Join Greg Alba and Tara Erickson as they journey into the magical world of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007). Directed by David Yates, the fifth installment follows Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe, Swiss Army Man, Now You See Me 2) as he returns to Hogwarts for his tumultuous fifth year, where darkness looms both inside and outside the castle walls. As the Ministry of Magic denies Voldemort’s return (Ralph Fiennes, Schindler's List, The Grand Budapest Hotel), Harry finds himself isolated and burdened by secrets. Determined to take control of his destiny, he rallies his fellow students to form Dumbledore’s Army—a courageous group led by the brilliant Hermione Granger (Emma Watson, Beauty and the Beast, The Perks of Being a Wallflower) and the loyal Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint, Knock at the Cabin, Snatch). Meanwhile, the ruthless Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton, Shakespeare in Love, Chicken Run) imposes strict and dangerous rules at Hogwarts, igniting further conflict. Other classic characters & performances include Alan Rickman as Severus Snape (Die Hard, Love Actually), Maggie Smith as Minerva McGonagall (Downton Abbey, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie), Gary Oldman as Sirius Black (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Dracula), & MORE! Starting point is 00:01:27 but then come to ours and say hi after because we want to the attention. We need to feel special and validated. We want to interact. We do it for us, not for you. No. Thank you to Hewel for sponsoring this video. More on them in just a bit. Tara, with that in mind. Yeah. Ready to swing in action? I'm ready. Let's do it to it. Starting point is 00:02:21 now case you catch the memo if you just hopped to the review or if you're listening to no snap or Spotify. We just watched Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I remembered moments before we film when I did watch it the one time whenever it came out decades ago. Okay. It's funny how this was the, I think this was the last one I attempted to watch in the theaters. I was with, I'm friends with one of the girls still. And there's like two, it was two girls and me when I was like a teenager. And they got into like a big debacle. god oh god and uh somehow i got caught in the middle of it and then the movie started and so i wasn't really paying attention oh word yeah so uh i i like none of this was familiar to me yeah crazy like
Starting point is 00:03:09 not like a not a single second of it was like you were caught up in teenage anxiety i remember jack about yeah there's teenage anxiety and women drama and i'm like good boy who doesn't know how to handle this you know um so yeah it's uh this is a film that uh we quite uh i enjoyed it didn't you enjoy it oh i loved it i loved it that was a good one huh yeah i remember so much fun fun you thought this was fun i thought this is dark as hell this is so dower but it's a lot of fun when you get i mean it's sad at the end but like i had a lot of fun with the like the firework thing and being back in the harry potterland even though this one is when it is sad but still like i love being here i thought this was the gloomiest one of them all it's
Starting point is 00:03:56 definitely sad what the saddest part is when he says good one james yes it made me like think like oh god it's just that's his friend and like back in the day and like that was his dad and like and then he dies right after it's just heartbreaking that was perfect delivery like he didn't even realize he said it No. He wasn't even like, whoops. It was so great. It was perfect delivery. Bittersweet.
Starting point is 00:04:22 Like, I, it was one of those things again. This is like a giant prequel experience for me because I was like, I know Sirius dies at some point. Yeah. I didn't know it was this movie. That felt so quick. Yeah, it was so fast. It was so quick. So sudden.
