Juice (1992) Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis, & Spoiler Review! Greg Alba and Coy Jandreau dive into Juice, the 1992 crime thriller directed by Ernest R. Dickerson. This film captures the raw energy of Harlem through the lives of four teenagers—Q (Omar Epps, Love & Basketball, Higher Learning), Bishop (Tupac Shakur, Poetic Justice, Above the Rim), Raheem (Khalil Kain, Love Jones, Girlfriends), and Steel (Jermaine Hopkins, Lean on Me, Phat Beach)—as they grapple with friendship, loyalty, and the dangerous pursuit of respect, or "juice." The film’s iconic moments include the tense convenience store robbery that sets the plot in motion, Bishop’s chilling descent into violence and power obsession, and Q’s internal conflict between his DJ dreams and his loyalty to his friends. With unforgettable lines like Bishop’s cold declaration, “I am crazy... but you know what else? I don’t give a f**,”* the film delivers a deep exploration of power, control, and identity. Supporting cast members include Cindy Herron (En Vogue, Witch Hunt) as Yolanda, Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, The Avengers) as Trip, and Queen Latifah (Chicago, Living Single) as Ruffhouse M.C. Juice remains a cornerstone in hip-hop cinema, blending gritty storytelling with a cultural backdrop that highlights the pressures of inner-city life. Tupac Shakur’s breakout performance in the film only cemented his legacy, both as an actor and as a voice of his generation. To celebrate Tupac's influence, here are some of his most iconic songs: “California Love,” “Changes,” “Hit ‘Em Up,” “Dear Mama,” “Hail Mary,” “Keep Ya Head Up,” “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted,” “Ambitionz Az a Ridah,” “Me Against the World,” and “I Ain’t Mad at Cha.” Follow Coy Jandreau:  Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@coyjandreau?l... Starting point is 00:01:22 Sierra, let's get moving. Thank you to Hewle and prize picks for sponsoring this video. More on them in just a bit. Citizens of the Reject Nation, we are continuing our journey heading towards. Don't be a menace in South Central while drinking juice in the hood. This being the juice. A film I am very, very excited to watch. How are you this big, Greg? I'm good, man. I'm good. I'm good. Moments before I was talking McCoy about the way this has been going. We've already shot up. poetic justice by this point and we just are releasing the movies and i've been loving the response i've been loving the feedback it's been really like overwhelmed like coy and i were kind of nervous about boys in the hood first i was like it's fine coy and then i was like maybe and then miss the side i was like i don't like because it's it's a very important subject matter and it's very heavy subject matter
Starting point is 00:02:14 which makes talking about it like the stakes are high because it's not fluffy it's not like watching fiction yeah and we're also being very vulnerable about our person lives as well and point of views that we may have learned early on and it's and it has bled into like my life in way more ways and you guys have any idea about when it comes to the subject of race and such and it is so it's been a unique experience and i was telling coy beforehand like i hate when i get caught up in the views of things as i was like yeah you know they're not like doing that great view count wise i still want to do them because i'm loving the experience and last thing I want to do is let view count affect experience because I've definitely let that happen
Starting point is 00:02:57 before and I don't want to be that guy anymore so I'm just admitting that right now it's like this is something I was like processing before we shot like well it's juice it's probably going to be the one on the lower reforming view count but I was like it's not about always about views sometimes because I feel like don't be a mess will be big sure and we need that true experience and I'd rather be a part of the journey the right and like those who watch. I care about just those who watch, whether it be 10,000 to 20,000. I'm just happy you're here. So thank you and encouraging Koi and I to just enjoy the experience and continue being honest. That really means a lot. Thank you. These comments have been the antithesis of most
Starting point is 00:03:36 of my internet journey. So they've actually been what I've been reading when I've been dealing with a lot of animosity and vitriol on the internet. So I've really enjoyed not only trying something new in opening up a bit more than usual, also trying, you know, to be in a different headspace. through the subject matter and be open all of that is a different challenge than you know yelling hey it's spider-man so i really i've enjoyed this journey and i and i love to support you guys have shown and this is the first one we're watching since we've started releasing them since the first time we've talked about uh the actual like you know the reception yeah the community element like now it's a we are now the auriboris of seeing you uh have this experience with us so thank you very much reject nation
