Starting point is 00:01:04 More on them in just a bit. Got anything else to tell the people before we get our minds, you know, blown? I don't think you should let me speak anymore. Nah, nah, you should only be the one who speaks. Between the two of us, we could probably get one average mind. So with that, we got you, Mega Mind. We got you, Mega Mind. We're on your tail. Oh, goodness, gracious me.
Starting point is 00:01:36 Are there more of these? I don't know. I maybe there's a sequel. I'm not sure. There should be. I very much enjoyed our time spent on this world. That script was sick. That was really fun and tight.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Yeah. And certainly it's funny, like the further we get into just like the superhero age of cinema. Like this is, you know, what, 13-ish years old now? And like this is a great, you know, send. up of those dynamics, but also like a clever twist on a superhero, super villain, anti-hero kind of story. And clearly still paying homage to the comic books. Like, just there's so much love in this for the superhero genre and specific, I mean,
Starting point is 00:02:16 there's that penguin reference. There's obviously a lot of Superman stuff going on in this. There's just so much fun, but I was shocked with how, maybe I shouldn't have been a surprise with how well-written this was. This is really tight. Yeah, so tight. So tight. And it played, it's funny, because it, you know, in an animated movie setting,
Starting point is 00:02:35 I imagine that you probably have a good amount less latitude to just do improvving. But I felt like, and I, you never know with each individual production, but I feel like a lot of American animated productions probably shoot, record the voices first, basically, and then finish the animation to the voices. So like there's some room for improv because you have all these actors who are pretty good at improv, at least Will Ferrell, certainly, and Jonah Hill, these guys who are known for Tina Faye, Tina Faye, absolutely improv.
Starting point is 00:03:05 So the fact that you have so many people who have that in their skill set and who I bet could bring a little bit of their own flavor to this, yeah, the pacing and the plotting and the, you know, just like the dialogue flourishes and, yeah, the different knowing send-ups and twists on comic book
Starting point is 00:03:22 tropes and stuff like that where, yeah, just like really nice and choice. And it's like, I could imagine there be some improv in here, but I can also imagine it just all being on the page, you know, and I like that the line there isn't very clear because the thing just worked in and of itself. I just love all the messages of this. Like, number one, when you're not getting enough attention for being good, being bad doesn't actually make sense. Like by the end you see, it's not the right choice to just act out and be bad. It's always best to be the best version of yourself. That's what
Starting point is 00:03:57 will help you get the girl. That's what will help you live a happy life. And you shouldn't do it for those reasons. But the best life you can live is by being the best version of yourself, not the worst version of yourself. And then I really do. I know I pointed this out a couple of times. I know the internet gets so annoyed when you overuse the word insult. And I understand. But I do feel like that in 2011, this movie was really taking a shot at commentary saying, like, listen, they tried to make this guy, this guy who was like a little frumpier looking. for an animated character or whatever. He likes her and she doesn't not like him
Starting point is 00:04:31 because of how he looks. Because then when he gets all muscular and big and whatever, she still doesn't like him because she just doesn't view him that way. And that's totally fine. And she did it respectfully. She was so kind to him. And he turns into a villain and goes scorched earth
Starting point is 00:04:48 because of this one girl didn't like him. And there's plenty of fish in the sea, baby. Just stay good. Stay on your course. You'll find somebody who does like you for you. and you go on the inside. But I just thought that that was so smart because this is an animated movie.
Starting point is 00:05:02 It is not just for kids, but it is also for kids and for people to see. Like, you know, that's not cool. Well, yeah. I mean, the funny thing is I was sitting here thinking about it because, yeah, there's so much obviously that is, you know, fun and lighthearted
Starting point is 00:05:16 and that's, as we've said, in the spirit of comics and comic book movies and all that. But there are these, like, fascinatingly kind of, yeah, these flourishes that have a bit more, like, messaging and relevance than you would expect. I mean, look at the prologue of the movie. If you really want to, like, kind of, I'm not saying that this movie is making a deep statement about this stuff.
