Starting point is 00:01:22 We're going to watch Howl's Moving Castle. Do you feel ready? I do. I feel ready to move with this castle. Okay. it gave me just artistically beautiful it gave you like the feels the emotion and they didn't even have to do a lot it's just like sophy's character from beginning to end her love and her like humanity and her givingness just built up like she it's because she exists and she was
Starting point is 00:02:00 like a beautiful person, that she changed his world and all the people around her. I mean, she made the witch of the wasteland. She took her with her and made her like not so mean anymore and cruel. Helped her even though the witch put a curse on her. And she just spread love. And out of that came this beautiful little family at the end that would not exist without Sophie and her love. and her heart. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:32 And I just think that's such a beautiful story because, yes, we got a little bit, you were like, where is this going? And I was a little confused, too, by the lady in the wheelchair. That's what I keep calling her because I forget her name. Like, why is she putting this spell
Starting point is 00:02:49 on Christian Bale's character? Forgive me, guys. I've already forgotten all the character's name. How? How I, thank you. God, it's literally the title of the movie, Tara. Why is she putting this spell around Howl to make him become, I guess, a full-on bird knowing that the bird is going to attack against the war?
Starting point is 00:03:11 And then I guess she still needed her son, the prince, to remain having a spell on him so he wouldn't stop the war. Yeah. I, okay, I think those are, like for right now there's my thought. Go get in it. Get in it. Yeah, there's a lot of moving pieces in this movie. First off, I want to say for the 110th time, this movie is beautiful.
Starting point is 00:03:40 Yeah, and if you're listening on Apple or Spotify, give us a five-star rating. We love you. What's there I said. This movie is beautiful, not only visually from its art style, but in its music. And how much heart this movie had, you know, going off of Sophie or Emily. She was Sophie when she was old. than Emily and she was young, right? No, I was just calling her Emily because I knew Emily's
Starting point is 00:04:02 actresses name, right, right, right, right. Yeah, the whole time. That's why I kept blanking on, but her name's Sophie, yeah. Sophie, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, and just seeing her heart in display and, like, her kindness change the people around her and, like, them finding this found family. I definitely think that there's a lot going on in this movie.
Starting point is 00:04:21 I feel, for me personally, I feel like I need to see it a second time because just there's, there's a lot of people, I'm going to look up some facts while you're talking. I feel that there's, you know, how Miyazaki is such an expansive imagination. And I think there is this unconventionality to the way that he crafts his films that are not conducive or not in a way that we're accustomed to in modern media or at least a Western. animated films, just like Western films in general. And I admire the imagination on display. It left me with questions about, like, okay, like, what's going on with this lady who's
Starting point is 00:05:14 the, not the queen, but like the lady in the wheelchair, how we're talking about. Like, what's this war about? And these larger questions are not what the movie is about. These are just like things that are in service of the themes and the arc and the heart of the movie. Yeah. And I think I was spending a lot of time kind of focusing on those things and having those questions. I think I would like to, from a new lens, watch it purely based off of how this movie ends, what it gives us in the end. But that being said, yeah, I think the movie had a lot of heart.
Starting point is 00:05:50 It had endless imagination and incredible. visuals, not only in its stills, but when it would explore these different, not settings, that's not the word, but these different sequences in which we would go through. And its sense of wonder and whimsy was just like permeating throughout the entire experience. And yeah, it's a beautiful film. I understand why I won an Oscar. I understand why it's so well beloved. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:21 And yeah, it was, it's dope. And I'm curious to know what facts or what were you about to say. Okay, so the film features a moment with Christian Bale's distinct growl, which he would later use in Batman Begins. He was preparing for his role as Bruce Wayne Batman during the recording. Really? That is very interesting. That's fascinating. That's very fun, right?
Starting point is 00:06:47 So I would want to rewatch it to be like, wait, when does he growl? And like, that's him getting into Batman, which is very cool. And then, yes, it is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Welsh author, Diane Wynne Jones. Oh, Welsh, okay. So I don't know, obviously, anything about that book. This was Christian Bale's first animated film since Pocahontas. I've never smoked Hontas, actually. I have.
Starting point is 00:07:13 It's a great film, and I did not know that he was in it until I read that. And I guess Christian Bale, after seeing their first movie, this director's first movie, he immediately signed on board and said yes to him immediately. Oh, wow. And this is Billy Crystal's only animated film outside Monsters, Inc. Oh, wow. So I think they all came on to this, knowing how incredible they were. Okay, let's see.
