Join Tara Erickson & Aaron Alexander as they tackle the globe-trotting thrills of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. When a rogue, sentient AI known as “The Entity” breaks loose, IMF agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise, Top Gun: Maverick, Jack Reacher) must race the clock to secure the device before it plunges the world into chaos. Alongside him are loyal teammates: the resourceful tech genius Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg, Shaun of the Dead, Star Trek), the steadfast hacker Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames, Pulp Fiction, The Transporter), and the enigmatic field agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson, The Girl on the Train, Dead Reckoning Part Two). They’re bolstered by Grace (Hayley Atwell, Captain America: The First Avenger, Dead Reckoning Part One), while CIA Director Alan Hunley (Henry Czerny, Mission: Impossible, Rogue Nation) marshals official support. Our hosts break down every pulse-pounding stunt—from the death-defying sky-diving assault out of a cargo plane and the jaw-dropping motorcycle leap across a collapsing Venetian viaduct, to the explosive runaway train showdown that tests Hunt’s limits. With betrayals around every corner and impossible action sequences that redefine the genre, Dead Reckoning proves once again why Ethan Hunt’s missions always defy the odds. Tune in as Tara & Aaron dissect the emotional stakes, the franchise’s signature gadgetry, and the heart-stopping finale that leaves you desperate for Part Two! Starting point is 00:00:00 Stop. Do you know how fast you were going? I'm going to have to write you a ticket. To my new movie, The Naked Gun. Liam Nissan. Buy your tickets now. I get a free Tilly Dog. Not included.
Starting point is 00:00:12 The Naked Gun. Tickets on sale now. August 1st. There is the cold. And it is the froy of the Montagne Blue. The froy at its summit. Coors Light. T'envee a fraud.
Starting point is 00:00:25 Celebrate in a fashion responsible. You have to have the age legal for consuming Thank you to Shopify for sponsoring this video. More on them in just a bit. This week's videos are sponsored by Price Picks, the easy-to-use fantasy sports betting app. More on them in just a bit. Should we just freaking get to it already?
Starting point is 00:00:46 We can go, dog. Let's go. Oh, wow. Dang, that was 240? That was crazy. That's crazy. It's crazy. It was good pacing.
Starting point is 00:00:58 Thank you to Prepper for helping edit down these highlights. We appreciate you. Also, Eric and Nerd Chronic does a great job. Doing these second edits. Wow. Wow, wow, wow. Okay. I'll tell you, the one thing that I do remember,
Starting point is 00:01:14 I knew he was going to jump off that cliff. And when you're like, CGI, I was like, just wait and see. That's so fun. How do you feel? that's yeah i remember that in a little bit of the i knew that like the train at the end that like somehow it was falling but i didn't remember much for the rest of the movie i was like i don't know it's gonna happen anyway so yeah how are you feeling i feel good i feel good that was a lot of fun yeah uh it was it was cool you know again the stunts are always amazing in this this franchise tom cruise is always amazing i love seeing the the cast of characters I feel like this one had a lot of moving parts was informationally dense, but still a good time nonetheless. Amazing pacing.
Starting point is 00:02:07 You know, I think they do a great job of finding a way to, you know, balance the moving pieces while also having them work and tan them together through the action and also using creative ways to shoot that action. and they're always willing to up the stakes or finding new creative ways to up the stakes. So it's never feels dull. I cannot say this is my favorite one of them because I don't know what it is. Maybe it was just we kind of were repeating the exposition a lot and then the moving pieces
Starting point is 00:02:42 and I think the entity is not vague because I think there's real world implications for AI, especially. in 2025 the elevation of it but it feels like this this abstract concept of a threat that is you know we haven't seen the real implications of it yet but we have seen some of the personal personal implications with our girl isla isla is Rebecca Ferguson's character she's gone she's perished sad real real sad yeah and it's wild now we're we're up to date pretty much with the exception of this new one coming out and I'm like wow so we're in the same
Starting point is 00:03:25 place as the rest of the world kind of going in and finding out what the final reckoning is so that's a pretty cool position to be in I think the way that they were able to utilize these new people was was really strong as well like I really enjoyed Haley Atwell was part of this franchise now um I liked the guy who played Gabriel I thought he was really cool though we still don't know what the mystery is who's that girl that you know got got got got got before he joined the IMF. We don't know. I guess we'll find out the next one.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Right. But overall, I had a good time. I can say that, you know, if I saw this in the theaters, definitely some celebratory moments, but I'm happy to get to watch it with you here and watch it with you guys here. But, yeah, overall, I think it's fun. I think this one, this one might fall, like, fourth for me. If I'm just, like, going off my head, I'm sure, like, we'll do a ranking video at some point on the socials. But yeah, I think this one is sort of behind three, three, six, and five for me.
