Hey, I'm Seth Shackner.
Check out my new show.
down the biz. Every week I sit down with people who actually make movies, music, and media happen.
Executives from Sony, Universal, Apple, NBC. Together, we cut through industry jargon and hype to show
you how the business is built. What's key to making everything come together and why it matters to you.
From iTunes impact on the music industry to the advent of AI, from the Taylor Swift ticket sales
fiasco to Bad Bunny's
meteoric rise, we break down the
stories, the numbers, and the
negotiations that shape the industry.
I've been in the trenches of the entertainment industry
for several decades with leadership roles
at companies like Sony, Paramount, and Jive Records.
My guests and I are going to provide
the same thoughtful, concise
insights that I'm trusted to bring
on TV networks like CNN and NBC
surrounding the industry and its
culture-defining moments.
We'll touch on the business of music,
filmmaking, and streaming, and the emerging
technology of our time. If you've ever wondered what really happens behind the scenes of the entertainment
business, this is a bite-sized insider guide. Subscribe now on your favorite podcast platform or watch
us on YouTube so you never miss a beat. Let's make sense of this industry together. I just quoted
another vampire property. Oh, which one? Twilight, say it out loud. What are you talking about? That's
literally one of the famous Twilight quotes. Say it out loud? Say it out loud. You mean, oh,
She first confronts him about being a vampire?
I don't remember even what the...
God damn it.
Look, we're watching the show.
Good episode.
Really solid.
What a fascinating new start.
With a whole new girl.
You like her?
What'd you say?
Did you like her?
Huh?
Were you not just hearing us?
What?
No.
Are you fucking with me or no?
No.
You were playing my voice.
No, I wasn't.
my voice was just playing.
I said one more time
everybody feeling fine
in the headphones.
Oh, I'm assuming
because I hit this garage band thing.
Okay.
Did you like that girl?
It's hard for me to gauge it yet
because, right?
Like, it's not that she's not doing a good job.
She definitely is,
but it's different.
And I loved our last Claudia
and they built so much chemistry together
and that's the whole purpose.
But I do feel like they,
I will end up eventually liking her.
It's just,
you know it's like when you go to see a play and it's the understudy performing
that doesn't mean that they're actually not as good as the person that you went to go see
it's just not who you expected to see and we didn't know how'd you feel about her
yeah i always have a hard time like readjusting to a recasting no matter who it is
i always have a very hard time it's rare where i'm like i have just slipped into this new person
so almost every time she was on screen i was aware i was looking at a new person i know me too
she's like different she's different too she's not playing the same person like her mannerisms
were different her facial expressions are different her speech patterns like everything it's not fair to
like judge right because i don't know i don't feel like we got enough yet i mean i still bought
into the narrative but it wasn't it was definitely like a part of me that was i was watching
her more in a way that i probably wouldn't have watched
is just because I'm like observing a new performance now.
So yeah,
but no,
she was good.
It's a really hard role to fill.
It's one of the rare cases where I wish we had a heads up
because we kind of just learned in the middle of it.
But I wonder if I like most people who watch us,
I didn't get a heads up.
They're like,
oh,
there's a new person here.
Yeah,
I agree.
And like in the marketing that I saw,
it was the picture of the other girl.
So,
but we must have been looking at season one or,
yeah,
season one marketing.
Or maybe it's some intentional new casting thing for story purposes.
I really feel like it might be the age.
I don't know how many years were apart.
Yeah, let's Google it.
What if the Googling ruins it?
Why did they recast?
I don't think it could.
Claudia.
Umpersed scene circumstances.
Offensized scheduling conflicts with other projects like Avatar.
I didn't even know she was an avatar.
Yeah, she must be one of the characters.
Yeah.
Huh.
Oh, okay.
So no, it was just a recasting of Claudia.
Huh.
Well, they had to be a recasting.
to work with that and I'm glad that I'm actually glad I think the way they handle it was actually pretty cool
by just putting it on the screen yeah me too we don't need to spend time with that obviously so
and as much as there's like location stuff there were elements of this episode did sort of remind me of a play
just in the dialogue interactions and how they all went down that was a really unique type of interview
with a vampire episode it was I thought it was an amazing episode of the last scene too and I really
love their interactions with Daniel.
