Join Aaron Alexander & John Humphrey as they return to Berk in DreamWorks Animation’s epic sequel How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014). Five years after uniting Vikings and dragons, Hiccup (Jay Baruchel, Entourage, This Is the End) and Toothless discover a hidden dragon utopia ruled by the mighty alpha Cloudjumper, voiced by Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond, Guardians of the Galaxy). Meanwhile, fearless Astrid (America Ferrera, Ugly Betty, Onward) leads dragon patrols—until vengeful dragon hunter Drago Bludvist (voiced by Djimon Hounsou in the UK release) threatens global domination with his ruthless armada of war dragons. When Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler, 300, Olympus Has Fallen) and Gobber (Craig Ferguson, The Late Late Show, How to Train Your Dragon) fall into peril, Hiccup must team up with lost dragon rider Valka (Cate Blanchett, Thor: Ragnarok, Blue Jasmine), whose mysterious past holds the key to Drago’s downfall. The film also features Kristen Wiig (as spunky Ruffnut), Jonah Hill (as Snotlout), and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (as Fishlegs) in standout turns. A-A-Ron & Johnald break down every soaring highlight—from the breathtaking forest rescue where Hiccup and Toothless learn to ride in perfect harmony, to the jaw-dropping final battle above Drago’s warship, and the tear-jerking midpoint reveal of Valka’s hidden sanctuary. Don’t miss their take on the film’s stunning animation, emotionally charged character arcs, and why the “Seize the Day” ensemble anthem remains one of the most searched-for moments in modern animation. it shows man
I mean that dude is a renowned cinematographer
and this had some very beautiful photography
not to mention this art that is playing over the credits
Arun
what did you think
I liked it a lot
I thought it was really
strong sequel
I thought it did a really good job
but elevating the
mythology that was established from the first one
showing how times have changed
in the last five years
giving us some plausible backstory
to why hiccup is
so endeared
to dragons naturally
and where he got his
skill from getting to reunite
with his mom
and his mom and dad reunite
and seeing this man trying to believe there's another way to find peace
and then kind of come into terms with the fact that, you know,
some people just aren't for peace.
Some people just want to watch the world burn.
That's right.
Some people, Batman.
Some people, Batman.
Some people Joker.
This was the Dragon Joker.
But, yeah, I thought it was really cool.
The visuals continue to be impressive.
The way that they show the passage of time subtly.
you know with with facial hair and like changing the character designs and seeing the scars in
their faces i thought all that stuff was really good charred butler delivered a really i don't know
like dynamic performance with you know showing how he's changed since the first movie he's also
showing a tenderness when he sees his wife again and you really see that care and the from the
first movie through this one the evolution of him and hiccups relationship and seeing
how he has adapted and sort of altered his views but also wanted to keep hiccup safe
and seeing the true test of that in his sacrifice at the end there are towards the end
it was really sad it was really unexpected for him to get taken out like that and i understand
the emotional complexities of you know you you're upset and you know you're dragging your best
friend took out the dad or your dad but it also wasn't his fault so him having that reaction was
was very believable very plausible um yeah i think overall i i really enjoyed it i think i still like
the first one a little bit more um some of the stuff was a little bit fast for me like i felt
the dad's death through the end of the movie if like we had like a moment to feel that but then
kind of like kept had to keep it moving but um yeah i i i
really enjoy the way that this expanded on the mythology and that it makes sense that the next logical step from hiccup being the one to change his world to then him leading burke i feel like that you know feels like the natural progression for that character given what his father's role was and then introducing that theme of you know taking on responsibility coupled with you know seeing what what being part of the world of dragons is like and
and exploring acceptance and freedom and belonging through his mother.
I thought all that really worked well in tandem together.
So, yeah, really strong follow-up to the first one.
That makes a strong segue into a couple of our patron questions.
As a matter of fact, we are grateful to those who have,
what we're trying to do these days now,
especially if you've been paying attention to the recent videos,
is we ask our patrons to guide the conversation with a few questions here.
and we're going to jump into a couple of those
before we continue the straight on review
but Game Night J-14
had this question for how to train your dragon two
with the death of Stoic
and the beginning of Hickup as Chief.
