it is actually. the old blood. We did have campers for the first time in the last one, correct? We did. Yeah? I'm feeling
Starting point is 00:01:35 really excited. I had so much fun with the last one. Once again, I just think that we will call, was it five that I hated? I think it was five. Yes, it was. I feel like that was just an accidental blip and I'm right back. I'm right back. I'm having so much fun. Agreed. There was still a lot of really fun things about five, though. The porta-potty song, come on. Fine, whatever. I like that Jason is undead, and I'm excited to see him get undead again. He's coming back. All right. Are you ready? I'm ready. Let's go. Starting point is 00:03:00 I found this one in. the lobby and I put it on house called. I think it was a chair decoration. It was a chair decoration, but now it's my back decoration. Page, what did you think? I actually really liked this one. I was surprised that you didn't. Really? Yeah. I loved it. I love this whole element of another supernatural force. I mean, I think I said it one or two ago. I was getting a little stale for me. just like the teens in the woods. And I love, I mean, I think that having, there was an evil dead that did a similar thing where a girl,
Starting point is 00:03:39 I mean, I guess it wasn't really that similar, but there was a girl that was like going through a drug withdrawals in the cabin in the woods, and it made so much sense to me that people wouldn't really believe her because she was detoxing in the woods, basically. And for this girl to kind of be in a traumatic state, and people not really believe her really worked for me in the supernatural, like her having these abilities also. It makes sense for the world to me because now we're on the seventh Jason.
Starting point is 00:04:11 Why wouldn't we have some psychic telekinesis things happening too? I enjoyed that element so much more. I also think the acting did get a smidge better. I really do. I liked the music too. I really liked the music. zombie dad at the end was a little. Zombie dad at the end was a little much.
Starting point is 00:04:31 I don't know what it was about this one because I, I mean, it's been fun like all of them, but I think that in terms of all seven that we've seen so far, this is not one that I'm really, I think that I would rewatch. Really? And I don't think, like, the Carrie thing and the telekinesis, I think that that's fun. I think that's totally in world. And I think that that was a swing that it made a lot of sense for them to go in at the time.
Starting point is 00:04:58 and that's not what bothers me. I think that I just, it was something about the script felt weaker to me. I didn't care too much about the characters. Yeah, we still didn't get to know them a whole lot. We didn't get to know him a whole lot. And like there was no one that was really like extremely likable. You know, like even in, I'm thinking back to like, um,
Starting point is 00:05:21 what's the one with the twins? Oh. The one with the twins. Like we had that moment where that one guy is dancing really weird. And I'm like, oh, I really like him. I care about him. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:30 And like he finally gets late. I think that's like three or four. I think it's four. I mean, yeah. These movies are very filled with pretty despicable characters. Yeah, they are. Like no one. But I think that's also so that you root for their deaths.
Starting point is 00:05:42 I think so maybe. But I don't know though because I still root for them even if there's something like, like the characters were just bland. It's not even that I didn't like them as people, like, which I didn't. But also like they were just bland. I was a little bored. Yeah. I can understand that.
Starting point is 00:05:58 And that's what I mean. Like, I am like a little bit like, okay, it's another friend group in the, in the woods. And that's why I don't know. I was ready for this chain. But you're right. I only really cared about her and her mom at the end. And Nick, I guess. Yeah, I guess.
Starting point is 00:06:14 I agree about the another friend group in the woods thing. But it's like, even with five, like they had the swing of it being the inpatient care. And I'm like, that worked for me. What happens? Where were we in six? I know. I'm like, six was when we finally had the campers show up. Oh, that was fun. And her dad was the cop in town. Yeah, we liked six a lot. Okay, now that we're doing, um, the series as well, and my brain's like,
Starting point is 00:06:41 blah, blah, blah, um, I don't know. Yeah. Right, right. I was like, what are you talking about? Yeah, we are doing the series also. Because they don't even like, we're doing the Crystal Lake, um, episodics. Oh, can we say that yet? I mean, yeah, but they're not yet, right? I don't know. Maybe don't use that editors. I don't know. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:07:03 We'll ask Alex. We'll ask Alex. Anyways, um, what was I going to say? I was going to say? And the last one, what did I say that six was my favorite? Like some of them just like leaned more into the camp in a way that really worked for me and was super, super fun. This one I just, yeah, I just felt a little. There was no mention of camp, huh?
