In this genre-defying film, Jessica Rothe (La La Land, Boy Kills World) delivers a standout performance as Tree Gelbman—a college student trapped in a time loop where she relives the day of her murder over and over again. Each reset forces Tree to confront her past mistakes, unravel the mystery behind her untimely death, and discover unexpected moments of humor amid the terror. Under the direction of Christopher Landon (Freaky, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones), the film masterfully balances spine-tingling suspense with laugh-out-loud moments. Roxy & Tara break down every iconic scene—from the nerve-wracking murder sequences (Driven to Murder Scene, Locker Room Attack Scene, Back in the Loop Scene, Welcome to the Pleasure Dome, & beyond!) to the clever, self-aware twists that set this film apart from traditional slasher fare. make sure you're a patron let's break it down my fellow she eject my horror horror my scream queen
my terra how'd you feel about that i love this movie i i really like it i thought it was a lot of fun
in the beginning you kind of think like okay we get it it's the repetition um they they start
switching it up slightly in the second day but in our heads the way that it was going is like oh
this has to obviously change her as a person.
And I think the way that they answered our questions by delaying the answers made it
even more fun because it's like you're kind of sitting there trying to figure out the puzzle
and it's not the easiest puzzle to figure out.
Again, there's some like, there's a few loopholes in there where you're like, there was a
couple times where like, wait, why would they do that?
But all in all, it was a blast.
And I thought it was a lot of fun trying to go like, wait, trying to figure out the puzzle.
and day by day, she changes a little bit,
becomes a better person,
and how do we sort of beat the clock in a way?
Yeah, I'm super with you.
I liked the pacing of this.
I like how it does unfold.
I think it's cool that when we find out
it's that serial killer,
that it wasn't, in fact, actually, that serial killer.
Right.
That was more of a setup,
which makes more sense because it made more personal
because I was just like, why?
Why is it this random guy?
I get that he wants to kill blondes, but I don't know.
Right.
But all that being said, I'm not sure in this exact moment how I feel about the fact that we have no explanation for why she keeps waking up.
Right, right.
You know, we have no explanation for that.
And some of the Groundhog Day type movies don't give an explanation, but a lot of them do.
There's some kind of like science to it or like, you know, had Carter been an engineering nerd or whatever and he had like figured out how to help around or whatever.
just kind of like why does she keep waking up or whether we got like any kind of message like
the universe protects certain people who they think that can be better I don't know anything like
I think they could have just taken an extra step to give us something even if it's not definitive
like a hint of why yeah especially because I do feel like and I'm sure in the comments you guys
are going to be like why are you guys so obsessed with him crouching down but you guys put him in
the corner in hiding I obviously was drawing direct correlations between reset or whatever
It's within the very first shot.
She opens her eyes, they go back, and you see his back.
And that's like, they're doing that intentionally.
Right, right.
And we see it so, so many times that I was just like, what's he doing down there?
Or why are we restarting?
Why are we resetting?
So as much as I really like this being a murder mystery, I like who they picked to be the murderer.
I like that it was a poison situation.
I like the decoy of the serial killer.
I liked how we tried to eliminate all of the suspects.
I loved the characters.
I thought the music was bomb.
This really had all the elements of an awesome, awesome movie.
Yeah.
I just, I can't help but say, I wish we got a little something on why this was happening.
Yeah, I agree.
Because we moved about in this script in a really smart way by, you know, graduating to where, like, he helps us eliminate the suspects.
That's fun.
And then get to where she doesn't give an F and she's, like, becoming a better.
person and with her dad like there's still even heart to this movie that's not just us trying
to find a murderer which is you know we always we love that if it has heart bingo um especially
when it's DPC related you and I connect to it like her being a young woman and yeah trying
to navigate this and having a little more anger than she would like and a little more resentment than
she would like yeah yeah all that works makes sense because we knew it right away we're like
her mom's dad we get it we get the pain and the anger of her being kind of bitchy um
and we assumed it was recent.
We find out it is only three years ago.
But, yeah, I was just trying to think while you were saying that what would be the reason,
we don't really, yeah, we don't have one.
And it's funny because when Lori says, well, then I guess I'm just going to have to do it again.
Like she just goes to kill her again.
Lori is not aware of the fact that she's killed her multiple times.
So that line wouldn't even have made sense.
Exactly.
Yeah.
So I'm, because I was like, maybe Lori knew, but she, she doesn't.
She just, right.
And I don't need it to be definitive.
I just kind of wish they sprinkled something.
Just a little something in there.
And even if we never got an answer, I wish that we were able to see our main character,
or see Tree, question it.
Why am I waking up all the time?