How do you think this will affect the third movie?
Oh.
Yeah.
I feel as though Hickup
not being accustomed to a position of leadership
and really being someone
who's kind of gone against the grain
his whole life may struggle
in the role of what it's like to be someone
who's largely independent, gone from an outcast
to being someone who is
an independent wanting to figure out how to hone
what it's like to just have a relationship with his dragon
and explore what it's like to be in love with dragons as a whole.
I feel like him learning how to be more
of a commanding presence or leader with
when it comes to humans,
maybe a part of the contrast and struggle.
Maybe even though he is put in a position,
to be a leader maybe he will have some semblance of resistance or not feel worthy of that role
in the face of it kind of being bestowed upon him without his um not his acceptance of it but
it wasn't in the way that he probably anticipated it so it's more like something that that
had to happen out of necessity rather than something that he chose to step into um so yeah
I think that's kind of what potentially could happen.
Absolutely.
I'm very curious to see how the next movie handles it.
And part of me expects, yeah, that you're going to deal with the, you know, growing pains of accepting a new mantle and a new role.
And I would imagine that for a character like Higop, he's probably going to have to find his own version of what being the leader means.
like I could imagine that a lot of the, you know, you'll probably have Gobber and other people, you know, trying to guide him and giving him, you know, all these different tips and things about what his dad would have done and all the different responsibilities and here are all the other things you got to learn and he just wants to be out there, you know, in the world.
So part of me wonders if he might hand off this role by the end of the franchise to someone else or if he will find kind of a different way of leading them in his own step and his own role.
rhythm, you know, and I can kind of see both because, yeah, like, especially here they make
that a theme, you know, it's like, oh, you're being primed to take over as chief. And actually, you know,
I can definitely see how this might, again, you know, after the third one, we'll kind of reassess
everything. But I can see how this might function. Yeah, like as a middle chapter. This is a very
sort of direct plot to this. And you do get some rich developments and whatnot, especially with
mom and the reunion between Stoic and her and all three of them all together and stuff.
But yeah, there is a lot that is tied up in Bludevist and, you know, this sort of dragon war of
sorts, whereas I wonder if the next one will maybe breathe a little bit more and come
back to, like, I know there has to be like an outside physical threat of some kind or, you know,
I think the third movie even has like a subtitle.
So there may be some kind of other place that we go visiting.
visit and explore. But I have to imagine that this franchise, based on what they've given us up
till now, I don't imagine that it'll be just your simple, you know, rising to the mantle. I have
to imagine that they'll subvert our expectations, at least a little bit with that. But it definitely
seems like it's going to majorly be part of the, you know, the foundations of the next movie. And
like, I feel like, yeah, I wonder if maybe in the next one we will kind of have some looking back
and being like, man, I really do miss him because I agree.
Like, I really like the moment in the movie that we got,
but there is a lot of action at hand.
And by the time you get to the end, there is a lot of triumph and a lot of victory.
I feel like if this was maybe a live action movie or something like that,
we would have done maybe one more scene towards the very end of him being like,
I really miss my dad.
I'm really feeling that the hurt of this loss.
And now that I have my mom back, you know, like part of my heart is restored just in time for another part of it to be ripped out.
And, you know, like, yeah, I could, I can imagine how maybe they might infuse some of that into the next one.
But either way, it does seem like a very strong choice to have made just in terms of the plotting overall and the character journey overall.
Didn't see it coming, didn't remember it.
So that hit like a wallop.
And, you know, Gerard Butler is so fun to watch and so fun to listen to.
I would be really sad that he's not in the next one, honestly.
And now thinking about the live action ones, I'm like, holy crap, we're going to have to go through that in live action with the real guy.
And actually, segueing into Mark's question, Mark, thank you for chiming in.
Thank you, Mark.
Do you guys, oh, hi, Mark.
Do you guys think this was destined for a live action, or do you all think that it wasn't?
And the success of the anime film, the animated film propelled the idea.
