Starting point is 00:01:02 Do you have anything to say before we watch this, John? I mean, I feel like I'm ready. I'm ready, too. I miss musicals being a thing, man, in Hollywood. Let's go. Bring them back. Okay, we're ready. We're going to watch Mean Girls.
Starting point is 00:01:20 Oh, my goodness. Golly gracious. That was so fun. I'm so glad we got to share that. That was a blast and a half. Like, shut up. up like i also like that's what i was going to say i love the set design in this the playing with like the colors especially during party revenge that's my favorite i want to live there all of those
Starting point is 00:01:41 colors they just immediately make me happy and i love how they play with the lights especially when regina gets in her like uh where she's left alone it all like turns red and i really like the way that they played with the lights in that as well as throughout everything else but to to sync up a musical with like long shots like this. I mean, it's just like, I can't imagine. I'm so curious as to how long it would take them to do one of those shots. I realize, yes, there are probably hidden cuts in there. But those hidden cuts have to be like very obviously hidden where you have to go against like a wall or against some sort of object.
Starting point is 00:02:21 And there's a lot in that where they're not, right, where it's just them. dancing and the camera is moving. I mean, there's one where they go from the cafeteria through the hallway all the way outside for that one girl's song, and they don't cut the entire time. And I have just so much respect for the cinematography in this and the direction and the way that they put it together.
Starting point is 00:02:45 I'm like, hats off to you guys. Bravo. Hats off, absolutely. And hey, hats off to any of you guys who decide to give us five stars or a positive rating on Apple or Spotify, wherever you might be listening to this five stars to the folks who made
Starting point is 00:03:00 this video possible. No, I completely agree. There's so so much here that I was just enthralled by. I love a good musical. I'm not an expert. I haven't seen every stage production there is to see and I haven't seen every musical movie there is to see. However, I do love
Starting point is 00:03:17 this format and this type of story and the amalgamation of arts and creativity that it can encompass. So, yeah, like oftentimes, especially, I feel like recently, a lot of the musical movies and adaptations have been some of the bigger, more momentous stuff where it's either really high concept or it's historical in some way. Right. And, and, you know, it's every time I'm watching these things, there are little bits and pieces that I'm looking for. And this had so much of what I really enjoy because there was so much like real choreography and real thought going into both how.
Starting point is 00:03:56 the ensemble is moving how the leads are moving how the song is working into the scene and then how the camera the choreography of the blocking of all that stuff is accentuating it and you know i've seen certain musical movies where you know i'm sitting there going like come on like give me a wider shot i want to see the i want to see everybody really you know throwing down on this and really bringing it to life and i thought yeah this had such a wonderful synthesis of again it's got to be a movie and justify its moviness, but also it needs to be a rousing musical too. And I thought, yeah, the way that they started it out, yeah, with that sort of transitioning through different aspect ratios and different settings and locations and the way that they used the visual style
Starting point is 00:04:40 and language of, you know, high school and screens and, you know, the constant chatter of social media just to intercut with things. Like, I thought this was just like a really polished piece, you Like metaphorically speaking, I feel like I watched the movie version of somebody walking up on stage and just like nailing, you know, like a banger of a song with like a great belt, you know. There's nothing more satisfying than like seeing someone really hit the note. And I felt like that a lot during this. Yeah, right. And the thing is I was trying to think if I really would remember, I do remember a song, the event party. because I feel like I loved all of these songs in here.
Starting point is 00:05:21 My one thing that I was thinking was that the girls' songs, they're all in a higher kind of like mid to upper soprano. They all have like an airy tone to them. And I kind of was like, oh, what if we played with more like bigger differences in between the character's song because it all felt, not all of it, it all felt in this similar genre versus I was like,
Starting point is 00:05:45 oh, it would have been really fun to see different. different genres with the different characters, which we did with him and the girl at the top. They got like kind of a punky rock. Like I loved every time she sang because it was in a different kind of like lower register tone and had a type of vibe versus the rest of them. Oh, you could be really hot. You change like everything. Oh no. That's it.
Starting point is 00:06:10 Damn. They're coming for us next, Tara. Oh my goodness. Coming for us, Tara. Oh, my goodness. I'm scared. I am. I don't think I want it.