Starting point is 00:04:16 we're very excited this is the one i've been waiting for uh i will fully admit i have seen this when i was like nine and I was so young that I was just like yeah Tupac in a movie and I remember it's very dark very violent and when you're nine anything dark and violence good I hope it's actually as good a movie as I assume it will be because of the legend and the reputation it has
Starting point is 00:04:34 but all I remember is like the kid being like oh edge because I clearly wouldn't I shouldn't have watched it that young so that's all I really had to it but I think Tupac is such an incredible actor you had a great experience with poetic justice seeing him act and I think the first role you've seen him in
Starting point is 00:04:50 absolutely yeah so and you've boy was saying we should put this on the list and I was like I just think we need to do three now we might be doing five uh and this would be four we've just prolonged the journey we want to get the true
Starting point is 00:05:03 John Singleton Wayne's brothers cinematic universe experience and Hughes brothers and Hughes brothers yes there's I know there's more than John Singleton and all these movie directing but yeah we gotta get into it that's what's juice I gotta go robot yeah let's dive in juice and three
Starting point is 00:05:18 like buttons oh yeah YouTube things right i gave all the love to the community if you guys could continue that please leave a comment below those the conversations i've really been enjoying seeing and having uh that is my sanity in not dealing with the superhero side of the internet and also please leave a like in this video because that helps it grow in whatever way it can it costs nothing to press a like and leave a comment please do so also if you haven't subscribed to this page hit that subscription bell and if you want to see this full experience in its entirety like you're watching it with it on the couch head on over to Patreon. Those super sexy patrons get
Starting point is 00:05:47 full watchalongs when they queue up with their own copy. They also get exclusive watchongs that Greg and John do exclusively over there. Thank you very much. Also check out our socials and all that good stuff. Let's dive into juice. And three, two, juice. I also love
Starting point is 00:06:07 how it really sells you. That's my favorite kind of horror in a lot of ways where especially because we didn't know. I didn't know what the hell is walking into it all where the first half feels like a totally different movie and we've seen you know some slice of life yeah hanging out in the hood kind of films so it could just be like so i guess it's another one of those movies that we're watching and then once it takes that turn at the robbery you're like oh shit this is a freaking horror movie oh my god what's crazy is that poetic justice was that and then it turned into like a road trip movie we weren't expecting and then
Starting point is 00:06:44 This was that and then it turned into a horror movie we weren't expecting. So we've had two movies that I think it's really interesting that they take the opening to establish a world and then they build out a genre from a second and third act. Like twice now. Two two pub movies in particular have gone like whoop and what a movie this was. It's a bit exploitation-y in that execution, which I enjoy because it is a horror. It is just a horror movie like in the last half. But it doesn't exactly drop some of the more deep. detailed commentary one thing I that dawned on me like really close towards the end of the film
Starting point is 00:07:18 it is the a lot of times in the movies especially in the first two that we watched it's like a lot of the community feels like scary and like walking the streets in the neighborhoods and stuff and this movie's like no it's really just like one dude you got to work yeah this guy's the problem and he's going to make you afraid of everyone because you don't know which member of the crew's the problem like you're aware of the gangs and stuff you know rademe and then the Puerto rican side and everything so i'd like me York is Puerto Ricans, Puerto Ricans out here, Mexicans, California, Puerto Ricans, New York, Cubans.
Starting point is 00:07:51 We get actual Irish in Florida. Is it Cubans in Florida? Yeah, it's Cuba's right there. Where's the Columbians? Also Florida. All right. And in Columbia. That's our next one.
Starting point is 00:08:03 Scarface. Anyway, yeah, the, the, the, Tupac is in the first time. He's so good. Toob, I'm like, man, this guy's just like angry. He's just angry all the time. I thought I was a little bit of worried I'm going to get annoyed with Tupac because he was I loved him in poetic justice he was my favorite part undoubtedly and this one I'm hey it's like he's doing the yelling he's doing the anger like yeah I get it you know like that's acting
Starting point is 00:08:30 but then when the switch happened this guy's terrifying human him okay he's like he killed the guy of the show it was that's the thing when he killed the guy at the shop you're like what the hell man yeah but it could still just be up one of them hood stories But then when he shoots his friend, he shoots his friend, you're like, oh my God, this is the scariest situation you could be totally be a part of right now. And you're in a situation where you can't trust anybody. No one's going to believe you. You're trapped. And it's even worse because of like the time and place they're in.