Starting point is 00:05:39 But if you look at the prolog of the movie, you have two escape pods from these, like, dying universes. These two refugees are sent to Earth. And the one who's like a charming white dude gets, like, lands in the rich house. He gets the best education while the blue kid is over here, just trying to get by. This was Canada versus Mexico. We all know. I mean, kind of, because then at the beginning, it is that nature versus nurture thing where he's like trying his best and he's making these interesting little things. But people are ignoring him.
Starting point is 00:06:08 They're not giving him any support and they are, you know, not ever encouraging the good that he does do. And it makes sense why he would then turn. And that could be any kid in the position of, yeah, like maybe I'm a little bit different and maybe people don't know how to interact with me. And thus, I'm getting left behind essentially. Yeah. And that's an easy road to choosing, well, if I get the most results and I get something out of, you know, bad what people will call bad behavior, then I'm going to turn into that then because clearly, you know, the people around who are pretending to be so good as they say
Starting point is 00:06:42 or whatever aren't. And yeah, it's like you can sympathize for how he got this way. And then the question of, yeah, is it genetic or is it, you know, what you choose? And there's like a little bit of the genetic side, but most of it. It is just, yeah, what you choose and what you allow yourself to become and how self-aware you are. And I, yeah, like, there were so many versions of this I could see while watching it that would have been just as fun. But like... But not as deep.
Starting point is 00:07:08 Yeah, it's weird. It's like this was just the right amount of everything. It's like it's got enough of these little details where you're like, I bet somebody was kind of, yeah, putting some knowing little details from actual life into this. But then also it's not being like ham-fisted or it's not, you know, like soap. boxing at you and it makes it pretty clear just by who the character of howl is you know you're like oh no i don't think this is the right guy to get the like even if you're a kid watching it you could just probably see him and go like i don't think this is the right guy to get the bow yeah yeah totally you know another lesson that was so interesting and i'm going so deep here and i will i will go a little
Starting point is 00:07:43 more surface level on a second after but another thing that i sentiment that i really loved here is when roxan who thought was a great character not just because of her name but there's this one moment where they're out to dinner and he and she says i would never judge you on any of those things i only would judge you on your actions sure and i do think that one of the things that we like to say in society nowadays is i oh i this is a judgment free zone i'm i don't judge people i'm a very non-judgmental and here are the things we shouldn't judge people by their race their age their sexual orientation there's so many things we shouldn't here's what we should judge here's what we should judge people based on their actions yeah i think it's totally more than appropriate to judge somebody
Starting point is 00:08:27 based on what they do and today we always are like we don't judge anybody and it's like that if you're gonna judge somebody it should be based on their actions and i feel like that was really strong messaging again here where like sometimes and maybe it's because i just listened to you and greg on um diary of a real reject which i thought was an amazing interview but kind of just talking about your upbringing a little bit more and like what a beautiful person I think you are now because who what happens to you when you're a kid there are bullies all of the time I pulled up a diary of your mind that I'll show you about me being bullied at the same age but what happens when you're a kid you I have better not bitter tattooed on my shoulder for a reason because you don't get to just
Starting point is 00:09:09 then live the rest of your life as a villain because when you're a kid something happened so we saw mega mind people were not choosing him first in gym class people were not treating him well And he kind of feeds into and leans into that. But there is another way. And it's to like grow up and still remain the best version of yourself. And I'd like to think that those are the people who win. And at the end of the day, he chooses to be good. And that's when people start really respecting him.
Starting point is 00:09:34 It's like. Yeah, he chooses a different path of action. Right. A different course of action. Instead of just being like, oh, well, because I came here and these horrible things happened to me, now for the rest of my life, I'm going to treat people like dirt. Like, that's not the right way. Yeah, that's the experience.
