So Rejectnationshop.com.
It's where you can get all these cool merch gear.
Oh, my God.
Oh, I thought there was this, that's something going to me.
Aaron, how are you feeling after that intense ride we just went on?
I'm feeling good.
That was a quickie.
That was a little 80-minute movie.
Had some really creative ways of showing their threat, showing Diana.
I thought the acting was good.
And yeah, for someone who came off of YouTube being able to have the opportunity to do a full-length feature film.
I thought it was really impressive, the fact that you're able to have this low budget experience that was still narratively effective.
The pacing was really good.
I thought the way that they showcased the powers or her abilities and the justification for why she is what she is or how she is what she is was very plausible.
I like the lead.
I like the kid.
I thought it was more for me.
I thought it was more entertaining than it was scary.
and I think part of that
I know I feel like we had like third parts
it did get me but I feel like we had a little bit of a different
reaction of our viewer experience
yeah I don't know I think because I've
I've seen other horror movies recently
like like smile and smile too
and I think for me I
it's always the the drawn out
tension of suspense of like
for me what scares me is like
seeing something or not quite sure that I'm seeing
something and like holding on a frame like
the rapid
escalation of of tension i feel like this did have tension but i felt like for the most part the
scares i kind of saw coming uh so didn't get me as much but um yeah i definitely enjoy the experience
and i enjoyed watching it with you i'm i'm really impressed and i'm glad that this was able to
launch uh david s sandberg's career and i look forward to seeing what other horror movies he does in
the future yeah no that's well uh well said um i'm so i was in a depressed mood coming into this
because, again, just all the rain and work, as I mentioned.
I'm still depressed, but again, this was entertaining.
So from that perspective, I did enjoy the film.
And in regards to, I do agree with you.
A lot of stuff did, like, I mean, we were calling out stuff,
but I still found it rather entertaining.
And yes, a lot of the scares were telegraph,
but for someone like me, I'm a novice when it comes to scares.
I get scared so easily when it comes to horror films.
Aaron has not really watched horror films with me at home.
Just to give you-
I don't watch horror movies at home.
Yeah, I don't really watch horror movies.
Again, the horror movies I usually, just to give you guys background,
the horror movies I usually gravitate and watch.
I guess you could say Halloween.
I mean, Halloween are, the Michael Myers films are horror movies,
but the first few times I watch them,
I usually just press the mute or the fast forward.
but now that I've seen them I know where the scares come so I'm good
but I mean that's not supernatural obviously Freddie Kruger I love those movies
and child's play that's more supernatural but again I would say the first couple times I was hit
the mute or the fast forward now I knew where it was coming so I wouldn't get scared you know
what I mean having a microphone with loud volume it's a little bit more amped up
point being is I get scared very easily that's all I'm trying to say so even when something
is telegraphed yes but I do agree with your points smile that's that I did
react to that a while back. That scared the crap out of me. I still haven't seen the second one. But
I still rather enjoyed this. I like the lore. I like the world building. I thought it was
fascinating. I don't know what the budget is. I will look it up at some point within a few minutes
of our review here just to see. But I like the creativeness that they were able to do. Some of the
shots where she would turn on the light, something would drop, stuff like that. And the way they
were able to, when they shot her, she would disappear. And just stuff like that, I thought it was
really intuitive and fun to watch. It was really cool. And I do like, again, I did know David
Samberg came from a YouTube background. But yeah, this guy really is a very good filmmaker. I really
enjoyed the first Shazam. I know Shazam 2 is not very, I think it's not very well regarded. I don't know.
It's all right. Okay. Okay. I haven't seen it. So, but I guess the two things now I've seen of his,
I enjoy. I do remember too, like that movie, the first Shazam, it's been a while since I watched. I remember
it did have horror aspects.
I'm like, yeah, I could see this guy having horror chops,
and I didn't know he had made lights out,
but I remember that boardroom scene where all the demons started coming.
I was like, this really feels horror-esque in the scene.
So I was like, now I see this movie came out like a year or two before that.
I was like, or three years, whatever is 2019, I think Shazam was.
But I was like, okay, I can see where his horror chops came from, for sure.
