Starting point is 00:01:27 WhatsApp, message privately with everyone. Are you ready for the jungle Andrew? Yes, we should play that song right now. Welcome to the jungle. It's all fun of game. I don't even know the lyrics I suck. That's okay. That's okay.
Starting point is 00:01:44 I remember the Welcome to the jungle part. That's the important part. That's right. Let's get jungleized. I was like, you have to put that, you have to put that song in when you call the movie that. Oh boy, that was fun That was a great film Oh, Dwayne Johnson and his ex-wife
Starting point is 00:02:05 Where the producers, cool Interesting, interesting Cool You guys, first of all Before we get into the review, I want to say two things One, go to rejagnationshop.com You can get teas like these Also, go support the cult of she-jacks
Starting point is 00:02:20 Our wonderful ladies over here Tara and Roxy have their own line Go check those out. They got so many different colors, cool crew necks you don't want to miss your chance to get one because they're dope. Also, listen to this on Apple with Spotify where we can get into
Starting point is 00:02:36 all of the juicy details. Andrew. What do you think of the movie? Well, I'm a huge fan of the first one as you probably saw in their first reaction. But this was great. I mean, I like again that they changed it up because I feel like if they would have just done
Starting point is 00:02:53 the board game again, I would have been into it either way, but I feel like, you know, you avoided repetition. and I thought this was a very oh Henry Jackman such a good composer he did sorry to get off topic but Henry Jackman he did Winter Soldier and he did Civil War and he did I believe Reckett Ralph
Starting point is 00:03:10 and I think he also did the Kingsman films such a good composer. That's good. Anyways I like that they didn't rely on repetitiveness while also we got some fun little references to like Alan Parrish being in the jungle and I think this was an interesting way to explore you know
Starting point is 00:03:25 that was something I was thinking in the back of my mind too being such a big fan of the first film like oh it was Missy Pyle the gym teacher being such a big fan of the first film I always wondered
Starting point is 00:03:40 like I would have loved to explore seeing uh because we talked about when we were reacting to it like I really would have loved to have seen like uh you know the kid from the eight the two kids from the 1800s playing the game but also too we didn't talk about in our reaction but always in the many times I've seen the first film
Starting point is 00:03:56 or the few times I've seen it like I always wondered like what it was like for Alan in the jungle and this film really like I know it was different avatars and all that but it still said Alan Parrish was here and obviously this film literally starts right where the last film uh ended up right or you know finished off rather but um I just think it was an interesting way to you know go from where the last film uh you know ended ended off but also explored in a different way while also still sticking with some familiar stuff and being its own thing so I appreciate appreciate that and I really like these characters like you know they they all had qualities that we can relate to especially being in high school really you know and I think all the actors did a great job from the rock Karen Gillian Kevin Hart Jack Black that's such a dynamic chemistry and they really did a good job making you feel like these characters we had just met feeling like they were the those you know these high school kids playing these characters so I think they did such a fantastic job I got a lot more to say I want to hear some your initial thoughts for we
Starting point is 00:04:57 get more into it so it's interesting watching this movie after watching the first one because tonally tonally they're so different uh i know i said i've seen this one before but i genuinely did not remember large majority of this movie i like i knew that they got second to a game and i think i remembered which people were which but that's pretty much about it um yeah didn't remember any of like the romantic connections or you know the jack black was um his arc or her art through the story. Right. But yeah,
Starting point is 00:05:29 I will say that this was a lot of fun. This was an enjoyable movie. I really liked the fact that we got to see these characters, kind of as Andrew said, be portrayed by older actors in their avatars. And really getting to see those dynamics kind of play out through this world of Jamongi. And, yeah,
Starting point is 00:05:48 watching their relationships grow over the course of the story. You know, this movie was very action-adventure, like the epitome of an action-adventure story. and it really captured that sense of what a video game is like while being within a film format. Yeah. And yeah, I think it really capitalized on that very well. Dwayne de Wach Johnson was great.
