And we are here for the Thunderbolts.
We're here at Universal.
We're here at the AMC 16 in Burbank.
We don't know where we were.
That's so good.
We were in IMAX and I was so dazzled.
I thought it was the biggest IMAX in the land.
No, but seriously, this is an IMAX experience and it did delight in that form,
as I'm sure it will in any form.
But yes, Thunderbolts, the newest MCU motion picture.

And before we hop into our thoughts on the movie,
I'm just going to give a brief synopsis of the plot
after finding themselves ensnared in a death trap.
An unconventional team of anti-heroes must embark on a dangerous mission
that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts.
And that is actually a pretty solid,
logline without revealing almost anything specific.
And I think that's a good way to, as with any of these movies, it's always good to go in cold,
but I think especially, go in with only as much as you know, because this movie has some very
fun and interesting developments.
I think the coolest part of it for me was the way that it blossomed out, because at
the start of it, I was definitely really enjoying it.
The cast has terrific chemistry throughout, but once you get to about the halfway point,
it kicks into a different gear that I didn't.
Nazi coming and that I was quite enthralled by. But what did you think of the movie?
I think that if you enjoy the marketing, if that log line sounds good to you, if you liked the
trailers, if you've seen some of the social media that we did with the limo pulling up and
the, you know, all of that stuff, then this is the movie for you. I think it was perfectly
advertised. They didn't give too much away, but they made me just enough interested. I had
heard people talk about that this had to do with depression and past trauma and life choices.
does have to do with all of that but not in all of us right but not fully in the way that I expected so I
thought the story was really solid and then all of the elements coming together were amazing and
clearly we weren't the only ones because when we walked out of the theater was buzzing there were
buzzing and nobody was leaving it was like everybody was just standing in a clump and everybody wanted
to talk about it which never happens at these press screenings everybody just kind of goes home but
people wanted to discuss because it was a powerful movie yeah and it's something it's a bit of a breath of fresh
I mean, you've seen the trailer, and it's definitely going more toward that Winter Soldier side of the spectrum, certainly, and it's a place I know a lot of people want the MCU to return to, and it does have a lot of that nittier, grittier, hand-to-hand-hand-based combat with certain elements of science fiction, especially because in the core team, you do have characters like Ghost who have, you know, the phasing ability and whatnot, and, you know, to talk of the core team, I mean, the ensemble in this movie is one of the highest, you know, the most triumphant parts of it. You know, Florence Pugh,
It is an ensemble, but if there is a lead, it is Florence Pugh, and she is terrific.
She brings so much life and pathos without ever overdoing it.
If she has no fans, I'm dead because I am going to diehard.
She's queen.
She's everything.
She's amazing in this.
She is amazing in the MCU.
I feel like she is such a great addition for them.
And moving forward, I just want to see her more and more and more.
More of her and more of this team, honestly, because I really like the way she played off of Wyatt
Russell's John Walker and John Kamen as Ghost.
Obviously, David Harbour as Alexey Red Guardian is a joy to watch on screen,
but also brings some real feels to the movie as well.
And then we have to talk about Lewis Pullman.
Do we forget anybody on the team?
But there's Bucky.
And Bucky.
And Sebastian Stan, terrific as well.
Always a joy to see.
Can't take that for granted.
He's always amazing.
And he has such badass moments in this.
It's like, if you're a Bucky fan, this is for you, for sure.
I am a Bucky fan, so it's for me.
Rejignation, I think most of us want to break sometimes.
Something that lets us unplug from real-life stress.
I feel like we're doing something epic.

And Taskmasters in it too.
But Lewis Pullman.
Louis Pullman, this is the first thing I've seen.
Just to geek out over Lewis Pullman for a second.
He had a lot of heavy lifting to do in this movie.
There was a lot for him to do.
He was quite a surprise.
I was like, this guy I think is gonna win an office.
one day. Like, I think that this is an Oscar caliber actor that we are seeing. We are watching
him in the making. And I've seen him on a couple TV shows. He's been in some movies. But this is
the first time I've really seen him chew on something that I was like, oh, wow, this is a star as being
born. Yeah. And what a cool, you know, place to do that because obviously, you know, Marvel has
had their ups and downs, especially in these recent phases. But for an introduction for me to this
guy as a performer, he really made for a great centerpiece to everything.
and so much about his character, this guy, Bob, and whatever the Century program has to do with him,
was fascinating, both on a human level and on a Marvel Cinematic Universe kind of level,
and the conflicts that surround him led to moments and set pieces and just visuals that I wasn't expecting,
and that felt fresh and interesting for what Marvel has done.
Also just makes you very much appreciate within the text of the movie,
light and color and things like that, things that, things that have often.
been kind of criticized for not having enough of.
Also, real quick, just forgot to mention Julia Louis Dreyfus,
Valentina, Allegra, Dufontein, De Fontaine,
Dufontaine, however you say, Julia Louis Dreyfus, Julia Louis Dreyfus,
in rare form in this movie, and in it more than I think either of us expected.
Which is a really exciting thing because I feel like she was just living this up.
She was clearly having the most fun in every room, and I love this role for her,
and she loves this role for her.
