Jackie Bonsignore & Jon Maturan watch Halloween H20: 20 Years Later for the first time in this full movie reaction and review! Twenty years after surviving Michael Myers, Laurie Strode is living under a new identity as the headmistress of a secluded California school—but the trauma of Haddonfield has never left her. Jackie & Jon react to Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s brutal opening death, Michael’s return, Laurie and Michael coming face-to-face through the school gate, Janet Leigh’s Psycho tribute, Laurie grabbing the axe, and that unforgettable decapitation ending! Halloween H20: 20 Years Later Full Movie Reaction Watch Along: / thereelrejects Directed by Steve Miner (Friday the 13th Part 2, Lake Placid), Halloween H20 stars Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode/Keri Tate (True Lies, Knives Out), Josh Hartnett as John Tate (Black Hawk Down, Penny Dreadful), Michelle Williams as Molly Cartwell (Brokeback Mountain, The Fabelmans), Adam Arkin as Will Brennan (Chicago Hope, Get Shorty), LL Cool J as Ronny Jones (Deep Blue Sea, NCIS: Los Angeles), Janet Leigh as Norma Watson (Psycho, Touch of Evil), Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jimmy Howell (Inception, Looper), and Chris Durand as Michael Myers (Armageddon, The Mask). After the reaction, Jackie & Jon discuss Jamie Lee Curtis’ more traumatized version of Laurie Strode, the movie’s late-’90s slasher style, its decision to continue from Halloween II while ignoring Parts 4–6, the different Michael Myers masks, Janet Leigh’s meta cameo, and whether H20 delivers the most satisfying ending in the franchise. I'm having
thank God
yeah thank God
this was a ride
thank God I'm so happy
I'm so happy I'm so happy
I was so upset after
Halloween 5 and 6
yes definitely
what are you feeling how do you feel
how do you feel like
what made this one stand out for you
who okay
this was actually pretty cool
I like this a lot
I liked how it
retcons 4 through 6
I do like the fact that it
is it does remind me of scream,
but it, because it came at the same time.
And there was like a scream nod, right?
To the, to the, what's it called?
In the movie.
So, but ultimately, I enjoyed myself a lot.
Really fun.
Michael is sinister, but also smart.
He was hanging from the thing.
That was pretty sick.
He was so much faster and, like, more aggressive, I feel like.
No, yeah.
And yeah, I enjoyed myself a lot.
It was really cool and fun and crazy.
I like the aesthetic.
It takes place in California.
So that's pretty cool.
Yeah, I don't know how I feel if it's better than the 2018 trilogy, in my opinion.
I do like 2018, the movie Halloween a little bit more, but I know that's not how you feel.
So, but yeah, this was entertaining.
This is fun.
I wanted to see more Josh Hartnett, to be honest, but like I guess...
Oh, more of John being more of a fighter, because we just got that one scene with him and his girlfriend.
And to even recognize, hey, my mom was right this whole time.
I wanted that.
But, like, I guess it was Lori Strode's story.
So, and to see finally a freaking beheading.
Mm-hmm.
Finally.
But, yeah, I enjoy the writing.
It was really clever.
The suspense was there.
The Joseph Gordon Levitt, like, Drew Barrymore cameo where he dies at the end.
Very cool.
Ultimately, very fun film.
Better than the fewer that we've seen.
Or the earlier,
earlier,
earlier ones that we've seen.
But yeah,
I still like the first one.
I still like the 2018 trilogy,
more so the 2018 movie.
The first two of the trilogy or all three?
No,
I like the first one.
Halloween kills and Halloween ends kind of just,
yeah.
But yeah,
still excited to see where this goes.
I don't know
this continues.
I actually don't know.
Yeah, I don't know.
Are we done here?
I don't know.
You tell me how you feel about everything.
It seemed like you really enjoyed yourself.
I loved this one.
I think I said it during the review.
I think that the direction, I really loved the direction of it.
It was a lot, there were a lot more fancy camera tricks that I think really served the story.
And normally, like, I'm not really a huge fan.