Starting point is 00:09:49 excuse rather than like really taking responsibility for what you can affect of your own circumstances or i guess it's the worst version of taking some responsibility for that and yeah it's it's that outward blaming versus like you know what yeah things outside of me aren't necessarily working out but i'm going to do the best i can to chart a good course forward based off of what i really want you know rather than what i'm bitter about i think that's great actually better better not bitter is a great mantra and he got there because it's yeah well and it's super easy like you know growing up like and going through different levels of school and coming of age like you know you see a little bit of everything and i remember seeing people who would have that experience you know and it's and it's hard
Starting point is 00:10:29 and you know and when you're experiencing you know when people are bullying you or or just not supporting you or neglecting you in some way as a young as a child or as a young person like it's hard because you know life is a balance it's nature and nurture there's a certain amount of guidance and there's a certain amount of influence that you do kind of need. And that's always going to be a conundrum. But, like, that's the thing is I would see, like, growing up people who would have very similar stories to me, but everybody would end up different ways. And you would see certain people kind of turn into a bully or adopt that mentality themselves
Starting point is 00:11:05 after experiencing it firsthand for so long. And it's a really easy, I think, thing to succumb to. But, yeah, it is something that always struck me. oh damn you know like if i remember what it was like and that was not fun and i don't want to give that to anybody and i think that's that's the thing it's that's the bit it's it's it's really that it's like you can suffer but not get bitter or at least find ways of dealing with that and letting go of it or you can you know let that bitterness build you know and i feel like that was all here like in this beautiful light funny um quippy dialogue movie yeah there were really layers
Starting point is 00:11:44 about when that's why they started us back then you know they the the on purpose didn't start us with megamind in his as an adult they took us back and they showed us how we got here um and it you know what do they say like just because you can understand something doesn't justify it you know it explains it doesn't justify it it explained why he is the way he is but it didn't justify it and then he made this switch and and i think a lot of that had to do with roxanne's kindness towards him too um yeah just wow i think that this movie really nailed it it also nothing for nothing looked really cool they really thought about this city the music was bumping i mentioned this during there but like i'm a rock just like you we're children of rock and roll i love rock and roll it's my by far
Starting point is 00:12:31 in a way the genre that speaks to me most we get so many animated movies with pop which pop is so fun but you don't you don't uh you don't always get these rock and roll beginning middle and end movies this whenever music was happening and certainly there's a bias because yeah like it's music that appeals to us and it's fun to see the contrast but yeah like i'll see a lot of animated movies that'll have a pop interlude and even if the songs all right there will often create this just reaction to me where i'm like oh okay now we will break for the pop music interlude that you know i'm often hearing those things and mean like yeah i get why this is here but i don't think it was necessarily like this isn't the choice i would have made whereas here i'm like
Starting point is 00:13:11 the music like complimented the movie it felt like it really did and i was stoked on that and then just like i had mentioned during this you know this came out in uh 2010 or 20 i thought it said 2011 um but maybe 2010 if you are a kid who's 10 years old maybe this is what introduced you to acdc or guns and roses yeah that's cool yeah like then you hear the car and uh in this uh the song in a car and you're like that's the song in mega mine song And that's, that is, you know, that's badass. That's how we keep rock and roll alive. And choosing the right moments to use those things because if the music is working and compliment to what's happening, it'll be like, yeah, oh, like back in black or whatever kicks in.
Starting point is 00:13:55 And it's like, oh, the fight scene's about to begin. There's some crazy imagery. Like that makes the song even cooler, makes the imagery even cooler. And that's, yeah, then you're more likely to latch on to all of those things rather than just being like, oh, there's a song happening now, you know. Yeah, absolutely. And I really enjoyed the, again, with all those other, like, nature, nurture and, you know, this, I think the chart they, the path they charted was fun and interesting because, again, yeah, superhero, super villain, the, you know, lead reporter and all that. But, like, the whole thing with Metro Man, I thought was really fun, too, and a wrinkle I never expected. Like, it seems like they took every character that they were focusing on and went, let's do something interesting.
Starting point is 00:14:37 Yes. Or like, let's give each of these just a little bit more flavor. And so to have him be like, I never got a choice in any of this. Like, yes, I excel at it. I'm good at it. But, like, I don't know. I didn't want to spend it. Like, it's funny.
