Who's your favorite character in the show?
Starting point is 00:03:51 Olivia Rodrigo. Nini. Okay. He's not going to say. He's going to keep it in. He wants to see what you. I'm going to wait till season four. Okay, fine.
Starting point is 00:03:59 Let's watch the high school, the musical, the series. Oh, is that it? He's ready for his dad to move on real quick. Yeah, it was like a day, but I'm okay with it. Oh, my gosh, I love this show so freaking much. I loved it, but I love the heart too. Oh, my God, you guys, oh, my God, you were? I'm on too much.
Starting point is 00:04:27 Prozac. I can't cry anymore. I told you guys that. You guys know I used to cry like all the time. Oh, man. It's the funniest thing you said. It's true. I want too much. I just can't cry. I just ask the doctor to lower it. It's a human emotion that is not accessible now that I have Prozac in my system. I'm going to lower it next week. The doctor said, okay, we'll lower it. And I went okay. I'd like to cry again. It's possible to cry from good happy tears. Good happy tears. I know it. But even then good happy tears. I have a limited range of emotion no prozac has numb me and i can only be at 50% capacity on my emotions i try to kind you know prozac is just like nope we we got you kid oh man look at gregory this show has heart
Starting point is 00:05:10 it really does it has especially even in the first episode the heart from like the homecoming and the two the two the carlos and the kid getting together and like he seems like wait dancing with you in public. Like that's the first thing that got me that they didn't need to say that that kid maybe not be ready to like fully come out and be like in a close.
Starting point is 00:05:34 They didn't need to say anything. They just showed it at the end and then all of them coming together at homecoming and dancing and backing him up. What a beautiful moment. Like that is all heart. And you know I'll complain about a movie or another thing where I'm like,
Starting point is 00:05:49 I just didn't feel the pool. I didn't feel the heart. Like what's the core of it? And they have core. They have core. Yeah. That was so beautiful. What was your favorite?
Starting point is 00:06:01 Both episodes made me cry. Yeah. The homecoming moment. I think acts of love will make me cry. Like, more sweeping acts of love will make me cry more than something heartbreaking, honestly. Yeah. I don't know why.
Starting point is 00:06:17 I think because real life there's enough sadness all the time that you're kind of just, you got to just used to it. Yeah. He was like, that's life for you, kid. Parents get divorced. It happens, man. It happens, man. We're used to it.
Starting point is 00:06:31 But also, it's a beautiful, like, when you see Ms. Jen, you're like, I want that to be me one day with all of my, if you need it. You're on the path. With all of our friends backing us up, how beautiful. Yeah. Well, I mean, what happened? I think we've been really lucky that the two episodes that we've, I feel like we've been watching these back to back, like two at a time. And they've fortunately been complimenting each other. really well. I agree. Like the last two, like I remember the third one was a little dramatic and the
Starting point is 00:06:59 fourth one got really heavy. And then this one was more about finding your authentic self and being true to that despite whatever your past is, is what I felt like both of these episodes were doing, that you form your own identity, that it's not really so much based off of labels or your past. It's about who you are now. And it's also defined by the actions that you take today. Yeah. And I think that is a really powerful thing to convey to everyone. Yeah. It's like even for like an adult, it's really powerful. And yeah,
Starting point is 00:07:32 I think the ending moment with the homecoming was really sweet because them finding their self-confidence and their individuality at homecoming instead of relying on feeling confident and their greatness through other people, but finding it within is really strong. Yeah. And then putting this emphasis on this gem
Starting point is 00:07:47 where they realize they're a family and that she really is their leader and they all congregate around her. Yeah. And I just love the way they go into the musicals. Yeah. Because they're doing a musical number, but it's in the right realm of you haven't broken reality too far. Right.
Starting point is 00:08:04 It comes at the right time. Right in the, like in high school musical, the movies, it feels like we are breaking into a big song and dance number. Agreed. And here it still feels like they could just, they're finding that right pitch where it's, it's still the part of the scene. Yes. It feels in camera. Yeah, it's really well done. Like, melt it in together.