My tea bag says friendship
is a gift that lasts.
How appropriate is that for
a vampire show about...
Very appropriate, man.
Two friends.
Well, yeah, it seemed like she was
looking for... She's always longing
for, like, more of a community
in some way.
They both, like, everyone here, every vampire
here seems to, like, long for a connection. That's like
the curse of the immortality, huh?
That they don't. No one's like
a cool, isolated, lone wolf,
Empire. And also, she was a teen, she was what, like, a tiny, how old was she when she turned?
14? Yeah, she was younger. Teenager. So I know she's now not that age, but part of her still
stunted there and she's looking for like who else and what else and where do I belong. I felt like
the Disney new actor, I was watching an adult though. I know because we didn't see, I agree. Yeah.
I agree, especially when he was like, go play with the kids. I was like, oh, she, but she's such a
an adult.
Like part of the charm is watching a person who you believe is a child but is playing and
but is playing up in age.
Yeah.
It's not fair to her though because we never got to see her like that.
Yeah.
Yeah, exactly.
But I saw I felt like I was watching an adult the whole time.
And that was part of the thing that was pulling me out if I'm being honest.
But for what she had, she was really good.
And I'm sure like as the season goes on, we'll just slip a little bit more into it.
Louis kept pulling me back in because I just thought this was his best performance yet.
I am slightly...
What'd you say?
Why?
I think it was a couple of scenes.
Number one, that end scene,
but also my favorite scene of his
was when he realizes that she could dream
and he was like, she just wrote that.
And realizing not everything
that somebody writes is fact.
Yeah.
And so him wanting to get those things from Claudia,
I just thought he did such a beautiful job with that.
And I think it is very difficult
when you work for a full season with somebody
and having that connection.
And he was just really like,
This episode asked a lot of him.
It asked him to have a full-blown connection,
lifelong, best friend, sister, familial connection
with somebody that he is working with for the first time ever.
And I just thought he did an absolutely amazing job.
The thing that pulled me out a little bit at times
and that I'm slightly concerned about is,
what are we going to do about Lestat?
Is he not going to be in the show other than like this?
Because I don't really want a season of Lestat like this.
well i mean there's a lot of implications that he's still alive totally but then he's in a different
country well they're going to fran he's in a different continent they just ended up back in france here
or they ended up in france at the end of it and is in louis from france i'llostat from france he's
lestat yes yeah so i imagine they'll they'll encounter him again okay because yeah i'm not a
big fan of like that's like trope that's often used in movies and shows where the character's like
haunting them and it sometimes just feels like an excuse to have the characters like linger around.
Right.
And it's used a lot in movies and shows and most of the time I'm like, yeah, I could do without it.
But it was fine here.
I don't know if we ultimately needed it, but it's always nice having Lestat's presence because
I do like a show.
I prefer a show with Lestat.
Yeah, me too.
And I like...
Especially because we didn't have our Claudia.
So it was like we don't have our Claudia and Lestat's barely there.
True.
But I still thought this episode was great.
Yeah, it was a whole episode about survival.
Every character, even I like the idea of what you write down
is not, might not even be true because so much of when you are a survivor,
a lot of the times the stories, the narratives,
you have to tell yourself to keep on surviving.
And so it can mess with memory.
And it can mess with how you interpret the present moment too.
When you have to kind of go into,
you have to tell yourself a certain story to keep on surviving.
And so I really like that.
Because sometimes it might be hard.
It might be, it would be hard.
If you, okay, so if you look at the lady who offered herself,
the Romanian lady, the old lady, she was pitching a dream to Claudia.
It seemed like pretty obvious she was going to offer herself in that scene because she was pitching a dream.
And then you have Claudia who is dreaming.
So it's like sometimes it's easier to reject the fact that you have dreams.
That way you don't have hope because if you reject hope,
then you don't have to live in the feeling of disappointment or hurt, you know?
Right.
So there's some interesting playbacks here happening.
And I agree.
I like this performance a lot who played guy play Louis.
You know who I don't really care that much about right now?
Armand.
No, I'm not that drawn to him.
Yeah, I need them to give us some more San Francisco,
so I have a reason to give a crap about him.