I feel like sometimes it can be a bit pretentious if the humanity and the characters and like the story doesn't, if it lacks the complexity.
But it really like, it really supported the story that they were telling.
I think that this is one of my favorite depictions of Jamie Lee Curtis's character.
One of my favorite iterations of Lori Strode.
I think the setting was so fun and fresh and different.
And also it was just, I mean, I said, I said this with four and five.
and six.
I said this is four or five and six.
But those movies,
the ones with Jamie,
Jamie Lloyd,
those stressed me the fuck out in a way that like it was not fun to watch.
Now this,
it has the fun slasher kills.
It has the great jump scares.
But also it's genuinely fun to watch.
There was really great dialogue.
It was just,
yeah,
I'm really,
it made it worth it to drudge through four or five.
and six because I think it just made me like really enjoyed this one so much more.
Right, right, right.
I loved it.
It was awesome.
Yeah, coming from those films to this one was refreshing.
And we get the most humanity that we've seen with Michael because, oh, my main point,
and I said this earlier, but just going to repeat it.
The fact that we can see him so much through the mask in this one, I think it really goes
back to what made the original Halloween, the original Halloween works so well, which is,
it's the idea that evil can be anyone in anywhere.
And that's what's really scary.
Yeah.
Especially like looking at it through a lens of, obviously so many of these movies and
the franchise are about Lori Strode and her suffering from PTSD.
Like that's everyone's ultimate fear, right?
Like you spend 20 years trying to, like, abate your symptoms and convincing, like,
that one, what really, the, the one scene that keeps flinging my mind is when she sees him walking
and she's just.
Yeah, yeah.
No, we can't be there.
No, we can't be there.
No, if it's a hallucination or not.
Yeah.
And then to have to spend like multiple decades trying to get better and not have it
consume your life and then to be proven that your body was right.
Yeah, your nervous system was telling you something.
Yeah.
I love it.
I loved this.
I thought it was so smart, so clever.
I thought it was great.
I loved all the characters.
I cared about all the characters.
I haven't always cared about it.
No, that's fine.
And also, like, yeah, I don't know how you feel about this,
but like there was a little,
it was not heavy-handed with the,
with the nods to the original trilogy,
ever with the original movies.
It was just enough to be tasteful.
But ultimately, yeah, this is executed really well,
like you said, the writing, the directing.
Very, very, very well executed, for sure.
All right, should we get into some questions?
Let's do it, yeah, yeah.
Jaden Rohn,
says, I'm very curious how y'all compare this to Halloween 2018.
I really feel like they handled Lori so much better here.
Ooh, good question.
I, yeah, I think so too.
I like that in this one she is a huge, huge fighter still.
Like, we still have that with her, but it's kind of without going over the edge or to this extreme
where she's almost a caricature of herself.
I also like that in this one,
it's very obvious that Lori has been going to therapy, has been doing the work.
She's trying her best to be a mother, but she also understands that, you know, she has shortcomings still.
And like her and her son, we're working it out in a way that, like, I think that those arguments are very common for 17-year-olds and their moms.
I know that I had a bunch of those with mine.
Sure, sure.
I really, yeah, I thought it was handled very well in a way that felt respectful to the character of Lori.
No, I agree.
I think this one is a more grounded version of what Lori would have gone through after something tragic, right?
She still pursue her life as someone like a career woman being like a, because oh, my earring just fell out.
No.
Are you okay?
Okay, no, yeah, I'll check later.
But anyways, no, no, no.
I think the fact that, you know, in the very first 1978 movie shows that she was like,
a bookworm, like a very studious students.
And then she becomes like a headmistress of a school.
Makes a lot of sense and still does the work because something traumatic.
Versus 2018 straight survivor, which is cool and has this cool factor to it, but isn't as grounded.
Like this seems a little more grounded to reality.
And what you could expect.
The new trilogy is just like camp, I feel like.
Yeah, new trilogy is just like.
I'm not our trying to be.
She's like, she's got all this weapons and all that stuff.
So, which kind of makes sense.
Which is fun to watch.
Sure, sure.