Starting point is 00:07:43 Some of these are a little long, but I'm looking at the spoiler ones. Let me see if I can get to... Okay. In the novel, Sophie learned she also has magical powers and she is one that defeats the witch of the waist along with her own fire demon. Okay. Because we did kind of see her get like some kind of magic. Okay. I'll read this one. I don't even know the outcome. It's such a long thing. But let me get it to you. Throughout how's moving castle hats and hair are potent metaphors. The townspeople and the soldiers had symbolized conformity and corruption with the most over size hats indicating the worst character, such as the Witch of the Waste Hensman. Now, Sophie's journey starts in a hat shop denoting her lack of identity. This is also mirrored through her mother's flamboyant hat, which foretells betrayal, which she did. Grandma, Sophie's simple hat with three red berries signifies love.
Starting point is 00:08:39 That's what we're saying, that she is made a love and her future family, Sophie Hal and Markle. How's hair color shifts mark his emotional growth. and he rarely wears hats, reflecting his nonconformity. Sophie's gray hair signifies self-discovery, linking to Kalsh's strength to increase when he consumes her hair symbolizing Howell's love. Totally picked up on all of that. Wow.
Starting point is 00:09:06 Right? I'm like, oh, her hair symbolizes her, like, her self-discovery, linking it to Kalsiver's strength. And then when he could, when, when Kalser consumes her hair, it symbolizes Howl's love. So I get that, why, now I understand why Calcifer said, if it comes from you, I know that I can last. Yeah. I can keep him alive.
Starting point is 00:09:31 And that's, again, I mean, like what we, what I initially said was like, she's just full of love. And now that, that trivia said what I said, but in a better way, you guys. A smart, concise way. Yeah. It really did. It's so pretty. There's so many metaphors and hidden metaphors.
Starting point is 00:09:48 And I'm sure tons of Easter eggs in here that we did not. catch that we would love for you guys to like leave in the comments. I also think the um obviously the coloring is so beautiful and the lighting. I still don't know how they do it in animation. Like when they would light a candle and then it would just light everything beautiful in it. It was just so amazing. Everything in this, they just took, I appreciate how much thought and artistic quality they put into this film because it really shows with every shot from to the, the Sunday rise to the kind of the sun setting, to the cottage, and even when it looked dark and dreary, it was still beautiful. And I really also loved how when Sophie was old, she had all these
Starting point is 00:10:34 old wisdom quotes of like, isn't it funny when you get older, there are certain things that don't matter anymore. You don't get as scared. And when she's looking at the scenery, she's like, she loves to look at the scenery now. It's when you get older, you get wiser, and you You take in the small things. Yeah, you gain an appreciation for simplicity of life in general, you know, because you realize that the fleeting nature of things and just like how important these smaller moments are. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:07 I thought it was beautiful. And, yeah, just watching that all unfold and, like, gives you a greater appreciation for life, you know? Yeah. And taking in those scenery, it's like, yeah, I really should kind of like slow down, watch some sunsets more watch watch the ocean just kind of like breathe and like experience life in its stillness right which young people which i'll consider us both younger they we don't really do that like nobody does we're always like moving around go go go kind of like the little kid in this story
Starting point is 00:11:39 which is why it was so it was so sweet when you see him hugger and he's just like I love you and I want you to stay. Yeah. And like it, that was proving even when she was old, like it didn't matter because I still, even for me, y'all, and this is going to sound weird, I was just talking to my friend about this saying, the older I get, the more invisible I feel. So it's like, it's like you don't get flirted with as much. You don't get looked at as much.
Starting point is 00:12:08 Like you reach kind of a certain age and people just, they don't really see you as much. And I'm saying I'm not like old old, but I have already. My friend was also saying, yes, I absolutely agree. I have felt that even in the small-like aging that we still all notice that, which is why I was saying she probably feels invisible. And she also thinks that she's like not beautiful. And of course, Hal is like, what are you nuts? Like, of course you're beautiful.
