Roxy Striar and Tara Erickson dive into Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982), the most unique and divisive entry in John Carpenter’s legendary slasher franchise. Directed by Tommy Lee Wallace (It, Fright Night Part 2), this film famously departs from the Michael Myers storyline and instead delivers a chilling standalone tale centered on the sinister Silver Shamrock mask company. The movie stars Tom Atkins (The Fog, Night of the Creeps) as Dr. Dan Challis, who teams up with Ellie Grimbridge, played by Stacey Nelkin (Bullets Over Broadway), to investigate a horrifying conspiracy. Dan O’Herlihy (RoboCop, The Last Starfighter) gives an unforgettable performance as Conal Cochran, the mastermind behind the masks, whose terrifying Halloween broadcast threatens children everywhere. With its eerie “Silver Shamrock” jingle, disturbing imagery, and shocking ending, Halloween III has become a cult favorite and a cornerstone of horror discussions. Though controversial at release, the film has earned its place in horror history as one of the most daring sequels ever made. Starting point is 00:01:50 More on them very soon. We love you by. Should we start? Yeah, I'm just a little nervous because what is this going to be? Here we go. We don't know. I guess count us in, Tara. Okay, three, two, one.
Starting point is 00:02:04 I clicked it. All right, citizens, the Reject Nation, uh, thank you for watching Halloween 3, the non-Hallowing movie, season of the Witch with us. That's not the holiday. It's just not the franchise. Uh, thank you so much to Prepper for helping add us down. If you don't already follow us on social media. Real Rejects. We've been posting a lot of great behind-the-scenes stuff, different events that we're going to, reviews, podcast clips, just all the good juice. So you want to make sure you follow us over there. This is Horror Thursday. So, of course, Tara and I are on this Halloween binge. And this is a little bit of a deviation of the Halloween franchise. So I'm curious to see what the Patreon questions are from you guys. If you're patron, you could submit questions. And I honestly, honestly,
Starting point is 00:02:57 Honestly, a lot of times I like to start with the review, but I don't even want to... I just want to go to our Patreon questions and see what it is that you guys have to say. So jumping right into it, here we go. Lobster. Halloween, fun fact, Halloween was supposed to be an anthology series of movies.
Starting point is 00:03:15 Every year on Halloween, it would be a different story. But Michael Myers got really popular, so they made it a Michael series after this. Do you think they should have kept it in anthology? No. I think that they shouldn't have ever made it an anthology. Correct. I think they made the right move with Michael.
Starting point is 00:03:34 Michael was the whole move. Yeah. Yeah, so that's a no from me. A Halloween anthology series is a cool idea. It is. But it's a little bit like trick-or-treat, which I know you didn't like, right? No, I want to see it again because everybody says, I just didn't love it. I didn't love the lack of connection.
Starting point is 00:03:55 I just didn't love it. But that wasn't one movie. That wasn't each movie a different thing. Exactly. Yes, you're right. It was like the little short stories, which I guess if they turned trick or treat into like each one was a full film.
Starting point is 00:04:07 Movie I might have liked it better. Then, yeah. All right, thank you for the question, Lobster. Brian Reed. Why do you think the directors decided to make Halloween three a stand-home story without Michael Myers and how does that affect the film's legacy
Starting point is 00:04:21 with the Halloween franchise? Tara, so I think the question above from Lobster gave us the answer to Brian. Ryan Reid's question, but I am curious from you, do you think that this movie, when it's, when they're asking the legacy of the Halloween franchise, how are you thinking people talk about this movie? Because we don't know, I guess. I think they probably go like, oh, yeah, three doesn't count.
Starting point is 00:04:44 I kind of feel the same way. I think they just stay, they go, seeing it doesn't count. It's not that it was a bad movie, though. It just was not what I was hoping for or expecting. And it was slow. It was slow. Like, it was okay. It wasn't, like, terrible, but I'm curious why the ending did drag.
Starting point is 00:05:02 It took so long where I'm like, we could have just cut to him saving the girl. Get in there. And then also, at the end with the stonehenge and it circles the witchcraft thing and kills him. I'm like, what? I didn't. I don't even know if it did kill him. I know. Or maybe he went into the stone.
Starting point is 00:05:22 Yeah. I don't know. It would have cool for it to be a little more witchy. and less robot too because season of the witch I'm sure we'll talk more about that I'm with you Michael Medina Katheria Halloween
Starting point is 00:05:35 the cults of Shijak queens hell yeah excited you guys are still watching this but sure there's going to be a lot of where's Michael in the reaction hoping you guys will be able to still enjoy the film but I get if it's too jarring there's some really great practical effects in the film did you enjoy them any
Starting point is 00:05:51 favorite moments also this film heavily leaned into the occult and specifically ancient pagan slash droid slash Celtic lore with the sacrifice of children and Sam Hain. How do you say that? Did you find this interesting at all? Love y'all. Big hugs. Michael. Appreciate you. All right. So on the first part of this, did you enjoy, did you enjoy, even though there, where's Michael? did you enjoy the practical effects? Yeah, my favorite one was the car blow up in the very beginning. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:30 That was great. Yeah. I'm with you. I enjoyed the practical effects. Oh, also when the misfire, the girl's face, great, great practical. That was really good. I also think we didn't have as much where as Michael because before this started, I told you guys the comments were like, this is going to be weird, it's going to be weird, whatever it is. So it's like, we knew something was coming.