It was fun to watch, but not, I don't know.
Yeah, yeah, it's hard.
It's entertaining, but I wouldn't call it like, like, a masterpiece.
No, definitely.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
This one, I'm like, this feels like a masterpiece in terms of.
This was fun.
Yeah.
Like, scary movie genre.
You know, the horror, of course, of course.
I think that's, I think it has that reputation for sure because, like, it did leave a mark and, like,
this is always.
from my understanding in the zeitgeist
in terms of the conversation
of the Halloween trilogy, or the Halloween franchise
for sure. But yeah, I think
I like, I like 2018, but I also
like this version as well. So it depends on the day
for me for sure.
All right. So last
year, I made this whole big production
out of like getting into clean enough shape to get
a six-pack photo and I proved I could do it.
And this year, my weight has been
remarkably more adventurous.
I just got back from a full week in
New York where basically every meal
became an event. I mean an event. Went to bed hating myself, a lot of binge eating. And it was kind of a
wake-up call because I've been doing that a little too often. Came back feeling bloated. Some weight gain.
Had to get reality with that. And now I'm committed to be more consistent, even on weekends, at least until
Halloween is here. And one thing I've been using in my day-to-day, Huel. I use it during my cut,
and I never stopped using them actually even after. Our fridges here are stocked with the bottles.
But now that I'm really watching what I eat for a few weeks, it's one of the things that I'm consistently
taking still because I don't need every meal to be perfect. I need one decision that's easy to repeat.
And Hewell Black Edition powder starts out less than $3 per meal, has 40 grams of protein, mixes with water or milk in about 30 seconds, and it's a complete meal you have instead of food.
Not a shake on top of food. You put a shake like here with 27 essential vitamins and minerals and no artificial sweeteners, colors, or flavors.
Although I do love mixing it with my yogurt, particularly the banana flavor. And the RTD bottle is that.
The grabbing go version, 35 grams of protein, seven grabs of fiber under five bucks a meal.
The chocolate peanut butter is my main jam.
Thanks, Koi, for leaving and going off to Ireland.
And now I'm leaving me with no chocolate peanut butter.
Again, you are so consistent at that.
Anyway, new customers, they get 15% off online at huel.com slash rejects with code rejects.
New customers only.
Thanks, Hewell, for partnering and supporting real rejects.
Yet again, my God, I love your product.
Next question.
All right.
let's go to Hesnia Ali
Halloween H20
who is your favorite child of Loris Strode
Jamie Lloyd from Colt of Thorne
Timeline Halloween 4, 5, and 6
second one John Tate from
Halloween H2O or H20
or Karen from the David
Gordon Green trilogy
Halloween 2018 and Halloween
Kills
What's unfortunate is we only
so far from our
watches, we only get one movie with John Tate.
I think that that's it.
Yeah.
So unless there's more, but yeah, it seems like, you know, Josh Hartnett's character is only
in this movie.
Yeah.
With Karen, we get two movies and she does unfortunately die in the Halloween kills, which
is unfortunate.
But because of the lack of time we have with John, it's kind of unfair to compare.
I like Karen as a character because there's a complexity of like.
My mom kind of abused me with survival instincts and tactics versus John is just a 17-year-old,
which probably could have had so much more range.
I know.
I wish that we had more time with him.
And then Jamie Lloyd is just the first.
She's the best actress.
Yeah.
Four and five, especially in four, you really feel for her.
And like it's dramatic and intense.
But I do prefer Karen because, again, there's so much to do with that one.
But how about you?
Jamie Lloyd is the best.
acting performance, like no argument.
Yeah, I agree.
And then a hot take, I'm going to prefer,
I prefer John Tate as,
in terms of who's my favorite child
because I like his relationship with Lori.
I kind of don't like that in the David Gordon Green trilogy,
we have Lori being this like bad parent.
I don't like the idea that her,
I just don't like that choice of making it
so that her being so haunted, like, caused her to not be protective and, like, kind of, like,
turns her into, like, an abusive, like, neglectful, over-controlling mother because...
Good point.