Starting point is 00:04:35 Yeah. Like they didn't even make like too much of a moment out of it because so much so much shit was going on at the same time. He was just fucking gone. I mean, freaking gone. Sorry. He just was gone. He was gone. dead and then uh like some anguish and then chasing after and then dumbled dumbledore and
Starting point is 00:04:53 baltimore fighting each other all of it's like holy shit so much is happening right now and then now i see some of the telegraphing in retrospect when serious was like don't worry harry we're going to be a great family once this is all said and done everything's going to be slam ditty issues when it's all we're going to have a great time we're going to hang out i'm never going to die harry so yeah i thought this was a this this is the one from david yates who took over the harry potter directing directing it before they were getting a different director every time and this is the one where it was like him and then they went you're going to direct all of them now oh it's the one same constant director i don't understand why the choice because this is i wouldn't call
Starting point is 00:05:36 this one my favorite one of the five we've seen so far um the the directing of the I did think was good. It had a distinct blend of realism meets fantasy. Like, it is a dark, like, feeling movie. Like, the overall gloom, there's a doom that, like, to cast this giant Paul over the entire experience. Like, right from the get-go, I think it's, like, appropriate to start your story with Dementor sucking the life out of Harry
Starting point is 00:06:08 and Dudley because that is how a lot of this movie feels. like it is just a sucking the life out of all of us it is that's what's happening it's like thematically in tune and umbrage being included in here very effective actress
Starting point is 00:06:23 whether she getting included is like sucking the life out of everyone here and then the darkness of Voldemort sucking the life and joy out and so I think as much that the Dementors are more important
Starting point is 00:06:35 in part three to start it off with them is a good like them for the drama like this feels very very heavy and dramatic and to take you know the teenage angst development of trauma mixed with puberty integrated and then have that be part of the way how Voldemort can prey on such a vulnerable child and use the darkness over some very real loss traumatic circumstances uh I thought was like allegorically great
Starting point is 00:07:12 metaphorically great there's a lot of strengths to it where would you rank this one in your personal opinion um they've all been amazing they've all been really good i mean the last one was the one where they're in the bus right away right all funky they're in the double deck or bus that's three why you remember that's three oh my god you see what i mean yeah three's three's the one with uh the time travel and then he thinks he sees his dad. Oh, right. And the last one. Four is the games.
Starting point is 00:07:45 That's right. I would maybe, maybe put this one before four, but only because we learn a lot. Number one, one cannot survive without the other one surviving. We didn't know that about Voldemort, I don't think, or I mean, we know my memory sucks. But that Harry Potter or Voldemort, one's got to be gone, and he finally recognizes that. Also, in seeing Dumbledore become like the Order of the Phoenix, he has Harry's back so hard that he freaking like shows up to save him and then storms out. Right?
Starting point is 00:08:24 We learned so much about Dumbledore and deep down that he cares about Harry Potter and he knows what's coming for him. Another part of it is that even the Weasley's, everyone, it's a family affair when they're caught in that room. they're all going he's a child how do we not make this happen right right we learn about that that it's literally all of them they have harry's back because they know what is coming for him we learn more about him in serious relationship we do see that that has grown they become closer um and then i also think we i mean well we we get to live with harry potter being a teenager and kissing the girl, which I really liked. And then it's real sad because they fed her drugs and then she had to confess. You know, you're like, give me a break. There's so much, which I do agree with you,
Starting point is 00:09:20 so much dark stuff in this one, except at the same time, we learn a lot and Harry learns a lot about himself. I mean, he realizes I'm going to have to kill Voldemort or I die. He is now becoming an adult and Dumbledore at the final, final end, now trust him with that information because he has to. They saw him, I mean, he's fighting Voldemort right in front of him. And like, now we really see why Dumbledore cares so much that he had to like ignore him and be that way. And then I also just think there's another little thing. We get a magnifying glass into the ministry, especially this crazy whack-a-do lady and that the ministry is so fearful of the dark lord that they literally will be like we're ignoring it and that makes that's what makes like the order and now of the phoenix seems so much greater because we're like it has to