Starting point is 00:14:48 It echoes what the, what Titan was saying, which is basically like, I don't, this was just like given to me. This was like thrust on me. And whereas, you know, a Metro man takes the responsibility and carries the mantle and, you know, Hal shirks it. I thought that was just like an interesting thing because, you know, he is obviously. Obviously doing the Superman type routine, Circa Elvis, which I just thought was like a really fun kind of way to play that because like he is a bit of a cheese, but also like you get why the city loves him and what, you know, kind of hero he is. But yeah, that whole thing. A, it really struck me that they, you know, faked us out with him dying at all and let us believe that for so long. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:29 And then to bring him back, I thought was great. And, and yeah, to have him not only be like, I just needed a break, man. I didn't know what to do and then I came up with this plan and like that plays so well into the earlier like it's such a great reversal because there is I've had ideas for movies where I'm like what would happen if the mastermind villain wins and there's just nothing to do now like I'm bored I got everything I wanted there's no tension and they basically did that here but yeah I love that they let you live in that for so long and then brought it back to like but of course this guy is the hero so like he's effectively undermined mega mind again. while also starting up this new life as a musician, as a music man, which I thought was just like, and he's in like an Elvis type suite. Like I just thought that was like so fun and charming. And the way they use that detail and the watch to switch, you know, your appearance and stuff like that. And yeah, having it be like, oh, you know, Metro Man came back.
Starting point is 00:16:26 Like, of course, what a triumphant moment. But then realizing, no, he's going to stay in retirement. But he's going to show up at the end to do the visual psych gag callback, but also to be there to support as... That's my guy. Yeah. Yeah, I agree. I also think that the fact that he,
Starting point is 00:16:40 we learn from Megamine that he wasn't actually trying to kill Metro Man, you know, which I think shows that there was no... That wasn't the intention. And then when we find out that he's not actually dead, it kind of clears him because otherwise you're sitting thinking to yourself
Starting point is 00:16:58 like, Roxanne can't actually be with him. He killed her person. You know, I know she says they weren't dating, but that was like her dude. her homie but then when you find out he wasn't trying to and he didn't actually do it it's like oh okay kind of clears the board for us to be like oh I could see this couple kind of working out totally and then I do really think that it is a cool again like going a little deep the fact that you don't know everybody's fighting their own demons like megamind sitting there thinking metro man has
Starting point is 00:17:27 the best life and everybody loves him and metro man is sitting there like man can I get one break like every day i got to do something for somebody i gotta be the beacon of hope for everyone yeah and so while well maga mind is thinking it would be amazing like metro man so lucky metroman is out here given his all for decades you know so he deserves a little bit of a break and i think that that was cool that they kind of showed us that too and that metroman really is rooting for megan mine yeah that's what a good guy does that's what a good like that's what an actual good human or a good you know spirited person would do is like yeah if you're on you know if you're not beyond the pale and you want to make that you know turn toward goodness like yeah I support that like
Starting point is 00:18:13 yeah and I love to like there's so many great uses of tropes and twists and things because even in that moment at first when he's in the dome he's like oh copper my my weakness and mega mine you know he's like what it is you know like yeah we were kind of like in in the moment yeah it's like It's the perfect little detail because on the one hand immediately it plays as like, oh, Megamind is like failing his way towards success. This is a classic comedy trope of like, oh, I didn't intend to do this, but I guess I won by accident. And then to come to find that that's actually not what happened is just like an even, you know, it's like that's a classic kind of joke. This like, oh, this villain who thinks he's a mastermind is secretly kind of a dunce. And like that's used across the movie in ways or he's not as, you know, brave as he per, you know,
Starting point is 00:19:01 puts out there whatever it is but yeah i thought like that was a nice way to use the trope but for something better you know for something richer and and yeah it's like you know a movie like this is such a fun like i enjoy a lot of zany animated movies and stuff like that certainly um and i can you know meet i think things partway for however deeper not they're trying to be but this was was a joy because this gave me way more things than i expected and also delivered on the thing that i expected in a way that was really fun. Yeah, I'm with you. Yeah, it's like you get the fun, you know, animated superhero adventure,
Starting point is 00:19:37 super villain adventure. But also, yeah, just like an actual clever take on this kind of material. Reject Nation. I never really consider myself a sports guy. I know so many people who are in this sports. So many people who watch this channel are into sports. My wife into sports. Sometimes it feels emasculating while she yells at the TV and I don't know what's going on.