I would definitely say that the success of the animation propelled the.
yeah the hop into live action like because this is a book you know with illustrations and stuff
like that the hop into an animated feature seems like the most natural thing and then because
we live in a time where Disney's doing all their glut of remakes and whatnot and live action
adaptations of all the dream works things that exist this makes the most sense to do right
and it lends itself as much as people have seen the trailer for the new one and have said like
it's the same thing, just live action.
I'm not as mad about that for some reason.
Because, like, hey, these movies have been great so far.
I expect the third one to stick the landing.
And, yeah, like, as much as I get the sort of redundancy factor of, like, do we need to do this?
I'm like, I'm kind of excited to see how they bring it together.
But I don't think it was always part of the plan.
And I think that the timing is indicative of the fact that, like, they took a cue from what Disney's been doing
and maybe setting themselves like this is one of the most well-renowned and well-liked DreamWorks animated movie franchises in general probably the most arguably and so yeah it makes sense that they would consider it for this one in particular but i think yeah the disney thing is a big factor
rejagnation i don't know about you but money used to intimidate me used to it definitely still intimidates me growing up i'm sure you guys are the same thing too gotta start investing early it'll pay off in the future
But no one actually taught me how.
And by the time I realized I needed to start, I already felt like I was behind.
And that's why I'm really grateful for today's sponsor, this company.

Thank you, Acorns, for sponsoring this video and for up in the bank account look a little bit better.
Yeah, I think that obviously because it's,
a book there may be more
room for them to adapt
some of that other stuff that maybe they didn't get the chance
to in the initial version of the movie
my hope is that it validates
one gives
the fans
what they love in the sense that
we remind them
why they love that movie in the first place but also give them
something in addition to
that first one that validates and
justifies it being a remake
yeah I'm excited to see
what stuff they oh my
mage 2 slash replicate but i'm also excited to see the ways they expand on some stuff that maybe
they couldn't do in the the animated version i know it's the same director from not mistaken as the
first live action movie i don't know if it's the same director for all three but you know given
i hope it's one of those experiences of you know if i knew yeah if i knew then what i know now
and being able to expand upon some of those things you weren't able to do or wanted to do um with
say no iteration of the story.
Yeah, I think that's a strong point, too.
Yeah, it's because it's the same director.
Like, it seems like a neat film experiment.
And, yeah, like, here's some things that maybe live action can provide you that you can do most
anything with animation.
But I wonder, and I'm curious about, yeah, what charms and nuances live action will bring
in that maybe are different from the animated.
But, yeah, I don't think it was necessarily always part of the plan, but it makes a lot of
sense to me more so than a lot of other attempts at stuff like this. And then finally from Andrew
Laxton. Thank you. Thanks for chiming in. Have you seen the new How to Train Your Dragon Park
at Universal yet or any videos of it looks pretty awesome? I have not. I didn't know they were making
this. Right. That's cool. Is that out here or is that in Florida? I don't know. I thought I would
have heard about that. Yeah, you would think. I mean, I'm very excited to see it because I mean this is
absolutely a kind of
watching, I think even during
the first one, one of us might have remarked
even that like, they should make a ride out of this.
This looks like the perfect place to make like
a land in some kind of theme park.
So, I mean, yeah.
We could be great in 40X.
That's what we're talking about.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Because then, you know, and I mean, you would hope,
I think that how to train your dragon world
and ride would have more than just simulators
even though Universal loves their
simulators.
