Minions, too. Minions. The rise of grew. The rise of grew, which rhymes with two. And Drew. And Ron Joxy. No, it doesn't, but we're Ron Joxy, baby. It's all good.

It's all good. I saw what you did. Listen, I can't be mad at the journey that we've been on. I'm pretty happy about it. it. Same. It is, these little yellow dudes, they have a little bit of a hold on us. These little beans, man.

How are you feeling that we're finally at the end of this journey, at least until... Until we get current. Exactly. I mean, I have so many thoughts and feelings right now. Thank you guys for welcoming us into the despicable family. You know, I don't know what to expect. I feel like the original minions was kind of an underrated experience based on what I had been led to believe. So I'm actually kind of low-key expecting this one to surprise me again.

So I don't know, you know, I'm a little, I'm kind of anticipating it. What are you thinking? I'm with you. I thought that I was going to think Minions was significantly worse or less than despicable me. But we didn't feel that way. And therefore, expectations are high now and shall they be met by our buddies? Buddies. If anyone can meet them.

I guess we'll see. But buddies can. All right, here we go. Rise of group. What's he gonna do? Say it wasn't you. A one, a two, and a three. Oh, man, oh man, oh man, oh man. Oh, man.

I'm happy with that movie. Dude, these minions movies, low-key, it's weird. There's every reason to be, like, cynical, and yet I'm like, both the minions have surprised me pleasantly. What does that get on Rotten Tomatoes? I'm going to look this up because... 210%? 10%

you look it up and I'll also look it up. Yeah, that's good. Minions two. Minions two. R.T. All right, here we go. I got there.

You got there too. How much? 70% on the tomato meter. Dude, look at that. 89 in the popcorn meter. I think that might be the highest of any of the minions movies. It might be.

I mean, of any of the despicable, no. Were any of the despicable movies higher than that? I think that might be the highest one, right? Let's go. Let's do it. a gauntlet. Yeah. Despicable.

M.ois. Oh, Distigal Me is 80%. First one's 80. Yeah. 75 for number 2, 58, number 3, 56, number 4.

And then, yeah. Okay, so this was the third highest. Minions to the Rise of Gru, third highest. Dude, this movie was legitimately solid. That was a solid, solid movie.

Surprisingly. And the thing is, like, this movie is more of a, like, despicable me. in so far as you know it's grew related against grew focused again

and they're in more of their you know established rhythm together but because grew is a kid and because the dynamics are different and because you get to reset some of the themes that way it's kind of nice it's like you know you established

the retro idea in the previous minions movie specifically where we're going back and it's kind of muddy in the timeline because, you know, it's like you have Dispicable Me 3 has a very 80s, uh, nostalgic 90s nostalgic thing happening. But this is, you know, you establish a minions one. We're in like all throughout history into the 60s. And then for this movie, we're now in the 70s.

So it's still continuing that thing that's kind of unique to minions, but it's also like, okay. And now kid grew. We introduced kid grew again in the last one. And, uh, I don't know. They, it's like because they don't have the. burden. It feels in hindsight like maybe it was a burden to have to make these family movies

about family and him being a dad. Not that that's bad, but it seems like they ran out of stuff to really want to do with some of that. But so weird about that though is because this is inadvertently a movie about family. Like he found a mentor who really was more like a

father figure to him than he's ever had. Exactly. And that relationship and then he becomes like a father figure to all the minions. So, and yes, it's a little bit more of mentorship boss, but it's not, like, it's a found family movie, which is really what the despicable mean movies are, found family movies. But these ones, I don't know, they kind of give themselves permission to, like, A, have more fun sometimes and B, hit in lessons a little harder. Yeah. And C, be like a little quirkier.