Yeah, because there's like a big plot reveal about him in the last episode.
Yeah.
And then here, I don't feel like his, he has much of a presence.
He just feels like Louis's boyfriend right now.
I feel about him how Daniel seems to feel about him.
Yeah.
Okay.
Yeah.
I agree with you on that.
I agree with you.
Did you like your World War II setting?
You happy about it?
Listen, I was happy that they announced that France was celebrating after Hitler.
and yeah that's worth
we're celebrating.
I do like World War II shows in general.
I was having a little bit of a hard time
because I saw, you know, we were going from,
she said that they were,
she claimed they were from Kiev
and then they went to Russia
and then we ended up in Romania
or at least there were Russian soldiers
that were still in Romania
or perhaps we were in Russia
and then we went, kept going to Romania
and then we had.
that other woman who then was speaking a different language,
but we don't know exactly what language.
So I was guessing it was Ukrainian but didn't know.
You know me.
My mind starts to wander if you give me a lot of information.
And I'm thinking about like, where are we, when are we?
What's exactly like, obviously this is 1945.
But at like what point are we and what is happening with where we are?
So I did like the setting, but I did leave me my brain wandering briefly.
I kept kind of pulling myself back.
Oh, okay.
You know what I mean at all?
I know what you mean.
You know my brain.
If you give me things to think about, I don't think about them.
Oh, I know.
You know who I bet is giving us things to think about?
The patrons?
I bet.
Let's do it.
Is it a good transition or what?
Then I'm going to have a snack.
And at the end of the episode when Louis is telling Claudia that it's just him and her against the world,
do you think he was truthful trying to convince himself that he's picking
Claudia over LaStat even though he's dead?
Well, we both definitely don't think the stat's dead.
But yet, I think he was both truthful and trying to convince himself.
You know, I think he has real love for Claudia and also I think he has real love for LaStat.
And he's made his choice.
But, of course, when your choice isn't finalized because Lestat is still out there,
he's going to be second-guessing himself and trying to reassure himself.
Well, I mean, he's also rejecting, I think he's rejecting his grief over LaStat.
I mean, the stat, fictional version of LaStat points out his denial.
And again, a lot of this is like that what story do you tell yourself as a survivor?
And I think in this moment he believes it.
I think in that moment he believed it.
Yeah, I would say so.
That's what made it so compelling.
But I like Claudia's look the whole time because Claudia is, you could see in her,
that's part of her performance I really enjoy
because she doesn't say much other than the words okay
but you can tell she's like assessing him
just with this one look of like
does he actually mean these words
and I thought that was what really made
her like her reactions to it and her just going okay
like I'll choose to believe you in that moment
Mm-hmm
Mm-hmm
All right
Take it away Roxanne Stryor
What's up Carebear? Hi G&R
This episode shows Louis
conversing with the ghost of Lestat
Now that you've seen
both seen twilight you'll know in new moon bella also has visions slash chats with edward during his absence
question how do you compare how each franchise use ghost visions to keep an important vampire character present on screen
does enhance the narrative or distract from the main protagonist's story uh you kind of just talked a little bit about
this it's not your favorite device it's not well it's funny in in twilight though because he's like a floating head
So I like it in Twilight.
And it does seem like Edward is there actually communicating something to her.
No, no, it would make sense actually for the plot now that I think about it.
Yeah, because the character is usually some like manifestation of their consciousness or their doubts or fears.
And they're, but they don't, the way they, I think they're characterized whenever they are a manifestation,
they're like a perfectly speaking consciousness.
And it's like they're like, okay, now you're borderline skits.
Because of how you're whatever that version of schizophrenia is where you can actually see someone there who's not and and
Like that I got a mental health condition so I I don't mind it here and I don't feel like we really needed it though
I don't I like list that's the end listat so I'm cool with it exactly but I don't better than not seeing him at all
But I do think that there is a world in which we could have had cut scenes back to what list out was doing
Yeah, I guess I want us to keep thinking that he's dead. Yeah, but it's like so apparent that
that he's not that I don't need that to keep going,
but hopefully they give us that next episode of the episode after.
Well, I also feel like they probably want the audience
to, like, have their list at here, you know?