Starting point is 00:10:23 freaking exist and where does it exist in freaking harry potterland even though the ministry is supposed to be part of this whole world and not be a against us although with the ministry we saw in the past with haggart and now in this one forget about it like now they might be on our side because they walked in and there's Voldemort okay like you you guys aren't listening but i really feel like this film gave us an insight to all of those things even though it was all like here we go down downward slope downward spiral not good yeah yeah i think they did a good job at further flushing out things that we were already privy to you know they include some new stuff like they include the paper dragon thing you know whatever the messenger they include the
Starting point is 00:11:16 um the the the giant but you know like you get a better giant you get a little bit more a sense of the centaur culture i'm sure i'm sure there's a lot left out from the books i mean they left out a lot in like prisoner in a goblet of fire so i can only imagine that there's there's so much even more left out of here but it didn't really get the the trim down sense like i felt like this is pretty cohesive and i thought the the use of the daily profit newspaper to um span time and catch you up on some little bits of information was a smart visual motif since the daily profit is a character in the movie as something that is causing a very harsh negative effect on the situation, on Harry Potter himself. So I think using that, I'm sure was not in
Starting point is 00:12:04 the book, but they managed to use it in a way for the movie adaptation, which was smart. And what they do with the ministry in particular and the Daily Prophet, I like the commentary of the more political angles. You know, like there's a sense of with the Voldemort and the death eaters and the pure blood, like there's a sense of Nazism, of course, when it comes to their what they want for the world and to purify it right and then you have i mean that's like the obvious goal like i know i ask in there of like what is voldemort to want all this power he wants to purify wizards come out yeah like i know i know people already commented like i don't pay attention but i'm like i'm literally saying it like five minutes later yeah yeah but then uh but then also
Starting point is 00:12:50 the way they have like the real world allegory because it's it's so fantastic right the wizarding world and then you take the media propaganda the lies the authoritarianism of how they're trying to control the way we think it's crushed down
Starting point is 00:13:09 progressiveness go back to old law and order and I like the way I plays with like the paranoia because the whole time I was here going seems to me like the ministry must be working with Voldemort and then come to find out like nah I'm just a bitch
Starting point is 00:13:25 And then the other, and then the guy's just a dumbass who's just fear and denial, you know? So, uh, yeah, I think like they handle so much really well in such like a dramatic, um, experience. And I think this is probably Daniel Radcliffe has been getting better every time. And I feel like he is every single time he shows up in a movie. It is the strongest he is. I agree. You know what I mean? Like he's, he's stronger and two, stronger and three, stronger.
Starting point is 00:13:52 So he's always at his best, I think. per movie, which is not an easy task. Dumbledore, right? How did you feel about Dumbledore this one? Oh, yeah. I mean, he had so many refining moments that you're like, this is who Dumbledore is.
Starting point is 00:14:11 Because before, you know, we were saying how we missed the old guy, because this guy's a little less like warm, his presence on screen, except now I feel like this is the first time that we have actually really spent some true time with Dumbledore and realize how much he actually cares about Harry and that every move that he has been making has been in the interest of him and his friends and that he is
Starting point is 00:14:38 he's like this one made it where I'm like he's a true leader he's a good one yeah he's willing to take the blame he's willing to take the sacrifice and yeah I like how you got to get like the action of him too and uh what did you feel about Gary Oldman I mean, he's always great, though. I know. It's like it's possible to be bad with him. I just, I'm like, yeah, I don't think about it because he's great. I will, though, bring up, just go back to Harry.
Starting point is 00:15:08 I think his strongest moment here in his acting was when he's on the ground and Dumbledore's there. And he's fighting against Voldemore in his brain. And he's sort of like writhing on the ground. Very realistic, hard work. And he put himself there. And I was, like, thinking in my brain, I was like, this is Daniel's, like, strongest scene in this that I've seen him in. It's so realistic.
Starting point is 00:15:32 I agree. That is my favorite acting scene from him, too. Reject Nation, I currently am on a very specific macro plan. Calories, fat, carbs, protein, you know the goods. And what's very fortunate for me, some of the brands that we have partnered with recently are products that I've already been using. So throughout this journey, I want to keep you guys updated on my health and fitness goals. 25th, that was 218 pounds. At the time of filming this one, just under 198. A little lighter than the last time I mentioned today's sponsor, Hewle, baby, that's right. I already had, already tore it open because I just had a one earlier today. This is my own order. This is that I paid with my own money because I love the product. It's been one of my go-to drinks on this journey. And Hewle's black condition rated drink is a complete meal in a bottle. It's packed with 35 grand.