where is the how to trade your dragon theme park i have to imagine it's in florida because it's like
florida's its own land yeah it's the universal epic universe in orlando florida is one of five
themed worlds within the newly opened universal epic universe theme park golly uh wow
i'll just show you a picture and then we'll try and flash it on screen that's burke whoa
you really recreated burke that's amazing created my my buddies my fire buddy
Oh, my God. Yeah, we'll have to dive into some of these because, yeah, like, at least looking at these little images on the phone, this looks pretty dang, spectacular, and I'm jealous of the Floridians. But thank you guys for your questions. And, yeah, like, I would agree. Like, I really like this. I think it's a nice expansion. I imagine that this installment will breathe best once you've taken in the third one. Not to say that it doesn't stand nicely on its own, because, I mean, you know, coming out of the first one,
uh it builds nicely on it it's cool to see hiccup way more into his element yeah and yeah and
you know the expansions on the dragons feel you know every sequel's like oh you got to go bigger
you got to do more but this felt really natural like oh we've only just discovered how to coexist
with dragons as of the first movie now we're exploring the world we're filling out the map we're
discovering what other uh creatures live out there and what other you know methods of communing with them
exist and the way that he interfaces with his mother and the whole like back and forth when he
first encounters her and they're flying through the clouds and you're like who is this is this
Vlad Vlad Blutvist or is this somebody else and like the traditional garb that she has on is really
cool and yeah like their reunion was great the reunion between her and stoic and the three
of them I thought was really terrific everybody who returned from the previous movie to provide
comic relief and to fill out the rest of the characters
was fun to listen to.
You know, Kit Harrington, nice
addition. I'm curious if he
grows into a bigger, more important
character in the next one.
Jam on Hansu, like, you know, props to him,
Hunsu, I think.
You know, he's giving
it so much and
as much as, like, I admire
this movie for making him, like,
to a degree, a truly hateable
character, even though you understand
him, to a degree,
and yeah like doing a Disney but in the more direct way where it's like we start these movies off with like his mom is gone we think she's dead for all intents and purposes and then in this movie in the text of the movie we actually do lose dad
which is just like a coming of age thing articulated in a way where it's like I have to imagine some kids saw the first movie as young children and then are at least teenagers or growing up alongside hiccup
and so are probably in a more direct way as of this movie being exposed to, you know, loss of that magnitude.
And yeah, you know, while as a viewer, part of me is like, oh, man, maybe just a little more on the drama for that just because it is such a loss.
You know, like Gerard Butler is a huge part of this franchise and Stoic is so fun and has, you know, his relationship and the growth between him and Hickup has been some of the most important stuff in the series.
But that's really kind of my only complaint.
And yeah, like the evolution of toothless
and the, you know, giant alpha dragons and stuff like that.
Just a lot of like really fun, but also sensible and gripping stuff
and stuff that plays off of, you know, animal nature.
And, you know, the way they personify the dragons is a lot of fun
because they feel fanciful and of this world
just as much as they feel like dogs and cats.
So, yeah, man, this is really fun.
And it continued that sort of breathtaking awe of, you know, the flight sequences and just all the elements and everything.
Yeah, it doesn't quite breathe as much.
It's a little more breathless than the first movie because there's this like looming threat that we got to like stop because it's coming and it's going to wipe out everything.
And it's in, you know, this guy's really bad.
But other than that, yeah, I thought this was a lovely continuation.
And I can't wait for part three.
Yeah, same.
I, um, I had a good time.
And it's no alcohol required.
No alcohol required.
Charlotte Jamie Johns.
But yeah, you know, it was a five-year gap or four-year gap between the first and the second one.
And I think there's another five-year gap between the second and third one.
So I'm excited to see if there's another big gap in universe or if it's immediately following the events.
We'll see.
But, yeah, I feel good about this one and I had a good time watching it.
Hell yeah, man.
Oh, yeah, brother.
Well, gang, leave us your thoughts on how to drain your trigger.
Train your dragon dose
That was the remix
Let me know your thought
Oh and shouts out to Kate Planchett
I really liked her voice performance
I thought she was really
She fit nicely into the cadence
And into the
I forget what her actual accent is
I feel like she's British right
But she put on that sort of Viking
Slash Scottish Brogue
And I thought her
Just the cadence that she brought
Really had a sort of mystic quality
That would be fit somebody
who's been removed from things
and living amongst these creatures
and probably hasn't had a person
to talk to in a long time
and just the reasons why
she kept her distance
and the whole story of her and Stoic
I thought was really lovely.
But yes, gang,
leave us your thoughts.
Who's your favorite dragon?
Who is your favorite supporting character?
And we'll catch you on part three
and then we'll catch you for the live action.
Who knows would be on that.
Anyway, be well.
And dragons.
