Starting point is 00:01:30 This video is brought to you by a product I use weekly, Harry's. Andrew, tell the people how you are. I am doing quite well. I'm gonna do my John Blackthorn impersonation because you were just doing an impression accent, so my turn. I'm doing quite well. Thank you so much for asking Tara. How are you doing? I'm doing quite well as well.
Starting point is 00:01:48 I think our accents are like a five out of ten. We could walk on them, but do we have to? Nah. I think that's it. You wanna just get into the hell, hell boy. Let's do it. I'm so excited. Okay. Damn, Kiermo did the screenplay? Well done, sir.
Starting point is 00:02:08 Andy did the screen story. Well done. By the way, if you guys are listening to us on Twitter, we on iTunes and Apple. Apple or Spotify and Apple, thank you so much. Please leave us a rating. We would so appreciate it. And also, too, for those of you on YouTube, please let Craig and John know you want us to do the sequel. because we want to watch it so bad.
Starting point is 00:02:31 Yeah, I like the crap out of this. Common It's Sherry. Please. I really, it's Marco Beltrami. Yes, I called it. Because he did Blade 2 and I loved his music and Blade 2. Have you seen Blade 2? I have not.
Starting point is 00:02:44 There's a key music in there, which I won't spoil for you. That's amazing. But anyways, getting back to this, I love this movie so much. Great World Building. I didn't know anything about the character other than what he looked like. so it's just very fascinated with just everything about him I think the thing that I like the most I kind of alluded to it in the reaction
Starting point is 00:03:06 is amongst all his powers and how strong he is and everything I just like how they humanize the character and that's the most relatable part and they did such a great job with that he can get jealous but then also too he can get very empathetic and I love the arc he had
Starting point is 00:03:25 the way he matured as a character because he was very immature at the beginning. Yeah, I mean, he desired, oh, Rick Baker, awesome. Yeah, he desired, you know, some of Blair's character, or Liz, and, you know, having her back. And then also when he saw her with another man, which, again, I think we can relate to, like, totally understandable, his reaction
Starting point is 00:03:46 and how he was behaving, which possibly, you can't blame him because you don't know that someone was infiltrating in the fort, or wherever their home-based, location was not saying it's his fault that that's why he's like oh oh i'm still here hello maybe he will be in the sequel that's great that's so funny um again i am not please don't take it as i am blaming him his father was going to pass away um no matter what uh so i don't want you guys to take it as i am blaming Hellboy for his father? Of course not. But obviously, you know, that immature decision
Starting point is 00:04:29 was like a domino effect that kind of led to that. But I'm not blaming him. But again, I do love the character arc that we go through. Again, just all the rules and everything. And again, just the world building. And also, too, I think Yermo del Toro just nailed the atmosphere, the tone, balancing out horror and the fantasy element of this film. It just, and the, the cinematography. There was just so many different elements of this film. I really appreciated. I got a lot more to say I want to hear what Tara's got to say about this
Starting point is 00:05:02 film, though. I mean, I loved it. From the top, like, when you set up shots that are so cinematic and so beautiful, I think that's why we were so engaged in the beginning of just when you're looking at a beautiful shot that Del Toro, it does such an amazing job of, as well as mixing
Starting point is 00:05:18 it in with practical effects. That is what, like, I am on board all the way. is rare that you see more stuff that has practical stuff in it, which I really enjoy, especially the guy on, Yvonne, the skeleton guy. I mean, that was like a practical thing. And the buildings that were blown up, I was like, that was real. That adds to the realistic, like, nature of, like, just for the audience when you're watching it, you're like, that's real. That, like, really brings us in it. And there wasn't, like, I could imagine if there was more shots in this, of course, like,
Starting point is 00:05:54 what you were saying, there's some stuff that has to be CGI, but there's a lot of stuff that they were like, if we can make it practical, we'll do it. And I really appreciated that because that really brought me further into this. And I also agree that all the actors really just
Starting point is 00:06:10 natural, grounded. I never was brought out of it because I didn't believe an actor, which obviously I always super appreciate. And I thought like Ron Perlman did just, I mean, he was such a great job, such a grounding, like, large character, but at the same time, he's very realistic, which is why we, when we, when we hear
Starting point is 00:06:30 him talk, or even when he's, he's doing like a joke or being comedic, but he's also being jealous when he sees Selma Blair off with Myers, um, it all works. It's not like, oh, out of nowhere, it all works within the world of hellboy. And I just thought he did a really good job balancing both of being like that hellboy, but also being really good. realistic and like you said bringing in that human nature element that we really needed to see I think to really enjoy this and like really be on his side especially like going through when his dad dies and and getting with Selma and then also building up that camaraderie at the end with Myers we see that side of hellboy going down human side coming up of like hey we can relate
