Roxy Striar & Tara Erickson dive into the suspenseful world of slasher cinema with a Reaction & Review of John Carpenter’s iconic 1978 horror classic, Halloween! This genre-defining film introduced audiences to Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis in her film debut, later known for True Lies and Knives Out), a quiet Haddonfield teen whose Halloween night turns into a terrifying game of cat-and-mouse when she becomes the target of a masked killer. Michael Myers, the silent and relentless embodiment of evil, escapes from Smith’s Grove Sanitarium and returns to his hometown to stalk new victims—launching one of horror’s most chilling franchises. The film also stars Donald Pleasence (The Great Escape, You Only Live Twice) as Dr. Sam Loomis, the psychiatrist determined to stop Michael before he kills again, and Nancy Kyes (The Fog, Assault on Precinct 13) as Laurie’s friend Annie. With its minimalist score (composed by Carpenter himself), stark cinematography, and brilliant use of suspense and silence, Halloween set the standard for slasher films to come. Key scenes—such as Michael’s haunting figure in the doorway, the POV opening shot, and Laurie’s desperate final confrontation—have become some of the most highly searched and iconic moments in horror movie history. Thank you to Hewell for sponsoring this video. More on them in just a bit.
This is Horror Thursday, y'all.
We're ready for a Halloween franchise. Let's go, Horror Thursday.
We're watching this on Amazon Prime.
It is the first, the original Halloween movie,
and we are going to be watching this in three, two, one.
All right, guys, we officially just watched Halloween for the first time.
There's no way I've ever seen that before.
I have seen the recent ones, but that was not familiar to me.
We're going to talk all about it.
But before we do that, big shout out to Prepper.
Thank you guys for helping edit us down,
especially when I'm doing things like pausing to go get my job.
jacket so that I don't flash my cooter.
Also, if you're on Apple, Spotify, wherever we are, don't forget that five stars, the thumbs
up, leave a comment, let us know your thoughts.
If you want to be cool, like our Royal Rejects and you want to ask us questions, which we
will get to at the, in a little bit in this review, then go to Patreon.
And that's how you can do that.
And that's how we take the questions.
So we are getting to that.
But before we get to our Royal Rejects questions from you guys, I just want to ask
you, Tara, as the Halloween queen.
What do you think of Halloween?
Oh, I loved it.
You did. I did.
There are some things, though, I'm a little upset at that Lori threw down the knife a couple
times.
I do not like that at all.
That kind of stuff, especially when it's, well, when it's any character, but mostly
when it's, like, especially when it's a woman and I want her to be strong and kick ass.
Just in general, you don't drop a weapon if there's a murder around, but it's okay.
The rest of it, I mean, this, the pacing was really good.
I really liked it.
I thought it, like, it, I was very, I was in it the whole time.
So we, we've done the Purge franchise, the Chucky franchise, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Evil Dead.
What other, what other horror big, big franchises?
Chucky.
You did? Okay.
I think those are the main ones that we've done together on this channel.
Yeah.
As the first one, where does this kind of stack up for you?
Do you feel like this is as strong as some of our other franchises?
Well, right now.
Oh, and wrong turn.
We just did wrong turn.
We just did that one.
We just did seven movies of that.
Yeah, you're right.
God, cannibals.
Huh?
I mean, you know what?
I think for this one, for the first movie,
I do really like the way it was shot.
I think the reason why it felt like it didn't drag
is because of those long tracking shots
and also the music.
And obviously, all the acting was great.
So it's like on point for a film.
So I'm excited to see where it goes.
I'm also like, holy crap, he doesn't die.
Yeah.
Like Michael Myers
Is that in that the same with Jason and Freddie?
Totally, they never die.
You're right.
Chuckie kind of too.
They always, yeah.
They all have this thing where they don't die
and I think we just have to kind of grow to accept that.
I agree.
And I'm like, okay, yeah, all right, they don't die.
I just wish you wouldn't really just.
And some of them are slow.
Like Jason Swampoy is slow and Michael is slow,
but Chuck he's fast and Freddy's fast.
So I feel like I'm way more afraid of the fast ones personally.
Yeah.
Like I'm slow as hell.
I really love this movie, but in terms of the pacing,
sometimes I feel like because he's so slow,
we're moving a little slow because we can't go that fast
because he can't go that fast.
So it's like, you just run to the house next door
and then we're kind of waiting,
and it's like, just run down the street and keep going.
Right.
You'll make it to the station.