Starting point is 00:06:18 I kind of want to see what they would make me into. Right? But, you know, I don't know if it'll be good. Yeah. Just so that we could, like, take a picture of it and then just, like, burn the picture right after. Yeah, because I didn't get to live this kind of experience. Me neither.
Starting point is 00:06:33 I lived on the fringe in the margins between social groups. Yeah, right? And the sort of weird catch-all place between, like, I can walk through a couple of these. A couple of these I'm not very welcome in. Yeah. Yeah. But, yeah, like, too, just as a translation, like, it's been a minute since either of us has been in high school, I assume. I was there, like, last week, John, I mean, look at my face.
Starting point is 00:06:56 I'm so young. Jeez. To think that your parents dropped you off here to film today. I know, right? We got to get you out before, what, eight hours or something? I got to go home and do my homework. Are legal minors allowed to work? But, no, yeah, we're, too many years.
Starting point is 00:07:14 yes ands to count. Too many, me and John. Well, what I was saying before is that some of the songs sounded similar a little bit to me, but I still really liked all of the songs. There was something that was happening in one or two of them. It reminded me of Frozen. My friends have kids, and I was watching Frozen recently, and I was like, oh, the tone and the song, and a couple in here reminded me of Frozen.
Starting point is 00:07:39 But I was trying to think, like, oh, if I thought of this movie, would I remember remember a song and I do the revenge party which is good because if you remember one then you're like they got me I feel like that's a part of especially nowadays that's kind of a big question mark I am certainly kind of aware of in any musical experiences sort of how is the music complimenting like the immediate moment and then will I remember anything will these stand the test of time will I come out with a melody or something like that in my head and yeah revenge party absolutely and there and there were moments you know like throughout this where at least certain songs as bolstered by, again, the lighting or, you know, like there's the Halloween
Starting point is 00:08:20 party bit. And they do work in like a certain amount of modern song styling that, you know, veers into pop and R&B hip hop trap, things of those kinds of sounds. It makes me wonder, to your point, like, if this had been made as a musical, like, in an earlier era of time when there was a different landscape in terms of what genres of music were most popular, you might have heard, like, if this was more in Meyer or our kind of general high school era, I feel like you would have had more of like, oh, here's a rock tune, here's a hip-hop tune, here's a R&B tune, here's a classic musical jazz number
Starting point is 00:08:56 or something like that. And I don't begrudged this out. Like, I think the unity of what it is makes sense for, you know, again, for this era and for the fact that, yeah, their high school kids were dealing with a certain social and aesthetic sphere, so to speak. And I think this did a nice job of, you know, there's certain moments from the original movie that you have to honor. You have to go Glenn Coco. You have to have to have the bus hitter.
Starting point is 00:09:19 You have to, you know, have the burn book. You have to have, you know, October 3rd and Wednesdays we were pink and stuff like that. Yeah. And I thought they did a nice, you know, they checked those boxes with gusto. And I think there are a couple things that didn't necessarily get ported over. So, you know, I like that they kind of picked and choose when to do that and chose when to do that. And yeah. Yeah, I feel like this to me, again, having not the greatest, you know, freshest recollection of the original movies experience, this took the things I remember about that and what I remember being so great about that. And then, yeah, made just a really fun and, like, it fully embraced the assignment.
Starting point is 00:09:56 I agree. And that's what I had so much fun with is I thought everybody was on point. Like I thought Angry Rice was a great actor to portray both I believe you as a mousy, shy, awkward girl. and then I also believe you when you've turned into the thing that you've been sort of. Yeah, exactly. And I mean, Renee Rapp, killing it. Yeah. The incidental casting. And having Tina Faye and Tim Meadows back is always a joy.
Starting point is 00:10:24 Tim Meadows is a treasure. And no one plays like a dejected guy who's just trying to get through the day. Yeah. Yeah. So, yeah. And just, yeah, like the casting of, oh, God, what are their names? Janice? And the two of them, I love them so great.
Starting point is 00:10:41 They were my favorite. Yeah, absolutely. Our little shepherds through the movie are narrators and her, you know, her two little good angel demon characters kind of guiding her along. And I like the way that it, again, I don't remember exactly the way the original movie goes about articulating the theme. But yeah, the way they handled the sort of like, well, you know, let's all look around, especially in a high school scenario. It's not going to solve every problem, subtextually speaking. But in this case, I thought it was nicely handled that they did that. You know, look around.