Starting point is 00:19:55 Why that feels emasculating? That's more to do with me than her. That's for sure. But anyway, the peer pressure got. to find a way to find fun with sports and if you're looking for a fun and simple way to get into daily fantasy sports let me introduce you to prize picks it's america's number one daily fantasy app with over five million active members and honestly it's the only one i've ever used but for everyone who i know who has used fantasy sports thingies before says this is the easiest one they've ever used
Starting point is 00:20:18 my wife included and the misses is never wrong all you do is pick more or less on player stat projections like how many yards your favorite qb that's not for quarterback by the way we'll throw or how many points a star player will score. You can pick between two and six players, and if you get them right, you win. Even I can comprehend this, and I'm not the smartest guy. And like I said, it's easy to get started, and it's easy to use. A lot of emphasis on the easy. Here's one easy example.
Starting point is 00:20:42 So at the time of recording this, we just bet on Jordan Love, Jaden Reed, and Joe Burrow. Consulted with John. John knows more about sports than me. So really, this was his decision. So let's see if he take this whole operation. Or if we're filthy rich now. Great thing if one of your players ever gets injured. Price Picks has an injury insurance policy.
Starting point is 00:20:57 I could use some health insurance in my own life. So your lineups stay in play rhymes, bars, baby. And if you miss one pick, you can still cash out thanks to their unique flex play option. It's available in most states, including California, Texas, and Georgia. You can download the Price Picks app today. Use code rejects and get $50 instantly when you play just $5. There's a lot of fives in this shoutout. $5, $50, $5 million members.
Starting point is 00:21:24 It's like the number 23. But anyway, you don't even have to win to get the bonus. Isn't that awesome? Price picks, run your game. Get into Daily Fantasy Sports, like this expert over here. I'm not seeing Megamind 2 below as recommended. Does that mean this doesn't exist? This might not be.
Starting point is 00:21:40 This might be the sole outing. Do you want to regale us with some... I really would like to know more about, like, his parent. You know, there was enough here that I feel like... What did they say to it? Yeah, I know the point of a movie isn't having a sequel, but I would be curious. Well, and that's a good. good i think that's a good feeling to end something on though is that idea of like oh man i i hope
Starting point is 00:22:00 there's more to this because this is like nice enough on its own certainly oh my god maybe this is like gregg had us doing this right now megamine versus the doom syndicate 2024 let's go so they took 13 years yeah or 14 they must have an idea okay megamine former villain team doom syndicate has returned in 24 fun okay uh i don't No, no. Dang. So now he's going to have to explain his old, his new life to his old friends, maybe posture to try and impress them. I hope it's. Team up movie. Wow. Did this already come out or is it coming out? I'm trying to give you some deeds. I feel like it's got to be on its way out. It said March 1st, 2024. Did it already come out? Oh, it was panned by critics and audiences with many deeming it inferior to its predecessor.
Starting point is 00:22:51 No, no, no. Wow. It is on IMDB, a 2.3. four out of ten. Wow! I've rarely gone from so excited to so bummed out. It was so fast. Oh, boy. Oh, boy. Well, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:23:07 You guys let us know in the comment. Should we watch it? I mean, I'm down to give it a shot. But you guys tell us. Yeah, you let us know, let us know if you want that to happen. But, you know, I don't know. I guess I'll spend any time between now and the potential for then just imagining this is the only Mega Mind movie.
Starting point is 00:23:27 Wow, it's, wow, it really, let's look on Rotten Tomatoes. Oh, you've been. Yeah, yeah, oh, God. I just can't even imagine that, though. I don't know if it's the same team or not, but, like, this was so good. I want you to guess what Mega Mind versus the Doomson to get on the tomato meter. Judging by your face, what is like a, I have two numbers in mind.