I just don't think that that's in her nature.
That wasn't in her nature in the first Halloween film.
Yes.
She cared about those kids, you know?
She was a babysitter.
I didn't like it.
She was a great babysitter first and foremost.
That's going to translate.
That's what I think.
Good point.
I like that.
Okay.
Quick question, or quick...
I'm going into...
order here based off of the Patreon.
So I'm just going to insert some
trivia here. Dan Gahan writes in and says
there are four different masks used in
this filming. The H-6 mask is used
in the opening. A mask by K&B
productions was used for most photography.
The mask used in most of the close-ups
by Stan Winston Studios
and the awful CGI mask
for Jumanji Kids desk.
Who is Jumongi Kid?
Wait, who is this?
Jumangi Kid.
Was that the, yeah, was that
the friend who get in the elevator?
Probably the friend.
Yeah, yeah.
Interesting.
Cool.
And then Jamie Gore says, writes in and says,
hi, Jamie.
I guess this question is more so for Jackie.
John, if you can see.
Bye.
Which franchise between Friday and Halloween would you say has better endings to the movies?
I always thought Halloween had some amazing endings with the original Halloween 4, Halloween 20, and 2018.
Hmm.
Comparison.
I know.
That's like such a specific question.
I'm like, no, no, no, no, no.
Which franchise between Friday and Halloween, would you say?
I mean, right now, I feel like I want to say Halloween, you know, especially with this one.
But then again, I don't know, because we were really freaking pissed off at what was the ending of Halloween 4, Halloween 5.
Yeah.
You know?
Yes.
I think, okay, final answer is I think that Halloween can have, like, overall has better endings.
I just think that the frequency and the odds of whether or not you're going to get a good ending is kind of like it's not very consistent.
Yes.
So I would say I feel consistently Friday has better endings.
Like ratio wise.
Right, right, right, right.
But that ending will like never, I feel like match up to, that was the, I loved this is the best ending that I've seen in the Halloween ones.
Yeah.
I like Halloween 3's ending because it was an anthology.
I like Halloween 3's ending.
And then yelling into the camera like, no, that's pretty cool.
so all right you want to take this one
all right thanks dude
it's a big one do you want me to read it
no I got you got your head no I guess so there's a question right
Halloween age 20
I think it's safe to assume that you guys really like this film
and I definitely used to
used to however as time has gone on
I actually look back in on the Thorne trilogy
more fondly what okay noah we disagree with you
because at least they had the great
Halloween spooky atmosphere good cast
and characters and they were more ballsy with choices
they made for better or for worse.
Besides the great opening and ending
as well as Jamie Lee Curtis giving her best
Lori performance. That is true.
This film is very bland to me.
Oh my gosh. Okay.
I feel too much like scream because yeah
I guess it was yeah. It does feel a lot like
scream but screams good so.
No, I agree. Yeah, I find this teen casting
cast boring.
Chris Duren is my least favorite Michael.
How I love to him is Michael. Yeah, he was cool.
Most of the masks in the film sucks.
I like the masks.
The scare factor is not
Exist. I was terrified. I was really terrified, actually.
And this film doesn't address the plot hole
that Michael's 20 year absence.
That's true. I can see that. Okay.
This Michael wasn't... How do you pronounce?
What word is that? Comatose.
Comatose.
Yeah, like Halloween 4.
With all of that being said, if you guys
could change one thing about the movie,
what would it be? You know what? If I could change
one thing, I would address the plot hole
because you're right, and I didn't realize that. And that's the
only thing that I would change. It would be,
and you know what, how I would
fucking change that is freaking writer so she tells either like she tells the boyfriend or her son
ends up telling someone and then it could literally just be like a like a phone call like something
like something that exposes her in witness protection it could be really quick yes yes I agree
I thought this one was great in Halloween and very autumnal and I said that and no I don't agree
with you okay fair I wouldn't really change anything it was really it was really yeah
It was really cool.
I liked it.
I would have probably added something.
I don't know why.
I think if this was,
if this in 2018 were linked somehow,
I think I would have liked that.