Starting point is 00:07:24 No, no, no, I mean like camp. Oh, oh, like campy. This one I just felt like, I was like a little bored. Like I think it was trying to be too grounded, but the acting and the script were kind of bad. So unless it like leans into camp, then I'm like it didn't really get. This one didn't work for me, not really a favorite. Felt like I felt like a lot of that thing was better than this, which is crazy. Little better.
Starting point is 00:07:48 You didn't think some of the performances were a little more grounded? I really did not like the acting of the main girl. So that was really difficult. It's okay, honey. She's not watching. She might be. She just looked like Amy smart to me. Or it could have been how she was directed.
Starting point is 00:08:03 I'm not sure. I'm not trying to slander, but it just really didn't work for me. I don't know. You also loved the last girl. I know. You really loved her. I really did. So yeah, this one, I think it might be my least favorite, guys.
Starting point is 00:08:15 Might be my second favorite. Oh, okay. Well, we're going to fight them. Well, no, I really love three, too. Do you want to get into some questions? Yeah. Kev B says, hey, hey. Hey, Jackie and Paige.
Starting point is 00:08:26 Hey, hey, Kempi. How wild is it that they decided to turn this into Carrie meets Friday the 13th? Did giving the final girl full-on telekinesis make the showdown with Jason way more fun? Or did it feel like it completely crossed the line into too much for the franchise? And then trivia really quick. Paramount actually spent the late 80s trying to get a Freddie versus Jason movie off the ground, but they had a brick wall trying to make a deal with New Line. Since they were dead set on running with a Jason versus Blank marketing angle,
Starting point is 00:08:51 they literally just swapped Freddy out for a psychic teenager and turned the whole thing Jason meets Carrie. Funny. I liked the showdown with the telekinesis. Yeah. The whole telekinesis, psychic powers, really worked for me. I think that that was also probably very popular at the time. I don't know if this is before after like poltergeist and stuff, but it was definitely
Starting point is 00:09:12 a trend of the times. Jaden Rhodes. Jaden Rhodes. Friday the 13th, Part 7. Carrie versus Jason. I'm curious if y'all expected this franchise to. take this turn and did the swing work for y'all in my opinion it works very well agreed jaden rhodes i agree but now i mean it really makes me so curious with all right we're keep we keep building we keep adding more
Starting point is 00:09:38 he's undead now he's fighting care like what's where are we going now yeah and obviously i know that we do have a way year to carry come out will you look i think carry was 19 i'm pretty sure it was first No. I know, but I want to know this one. This was Mosaic. Oh, yeah. Carrie came out in the 70s. Oh, yeah?
Starting point is 00:10:03 Oh, yeah, 76. Wow. So this was 10 years later. It was like 10 years later. It took them a while. But it was so popular. Wait, where am I? Where am I?
Starting point is 00:10:13 I don't know. You're in a different question thing. Well, it's because it looks cute. Oh, now they did. It's cute. Now they finally did. Are we supposed to be there or there? Oh, we can be here now.
Starting point is 00:10:24 Oh, I liked the other one. Oh, you did? I mean, I don't know. It just looked. Nice. This one. We did this one. Okay, perfect.
Starting point is 00:10:32 All right. Wait. Yes, we're on Dan. Oh, yeah, but they skipped Jamie. Oh. Here, so I'll do Jamie. Uh-huh. All right.
Starting point is 00:10:39 Jamie Gore writes in and says, if you didn't realize how unstoppable undead Jason is, you definitely do now. So one of their original ideas was to have Jason versus Carrie. Just curious how, oh, really? Like, real Carrie. Oh, that would have been cool. How different that you think that would have been.
Starting point is 00:10:55 And do you think that could have worked? As in like Cissy Spacex? Is this movie? I don't think so because I like the ending of Carrie. I like that she dies. And I get that I know. You have you seen that?
Starting point is 00:11:08 Yeah. But so does Jason. Why couldn't Carrie come back? I don't know. I don't like that. I'm like, keep Stephen King by himself. I think it's fun that we're going to get Freddy soon. But I don't, I'm not interested in that.