Starting point is 00:23:59 I'm going with either six or 14%. Nine. Nine. But it only has 11 reviews, which is kind of confusing. Was this like a straight-to-video movie or something? I don't know. I didn't even hear that this happened. And an 8 on the tomato meter.
Starting point is 00:24:13 You can watch it on Peacock now. Was this like a straight-to-streaming or something like that? Let's see. Let me try to look. Nine is so brutal. Yeah, man. What a drop. I don't even know what this movie has. And I don't even remember this being.
Starting point is 00:24:25 like heavily lauded at the time but like certainly it seems like it's at least gained a following of of you know people just folks out there who love it and gregg i mean was certainly saying how much he really enjoyed this and thought it was hilarious so uh man it says it's available exclusively on peacock but i don't know you have to imagine if it's only uh sing like 10 people reviewing this it had to have gone straight right sure i don't know that is really truly wild it doesn't look like a single cast member returned for it okay this might be a straight to video affair straight to streaming affair but who played mega mind keith ferguson so they got like voice actors or people who are primarily voice actors yeah interesting weird weird should we subject ourselves
Starting point is 00:25:13 to this comment below i like the metro city felt like an amalgamation of various metropolis the series was kind of nice because they were, yeah, like the metrosity. The metrosity, of course. And too, like a little character detail like that, like his weird pronunciations that make things sound more villainous than they are. And that's how Jonah Hill knew it was him, which was clever too. True, yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:36 And yeah, like they did such a nice, I think a movie is working on you as a viewer when they can do something like that opening motif of like, okay, I bet you're wondering how I got here and we're going to show you the end before we get to the beginning. But I've completely forgotten about that wrap around too. Whenever we saw it, I was like, oh, yeah, we made our way back. And this is another one of those movies that, in a good way, this is only like an hour and 25 minutes. It's an hour and a half.
Starting point is 00:26:00 And this felt like a substantial movie that didn't feel too brief, nor did it drag or feel too jam-packed with anything. The different character designs I thought were fun, the inventions and the different, like, this is another movie that makes me want to go back and look for sight gags and things like that. Because there were tons, I would notice details, like, in parts of the frame that you're like, you're only going to be able to see that. for like, clearly, minus whatever motion blur for like a few frames. And yet they still put these details in. And I love, you know, that they take the care to do stuff. Totally.
Starting point is 00:26:31 Yeah, there's a part where we were downstairs with Bernard and Roxanne. And there was like all these signs behind that I was trying to read. Yeah, that pick like text. It was like a globe with text messages popping out. They were all kind of like dismayed. Or there were like freeway.
Starting point is 00:26:46 There's a scene where they go under like the freeway overpass. And you can see some of the big, you know, like exit ramp signs had like Megamind spray painted back over. Like, yeah, there's so many little flourishes and things. And just the general, you know, animation for 2010 or whatever. Not that I'm like the greatest expert, but the animation felt. Looked really good. Yeah, it looked nice. It had good textures and stuff and like cool lighting and things.
Starting point is 00:27:10 And there were a lot of really great like aerial shots of the city and stuff like that and good uses of like extreme perspective. Yeah, to be honest, this is an A plus for me. This was a bang. Yeah, like an absolute banger. I would certainly recommend this to so many different people. I'm sure they've seen it before we did. Sure. This was awesome.
Starting point is 00:27:29 Yeah. Great job. Great, great voice cast all around. Mignon was a real one. Do we have any trives or are we good to go? I mean, I was just caught up on the fact that there was 9% on the afterglow of both, yeah, joy and dismay in equal measures. That was really truly wild, though. Let me look this up for us and see if I can get you.
Starting point is 00:27:49 Yeah, anything good. Mega wild. Mega wild. Yeah, keep inventing slogans. Code slogan. Oh, the code stuff was so great. I'm curious about Tom McGrath, what else he's done. Sure.