Starting point is 00:07:19 to hellboy a little bit more each each moment that we see with him. Yeah, and anyone who saves a box of kittens, you know, you're in my heart always. Absolutely. I also, too, I know I was making some jokes during the reaction like, oh, this is reminding me visually or of some Marvel films. Obviously, I know this came out before a lot of those Marvel films I was referencing, which if you didn't make it to this portion of the review, I'm probably going to hear about it in the comments, which is fine. You have every right to say that. But I will say, watching this film, which again, I adored and loved, you can tell you. tell that, and I know that there are stories in the comics that a lot of the MCU writers,
Starting point is 00:07:57 which again, I love most of those films. They took a lot of those stories, but you can tell, too, there's some inspiration and stuff from this film that the MCU writers used in Captain America and the Avengers with the portal coming in, Loki with the Leviathan that Josh Wheaton used, etc. Red Skull, Captain America, stuff like that. And again, I know a lot of that stuff's already in the comics, but I'm just saying there's some visual reminders from this film that clearly the MCU writers but I think that that's why I think this is a big film that those writers are like
Starting point is 00:08:26 hey this is a great film we're going to use some not copy but use some inspiration for our film here I do like the book of facts yeah right I do like the contrast between Liz and Hellboy just for the fact that Hellboy wants to be
Starting point is 00:08:43 like he hates that he has to be isolated wants to be out there and also he wants to have a relationship with Liz and be able to go anywhere he wants we're on the opposite end of the spectrum. Liz, she wants to isolate herself because she can't control her power. And you know, she's been bullied and like that's
Starting point is 00:08:58 where she loses control of her power. So I just find that to be such a fascinating relationship. Again, very, you know, the contrast between the two is very fascinating. I just it's a very hard thing to do as writing, as
Starting point is 00:09:14 Guillermo del Toro and the other writer of this film. I think within the first five, ten minutes, again, very hard thing to do. but I got so right away invested like understanding these characters where they're coming from, their motivations and just why they feel the way that they feel
Starting point is 00:09:30 and also why they are apart from each other as well and also like just I understood that within the first five to 15 minutes it's not an easy thing to do you can write it on the pages but like feeling that and getting it on the screen is just it's a hard job and I think Yermo del Toro at least from my perspective
Starting point is 00:09:48 he nailed that and because of everything I just described, I was immediately infused and so invested to the point that while I think it was a little immature, what the hell boy was doing, I understood and I might have in the same position, I might have been
Starting point is 00:10:04 jumping rooftops and spying on, so I would have been like, what is going on it? Yeah, I probably would have been doing that and probably would have thrown the rocket. When you really like somebody you know, you're like, I'm going to stalk them, like what is going on? What are they talking about? And I think it's so
Starting point is 00:10:20 funny when he's like she's laughing she's laughing that's always the killer like in the heart you guys I've been being a tragic person just real quick watching reality television and the biggest thing when they go on like dates and love is blind they're like oh I can hear my ex laughing and it's like it is
Starting point is 00:10:36 a knife in the heart and I love that line so much I got to say too I think this film we talked about the fantasy element we talked about the horror and a lot of other things I think this film really nailed the humor too I mean just again it was a great balance act. I would say again for me, one slight negative, which is nobody's fault, it's 2004.
Starting point is 00:10:56 I think some of the CGI was a, it's just a little dated at this point. There were a couple CGI shots with like some of the cockroaches and then Hellboy fighting at the end, that big monster. Again, just a little slight negative for me. But overall, I think you made a great point. I like that they infused more practical and animatronic stuff and tried to stay away as much as possible from CGI. You know, usually the two best examples I always go to are Terminator 2 Judgment Day in Jurassic Park where, you know, you try and blend
Starting point is 00:11:24 practical with CGI, and I think this film, as much as possible, did that. And then again, there were some great visual effects, like the portal and the stuff's coming out of the portal, and even that predator-looking monster of visual, like that CGI did not bother me at all. So most of the CGI, just I don't want it
Starting point is 00:11:40 to be, you know, taken, like, Andrew hated the CGI in this film. Just some of the, just a couple shots of the CGI were a little bit dated for me. So if I would find a slight negative, it would be just, you know, again, the cockroaches and that big monster that was in Rasputin throughout the film. It was just, again, a little dated,
Starting point is 00:11:58 kind of like Spider-Man 3 when you see, like, Toby without the mask, and you can see it's clearly CGI in some shots. It's like some of that looks like it's a PS3 game. Right. But it just takes you out of the illusion a little bit. Sure. But still, I just thought they did such a great job. Rick Baker, I love.