Absolutely.
Very fun to watch.
And also, you know, deliciously slimy and dubious, morally speaking,
in all the right kind of ways.
Yeah.
And yeah, this is interesting because it started off in a place
that I was kind of expecting, given the trailer.
And then, yeah, once you get about halfway,
again, it started to arc upward into something different,
but it never fell off the rails.
It never got too big.
And it managed to solve the problem,
or at least to meet the problem.
conscientiously of how do we take these characters who are, for the most part, ground level.
They are maybe powered up, you know, John Walker, Super Soldier Serum, Ghost Can Phase and whatnot,
Alexi as well, Super Soldier Serum. But, you know, you're not dealing with gods. You're not dealing
with people who can fly. And so how are they going to stop a threat that is that sort of Superman
level kind of thing? And I think the way that they meet that question was really thoughtful.
This is a thoughtful movie, too. And I mean, yes, there is banter, there is comedy. But all that
comes from who the characters are.
And while it is a movie that I think will benefit you
for having seen all of the stuff,
I don't think you would be-
Yelena.
Yelena, John Walker.
And especially with John Walker.
I think that knowing their backstories
helps a lot with the emotional journey that we were on.
Definitely. I think you will still be able to appreciate them
because, again, the emotion they go for
with the characters, the journeys,
and just the grappling with their own lots
in life these characters go through,
contained within just the bounds of this one movie is, I think, very rich and satisfying,
especially for, again, a Marvel flick.
But yeah, it will be that much richer if you've been on the entire journey.
But what I loved was that they felt it sometimes can be tricky to put so many disparate characters
together who work in their own show, their own movie.
But now they're all coming together in another movie, and it's kind of akin to the thing
we did with the First Avengers, where it's like, yeah, these guys work on their own,
but will they all work together?
And within the text of the movie, can they work together?
And I think one thing that was lovely is that, you know, you see the idea of the Thunderbolts and you think, oh, it's a suicide.
It's Marvel's Suicide Squad.
And it did not do that.
Like it never, I went in thinking, oh, this will be kind of like a suicide squad.
And I kind of forgot that idea throughout the movie.
Like it's not a suicide squad copy or anything like that.
No, we haven't seen a Motley crew like this, not in a comic book movie.
And that's hard to do because there's been a lot of Motley crews, which I thought this made, it was a fresh take on that.
The other thing that I can't, we can't leave without me mentioning, of course, is the composer.
Oh my God, yes.
The music in this was just absolutely aces, and I tried to give John trivia, and he already knew it, which was sad.
Sun Lux, I had no idea.
Sun Lux, the last thing that they did was everything everywhere all at once, and that was amazing, and this was amazing.
The music gave me chills, goosebumps, made him tear up, made me start to tear up.
That flavor.
It was nice to get some new blood.
Yeah, new, no shade to the coterie of Marvel composers, but like, it was cool.
to see a fresh name up there.
Fresh director, fresh composer.
For Marvel, this was very different.
The crew that they brought in and the crew that we saw on screen, both different.
This seemed like a really, I was happy for the, there are some Marvel movies you walk out of,
Captain America Ford just recently.
I walked out of kind of feeling bad for the creatives involved because I'm like,
I don't think this is what you had in mind and I don't think that like the best of your talents
is represented by this.
This is clearly what they had in mind.
Exactly.
We saw what they wanted us to see.
We loved what they were hoping we would love.
It feels like, you know, from the direction on down to the acting and whatnot,
like everybody got a chance to sink their teeth in and really bring their A-game
and really put a lot of feeling into it.
And I'm really curious to see how it plays on a second viewing
because this first one, again, I was sitting there in the first half going,
okay, cool, I like this, but I want to, you know, feel it transcend.
And then at a point for me, it did.
And so now I'm excited to have that second viewing experience,
knowing what's coming and just getting to soak in the rhythms and the, you know,
vibes of it all because I think this is a movie that in its own kind of sad broken way and not in a
bad way but you know there is a lot about being sad and broken and sort of pained by the glory
that you were set up for and for whatever array of circumstances failed to achieve and the power of
not feeling alone yeah and it made me question things in my own life and what else and things we can
do and when you guys see the movie maybe that will make more sense but powerful that's the word yeah
Yeah, it's a very much, it's a movie very much about looking into and embracing the void in some ways.
And it's cool to be able to say that about a Marvel Flake.
And yeah, I mean, there's a lot of fun action, there's a lot of cool hand-to-hand stuff.
Great jokes, really funny characters.
Red Guardian had some great lines, but none of them failed forced.
It's not like we see these same actors, are all the actors making jokes.
It's just the ones that that's kind of in their character and personality.
Yeah, it's the friction of this rag-tag group of people who don't want to be working together,
having to work together under desperate circumstances.
Really, really good.
Absolutely.
And a lot of imagination, surprisingly.
I'm not going to say what or how, but like a greater sense of,
it's almost mind-bending in certain ways, and I like that about it.
Yeah, manifesting certain things visually.
So, gang, if you've seen it already, or if it's Friday by the time you're watching
this Thursday night, leave us your thoughts.