Starting point is 00:06:52 We knew something was weird. Yeah, something was off. How about any favorite moments? Was it the practical effect moments that are your favorite moments? I like when he blew himself up in the car because it was just so, so shocking. Yep. The bug stuff all looked great, too. The bug stuff was very good.
Starting point is 00:07:12 Yeah, that was great. And the snake came out of there. That was fun. Did you find the pagan slash lore of this all to be interesting? I kind of wish they died more into that if that was going to be the point. Like we waited so long to hear about it. Yeah. And if we're talking witchcraft here, which is what they're saying, he even commented, like, witchcraft.
Starting point is 00:07:36 I'm like, well, then show us a little more of that. But it was called Season of the Witch, so we always knew there was going to be something. So it wasn't like that big of a bait and switch. So, like, either make it a real reveal and don't call the title of the movie or introduce it early and deep down. into it? Yeah, because it was like, yeah, I mean, I found it intriguing, but I think due to the pace of the movie, I wasn't as excited by it as I should be because I do not think that the writing was that good for him to look up at him and go like, I was literally like, I don't know what's happening. I don't know. I don't know. You're not being strangled, so why is he clapping? Why are you
Starting point is 00:08:19 clapping if you're not being strangled. What are you clapping about? We need to send him to a timeout. Thank goodness the Stonehead Witchcraft killed him. Jaden Rhodes, Halloween 3. This movie gets a lot of hate for the lack of Michael, but I can't help it. I love this movie.
Starting point is 00:08:36 But I'm curious what y'all thought about the main character. You personally, I don't care for him. I'm very excited to see y'all's reaction to this movie. Tara, it's very interesting to not like a main character. Right, but you love the movie. Because it didn't sound like in an always sunny in Philadelphia or Seinfeld way where you're like, oh, there's characters flawed and I don't like them. It sounds like you actually just didn't enjoy the main character.
Starting point is 00:08:58 Right. How did you feel about our lead guy? I mean, you know what? I'm a little bit with Jaden because at first I was like, why? I didn't think he was bad. But I still was a little bit like, why did we? cast him. Him specifically as the lead.
Starting point is 00:09:22 Why? I didn't get a vibe. I didn't pick it up to go like, ah, that's why we did that. Yeah. There was nothing like he was kind of being annoying to his baby mama, not telling her things.
Starting point is 00:09:36 He like fell in love with this girl in 0.2 seconds. Totally. He was not an amazing doctor considering he went to take a nap during his shift. And that's when all this happened. And then he left to,
Starting point is 00:09:49 go on the hunt like he just there was nothing or I was like I love this guy and maybe I would like the movie better if our protagonist was somebody that I was like really rooting for I like I like the girl I like the girl too I agree with that because I had her dad to avenge had he made the right the more of the right moves with like with her and not been touching the nurses but in the beginning and then the other lady at the more kisses it it was like confusing yeah that was a little bit Like, why is everyone after this guy? I don't find him that attractive. I'll just tell you that.

Jackson Ryan, for myself looking at this movie as an Elseworld's movie is the only way it works for me. This goes right next to Megan. in 2.0 in the sense of taking a film and 180 the sequels away from the source, 180 the sequel away from the source. The studio thought it would be a good idea
Starting point is 00:12:26 to make Halloween into an anthology series for various stories, which explains this plot. However, you can't whiplash audiences like that. Didn't work in the 80s, doesn't work today. After freshly watching 1 and 2, how do you feel about this entry here? Tara? I don't think we feel great about it.
Starting point is 00:12:44 I think we feel okay with it. I think it would have done a lot better if it was not associated with the franchise at all. Yeah. I mean, the writing could have been better. At some points, there was no writing. I mean, there was just silence. I think they were just like,
Starting point is 00:13:04 we have to get to witchcraft. How do we get there at the end? And then have the stone kill the guy with the circle, witchcraft circle. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Jay Rochton, okay, were you confused by this entry? And what do you think of the plot?
Starting point is 00:13:25 I didn't actually feel confused. I felt sleepy and a little annoyed, even though I liked some of it. Yeah, I'm with you on that. I think the annoyance came, like, we wanted context and motivation before. Yeah. Not waiting till the very end.