Starting point is 00:08:26 They still do it in a way where it's like they could be doing it. I mean, the homecoming one, I think they earn it where they go a little bit bigger. Yeah. But even right here, when they're all doing in the cafeteria, it feels like just a bunch of kids who pulled this off. I agree. I got goosebumps, like, because they do it slowly and it becomes part of the script when you see them stand up. And you're like, it's kind of like you get that feeling. And I always, like, cry at the end of, like, romantic comedies when the guy's like,
Starting point is 00:08:51 all his friends come together and he has to like run to go save to go get the girl it makes me sob like i'm like in my apartment like i want it and like this is the same it gave me that same feeling because it it melded in 32 minutes they found a way to meld a script in the words and make it believable and give us heart without a lot of expedition of just exposition of a lot of stuff that we needed to see with her struggling. They didn't need to give us the full rundown. The full rundown kind of came when she was at the court or whatever with the high school. But like we knew that
Starting point is 00:09:27 she was going through something and so were the kids. At the same time, they're going through like losing her and her losing them and us needing to see like what a huge impact she had and then there's that run to the airport where it's like slowly worked into the script. One girl stands up and then they have
Starting point is 00:09:43 the signs and they work into the song and you're just like, wow, goosebumps city. But they also give you all the fun high school drama. Yeah, I know. The high school drama. This, what is the girl's name? The one who's not Nini.
Starting point is 00:09:57 Court. Courtney. Her for her best friend. The one. Oh, I don't know. Damn, I'm forgetting her name. The hot dancer girl. Yeah, I told her name.
Starting point is 00:10:06 I don't remember. First, she's with E.J. She was with E.J. Then she's a Ricky. And they call her. What is her? God, damn name. She's kind of like the not so good hot dance girl.
Starting point is 00:10:16 We'll just call her that. But even this show is doing. I think they do a really good job at earning your, erding characters likeability is what I think they do a great job at. So a lot of times when they want to make characters more likable in a show, it feels like producer note or perfunctory. Yeah, yeah. You could see the machinations of them like turning the wheels to like, oh, we got to, we got
Starting point is 00:10:40 to change his character up to make them more appealing to the audiences. And I think, I think with her, I wish I knew what I did. I think with her, the way they got to there, because she seemed like such a evil person with like the whole thing at homecoming. And when you get to this ladder episode, I found myself going like, oh, maybe I do my like her with Ricky.
Starting point is 00:11:03 I don't know. At first I'm like, no, no, no. And now I'm going, but maybe actually, now that she's getting more in tune with her true self. Because that's what I think this show does a really good job at revealing with their characters in a realistic enough way that a lot of time, the types of emotions that we put on whether it be aggression for that character is a big one
Starting point is 00:11:24 like where you feel like if to posture yourself a certain way yeah she but as you reveal who they really are underneath it's like with e.J you know like he has a certain thing about himself where he has to pitch himself as this perfect guy yeah but as time goes on you're like you're the most insecure one out of everyone here he is hyper insecure and so i like the way they reveal these characters and then the more honest you get about them, the more likable they become. And even with Ricky, where I remember in the first episode
Starting point is 00:11:53 being like, this guy's so like not likable, but I've really grown to love him. Yes. Even when he makes choices that are not, that are human, you know, makes mistakes or says something he shouldn't say. Like, they're human mistakes.
Starting point is 00:12:04 And characters, I think that's the thing is they know, that's what it is. They don't, they know how to write flaws about their characters that still make them more endearing and not rely on likability by making them like flawless in this gracious light sort of way they let them make mistakes they let
Starting point is 00:12:21 them they show their flaws and that's it's really hard to write characters where you don't put them into antagonistic territory and you don't fear like making it a character unlikable by their mistakes right you they just wrote her as human for the the hot dancing like the dance girl the hot dance girl you guys know uh we don't know our name but like the way that they did it the hot What is her goddamn? We should know her name. What is her name? We don't, I don't know, but hot,
Starting point is 00:12:52 hot, good dance girl. When she's in the car, because we thought there's all this background of her not doing some good juice here, and then she's in the car with Ricky. And not only do we see their chemistry, but we see her as a human being building him up, giving him positive affirmations and going like,
Starting point is 00:13:10 and also the thing that really got me is before they got in the car, she's like, we all have bad family. drama and you see it in her eyes and the way that she delivered that line she felt it and it was like yeah you need to look behind the curtain always there's always a reasoning for someone's behavior which is why immediately they're like Carlos are you okay like you're freaking out and you don't normally do this yes there was a reasoning there's a reasoning behind her being so perfect at everything and i'm sure there's probably a really messed up controlling situation maybe back at home
Starting point is 00:13:42 and i could they didn't need to see all i'd say all of that will probably get to to see it. But that made her more human. That made us go, there's a reasoning here while she's like this. And then as she opened up to Ricky, all we needed was two lines of her. She built him up. And then you're like, she's not a bad person. She's just put in this circumstance. And we're seeing things where she's competitive. And she needs to win. And she's insecure too. And I bet you that if she doesn't win, there's problems. Not only in her brain and inner heart and inner soul, because we know and we want something, we don't win it, but probably back at home, which is why she is perfect. It's like Tiger Mom status, that now we're understanding her more.