Starting point is 00:09:01 Yeah. And that was such a great way to make you feel claustrophobic. I love the movie having like music undercurrents. Like we talk about music video style directing. So there was like allowed to be a little extra sound design. Like I think if the movie was about music. then it would have been like a hallmark movie when there was as much sound design as there was. But since the first act established so much music as an undertone, by the time it got to the end,
Starting point is 00:09:22 there's like, yeah, you don't mind. Like, it doesn't feel extra. And the music was a really emblematic of the culture that, uh, that they embody there, especially with like specifically the DJing side of it. Yeah. And I thought really throwing you into the, to Omar Epps's POV before you're sunken in to Bishop's POV. And the anxiety shots? Yeah. Oh, like before like the contrast. Like to have that pivot point of this crazy ass DJ match that I was so into. I was like, I guess this is what the movie's about. Him being
Starting point is 00:09:58 in detail. Like that's what I really thought we were watching then. And it's always going to have to choose which path he goes down. Yeah. Separate from his friends. I thought the same for like 10 minutes. I was like interesting. Yeah. Then they go to do the robbery and it's like such a shift that he shows back up with the DJ side. It's like he's never going to have his dreams because at the end of the day he still chose to be a part of that robbery. So there's still consequences for Q because he still did go through with something that he was being told in his heart, I should not be going through with this. And that beautiful scene with his brother where he gave me like that that one thing he got out of it and him trying to have his brother safe and listen to him like passing it on trying to
Starting point is 00:10:33 stop his little brother. Like I, man, this is the one we almost didn't watch. We almost didn't watch. I'm so glad we did. It's the biggest surprised one to me for sure because the literally the first. 45 minutes. I started thinking, okay, this is about like what we've seen before. Yeah. And then horror movie. Yeah. And then it's, and then I started realizing, oh, this is actually funnier than the other ones. It's like it's actually funny. It's got a joy in its madness,
Starting point is 00:11:01 I think. I mean, it's a cautionary tale. It's not like a fun movie, but there's fun in it. Yeah. I think there's a spirit in it. Reject Nation put on some weight over the holidays. So in the past month. I've been on a pretty strict macro counting diet. I gotta say, I'm feeling better than ever. At the same time, you gotta be real about something. Sticking to macros means early having to factor out a lot when you're trying to pick meals. And when life gets busy, that's when there's a chance to get to all fall apart. That's why when I don't have something to cook, but I still need something that fits within my diet. I go for this bad boy and I've seen me drinking on camera before. He'll! So happy, just got a fresh order. I have definitely
Starting point is 00:11:38 properly ordered more personally for this household than they've ever paid me. I don't know if that's true, but I feel confident in that fear. And Hewles' black condition rated drink is a complete meal and a bottle. Packed with 35 grams of protein, 27 essential vitamins and minerals. You're not just filling up, you're fueling up. And here's why I love it. A, it's tasty. I've tried a lot of plant-based ones, especially.
Starting point is 00:12:04 And this one's actually great. All my vegan friends and I, we get together and we talk about how great Hew is. It's efficient. Obviously, there's no cooking. There's no prep. You just grab it, drink it, and you're good to go. Low sugar, high protein, great macros. Whether you're tracking your intake or just want to balance meal. This one generally checks every box. My guy, I haven't even read that one yet. Slow release carbs? It just keeps getting better. It's a benefit again when he's ready to go drinks, right? It takes all the guess workout out of having to eat well. And best part is, I think it's affordable, too.
Starting point is 00:12:28 Each bottle is a meal that costs less than five bucks. Making it a no-brainer if you're looking for a quick, nutritious option. So if you want to give it a try, for great way to support the channel, but more importantly, support your body. You can go to Hewell.com, use my code rejects, and get 15% off your first order plus a free gift. What's the gift? You'll find out it's a gift. Start feeling your body, even on the go. Trust me, you'll love it. Reject Nation, fun fact, fantasy football is now a part of my life.
Starting point is 00:12:54 Why? Because my wife and her friends are obsessed with it. So I'm constantly hearing about things I've never heard about before. Like who's getting benched, who's a sleeper pick, and why someone's entire weekend was ruined over a bad play. And at this point, I figured might as well support my wife the extra mom. and get in there myself. And that's why I want to think prize picks. And my wife will tell you I'm not the sharpest tool in the show
Starting point is 00:13:13 when it comes to stuff like this, but price fix is the easiest way to play daily fantasy sports. No complicated drafts, no long-term commitments. You just pick two to six players, decide if they'll get more or less, then there's stat projections, like passing yards, points, or rebound, sports terms. And if you get it right, you win.