Starting point is 00:12:15 the look of hellboy from this. It's just, again, I didn't read any of the comic books, but I've seen images of it, and I think he just really nailed it down with that practical look. I'm so glad, I don't know how much money it would cost. I can imagine a fortune if they would have went the CGI look, like a Hulk
Starting point is 00:12:31 or something like that. I'm glad they went with the practical look, and I love it. Ron Perlman looks damn well right out of the comics. And also, too, I loved Abe Sapien. I loved the look they went with that character too. That was awesome. And also, too, Nazi Darth Vader that was scary with his eyes that reveal I mean so many different
Starting point is 00:12:51 iconic practical look I mean Rick Baker he's he's just oh it's so good especially when they they have him down to just the body on the table and we're seeing like Darth Vader knife Nazi guy and it's just his eyes and the body and then he raises up it was such a great way to look at like all the surgeries and just underneath it all and then I finally understood like what kind of his heart is like what was that and I like that we didn't we didn't need to say anything there wasn't any exposition to reveal that it was just like oh I get it now I really like that reveal and I think there's a lot of parts in this script that were written really smartly especially when you're trying to add in
Starting point is 00:13:31 comedy that can be done like really corny like meaning the tone and the pacing has to be just right when you're mixing it in with sci-fi and action and there's like a comedic line some movies they don't know how to get that tone right and this one Totally. I was like, ha, this absolutely works. And I wasn't just, like, laughing to be like, give it a laugh. That's an obvious line. It's like, no, the comedy in this actually worked. And I think that specifically worked because of the human nature of Hellboy and what a good, like, actor Ron Perlman is. And I think that everyone else in the cast is sort of feeding off of that. I also think that the relationship between him and Selma, the way that it's set up in the beginning, that could come off as
Starting point is 00:14:12 really corny and like you were saying it from the beginning we really felt it of like oh he he likes her he loves her he misses her he's probably going to go visit her but it wasn't set up like other movies could do where it's like oh that's kind of a corny thing and then he goes to find this girl it felt really real i really liked it it felt grounded and the reasoning was there and i really appreciated that without a lot of exposition it was just with the way um I think Ron was, as an actor, the way that he was, you know, saying lines and the way that it was presenting itself with having Selma in the cameras in his room. And then obviously when he meets her, Selma Blair is a phenomenal actress as well.
Starting point is 00:14:58 That I just think everything was grounded and realistic and really believable. And that, to me, is like, always 10 out of 10. I hate it when it's not real. Absolutely. Thrill to be partnering with a brand I've been using for nearly two years now. then that's harry's razors i'm generally more drawn to anything that goes against the norm and harries does just that in the grooming world they saw the high prices in the industry and decided to blaze their own trail with quality and affordability i keep a beer but whenever you see these cheeks in the neck
Starting point is 00:15:25 clean and that's the work of harry's right there keeps my wife happy and harries makes it effortless their precision blades that cut smoothly with less drag making every shave satisfying and yes it's versatile for other areas too you know what i mean so as a harry's devotee i can vouch for their value you can experience unparalleled comfort and quality in your grooming routine where exceptional craftsmanship meets affordability making a smart choice for a top-not shave without breaking the bank their kits and value packs for shaving are unbeatable but harries is not just about shaving again they offer quality thoughtfully designed grooming products including shampoo conditioner and amazing body wash without the premium price quality affordability that's a thesis of this now these i actually pulled right from my own bathroom i regularly use their five blade razor with a nice weighted handle and their foaming shaving gel, man, this deb, that ball, it is a game changer. I just like the feel of it. Now I have to commit to keeping this in my hand the whole time, because I'm not going to go to the bathroom in the middle of shooting this. The handles, they feel perfectly balanced. And the razor's
Starting point is 00:16:23 sleek design is a classy addition to my bathroom. And the quality of the shave, unparalleled. Gotta reiterate, keep part of my weekly grooming ritual, because their entire range of products fits seamlessly into my routine. Stephanie no reshoot's here. Their German engineer blades are durable, and refill plans are economical. Starting point is 00:17:03 embrace the extraordinary with harries till next time reject nation till next time and like the the one thing I'll say when you're like, I love the ape, the fish. I'm like, absolutely. It's so exciting to me that that, it was so reminds you, shape of water. Shape of water. I keep calling a fish guy. That I'm like, oh, that's like his shape of water guide. It's not exact.