Starting point is 00:11:14 How many of you have had something said about you behind your back? Now, how many of you've done that exact same thing? And watching them confront and deal with... There was just so many things that I forgot were supposed to happen. And then I was like, oh, yeah, that's right. The burn book has to come out. And this is going to unlock, like, a whole passage of the story, basically. And the way they handled the real aspects along with the character story arcs that we know have to happen.
Starting point is 00:11:36 along with music, along with, you know, the production of everything. I just thought everything was really nicely harmonized and pitched and, you know, again, well-rounded. Like, this just felt really smooth. Hello, there, esteem viewer of The Real Rejects. I, Greg Alba, language connoisseur, and worldly gentlemen. I'm here to bestow upon you the secrets of Babel. Starting point is 00:13:23 We shall not just learn no, nay. We shall conquer the world of communication. Or as they say in Spanish, communication. we're done with this ad i agree and like you were saying like from the original movie that was probably one scene that kind of came flying back to me was that when they all raised their hands and they threw the trust fall and they're like she doesn't even go here yes which i think is just it's so funny i mean this the the original mean girl script is just is freaking hilarious and i'm so glad that all of the punchlines and the jokes that were in that as well as the
Starting point is 00:13:59 heartfelt moments like when she breaks the tiara i'm like that is such a good like writing move it's such a like that's so smart like i i adore that about this script and and i love that that's how it ends because she doesn't need to say a lot of words during that speech she could have said a lot more than just i hurt my friends and i'm sorry but it's the it's the metaphor of like her breaking that is breaking her old self the crappy self that she became and she even looks to the plastics and to her real friends when she's doing it and as she hands that out there's no real words needed it's just her showing this is who i am and i forgot who i am along the way and that's what brings her and the guy back together again without words
Starting point is 00:14:49 he just sees her on stage you can see it in his face of like oh this is kind of the girl that i think i knew when she first came in she changed along the way and again Again, we didn't need a big speech or a big conversation between them and her saying, sorry, it was just her actions that showed it. And I adore that because there's not a ton of exposition really in this film. Maybe, sure, in some parts, but not really. It's more just showing you, not in the way that you get annoyed, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:19 Which is really great. It just showed us that at the end, which you don't need a lot of word for. And I adore that in a script. Like, that's my favorite kind of thing. Yeah, well, and I mean, these are all made by people who are older than this age. So when something like this rings, feels spiritually like it's ringing some kind of true in terms of just how everybody talks to each other and delivers information and how stuff travels because this is a, you know, the microcosm of a society for which, you know, word travels and there's double speak and people are always kind of conniving in one way or another based on social hierarchy or whatever it is. And so, yeah, it's like, you know, I thought they utilized all that. to deliver information and also rouse, you know, emotion.
Starting point is 00:16:03 Like I was caught up in the joys of this in, you know, the more bloodthirsty elements of this. And there were moments that got me a little bit misty-eyed and got me kind of back into those shoes of being, yeah, in a big, you know, social food chain and being, you know, nervous about your place in it, you know, I thought it, yeah, I thought it had a nice blend of sage hindsight, obviously, but also, you know, paying, you know, genuine, not respect, but just honoring that experience, you know, that everybody goes through to something. Like taking you there and making it, you feel it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:40 And I mean, the only, like, only minor nitpicks I would have is just like, you know, Jenna Fisher and John Hammer, great performance. I love seeing them, you know, could have used a little, it would have been fun to see a little bit more of them. I agree. Especially because you have the whole, like, if you have sex, you will get pregnant and die. Yeah. original which might be an example of a joke that would be a little too much for today for this or for
Starting point is 00:17:02 the cut or whatever like even thinking back on it now I'm like I don't know where I really would have put that and you don't really need to do it right so yeah you know for the most part hats off like this is kind of as good as I could have hoped for yeah I agree I don't know why on Amazon Prime it only has three stars I would love to know what the discourse on this is yeah I would love to know if maybe it's just people who maybe they don't like the music or I don't know maybe they they wanted everything from the script to come back and they didn't know it was going to be a musical I have no idea but the way that this the set design the lighting the camera moves like those shots take so much time everyone was really really good I didn't ever for a second not believe an actor and
Starting point is 00:17:48 you guys know I'm honest about that because coming from an actor standpoint I don't like it if I don't believe someone. And I really believed everyone in this. Like, they did a great job casting, a great job shooting this, and I'm just like, the long shots in this are my favorite. And I had a lot of fun. Yeah, I would love to see more stuff that has the spirit and the, the clear, again, embracing of the musical movie assignment as this does. Yeah. I feel like this is, again, old Hollywood musical used to be just like a prominent genre. And I feel like now it's often, Yeah, it's either got to be like it's got to be Wonka or it's got to be some, it's got to be Le Miz or cats or something like that. And granted, this is based on a book and a movie and all sorts of and a stage.