I like the daily's played up.
And it would make sense after four years,
I think better than Twilight.
I think it makes sense after four years
of being stranded in this war
that he would start to see someone.
Right.
And that he would buy into this narrative.
So, yeah, I mean, it's not like the worst thing in the world.
And you're hearing he has sad blood.
going through. He's eating a bunch of sad
mourning blood, so. And I like
that conceit of how the
emotion affects the blood, because
that makes sense. The emotion affects you on a cellular
level as human beings in real life, scientifically
speaking, so it will affect your blood?
That's a cool concept.
Becca, do you feel as though
Claudia's negative feelings toward Louis are
justified? How would you react to his
decision in her shoes, refusing
to burn the stat and physically stopping her
from doing so?
I do think her feelings
towards him are justified.
But I also think that Louis's choice was justified.
I understand we're both them coming from.
Yeah.
Seems like she just has a lot of...
I mean, why was she seeking out the...
Why do you think she was seeking out these other vampires?
I think she says in the thing, like,
I've never met a good vampire.
And I think she wants to feel good.
And I think she wants company.
And, you know, we've seen her try to have
like to sleep with people
and that's not been successful
and she had this horrible traumatic thing
happened to her with another vampire
I think she just wants to know
she's like part of something bigger
that's not so evil maybe
that's true
that's true
probably a lot of reasons
and she might not even know
why she's seeking it
just like if you thought like
that you were the only
blah blah in the world
you'd or one of two
you'd want to know
like are there more like me
that's true
we all look for community
Susanna Silva
We're both a little time
Yep
How are you feeling so far
With Armand and his now involvement
With the interview
We already have Louis
Who can be unreliable
We're encountering events
Do you think Armand
Will just add more unreliability
Or perhaps a new perspective
Thanks again for continuing to watch
Guys absolutely loving your commentary so far
Thank you Susanna
I don't know about you Greg
But
I don't trust him
Yeah I don't trust our mom
at all. So it's not just the unreliability. It's that like I think he is a little malicious.
I think he's trying to control the narrative. Right. I think he's fully, I don't think he has anything
wrong with his memories. He seems like he's trying to have, he even wants Louis to remember things a
specific way too. And then to recount them a specific way. And I don't think, you know, now that he's
like, oh, I'll have somebody prepare the Claudia pages. Like I kind of don't believe him. I think
he's going to alter them. Yeah. He seems like a weasel.
you know why do we so not trust him because he could mean the entire introduction of him is he's he's
a deceitful and pretending to somebody's not yeah yeah so i i don't trust is there any kind of way that he
um in some vampire things you know you can like control somebody else like is there any world in
which he is somehow tricking louis to being in love with him right now like he's the love of my life
uh compelling him or whatever i don't know if there's like a
Yeah, I don't know if there's a physical vampire power,
but I'm sure there was an emotional manipulator.
I feel like this guy's a big manipulator.
That's every vibe I'm getting about him.
All right.
Because he's not white, I don't trust him.
That's where I'm going on.
Do you trust yourself?
No.
No.
Solid.
Depends if you're talking to you.
Some people think I'm white and others are like he's definitely not white.
That is what it is to be mixed.
Yes.
All righty then.
One last one on the agenda.
Jay Rushden, question, do you like new background of Europe in the show?
Nice for new look theme.
It did look like they up the budget for this.
I don't know whether that was just for the first episode or what,
but I was excited for the new look, yeah.
Apparently the show was a hit for AMC,
so they must have up the budget for it.
And a hit for the real reject.
Oh, yeah, man.
Yeah, it's a hit to the real reject.
That's what I meant.
Yeah.
You know, maybe when we catch up, the people will come in droves.
I doubt it.
I don't want it.
I want this to be the one consistent thing.
Don't say that out loud.
Don't worry.
Don't worry.
I have such a need for attention.
I'm just like Armand.
That fucking asshole, Armand.
Totally.
Never liked him.
Anyway, guys, do you like Armand?
Or do you like us better?
Tell us in the comments of why we're wrong about Armand without spoiling.
Anything about what happened.
is in our mind.
But I'm right there with you, Roxy.
All right, guys.
We'll see you soon.
Bye, everyone.
