Starting point is 00:01:44 Okay. This movie, I had a lot of fun. I thought it was super cute, but I also love the minions. Who wants to bite at the bit to go first to talk about minions versus monsters? I feel like John's really excited. I feel like it's just the left to right. Let's go. I mean, I have been on record saying that I prefer the Minions movies to the Despicable Me movies as a whole.

Starting point is 00:02:10 I mean, the first Despicable Me movie is lovely and is very touching. And then once we get past the first one, they start subtracting heart each time. I agree. I agree with that. These ones are less burdened by the need to do that. And so I feel like each one has been more proportionally successful to me over time. So, like, this was everything I wanted and hoped for. This was super fun.

Starting point is 00:02:36 As a film fan, as a fan of film history as well, I, yeah, just got a huge kick out of this. This is a movie made for me, you know, like, I'm for the child in me. So, yeah, I mean, I thought it was super fun. I really like, like, like, once you get to Hollywood and then making the movie, you know, like things are pretty simple. but, you know, I like that they kind of reappropriated. What the first movie did was, like, you spend the first half just being, like,

Starting point is 00:03:02 on this weird journey throughout history until you get to the main point that you're going to spend time in. And I really like the way they did that here. And, yeah, the voice cast, the guest voices and stuff, really fun. All the slaps, like the minions. I like the minions movies a lot because they leave room for the fact that, like, the minions themselves as drivers of bits and things are great because they're little slapstick characters,

Starting point is 00:03:26 they're clown characters. They're not really dependent so much on dialogue. So you get a whole other realm of comedy out of that when you don't have to worry so much about things. Like the depict of me movies are more driven by character dynamics and dialogue while still keeping that loony tunesness intact, whereas these get to be all loony tunes in a way,

Starting point is 00:03:43 I think it's really fun. So I had a blast. Yeah, I feel like what I think hit at most at home for me is that when they first open it up, it's like James is on the outskirts. He's sort of an outcast. He meets Henry. When you're like an artist, you're trying to make a film.

Starting point is 00:04:01 It's like you can feel very insulated, like from, I want to do this thing, but it is very hard to break into the business. But there are good people out there. And it was just such a fun story to see, like, James met his people. And that's what you have to do if you're going to make a film or do anything in this business. You have to find your people, especially in Los Angeles. and I feel like I may be making way more out of this than what it was. But with them showing that to me, I was like, I love everything about it. I mean, in me coming to L.A. to go to musical theater school,

Starting point is 00:04:34 but then falling in love with film and all of that and making short films. It's like I did have to find my people, the DPs that I wanted to work with, the gaffers, the sound people that were willing to be like, I'll do your soundtrack, but do it for a discount. Why? Because I believe in you, and I like the stuff that you make. And I think that that's exactly what happened here. with like James and Henry and the fact that Ed never stopped rolling. It's like you have a good crew.

Starting point is 00:04:59 Stick with it. And I know there was way more to this movie than that. Obviously, it's very cute and a lot of fun. And all the actors are great. But to me, I really like they highlighted that because James is a cute little like outcast of an artist. And he found his people. And I love that. Wow.

Starting point is 00:05:17 Well, high praise all around from everybody. Let me even the mood out. Yeah, sure. Even it out. that's what I'm here to do even if I don't mean it this was a surprise in so many ways

Starting point is 00:05:32 I was very much taken aback by how much it was about cinema I'm not someone who like looked out for what are people saying about this Minions movie so I didn't like watch any reviews on it not out of like oh I'm going to react to it so I don't want to know anything

Starting point is 00:05:46 it's just not something that it's not the kind of movie I'm going to go look up to see what people are actually thinking or talking about and I was surprised by it And it did get me thinking how, you know, if you go to like Universal Studios, is that the minions are a big part of the Universal Studio DNA now, Illumination Entertainment. And for better or worse, they're a part of film history. You know, it's like they're a massive franchise.

Starting point is 00:06:11 The minions themselves have overtaken the Despicable Me franchise. They're bigger than that. And this sort of meta way of putting themselves in here when it's like, while they make like so much money, what the film talk is about, minions is very divisive. You know, a lot of people really hate them.

Starting point is 00:06:33 And then a lot of people really love them. And I like that they decided to make a movie that sort of puts a little bit of awareness in that by having them be a staple of film history. And I think the animation flourishes that they did from beginning and were absolutely beautiful. The textures and the variety, I would say, you know, when they go through like the black and white

Starting point is 00:06:55 and inserting themselves in the stuff that was real life, certain hand-drawn looking moments, and it was also a funny movie as well. I do feel like, I don't know if it's my favorite Minions movie of them all. So it might be the first one. I'm not sure. It comes to like the minions movies themselves.

Starting point is 00:07:14 Because I thought that the first, I really thought the first half of this was so wild and zany and good and it was like setting up for a surprising movie with like oh shit we might get like character development here or a character arc with ed or and henry or like their friendship or something like that it actually seemed like they were setting something up there from the loneliness to them finding camaraderie and then then going to make the film like all that like the movie just kept getting better and better and better and I love the idea of taking like your real life stories and then converting that into a story to tell in cinema because you put yourself into the films that you make, you know.

