Starting point is 00:02:19 Now it's time to give an honest review of everything. Humphrey, you seem like you had feelings and directions in here, And I feel like my specific question has set you up to say your thoughts. I think I can be pretty succinct. This is a very fun movie that has a lot of really wonderful elements and a really lovely, fun, bouncy, energy, lots of color. I think it could be a little more streamlined. And I think the way that they went about, you're in a weird position because the he-man cartoons are like campy in a way. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:03:01 And, you know, there's a certain amount of that that wouldn't quite translate wholesale to live action. So I like that they keep some of the quirkiness. I could feel them kind of searching for some of the comedy, at least on the skeletor side, some of the time, even though I was largely charmed by that. I think the first half is a bit stronger just because of like the discovery and the sort of like fish out of water
Starting point is 00:03:26 back and forth nature of Adam on Earth, versus Adam in Eternia. But, like, lovely energy, you know, if you maybe streamlined this or moved some things around so that you could pay a couple of things off more proportionally, I think this would be, like, a slam dunk. I could see why this didn't maybe, like, galvanize the people at, like, almost two and a half hours. Yeah. I love the production value and the imagination, and I would love to see another one.
Starting point is 00:03:54 Nice. Wow. Wow. and any standout performers or characters. I mean, I really enjoyed Jared La. As Skeletor, as Tim Curry, Bain with just a dash of Jack Sparrow Skeletor.
Starting point is 00:04:11 Very true. And Nicholas Galison, I've seen part of the sheep detectives, which he's very charming in. Oh, cool. But very different mode he is playing here. He's British. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:24 So that's a thing. But I thought he was really, he filled the shoes well. I think the two of them stood out the most. Yeah. It's good. The main character. Who stood out to you? Hey, wait, no.
Starting point is 00:04:38 I don't go. I don't go. John. Okay. Who stood out to you? But if I had to pick one, I would definitely say it was Marina Bacheran. She was in the movie. For like five minutes.
Starting point is 00:04:50 She stood out of someone who didn't have much to tell. She was in the movie. for your second. So, LJ, you seem like like you actually knew quite a bit. You were recognizing and calling out character names and stuff, and I was pretty cool to see
Starting point is 00:05:07 your enthusiasm and your energy. Sure. And, I mean, overall, like, what was your feelings on this experience? Honestly, it was fine. It was fun.
Starting point is 00:05:24 I think I can agree with Humphrey, it's very energetic and they're leaning into the meta of the campiness and whatnot. And due to that, the humor kind of worked sometimes. It didn't work all the time because I was
Starting point is 00:05:40 trying to really get invested into the heart of the movie when it gets really emotional. But they just cut it with more of the humor. And so it's like, oh! And it just felt like it was almost getting there in terms of the heart. But
Starting point is 00:05:55 otherwise I had fun the action sequence are shot really well I can appreciate that a lot of the practical makeup and visual effects are stunning and cool and to answer the question that you asked Humphrey in terms of the standouts
Starting point is 00:06:12 I don't ask you. Okay never mind I won't answer but that's my question I can ask you that please I mean don't ask him like who's there was there any surprises Tila
Starting point is 00:06:25 stole this show in terms of action and like cool factor. But yes, I have to unfortunately agree with Jared Lotto being very fun and cool in his role. And I didn't know Kristen Wigg voiced the robot. So that's pretty cool. That's nice. I love to hear it.
Starting point is 00:06:43 But how about you, Greg, now that I've shared my thoughts? Well. Did you like Allison Bree? Dude, she was great. She was great. Kick the ass. Take names. I felt like I really think like
Starting point is 00:07:01 the first 45 minutes of this movie are awesome I was super into it and I was really like relieved and like damn I'm really I'm loving I was loving the movie a lot they surprised me in like how they did the fish out of water and then of course with
Starting point is 00:07:21 oh my god I'm ready to break that I can go back. I was like a refrain there. But with Adam, with Adam's, you know, like his time on Earth and then we first goes back.
Starting point is 00:07:32 I was, I was enjoying, like, all of it. And it was, like, great action. Every action scene was pretty great.