You know, like I understand.
She was so interested in figuring out how she was dying, which makes sense,
or who was trying to kill her, that she didn't stop to think, how am I still waking up?
Maybe it was her mom.
You know what it would be good if it was her mom.
Yeah.
Her mom's like a ghost.
It's like you can't go on this way, right?
And so throughout this, it's not like her mom would want her to die,
but if she's up there watching over her knowing that this girl's Lori's going to kill her.
She's resetting.
She's resetting it for her to be like, you're going to become the person I knew you were.
Right.
Tara, I think that's brilliant.
And even if that's not what actually is happening, I would love to see Tree think that's what happening.
Like by the end to be like, I kind of think this was my mom.
Absolutely.
Just any kind of line right there.
That's all we need.
Definitely.
And that feels like it would have been the perfect amount of like, oh, maybe there is something
out there.
Like, why me?
Why how?
But just I'll give it the past because the concept of trying to be the best version of
yourself is always going to be enjoyable to me.
I love that.
I love what movies teach us that you don't have to be the you can be.
Anybody out there, I say this all the time, but anybody out there who
questions like can people really change i i giggle at because if you're somebody who has changed
you know the answer to it yeah and as somebody who has changed significantly from that from being in
college to being now i'm a completely different person totally um and a lot of that has to do with
putting in the work maturing therapy distance between traumatic events like there's a lot of different
things that go into that but i i love watching characters on their journey because i know
When you're not the best version of yourself,
that doesn't mean that you could never get there.
So watching her become the better version of herself
through all of these events and those self-realizations,
I just think is so perfect.
Even watching her sign the environment treaty
and put the pillow down, just like, oh,
there's little things you can do to just make you a better you.
And I loved, loved seeing that, how you treat people,
how you stand up for people, when you show up,
where you show up, how you speak to your family,
how you speak to strangers, it all matters.
I love that.
So all of that, it absolutely surpasses me being a little bit annoyed
that they didn't give us any explanation.
Yeah.
So I still love this movie, but to go from being a really good movie to a great movie,
we wouldn't need that one.
The mom. Yeah, that one part.
Because I think you're right, they do a good job of bringing weight to the small things,
meaning you just waving back to someone who's waving and smiling at you
can change their entire day as well as yours.
Right, right.
And it was in that such a small moment that it wasn't even as maybe as big as the pillow
and the rest of it as we're going and telling the guy it's okay to be gay.
Like, you know, all that.
It's those, it's the way.
It does matter.
And I think in the grand scheme of things, that's what that movie,
that's what this movie is showing us.
And I think that's what gives it even more of the heart that even more of that the conversation that we had with the dad is a lot of heart.
But those small moments when she changes, you realize like, yeah, those things matter.
Yeah, completely.
I'm super duber with you.
I want to look some things up about this.
I'm curious about this cast because it is interesting that while there were some familiar looking faces, even hearing their names, I was like, I don't know these people.
And we know that there's a, or I think that there's.
There's a Happy Death Day, too.
Yes.
I wonder if it's same cast, different cast.
Right, me too.
I don't know.
But, okay, let's look into this.
Happy Death Day.
Oh, also interesting.
There's a Happy Death Day foreign film.
I wonder if it is similar themes or not.
So this Happy Death Day was in 2017.
It was directed by Christopher Landon, who let's see.
Also did, oh, my God.
What do you do?
You didn't watch this with me, but it was, you didn't watch Freaky with me.
I think John watched Freaky.
I didn't watch Freaky.
Was it good?
You guys should redo it on the channel
because I saw that you guys just redid
something that I did also.
The substance.
How good was that movie?
So good.
And I was like, oh, I'm so glad that now we're doing double-ups.
Yeah.
All right, I've been told we're in the thick of basketball season.
MLB is heating up and there's no shortage of games to track.

Freaky was amazing.
It actually don't want to tell you the problem.
Don't tell me anything, but it's Vince Vaughn.
You never know.
We might.
Vince Vaughn is the star of it and Catherine Newton.
And it's so good.
So he wrote Freaky.
So that makes perfect sense.
He also wrote paranormal activity, the marked ones.
Okay, I remember I watched that with Andrew.
But he directed, let's see, he directed Freaky,
he directed Happy Death Day, he directed Happy Death Day to you,
which is the second one and paranormal.
So, okay, so those are the ones he's directed.
Cool.
The writers of this is Scott Loeb-Lobdel.
Yeah.
Who, I don't think Critters Attack, I don't know.
Okay, so did a few things, but nothing that I know.
Yeah.