Now when I rewatch Shazam, whenever that is, like, I'm going to have this in mind.
but uh i did like the character of rebecca and i like uh martin i thought he was a very young
good actor uh especially too he's going up against some heavyweights i mean you got teresa pomer
and you got uh maria bello and those are two really good actors who've been in the business
for a very long time and he i thought he did a great job i like the family dynamic i also thought
they did a really good job we mentioned it during the reaction um the way they explained how diana
I got her, I mean, first of all, she had a condition, and then the way she got her powers.
I thought they used visual narration and exposition in a very smart way for us, the audience,
because obviously up to that point, we're like, how does she have these power?
What's going on?
So I like the way they did the world building in that scene.
I thought it was very integral, and I actually bought it in that moment.
I thought it serviced the story very well.
I also, I had a feeling, too, that she did something about the dad, and I mean, I think that was kind of obvious, you know,
or that he had seen her and ran off.
but still um i think i actually really liked her character and made sense why she had abandonment
issues and why she was afraid to get emotionally attached uh definitely you know obviously you know
she had to deal with diana in the first place her mother was just so completely uh because she was
you know with diana uh having to deal with her to make sure she stays away from her kid she was very
alone from that she had lost her father um and then again the the the uh sadness and scares that she got
from diana as well like she avoided all attachment probably most of her life so uh i really understood
and connected with her character from that perspective and i really enjoyed her performance so um i think
the most important thing when it comes to me especially with horror films do i connect with the
characters do i resonate with them and i really i did especially with her i also did like you know
where it came from with her with the mother with sophy because at first i just thought we were going
with just the crazy angle and again there was that at first but everything was to protect her
children in the end and i i did appreciate that you know mama mama bear there um and again with
what happened i know i kind of called it right before it happened but it didn't matter because i was
so invested and there was emotional depth there that i didn't see coming originally with i just
thought they were going to go the crazy angle so i did like the subversion of expectations um that
happened up to there with in regards to the boyfriend and with the mother uh up to that point so
I did enjoy the performances.
I liked the characters.
Like you mentioned,
it was a very quick film.
Paced pretty well.
Yeah.
I enjoyed it.
Again, it kind of reminded me a little bit,
and you guys let me know if you disagree,
of darkness falls.
I'd be interested to see if you want to see
or if you guys want him to react to that one.
I would like that.
Some of the rules apply.
I mean,
it's pretty much the same thing.
She can only attack in dark.
It's not,
it's not spoiling anything.
But, I mean, it's darkness falls.
she can only attack you in the dark so kind of remind me of that they have different kinds of
powers but both supernatural forces but uh yeah i think i like this one better though than darkness
falls um okay but yeah this uh this definitely will make me not want to turn off the lights
anytime soon although i'm sure i will tonight uh but i will definitely be thinking about this when
i do uh preferably more about her because she's a very uh attractive woman but um yeah no i again
i enjoyed this also too i one other thing before uh we continue
continue on. I really enjoyed
how adaptable and intuitive
some of the characters were like Brett, for instance.
I know we just mentioned how they subverted
our expectations. We expected him to
pass away in the film. I like
in that moment we were we expecting him to pass. Again,
I know people are like, dude, it was such an
obvious decision to turn on the lights of
the car right there. Probably.
But when you're being attacked like that,
like all logic.
Yeah, it was. No, I'm just saying
someone might say that. I don't know.
I don't think somebody will be. Yeah, but my point
being is like it is quick thinking and like a lot of times when you're being attacked like then in the
moment logic just goes out the door so for him to just like like you said just quick think like then
and to uh just adapt to the moment and do that was like yes that made me so happy i know for a second
we're like where where's he going but i had a feeling he was going to come back i just thought he was
going to like crash through the house but either way that was great and uh i liked his character a lot
and i know i had that one moment where i was mad that he was questioning i thought he was just
let me just explain really quick um i thought he was just being selfish so that he could stay there i know
that wasn't the question he asked he's like are you doing this more for yourself or to hurt your mother
i think that was the question something like that but i i really thought he was coming from a place of
of i want to i just want you to myself kind of thing i thought that's at first where he was coming
oh no he said do like are you doing this for your brother or to yeah are you doing this for your brother
or to punish your mom yes i understood but i think uh originally i thought that's where he was coming from
As the film kept on progress, I'm like, okay, no, he actually does care about this woman.
Yeah.
So I just needed to give it.
Yeah, no, no, no.
I just needed to give him more time.