Starting point is 00:07:39 Even in parts of the movie or acts of the movie where I wasn't fully into the experience, the action was always rock solid, right down to the final fight scene with Skeletor and Adam. That was that, that scene slapped pretty hard. I do think the movies did weirdly start to lose some of its charm for me and energy when he actually becomes human.
Starting point is 00:08:06 I agree. Unfortunately. Because it seemed like they dropped. What was working about the movie is he's the main character and he's an underdog in a precarious situation. And he's just like he's hopeful and he has a goal. to become something and somebody. And then right when he becomes he man, a lot of that kind of just feels like it drops
Starting point is 00:08:32 and it becomes really just a straightforward pretty much by the numbers what you'd expect right down to the character arc. And so it doesn't really feel like to me it was earning a lot of its runtime. I felt like this could have been like 25 minutes shorter especially with how by the numbers a lot of it was. Definitely.
Starting point is 00:08:55 And I found myself like getting disappointed in a movie I wasn't even like that anticipated because the movie had like really reeled me in with them. I'm feeling a lot of the uniqueness. I'm really appreciating the writing and the characterization
Starting point is 00:09:08 of what they've done with Adam because they made him a really a guy you can actually root but made chosen boy character he man guy like a guy to actually root for and then suddenly there was lack of conflict with him. There was lack of overcoming
Starting point is 00:09:24 anything really and lack of stakes and stuff so once that dips with your main guy and then the other supporting characters I agree with like the emotional parts it's like part of what is making the humor succeed is being
Starting point is 00:09:41 connected to the emotion right so in the first 45 minutes when you're connected to his struggle that's what makes the humor actually really sing so when you're not as connected to the other emotional stuff the humor's not really singing super loud again action great throughout
Starting point is 00:09:58 visual effects great throughout yeah i think inters elva is great in this movie like he's he's really having a fun time and he really brings a lot of depth to that character there's anyone who's like a super three-dimensional character it's very much him the supporting cast
Starting point is 00:10:14 like i love the the visuals of fisto ram man trap jaw all those guys it's like super cool to behold but i'd be lying if I said like the movie was really I started a movie that I was like really vibed and feeling it and loving it
Starting point is 00:10:30 I found myself becoming less I was just feeling less and less and less as the movie kept going because you go from these surprises you go from this like the prologue which I think it was a good call it's like yeah you go from this fantasy where you're like wow they're really
Starting point is 00:10:47 throwing down the fantasy aspect and the sci-fi aspect and then you go to the real world and you have all this like surprise is even if you have some degree of familiarity. And then once, yeah, you get to full formation, it's a bummer because I feel like they had an opportunity here with the literal themes that they injected this with. This has arguably more thematic ideas
Starting point is 00:11:07 than a lot of like He Man cartoon episodes. And so like make it such that like, yeah, he gets the power but needs to develop the confidence to use the power wisely or properly. And it seems like when he gets the power, like the transition from like Heeman in a, turnia back in action to the ending where he's just a little more confident and knows how to like pull the team together now is like not very big yeah he kind of once he gains the power he's kind of set he just kind of sort of needs to learn to slightly use his communication skills better and
Starting point is 00:11:40 i feel like if they had zeroed in on that more you could have had something that really slapped across the board because at two hours and 20 minutes i think you needed to go a little bit more committed to the drama actually to gain that runtime or child this back 20, 30 minutes and really lean into the fun craziness. And I feel like at 220 with this tone, they kind of, yeah, once you get to the halfway point, you're like, oh yeah, I know all the beats that are supposed to come now. So I'm kind of waiting for them to have. Yeah, yeah. Ladies and gentlemen, we are like halfway through the year.
Starting point is 00:12:11 And if building your credit was one of those goals that you had never started or you wanted to get better at, this is your side because you're listening to this video because this video is sponsored by kickoff. And what appeal to me about kickoff was having, like, a simple, affordable place to start. Auto pay especially stood out because I feel like I got a million things to remember. Kickoff Basic is their most popular plan. It's $5 a month.
Starting point is 00:13:17 Kickoff Premium is their most balanced plan. That is $20. And Kickoff Ultimate, its most powerful plan is $35. I was like, they really made sure he
Starting point is 00:14:37 wasn't marketing this film. Which is a surprise because he is actually like Skeletor is one of the more fun interesting characters, but he's not scary. He's not like a villain. You're intimidated by any capacity. And I do wish that. And like I like the robot.