I mean, or you run into a house,
you look through all the drawers, do they have a gun?
And by the time he's walking across,
you probably get to shoot him.
I'm super with you, though.
I give her grace on dropping the knife the first time
because she didn't know he couldn't die.
She's nervous.
She thought he was dead.
The second time, come on now.
Girlfriend, you not only did you drop it,
you threw it right next to him.
You were like, oh, I actually don't want your knife anymore.
This is for you, honey.
And I was like, no, don't.
But she's awesome.
She's such a great actress.
And I understand why she's so many people's favorite final girl.
Yeah.
Characters that we don't like, Annie.
Annie's, yeah.
I mean, it's just really, just Annie.
She was a twat, man.
She was such a twat.
She was not nice.
I think it makes sense for the movie
to have a character that we don't like
but I will also say when she died
I was like, nah.
I know, I mean, it's not like it hurt
because she was really not nice to Lori at all.
I also kind of want to go back
and figure out that petto joke.
Like, was it really as,
is it really what we thought it was?
I mean, yes.
And I think they went like, oh, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
Like, they like, I get it.
Like, oh, we're making dark jokes.
with each other, but I'm like, that's very dark.
Also, it's the 80s.
Maybe that's what they did then.
Yeah.
Make those really, you know what I mean?
Oh, now I have the hiccups.
God bless America.
I can tell you were burping or what was happening.
Chug, chug, chug.
We also both obviously love the score.
It's iconic for a reason.
It plays everywhere.
Not only is it the score of Halloween franchise,
but it's also the score of Halloween.
Like, this is one of the most,
on Instagram during Halloween
It's the number one tagged thing
When you go to a theme park during Halloween
This is the number one played thing
When you just have like Halloween tunes
Going on on Spotify or Apple
This is the number one thing that kind of pops up
So the Halloween score is iconic
And it's maybe even more iconic at this point
Than the franchise is
It's so well known
Right
But I thought it was utilized very very well in these movies
I agree
And that like
When you hear it like pop in
You're like oh snap
Here we go. Where is he? And I love that they started with it and ended with it as well.
I mean, it's dispersed throughout, but like specifically in the beginning, that's when we first initially hear it.
And then especially it takes us out at the end, which is a lot of fun.
The cop going around back ended up not being relevant, huh?
He was like, I'm going to go out front. You go around back when her dad pulls up, Annie's dad, who doesn't even know that her daughter's dead.
Oh.
And we never see him.
Yeah, you're right.
We don't.
All right, well, maybe sequel.
I don't know.
Oh, right.
Maybe he'll pop up.
Yeah, I don't know.
Should we get to some of these patron questions?
All right, here we go.
There was a lot more.
That's what I was trying to look up Patreon, but let's just go with these.
Shout out to the patron questions coming for the Royal Rejects.
If you want to ask us questions, go to patreon.com slash Real Rejects.
You can ask us stuff that we answer after the movies.
We've been loving doing this.
Here we go.
Starting Mike Joyce.
All right, Mike Joyce says,
How do you think you two would handle it if you were in Lori's shoes?
I would never drop the weapon.
Yeah, you would never drop the weapon and I would bolt.
Yeah.
I mean, I probably run too for sure.
You're slow.
Not you, him.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm slow. You're slower.
We'd both run with a weapon, I think, too.
I understand that the kids were in the house and she probably didn't want to leave them there.
But I think that you could have, you still had time to get them out of the house and start running.
And he still wouldn't too slow.
So I think I would have handled it pretty well.
I definitely don't think I would lock myself in any closet with a clothes hanger.
But I can't make fun of her game because she lives.
Yeah.
You know, so.
I definitely said to the closet thing, I would have opened up a window and just jumped.
And just been like, well, he's going to kill me anyway.
Let's take the risk.
It is innovative that she uses a knitting needle and she uses a coat hanger.
That's cool.
cooler than having her
going to the kitchen grab a knife, which we see all the time.
Right. A lot cooler.
I agree with that. Next question.
Pierre, the reject for Taryn Roxy.
Who is your favorite final girl
in a horror movie? I dreaded
the day that this question came.
That's a toughie. I don't know
if I know the answer to this right now.
You know, the movie that I did not watch
on this channel, but I did watch
What is it?
For AfterBuzz, ready or not?
Oh, I watch that movie.
I watched that for this channel.
Love her.
Love that vibe of her being the final.
But I think it's really just the picture in my head
because she's completely covered in blood.
But I do like, I did like her.