Starting point is 00:28:04 Oh, okay, so he did Madagascar. Okay. Which I never saw. Tara and I watched the Madagascar. They're pretty charming. He did the boss baby. Have not seen the boss baby. Kids love the boss baby.
Starting point is 00:28:16 Oh, he did a Renan Stimpy thing, which I love. He did a Renan Stimpy thing. idiot um yeah okay so a lot of things like this penguins of madagascar madly madagascar marigascar escape to africa the keeper of the madagascar penguins yeah a lot of a lot of mass madagascar stuff which is cool um okay let's see what the trivia is for this well oscar nominee for um no he was for boss baby but not for this wow all right let me see wow oh yeah that's right the boss baby is an Oscar nominated movie. I didn't see it.
Starting point is 00:28:52 Was it good? I haven't seen it, too. The Megamine person was just talking to us yet again. Megamines controlling the TV now. That's crazy. Yeah, this wasn't nominated for anything, which I'm kind of surprised about. I guess I would need to know what else came out in this year.
Starting point is 00:29:08 Like, this is the kind of movie that I wouldn't expect to get any sort of awards consideration. Wow, it's a bummer. Yeah. Okay. Instead of voicing his character from within a sound booth, Brad Pitt, who, is a very active actor. Okay. It's a very active actor.
Starting point is 00:29:23 Sure. Instead of using a handheld microphone for his performance, who's a very active actor, insisted on using a handheld microphone for his performance and roaming around the studio. Wow. They must have had to get him like some massively shock absorbing, like, with really quality mics, especially like that. You can hear like every little thing when you're moving that shit around. Let me ask you this, because it kind of did pop in my mind at some point.
Starting point is 00:29:48 Um, this was originally pitched as a live action film. What do you think of that? I think the choice to go animated benefited this greatly. I could imagine it being live action, but I feel like it would be really expensive to get this to be what it is in this form in a live action setting. I think it would have been a very tall order. This is something we both obviously picked up on, but the film's plot was based on the premise, what if Lex Luthor defeated Super Ram? Sure. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:17 Yeah. Absolutely has all. I mean, you know, he's bald even. Tropic Thunder's co-stars Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. were both originally approached the role of Megamind, but turned it down due to scheduling conflicts. Instead, Stiller only appears in minor role as the curator named Bernard. I cannot imagine Robert Downey Jr. in this movie. I cannot imagine him as Megamond. Let's hear about Guillermo de Toro.
Starting point is 00:30:41 He was hired as a creative consultant three weeks before the film completed production. He majorly assisted in editing the film. to make it more exciting. Wow. What? That's fascinating. I mean, well done.
Starting point is 00:30:55 And certainly we were sitting there with certain Pacific, mentioning Pacific Rim here and there. And I mean, that's your Pacific Rim bro. So like, fascinating. Fascinating.
Starting point is 00:31:04 Good job. Well done. It shows. To promote the film, Will Farrell assembled 1,580 of his friends and their acquaintances at a superhero costume function.
Starting point is 00:31:16 This party set at Guinness record for the largest gathering of superheroes. Wow. Well done. That's a super party, super feral. So, Will Farrell has upwards of 1,500 actual friends. Apparently.
Starting point is 00:31:30 That's suspect. That's sus. After Megamine has taken over the town, his large, no you can't posters are a reference to President Barack Obama's 2008 campaign posters featuring the slogan, yes we can, which you and I picked up on.
Starting point is 00:31:44 Also something you picked up on Metro Man's persona was based on Elvis Presley. And by extension, Bruce Kay. He very much reminded me of like Bruce Campbell. Oh, I was going to say this out loud, but I never did say this out loud. Howell Stewart is named after two characters who have held the Green Lantern title, Howe Jordan, John Stewart. According to the original mastermind script, Metromand's civilian name was Wayne Scott. After two Golden Age DC comic book characters, Bruce Wayne, Batman, and Alan Scott, Green Lantern.
Starting point is 00:32:13 Although it is unknown whether or not it was changed. That is cool. That's fun. Metro City is located in Michigan. Hey. This can be clearly seen in a shot where Megamine's satellite is in orbit around the earth. Go Michigan. All right.