I made a very judgmental, Colin.
I'm holding myself accountable.
I was wrong.
He's a great guy.
I'm glad that's the guy she found.
So do you have any other thoughts before?
Yeah.
I have a few.
I think that for me, I think some of, though I, though I,
recognize and like the creative choice in editing to display the powers that she had i felt like
some of the tension for me because i feel like a lot of a lot of what makes horror is like
your own mind's anticipation of whatever the thing is going to be in combination with the
sound so i feel like for me once she was actually shown we got to see what she looked like so
that tension was deflated for me but i'll say that the makeup job was really cool i thought she looked
really gray i figure in a movie like this and a concept like that you're gonna want to be able to
show whatever that creature or that person is um also didn't i don't think they really went back
to what happened we know what happened to the dad but we never really saw the characters feel affected
by that experience hey guys i've hit a point in life where i realize time flies and it

For me, Acorns, mighty oaks do grow.
Thank you again, Acorns, for everything that you do.
I was thinking that, too.
I was like, I, they had a line where they talked about it with the mom about the dad.
I'm like, I can't, I don't feel like the dad is gone now because it doesn't feel like it.
From their, like, I don't feel it from the characters.
Like, I can't, I get it, Martin's a young kid.
So, you know, but still, like, this is his father.
I was her husband.
Yeah, and it's her, I know, but she's, she's a little loon.
Yeah, so, but still, like.
they had one conversation about it but I did think that also one other thing too I was
mentioning it at the end of the reaction I know the movie had to end but they were in an
ambulance and I get it they were all wounded the cops say to them like okay we got uh your
mother's passed away here gunshot wound these two of these cops are gone you guys are
or at least the you know Rebecca is a suspect like so I'm just curious what happened or
they just go no everything's fine
hit let's patch you guys up you're in the ambulance all good we have three dead people with no
explanation somebody's gonna have to i'm just curious i hope obviously we as the audience know what
happened so i'm hoping nothing happens to them i'm hoping like everything's good and the kid gets
to live with them maybe they'll try to pin it on the mom like oh yeah the mom attack them and then
off herself yeah because uh you know i don't know how it's going to go down if you explain
who diana is and what happened i don't know if they're going to believe that um so yeah i'm just
I don't know if they needed to include that scene,
but just for me, you, and the audience,
I'm curious what would have happened.
Yeah, likewise.
I do agree with you.
When we do see the character,
it kind of does get rid of the suspense.
I do like the whole Alfred Hitchcockian approach of not really,
you kind of just see a little bit of the shadow,
and that just makes it scary because now your mind is playing things.
Yeah, you know, being creative in your own mind,
I do agree with you there.
Do you think it would have been a good idea,
if they would have just saved that maybe
to like the last five minutes of
with Diana potentially
because the only part of the part that
got me the most was when the kids walked down
the hallway with the candle and you can
barely tell like is she there or she's not
there then like once she's close to the frame
you see her like a move from the shadow
yeah and then over you like I like
horror best when it's playing
on your senses yes and I feel
like if you like
the stuff with the footsteps or like
nail scratching or under the
That was my favorite jump scare under the bed.
Yeah, I feel like if you're playing with these other things, I feel like it makes the experience more enriching.
But it did use some of that, but I would like them to have utilized more of that.
But yeah, I think for what the movie is, it does a great job with what it presents.
And yeah, whatever this director does in the future, I'm game.
I'm down to see how he evolves as a horror director.
Yeah, no, he did a good job because like, yeah, just for instance, that under the bed,
that was my favorite jump scare because like in my mind I'm thinking of what she besides grabbing
I'm like what she is doing under that bed you know what I mean and like my mind's just playing
like a bunch of different scenarios so also you too you save budget wise as well I was a little
confused about how she travels to different places because she went to his the office he was at
and then but she's supposed to be tied to the mom that she also went to the girl's apartment
and I was like how what how does this work is it the mom's connection or is it connected to them
that part was not very clear to me unless we're talking missed something but i feel you but with
supernatural forces i don't even try to play the plausible how does that work it's just it so she's just
the mom is just chilling when diana is at the the daughter's apartment she's like oh okay i'm just
by myself you got me there i don't know okay uh really quick before we get into trivia uh rotten
tomatoes let's do one score at time and i'll tell you okay rotten tomatoes uh critics what do you think
I'm going to guess 72.