Starting point is 00:11:20 I don't know nothing about no Freddy. He's a nightmare? We don't know nothing about no Freddy. I see all the comments, guys. I am seeing. I will ask. I need to ask. I keep going home after we wrap and then I don't ask, but I'm going to ask, though.
Starting point is 00:11:35 Wait, what are you going to ask? About if we're going to do Friday. Or wait, we're doing Friday. If we're going to do Nightmare on Elm Street. Nightmare. We're on Dan. Dan Gein. Hi, Dan.
Starting point is 00:11:47 Friday of 13th, Part 7. Hi, Jackie and Paige. This movie was originally pissed. Wait, did you just read that one? No. Oh, it was originally pissed. pitched as Jason versus Carrie. They just couldn't secure the rights for Carrie.
Starting point is 00:12:01 Besides, Freddie, what other characters would you like to see Jason cross over with? Michael Myers. It doesn't that happen later, too? I have no fucking idea. Isn't there a Michael versus Jason versus Freddie? Like a... Is there? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:12:15 Because in my head there always is, but I don't know if that's like a sciop or something that I just like think that that exists, but it doesn't. I don't know. personally for me the the movies that really really messed with me when I was younger were scream and so I would love to see ghost face really yeah it's that just a guy yeah he would destroy him it would be a slaughter maybe isn't it isn't scream like a whole bunch of different people then so they could take it on hmm what other monsters are I don't know who else then besides oh that would be I mean, Pennywise would wipe the floor with Jason and Michael Myers.
Starting point is 00:13:00 Absolutely. I've only seen the first it. I didn't even see it. You would wipe the damn floor with them. I watched the two-part mini-serie made-for-TV miniseries. You need to watch the 2017 one. It's so fucking good. But, yeah, he'd wipe the floor, wipe the floor.
Starting point is 00:13:19 I don't know about, like, Freddie Krueger, I don't know your game yet, so I don't know yet. Yeah. So we don't, I don't know what's going on there. All right. Hesena Ali. Fun fact. Did you know that in 2013 a scuba diver built a life-size statue of Jason and is chained underwater at Crystal Lake in Trophy, Minnesota?
Starting point is 00:13:36 Amazing. It pays homage to Friday the 13th, Part 6 and Part 7 raised change to the bottom of Crystal Lake underwater. The images I saw online are terrifying. Oh, cool. We're looking them up right now. Is there Crystal Lake in Jersey? I don't think so. Show me to me.
Starting point is 00:13:59 Oh my God, he's so scary. That is hilarious. Oh, my God. Wait, he's so scary. Page. So funny. We should go. Literally, that could be us.
Starting point is 00:14:08 Field trip. Field trip. Field trip. Wow. That's the guy. Look how proud he is. How cute. This is awesome.
Starting point is 00:14:20 Yeah, this is great. What year did it go down there, I wonder? Um. 2013 it says 20 that's well that's like years after it looks really it looks better with time yeah yeah zang
Starting point is 00:14:33 2013 now so it's 13 years old that's amazing thank you thank you for that info that was awesome jskull hey jskull wait no
Starting point is 00:14:49 stephanie oh sorry Stephanie sorry Stephanie sorry Stephanie Hi, Stephanie. Hi, Jackie and Paige. You finally made it. Off the rails portion to the off the rails portion of the franchise. My question is now that the franchise has firmly established that supernatural is on the table.
Starting point is 00:15:07 What other superpowers slash supernatural stuff do you expect to see in the coming films? Laugh out loud. Especially if there is anything that would surprise you at this point to see Jason or someone else do not counting obvious. Freddie versus Jason. What am I expecting? What am I expecting? God. I wasn't expecting telekinesis.
Starting point is 00:15:31 I was definitely not expecting telekinesis. Well, now I'm like, what do I want? But that's not what the question is. I mean... Is there anything that would surprise you? What would surprise me? Okay. Maybe let's do some like...
Starting point is 00:15:44 Vampire. Yeah, let's do some like witchcraft stuff. That wouldn't surprise me. Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me either. But we're guessing where we think we're going, right? Yeah. I mean, telekinesis could be headed down that because it's like psychic canes. What was the guy calling it?
Starting point is 00:15:59 Psychokinesis. Telekinetic. No, but he used the word psychic in it also because she was seeing premonitions as well. I want to see a vampire. I want to see Michael Myers. I don't think I'm going to get that. I don't think I'm going to get either of those. Yeah, I'm ready for witches.