Yeah. I like that the Minions movies embody, like, again, there's a certain element of, like, slapstick and clown, and there is, like, a uniquely somewhat French quality to some of the humor. Not that I'm, like, super well-versed, but I kind of can get the inkling. It's, like, the way they have the cartoonishness, the way it's, like, this sort of mishmash of all these different languages and food terms. And, like, they're off in their own little world, and they have their own. specific nature and there are so many great little buttons on these random things. They come to his window to implore him to adopt them all and it's sad and raining. And they all climb in to reveal that like it's just one of them is just showering everyone

with the hose and one of them's like taking a bath and it's like stuff like that is really cheeky and like it's low key but it's like classic comic strip stuff. Totally. Staying on this page for one second, I'm just looking at these two reviews for Rotten Tomatoes that both said that it's certified fresh and I agree with both of these. Mark her mode, my dude. I love that guy. He said the minions are brilliant, brilliant animated slapstick.

And there's something about it that just tickles my funny bone. I agree with that. And then Jenny Nuff said, minions, the rise of grew might not be sophisticated storytelling, but not all animated films have to be. Sometimes they can just be about joy. And those two, I feel like do kind of perfectly embody how I was feeling that I was just like, I'm into this movie.

I'm into a start to finish. And also, it claims it's an hour, 34 minutes. This movie was an hour, 20 minutes. Like, this movie was brief. It did not overstay its welcome. It was like, this is a cute story. Here's what we're going to tell you. And you don't want to do it alone.

And we're going to make sure you've got that message. And we're in different cities. We've got quirky things to us. Like, there was one time when the minions were all downstairs in their laboratory, and they're trying to brainstorm how to get grew back. And there's just a piece of paper behind them on the wall that says, why? Why? It's like, that's stupid and I love it.

Yeah, they have like such, again, like the, they have the perfect amount of, like, dumb humor because it's like, it's, there's like an innocent obliviousness. John Claude Van Damme? What? Was he? Was he? Goal down. Sorry. John Claude.

Dolf Lundgren was, uh, okay. They looked to the wrong. John Claude Van Damien. Oh, he was the lobster arm guy. I missed that. Oh, my God. Okay, yeah. And then John DiMaggio and Kevin Michael Richardson is a couple of the henches.

Oh, Lucy Lawless, wow. Yeah, Lucy Lawless was Nunchuk, Danny Trejo, Dolph Longgren. Like, it's... Wu-Tang! Yeah, Arisa was the bike was Lenny Kravitz. Let's go. And then, yeah, Mr. Perkin. That's why we recognized his voice, okay.

It was interesting because... What a cast. Yeah, this movie was... Like, there's something about what the... I've enjoyed the, you know, marathon that this has been. I still think the first... Dispicable Me movie is the strongest, followed by, like, the second one. And then, you know, they kind of go in order, I feel like, in hindsight.

But, like, these Minions movies have sort of freed themselves of certain things, so they can't... Like, the first one was a nice surprise, because, again, it's, by and large, not... I was actually kind of worried watching this at first, because I was like, we're going from Minions One, which was, again, removed from a bunch of context, and it was in a situation where the comedy is largely slapstick and physical. and more energy related than banter or jokes or anything like that. Whereas like the Dispicable Me movies are much more character dialogue and jokes and stuff like that. And so going into this, I'm like, okay, Gru is taking Center again,

and now there's more of a, you know, people talking and planning and plotting kind of story happening. But I think they actually, they married it nicely. There are times where I was like, you know, okay, this could be more of a Minions movie based on what the first one was. but at the same time Did you prefer the first Minions movie to this Minions movie? I guess I would probably

inch it slightly more in that direction because that movie has slightly more of that again sort of wordless comic strip classicness to me that was just so fun to be surprised by but then again

I really was again pleasantly surprised by what this turned out to be and I thought this managed in less time than some of the despicable movie movies to be slightly... Like you said, and like that review pointed out,

it's like, it's better rounded in proportion, and it's not like going super deep, it's not like the craziest story you've ever seen, but they came up with a colorful cast of villains, a clear situation, a cool thing for this, like,

sort of father figure adventure, enough sort of hijinks for the minions to go upon. It's a bit random at times, but like, hey, why not? You know, I liked San Francisco and the, you know, festival of lights

that they're having at the end and this sort of like, yeah, it's the 70s, and so we're doing all those tropes, but we also have this zodiac thing. It's a little bit like, just throw a bunch of stuff in there, but I'm also okay with that, and I feel like the first Minion's movie had that too.