Starting point is 00:14:53 I really felt that when the robot, what's the robot's name? Roboto? Roboto. Oh, God. Think like a kid. So when Roboto was taken out, I was like, oh, that really sucks.
Starting point is 00:15:06 And yeah, like there was just there's moments where I feel like characterization was trying to like really make me go yeah, like with the freaking tiger
Starting point is 00:15:16 and even right down Atila and Duncan a lot of that emotional core just became, the writing and thread of it just became less engaging and just became like, get to plot,
Starting point is 00:15:30 get to plot, get to plot, and then do it. Not against the next set piece. The set time it seemed like it was kind of like dragging on stuff. When it was like, wait a minute, though, we have this runtime. Why aren't you using that to elevate or go a little bit more into it? You know, it's like I don't really know what people expect from this world.
Starting point is 00:15:52 The only reason there's a disappointment for me is because the movie seemed like it was really singing high. And maybe we're on the opposite end of a lot of the audience. I really don't know. maybe there's a lot of audience that's like no once he became he man that's when the movie did it for me and I imagine there's probably people who felt that way I just didn't I did not feel that way
Starting point is 00:16:11 I thought it was actually losing a lot of the spirit because it started becoming like a lot easier for him like there was not even really a discovery in when he is he man he's just kind of like fucking starts nailing it
Starting point is 00:16:27 yeah I was like you've been like gone gone from this place all your life. You haven't gone through all this training and even with like the raw power. There's so much to do there and it's weird because again with all the craftsmanship on display the script does feel like it kind of just drops out
Starting point is 00:16:43 once you get to Eternia. Did you guys did you guys like the way they approached Skeletor's humor? Because much of the time they're going for like he's menacing but then he's got like this awkward sense of jokeyness
Starting point is 00:16:59 or like he has his own awkwardness that translates to funny when everyone's like standing around like I don't know laugh he's laughing like I think there was a commentary of like meta villain type it was very much like yes let's lean towards the fact that he's just a silly insecure dude that happens to be evil and
Starting point is 00:17:19 whatnot but the evil doesn't really isn't really the focus it's focus how ridiculous he is but because I liked I liked his performance it worked for me um in regards to being silly and strange and meta again so it's like quirky yeah he's not like in the cartoon like not it's just it's as point of comparison like yes the cartoons he's always sitting and like cackling and ha ha ha ha bring this and yes and here they make him more like a little grand yes i have
Starting point is 00:17:49 grand designs true um i i think it comes down to the specific joke telling oh okay because when he's going in um uh Adam's mind. And he's like, it's funny when he's like, what is this? Like the office and stuff. Because he's not from our world. Yes. So he wouldn't talk like he's from our world. But then when they were doing comedy,
Starting point is 00:18:16 suddenly he's, to his dialogue and everything is like an awkward guy from out. Like he's using language that from our world. Yes, yes. Going for like that kind of speak. Mm-hmm. Where, you know, like when Adam's talking with the group in the jail cells, and he's saying words like bench, they don't know what he's talking about, you know, like shit like that.
Starting point is 00:18:37 So when they start having skeletor using modernism, language, and dialogue for the awkward humor, balls. Yeah. Like that's why the joke about the sword between your legs is like, that works. Because that sounds like a thing that person from that world would say. Definitely. But when he starts saying stuff that doesn't sound like from our. world and you could see the telegraph like this is supposed to be funny yeah yeah yeah kind of like the
Starting point is 00:19:06 you know really obvious joke when tila and duncan are hugging and then adam comes in like the actually we've seen that kind of joke done so many times felt like a joke well yeah we've seen that kind of joke done a billion times uh and a lot of times that can be really funny i remember ant man uh does that oh yes with uh with hank pym and evangeline lily and then he interrupts and he's like that's a great moment you guys are at like yeah it's a fun it's fun it can be funny it's a thing that's a done a much but then the execution here right yeah it wasn't particularly um funny but it's like i don't know i can i'm getting a little admittedly this apartment is like un weirdly self-conscious about the way i'm talking because i don't know what the audience like i'm
Starting point is 00:19:48 aware that there's there's fucking masters of the universe fans and the last thing i want to do is like shit on someone's good time because i'm not like offended by this experience and i i i just The thing that just sucks for, I think, for all of us, is that the first hour, I would say, close to first hour, really sold us on a great experience we could be having. And it just didn't, it just started to dip in the next hour and 15 minutes. This is a unique movie that falls into that category in a lot of ways. It's like it's got great work and intend to cross.