All right.
Okay, we're going to have to speed around these questions
because I have another shoot after this.
Yeah, you're good.
You're good.
All right.
Leandro 3 says,
Question 1.
This film ignores the Jamie Lloyd trilogy 4 to 6
and starts a new timeline
that only involves Halloween 1 and 2.
There was a script attempt to connect them all,
but the director chose to just start fresh
and not involve the curse of Thorne,
reference Jamie Lloyd. Good. Part 6, curse was left open so that more sequels could have explored
the whole townspeople involvement on the Thorne curse and Dr. Loomis is the new man in black.
Oh. But this film retcons this storyline of Michael Myers and he goes back to just being simply evil.
Good. How would have y'all explained Michael Myers' supernatural elements and do you think this
film did good on just going back to me instead of trying to explain everything like part six did?
Fuck the supernatural elements. Yes. Fuck the cult of thorn. That shit was ass.
the right decision was made
and also we should have never even
what the hell was that
what I wish that I could get back
those hours of my life
your turn
she said it all
back to basics I agree
I'll keep it like that's what worked in the original
and now we're back that's what I said
that's what I said by that
yep
all right
Leon O3
this is second question
Halloween H2O question two
this film in
infamously has the worst rendition of Myers
as nobody really decided how the mask should look.
Interesting. And four masks were used throughout the filming.
We said that, including a CGI one.
Also, Chris Duren, Michael chose not to watch.
Whoa, any Halloween feels and just did his own thing.
Interesting.
But Michael Myers comes as very clumsy or walks weird at times.
I didn't notice that.
I liked it.
Yeah, which makes him look more like an imposter or copycat.
Interesting.
Also, the mask sits too hot.
sits too tight on his face and can clearly see the active blue eyes.
I didn't mind that, yeah.
Which in the prior films, his eyes were darkened to reference the blackest eyes.
That's true.
Okay, yeah, I can see that quote from the late Dr. Lemus.
But the Halloween 6 mask was used during the opening kill of the nurse Marion Chambers.
It was her.
It was her, yeah.
She was in blow-a-law.
H-1, H-2, and kills.
How do you think y'all version of this Michael-March compares to the previous portrays?
and do you think the mask is better on the film or part six?
I love this mask.
I love that you can see the humanity.
Again, that is what makes him scary.
Yeah.
Is that it can be anyone anywhere.
It could be your own damn brother, you know?
Yeah.
And also, I think the blackest eyes, the devil's eyes, it doesn't have to be literal.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
It just means that there's no feeling, no compassion there.
Right, right.
It's blink, you know?
And also, I like that.
I think that it can make sense that Michael comes back and like he's been looking for her for 20 years.
Like yeah, he's walking faster.
He's like this shit's taking too long.
And also I don't like the it's sitting too tight.
I think that a lot of people have this idea of what Michael should be and why.
Right.
Right.
Right.
Right.
Honestly, the imposter slash copycat thing, I didn't like how Halloween ends did it.
Therefore, I appreciate this.
Because again, the Cody, right?
Yeah.
That character was that imposterouser.
Yeah.
Oh, my God.
I also want to erase that film from memory.
Yeah, exactly.
So I didn't mind this at all.
And he was a little different, like he was hanging from the ceiling, which is pretty cool.
But otherwise, yeah, I had no real qualms with the mask or how he was walking.
It was still fun.
I still liked it.
Yeah.
Oh, my turn.
R.C.
Flores writes in and says, P.J. Souls, the actresses who played Lori's friend Linda was
offered Norma's part. However, the part ended up going to the most famous horror movie actress,
Janet Lee, Jamie Lee's mom. Ah, yes. The car Norma drives is actually the same car she drives in Psycho.
Do you think these stunt castings add charm to the movie, or are they more of a distraction?