Starting point is 00:16:24 of protein 27 essential vitamins and minerals so you're not just filling up you're fueling up as we like to say here's why I keep coming back to it it's freaking efficient it's ready just grab it drink it dunzo it actually tastes great that's so important a lot of protein shakes look good but taste bad this one smooth delicious and no chalky aftertaste got low sugar high protein good macros fits into my plan without ruining any of my progress the other thing too is I got more flavors than have chocolate vanilla ice coffee, strawberry banana, which is what my wife Olivia loves to drink.
Starting point is 00:16:57 Or if you can't decide, you just grab a variety box. That's an option too. It's affordable. Each bottle is under five bucks. Make it an easy choice for anyone looking for a quick, nutritious meal.
Starting point is 00:17:06 If you want to give it a go like myself, here's the deal. You go to Huell.com, use my code rejects and get 15% off your first order plus a free gift. That's Huel.com code rejects. Fuel your body right,
Starting point is 00:17:17 even on the go. Hopefully you love it just as much as I do. I like when he is teaching the kids as well because there's four movies here prior right and I think we even had a comment of we don't really ever going to see him like do
Starting point is 00:17:32 much wizarding stuff we don't really go see him like do real wizard and stuff and then when he's even being given the speech like he did this he did this and he's reflecting back going like yeah but a lot of that was luck and stuff and then when he's doing the teaching like oh he's actually been way more skilled
Starting point is 00:17:48 than even we picked up on and then I'm sure a lot of people didn't have been a Harry didn't pick up on like, oh, he's actually phenomenally more skilled than he's let on. Yep. And like how much he has acquired per chapter in this saga that he's been on. So
Starting point is 00:18:04 I think that's some really good stuff. And I love the relationship forming with Snape. You know, this was like, I feel like Snape's kind of been taking a bit of a back seat in the last couple movies. Yeah. Because that's the thing. You have such a giant cast and I'm sure like you got like mad eye moody to do with a weird eye, right?
Starting point is 00:18:20 And he was such a prominent character in the last one yeah and he's like a cameo in this one totally barely in it totally so it's snake he's kind of a cameo too he's more of an extended cameo i'd say it's got like scenes he's got the whole thing we're training him maggie rose has one line right i think and she's brilliant and emma thompson has one line like yeah emma thompson has a couple of lines but i think they're smart with the prophesizing of of like give me a prophecy a dark future ahead of you and then it does come true for umbrage when it seems like he's just making shit up and Trulani had like three scenes right she had that scene that she had the scene which is getting fired and then she has uh the she is the prophecy in the in the jar too right right right so she's got more of a present and she had a great that was such a good heartbreaking scene when she's like i've been here 16 years she starts crying emma thompson is great at being emotional and making it very believable yeah i would say here's all back it would immediately first yeah i think the last like 30 minutes of this is some of the best of the
Starting point is 00:19:22 Harry Potter franchise. Yeah. Like when they, when Sirius is kidnapped. Yeah. Okay, no, right from when the Weasley brothers like,
Starting point is 00:19:30 like make a big scene with the fireworks. That's so great. That's when it, yeah. And then, yeah, then this momentum picks up of darkness and Sirius is kidnapped.