And I feel like they're right, I could, for different reasons, put one over the other in any point, really. I think that's fair. You know, like, because I was really delighted by the first Minions being truly, this movie suits its title. Like, Gru is part of the title.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Imagine writing this movie and being like, in my movie is Julie Andrews. Julie Andrews. John Clause Van Down. Steve Carell, Alan Arkin, Michelle Yell, at some point you have to be like, this is the coolest thing that ever happened, man. Yeah, and that's the thing too, is I can't imagine any of them.

This can't have been as expensive on voice talent as it seems because, like, then Giulia Anders is in like one scene. Yeah, they didn't record that many days. It didn't seem like they had to record very much. And, I mean, Dolf Lundgren, I barely feel like I had time to register that character speaking.

much. He spoke a little bit. But knowing them now, I'm sort of like, oh, fun. I wasn't really able to pick them out in the moment. But yeah, just filled, packed with voices, and then you get Steve Coogan back and some other people, along with just, you know, I'm sure, like, just working

career voice actors. But yeah, it's like there's a lot of color, and I like the, you know, the shiny, I thought that there was inspiration, there were moments of inspiration. I thought were really fun, both in the just expanding, of the world, the fun and games of every time we do this,

there's a new set of villains. This group had some oomph to it. One of the lesser, even though we don't get to spend time with many of them individually, I thought this was pretty, I don't know, I don't know where I don't care really to rank anything. But I feel like these might be a more memorable outing of villains than some of the other ones potentially. I agree.

I agree. Even just because of design, too. They looked really cool and different, and their vehicles were cool. too, which is fun. I kind of thought, oh, if I was a kid, I would be begging my parents to go let me buy these toys at the store and play with these little action figures

or whatever. I don't know if they make them, but I'm sure with the... Yeah, like, that's so fun. That's so fun. Yeah. Yeah. I'm pleasantly surprised and also behind the scenes information for you guys, I've been literally shooting all day for eight hours

here, and I was like, gosh, Minions 2 shooting this at a... Shooting at 8 o'clock at night after full days of shoots, I'm a little worried. I'm a little worried. And this was like, there was not one moment where I felt tired or out of it.

It was like nonstop. It really kept my attention in a way that it was going to be an uphill battle for it. And it was like, yeah, we got you. We got you. So I'm grateful for that. It's got me excited for minions and monsters. Yeah, me too. I hope that it's good, man.

I do too. I do too. It's weird. Because I know I came into this with, just the knowledge that people are cynical about minions in general because they're like the ultimate merch characters of the here and now

but I don't know I watched these and I'm like these have things for the adults in ways that are less obvious than I would imagine these have like are using classic elements of different kinds of comedy in ways that are perfectly like that can be reappropriated into the here and now in very fun and charming

ways and yeah like these always these specifically two minions movies have nicely caught me off guard. This was the final acting role from Alan Arkin. That's crazy. And even though I'm sure there are many, many, many titles in his film on, that people would reach for first, like, this is a sweet note. It is. It is. It's a very sweet kind of, it wasn't the, yeah, I didn't cry during this movie, but I was

endeared to that. I loved his character. Yeah, and their little relationship was like just the right proportions for the movie. Totally that, but they also set him up for success when they drop him into the water and it's like, you feel for this guy. He's the one who just all the work he put you guys together you know yeah and it's weird because like he wanted to i love that thing he's like i just wanted to do villainous stuff with my friends yeah and these guys weren't friends they were true villains yeah so it's always a funny conversation these movies have about like what is villainy actually mean to you is being a mischief guy or like an evil guy

but uh yeah oh hey what what it says while the opening secret entrance to the bank you can see the el macho character from despicable me oh no way Two without costume, leaving a teller. I love that they pay attention to those little details. We got Vector's dad. That was fun. It's always hard to read trivia in the moment, but I don't know. Steve Krell was paid $12.5 million, 25 times his salary for Dispicable Me, 2010. That's why everybody else is a much smaller role.