Starting point is 00:32:27 All right. Megamine mispronounces words 20 times throughout the movie. Most notably, Metro City is metrosity, rhyming it with atrocity. Yes. Yeah. It's a great detail. I wonder whose idea that was. If that was in the script, if that was a director thing, if that was Farrell himself,
Starting point is 00:32:42 because he's always doing that groundlings, like coming up in character kind of thing. This is funny because you brought this up during the movie. Bruce Campbell was originally considered for the voice cast of Metro Man before DreamWorks decided to cast an actor with more star power 100%. How dare you guys? That's messed up. He is Bruce Campbell. He's so Bruce Campbell. Still Campbell's face was partially used as inspiration
Starting point is 00:33:02 when designing Metrowman. Nice. Because he has that thing. He feels like Ash if Axe was actually trying to be heroic. He has that same attitude, you know. The Ark of the Covenant from Raiders of Lost Ark can be seen in Megamine's treasure room. See? That's more details. Like, ah, okay, what do you think about this?
Starting point is 00:33:20 The film was originally titled Mastermind. However, that name had already been trademarked by the makers in the 1970s board game and television show Mastermind, which was 1972. It was suggested as Obermind, a misspelling of Uber Mind, so O-O-B-E-R mind. Uber, like a goober. The word Uber refers to something that is large or great. the title character's over swollen skull and brain didn't sound right and was revised to Megabind. I think that's ultimately, I mean, that's a fun just, yeah,
Starting point is 00:33:53 you can see the progression of that and I think Megamind is ultimately the best. I mean, Mastermind is good, but I think Mastermind, I would give that title to something that's a bit more dark than this sort of, I don't know. Megamind is so fun. Yeah, Megamind, I feel like is the perfect. Like it says what it is. It says the character.
Starting point is 00:34:12 it gets you prepped for the tone you know yeah yeah totally all right that's what i got for you well heck yeah that was fun this was a blast and a half we still don't know what justin thoreau did but he was a voice i told you of one of the but he was also like a consultant yeah i don't know do he also help edit the movie yeah i can't believe gyrmo the toro for three weeks was editing this yeah well and justin thoreau was in zoolander with ben stiller and will feral as the evil DJ so part of me is like I don't know yeah maybe maybe Ben Stiller was like hey I'm gonna help out a lot though even if I'm not gonna do this movie you know I'm gonna exact produces anyway bringing a lot of people in but yes gang what did you think of the original mega mind
Starting point is 00:34:56 should we ignore the haters and check out Megamind to the the league of extraordinary gentlemen or whatever it's called there's nine reviews what is happening so let me tell us and it doesn't even pop up and it's on peacock and this is on Amazon so is it like a short Because it's like a special. We got to look into it. Enlighten us. But either way, thank you if you're still here at this point in the video for being here and enjoying this. I hope you enjoyed it as mightily as we did.
Starting point is 00:35:22 And we'll catch you for whatever's next. Ron Joxi. Out. Hey, Flev. I just wanted to say thank you for being here for so long. It's been such a long time. Flev has been a ride or die. I think that would be an accurate assessment for Flev
Starting point is 00:35:45 because he's always in our comments being extremely positive. He's always riding, if you know what I mean. What? He's always riding for us on our behalf. Not riding anything else, you know, that could be misinterpreted as anything like provocative. But even that would be, you know, him expressing his love for us. You want to, like, ruin this sincerity with your, with your weird writing.
Starting point is 00:36:15 Yeah, my weird writing. That's what I do, you know. I'm not like Flev, you know. I'm not as good as, I don't know what Flev is like. Whoa. I haven't read any of the comments. He's in Romania. I just hear that.
Starting point is 00:36:27 He's in Romania? I'm pretty sure. Aren't you Flev? I double check the country, but I think Flev's in Romania. He's pledged, right? He's pledged. Fled Pledge. Well, thanks for being here for so long, buddy.
Starting point is 00:36:40 Yeah.