Starting point is 00:14:24 And I think that's another reason why, you know, her and Ricky, she can kind of see that, that unstable situation and be kind of take it head on with him, which is why I was like, this chemistry and this thing, it might work out. He can open up to her. Like, she's just as damaged as everyone else in this, honestly. Yeah. And they really do a good job. of doing that one by one, taking their time because initially there's a lot of shows that
Starting point is 00:14:50 try to do that and they do a good job. The pilot would be longer, though, it would be an hour to kind of set up within two episodes everybody's background to get us on board. They take their time with it. I'm not mad at it. I love it. And every time I'm left going, I want more. Yeah. I'm obsessed. And they also surprisingly handle exposition in a really well done way. It never feels like they're just dropping exposition on us. Like this journey with the dad, I'm really liking a lot more. And even with Jen, which started off as like a certain quirk, right? Like, oh, you're that drama teacher, or he character, right?
Starting point is 00:15:27 Like, that kind of character's been done a billion times. So it's easy to, like, fail at that character. But humanizing her more over time and her accepting herself and the truth as well has been really great. Yeah. And even Carlos, we haven't really learned a lot about his backstory, but learning about him via through interact. actions and the pressure and trying to be a he's really like the leader of the whole thing you know and i love the romance that's forming there with him yeah there's a lot to love about this show i like the movies for very different reasons that i like the show you know like the movies are are
Starting point is 00:15:58 like silly campy but they're also like full of heart but they're but you know you're walking into like something really kind of cheesy and i love it i really love those movies yeah but you You kind of like, you kind of have to, like, laugh with it. Whereas this one is, and it's like they're badass in their own way. But this is like a real story. It's just subtle. And it's more of a real, like, show. I agree.
Starting point is 00:16:27 It has more realistic heart at it, which is why it's like, we don't get Troy jumping on top, which we loved, jumping on the golf course and starting his song. It was just like, here he goes. And I remember in the, I think it was the second movie, we were like, yeah, we were cheering. And this one is more like we're cheering like we are cheering, but also on the inside. We're overcome more with emotion from everything they tie into every move they make in this show. And I think it just does a better job at being subtle because the subtlety in it is more human. It's just more, it's just more like I could see kids doing exactly what they did and it not being outrageous and like no way that would happen.
Starting point is 00:17:08 I'm like, no, I believe that that could happen. The way they did it, that could happen for Ms. Jen at any school. Like, I, it's just the subtle, the subtlety they play with, I think they do a great job, which is why I'm just more connected to, I love the movies. You guys saw my area, I love that juice. But this, to me, radiates more because it's just, it's more real. It gets me. It gets you, man.
Starting point is 00:17:32 It gets me. These last two episodes really show me that the high school musical movies never really showed you what musical theater is like here. Yeah, and this does. Yeah, because there's so much about like the god who is Troy Bolton who can succeed. He's like number one basketball player, never had training, number one singer, number
Starting point is 00:17:51 one dancer. He's never whatever. So good. And that's part of what makes it funny. It's just like, you're a god. And I root for you to level up all the time. Right. Whereas here, you got a lot more of this underdog and a lot of learning about who you really are and great relationships, you know? Right.
Starting point is 00:18:07 I like this. I love this. This is a really good Because in theater, you guys, I mean, when you find your crew of people and you land in theater, the job of, like, the theater director is finding your different strengths that you have that are not going to be hot, super number dance girl. We forget her name, right? She's good at everything. There's going to be people who have strengths that are like, well, he can play the guitar and sing, but he's not the best dancer. And there's also strengths where it's like she can probably just sing and she might also be kind of a good dancer, but not as good as the hot. girl name that we forgot you find your strengths in the community of with theater that you're like the one line that resonated with me the most is when he walks in he has his makeup on and he says
Starting point is 00:18:51 i'm home yeah because that's what theater and and drama club and being doing musicals at school being in you feel at home why because i finally found a place where i belonged there's these weird, corky things about me and things that I could offer that I'm not running around given to the real world. It doesn't come up in the real world. I'm not like dancing on the sidewalk and saying, sure, at home, I'm saying I'm playing my guitar, but like that gave me an opportunity in a stage to actually share that. And that gave me worth. And that's what people find in theater. When you join like drama class or acting or music, you find worth like deep down at your core, you're like, this is such a magical thing that I can share with people that not everybody can
Starting point is 00:19:40 do. And even though these weird, corky people that you're like, they're kind of weird, but then they sit down, they play the piano, they sing a song, and they are not weird at all. They might be weird in social situations, but you hear them sing or you see them dance, and that's where their soul shines, and that's what theater gives to people. Yeah, that's why Tara's loud. Yeah, too loud. In case you notice, theater people are loud. very too loud and loud and loud and loud yeah that's i mean we're real hyper and then we're real low-key yeah full of so much depression and then just i'm down in the dumps i'm watching tv i'm going home and watching tv for four hours to recover it's theater people man yep welcome to my life
Starting point is 00:20:20 people are something special we love you it's a real community it's a real community depression masked by hyperactivity is what theater ultimately is meds got a lower them we'll see once they get lowered you guys it might be crying again. We'll look forward to that, right? I mean, this is why you guys need to share these videos, because I love this show, so stinking much. He's crying. I want, I'm going to cry to. We got to get to the point where I'm, I'm feeling it just as much. I am. You're not reacting good enough, Tara. I am. The fact that you're not reacting hard enough. No, it's so funny. You must react more. You guys know that since, if you don't know my story in your new joining here,
Starting point is 00:21:00 that since long COVID, I got long COVID. Then I couldn't be here. Okay? And And I had to get on the meds to be like, raise that styrtoning back up so we can get to a place or we can do some living. And now I'm back at living and we'll talk. We'll bring the little meds now so I can be more of me, which is an emotional person. And then we can bring it to you. So I might cry. I might not. We don't know.