Jessica Ralph
Roth is the main blonde girl in this
She's a tree
She is also in La La Land
Oh, okay, cool
She was in Boy Kill's World
Which I saw as June 27
I don't remember that
She's in three episodes of Virgin River
I thought she was excellent
Cute show
I love that show
I thought she did a great job
Yeah, she does
Really great job
I would love to see more of her
Because I thought that she was so
She's believable in this
in this, especially in this character.
Yes, you're so good. Great job.
So good, especially the scene with our dad.
Israel Brozard, Brazard, he was in the bling ring, flipped.
Wow, okay, so it's so weird.
Like, I feel like after this, they would have taken off, but I don't know these people.
Yeah.
The one girl that ends up being the killer that I did recognize, Ruby Modine, and I asked if she was related to Matthew
Modine.
Oh, she was on Shameless.
That's how I know her.
Okay.
She was on shameless.
Okay.
So you want to get,
you want me to tell you some trivia about this?
Yeah, let's do it.
Let's see.
What can we,
what can we find?
What can we find?
Um,
all right.
According to director Christopher Landon,
Tree Gelbman's punchline,
who takes their first date to subway is,
it's not like you have a foot long,
it was improvised by Jessica.
Oh, nice job.
That is a good job.
That's funny.
The Bayfield University Baby Killer costume
was designed by Tony Gardner
who also designed the ghost face mask
the horror icon of the scream
films and which is a reworked
version of the father's death Halloween
costume. That's very cool. That's awesome.
The scene where
Tree walks through the campus quad
naked had to be done quickly given
that it was being filmed on
an active college campus
that presented the risk of students
witnessing the scene being filmed
and or taking photos.
Oh snap. The crew took extreme
precautions to clear away any potential onlookers. In the end, they managed to do just two to three
takes. Wow, that's funny. Good for her. That must have been like, we got to get this done.
That's wild, dude. The theatrical trailer utilizes the song Into Club by 50 cents as Trees' birthday
ringtone. However, the final film does not feature this as the crew and studio could not acquire
the rights. As a result, an original ringtone composition was concocted. I love that. Okay.
Oh, yeah, I kept wondering, like, what is that birthday?
Yeah, birthday song, yeah.
In the club would have been great.
Director Christopher Landon tested wearing the option of a baby mask for the killer in the office and scared a worker confirming his choice.
Yeah, great job.
When asked why a baby mask, Christopher Landon says he needed a combination of something that would pass for a mascot on a college campus.
It was both funny and scary at the same time.
Plus, he was expecting a son at the time, so he had baby on the brain.
I don't know if a baby would ever be a car.
college mascot have we ever seen that no that's why i said i was like that if that was the mascot i
wouldn't go to that college yeah it's so weird as hell but we let it go because movie time the original
title was half to death i don't like it this is so much better way better all right this one
has a lot of likes but it's a little longer it's a spoiler one let me get through it okay an original
ending featured tree succumbing to her accumulated injuries after she kills lori her
real killer. She's being treated for injuries by her professor's wife before being murdered again
by her as revenge for sleeping with her husband, thus entering another time loop. The test audiences reacted
furiously to this ending, feeling betrayed that the protagonist after becoming a better person
could not break free. Yeah. This ending was conceived as a way of leading the viewer to believe
it was never going to end. It was scrapped and reshot to the current theatrical ending as a result.
the sequel ignores the new ending because it opens with the scene where Ryan
Oh, don't read it, don't read it, don't read it, don't read it, get out, get out.
I didn't see it, so we don't know, good, good, good, we don't know, we just know Ryan is somewhere in there.
Yeah, and the new one. That's all right. I'm glad that they, that they change this ending.
That's a much better ending. I am not surprised that the audience has wanted her to win.
Ooh.
This is just a little something exciting for us to look forward to.
Okay.
An explanation for why tree got stuck in the time loop in the first place is never given.
But director Christopher Landon did include it in the sequel.
Ah, okay.
So I'm going to stop.
What if it's a mom and I was right?
I think that if you're not right, I think you should be.
Yeah.
It's a good.
It would have been great.
Add me to the room, Christopher.
You know, I'll say.
Yeah.
No, I think that that's really smart, Tara, because, yeah, I, like, I, like,
I punched a hole, but I wasn't exactly sure how to fill it.
And then you filled my hole.
Filled her hole.
That's in, not in more ways than one, just in that one, in that one instance.
Just that time.
And then here I am like, why are you guys right weird comments in that?
You filled my hole is what she said.
Okay.
The hole in my heart.
Yeah, I know it.
I know it.
This was fun.
It's a good time.
Can't wait for the next one.
Anything else, lady?
No, I love you guys.
Get your gear.
Yeah, for sure. Later rejects.