Starting point is 00:06:12 Kevin Hart was great. I think they all shined in the ways that they shine as performers and did it in a unique way while bouncing off of each other in a way that only elevated the story because all of these people are A-LIS and stars in their own right, which is great I will say stuff that could have improved for me
Starting point is 00:06:32 was probably though I think the villain was great Pelt Bobby Carnival Yeah I thought his performance was great I thought the villain was a little underwritten little
Starting point is 00:06:45 I agree with you Because yeah they make a point of showing scenes Whereas the first movie Only shows him within the context of The characters we're in They show make points of showing him in other scenes that don't involve our immediate characters as if he's another character in the movie rather than an obstacle, but then he ends up just being another
Starting point is 00:07:06 obstacle, sort of like more development on that side. Yeah, I think that the way that this movie explores growth between both their dynamics and individuals, I think that's great, you know, glowing our main character of, what's his name, the actor, are they right there? Dwayne Johnson, his younger self allowing him to grow confidence. Spencer. Spencer, thank you. Bethany being comfortable within her own skin
Starting point is 00:07:35 and learning how to not be so attached to her phone and be from the world. Fridge learning to, you know, accept and embrace Spencer and Martha gaining confidence. I thought all that stuff was great. Yeah. And also, too, with Nick Jonas's character,
Starting point is 00:07:51 I thought that was, and also, too, when we talk about Bethany, too, like she was willing, like, to be selfless in that moment and save, you know, Alex, Alex, was that his name? Colin Hanks, his character, Nick Jonas. I thought that was a very selfless move. And again, the growth because she was very, very selfish in the beginning, you know, all, self-centered, all about herself. So, like, to see her growth, just all their growths in general, and to see the confidence as well. I mean, if I had the rocks arms, I'd gain a lot of confidence as well in Spencer, so I could understand that.
Starting point is 00:08:22 But, no, it was fun. again, I think you make a great point. Like, yeah, this is a fun family adventure. Also, albeit it can be scary at times too. I mean, you got to have a foul language. Yeah, and also you could see, I'm sorry, go ahead. It feels tonally like a family film, but it has mature content in it and mature jokes. There's like a weird, like, balancing line that it does.
Starting point is 00:08:44 Well, I mean, there were some scary things in the first film. I mean, you got a crocodile trying to, you know, eat them and then another, and a lion and all these other horrific things coming. out of the game as well. But yeah, no, no, no, for sure, obviously with Jack Black doing the whole, you know, looking down and all that other funny stuff, I agree with that. And also, too, you got a hippopotamus legit, like just eating him alive like that. I mean, there were some haunting images for children in this film, for sure. But I still think it towed that line in balancing that. But I really appreciate, like you said, the character dynamic and the emotional stuff we got. You know what I mean? It was really, uh, I mean, I wouldn't
Starting point is 00:09:23 like super deep but I mean it was it was light but it was just enough but yeah but yeah it was enough where I appreciated and I'm glad they gave us the effort like they could have just said hey family fun adventure and we're just going to stick with that you know what I mean you're going to get the comedy you're going to get the action you're going to get the adventure I would have been happy with that but I'm glad we still got the emotional stuff we got the character dynamics and all that and we got the arcs for all these characters and I appreciated that like those moments like even just the simple stuff with Bethany teaching Martha like you know how to gain confidence. And when she taught her how to flirt, I thought that was hysterical. But again,
Starting point is 00:09:58 it was just good character building moments like that. Also, too, when they had Colin Hanks or Nick Jonas's character, when he only had one life left, and he was just afraid to do it there. And they were helping, like, when they were building each other up, I think that's what a group of friends does. And yeah, the whole thing was about, like, teamwork, making the dream work and all that. But I think, like, this is what friends are supposed to do. That's supposed to build you up. And I think there was a positive message and all that. I mean, because that's what we do here at Reject Nation. We build each other up. You know what I mean? So I appreciate that messaging throughout the film. Having said all that, there were a lot of long shot tracking shots
Starting point is 00:10:32 to cool transitions that I really appreciated too with the cinematography. Solid-ass writing, really good direction from Jake Kazan. I think the only other film of his I've seen, as mentioned earlier. I saw it a long time ago, so I don't remember. Was with, as I mentioned, Colin Hanks, and Jack Black, Orange County. I don't know if you saw that film so long ago, so I don't really I've seen the Osage Orange County, but not Orange County. I didn't know that was a movie. Wait, what did you say you saw? Osage Orange County.
Starting point is 00:10:57 Oh, I've not seen that. Jason Bateman. Oh, no, I have not seen that. But again, I just love the ideas that this film explored. And again, I thought it was really interesting, too, because, again, I only had seen the trailers when the film had come out. So I did remember it was a video game and not a board game. And I was wondering, how are we going to, how does the game change that up?
