Aaron Alexander & John Humphrey react to Episodes 19–24 of FRIENDS Season 1, the final stretch of the beloved sitcom’s debut season that made TV history. Created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, FRIENDS (1994–2004) became a cultural phenomenon — blending sharp comedy, heartfelt emotion, and unforgettable chemistry among its six leads living in 1990s New York City. These closing episodes feature some of the most iconic and highly searched moments from the early days of Central Perk — including Ross’s new role as a father-to-be, Rachel’s conflicted feelings toward Ross, Monica’s dating misadventures, Chandler’s sarcastic one-liners, Joey’s acting gigs, and Phoebe’s hilariously quirky songs. The ensemble cast includes Jennifer Aniston (Marley & Me, The Morning Show) as Rachel Green, Courteney Cox (Scream, Cougar Town) as Monica Geller, Lisa Kudrow (Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, The Comeback) as Phoebe Buffay, Matt LeBlanc (Episodes, Top Gear) as Joey Tribbiani, Matthew Perry (The Whole Nine Yards, The West Wing) as Chandler Bing, and David Schwimmer (Band of Brothers, Madagascar) as Ross Geller. Fan-favorite Ross attending Lamaze class, Phoebe’s “Smelly Cat” origin energy, Chandler’s disastrous date setups, and Rachel’s big airport realization — leading to one of the show’s most emotional season finales. With laughter, love, and classic ‘90s charm, these episodes showcase why FRIENDS remains one of the most rewatchable and influential sitcoms of all time — still making audiences laugh nearly three decades later. On a hangar of a little. of the cliff wow and we get a reprise of the theme not bad season one day your week your month or even your what a freaking yeah i want to be there for you at the airport okay that's wild
Starting point is 00:02:10 okay who do we yeah she looked familiar i don't know i've seen her before i think the little jay ross is doing oh my gosh friends we made it to the end of season one of friends we did it guys Got to be a little bit expedient today, but, yeah, this was, oh, my God, we got there. Oh, Rushy Pooh, but yeah, guys, thank you for watching these final six episodes of season one. A friend. Leave like, leave a comment. Make sure you're going, ring that freaking bell. Also, we want to thank people over at Prepper for cutting down these highlights so people on YouTube can come see them also.
Starting point is 00:02:48 Heck yeah. Also, if listen on Apple or Spotify, make sure you can go and go to this five stars. so we've got a lot of time today I feel we thoroughly enjoyed this and yeah we're going to get to the questions straight away without further ado pretty much most things I feel like you know
Starting point is 00:03:05 it's a sitcom I feel like what you guys want to talk about is the best stuff to jump into first yeah take it away or should I take it take the thing Tara now that you have finished season one have your thoughts
Starting point is 00:03:20 about any of the characters changed from the first six episodes you watched Did anything surprise you this season? Can't wait to continue watching as you follow the journey of these beloved characters into season two. Hand, Heart, right back at you. How are you feeling about the characters from then to now? Huh. Oh, man, I think you just really get more endeared to them as you go along, you know? I feel like their personalities are firmly defined once you watch them, but then just seeing them through the situations.
Starting point is 00:03:50 You just get more endeared with them, as you do with most people, as you get to know them. I feel like Monica got a little bit more defined. You know, she's a chef. She wants to break free. I think my, I think the episode where she had the credit card thief as a friend really gave us a little bit more insight into her, the fact that she wants to be more than what she's been. And then also the episode with her arc with the high school guy was fun. But yeah, I sort of starting to see some more more fun shades of her. and yeah for the most part everyone doesn't feel too different but i don't have a problem with
Starting point is 00:04:29 that i guess joey grew for a second when he you know learned some skills some oral skills uh in that final episode there but yeah man that's why i feel it with you yeah the fun thing i think is that you have both the strength of their archetypes and the cores of the characters but they're also able to maneuver a lot within that and so like joey actually frequently surprises me because he does a character like that who's like, he's not like exaggeratedly dumb, but he's like the most puppy dogish of the group.