Starting point is 00:17:24 Obviously, I know that. But that's, that would have been great for me to have seen Hellboy and then see shape of water and go like, oh, yeah, I remember his, like, his fish guy. And he kind of like, maybe he took that character a little bit. He changed it, obviously, a lot. The shape of water is very. very different than Abe. I understand that. I'm just saying that's a fun thing to see.
Starting point is 00:17:42 I've never seen Shape of Water, but it's fantastic film. Hopefully I'll get to react to it for you guys. But whenever I do watch it, now I will have a reference that it's Abe Sapien or a version, a variant of Abe Sapien, rather. No, I think you make a great point, though. I like that there was a lot of visual storytelling
Starting point is 00:17:58 that was really not hand-fed, not rather spoon-fed to the audience. You know, Guillermo del Toro and the other writer on this film, trusted the audience. Hey, we know you're smart. We're not going to just again, spoon feed you. We're going to trust you. And I like that, you know, to your point, I like that things weren't revealed right away. Like they didn't reveal right away. Why is Selma Player in this incident? Because I was even thinking that too right away. I'm like,
Starting point is 00:18:22 why is she in this institution? And I like how things were just slowly peeled away, the layers of everything. And, you know, and that really, again, it just got me more invested and got me like, wait, what's going on here? So, I mean, I just like how this film really took its time while staying at a good, steady pace. Yeah. I mean, there were just so many things that were, again, that's why filmmaking, writing, it's just, it's so difficult.
Starting point is 00:18:45 There's so many things. You could do 99 things perfect. Yeah. And then one thing just wrong. And it throws the whole thing off. Yeah, exactly. So, I mean, there's just so many things that were done so well. I also, too, I loved. I mean, I know we didn't get a ton of time between
Starting point is 00:19:01 it, but I really appreciated the relationship between Hellboy and his father, just starting from the baby roots and the trust and again i i understand the idea of wanting to isolate again it had that superman feel where jonathan kent is so protect he's got an alien for his son and he doesn't want anyone possibly taking him away experimenting on him whatever before he's got full control of his powers and is ready for people to like embrace what his son is and all that totally understandable but again i i love that angle when you know you have like a superpower being for a son it's i think that's a totally
Starting point is 00:19:37 you know and it's a father's love you're going to be protective over your son whether it's blood or a surrogate son or adopt whatever the cases and again I think that to your point that just it grounded the film like you know when you got this fantasy horror type of film it still was grounded down in reality and that was the thing I loved and appreciated yeah you can give me all this action spectacle and all these comic book stuff which I'm gonna love you know yeah but it's it's the it's the characters and the storyline where I was that's where I was I fell in love with that's where I was I fell in love with this movie the most. I agree. And especially with the Selma part, there's a lot of movies that in the beginning, because they took kind of a slow burn in revealing, like, why is she in this mental institution? There's a lot of movies that I can assume in the beginning at the top of like showing her on the screen and going, well, we know she's in the mental institution because you can't control her powers with the fire thing. And you're like, we don't need, no, just show it to us. And I really appreciate that Gammer del Toro. I was like, no, we just, all we have to do is just show them. Just put trust in them. And I fully, I really, really,
Starting point is 00:20:37 enjoy that. You're 100% right. And that's great because they could have overloaded us with exposition. You guys know, I hate that. I've only seen three Guillermo del Toro films now. Mimic and Blade 2, which I love. I haven't seen either. Which I love.
Starting point is 00:20:54 I think he also did Coco, didn't he? The Pixar film? Yeah, didn't Guillermo del Toro do an animated thing? He might have, but I don't believe he did Coco. You'll let us know, but I don't believe he did Coco. Anyways, point being is, so far, I love all his films. I need to watch more. I know. Please let us know in the comments. All the Guillermo de Toro films I need to watch, probably all of them, right?
Starting point is 00:21:16 Point I'm trying to make, I'm not trying to go off topic on this, but every time I watch one of his films, well, I guess the third time now, it makes me more sad that we never got his version of The Hobbit. While I love Peter Jackson, Lord of the Rings is my all-time favorite trilogy. God, what a missed opportunity. We could have got the Guillermo D'Otoe. Anyways, I love, love, love this movie. We will get to the movie trivia. Before we do that, the cinematography, the horror elements, the fantasy, Ron Perlman's performance. I loved his character arc, just how he matured. Selma Blair created the contrast and the relationship.
Starting point is 00:21:51 I was so invested in those two. John Hurt, he was great as well. I loved all the cinematic shots that they had, the practical and the animatronics. There was just so many, the world building in general, just getting infused into this world that I knew nothing about coming in. because I never read the Hellboy comics. I loved so much about this. It was just a really fun, scary, awesome, cool time. Yeah, I agree.