I think they add a lot of charm. I think that that's so fun. I think that's such a beautiful homage,
you know? The nod to anything that comes before you, but it's not heavy-handed is executed
beautifully. I think it works out. Holy crap. There's a lot. Okay. I know. Wait, no, these are Friday
the 13th. Okay, cool. Um, oh my god. Okay, we're gonna go. Um, let me see. That, da, da, da, da, da, that
that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that,
uh, one day, diga, diga, dig, dig, dig, d'a, yeah, yeah. Okay, that is true if yeah, that I'm going to
skip for now because we are running out of time here. Um, um, no. You want me to take Alan Smith?
Yeah, take that one.
Alan Smith, he asks,
Hey, Alan.
My friend from film school is a producer on H2O.
I got to go to the premiere and met Jamie Lee.
Oh my God, great experience.
Do you think the Halloween film is a return to form from the franchise
after some not great sequels?
Yes, I think if it wasn't for this one, I mean,
my heart goes out to you Halloween fans.
Like, I did not know what you guys have been through.
Right, right, right.
I'm so sorry.
Yeah.
I'm so sorry.
Yeah.
If this film did not exist, I would trash the whole franchise.
I'm sorry.
It wouldn't be worth it.
It wouldn't be worth it for me.
I like to return to form.
Yes.
Thank you, Alan.
This saves it.
Stephanie Bree says, Jackie and John, this is one of those movies in the franchise that
starts a new timeline.
At this point, has the popcorn timeline become jarring?
Or do you think you have your bearings?
And of the three timelines that you have experienced, which one is your favorite?
Obviously, not counting season of the witch.
One, two, and 20.
yeah absolutely right right and when i raise my children we will be watching one two and twenty and we will be
watching nothing else fair fair none of the others exist absolutely not none of the others exist like no bye i'm
never watching any i can firmly tell you guys i will never be rewatching any of those other movies again fair
i'll watch one two and twenty goodbye i kind of agree i do like the 2018 but one of the 2018 is fine
the first movie.
I don't know if it's worth a rewatch.
Kills and ends kind of is not the greatest, but yeah.
Okay, wait, hold on.
Okay, great.
Final question.
From Leon O'Neary.
Okay, you take it because I just took,
I just took that one.
The best one, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Wait, I thought I did.
It's fine.
Leon says, this film has a very distinctive 90s
scream or Dawson's Creek vibe because Kevin,
I know I love it,
because Kevin Williams also in a screen movie,
because Kevin Williamson, who wrote those franchises, also worked on this.
Plus, stock music from Scream 1 and 2, Mimic and other films,
is used throughout because Marco Bertrami did the score for all these films, including this one.
But the film loses some of the spooky Halloween atmosphere that was present on the Thorn trilogy and music originality.
Okay.
Also, this was pitched by Jamie Lee Curtis as a 20th anniversary celebration for H-1
and wanted John Carpenter and Deborah Hill to come back, but both declined.
Instead, Friday the 13th, part two, and three,
director Steve Minor directs this film.
Additionally, yeah, this was meant to end the series,
but of course it made a lot of money.
Oh.
Wait, there's another one?
I don't know.
There is another movie where I'm planned to watch.
I don't know.
We haven't gotten our schedule for next week yet,
so I don't know what's going on.
I just show up and I go, what is the movie?
Additionally, this was meant to end the series,
but of course it made a lot of money.
How do you all think this film stacks to all the Halloween films
you all have seen?
Did it age well,
or what changes would y'all have made?
My favorite.
It aged really well.
Yes.
No changes.
I didn't even think it was 1998.
Again, it executed well enough where, again, I love it.
Definitely.
Yeah.
The changes I would have made are not making four, five, and six.
Fair.
I had such a bad time.
I was crying through those reactions.
Guys, I had a bad time.
Fortunately, yeah.
All right.
And if you have an issue, here's a tissue.
All right. That's all for us today. What is there another one?
Apparently, yeah. Should I look it up?
Yeah, we are scheduled for the next one.
We are?
Yeah, next, oh, my bad.
I just wake up in the morning and I go, where am I going today?
It's okay. And that's true. I got to go, you guys, because I'm going on to, I'm about to shoot Friday the 13th, part seven with page.
There we go. I'm doing a costume change, so.
Nice.
We'll see you later.
Bye.