Starting point is 00:13:33 It's that easy. And it's quick. You can make your picks in under a minute, way less stressful than managing a full fantasy. team and you don't need to be a hardcore sports fan either believe me you don't whether you casually follow games or go full deep dive mode it's fun either way and the flex play flex play means you can still win even if you miss one pick so it's not all or nothing and here's the best part prize picks is available in most states including this lovely state california texas georgia so it's so easy to jump in so it'll be amazing thing for yourself and to support the channel as well you could download the prize picks app today use code rejects and get 50 instantly when you play just five dollars you don't even have to win to get the bonus prize picks people run your game yes oh yeah yeah no there's a spirit too like it feels like life like
Starting point is 00:14:21 the actors again are just so damn good omar ups is incredible in this i it i can't i can't even quantify the loss that is like losing tupac like losing him musically is obviously i think the biggest loss to hip-hop but like even as an actor he could have if he wanted to stop doing music at any point he could have been an amazing actor because just those two roles like poetic justice what a charming rom-com guy and then this we watched him like you know a weeks apart this is like actually terrifying the dude died at 27 like this is this is him like 25 and under and he's this good yeah because i think this is before he went to prison the second time like he's a kid the quote i'm gonna do this really quick because you got to be home by 830 uh i got to be 7 30 30 6 30 sorry let me just just go and count
Starting point is 00:15:07 I got to type in your address and let's just top it in because we were clearing it's so close you just make sure 17 minutes oh my god you got five more minutes five minutes a coin time all right so five minutes what else did you want to mention about it so i really like chupac we talked about with poetic justice but i really love that the strength of his voice is used by the director here in a really different way i feel like there were moments in poetic justice where like the charm of tupac obviously got to be used but there's some actors that like command by their voice right like there's there's actors like sam uh elliot or uh Tommy Lee Jones James Earl Jones like there's
Starting point is 00:15:49 actors that have that power I really love that they let Tupac's like like powerful voice be such a commanding thing that made him so scary here and like he played the boogeyman like they let him appear out of shadow but with that powerful voice like I and I've heard some of those lines like yeah I am crazy and I don't give a wait. is like sampled in lots of songs and like it's iconic but his voice and the power of his presence is so well used here all right well damn normally we talk for like 30 minutes but we don't have that time we started late our last video and then talked eight years about it so or omar fs as as uh it would seem and learn how to spend it as a DJ before production began a lot
Starting point is 00:16:29 of what he does in the movies that's all that's what I mean I've never you were saying that you've seen some DJ movies I had never seen any DJ films and so I was into a DJ movie. Yeah, man. And that's what I think you, you feel the loss that he starts to experience. So while like horror movie cliches are kind of funny in this movie, Tupac is so intimidating that it's simultaneously when he appears, it's funny. But you're also like, holy shit. Oh, that he's scary. He can just kill you at any moment. He's a true sociopath. And I love the flippoor of showing you at the beginning. His life looks so, he looks like he has the nicest life out of the mall. Yeah. But you see this distraught, empty father. We have
Starting point is 00:17:06 to take care of yeah we talked about how it opened everybody else was like uh and he's like happy to get up and get going and then the world okay here we go here we go all right uh omar epps was a senior in high school when he was cast as cue wow that's interesting what year was this uh 1980 1990 92 got it okay um the dj announcement at the end of the movie during the end credits came about during test street the honest want to know what happened to queue after the final confrontation with bishop on the roof oh didn't pick up on that music playing i didn't pick up in that either cue did not i'm glad we're reading
Starting point is 00:17:40 this cue did not go to jail after everything that happened had his mixtape played oh so he does still one in the one oh i wish it also missed a line it auto played a thing like we didn't even let us find out it auto played the next movie i think it might have been what the credit sound were and i think we just missed it oh thank god
Starting point is 00:17:56 we read this holy shit yeah um Tupac actually did start to burst into tears to the emotion of the scene when he kills Rahim, which impressed and earned the respect of Omar Epson's Remain Huggy Hopkins. So he was proven himself as an actor. Yeah, the music guy on set with actors. Uh, okay. So the original
Starting point is 00:18:14 ending, the major difference was just, as Bishop was about to climb up, here's police sirens coming in and he says, I'm not going to jail. And Q's like, come on, man, just get up. And so the studio forced, the studio forced him to change the ending. And if he didn't change it, the studio, not give him nor the movie the support he was expecting. Wow. Oh, so it wasn't going to be
Starting point is 00:18:32 the original ending. Oh, that's crazy. Donald Faison who we spotted earlier in the movie. He apparently auditioned to be Bishop, but didn't make us they gave him that other role. Oh, I see. Which is... Tupac was 19.