Starting point is 00:04:28 But I think it's kind of middle of the road, but still very much enjoyable. Tara, what do you feel? Yeah. I still had, I had a lot of fun. I mean, it's crazy that I did see this and I didn't remember a lot. A lot of it surprised me. What I really appreciated was that Haley Atwell was also doing her own stunts. The reason why I was like, we have to, we're definitely going to bring back Rebecca Ferguson
Starting point is 00:04:53 because when we saw her initially doing our own stunts, I was like, there's absolutely, no one had done that before besides Tom. And now we see her doing it, which is like, it was awesome. It was so much fun. So the fact that, you know, that we lost Rebecca, we didn't even really get to see her and Hunt's relationship really flourish. Like we haven't really gotten to see him in any really like relationship, hardcore since he's
Starting point is 00:05:20 since three is the only one he was like actually in a relationship exactly that was my favorite ending of them yeah yeah where we actually really got a piece of his personal life you know where he's like really we could see we could feel it in the screen and this one it's it's very obvious
Starting point is 00:05:36 at him and at well have a lot of chemistry yeah um and that really gave me a lot in the beginning because the second they meet the way he grabs her and He's like, hi. I was like, what?
Starting point is 00:05:52 Okay, Tommy, we see you. And I just felt it on screen that they had great chemistry. I like how they're incorporating, yes, a real world dilemma. I mean, okay, because we are so close to AI now, think about I robot. You've seen that, right? It's been a minute, but I remember. A long time ago, right? The robots come out and you're like, well, you're like, this is far away from us.
Starting point is 00:06:17 I'm not going to stress. This is like, this could be very real. Especially the voice stuff. Exactly. That was wild. Right. Tapping in, right?
Starting point is 00:06:28 The government can already tap into our phone calls, right? Alexa's already listening to what you're saying. So is your phone. Imagine that now it can tap in and it gets to know, you know, your voice and can respond for you. All of these are very, they're very. possible, right? And that's what makes it, I think, even scarier, which is why it's a fun way to play with the entity here. Although I was like, I thought with them saying that the entity knew like exactly what you're going to do and that she was actually going to save Ethan Hunt because he had
Starting point is 00:07:12 saved her life before. And at the end, when the blonde, when she was dying, it was as though she was surprised by that saying it knew I was going to save you because you you didn't kill me why right and I'm like that's that's just wackadoo to me that's like it's just that's just it's just scary that it knows where you're headed meaning for everybody it it's always one step ahead of you knowing which move you're going to make based on your life and whatever has happened to you which to me we had heard it in the film but we didn't even we didn't really see it all come together until the blonde girl was dying and she was like you saved my
Starting point is 00:07:58 life why it knew i was going to come back and save you and it did and that's it's weird um i like that we got some that we got the original characters back especially the guy from the first one i always he's a great actor i forgive me i don't remember his name but um i like it the very end that you know she's like hunt told me what did she say that you could that you could help me or something that's like now she's part of the IMF and we're we're like getting in there but when you hear it with his original voice like it's very cool because it sort of takes me back to the first one because it was his voice it's your mission should you choose to accept it which is very cool in the other ones it wasn't always his voice but uh i like that
Starting point is 00:08:47 they brought him back that was fun obviously all of the stunts are amazing this whole entire script it's a lot it goes from you know the the sandstorm and then we're in we're in the car chase he's jumping off a cliff that whole train stunt is insane um it's just they just know how to they know how to rock and roll yeah i do i do understand it was a little weird when he's like and the guy behind him doesn't and so then he slowly takes out a gun that was a weird part that was like why wouldn't you just shoot her from jump if your whole thing was good to get the key exactly because if you shoot her she's going to drop the key exactly oh that was that was that was one riding move that I thought we could have done that a smarter way reject nation the basketball

Starting point is 00:12:28 Right. Right. We could have done it where I thought maybe she was going to hold it in her hand and then flip it and it would disappear. And that way they don't kill her because they're like, where did it go? Also, it's so weird because obviously we've seen seven of these movies now and some of the stuff seems a little, you know, implausible but you you buy into it right you suspend your disbelief my suspension of disbelief was really tested when he landed in the exact spot yeah off of a cliff to protect her i'm like really of all the
Starting point is 00:12:58 places totally i would have loved if we had known that we had maybe dropped that another lighter in that one guy's chest and tom was able to see that he's in that part of the train and then flies through it do you know what i mean I would have liked to add some logic to it. But it was just a happy accident. It was a coincidence where we're like, we don't, we're not going to get that lucky, right, give me a break. Of a whole ass moving train. But you know what? But we let it go because it's cool as hell.