You know, Lori as a final girl was great.
I'm going to see.
Who's our other final girls?
I'm Googling Best Final Girls.
And the AI answer is,
the best final girl in horror movies
is a matter of personal preference,
but Lori Strode.
Oh, I thought it was stroder.
I've been calling her story.
I'm sure so many of you guys were yelling at me.
Lori Strode from the Halloween franchise is often cited as a quintessential example of the trope.
Other popular choices include Sidney Prescott from Scream, who I love, and Ellen Ripley from Alien.
Oh, yeah.
Alien.
Just did that, too.
Yeah, Ripley is a great one.
I like your ready or not answer, though, because I think that that's a unique, unique.
Black Christmas
I've never seen it
Cabin in the Woods
cited as people's favorite
Final Girl
Did we watch this? Oh the dissent I watched
that and she is an amazing final girl
Evil Dead
Ash Williams are calling a final girl
That's interesting
Huh
Oh we did the entire
Oh I did the entire
Final Destination franchise
Yeah you did
Yeah I didn't do that together
Get Out
Oh I guess they're calling a lot of
guys final girls oh because i was confused by that evil dead reference oh happy death day we did that
franchise oh that was a good that's a good one trees an awesome final girl that was yeah we forget
because we watch so many things i'm just prepared for all of the people being like you call they
the wrong name yeah and i did i'm so sorry uh nancy from a uh nightmare on elm street we really
liked her oh we did like her yeah she was awesome and then she comes back so that one makes sense
I didn't do the...
I haven't seen pray or any of those, but...
You know me if you said pray?
Hell yeah.
I love that movie.
It's on there?
Yeah, this is on Indie Wire.
A lot of people mentioning Scream.
Texas Chainsaw Masker, you just...
Didn't you do those?
I did watch that one.
The thing...
Us. Oh, yeah, that was...
She was great as a final girl, too.
Okay, those are just some of them.
But thank you for the question.
Hopefully that somewhat answered it,
even though we didn't give you a definitive.
of answer yeah reject nation I have officially lost over 45 pounds this year I'm still working on a
couple of extra goals for body composition development but I'm proud to say I've done it with

They're my two favorites.
They're my main staples, and they are to my two favorite ones.
No mess, no prep, just grab, drink, and go.
Legitimately good taste, no chalky aftertaste.
I'm a strict macro plan, and I can fit it into my macro plan.
Low sugar, high protein, super efficient.
I'm all about efficiency.
And flavor selection is pretty good.
My wife actually really likes the iced coffee and the strawberry banana.
And if you can't decide between all their wonderful flavors, they got a variety box.
And if you're anything like me, variety is a treasure.
Best part, each bottle is under five bucks, which is great.

Thanks to Heel for sponsoring this video.
This is my half-room cutie.
My half-room cutie.
Who knows?
So excited for you guys to watch Halloween.
Yeah.
I've been waiting for this reaction since the beginning from you two.
You guys are awesome.
My question is, what are your thoughts on Jamie Lee Curtis?
version of the final girl and your thoughts on the overall tone of this film terr i really like her
character i think that she was down to earth really grounded you believe her when she talks you
believe when she talks to herself she isn't like too over the top i don't think really anybody was
but like her subtlety is there and i really like that uh that's something that i'm always very much
drawn to. Um, so in her being a final girl and being, you know, finding enough resolve to find a
weapon that's near her, great. I love that stuff. So her getting the knitting needle, stabbing him,
although, sure, I'm still going to say, I'm mad that she, that she dropped the knife a couple
of times. But other than that, her being as resourceful as she was and not just being like,
uh, please don't kill me, which I would hate. That's obviously not a, uh, a, uh,
final goal status, she did a great job.
I was, hell yeah.
And the thoughts on the overall tone of the film,
I think that the music, as I said, combined with like the long takes, the cinematography,
it's weird how like Michael Myers, you said, he moves so slow, so do these shots.
Yeah.
Like the shots are like, they're walking all the way down the street, right?
We're chilling.
We're holding.
Hold.
Nope, keep holding.
Nope, stay right here.
Totally.
Chilling for longer than you would think is needed.
But it works in this.
And maybe obviously because there's a great soundtrack beneath it.
And I think the tone of like Halloween we're seeing like the pumpkins around.
We did see some kids trick or treating earlier.
It was during the day when the sun's out.
I'm convinced maybe they took the kids trick or treating earlier in the day.
The parents go out at night after they already took the kids.