Starting point is 00:07:53 And it was like a certain portion after, I want, there's like right at the introduction of, uh, Dort and then who's the, Gumi was the one? Yeah. Dort and Gumi where it was taking this other direction that I wasn't quite

Starting point is 00:08:10 sure if I was enjoying the movie at that point. Because I was actually really into the whole like making, doing the film and they're making, they're becoming movie stars now they're going to go make their own movie and then started diverting into like a different movie and it was becoming a movie it was becoming like an actual just movie movie instead of them just making a movie and it was becoming a minivan monster movie of a minion sort so i like what it was like transitioning into i just wasn't enjoying it as highly but by the time they got to the finale with dort uh i really like that wrap up and the reveal like oh he is just actually some weird creatures like just some guy in that suit and uh the mislyly when you introduce them at the sci-fi convention part was really enjoyable and I'd actually really like Goomy a lot I thought the Goomy character was great

Starting point is 00:08:57 and it was a lot of fun and yeah I just feel like there was a for a movie that surprised me with how much heart it had in the beginning and how much it was getting me to connect with these two new minions characters I thought they were actually going to land somewhere where they attempt to

Starting point is 00:09:14 if you're going to try to make like a if you're going to go like hey we're going to make a real movie out of this and not just a bunch of series of sketches and wild events. I thought they had an opportunity to do that. I was just a little bum that they didn't do that opportunity. And I don't show up for the Minions movies for that. I wouldn't have considered or thought of that unless the movie didn't present it.

Starting point is 00:09:32 Because the movie presented it was the only reason I thought of it. But, you know, for what a Minion's movie is, this is a pretty successful one. It's a, I was surprised by how beautiful it was. And it was like a really funny movie, too. And it was a really good time. At a day, you just want to, like, laugh and have a good time. And I think the movie succeeds at, what it sets out to do.

Starting point is 00:11:18 Yeah, as I kind of see what you're saying, it's like once you get to the point where whoever it is reads from the book, I feel like there's an interlude where we stop doing as much of the, the game of the movie up until then has been like, we're having fun with the charm of the oscillating medley of different Hollywoodisms that we're doing, and we're sort of, you know,

Starting point is 00:11:37 having fun with the how the sausage is made of it all. And then once they raise Goomy and then Goomy gets the actual, you know, I guess Phillips and Howard here, the other two monsters, up until you get to Irene, you're sort of like stuck in a different movie where you're sort of more aware of like, oh, I know what they have to do, and I know where this is kind of headed.

Starting point is 00:11:55 So like the freewheeling sort of like, what is going to happen next? Or where are they going to go? Or what other piece of film history they're going to pull in, kind of gets put on the back burner until you get to that climactic finale. Yeah, it's like, yeah,

Starting point is 00:12:09 I can see why that would be a bit of a grape. Yeah, their friendship, like you would think that going with James and Henry in the beginning, it would have been really nice, yes, to get that ending where it ties it back, where maybe he's at his sketchbook and they're now working on it together because even when they're in that

Starting point is 00:12:26 warehouse and I was like, you could film a movie here, I was legit excited to just see them work together and try to make like an indie film. We didn't get that, but it's not like a huge loss, but it would have been really nice at the end, I think, to have James and Henry

Starting point is 00:12:41 come together and have some sort of like I believe in you kind of a thing. I get that we got the golden banana on stage and all of that. I would have wanted to hear more, even if it was gibberish of like we're seeing how much like Henry believes in James

Starting point is 00:12:58 and James is thankful for Henry being there. And that's why he is where he is, right? Because of that that found friendship and someone believed in him and now here we go. But yeah, we didn't get that, but that's okay. Yeah, because they had that moment

Starting point is 00:13:13 where I'm getting them all mixed up. Who's the actual director of the camera? James. James. James. That's right. Of course. James, where it seems like he's getting a little too egotistical and losing the side of his friendship. It seemed like they were setting stuff up and bringing it back up. And that's the only reason why I thought of it. But yeah, I mean, the finale, though, was exciting.

Starting point is 00:13:35 And it, like, redeemed a lot of the parts where I was kind of dipping out, you know? Because it's like, literally, it is, it is. in half of act two when I was like in and out of it not fully in but then the third act brought it all back so overall if we're breaking a movie down by I don't know not three acts but three fourths of the film I'm like three fourth is pretty solid for me and I really enjoyed it thought I had a really good time rank them rank them oh god this is the fourth no it's the third it's the third is minions and the rise of grew and then this one I I don't have to rank one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one one. Okay. It's when the first one, no, that's despicable me. When she's like, it's so fluffy, I want to die. Okay. It's been a few years for us, John. Why don't even think you rank them, John? The minions are all the despicable's me. The minions, I would, it's, it depends on the day. There's three. If I'm putting my most critical hat on, it's probably one three, two, but it might be three, one, two. You know.

Starting point is 00:14:43 Let him go. You put one. You put one. And I'd put, the only real question if you want to mix in Despicable Me for me is maybe you put Despicable Me towards the top of that and then you put the three minions movies and then the rest of the despicable Me's beneath that. Okay. All right. I think we've heard enough from John. Any last words, Gregory Alba.

Starting point is 00:15:04 No, I'm good, man. Really? Voice cast was also really great. I want to shut that out. They were all really, really great voice casting. Agreed. Lovehouse and Janie miss her. And George Lucas really showed up.