Starting point is 00:21:21 But I'm just telling you my life story here because you guys are my friends. Are you sure you can't cry due to the, maybe you've just made yourself believe it? I'm telling you. It repressed tear ducts. It's repressed a lot of things. Prozac does a lot of things and I'm only on a small like even a small amount but trust me
Starting point is 00:21:39 I talked to my psychiatrist and he was like let's slowly lower it for you and see if that comes back and I went great because I'm sure we have to keep an eye on the depression to make sure that if it lowers that that's not coming back I'm sure you guys are feet of kids here you guys know what we're all
Starting point is 00:21:55 dealing with anxiety depression we all got a little bit of that juice now we got to keep an eye and make sure that doesn't pop its ugly head back up in two too bad a ways, but that doesn't mean, like, I can still, you can still, a normal human being goes through emotions, cries, feels bad, doesn't have self-confidence, you don't have great days, and sometimes you've got to put a good face on and do it. And I still, sometimes we'll have to go through that even on meds, just not as much, and I just don't feel as much. And I'm sure
Starting point is 00:22:24 that you guys might experience that if you were on the same train as I am. And I am not scared of feeling those things. I felt all of those things for so many years that I'm like, I can live with those things just not at the depth that they were at long COVID time.
Starting point is 00:22:39 And so that's what meds are important, talking to people is important, talk to your friends, support. I'm here for you. Spread hugs, loving laughter. I'm giving you the juice of my life because in case you need to hear it, I'm here.
Starting point is 00:22:50 There's the juice. That's the juice right there. You got any last word? Do you want to tell them? I want to tell these people? No, man. Feel your feelings, people. It's really important. Feel your feelings.
Starting point is 00:23:00 It's true. We love you guys. Share this because we want to watch all of it. And we're so excited that you're here and sharing this. And spread hugs up and laughter. Thank you for all the comments and giving us all the juice the laydown. I love the laydown where you're like, Olivia Rodriguez and this guy. And Ricky is the song where she wrote driver's license for Ricky, that actor.
Starting point is 00:23:20 And then I'm like, yeah, give me all the juice. She wrote that song on the piano in the last episode. They confirmed that, yeah. Yes. And apparently it was like done on TikTok or no. So she wrote it and then performed it within like 48 hours or something, but she used to also be TikTok star. You guys give us all the juice.
Starting point is 00:23:36 We love you for it. We appreciate you being here. We're going to get through this together because high school, musical, the musical, the series, all of it is the best. We love you, and we will see you on the next one. Bye. Ian Simon. Now, whenever Ian Simon says that we have to give him a.
Starting point is 00:23:59 Shout out. We always do. When Ian Simon says, you show up at my house unannounced, I go, let me just validate that for you even more so. We will consistently shout out. We'll show up. There's no retakes here. We're just consistently show up.
Starting point is 00:24:17 Ian Simon says, go rob a liquor store. We go rob a liquor store. On it. How much liquor do you want. Listening to that song from Pineapple Express. Yeah, ching, ching, come on take your money. Yeah, all I want to do is that the song? Yeah, and then if Ian Simon says, give me all your clothes, your boots, and your motorcycle, I go, I don't own one of those three.
Starting point is 00:24:46 Back two, because I don't own boots either. I will find a way to provide for you boots in a motorcycle. Give you the skin off my feet, but especially clothes.