Starting point is 00:22:16 Deltore does a really good job with monsters and bringing you into that world and making it really believable, bringing like the audience in to relate to these things that do not look like us, don't sound like us, but there's like a tying chord that you feel like, you're like, I can understand this point of view with this character.
Starting point is 00:22:34 He does a really nice job of that always. and specifically a really nice job of just bringing us monsters and things that look really rad and I love that about him. He has like such a style that is really nice to see from a director like when you watch a thing you're like that's a del Toro thing which is
Starting point is 00:22:54 awesome which I really like. You got some trivia for us? Yes, let's see let's get to the trivia here okay so Doug Jones I know who Doug Jones is by the Doug Jones, remember Hocus Pocus? Yes. He's Billy, the zombie guy that...
Starting point is 00:23:11 Oh, oh, yeah. Yeah, that's Bill. That's Abe Sapien. Oh, okay. So Doug Jones, who plays Abe Sapien's voice, was dubbed by David Hyde Pierce, but Pierce refused to credit because he felt that Abe was entirely Doug's creation and did not wish to detract from his performance. I love him because I knew that was his voice because I've been watching him in Julia,
Starting point is 00:23:32 the HBO show. He plays... He's so good in that show. He's phenomenal. And I was like, oh, my God, that's him. That's great. Bravo, David. That's some good humility right there.
Starting point is 00:23:43 I like that, too. When writer and director, Guillermo del Toro met with producers, many changes to the Hellboy character were suggested. One idea was to have Hellboy be a human who transforms into Hellboy when he gets angry. Another suggestion was that he came from hell but was a normal human. Del Toro vetoed all such attempts to alter the character. Good job, Del Toro. We don't know obviously much about the character, but I'm glad what they did here. Get out of here, executives, with all your money.
Starting point is 00:24:14 I'm not going to take any your ideas. I'm glad Guillermo was the writer and had final say on everything. That's the only way to make it. That's why you got to get a clout before you do a studio film. Otherwise, they're going to take advantage of it. Or just make it a terrible movie. Exactly. In 2012, Ron Per-well, do like three more.
Starting point is 00:24:32 In 2012, Ron Per- Perlman once again endured the four-hour makeup routine required to transform him into Hellboy, not for a sequel or other acting job, but to fulfill the make-a-wish request of a six-year-old boy named Zachary who had leukemia. Creature effects, how special motion applied Perlman's Hell makeup, Hellboy makeup, and later made up Zachary as Hellboy as well. And then Zachary got to spend the day hanging out with Hellboy. Oh, my God. That's the sweetest thing I ever heard.
Starting point is 00:25:00 He's more like Heart Boy, right? from Ron Perlman. That is so sweet. I can't stand it. Yeah, that's awesome. That's so cool. Wow. Okay, two more guys. It took anywhere from five to seven hours to apply Doug Jones's makeup as Abe Sapien.
Starting point is 00:25:18 It took another three hours to reverse the process. Sometimes some of the pieces were not removed so that would be easier to put the costume on the next day. He had to sleep in those. Yeah. Oh my God, that's amazing. But the question is, did he sleep in water or on his bag? That's what I want to know to. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:25:35 You guys, I cannot believe that that actor did that because that, I had to one time there was a wig that they had to like put on to my head for a commercial. And they were like, oh, if you can come back tomorrow because it was a two-day shoot, it was so itchy. And that he had a whole thing on that I'm like, what did they leave on him? I would be so upset. Yeah. Okay. Final one. Guillermo del Turo
Starting point is 00:26:00 got hooked on the Hellboy comics during the shoot of Mimic and stated that these comics were the only positive experience on that movie. For years he considered a Hellboy adaptation to be a dream project and had always wanted to cast Ron Perlman
Starting point is 00:26:16 in the lead but could never secure a budget nor studio approval after the massive success of Blade 2. Starting point is 00:27:05 Yeah, which you guys know I love. I'm also very curious where he's like, that was the only nice part about he's making a film mimic. And he's like, the only good part about making that film was me reading the comic books of Hellboy. I'm like, oh, dang, what happened on that set? That's some gossip juice right there that I want to know. It's a good film, but just warning it's bloody violent.
Starting point is 00:27:26 Oh, interesting. I might have to watch it too. can leave a comment to let him know if like if I should be watching that I'm also very intrigued as to like what the F went down there between him and actors and the production and like
Starting point is 00:27:40 making a movie is hard and I'm very curious if there was a lot of tension there and he was like hellboy is my escape so that is the most intriguing thing to me I always love the behind the scenes on movies because they are the hardest they're one of the hardest things to make