Starting point is 00:05:02 But he does have like, you know, a lot of particular convictions and points of view and stuff like that. And there are times where you're like, oh, interesting. Like Joey is the voice of reason here or at least Joey is, you know, somebody who might actually not be as like,
Starting point is 00:05:18 you know, gung-ho hedonistic as he might present um so i don't know just certain temperings with the characters i think are are the fun surprises and then yeah watching as people you know indulge and maybe you know go a little off the deep end a la like a monica with that guy and they're both lying back and forth about their circumstances and whatnot um yeah i would agree like my my assessment of our thoughts about the characters hasn't like done a huge change because i think part of the art of a show like this is how to keep them like rooted enough to be comforting and also changing enough to be interesting. And so far I think that
Starting point is 00:05:58 they've just drawn a nice portrait of these people. And there's some stuff about the writing in the next question that pertains to this. But I mean, yeah, I guess the thing that surprised me about the season, I guess, is the serial notes, you know, the way it handled stuff like Rachel and Barry and Ross and Rachel. And the sort of long game of that is something that I know is part of the show, but, like, even in season one, like, the serialized elements are things where I'm like, oh, wow, interesting. I wasn't expecting that
Starting point is 00:06:28 so much in an episodic show like this. And then also, I think, the surprises in the form of, like, guest stars. We just learned off camera, Alex was telling us that, like, Phoebe, her sister characters, like, from another show, like, literally. No, I think Roxy was telling us. Or Roxy, yeah, yeah, yeah. It was, like, from
Starting point is 00:06:45 another specific show. And then you had, like, George Clooney and Noah Wiley showing up as ER doctors. incidentally you know stuff like that uh so yeah not that i didn't expect guest stars but uh but yeah phoebe has a very dark backstory yeah surprisingly dark but yeah this is really it's really fun to you know behold the journey and i'm excited to see what they grow into yeah i think i also quickly before we go on to the next question i liked ross finally getting to become a dad and i'm looking to seeing more of that the next season but the maturity of him and um his wife's lover kind of
Starting point is 00:07:19 being able to come to to like cool temperatures to be like you know that too parental was was nice to see yeah and just like I don't know I guess there's stuff in this season that has uh aged in a way you know it's always like oh it's from the 90s so stuff is going to be dated and yes there is some stuff that's dated but so a lot of conversations they're having and like the dynamics uh that they're discussing like the stuff with Joey's dad and stuff with that girl that Chandler's dating who wants to be like open non-monogamous right like things like that
Starting point is 00:07:52 that are way more common to hear disgust now and I'm like oh shit we were talking about this even back then in a major television sitcom it's like those things are interesting and they do it's like there's the charm and the fun of the show but there's also like yeah they're talking about life too you know so it's pretty interesting I think so too
Starting point is 00:08:08 heck yeah Nikki Sonorisa What is your take? And thank you, by the way. On the scene between Phoebe Ross and Susan, you just brought up in the closet at the hospital. I've always found that scene so telling about Phoebe's character. She's one of my favorite characters because she reminds me of myself,
Starting point is 00:08:24 always trying to be the fixer and seeking and finding that family among her crew. Despite all the hardship she's been through, she's always able to see the positive side of things. Yeah, I agree. And I really like that scene. I really liked that episode, I thought, was really great. And I thought they really used the crescendo of voices and cross-talk and discord and just, you know, overlapping nerves and feelings, you know, to, you know, it creates this overwhelming air and you really feel the, the two, you know, warring perspectives between Ross and, and, you know, the, his wife, ex-wife's partner there, whose name I will commit to memory. that scene was really great and i thought yeah the way phoebe really recontextualized that in the moment was a lovely character moment that also worked really nicely as a dramatic beat in general and and brought them back around such a night like that could easily have been slim and saccharin but it was a really lovely like yeah i grew up in such a dysfunctional place and so to have a bunch of people who were so charged up about creating a good life for somebody like even that conflict is a beautiful thing and even the the the
Starting point is 00:09:36 heights of this fight that you guys are having is like for good reason yeah no i thought they they did a really good job of executing that whole scenario and the fact that it stemmed from febe trying to help and tell them like stop fighting and then force them in a situation where they had to sort of work through their issues uh i mean they they yeah they ultimately were on the same page by the end of it but yeah i think that phoebe offering her levity and the change of perspective into how they were handling this situation with the baby name and just the tension they've had to the entire season. It was a really nice, like, button end to that whole journey that led us up to this point.
Starting point is 00:10:20 And, yeah, I think Phoebe is a really, she has a few different shades. We know she's a lot of comic relief. I think all of them are funny in their own ways. But she's, like, sort of oblivious sometimes, sort of literal sometimes. sometimes and then also tries to... Or woo-woo and new agey a lot of the time. Woo-woo and new agey tries to bring some levity or some semblance of joy or feeling with her music as well. So the fact that, you know, she was there with them and helped them aid and even unintentionally inspired the name of their baby.