Because, again, I remember we read a... 12.5 million. I remember we read a fact in one of these... that we read a fact that said he was going to leave. And so this movie being not only a minions, but now Steve Carell is back to lead it, I was like, okay,

interesting. And now in hindsight, I'm like, I bet he had to have walked out with a massive bag. I would say 12 million for a voice role is a massive bag. Is it's like stealing the moon?

Yeah. Good for him, dude. Good for him. Got another Ferdonia sign in there. Same. Can relate. Oh, my God. That's what we're getting for this shoot, right?

12 mil or was your contract a little? Yeah. Mine was 12.15 years was just 12. That's all good for you. Wow. It's, you know, it's about time. It's about time that the gender gaps won in the other direction. I'll take half a million dollars less.

For real. Out of the kindness of my own heart. What a good guy. That's what I try to be. You know. When the minions are about to sleep with Gru, because of the thunder, you can hear three Indonesian words. They say,

Goring, which means fried rice. Keikap manis, which means sweet soy sauce. Amazing. And terima cassi, which translates to thank you. Man, these movies make me hungry always. They do. They really do. For little, there's got to be a lot of minion-shaped foods out there, you know.

That's true. Yeah. But we got a couple of questions, I think. Okay, let's hear them, patrons. Dude, Maurice Gray Jr., who's your favorite member of the Vicious Six Rocks? probably Taraji just I loved her design or clothes

that's such a boss even the dragon part of it just yeah so striking and yeah she did look like spirro

spiro the dragon a little bit but I liked it a lot let me let me let me pull up the vicious six again I want to get a real well my actual

favorite member of the vicious six is our dude but he gets kicked out yeah yeah but he's an OG member I feel like you were the most into the nun

anytime the nunchucks came on and she was like floating. I feel like that that was your vibe. Yeah. I mean like, okay, so Bell Bottoms is like like objectively. She's the best. Yeah, yeah, I would say yeah.

Like Nunchuk just because yeah, like I love, love, love the fact that she's out here making the Nunchucks look good. I loved her pipe organ themed like spaceship thing. She's like ascending in heavenly light. Like I was so much. So many great jokes. and as a kid who grew up with nuns, you know, spoke to me deeply.

So, so, yeah, I would say. I just don't understand why the lobster claw guy, why he chose for, like, it's clearly attached to him. Why is that what you've picked to put on yourself? You know, you got to have a good marketing guy, and maybe that's just what they came up with. They were like, you know, maybe you're from the coast. Maybe this guy hails from Maine, you know.

What was his name again? His name is Jean-Claude. I didn't realize. That's funny, funny. I interviewed John Claude Van Damme once. Yeah, was it cool? Was it good? It was interesting.

Were you Rachel? No, I was interested, though. And who was Monica in this situation? He was wild. He was wild. Was he wild? Oh, my God. He was wild.

How do you know he was wild in this? No, he talked about how he had had six wives, but he was back married to his first wife, and he was like, I always knew she was the one. And I said to him, it just came out. I was just, I think I was like, if you always knew she was the one, then why'd you marry five other people after her? Because I had to make absolutely certain. And he looked at me and he said, interesting question. Something like that.

Oh, yeah. He told a lot of stories. He was wild, yeah. That makes me very happy inside. I was like, huh? So, why'd you do that? That's the scoop, though. I liked him, though.

He was a character. He was interesting. Yeah. Yeah. I would agree. I would agree. And Danny Trejo, I always love. Oh, yeah.

Absolutely. I mean, you know, I liked his big metal hand. Yep. There wasn't that much. And I mean, Dolph Lundgren, he looked like rollerball, which is cool. Yeah, you liked that. I always wanted to see rollerball, and I never got to. So, you know, that's for me.