Starting point is 00:16:14 That's what I'd like to see. Yeah. I'd like witches as well. Witches would be awesome. Witches would be cool. Oogah, booga. J. Skull says, New Blood is right up there with part three
Starting point is 00:16:24 is one of my favorites of the franchise. Sorry. Loved the back and forth between Jason and Tina. It's almost like watching Godzilla go at it with Kong. For me, I thought it was one of the better stories plots in the series. Did you think it was too fantastical or did it strike a good balance between believable and fantasy? I think it strikes a great balance.
Starting point is 00:16:42 I just didn't think that where that balance landed was really engaging for me. Jackie hated it. I loved it. I didn't agree with you. I just didn't love it. I loved it. So do you think, did you think it was too fantastic?
Starting point is 00:16:55 Not at all. Okay, she loved it. I feel like we crossed the supernatural line a few movies ago. I think we crossed the supernatural line after like movie, in movie two.
Starting point is 00:17:04 I was ready. I mean, technically we didn't want. How long was he under Crystal Lake? Yeah, real. No, yeah, because he goes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:14 What a problem baby. What a problem baby. Is that what he said? That's funny. I said water god a problem baby. What a problem, baby. Pull out, crotch.
Starting point is 00:17:26 Pull out, couch. Pull out couch. Pull out couch. It's a pull out crotch. Pull out crotch. Riley Peterson. Hey, Riley. Hi, Queens.
Starting point is 00:17:34 Hi, Rose. Which kill was most satisfying? Dickhead, Dr. Cruz, or mega bitch Melissa? Mega bitch Melissa. Her stream so fast. Well, I know. She just opened the door and eat.
Starting point is 00:17:47 I didn't want him. I felt I wanted Dr. Cruz to just die. I was like, do it already. I like that Dr. Cruz was chased a little bit and torture. Like, and you know what I mean? He was, he was scared. I like that. And that's how I want to see the bad guys die.
Starting point is 00:18:01 I want him to die scared, not just surprised. My favorite death was the penis cut off one. That I felt like the most vindicated. When was that? That was like, that was after he cheated on his girlfriend. Yeah. I was like, get your penis cut off. Get your dick cut off.
Starting point is 00:18:17 Bye, bye, Pee. I vote Dr. Cruz, though, out of those two for sure. We're fighting. We're fighting. Twinkle, wait, sorry. Tiny Twinkle Tozy says, hiya. Oh, are you Scottish?
Starting point is 00:18:28 Are you from the UK? Hope you're both having the greatest week. I usually struggle to watch more than the three sequels or seasons of anything without losing interest. I so agree. Sorry, sorry. But my big exception is the Walking Dead and all of its spinoffs. I love it so much.
Starting point is 00:18:42 I actually have the iconic, don't open, dead inside door tattooed on my leg. That's sick. What movie or TV show have you loved enough to get tattooed or would get tattooed on yourself? That's a fun question. That is a fun question. I'm like, I have four tattoos. I have a lot of tattoos. I have four tattoos.
Starting point is 00:18:58 I have the name of, I, I'm more of like a getting music tattooed person, so I have the name of one of my favorite songs, Get Free, tattooed on my ribs. I got that when I was 19. It's about the hero's journey and like the life, death life cycle. And then I got my own song tattooed on my elbow. Your own song? Yeah, it's not out. name of the song yeah can they see it i don't know can you guys see it the thing is thing is thing can you the thing is thing can you guys see it yeah they can see it what's it say it says lilith cute but um
Starting point is 00:19:34 yeah so i'm just selfish but that wasn't the question the question was what tv show or movie you're not the question what tv show or movie would you get tattooed none i actually have have a tattoo of a television because I that's not a show page it was close no it's not it's close to um I'm actually getting a really big tattoo for my birthday next week you guys yeah and I'll go ahead and talk about it here because I've actually had a lot of people message me about my birthmark and think that it is psoriasis or a rash and it's actually not it is my birthmark and for my birthday next week I'm actually going to get it turned into a flower I'm going to get a vine going through it. So my pink spots will be part of the flower. I'm very excited. I don't know what TV or yeah. I mean, I have a TV tattoo.