Starting point is 00:11:19 And then when, you know, we got the first shot from the last film with On the Beach, I'm like, okay, we're back to the board game. So in my mind, I was thinking, how is it going to change it up to the video game? When I saw how they did it was like, okay, that was pretty clever and showing like it's, again, kind of the game goes off your manifestation, which makes sense because, again, when they showed Van Pelt, and then we're talking about when we saw with Allen's father, because he's the one who rolled the dice and Van Pelt came out, it makes sense now why it looks like, you know, Alan's the father. and it was played by the actor who plays Jonathan Hyde played by Allen's father so the game kind of goes off like because the game knew that there's no manifestation for this version of him
Starting point is 00:11:57 no no no no no no but what I'm saying that's why Van Pelt is like now the default version because there's no Alan Parrish playing but the point I was making is like when Colin Hanks back in 1996 when he's playing the game the game he wasn't going to play the game I hate board games and knew like oh he only likes to play video games perfect we'll make it
Starting point is 00:12:15 in a way that he's going to play me So I love like that magic evolving. And it also made sense to because there was a line that I said in the reaction of the first film. I was kind of making it like just to be joky. But I was kind of being serious too. But now it makes sense like when that drum noise happens, I think it only makes that drum noise for only for the people it wants it to hear that noise. Of course, yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:35 Yeah. And everyone's probably like, are you dumb, of course. But I figured everyone could probably hear it. I didn't think it was only making that noise for just certain people. No, I think they said the mom couldn't hear or the auntie couldn't hear it in the first movie. Oh, okay. I just thought she was just oblivious and wasn't hearing it. But, yeah, that makes sense.
Starting point is 00:12:52 I've seen that a few times now. You think I would have picked up on that. But, yeah, that makes total sense. I want to see Jumanji origins. I want to see where the, how those kids in the 1800s got that game. Let's take it back to the OG. Well, now we got a story to write you and I, right? That's right, baby.
Starting point is 00:13:08 I mean, that would be a fun to explore. But obviously, you know, I'm going to get into the trivia in a second. Obviously, we're going to be doing the next. level very soon. I really hope you that you and I can convince John and Greg to let us do Zathura as well. Let us know you want to see Zethora. I really want to do
Starting point is 00:13:27 Zethora. Zithara. Zithora. Okay. Zithora. However you pronounce it. I really want to do that one. Again, I saw it so damn long ago. I don't even remember. I just remember it takes place in space. That's all I remember. But I really want to get into that because it's like the unofficial sequel that's, I don't
Starting point is 00:13:43 know if there's actual continuity, but I mean, it's the same damn kind of thing. Just called a different game. Yeah. So, but I really would like to do that. So we're going to try and convince John and Greg to do that. Hopefully these videos do well and you guys are enjoying these reactions that we can do that one.
Starting point is 00:13:57 Because, again, I don't remember squat from that film as well. Nope. Before we get into the trivia, do you have anything else you want to say? Or should I get right on that? I would have liked to have seen more of the team dynamic as a whole. I think that was the crux of what they wanted the movie to be,
Starting point is 00:14:15 the balance between team dynamic. and then personal development, I would have liked Bethany to have somewhat of a stronger relationship with Fridge and Alex. That's his name, right? No, not Alex. No, because, yeah, Bethany's focus was Alex and Martha.
Starting point is 00:14:31 But Spencer and Fridge, I would have like Bethany to have more of a connection to them as well. But they didn't really focus on that angle, but I guess you don't have so much time to do it. Yeah, I mean, I hear what you're saying, but yeah, I was going to say maybe in the sequel, they're going to be able to do that
Starting point is 00:14:44 because, I mean, there's only so much time And also, too, the villain, Van Pelt was kind of, like you said, a little bit underwritten. Although, like, the villains, or Van Pelt in the first film wasn't really, you know, was kind of underwritten. He wasn't a character. He was an obstacle. Yeah, exactly. But, I mean, I would have liked the character to be a little more, you know, a little more developed and all. But, I mean, it is what it is.
Starting point is 00:15:07 But I hear what you're saying. I'm not saying I disagree. But, again, maybe in the next film, maybe they'll get to that. We shall see. fun though yeah but i still really enjoyed this again i i just really appreciated that i think a good sequel you don't want to repeat and do the same thing i think that's the safe thing i appreciate being ambitious and trying something new i think those are what the best sequels do like batman begins a dark night two great films totally different terminator one terminator two great films totally
Starting point is 00:15:36 different right um uh star new hope empire strikes back two great films totally different alien aliens Two great films, totally different. So, ones I've not seen. Any of those? The alien movies, no. Oh, okay. I thought you were talking about all the ones I just named. I was like, holy crap, we got a lot of reactions for you to do.
Starting point is 00:15:57 Damn. Most of those I've seen. Okay. Okay. Let's see. Here we go. Trivia. The statues in the jungle set are modeled after the board game pieces in the original
Starting point is 00:16:10 Gemini. We knew that. That makes sense. Yeah. If Dwayne Johnson could play any other role in the film, he'd play Jack Black's character, Bethany, Johnson said, and I quote, I know how much fun Jack had every day playing a 16-year-old self-obsessed girl.
