Tara Erickson & Andrew Gordon react to Game of Thrones Season 2, Episodes 3 (“What Is Dead May Never Die”) & 4 (“Garden of Bones”), continuing HBO’s epic adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. Created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the series deepens its political intrigue and dark fantasy world as new alliances form and old loyalties are tested in the battle for the Iron Throne. In these episodes, Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage – The Station Agent, Cyrano) maneuvers through King’s Landing with brilliant strategy and sharp wit, outsmarting his rivals as Hand of the King. Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley – 24: Live Another Day, The Others) seeks to unite the realm’s fractured houses, while Jon Snow (Kit Harington – Pompeii, Eternals) faces harsh truths north of the Wall under the command of Lord Commander Mormont (James Cosmo – Braveheart, Troy). Iconic and highly searched moments include Tyrion’s triple betrayal test, Theon’s conflicted loyalties, Renly Baratheon’s camp introduction, the eerie birth of the shadow assassin, and the rise of Melisandre’s dark power. With rich performances, political manipulation, and supernatural terror, these episodes expand the world of Westeros and remind viewers that no one is ever truly safe. So first thing we'll do is just go straight to our questions.
So keep that in mind.
All right. Let's get to it.
Lauren G.
Has your favorite storyline based on characters being followed changed it all from season one to two now that you're a little further into the season.
Oh.
Let me read that again.
Sorry, I was taking my headache.
Your favorite storyline has it changed from season one to season two?
Hard to say.
Honestly, I'm, Lauren, I'm truly invested in all these storylines.
There's not one storyline where I'm like, I'm sick of this one.
I want to go to the other one.
I know, like, the question is particularly, is there one specific storyline that is your favorite of all the great ones?
Because they're all great.
I would say Tyrion's my favorite one.
I know that is the generic answer because he's the most awesome.
So, no, it hasn't changed.
Not for you.
It was Tyrion before.
I'm so locked into every single one.
Yeah, I get it.
They're all my favorite storylines.
That's how good they all are.
It's just he has my favorite scenes is what I'll say.
But I love where every storyline is going because you get to.
to see all these characters. Again, they're lining themselves up for power and a lot of them
know how to play the game, but also you get to see a lot of them in vulnerable places too.
So I think the interactions are just so damn fascinating. The drama is so good. The action is so
good. The horrific violence is so good. It just, it really hits you. Everything is so well done.
So I wouldn't say it's changed, but I just say, again, everything is so immersive where I'm locked
into every single storyline.
I would say that.
What about you?
Yeah.
I really like where we ended with like the lady,
Lord of Light Lady.
That was wild to me.
And now I am very curious
as to what in the actual
thaw is going to happen there.
So I'm going to throw that out as like,
I need to know.
And what is this demon?
Gotta know it.
Mad love.
Are you surprised?
it all by Theon's betrayal of the Starz
and what do you think should
or will be Rob's punishment for his betrayal?
No, I'm not surprised because
again he was, you could see
and hear I think in season one if I remember
correctly he had been talking a little
bit here and there about his family
and for someone who has been
rejected and seeks
to get acceptance
from them
it's not hard to see why
he is choosing this path but
Again, at the end of the day, the Starks did bring him in, and they took him in as one of their own
and never treated him as a dog, as he would say that, you know, his father traded him as.
So at the end of the day, my belief, and again, this is not me reading spoilers, this is just
my personal gut reaction, or my gut feeling, rather.
I truly believe at the end of the day, he is not going to choose his sister and his father,
whatever he is doing right now.
He's going to choose the Starks at the end of the day.
But his decision right now is not that shocking, to be quite honest.
What about you?
I'm a little 50-50 on it.
Like, you would somewhat expect it because of how much he wants to be accepted by his father.
And he wanted to prove himself.
But then he realizes that his sister is actually more of a badass than him.
And his father respects his sister way more than him.
It's still as though he's still being.
thrown out, even though he's actually there in their presence.
I'm not sure if Rob would actually give him a punishment.
It depends on, like, the actual level of violence that they would create at coming at the
Starks.
Like, I don't know how he's actually going to come at the Starks with the Greyjoys.
If it's very severe, obviously Rob can totally just kill him.
If it's not and it's like a talk, then my assumption is he's not going to do much.
But that's just my guess.
Well, the gray joys are say or the dad is an absolute psychopath.
He wants power and he wants revenge on the Starks.
So it's not going to be a talk.
He wants revenge.
And if it goes that path and Theon does not choose the side of the.
Starks, it's going to end in a beheading
from Rob to Theon. I don't
see it going that way and I see Theon choosing
the side of the Starks. We'll see what happens
though. From Tara.