Starting point is 00:12:40 And even with her silver, even though she did de-age, she still had her silver hair. and he was like, it's beautiful. So there's also that highlight of that age gives you that wisdom, but it can also be a beautiful experience, right? Yeah. Citizens of the Reject Nation, or should I say Royal Rejects, because that is who we call those who check out our RR Apparel at Rejectnation Shop.com. Every month that's been growing every month, we are getting more and more royal rejects. Starting point is 00:13:41 Deadpool Wolverine inspired, my personal favorite one. The newest edition, the To Me My Walkman shirt, inspired by the X-Men. Then we also got our number one bestseller, the Last Daddy T-shirt, which has Pedro Pascal from The Last of Us inspired, carrying baby Grogu. We have Loki's glorious balloon. Starting point is 00:14:14 pointing those out because obviously we have new seasons of those shows coming up and then of course you got a bunch of other designs as well like our bat first one who influences the influencers another last of us inspired t-shirt and of course you know the classic reject symbolism t-shirts as well either one is an amazing way to support the channel and like i said you get to look good while doing it so thank you guys so much do consider going to reject nation shop.com and also tag us on social media if you end up buying a shirt please tag us we'd love to see it when people People do end up buying the shirts. Thank you, Royal Rejects. See you guys soon. I like the fact that they were, there are two people that were both cursed with something, and they kind of like found love in spite of the fact that they did have these curses, him with his bird and her, they're aging.
Starting point is 00:15:01 Yeah. Yeah, I thought it was beautiful in the fact that she was still kind and courageous in the face of her being an elderly woman, elderly woman because that didn't stop her because she she had to drive you know she she really cared you can tell that she's just like someone even like her being in the house in the beginning she's like an 80 year old woman and she doesn't know these people but she still takes it upon herself to clean up house house because she cares about the environment that she's in like wants to have
Starting point is 00:15:35 and then she cooks for them as well yeah she cooks for them because she's just she just has a big heart from the beginning and I think that's something that there's like permeates throughout just her having that that infectious nature create and her being the one to essentially be the the nucleus to create this larger family you know granted markle and how are already there and calcifer was already there but having the witch of the the wasteland there and then having those the prince who was a scarecrow there then yeah then the dog joins the family and just all of them together kind of find this this kinship in one another and and they wouldn't have found it without her exactly yeah yeah and like without her bravery too because we see that
Starting point is 00:16:24 howl was like a coward right and when he was melting in his depression i thought that was such a great metaphor you guys because he was like he got sad and he said this is the only other time that's happened when someone broke up with him and i'm like oh that just sounds like when we get sad when we get depressed our demons get at us we start to think all the worst things about ourselves and we start to like malfunction and are like we want to die where you're just like this sucks so bad how do i even and he's melting and it's such a great like display of that is how we feel inside when terrible things happen to us and of course um it took sophie to lift him back up And if it wasn't for her and her good-hearted nature to pick him up off the floor and that's like what we need, sure, true loves for or just like true like friendships, people who just like love you can help you through those times.
Starting point is 00:17:20 And I think with her bravery and his like sort of cowardice heart, that came most into play when she went up against the lady in the wheelchair is what I'm going to keep on her because I don't remember her name. that when Sophie stood up and she odd when she got her brave when she got passionate and she got brave and she stood up to her and was like I understand you this is how you prowl people in and he's not going to come back she started to get young and she was brave and that is what he needed he needed her to be there for him to even be in the same room as the lady in the wheelchurch as it scared him but it did not scare Sophie and I love that this is like sort of a women-led Like that's a guy. Normally in a story, it's like the guy always saving the girl. And yes, yes, yes. I always think it should be, not always. But more often than not, I think it should be a female
Starting point is 00:18:18 heroine because like I just watched, you know, when you look at older movies, like 70s, 80s, it's always like the woman going like, I don't know what to do. Can you help? And she always has a guy for help. And I always am like, girl, you can fight too. So I really like that she was the lead in this, the pushing this, she knew to like take out Calsifer and like the house broke down and she took big risks and she saved them. And that is the reason why they have a big beautiful family now is because of her, because of a girl. And I really like that. Yeah. I think that's great. And I think that's something that's you're going to see more of that if we continue to watch. Oh, right. I would love to. You guys, he has seen Spirited Away. I haven't. And now I'm on this train of how do you
Starting point is 00:19:06 pronounce their names. Hio Miyazaki. Haya Miyazaki. Hopefully I'm saying that right. You are. I need to see all of Hau Miyazaki's films and also hit a girl up.
Starting point is 00:19:17 I'm trying to be in that. Oh my gosh. Also, the cast was outstanding. I believed all of the actors. I feel like the witch was modeled after Ursula when she was younger. She sounded just like Ursula. She had that same Ursula look.
Starting point is 00:19:31 And I just, everyone, obviously, Emily and Christian Bale and even the kid and it was just phenomenal cast and I believed everyone and bravo man i mean 10 out of 10 11 out of 10 stars i don't even know how much more i could give you for it being a work of art a great film with great pacing there was even some comedic moments it's heartfelt i wanted to go on that journey i wanted to know what was going to happen next and i felt it when i was supposed to feel it. Like when the kid says, I love you, when she kisses how, like when she just like spreads her love, it's like there's movies out there where I don't feel it.