Starting point is 00:18:47 Dude! So young. Wow. And Omar Emson, you're really 17. Tupac was 19. That's what I'm saying. Like, he's this good at 19. Like, the loss of losing Tupac. And it looks like Tupac got, like, Mel Gibson
Starting point is 00:19:02 to go to the top one. top one yeah no there we go according to jermaine two park often nope that went to darrell mitchel
Starting point is 00:19:09 don't fayzon and anthony trich chris and money b were among the people who audition with their old bishop two pox choucordinated accompanied money b
Starting point is 00:19:14 to the audition asked to read she coordinated the role when he threw a chair during his audition to get a cameos member of the gang uh like meldibson
Starting point is 00:19:21 famously drove his friend to the mad max audition and he was beat up and like he literally they cast him as one of the mutant freaks and then he showed up on set and he was handsome
Starting point is 00:19:30 so he got to be max yeah yeah I've heard that drove someone and he got cast yeah crazy and then we did just pick up on this the top of the world top of the world the james canning line from the night yeah movie is foreshadowing his downfall damn i really thought that was a blast i thought that was a really fun movie we watched that yeah that was really really fun because especially start seeing repair stuff i'm not sure
Starting point is 00:19:51 what more i can contribute to the conversation but like it's such a different experience like this movie from the other ones i think there's going to be a lot in because there were i think some of the tension when we laughed out of tension is what that's going to be in don't be a menace you don't I mean like of any of the movies to use spoof it's gonna be like
Starting point is 00:20:08 hip popping out of the shadow each one of the movies have had like the one character who is like the scariest one the one who's the most violent
Starting point is 00:20:15 the one to feel the most threatened by they've all had that character yeah and this one they're like no let's actually
Starting point is 00:20:20 make him an antagonist a scary guy but the conflict is so because you they really drive home the fact they are brothers
Starting point is 00:20:27 and friends so it makes it 10 times more terrifying when it's like what happens when my friend turns into this and how do I handle it? What if the call's coming from inside the house? The idea to not rat and snitch, like,
Starting point is 00:20:38 beyond getting yourself caught and thrown in jail for being part of the robbery, there's also that extra layer of conflict that is my friend. I loved it. The other movies are you can't go to the cops because the cops won't be on your side. This is you can't go to the cops and they won't be on your side and it's your friend that did it. It added that layer
Starting point is 00:20:55 of, now what you said there might be four movies we do. What's the other one? South Central. Higher learning? I think is the other one I've seen mentioned a lot. Apparently there's a movie called South I don't know. I don't know. You know, guys, it's like, people don't like hearing this, but it is an investment to put these together.
Starting point is 00:21:09 So as long as we're breaking even on it, what it costs to put these together. So like, so as long as it breaks even, usually that just means a watch time. Just keep watching. And we're at a lot of times that helps compensate for things. So, yeah, that's literally where I'm out like. All right. Maybe we'll do. Broke even on don't be a menace.
Starting point is 00:21:29 Let's see what's next. I'm not as a society. You know, we'll see how the... Higher learning I've never seen. And I apparently... And honestly, if we're not breaking it and we're probably just still going to continue doing it's fun.
Starting point is 00:21:39 It's just a good experience and who knows, they'll grow over time. Yeah. It doesn't matter. Don, not concerned about the monetization too much on this. I care for it to be monetized. I'm not concerned about how well it pops off. Profitization. Yes.
Starting point is 00:21:51 Let us know in the comment below. Profits off the hood. Wow. Yeah. Holy shit. Profits off of the experience of these black artists. People have gone through so much. Can we make money?
Starting point is 00:22:02 Can we make our YouTube video reactions profitable? I think there was a whole war about this, Greg. Yes, there was. You gotta get out of here, man. Let us know in the comments below what movies we should watch in this same vein, especially leading to Don't Be a Minutes in South Central or drinking orange juice in the hood. This was juice.
Starting point is 00:22:17 We had a great time with it. Go listen to some Tupac. There was so many sounds that reminded me of Tupac now and strictly for my, which are two of my favorite albums, which are early Tupac, two of his first albums. Please, please, please, please leave a comment below. Let us know what you thought of this experience. please like this video so we can grow it and if you're not already a subscriber please do so
Starting point is 00:22:32 check out the patreon for full length watchalongs and uh please make sure to watch the rest in the series because we're having fun doing it we want to do more stuff like absolutely we'll see you soon rejectation bye