That's my reparation for that. Minions also, Jay Rushden. Jay says, question, do you guys own any vine? vinyl records or cassette tapes. Okay. Oh, heck yeah. I was going to say, I'd be shocked if John's answers now. Love me some vinals.

That's my, I was a CD guy, and then I stopped having a CD player in the car around the time that, like, the real resurgence of vinyl and, like, record store day was beginning. So for a little while now, as for years on end, I've at least, like, yeah, if I love the thing or if it's, you know, some I particularly care about, you know, got to grab that vinyl. Okay. Some older genres, too. Did your parents, like, gift you any vinyl? Do they still have any vials? Or did anybody in your life gift you any, like, they kept them that whole time? Or every vinyl you get, are you purchasing?

Oh, yeah. We've got some, I've got some stuff that, yeah, my, my. Like hand-me-down vinals? Yeah, I got a bunch of them when I, when I was, like, a tween, I got, like, a DJ kit, like a very basic mixing slash scratching kit. So no one was using the records at that point in time because this was slightly before vinyl was, like, a big thing again. So they were like, yeah, just here's some of the old vinyl. So I have like just a stack of classic stuff.

But then, yeah, new things as well for sure. And cassette tapes are back. I mean, I have a lot of cassette tapes from when I was a kid. And then every once in a while these days when someone I like puts out a special tape. Yeah. Yeah. I still have a cassette tape player at Grammys. And there's some cassettes there.

Hell yeah. And my dad at home still has like a whole wall of like all cassette tapes. Hell yeah. But I don't have a vinyl player. I don't have a record player and Get it. That's silly That I don't however Every time I think about getting one

I just think about how much money I'm going to spend And I like $350 No no like forever Yeah Not on the player Just because I love Like I become obsessed with things

And then I'm like I'm gonna be A big record girl So I keep telling myself like It's like buying video It's the music version of buying video games. Right. If you buy the system, you're going to keep buying the games. And games can be, can be, not always, but can be kind of pricey. So it's definitely like a luxury item. Because I have ways to play my music. It's not like I'm

lacking in ways right now to play music. But I just think it's so much cooler. It's a whole different tactile experience. And it's organized in a way where yeah, you put it on. And then like there's a side and you can kind of float around in a different way, but you're also kind of involved in a different way. And I love listening to albums start to finish. So it just feels really up my alley. I think once I get the 12.5 mil from this shoot, I should be good

to get. That extra half million should be good enough. In fact, you could get about as nice of a record player as you could possibly hope. You get a fully acrylic one. I think gold. Get a solid gold's record player. Yep. Keep it in an air-conditioned room. That's what I'm thinking. Yeah, yeah. You get the Bluetooth and the

USB and the hardwired speakers. Oh, yeah. Every variety. Yeah. somebody asked me, what do you do with your $12 million? What I did was. What I did. Yeah, it was worth it. I can't wait to shoot the next minion.

I'm waiting for that next minions movie so I can make my tape cassette cave. I know some people are hungry, but. Nah, nah. Hear me out. I was hungry. My ears were hungry. Yep, that's what I do with my money. Yeah, cool question though, Jay.

Thank you. Yeah, I liked his big final platter, torture device. I thought that was. Oh, ma, ma, ma, ma. How do you like? And good soundtracks throughout this. Yeah, but that being the song that... Yeah.

It's just great. It's a good choice. Yeah, they're funny. Yeah, man, this is pretty solid. I like this. I thought they had a lot of fun. I'm so glad we liked this movie. I was so not looking forward to not liking a movie tonight.

I feel you. I didn't know what I was exactly anticipating, but I'm always glad to be... I thought I might even enjoy this. I said I had some expectations, and I still walked out with like, I am pleasantly surprised. And again, exactly what I imagined at first. But it also does what it says on the tin, and I like that. Yep, totally.