Starting point is 00:20:29 the board and there's so much almost. It's like it's so, it almost nails so many things. It nails a handful of them and everything is like charming to some degree. But once you get to the end, you're like, ah! If you could have balanced, it's like the quirkiness of the humor is actually
Starting point is 00:20:45 kind of neat. So if you could have balanced that, maybe left out some of the more overtly jokey stuff and then yeah, kind of tempered this because, you know, it's hard to translate directly one to one what he man is, but this is actually like a very valiant effort to do so. in a way that makes sense to now
Starting point is 00:21:01 that also pays homage and you know the only thing they do that's sort of like of the now that I think people disagree heavily on it's a small thing but the whole like recontextualizing all the names as they're not their real names it's just what he used to call them but even that like is a better version of that
Starting point is 00:21:16 than I've seen in a lot of stuff that's true it does still work out there's a lot of good work and a lot of like stuff that almost comes together and that's the drag how did you guys feel about like the commentary they're trying to do because it seems like the modern take on like whether it be pronouns or even like you mentioned about like
Starting point is 00:21:32 out of body kind of acceptance or whatever and and or or like that type of masculinity. Yeah, all that stuff. It seemed like it was it almost got there for me. Like it was like I can I get where you're going.
Starting point is 00:21:49 I can appreciate it but it didn't like strike an extreme chord if that makes sense. No. No. And this is not a and there was Not even in the first 45 minutes was this a movie that I felt like was trying to sell me on the significance of that. You know, like I think it was a little cherry on top. Sure. Okay.
Starting point is 00:22:07 A little themes is more of what I felt like they were doing. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, for example, like Barbie, it seems like the themes are a big part of what you have to take away with this experience. Yes. And what they're, the commentary. I got, to me, commentary is just a little, little thing that you can derive from it in a little bit surface, that it would be fine. in an experience like this, not something particularly deep. But yeah, I think it could have hit harder if they even leaned.
Starting point is 00:22:35 It was like, it was a weird thing to me when they would talk about like a Duncan saying, you know, like, I don't really know how to talk about my feelings. Whenever he did, I was like, you seem like you know how to talk about. Yes. That's his stuff. So it was like, you're talking about masculinity and like, well, here, this world, we don't do that. But it seems like you're doing it pretty well. Whenever you're in a conversation to do it. This is, again, it's that kid you know could have aced this assignment.
Starting point is 00:23:00 You're like, I love the themes that they put in here. I think it's a good place to be like, you know, what is power? How do you wield it? The whole protector versus attacker and the whole, you know, you talk until you can't get anywhere with that. Then you pull your fist. Like, there's so much good thematic work that they didn't have to put in here. And yet it is kind of a jumble of, it just kind of pops up here and there.
Starting point is 00:23:23 Especially when he's, it's like, it was so obvious. where it was going, like literally said the whole thing out loud when he was with the fucking Marina Bacheran about now he's going to realize like the powers within and all that. And but then when he says it
Starting point is 00:23:40 to a skeletor of like, I just don't like to use the, I don't like to use the power because like I understand what they're saying. Yes. Does it power have to have that responsibility. And like I don't, I didn't get a sense at all
Starting point is 00:23:53 that this was any part of the journey when he says that line. That's supposed to be like a drop on the character. Right. And, like, a moment. And I was going, wait a minute. Where was this in the entire experience? What are you talking about here?
Starting point is 00:24:07 It's not defined enough because it's not like he ever goes too far and learns it the Peter Parker way or just keeps this as a steadfast. Like, it's kind of there. But yeah, it's not strongly highlighted throughout as like a thematic element of his character. True. Yeah, someone who has his power can use it or like, I think when he accidentally drops the rocks on it, the rubble on his father. That was the thing of like, oh, your axe of,
Starting point is 00:24:29 the power within you can be out of control. Yet, didn't, yeah, it was just like a little bit mixed. And I'm seeing, John, I was here. There's four screenwriters. And it's really specifically credited. It's Chris Butler. And then there's the word and.