Starting point is 00:13:41 And if it's at the very end, it should be a real like mind-blown we were not and he's like we're Celtic and this is how it was back in the day I had to make sacrifices I'm like okay get it knew that because shamrock and figure and season of the witch okay wellsy McPherson Halloween tell us how you really feel about the family how the family dies in front of the TV I mean it's cool the bugs were a lot the bugs were a lot and that looked good it looked really good I don't really understand the bugs aspect, though. Like, what's happening?
Starting point is 00:14:17 Never explained. No. Never explained. Robert Ross, Halloween 3, changes up the subgenre of horror movie to be more of a supernatural body horror movie over slasher. Which style of horror film do you prefer, and which affects you more? Do you prefer slasher's, or do you prefer body horror movies? I mean...
Starting point is 00:14:43 I think I would go with supernatural horror, but I think, no, I was going to say I would go with both. I'm more going to be more slasher. But this is, if this is the supernatural that we're going off of, I don't want it, but if maybe a different movie. I love both supernatural body horror and slasher horror. I think that like there's merit for both completely so I don't really have one that I prefer in terms of like if you're at the best of what you do then you're the best at what you do this wasn't the best at what they could do though but which affects me more is probably body horror because like usually when things are gross yeah yeah totally gnarly hate that
Starting point is 00:15:37 too. Hassada Ali, thank you, Asana, do you think Season of the Witch would have been successful at the box office if it wasn't part of a Halloween franchise?
Starting point is 00:15:47 So that's making me think it wasn't successful at the box office, which we haven't booked up, but I think is a fair assumption. I think it would have been maybe more successful. Yeah, because people
Starting point is 00:15:57 are literally going to be running out of that movie theater on Friday going, this isn't a Halloween movie. Lori's not in it. Michael Myers isn't in it. And then they're like, Nobody's going to see it then because they're like, what?
Starting point is 00:16:10 Why would they do that to us? Yeah, Tara said it perfect. Last question. Thank you so much, Angela Vance. Do you think the Halloween movies would have lasted this long without Jamie Lee Curtis? That's an interesting question for this movie specifically. What's your answer to this, Tara? This long.
Starting point is 00:16:28 I don't, I don't think so. Bless you. Thank you. I think because she is his, sister right we find out i don't know about that terror because i'm telling you the only one that i've seen and i remember is the most recent one and that wasn't there so they might maybe they're right maybe they find out in a movie maybe we find out that that was a lie i i don't know how or maybe it was there and they just don't mention it i'm confused yeah because they did mention it in the
Starting point is 00:16:58 in the first or the second i forget and then i was like oh that's his that's his sister right yeah the second and then where this is the fourth No, this is the third. Anyway, I think when you have really, really great writing, you can get away with not casting Jamie Lee Curtis in a different lead, but we wouldn't have the story. The story is that Michael Myers survives fires, and you can, like, shoot him a million times.
Starting point is 00:17:27 You don't know why. And he wants to kill his sisters. And other people. That is the story. So it makes it way more fun if we continue with that and we continue with Jamie Lee Curtis. That keeps audiences coming back because you're like, what in the actual F? And because she was a really good final girl, I don't think it could have done as well without her because I do believe people would be upset. I agree.
Starting point is 00:17:54 I think final girls are final girls for a reason. I think there's a reason that the Terrifier franchise did better once they introduced Sierra, Sienna, whatever her name is. I think that Sydney Prescott for Scream, I think that we had Nancy. I think that, like, people like somebody to hold on to. Yep. It's not always necessary, but I think Jamie Lee Curtis is a really good one. And this movie clearly suffered without her. I don't know the answer to this, but I bet she's in the rest of them.
Starting point is 00:18:24 Yeah, I'm really hoping so. I'm really hoping so that they went, well, that was a fail. Let's keep it where it worked. Yeah. Well, thank you for the Patreon questions. Final thoughts on this movie for me, Tara, are that there were parts of this that worked. I wish it wasn't a Halloween movie. I think that it would have been really nice to end out like almost a trilogy when we had so many questions about the second movie. And it would have been really cool to see where that went.
Starting point is 00:18:55 I'm hoping that for the fourth movie, we just kind of pretend like this didn't happen and go back to that. But I'm not sure if that's where we're going. still into this franchise and still felt like this was worthy but the pacing was a nightmare the score was great the I liked the girl those are my thoughts
Starting point is 00:19:14 I'm with her on it because of this movie I am very excited for four because I'm going to go wait are we going to get back to the beginning of the slow pushing on a jackalatin on a jackal lantern are we're going to get to see Michael Myers and like Lori I'm in that
Starting point is 00:19:30 that makes me even more excited because of what they gave us. So maybe he did something right. Those are our thoughts. Yeah, that's my thought. I agree with everything else she said. I mean, I already said. I don't love this movie,
Starting point is 00:19:42 but the soundtrack is always good. Yep, always. Do you always appreciate that. And yeah, there you have it. Well, Halloween, we will see you for the fourth one.
