Starting point is 00:01:32 present or close to the present and we overlap this moment from before. There's just so much atmosphere at work and I mean, yeah, there's a lot of mystery and we got Guy Gardner and there's all sorts of other stuff. But like this is the thing that's saying that has been increasingly singing across this show is just like how much mood and how much life is in the characters in small gesture. Aside from the like the comic bookie sort of like, we're going to dance around like big events that are outlandish and make them seem less outlandish doing so. But yeah, just like the, the Paul of Hal Jordan's death and actually getting that confirmed,

Starting point is 00:02:10 actually just like spending an episode accepting and sort of coping with it along with some of the other, you know, mysterious aspects. Just really rewarding. And I like to this sort of like, he's dealing with multiple things throughout the episode. He's got his brothers on the phone. He's got the, you know, pitch. You see him in his element and then you see him pulled back into the fray. and yeah I just thought in a in a season that has been marked by strong individual episodes across the board this only has gotten better for me

Starting point is 00:02:39 I'm sad about Jordan me too me too that's uh that kind of sucks we never got to get uh you know we only got that one fucking right around's movie yeah and then we just kind of i i i feel like for the it's got it's it's hard to divorce for me in this moment right now the uh the idea that we don't actually have we're not going to get the hal jordan done proper in the sense of like his own solo adventures carroll ferris all that fun shit maybe they got something in mind i highly doubt it but to not have that is uh is a bummer it's it's actually like a bummer not even like the biggest green lantern fan of or something to that extent it's just it's something that i think when the universe was announced or whatever they want to do it there was always a thing of like well one day we'll get a better how

Starting point is 00:03:33 Jordan one day we'll get the proper rendition and I love what Kyle Chandler does and I think the show is really good it is a it is a thing of having to accept a choice though

Starting point is 00:03:43 that I think works for the story and I have to kind of just focus on that right now but I'd be totally lying if I said that I didn't find it a bit of a bummer knowing that we wouldn't actually get some of that that's a big bold move it's a big big order

Starting point is 00:04:01 fortunately though john stewart is a really good character fortunately everything in this episode again proves that he's really the star and i'm excited to see what he does a man of tomorrow and yeah like i think this present day storyline was very intriguing and the mystery was the mystery just keeps getting more like progressively

Starting point is 00:04:24 much more interesting and captivating but my favorite stuff is really the personal stuff It's really, it's not even so much the mystery of like what's going on. I'd like him arguing with his brother in the car. Like that. It's some of my favorite or talking with the waitress at the home of what happened when they were nine years old and watching the disturbance. And the little touches of I do eat meat now and I don't talk to my mom, like how he accepted himself and came into his own. But that also caused like a further development of connection with his brothers, while also a further rejection of the people who raised him.

Starting point is 00:04:57 Yeah. Like this divide that's happening within in this or a boris effective acceptance, thinking what is acceptance and what isn't with thyself. And also learning to having difficulty with forgiveness. There's a lot of the emotional themes that I find very strong, more so than the actual, like the mystery itself is interesting enough, but it's all the surrounding elements. And I don't quite know how that will fit for everybody else. So for me, that's what's working stronger.

Starting point is 00:05:26 and I'm just excited to see whatever the fuck else unfolds, but I'm a little bummed about Hal Jordan. Yeah, I'm definitely mirroring a lot of both your thoughts. I'm glad we get a Hell Jordan via the ring, but it does feel very, it's Hell Jordan. So there is a little bit of that where I'm like, okay, it's a bold swing, but I'm I okay.

Starting point is 00:05:52 And so I do think it definitely works narratively. I do think it definitely works for this story being told. And maybe, you know, if we were five years in to lanterns, I'd be like, that's a good story. And I get it. But right now I'm just like one year in going like, but it's how old George. So I think I need to just like marinate on it a bit. You know, I would be lying if I said I wasn't bothered or affected by it in a negative and respecting the story positive way.