Thank you so much for being a Royal Reject and for
asking the question. We appreciate you so much.
Hi, Terran, Andrew. Hi, Tara.
What are your thoughts on the Stark Girl's journey
so far? Sansa is trapped in
King's Landing, being tormented, forced
to play in the game and then Aria
trying to get home dressed as a boy
and now in Tywin's hands. That's crazy.
Luckily, Tywin doesn't know
who she really is if you could advise them what would you tell each of them what advice would you
give to both of them um i think that sansa is actually playing the game pretty well right she's uh
in that last scene she's like my duty is to the king he's my king yada yada um i think you have
to keep your enemies really close and obviously ari is going to be close to our biggest
enemy, which is Tywin Lannister, because we're trying to obviously take them down.
I mean, if she's close enough, he did say cup bearer.
I would say in order to survive, just do your job the right way because he knows that
you're a girl, but he doesn't know who you are yet.
But we are close to being like, well, can we damage them in any way, having Aria that
close?
Same with Sonsa, although Sonsa had the opportunity to actually, you know,
push Joffrey, but then again, like,
she'd probably be beheaded in the moment, right, if she did that.
So I would say just keep him close unless your life is in danger.
I think Sonsa's doing the right thing.
And I think Aria is smarter and a little more savage or a lot more savage than Sonsa.
So I think Aria in that position, I think she's,
going to cause some damage that he, Lord Tywin and anyone else may not be able to figure out.
That is what I hope.
For sure.
For sure.
Those are some astute points.
I agree with everything you're saying.
I think also, too, when it comes to Aria, the element of surprise is a very formidable
attack.
So the fact that she is, as you say, keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
I think that is going to help her and whatever she ends up doing or to use that information
to help her later on.
So that is going to be some very, very fascinating.
and interesting interactions between her and Taiwan,
especially the fact that Taiwan doesn't even know who she is.
Also, I know she can't, like, maybe hand one-on-one.
I don't know if she could defeat him in battle,
even though Sirono, I think his name was,
who trained her in the combat.
I don't know if she could beat him one-on-one,
but again, as I mentioned, the element of surprise
is a very formidable attack,
especially if your enemy thinks that you are weak,
you know, make him think you're weak when you're strong.
So that's going to be fascinating.
When it comes to Sansa,
I love how she's keeping up the facade and playing the game,
And she doesn't even realize she's got two allies backed in her corner, rather three.
You know, when you got Tyrion, you got Shea, and I forgot Tyrion's amazing bodyguard.
He is awesome.
I love that guy so much.
So she's got three people in her corner and she doesn't even realize it.
So because she doesn't know who to trust at this point.
Understandably, so she is doing the smart thing by trusting no one right now and just playing the game.
So I would advise Sonsa, keep doing what you're doing, let people's actions speak to you.
And once you see who Tyrion really is, which I think she's starting to see, like, when he came to save her, really, from being beaten in the hall.
That should speak a lot to the nobility and the type of human being and man that, and the difference in Lannister, that a piece of shit, an arrogant, little sniveling weasel that Joffrey is versus the courageous and honorable human being that Tyrion is so.
And I think she also sees, too, Shea is not really a handwoman or maid woman or whatever it's called, and sees like, okay, these people.
People actually are here for me.
They care for me, and I can confide in them.
I can trust them.
And this is going to help me in whatever the long game I have to do.
So keep doing what you're doing, and you're going to build that rapport and that trust with Tyrion, with Che, and Tyrion's awesome bodyguard.
Hopefully so.
Alex Meza.
Have you picked up on the opening credits changing every episode?
The locations on the map are locations will see during the episode.
And I think that's so freaking cool and creative.
Yes, Alex.
In this one, specifically for this episode, Carth was added.
which was very cool.
That was the first time we saw that.
And I do agree with you.
Yes, it's pretty cool.
I think I pointed it out every time like something new is...
You do and thank God you do
because I am conducting a symphony
while the opening credits are going on.
So I'm not fully locked in.
I need to do a better job.
But you are also pointing it out for me.
So I appreciate you on that.
And thank you, Alex, for pointing that out as well.
It's just, it's multitasking.
You know, when you're conducting an epic score like that
and trying to visually pay attention to.
So I will definitely.
try to do better job with it. Difficult life for Andrew here. I'm saying, guys, I have to watch
movies and TV shows for a living and teach baseball. My life sucks. I know.
Tough times. Anyways, thank you for the question. Alex. Jay Rushden. What up, Jay?