Starting point is 00:24:47 Right. And then there's three different names. And so it's like, clearly Chris Butler wrote this shit. And then they were like, get three other people start reworking this shit a bunch. And we got all other story buys as well.
Starting point is 00:25:02 We're slightly overlapping, but different too. Yes, yes. And it feels like that in execution. And all things considered, like, I don't feel like it's a jumbled tone. I think the tone is consistent. And while the pacing and energy can definitely dips,
Starting point is 00:25:19 I think that comes down more to the actual script that they have here. True. So, yeah, I think that's mainly the problem. But as far as like Travis Knight, I was like, you know, he fucking does, dude, get direct action. Holy shit. Hell yeah, he can. And then tell he's an animator.
Starting point is 00:25:33 Yeah, and at first, uh, 45 minutes, I was really impressed with the direction of the story. They were, they were going with it. And then in the finale, it had a couple of moments that really sung for me, you know, and yeah, it's about it, man. It's about it. It's like weirdly
Starting point is 00:25:49 super strong first half. Yeah. And then, uh, and then, like a mediocre, pretty predictable like hour 15 minutes yeah it's strange it is a little strange yeah but it is not it's something that
Starting point is 00:26:04 will probably not get a sequel because of how bad this did at the box office sure i thought have you haven't seen the dungeons and dragons movie have you honor among thieves no but i i get that it's kind of in a similar position yeah maybe with a stronger reception than this right have you seen it i have yeah it's like that was what i thought this experience might be right because that movie failed at the box office badly and didn't have the greatest trailers.
Starting point is 00:26:29 But man, is that a great film? It is so entertaining. It's such a surprise. Surprisingly cool and hilarious. It is a great time. And that's what the first 45 minutes we're doing for me. It's like, holy shit. We got another one on our hands.
Starting point is 00:26:48 This is going to get a following video. 10 years from now, people are going to love this movie. Or like when it's discovered on digital or streaming, people are going to love this and I don't see it quite being that very well could be wrong I could see this being a movie that's defended 10 years from now absolutely
Starting point is 00:27:03 but I'm talking about within the next like six months to a year I don't see it getting like a big resurgence despite you know some like Adam is great Indersalva Scalator surprise yeah that's about it guys
Starting point is 00:27:19 definitely that's all we got for today we want to see like uh you know I would like to see the I'll rotting tomatoes on this, though, before we head out. Get it. Get it. Let me check this shit out. What do you think it's going to be, John?
Starting point is 00:27:31 Rodden Tomatoes, a critic score? Probably in the 60s? Okay, you. All right, fine, I'll go 70s just because I'll say something different. I believe I know what the critic score is. I have no clue what the audience score is. Yeah, that's the one I don't know. You're probably right, John.
Starting point is 00:27:52 It's 99. So, yeah, let's find out from these verified users. Oh, 60s. Actually, I thought it was 73. I was going to say 67 is actually like a right around. Almost exactly the score. 86% out of 5,000. For audience?
Starting point is 00:28:08 It was like a B plus. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Masters of the universe. Let's see what the cinema score was. This will tell us what the fans really thought. B. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it's about what I give it.
Starting point is 00:28:20 Yeah, I agree. It's not terrible. We're not too far off. I was like, man, I really hope we're not, like, pissing off fucking,
Starting point is 00:28:27 I know, I know we're not supposed to care about those things, but I do, you know? Sure. I meet a lot of people who watch this channel.
Starting point is 00:28:34 As long as I feel bad. Sure. When I'm talking with them, and, like, oh, you know, I feel like totally shit on that experience. Magic you thought I would love it, but I didn't.
Starting point is 00:28:43 You know? Right, right. From the fake amount, I can gather, there are Masters of the Universe fans who don't necessarily love, I haven't heard anybody get very strongly opinionated
Starting point is 00:28:52 about, this in one way or another i've heard people say it's actually pretty fun i've heard people say it's not as good as it could have been true no one seems pissed no so well here we are guys what did you guys think about it those who are watching leave your thoughts down below glad we could do it anyway uh we'll see you guys soon peace by the power of grace go