Starting point is 00:16:25 That's funny. Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart are known for their intensive workout routines, but it was Karen Gillian, whose character is an expert in various martial arts and dance fighting, who did the most extensive work with the stunt team to learn the fight choreography for her scenes, and it showed, because I was extremely impressed
Starting point is 00:16:44 with the hand-to-hand combat in this film. I would have liked to have seen like a double take between those two of them, like fighting side-by-side? Her and the Rock? Her in the Rock, yeah. They're both excelled in fighting because the other two were the more intellectual ones
Starting point is 00:16:56 and they were the more muscle. From what I'm just like, again, we just watched it, but from when I'm remembering there was only like one scene where he just like kind of helped her a little bit or I don't know, I guess you're right. It wasn't really like tag team.
Starting point is 00:17:09 Yeah, like really tag team hand-to-hand the two of them like just going attic kind of thing right no i feel you jack black had a lot of fun as bethany teaching karen gillian's character to flirt i was teaching her how to flirt and how to work it runaway stuff i was like it was like a living organism kind of scene i seem so much um where some of it was on the page but a lot of it was just happening in real life yeah i'm sure a lot was improv jack black jokes that he was not acting in the scenes when his character was infatuated with dwayne johnson's character he was in fact actually infatuated
Starting point is 00:17:44 and the cameras just kept on rolling was he infatuated of Dwayne Johnson's career I thought he was doing the smolder oh right right right right right right because I was going to say I thought he was infatuated with Alex with Nick Jonas but you're right with the smolder that's correct
Starting point is 00:17:57 Tom Holland was originally cast as seaplane I could totally see him playing that role but had to drop out of the film due to scheduling conflicts with Spider-Man Homecoming so Nick Jonas was cast as play I thought Nick Jonas did a great job That was great.
Starting point is 00:18:12 Yeah. It was a lot of fun. He did. Awesome. Yeah. Like he, I mean, coming into the film kind of late there, like with the, because I thought the group had a nice chemistry flowing between the four of them. I thought he fit right in organically, nicely.
Starting point is 00:18:24 Agreed. Yeah. But I totally could have seen Tom Holland as well playing that role. I'll do a few more. Mouse Finbar wears a little badge with the picture of a slice of cake and a line going across it. I did not notice that. A nod to the fact that the character's weakness is cake. The badge can't.
Starting point is 00:18:42 be seen on the upper left side of his vest. I did notice his name, but I did not notice the cake with a line going through it. Did you? No, I didn't notice that either. Yeah, next time I watch it on. Oh, here you go. You get props, sir, and I'm sure most people can go, well, who else did she look like Andrew? But you still get props for this. Ruby Roundhouse's outfit, Karen Gillian's character, was influenced by that of Laura Croft, the protagonist of the Tomb Raider video. games and movies. Martha comments on how impractical the outfit is to wear in the jungle, which is literally what you said right when she said how impractical.
Starting point is 00:19:20 That's right. Good job. Very nice. Thank you. Duane Johnson pitched the name Smolder to Jake Kazden via text. What if his name was Smolder, but he had his unique ability to just smolder? And he's like, I love it. That's awesome.
Starting point is 00:19:37 That's so fun. All right, we'll do. I think it's best not to do spoilers. just in case it gives us next level spoiler. So let's just be, let's just do two more. In researching the character of Bethany, Jack Black went to Madison Isman,
Starting point is 00:19:52 asking her about her favorite music and TV shows. He watched and listened and got that into his headspace for the role. That's fun. I mean, again, I was legit. Every time he spoke, I felt that it was the 16 or 17-year-old version of that girl. Yeah, totally. All right.
Starting point is 00:20:08 Let me do one more. All right, last one. let's see do do do okay Duwayne Johnson found his character of Spencer
Starting point is 00:20:18 Dr. Bravestone all too relatable at age 16 he resembled a 46 year old man standing
Starting point is 00:20:24 at 6 4 weighing 245 pounds and sporting a thick mustache my god despite his bulky exterior the young
Starting point is 00:20:32 Duane was very much a vulnerable teen trying to find himself perfect perfect I mean yeah I've seen pictures of him
Starting point is 00:20:39 when he was younger he looked really old yeah um especially for his age so i guess he was again cast perfectly yeah so again fun sequel um i think like i said it paid respect and homage to a lot of the things that worked in the first film while being its own fun cast really good stuff i love the emotional character building stuff that they had i love the messaging of teamwork um and all that and just building each other up and it was a fun adventure film while also balancing that tiptoeing line of having some scary shit in it as well so i really enjoyed it. Yeah, I enjoyed it too. Thank you guys so much for watching. Leave down in the
Starting point is 00:21:15 comments if you guys want to play Jamanji or if you got a favorite board game. Thank you so much and we will see you guys in the next one. Duceus.