Starting point is 00:13:26 Right. And he really did fly through there. And I thought it was going to be a callback to when we were in India. I think we were in India. I don't remember where you were at the top of that building when I was like, you got to disconnect that. That thing is going to pull you back out. And I like that. We almost got that of him being.
Starting point is 00:13:43 pulled back out of the train but he unhooked himself um yeah i don't know the movie is still just a blastrooney and i just cannot believe the amount of dangerous stunts that just tom just puts himself in he just puts it i don't know how they did them rolling in that car there's a camera in the car when they crash that little yellow car they turn all the way over and you see them in the car tumble over um there's just a lot of things they they do practically that has to take you have to train for it you have to be ready for it you probably got to sign a contract that says if you break anything or if you die you're not going to sue obviously i mean it's just wild yeah the other thing that kind of oh it's not it's not a plot hole per se
Starting point is 00:14:39 but I think that it did bother me because the way that the things played out I think it allowed for this plot to come to forth in fruition in some way was the fact that at the end of the last movie it seemed like they did an intentional okay we're letting you
Starting point is 00:14:55 let go of your wife so you can out be with Rebecca Ferguson. Exactly and now but now he has Haley Atwell but also I found it weird that they offered Haley Atwell the choice to be part of the team but didn't officially offer Rebecca Ferguson to be part of the team. Right.
Starting point is 00:15:09 Because, like, oh, yeah, she's off doing something else. She's off, you know, doing her own mission over here. I'm like, why aren't you all together and why wouldn't you tell Ethan what was going down if y'all, you know, are together now? But, you know, they had that one moment. I don't know. I don't even know if they ever kissed on screen together. No, they didn't.
Starting point is 00:15:28 She just hugged him when they were looking over Paris or Rome or what they were. Wow. They never actually kissed. She smiled. So it made it. Three movies in. Yeah. Not a single kiss.
Starting point is 00:15:37 That's kind of sad. That bothers me. Yeah. And it made it seem as though time had passed where they had not seen each other for a while. But they did explain that that's why, remember, that's why she had the key and she was hiding out in the beginning of the movie. I know. There was just a lot of moving parts, though, that I was like, maybe could have simplified it a little bit to focus on, I don't know. I still think it was like great.
Starting point is 00:16:07 I mean, it's cool where you have all of these different pathways. The entity is one, Gabriel, and then we have the memory. Then we have all these girls coming back. The White Widow, we have our boss. We're like, who do we trust? We can't trust anybody because they might be the freaking entity. Like, wild, you know? Yeah, the Big Brother thing, you know, the I always watching.
Starting point is 00:16:34 Yeah. I think it created some cool. sequences for sure I like that we have a tangible threat in Gabriel who's working with the entity when he came out of that coffin with the mask on that was cool that was cool
Starting point is 00:16:48 where it was as if the entity is showing him what the future is right where it lies and he's the only one that has access to that for now so I'll be curious to see if that comes back in that that little coffin with the thing
Starting point is 00:17:05 on the face or do we you know or do we just get to the submarine I don't know yeah what I will say is that this does truly feel like a part one like they found resolution at the end of the story Haley Arpo is now in this position you know we have eventually got both halves of the key so
Starting point is 00:17:21 we can position ourselves to the next movie we had our showdown with the tangible villain and then he's like damn you hunt so it really positions us to be in the next stage we haven't resolved the conflict but we haven't resolved the overall conflict we haven't won the war but we've won the battle totally and like i really appreciate it
Starting point is 00:17:41 i'm like okay it didn't feel like a cliffhanger when it is a cliffhanger but there was resolution within its um its internal narrative but not its overall narrative yeah i agree because we know we have the key but gabriel knows where the actual the the forming of the entity is in that submarine and luckily his girl told us at the very end so obviously we're going to have to match up there in the next one. I'm just, I'm not sure because of that head thing he had on that the entity showing him the future or the next steps with literally every single person that he encounters, that's going to be fairly interesting to see how it moves in that regard. Like, like, we go for it. We know where it's the Sebastival, whatever.
Starting point is 00:18:27 I don't know the name anymore now. I thought I had it right during the movie. So y'all just back off. Okay. The Russian submarine. Yeah. that um i'll just be curious to see where that where that takes us and how involved the entity is it it will we just be like all right that's done we got rid of gabriel but i because it's called
Starting point is 00:18:48 part one it's like how long is it going to take us to really get rid of the entity and gabriel in the in the beginning of the movie will we have it and then something else arises who knows i don't know freaking knows who knows man but i'm excited to to see it um I'm stoked. Yeah. Looking up some IMDs. Yeah. So did we do the IMDB for, I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:19:14 Do we do Rotten Tomato for the last one? Do you remember? I think we did. I don't remember. I don't remember. I don't know. Fallout with Henry Cavill himself. Okay.