Starting point is 00:19:38 They're going in there and just this like insane level of revelation and domino effect and Bellatrix with strange showing up. And just a constant barrage of like emotion and action and visual of, with like elemental battle with Voldemort and Dumbledore like the finale and of course like Harry's big moment when he's when he's coming into his own agency and taking control of his own pain yeah so strong like the last half hour yeah and I think this is another amazing movie in the Harry Potter saga I would personally probably still put this at number there's five of them yeah this would be five I would probably right no I put it above one I would I would definitely put it above one um i would probably put it still at four solely due to um it is just so like it is so it sounds weird to say because i love a good drama it is so drama it is so dower it is so gloomy i know and um i love like the wonder and fun i know and see that's why the firecrackers yeah yeah yeah and it could just be like the mood that i was like in today honestly you
Starting point is 00:20:51 you know i think that you're very right i got like distracted with the because they leave you on that good kind of fun note a little bit like we go back and then i'm remembering fireworks but everything else in between is dire yeah it's like i am they've been getting darker every movie so i can imagine it'll just get even more down it'll just get even more dark so the last thing i want is for anything to be misinterpreted like i am so looking forward to the next one absolutely and i loved this movie me too um i i just feel like because it's a bit of a debby downer because within the first like hour and a half there's also not like a ton of like the wonder magic side of it there's not it's to mix it in it's dark it's worry it's like harry's gonna get killed the dark lord is back
Starting point is 00:21:42 no one's listening to us everyone's meaning and then that freaking teacher tortures everyone for an hour yeah yeah so and i hate her but like the last half hour is super dark too it is super intense and super sad and i loved it yeah and i think it's some of the best yeah yeah i love it's some of the best but it's also like a bit of a mix of the fantastical and stuff in there too yeah um while being incredibly heavy so yeah i feel like i'm trying to like really explain something just because the last thing i want is for anyone to take away that i don't love this movie or that i don't just we do we're just saying the fantastical nature incredible movies you have to rank somewhere and yeah i think it i think that's just where i put it while
Starting point is 00:22:23 acknowledging there are strengths about this one that outst strengthen the qualities of the other ones yeah and honestly in what you're saying is what everyone else would notice because if you look at it the other movies we're in we're in uh the uh the sorting hat and here we go and we're playing quidditch and the buffets are always filled and we're having fun at the table and then we're like playing games it's a very we almost cut to where i think the director had to make it this that a dark cloud has come over the wizarding world of harry potter because this cun t shows up changes everything and then obviously the dark lord has been let out which we realized in the last one and that is why it is
Starting point is 00:23:15 like the storm from the very beginning is there. And we know it's coming for us throughout the whole thing. They're the only, which I think it's kind of smart in being a Debbie Downer mode. And I don't think they really probably had anywhere else to go unless, exactly, unless the book probably had more uplifting moments and we couldn't get to those. But from the audience perspective, when the twins go in and they light the fireworks, you also are like, Yay, thank goodness, we're back in an old school Harry Potter movie where there's like joy and wonder and magic. But then we go back to the realistic nature of what it is
Starting point is 00:23:55 to have the Dark Lord and this lady and them fighting against these things and that they are going to war. And this movie did a good job of that. Like they have to hide being training in combat and stuff. There's a lot of secrecy in this that doesn't allow a lot of space for it to be the fun. Happy Harry Potterland that we've seen before. Yeah, like we watch a lot of horror movies that are way darker than Harry Potter.
Starting point is 00:24:23 Oh, yeah. Give me a break. But they can be a ton of fun. Absolutely. In spite of how dark or dreadful or moody and atmospheric it is, it can be a ton of people and you're like, let's go. It could be a ton of fun. Yeah, like that's a slaughter one, but I'm trying to think of like.