75.
That's close.
Audience.
84.
61.
Mm.
By the way, the length of time for this film is one hour and 17 minutes, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
Man, it's a shorty.
I mean, yeah.
I think it barely qualifies his feature length.
Yeah, and really quick, I just want to see what the budget was for this film.
What do you think the budget was for this film?
I'm just curious.
$4 million.
You are insane.
4.9 million.
Wow, it was close.
You were.
Worldwide box office, domestic and international put together worldwide.
For $5 million budget, I'm going to guess $80 million.
149.
Wow, we'll say $1.50.
You didn't get a sequel?
I don't.
Let me just type in lights out too.
I don't believe so.
And then we'll get the trivia here.
Lights out to...
um no right i think it just says fan made okay unless the Warner bro i don't think so no probably
not lights out have a sequel set to hit theaters in 2025 i don't know is it there's a cast it looks
like it looks like there might hold on hold on guys there might be a lights out too hold on
we're discovering this in real time real time no i don't think it's real dude
no maybe not
no
okay well
you guys let us know if you want lights out too
but I'll ask that again at the end
let's do really quick
trivia
okay
David F Sandberg decided to focus on
practical effects and avoid as much
CGI as possible
that makes sense especially with the
budget being as low as it was
that makes full of sense
made back its entire production budget
on its opening day at the box office
despite being released in the same weekend
as Star Trek Beyond and Ice Age
Collision course. Collision
course. Collision course, yes.
Wow. Awesome. Crazy.
Director David F. Sandberg aimed to use
as much authentic lighting for the film
as possible. Some scenes were
only lit by candlelights or fluorescent
tubes. Very impressive.
The mannequins
in the basement were not brought in for the movie.
They were already placed there by the owner of
house creepy fun teresa palmer had hadn't seen the design of diana before filming until she filmed
her first her first scene with her on a completely dark set there was an intentional directorial
choice so to provoke a genuine reaction of fear when seeing the design alicia vela bailey the
woman in the costume was previously palmer stunt double on the film i am number four in 2011
it would have ruined the effect had she seen her prior as she would have recognized her therefore
losing the authentic expression of fear.
Smart.
I will do one more and then two spoilers and we'll call it.
Diana was created with a photorealistic prosthetic suit
that could also function as a green screen suit
so as to remove her from the screen when the lights came on.
The designer of the suit previously created the title character of Mrs. Doubtfire.
Love that.
Oh, nice.
Love that movie.
I've seen it.
Oh, you've not?
Never seen a guy.
Oh, that'd be a great reaction.
We've got to get Aaron on that.
Love to.
um okay i'll just do this is a really long one so let's just keep it at one spoiler okay
director david f sandberg revealed that in the original test screenings there was an additional
finale after sophie's death via gunshot i can't say that word because we're not allowed to on
youtube via gunshot there was an additional finale after so uh yeah sometime after the ambulance scene
and Rebecca learns that she had been made Martin's foster parent.
That night, Rebecca wakes up and finds Brett missing and Martin talking to Diana again.
Oh, no.
Martin says that Diana can now speak with Sophie.
Excuse me.
Martin says that Diana can now speak with Sophie and wants to take him away to protect him.
Rebecca refuses and goes looking for Brett.
She finds him knocked out in the bathroom and is suddenly attacked by Diana.
Rebecca then reveals that she was lured into her, into a.
room fitted with a very strong lights which she activates completely oblitering diana rebecca
sure's martin that if diana ever returns they can beat her again as they are fighters after a negative
reaction the scene was removed and is included as a supplement feature on the blue ray and DVD oh interesting
i don't know how do you feel about that scene i'm like who they were ended it the way they did yeah
i mean that extra yeah anyways um interesting to read about at least that they filmed shot in the i mean
obviously when they had several negative reactions like we'll just make this ending instead but
any final thoughts um no i had a good time and yeah look forward to seeing what the director does
next yeah likewise uh anyways guys if you stayed with us this long and you kept the lights on
we appreciate it but don't be rude to diana uh anyways thank you so much um let us know in
the comments what you think of lights out are there other horror movies you want me to suffer
through and Aaron as well to react to other members of the team. We'd love to hear your thoughts
in the comments below. And yeah, take care. See you later.