Starting point is 00:10:56 I thought it was all great. I thoroughly enjoyed that scene. I think out of, well, I don't, I'll preserve that answer, but once we get into it. But, yeah, I would say that out of the six isn't my top or half of the six episodes we just watched. Yeah, yeah, 100%. And I love that, you know, a character like that who has a lot of comedic qualities can also be a source of wisdom. Exactly. You know, 100%.
Starting point is 00:11:18 Also has their own wisdom. And that makes her feel more real, even though she is one of the more, you know, humorous characters for sure. Reject Nation, you and I make decisions every day. But on prize picks, being right can actually get you paid. Now, truth, my wife is a massive football fan. In fact, just a few weeks ago, I got to go back to our hometown, watch a glorious Denver Broncos game. Never been to a football game before. It was a hoot. Needless to say, she's the real fantasy sports expert in the house.
Starting point is 00:11:47 She really gets involved. Like, no joke. And why am I talking about this? Because we're talking about prize picks. And what's prize picks? It's a skill-based daily fantasy app, not gambling, because it's all about knowledge and strategy, not luck. You just pick more or less on two player stats. For example, Sequin Barkley. More or less than one rushing TD for those who are not in the know. That means touchdown.
Starting point is 00:12:07 Joe Burrell, more or less than 2.5 passing TD's touchdowns. Anyway, you get your picks right and you win cash. And you can play in over 40 states including California, Texas and Georgia. Try stacks, pick the same player up to three times, or follow friends and creators to copy their lineup in one click. And if your player leaves early, injury reboot protects your lineup. So Reject Nation, you can download the Price Picks app today and use code Rejects to get $50. in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. That's code rejects.
Starting point is 00:12:37 Get $50 in lineups after your first $5 lineup. Prize Vix. It's good to be right. Senaruk. Just finished your watch along for the first six and had fun with you both. I'm so glad to hear that.
Starting point is 00:12:50 And thank you for chiming in. Thank you. Truly. It's so nice and necessary to enjoy things together right now. Absolutely is. Okay. Question. John, you mentioned after the first six, readying yourself to take notes on the writing for your own interests
Starting point is 00:13:04 and I'm wondering after the first season if there are any major lessons in the writing you'd take into your own work I mean yeah I'm I'm I am I guess because you know we're consuming and sort of responding to the context
Starting point is 00:13:20 and the story and the flavors of the comedy and all that stuff you know I would certainly love to go back and just focus in on writing but I am yeah fascinated by just the ingenuity of sitcom writing in general and the way that you know this show even in the
Starting point is 00:13:36 first season and I'm sure that I imagine the first season is not like the top rated season even if it's a highly rated season just because you know I feel like it usually takes a season or two to really start getting into that like quintessential stride for a lot of shows but yeah I thought this was really strong
Starting point is 00:13:52 and fun overall and the way that they're able to pack a lot into 22 minutes is really fun and you know kind of mystifying and obviously there's a lot that rides on the performers but you know it's in the writing too and i think they know well when to be you know straightforward and realistic versus you know humorous and where to place a punchline and where to do their wordplay and you know how to harness the voices of the characters um i think a lot of
Starting point is 00:14:17 notes i would take on this are sort of in how to balance uh serial elements with episodic elements because obviously every episode is the one where a new episodic situation happens minus maybe a two-parter but even those have episodic subplots um so yeah it's stuff like that you know the way they've laced ross and rachel as well as the like there are a few sagas that have happened over the season there was rachel and paolo and there's the rachel and barry back and forth thing and there's ross and you know his little blossoming family unit which is very unique um and so yeah things like that or just devices like trapping chandler in that bank um you know the way they come up with games to play across the episodes there's so many
Starting point is 00:15:01 notes to take and I feel like the more we go the more I'll kind of be able to observe that but yeah I feel like I have a lot of broad strokes because again you're kind of working all sides of your brain but I do you know appreciate the tradition of comedy writing like this that is so tight and compact
Starting point is 00:15:16 and still manages to throw a little wisdom throw a little heartfelt throw a little bit of the right kinds of absurdity you know yeah man that's awesome yeah and Aaron did not pay one iota of attention to the writing at all I don't think about the right writing so just in the moment no like I guess to add a little bit yeah I wholeheartedly agree the fact that you're able to find these distinct voices for these six characters while having them all in there at the same time and having them intersect in individual story arcs where two of them repaired off and I like that this is a type of show that we can get all different pairings and it can work and those different flavors dynamics come out within each of their individual relationships and I think that uh
Starting point is 00:16:01 uh is a testament to how strong the writing is here and also the fact that yeah we can get a variety of different types of situations and it doesn't feel stale at all and we are able to have these larger arcs yet spread them out even if it's scenes that sort of just kind of end rather than having a conclusion yeah like a thing of the scene where rachel wakes up no no no not even that one where Barry just barges in and then he's in their apartment just ends I was like how did that scene end? Like what does he just walk out after that?