Starting point is 00:06:18 But my positives are all because of the show is so good. My negatives are all my association of the comic and my association to the character. association what the lanterns are. So it's a tricky balance to walk with how I feel about adaptation versus translation. I am a huge, huge proponent of taking bold swings, using thematic elements while telling a new story and all those things. But I'm also very aware that, you know, you don't get the lantern universe without Hal Jordan.

Starting point is 00:06:45 And, you know, Hal Jordan's not even the first lantern. There have been lantern before him. But he's the green lantern to so many. and he's the Green Lantern of modern time. So it is hard to kind of like shake that feeling. That said the actual episode, super captivating. They did a good job throughout the episode stacking that it affected like his relationship with his brothers,

Starting point is 00:07:07 his relationship with Hal, the relationship in the town is like there was nothing it did in effect. And the consequences were he kind of came into his own. It was really interesting to see how it took this major of an event for him to undo the years of programming his parents gave them. The cost of that was his parents aren't in his life anymore. He won't even talk to them. He's still a responsible guy, so he's taking care of his dad.

Starting point is 00:07:29 He's taking care of his mom. He did answer with that emergency, but he's not in their lives anymore because this event caused him to decide to be his own man. It's a meatloaf. So, yeah, drank a beer. He did all the things we saw him not doing. He went to the house, ate tofu, didn't drink. Now he's coming into his own.

Starting point is 00:07:46 There's also something to be said of like the health of that, right? Like, your boy eats more meat than most and loves a drink. But I know I'm shortening my life by doing that. There's an interesting commentary to be made that also the vices he's chosen are counter to the healthy choices that he had been making. He was probably a healthier man not drinking. He was probably a healthier man not eating meat. And now, you know, his reaction to this trauma is he's still a guy that, you know, can take

Starting point is 00:08:14 every phone call, can handle this much stress, can juggle all these things, can stay focused and attentive. But he's not a specimen of perfection. because of the events of this. So that adds to the mystery as well. So it's an interesting way to tell that, you know, show and not tell storytelling of like, you know, he has slipped and the vigilance he was.

Starting point is 00:08:34 This dude doesn't he meet and I'm always like fucking couldn't be me. But it is something that like is a showing of willpower. And this is a show about motherfuck of willpower. So it's also interesting to see a willpower slip in that he's eating meat and loaf and drinking. So a lot of interesting layers to this episode. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely.

Starting point is 00:08:54 Like the whole funeral scene. I love the choice of that. I like the complications. What's the sheriff's name for God damn, but Kane. Kane. Sheriff Kane. It's because she texted so I had a visual. I'm a visual learner.

Starting point is 00:10:04 that brings out a complication of course with John Stewart. Like how when John and Howe were first at the diner, I like the quietness and the study that they're doing with each other. and how's an appropriateness with talking with John's mom. He's, this difficult, the show does a lot of saying, of showing without saying. And sometimes they say,

Starting point is 00:10:29 well, just enough in order to get across your point, like with Carol saying, he liked you a lot, but I bet he never said it. Yeah. It's like, we knew that.

Starting point is 00:10:37 We can feel that that's a big part of it. But the important thing is that we were able to tell and feel that for a long time before Carol had to affirm that for, his belief. So I think a lot of the show is really, it's a really great personal, intimate, small. Like, it's really like small scale shows. It's just a, it's a weird show. Like, it's weird. It's good. It's weird. How it's lanterns, but it's so small. It's so simple and so barren. And the locations are so simple. Everything is just simple. It's very, very simple. And the complication is all internal. So it's It's really, I like it.

Starting point is 00:11:17 I do like it. And it's going to be cool to watch him go into the one thing we know he is a manna tomorrow. It's like, you know eventually he's going to be the lantern again. Yeah. And it would be weird. Even him getting the ring in this episode. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They didn't do the thing that they pretended.