Starting point is 00:19:28 I don't think we did. Okay. So let's do it for the last one and then we'll do it for the new one. Okay. What do you think? Okay. fallout was six right yes yeah okay yeah because i really like five and six okay so i think six for audience i would hope it's like 85 for critics 79 for six
Starting point is 00:19:53 do you want those in i don't remember i just remember liking six but i thought that honestly five like 11 out of 11. I love that movie so much. Yeah, I'll lock it in because my memory is just the worst. Okay, six, for audiences, you said 85. I did. It was 88. Oh, hell yeah. Let's go. Let's go. And for critics, it was 98. Critics love the last one. I love the last one too. It's three and five and six for me. Nice. I love that. Okay. So this one then, I'm going to get audience is like still around I'm gonna I'm gonna still say it's like it's 86 but critics I'm gonna go back down to 74 okay okay I'll lock that in audiences 94 yes they loved it critics 96 for this one for this one wow they're loving it you know what you can't
Starting point is 00:21:01 watch this and watch Tommy Cruz off in Austria Mountain, one of the highest peaks jump, float in the air, act the whole time, put off a parachute, you got to, you got to just give it up. It doesn't even matter if there's like a little
Starting point is 00:21:21 plot hole here and there. Who cares? Who cares? Who cares? He's an impressive man. These freaking stunts just blow, I mean, they blow a lot of other things out of fricking water they it's just it's one of a kind you know the most impressive thing about this movie is the fact that this was all i don't know of all but i know that they started shooting this during covid because remember the thing came out yes where he was yelling he said got your mask
Starting point is 00:21:46 yeah yeah i do remember that who forgets it yeah and then there's a lot of limitations during the the heat of covid so the fact that they're able to make a great movie and utilize all these actors and the situations in a way where you didn't even think about because there are certain movies that came out during this time or post, they're like, oh yeah, this is definitely like a COVID production. So, you know, they had to make certain certain shortcuts. I'm happy as they were able to do this without compromising the vision or the final outcome of the film, despite the circumstances that are happening at the time. Absolutely. This was one of the only productions that obviously had the budget to be able to do it.
Starting point is 00:22:27 To move a crew and a cast to go to a place where, you know, it would still be acceptable to shoot, which not a lot of this, I assume, is in the U.S., obviously. Of course. So that helped us out a lot. But, yeah, I agree with you. No, no shortcuts taken here, not in my opinion. Wackadoo Wild.
Starting point is 00:22:47 Wackado Wild. Even there at the end when he's like hang gliding or whatever. And they're like, what a soft landing. This is graceful. Like, what? With the phone. Like, you're an alien. dude like you're freaking i don't get it like where did you come from where did you go
Starting point is 00:23:04 did coton i joe tomie i joe felt it um okay do you have anything else to say to the people i don't i'm excited for the next one this has been a great journey thus far and let's get crazy let's get wild um don't forget to give us five stars you've listened on apple spot I'm supposed to say that in the beginning. I didn't. So those still here, we appreciate you. Please do it. Leave a comment so they know we're cool
Starting point is 00:23:35 and that I did my job so we don't get fired. I think Prepper. Yeah. We love you guys and we will see you on the next one. Duceus. How's it going, Flev. Flev Doran. My psych buddy, our Marvel guy, our most one of them.
Starting point is 00:23:56 everybody has been very lovely and positive, but you are one of the most bright and positive people at the Patreon. You've been here for such a long time, and if there's an impossible mission, it's just summing up how much joy and how much to be grateful for that you have brought us. And, you know, when I think of the Patreon, you're one of the first people who comes to mind.
Starting point is 00:24:17 And, you know, I can't really, like, the more I sit here and think about it while trying to do this fun, light-hearted shout-out, the more I am just kind of overcome with that level of grace. We used to talk a lot more back when especially Syke was going, because we would do the back and forth in the videos and the comments and stuff like that. And again, the Patreon has been such a lovely means of getting to know you guys a little better, a little more personally, getting to interact in a different way.
Starting point is 00:24:45 And yeah, you're one of the people who represents the most joy that can come of that to me. You know, we love all you guys, certainly, and especially. all you guys who care enough to, you know, contribute to the shoutouts and whatever else. But seriously, I just want to say thank you. And, yeah, stay, you know, do your Tom Cruise run and, you know, throw your exploding sunglasses and, you know, get the bomb out of your head before the thing goes off and rip off your mask for the big reveal. All the mission impossible stuff. But generally, just want to say thanks.
Starting point is 00:25:19 Big love to you, Flev, and I hope you're doing well out there. We'll catch you next month. I don't know.