Starting point is 00:18:34 You know, it's based on stuff. But I loved the tradition that this was in as well as the way it articulated it for the here and now. You know, as far as a musical movie made in 2023 for, I was so dazzled by again, yeah, just the amount of. The amount they put the film styling into all the rest of the performing. Yeah, God. I mean, that's so hard to do. It's already number one, so freaking hard to make a movie. But to make it like that with that sort of aesthetic and the artistic quality
Starting point is 00:19:07 when you talk about camera and rehearsals and people moving at the right time and swing arounds and then follow that person and make sure you have a focus puller and make sure this person's in focus. I mean, that is just, it's just a lot, you guys. It's a lot. choreograph the actor, then you've got to do the whole thing with the steady cam and figure the lights and shit. And if one person drops the line in that long shot, you got to go back to one, baby. I bet they had some long days on here.
Starting point is 00:19:34 And they even got meta in that one bit about like, we were dragging during revenge party. I love that. They're like very much for theater kids, I think, in this movie. And I also love like how it began in the garage with them is exactly where it ended. Yeah, perfect. And then that closing shot of the door is. like bravo man like the little details in this i i adore i mean great great job i don't know why it has three stars i'd give it like four and a half because i had i had a blast like it's not
Starting point is 00:20:03 perfect there my one little critique was like oh maybe i wanted one or two songs to be in there to be a little different maybe with the girls but i still really they all were still different but they still caught me with things like even if the genres didn't vary as much they would give a character, a song I wasn't expecting. Like the little Gretchen song in the closet with the box. Exactly. Or the Karen mo.
Starting point is 00:20:28 Like I love the Karen floats above everything. And she does the Halloween world piece song. Totally. Yeah. Even though there could be more sonic variation, I think they still make clever choices with the music. And they had, you know, people Skype. I think that must have been like people submitting footage.
Starting point is 00:20:45 Right. This just felt, yeah, like so joyous of spirit. Yeah. And like really thought out. I wonder if they storyboarded out this whole thing exactly how they were going to shoot it because there are so many, there's just a lot of moving parts in this and they did a really great job, especially with those transitions. You have to know ahead of time, like how you're going to transition different shots.
Starting point is 00:21:07 And I'm so curious to know if they had sketched this or storyboarded out the whole thing prior to shooting it. But I mean, I'm saying like seven and a half out of 10 on IMDB, I had a bled. I had a blast. I loved it. Great casting. Go eight, eight and a half, man.
Starting point is 00:21:24 Get it. Get it. I'll go nine. Yeah, bro. Get it. I don't. For joy. I mean,
Starting point is 00:21:30 for just pure joy, it's like a 10, you know, if I have to get critical, you know, again, not a heap ton of stuff comes to mind.
Starting point is 00:21:37 But, you know, it's a solid eight, I would say confidently for me. Yeah, okay. I love that. I mean, I think that's it. I don't really have any other thoughts
Starting point is 00:21:47 with this except that I had a blast oroni. I loved watching this. If they made another one, I would be like, sign me up. Let's be in it. Like, let's please cast me. Yes. Cast a bitch.
Starting point is 00:21:58 Come on now. Do you have anything else to say, John? Any last thoughts? Just that I want to hear the people's thoughts now. Yeah, right? You guys got to don't forget to comment. Let us know what you thought. Tell us how cool we are.
Starting point is 00:22:12 Don't forget to get your t-shirts at rejignation shop.com. We love you so much. We adore you. Leave all the comments. like, share all the things, and we will see you on the next one. Love you so much. All the costumes were good too. Bye.