But then we needed to see like a candy bag and have you reference it.
I agree. That's the only weird thing to me that I'm just going, yeah, but if they left, they probably go, take one piece of candy, here's the bowl, right?
Or people knocking on the door or something.
Yeah.
Because we've seen other franchises that take place on Halloween and they incorporate it, right?
Trick or treat does a great job of that.
Yeah.
In the one short, in one of the shorts that they do.
Yeah.
Yeah, that was one thing that did bug me after we brought it up that we're like,
oh, this is actually Halloween, except the movie pulls you in so well with this plot of like
where the F is this guy and where is he going to pop up along with the music that you kind of forget about it.
Because we're still getting to pumpkins, we still get to horror movies in the back.
Well, it's kind of the reverse for me.
It's not that I forgot about it.
It's that I didn't notice it until like halfway through where I was like, wait a second.
Me neither.
Yeah.
Isn't that Halloween?
Yes.
What is happening, but whatever, I think that that's probably a budget thing.
I think they probably couldn't have any more background actors.
Right.
They probably didn't want to lengthen the script.
I'm honestly okay with it.
Yeah.
It was a fine choice.
But would I like to see a couple more trick-or-treaters or at least a line or two from the kids?
Like, we never get to go out on Halloween.
Our parents always go out, like, please can you take this out for one, whatever, and just grab one piece of candy or something.
Something to explain why all the parents are gone because there's all the high school
curls on babysitting. They did say
this was on Halloween. Yeah.
Like, yeah. Yeah. And that's the
and it's the anniversary, which
is why he
you know, he put that headstone there.
Right. He killed his sister on the 31st
so he's out killing again.
Good for you. I guess that's
yeah, that's what he does. I guess he
kills on Halloween. Interesting to get an origin
story. We didn't get that for a lot
of our other big bads
until further down the line.
I remember with like the fire with
freddie right and then we see that like that's later on way later yeah uh yeah i yeah
tromp boy was later too yes exactly i mean we know about the the drowning pretty early
yeah yeah but i don't remember exactly when but the pop oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah anyway uh
to answer your question on this i thought that her version of final girl was awesome i believed that
she was like at one point she says she's too smart for the boys and i do believe she was smart
and innovative, and I like that in the final girl.
But I do also think, like, because it's her first time dealing with a serial killer,
I would like to see her grow from here.
Like, you never leave the knife.
Learn your lesson.
She kind of pick things up.
But she was my favorite character because she was so grounded and she was so kind and good
and helping with the babysitting and helping with her friends.
And, you know, she was the one who first clocked the car and she was paying attention to her surrounding.
So I thought that was really cool.
And overall tone, I think that the music really.
help with the tone. I like the way that this was shot, obviously being shot on film. It just
looks like gritty and grainy and cool. Yeah. Those long shots really worked for me. I also like
the color palette we were working with. There's a lot of green. And we had some pastels going on,
which is not the typical. And then the juxtaposition of that with later on the all the black
and blue shadows. That really, really worked for me. So overall, I think this is a really, really great
new franchise we're embarking on. And I'm excited to kind of go through from beginning to end,
even though I've seen some of the later ones,
I clearly am missing a lot.
Right.
And even you saying, you know, on film,
your favorite shot was when they're in the car
and it's kind of down alone.
We're facing both of the characters.
And those characters, I mean, on film,
it's hard to pull a focus if you're not right.
We've got to clean the gate, put new film in.
Neither of them and their eyes were in focus.
It was their hands and the windshield.
And I don't know if that was on purpose or not,
but either way, it didn't bother me.
Didn't bother me at all.
I wasn't thinking rack focus, guys.
No, I was just, we're chilling.
And I loved the perspective of it.
It was just a little bit different.
And it might have been an actual choice.
Yeah, they were like, you know, I don't know.
Very cool.
But it was awesome.
Tara, any final thoughts on watching Halloween for the first time,
my Scream Queen?
I'm stoked on it.
I really do.
I love this.
I'm glad to know now.
Like, I knew who Michael Myers was, but now since I'm such a huge,
overall Halloween fan
I like being brought into this and I'm like
oh I now know what the deal is with them
I know what the deal is this is good for me
clap your hands everybody
you're getting strangled clap those hands
this we know if you're trying to learn to drive
just pop on that television yep
you'll learn it in no time on that note
we'll see you guys for the next one's Halloween 2
I think so all right we'll see you guys for
Halloween 2 later rejects
Thank you.