Starting point is 00:11:32 Turned even like they didn't go like two episodes or now. I'm like, if we manned tomorrow, you don't sit it. Like they didn't do that because that'd be annoying. Yeah, they were like, okay, this episode. But he's, but now he got it not as like, I got to take up the mantle. But no, it's like talking to how. talking to Hal I need to figure out the mystery. I need to solve this.

Starting point is 00:11:49 And the only way to solve this is I'll get Hal's help, solving this problem. So let me get the ring. And I like how, like kind of Vince Gilliganie about it, where he manipulates the situation with Guy Gardner telling him, we need the ring for funeral purposes, burial, honor. But he has a whole other ulterior. Alteria motive here.

Starting point is 00:12:08 He doesn't trust Guy. Yeah. He's so good at selling that like in the moment you could believe it. Yeah. And then he's digging it up and he's like, well of course yeah that's the actual reason because you gotta take this over to that storage

Starting point is 00:12:19 unit and open up the box you know yeah her name's Carrie by the way Carrie Kane Officer Kerry alliteration Kane oh cool episode did a lot I dug it I am intrigued how I'm gonna feel

Starting point is 00:12:33 going forward if Hal doesn't come back he does cannot still denial he does die in the comic books he comes back as not so nice a guy are we gonna hear Aaron's music though will he sell the panic rooms Is Earl going to move in with John at the end of the season? The big question.

Starting point is 00:12:48 It's not about how. It's not about the mystery of what happens. It's about Earl. It's about Earl. It was a bit. It really bummed me out when he, the general hung up with him. It was very effective. We just got that new conceit this episode.

Starting point is 00:13:00 That was like 45 minutes ago and we're like, damn it, that sucks. No, it is. He's been working for 10 years on this. It is, it is like, I'm not disinterested by any stretch in the mystery, but I am very pleased that like so much of the interpersonal stuff is so engrossing. that I don't even care if we get back to Lantern stuff at a certain point. You know, because you're just like, man, this poor sheriff. And, you know, this interesting guy is like, yeah, the web of things is really interesting. I think that's what's making us enjoy it.

Starting point is 00:13:25 And I'm really curious if what contingents of comic fans will feel that way. Because it is very much about the personal moments. And I love shows that are so gripping that you do care about someone hanging up on someone. That is an impressive feat of writing. But how will that translate? So we'll see. And that's a great, just a final thing. It's a great thread because the whole time,

Starting point is 00:13:44 It's like we, in these situations, these kinds of characters, you're designed to believe their conviction and be comforted by it. In this whole episode, he's like trying to reassure his brother until the very end. Like, no, no, no, don't worry. I got this. One more readdressment. It's fine. I'll be there.

Starting point is 00:13:57 No, just hand him the phone. Like, and until the very end, you're like, no, he's got this, right? He's got this. I got to believe he's got this. And then he doesn't got this. And that's a good midpoint point to get to in a subtle way, you know? Yeah. Oh, and Guy Gardner, his tone translating over from Superman to here was really well done.

Starting point is 00:14:13 So refreshing. Still feels like the same character. It doesn't feel like, oh, they did a complete 180 on dialogue choices. It didn't have that whiplash of dialogue effect the way how Lex was in Peacemaker. You're like, nope. That's a testament to this universe being able to build out such different things because Superman and this are very different. Superman is like, we go subatomic crazy colors, wonky splitting of Metropolis. This is like, we're going to talk about phones.

Starting point is 00:14:35 But this still felt like the same guy Gardner. Yeah. That's impressive. Whereas like I, even though James Gunn wrote Peacemaker and Superman, I was like, this feels like a very different Lex Luthor. That Nathan Philean guy, he's got layers. Who knew? He can do many, many things. Yeah.

Starting point is 00:14:50 But yeah, I had a great time at this one. We'll be back next week. Very intrigued. We've seen the trailer show us how big and grandiose this gets, even with Hal Jordan in those scenes. So is it going to be all a construct? Or am I not willing to accept he's dead?