Starting point is 00:24:39 I know. I was trying to go really. Like, I think smile is like a very dark one, but I'm like, this far, no. It's very dark. but but like this one i'm like i wasn't really having fun in the first hour i was like this is just super sad yeah which it needed to be though that's the thing so i guess i'm just coming from like that fun enjoyment side because it i'm like i don't see another version where you could have done something else exactly it needed to be that's what i was kind of saying of like if they had more time
Starting point is 00:25:06 i bet the book had the more uplifting moments in there um but the way that they they gave it to us here I'm like, yeah, it all makes sense. And I can't wait to see where the story goes now. With her being out, Dumbledore being back in, are we going to now open up with, oh, it's back to the way it was except lingering over us always is going to be Harry Potter versus Voldemore and who's going to have to die. Yeah, but that being said, even though I'm saying that I'm like, I still love the first hour. you know yeah like i don't want that to be miscommunicated either i still love the first hour it gets so you know like you know comments are like he's just to say one thing and they totally
Starting point is 00:25:50 take out of the media literacy yeah i mean you guys have to realize we're obviously obsessed with these movies but we're here to review it and talk about like our honest true feelings but it really is that we love these movies and we're sometimes when we're giving a review we're figuring it out as we're speaking about how we actually feel about a film and it's not like uh we're just I we already have it all in here and we're it's like no we're we're talking through just like you guys would when the second you get out of movie movie data right and you hear everybody around you's like what you oh god I was it was that's what it is yeah but I still love the man I still give it like 8.5 out of 10 or something yeah I'm with you nine somewhere there yeah it doesn't
Starting point is 00:26:33 matter still pretty high for me still pretty high pretty pretty high um ladies and gentlemen please go ahead, leave your thoughts down below. Go ahead. On Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Yeah. We will be at WonderCon, March 29th. I don't know what room. I'm not even sure what time,
Starting point is 00:26:52 but it's sometime of the late afternoon and early evening. Get your pass for that day. Do it now. Hang out and then you come and see us. In the meantime, we'll see you soon for whatever part six is called. We'll see you guys. Eric Horstman. Yes.
Starting point is 00:27:11 Wow, if there was a guy who would be great in the wizarding world, someone who you'd want in your class of mystical dark arts, you know it's going to be Eric Horstman. Eric Horstman is like the version of Gilderoy Lockhart, but who's actually cool and who would actually want to learn from him. I know, he's like a Slytherin version of Gilderoy. He is? Oh my God, he is, though. He is the very much. It's a really good call. You know he would side with Slythern until they C.C's with.
Starting point is 00:27:41 they do to Dhabi. Yeah. Then he would be like, not okay. Free the elves. Not when he sees what they do to hippogriss. He's like, not okay.
Starting point is 00:27:51 Let them fly free. Don't execute them. He believes in animal equality. Yeah. He's a vegan. He'd be a vegan at Hogwarts and he can make his own. He wouldn't even eat the chocolate frogs.
Starting point is 00:28:02 And then we'd all be like, they're not real frogs. They're just enchanted. Veganism is ruining the fun. Hogwarts for everyone. The fun, Hogwarts. Hogwarts is fun every year since Harry Potter got here. It is nothing.
Starting point is 00:28:18 It's not a dangerous place to be. It has been flowing and it has been goal-oriented. It's turning out the next generation. It's been a solid system. Nothing has been going awry since Harry showed up. But Eric, you are making things difficult because everyone just wants to enjoy their food in the hall. These could be peaceful stories, if not. for you, Eric.
Starting point is 00:28:42 I feel like Eric is just kind of a sourpuss sometimes. You know, you can be a real dementor sometimes. He's sucking the life out of the party every time. That's a spectro-patronum on you. Solid dementor impression. I remember that they really, like a straw. That's right. They do.
Starting point is 00:29:00 They drink your milkshake. I drink your milkshake. Like Daniel Day Lewis and the Daniel Day Lewis. Daniel Day Day. Anyway, Eric. All kidding. you would make a terrible wizard in Slytherin.
Starting point is 00:29:16 Yeah. I see you more as a Hufflepuff. Why? Well, the movies don't really focus on anything but, you know, Gryffindor and Slythering, so I can't really tell you too much about the other house. And Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff were there too. They were smart and they were friendly. So you're over in between.
Starting point is 00:29:33 This is what I'm assuming. What they are. Yeah, Ravenpuff. Somewhere there. Huffleclaw. You know, you're good to have. hang out with in the stories that don't get ridden about.