Question. She gave birth to the shadow monster is the weirdest part so far there. That's definitely
one of the most wackadoo parts we've seen on the show so far. I would go. It's definitely
up there. If it's not the most weirdest part, I would say feeding off
little babies to wildlings and
white walkers, although I
understand the purpose of doing that.
It's to feed them and the
sacrificial ways of keeping them
offended off so that they don't attack
us. So even though I still don't
agree with it, but I understand the purpose
of doing it. But I would definitely say
I don't think, I mean, I know
Tara has seen the show and it's been a while and she
doesn't remember a lot, but I was not expecting
that. That was creepy and weird
and I already thought that woman was
off her frickin' rockers as hot as she
is and the whole
fanatic and whole religious side
of what she and her
you know what beliefs are is just
insane and you can see it's driving
not Renly
Rennis Stannis
Dang it got to remember all these days
it's driving Stannis to a
place of madness and insanity
and it's going to take him down
a dark path I mean he's already threatening
to kill his brother at dawn
you know this is a family member of his
I'm curious I know they said like
You know, you wanted no part of people or in general in the past, but I can't imagine their
relationship was beyond that type of strain was like horrific and like they hated each other
or something, but he's willing to kill his brother for power. So, you know, I think this woman
is clearly, besides the shadow monster before that, she's clearly leading this guy down
the wrong path, Stan. So, you know, I feel bad for you and that's just a lesson for all of us
in life. Gotta be very careful about the people we surround ourselves with. It's a good lesson for
all of us. So what about you? Yeah. Um, I definitely think it had that sci-fi effect to it. It's
definitely the weirdest thing that we have seen. We haven't gotten special effects in that way,
like CGI where you're like, what in the actual F, dude? It's not even a real freaking baby,
yet they still juiced it, right? She still needed him to like juice it to get it out there.
And I'm like, that's freaking weird. Women can do a lot with,
sex like that is what this storyline is saying is that like we can make stannis our pawn because
she is like a hot woman who like basically is just like I'll give you what you need so we're
going to have to see because I mean we do realize that he has the wife she was saying you're
disgusted by her she's hiding somewhere he like keeps her up in a castle he doesn't see her
So none of that currently matters right now, but she is the one that is always with him by his side and is now just birthed some weird-ass creature, which I'm now thinking could be the big difference between Stannis fighting and possibly winning over Renley because Renley doesn't have, he doesn't have a secret weird monster that was birthed as some Lord of Light lately.
lady's vagina you know what i mean like it's getting weird over here so definitely the weirdest and
we're just going to have to see that is not a sentence i thought i was going to hear in this review
we're going to have to see uh lady lights vagina uh anyways yeah that was uh again i'm so invested
in all these storylines as we said like davos now seeing that i'm curious to see how he reacts
next episode and obviously with tyrian with the cousin that was one of my favorite interaction
I know I say that about Tyrion every episode
but it's like they just write this character so well
he just again knows how the game
he knows how the game works
he knows how to size people up
he knows how to read people
he is so damn smart
he's the most perfect person
to be in King's Landing in this position
like as much as wise as Ned Stark was
Tyrion knows how to play the game
and that's why he's going to
hopefully survive way longer
and you know continue to do what he's doing
so uh yeah
It's just really great stuff.
I'm so obsessed with every portion of the storylines.
And also, too, another great scene was Lord Baylish Little Finger and Kat.
You can really see as much of an arrogant, toxic human being that he is, especially when he's talking down to the women that work for him, you can see how vulnerable because he's so in love with this woman.
And then he was trying to, you know, come out with her with the deal.
And also, he lied about half the deal.
So curious to see where that storyline goes as well.
There's just so much that's happening.
And then, of course, we got to the new city.
Quarth, Carth.
We'll never be able to pronounce anything ever.
Sorry, guys.
But, yeah, there is just so many different facets and layers.
And, again, it's just a credit to the writers for you to be able to truly have an ensemble
and be able to follow it cohesively and not be, like, disengaged, rather.
And, again, you can also have episodes where certain characters, like, we didn't have
John Snow, I believe, in this episode or any of the, you know, that crew.
And Sam Tarley, like.
No, they go on and.
off on and off throughout this yeah for you to be able to have episodes where you're missing key
characters and still be fully engaged it's truly an ensemble and those are my honestly stranger
things this those are my favorite type of shows when you can like have missing characters missing
and still have an incredible immersive well executed show episode yeah yeah it's well written
well directed happy to be here we love you guys for joining us leave all the comments leave the
likes tell us how cool we are we'll see you on the next one
Thank you.