Starting point is 00:20:13 And I'm like, they do something and I'm like, I'm not with it. This, I was with it. Yeah. So I'm also, I'll say real quick. Yeah. Is that I noticed, I didn't say as we were watching it, but I noticed the fact that when he was a kid, he had the black hair. Which means when he was, when he was blonde, he died it that way. Yeah. Because he didn't like himself. Exactly. And he was cowardice the entire time. He wanted to run from who he was. And, yeah, I was like, wow, that's like another layer to the lasagna that is this movie.
Starting point is 00:20:42 And I just, yeah, I just wanted to a little bit that. That's like the same as her because remember when she first turned old, she said, well, now at least it matches kind of my clothing or my insides. Because she was always kind of an old soul in that hat shop. And then her hair did change color. He brought it up. Like, it's a nice silver. or do you like it?
Starting point is 00:21:01 And she was like, yes. And obviously, she loved him whether he was a beast. She kissed him, a bird. And then she kissed him, obviously, when he's human, she didn't care. And I really like that his hair coming back only really happened once she came around. Yeah. Right? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:19 Like when he was a kid, then he changed it back, the cowardice. Then he started to grow into his own. And she loved him through it. He didn't need to change back. He thought, like, if I can't be beautiful. beautiful like what am i doing here and and sophie of course saw him as beautiful and didn't want him to leave whether he was looking like the bird or the human that he is with with his black hair which is so god i bet you there's so many more like hidden things in here oh yeah i'm sure there's
Starting point is 00:21:49 tons of video essays about this movie a lot i bet right okay so do you have any last things you want to tell the people before we skidat no I feel good. I feel content. That was a great experience. A powerful ride. Right. Content, I agree.
Starting point is 00:22:08 Like, when you watch this film, you just go, Bravo, you did it right. You did nothing wrong. We appreciate you. Ah, we love you so much. Please share this video, you guys. Comment. Let us know.
Starting point is 00:22:21 If this video does well, they'll have probably me and possibly Aaron go on for the next ones to watch them. And I would love to. too. So comment your little heart out. Like this video. Share it. We love you so much. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. And we will see you on the next one. Bye. Mikhail, Lyndon, to this day, I question whether or not you are from Switzerland or Sweden. Then I go, I believe Sweden. Yes. It's a genuine question I answered.
Starting point is 00:22:58 They're always 50-50 chance, though. That's good odds. And you're almost always right. You know what pains me, the facts about you, we don't know much more than just you like James Bond. And you liked Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, okay? I remember that kind of. After all this time, I'm still like, I don't really know much about this guy. Yeah, man, it's good, though.
Starting point is 00:23:24 It allows us to fill in the gaps with all kinds of wild. and wonderful musings about what your life could be i'll figure it out right now let's go swedish men cliches yes excellent got it please our typical swedish men like this are sweden board let's go okay beauty yeah we know that beauty ooh they're known for their friendly and welcoming nature clearly a Swedish person wrote this. They value honesty, equality, and respect of personal. Wow, they just sound like the best people. Perfect people.
Starting point is 00:24:03 We should all be Swedish. We all just love equality and honesty and respect people. All the time. And no one's intolerant to rude in Sweden. Oh, my God. They love being made fun of too. They can take a joke.
Starting point is 00:24:18 And we never really retaliate with anything harsher than what you said, so it's not to ruin It's just a good nature. I don't take it personally because clearly these Americans are just projecting their insecurities out on us. You know what? Wow. They do have a point. It is funny.
Starting point is 00:24:35 Jesus. Yeah. Whatever. Whatever. Hell with you, McHale. Yeah, Jesus. Who do you think you're better than me?
Starting point is 00:24:42 I'm done with you. I hate that you're so great. Oh, here we go. 13 you hate. It's stereotypes you hate. All right, here we go. Everyone eats herring. Are you eating herring?

Starting point is 00:25:26 I can't trust you. Dude. There's an agenda for everything. I just realized IKEA is in McHale's name. You have to switch the E and the A round, but it is right there. You can't spell Mikhail without Ikea. I-K-E. You can't smell it, though.
Starting point is 00:25:44 It's in your blood. That's a Swedish thing. Mee-paws. You know, phone is in John Humphrey's there What if you take out some of the letters And you're just, I said you move some It's in my whole name though Not in just my first man