Starting point is 00:20:32 I'm like, I don't know if I like anything enough to get. I'm kind of like done with tattoos for a bit. Like I've decided that I don't like this one. You don't think we should get Marvel tattoos? Oh my God. I would rather kill myself. Should we get Lord of the Ring tattoos? I would rather kill myself. Should we get our feet tattooed into? hobbits. Yes. Got her. I'm like, I don't know. I can't think of anything, Paige. I don't know if I can really think of anything either, but there are some shows and movies that I really do love. And one of the, you said that your exception was The Walking Dead and my exception, because almost every show, I love the first one or two seasons of, and then it totally falls off for me. But I really loved
Starting point is 00:21:13 Orange is the New Black. I feel like that was a series that just held up through all of its seasons. Do you I would get, no. I would get lasso the moon. What's that from? It's a wonderful life. Oh, cute. That would be a cute, like, illustration tattoo, too. If you had the moon and you, like, had a little lasso around it.
Starting point is 00:21:32 That would be so cute. Girls, won't you come out tonight? All right. Oh, is it your turn or my turn? I don't know. I think it's my favorite. Leano 3 says, this film was severely edited down by the MPA as the original cut was the bloodiest
Starting point is 00:21:45 Friday of the 13th of them all, including the modern ones, with guts, visceral organs, and way longer or different kills. Yeah, I feel like we didn't have much guts. Well, I felt like I could tell that stuff was cut from this one. Really? Yeah. An infamous deleted scene was the fact that Tina's father was originally going to reappear in the end as a decaying zombie like Jason,
Starting point is 00:22:05 taking in consideration he was underwater for so many years. Thank you. However, a producer reshot it with the actor, just having a bit of mud. It would be fun. If y'all can react to the uncut deaths after watching the first eight films, that's the YouTube channel My Fan Made Things MFMT has the uncut kills in the vids
Starting point is 00:22:22 aren't longer than three or four minutes per film Do y'all think the final film Yeah we should do that We should do that we should remember That would be so cool Between us Phone remember That we want to watch my
Starting point is 00:22:35 fan made films My fan made My fan made things And then the question is Do y'all think the film suffers From the censored gore And deleted special effects Yes I think that it would
Starting point is 00:22:47 have worked for us if the dad had been a zombie at the end. Yeah, I feel like I was taken out of it immediately. You would know that it was him, I guess. Like, you would have known anyways. I guess you're right. I did feel like they did not hold on a lot of deaths like they have in previous ones. So you're right, we can feel the censorship a bit. And then second question from Leon.
Starting point is 00:23:14 This is me? Yeah. I'm taking over. Yeah. There's a film all. There's a film altered ending where a fisherman is in a boat on Crystal Lake and gets pulled under the water by Jason, similar to the ending in part one and three. Part four, the final chapter also had a film altered dream ending that explains what happened to Mrs. Vorhees. Wait, no, Mrs. Jarvis.
Starting point is 00:23:36 Oh, Tommy's mom, yeah, because we never saw it. We just saw her seeing her. That's true. Trish, his sister goes to the bathroom and finds her mom dead in the tub, implying that she drowned. suddenly, oh, suddenly the mom's eyes open, completely white, and Trish turns to see the bloody Jason and half of his face cut off, striking the sheddy down on her before she wakes up in the hospital. Both endings are available to see on YouTube.
Starting point is 00:24:02 Do you all think these endings should have been kept? And all the Friday 13th films should follow this tradition of the jump scare ending, like in earlier films. Yes. Yeah, I like it. I mean, I like to have. and I wish that we knew that. Yeah, and I wanted to see those.
Starting point is 00:24:19 Those both would have been great because then it shows like, hey girl, he's still in the water, he's still in the lake. Why would they cut that? Because I have thought about that. I think about that all the time. We never really saw Mrs. Jarvis.
Starting point is 00:24:29 I think about that all the time. Nothing about her death. And we definitely never saw anybody drown. That would have been nice. And yeah, I like a little tradition with it too. All right. Final question from Leon. C.J. Graham, who played Jason in Part 6,
Starting point is 00:24:43 was a U.S. Army veteran, which explains Jason's body fit and faster yet stiff or calculated portrayal on that film. However, he wasn't asked to return for Part 7.