Starting point is 00:16:35 Yeah. But yeah, I think they do a great job of having those kind of strange beats but don't linger on it too long for you for us to continue the story in another episode or another scene. So yeah, I'm thoroughly enjoying it and I am now conscious of the fact that notes should be
Starting point is 00:16:52 taken so I'm now taking mental notes. There you go. There we go. We're going to have a tone by the end of the show. right j rushed and closing us out on the q and a who's your favorite side character ooh that's a good question yeah yeah i mean you know yeah i think you have to shout out to janus yeah she's like the most frequent one oh the second most frequent one third most frequent one yeah you got to really be game to play that role and i know that janis is the butt of a lot of jokes but i also think that the game of janis has a character and the
Starting point is 00:17:24 thread of her and Chandler in this season was very funny. 100%. And then, yeah, like fun, Monica was a very fun one. I'm trying to think of who else. Leah was really fun.
Starting point is 00:17:36 Leah Remini, yeah, it was a very fun one. Including was fun. I mean, obviously, yeah. Hank Azaria, I thought, was a really fun. I hope he comes back at some point, maybe. I could see that happening down the line. John Levitts. It's fun to get Harry Shear in here.
Starting point is 00:17:50 Yeah, John Lovitz was a great one. and let's see Harry Shearer Simpsons of voices because yeah he's like he's Flanders there you go and Smithers and Kent Brockman
Starting point is 00:18:04 a lot of the deeper voices you're used to hearing yeah and there's more than that even but yeah there were a lot of good ones I didn't say janitor John Levitts are my favorite and then Clooney's probably a third
Starting point is 00:18:16 yeah yeah that was just a fun kind of way to watch them you know interface with a different type of, you know, Titanic Network telly at the time. But yeah, appreciate you guys. Leave us your favorite side characters down below. And, God, that one bit was, was, was, God, there was one bit here. It was like cracking me up.
Starting point is 00:18:40 Which one? And now it's, and now it's eluding me. But, yeah, these are really funny. These were very charming. And, God, oh, it was in those middle episodes. And I made a note of it, and it'll come back. me at some point but there was something we were like cackling about there's so many things we watched 24 episodes i know dude but yeah these were really fun the characters the acting even watching and kind
Starting point is 00:19:03 of figuring out how they must have edited these together and stitched them together from the live audience to the you know final edit is really fun and yeah like the heart of it it's got just enough you know lightness and levity to be you know a fun oh you know i love the guy upstairs too the guy upstairs is really funny oh yeah his bit with the monkey had me kill let me dying yeah he's so fun he's a really funny character so yeah um yeah this has just been a joy and uh yeah the the you know long running stuff is nice for getting us like long term invested but yeah just like the strength of the actors the writing all the stuff is really fun yeah i've thoroughly enjoyed every character that we've gotten to meet over the course of our 24 episodes you know obviously some episodes
Starting point is 00:19:49 you like more than others but all of them got laughs out of out of the both of us which you know is a testament to a great show you know this show is like 30 years old some comedy just is timeless some comedy remains to hit and i think that's a great thing i'm thoroughly enjoying the seasons or at least the first season and obviously kind of how you said it's only goes up from here because as you create more seasons you get more defined with your writing and then you can find other places for your characters to go which only creates better situations and more defined moments for each of the characters so yeah i really love that i remember what it was now also fun trivia facts this is the first appearance of the rachel haircut and it was the friggin joseph stallin bit that cracked me up is that the one you're talking about freaking funny yeah yeah yeah yeah and then whatever has
Starting point is 00:20:46 name at the end is this is a joy this is a blast and I can't wait to get into season two tugging my grind or something like that something like that yeah tugging my groin yeah tugging my groin oh god okay guys that'll be it for us today thank you so much for watching us on our friends journey in season one and we'll see you back in on season two
