Héctor Jiménez shines as Esqueleto, Nacho’s trusty sidekick who adds a perfect mix of wit and charm to every scene, while Ana de la Reguera (known for Elite Squad and Narcos: Mexico) lights up the screen as Sister Encarnación, bringing sass and warmth to the monastery’s world. Aaron & Andrew break down every memorable moment—from the hilarious training montages and the raucous wrestling matches that have become cult classics, to the tender scenes that reveal Nacho’s true passion for music, family, and rock 'n roll. Starting point is 00:00:00 This week's videos are sponsored by prize picks, the easy-to-use fantasy sports betting app. More on them in just a bit. I am excited to experience Nacho Libre because I don't remember anything about it. Let's get into this. Let's get into that thing, Nacho! Cute. Very cute. Aww.
Starting point is 00:00:24 Adorbs. Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. I am. I am, I am. I am. I am. We want to thank the guys over at Prepper for this. Cutting down these highlights.
Starting point is 00:00:41 If you're listening on Napolos, Spotify, give us five stars. One, two, three for five. And Drusio. What did you think of natural labor? I think that the good people should go to rejectnation shop.com and get some cool teas like these. Tis like these. This like these. like this. Well, how I'm feeling, first of all, I'm in a joyous mood. This was a lot of fun.
Starting point is 00:01:06 It's been a long time since I saw Napoleon Dynamite. Probably sell that around the time of the release. So I don't really remember that movie or the tone and all that. So I would love to. Yeah, I would be down to too. So I'm not really familiar with the style of work of Jared Hess. Although I'm excited to see Minecraft. I've been hearing some good stuff. But I really enjoyed this. I like the tone. I like the style. It was a lot of fun. I think right away the movie knows what it is. But yeah, it was good. Jack Black is hysterical in it.
Starting point is 00:01:37 And I like the themes and the messaging in the film too about just aspiring to go after your dreams and perseverance, no matter how daunting it may be. I also love the relationship between nacho and. I forgot his friend's name already, but I really. Oh, Stephen, is that what was Stephen, right? Yeah, I really like the relationship between them. It's so, there's such polar opposites, but it works so well with each other.
Starting point is 00:02:10 I agree. Yeah, I really think that. No, I agree. Yeah, yeah, I just, I really think that they elevate each other. And I like that also, too, like I kind of alluded to it as well, that when they both need each other, they pick each other up as well. And I just thought they were, they were just so, again, I really didn't think. I didn't think Stephen was going to be a big factor in the film from his first scene when he just came in and stole the chips. I just thought that was just some random guy who stole some chips.
Starting point is 00:02:38 But I'm glad he became a big factor in the film to help Stee, or to help Nacho see that he could accomplish his dreams. And I also like seeing, too, the parallel as well to the relationship between his parents and the differing sides of, like, the religious views type of thing. because he didn't, he didn't believe in religion, he didn't believe in science type of thing where, you know, the parents had the same type of thing in terms of religion. And I, again, I forgot exactly the dialogue that was said. But, and they're like, yeah, we just got married. Obviously, different type of relationship. This one was more friendship. But I thought, like, again, it just, it had a prevalent thing there too. But I thought that was very fascinating as well. And yeah, this was just a lot of fun. I also like the, again, being such a very,
Starting point is 00:03:24 a wrestling snob myself. I thought the wrestling choreography was a lot of fun as well because I thought they honored a lot of moves as you and I kept culling out moves like pile drivers clothes lines, five star frog splashes so I thought that was great as well so yeah just a lot of
Starting point is 00:03:40 a lot of good stuff in here that I feel is very repeat worthy that you can pick up on as well in repeat viewings but I just I had a great time. It was very entertaining. It was a lot of fun. Had a lot of heart. I like the children as well, especially that one kid. I thought he really helped Nacho see, like,
Starting point is 00:04:01 you know, when he was also another kid that helped elevate Nacho, like whenever Nacho was feeling down as well, like, this kid inspired him like, hey, this is something that I'm fighting for. This is a noble cause for why I'm doing this as well. Not only it's my dream, but I'm fighting for the children. And this kid has always believed in me from the very beginning. And I appreciated that. How are you feeling? I'm feeling great, man. This was a, Beautifully fun movie. Just the kind of thing I needed. I forgot.
Starting point is 00:04:31 I've seen this movie since I was a kid. Literally the only thing I remembered about is obviously Jack Blacks in it. He has this mask. This mask. And you know what's funny? I haven't seen this movie in so long enough. I've had this mask since I was like a child. I didn't realize that this is the wrong shade of blue for that mask.
Starting point is 00:04:47 His mask is way lighter than this. I've had this so long. I don't remember where I got it from. It's gone. What? uh yeah but i love this movie jack black is hilarious i never thought that they would make a movie that was so abs not even maybe abstract but a movie that is absurdist and abstract but also kid friendly because i'm pretty sure this movie's pg and they didn't cuss once in the entire
Starting point is 00:05:16 movie the most violent thing was him throwing the corn into the guy's eye and yeah which was hilarious to me and i don't know i just like weird like abstract humor like this and just the certain inflections within words this was the best pg sports by technicality comedy um that i've seen in a minute and it's a it's a shame that this movie never got a sequel or it's just kind of this underdog like a movie that doesn't get the love and recognition deserves because i don't hear a lot of people quoting this movie at least not like that to an absurd degree or like a like a classic degree like i've heard like the nacho and i've heard uh i've the only seen i remember from this movie was him like squeezing his his cheeks together like with in front of the nun oh yeah but those i had no uh context for anything else and i'm happy that i didn't remember it because i feel like it's one of those movies that sticks with you um because of just the the weirdness of it. And I'm baffled that Nickelodeon greenlighted this movie because I don't think you really get movies like this today, especially ones that are PG that are family friendly by technicality. And I like that they were underdogs.
Starting point is 00:06:40 They were really bad for most of the movie. He's going to say, yeah. And his motivating factor initially was because he felt invisible. He felt disrespected. And then he wanted that love and adoration. but the real source to him winning was finding the altruism and his goals, which was to show the kids that they had someone to fight for them. And then the nun believed in that as well.
Starting point is 00:07:03 And just the way he went about it, granted some of his, maybe not, I don't know if methodology is the right word, but him treating Stephen kind of like crap and like getting them into the situation and then blaming Stephen when they went wrong. But I feel like they were able to come together and be on the same team at the end. also this movie had incredible pacing it's an hour and a half and it just flew by like that it doesn't waste any time and i feel like it's the perfect length for the movie that it is and i'm happy that it's just a movie about joy it's a movie about you know fighting for the thing that you believe in and you know overcoming these insurmountable odds in the face of you getting disrespected and kind of coming on the other side of that i thought that was great all right i've been told we're in the thick of basketball season now we're MLB is heating up and there's no shortage of games to track. So if you've ever wanted a smarter, more fun way to stay locked in, you've got to check out
Starting point is 00:07:58 prize picks. It's America's number one daily fantasy sports app. It's how this household keeps things exciting beyond just watching. Sometimes it's all we do. Don't even actually watch. And to clarify, prize picks isn't gambling. It's a skill-based fantasy sports app where you pick more or less on player stat projections. Think how many points your favorite garble drop or how many strikeouts are.
Starting point is 00:08:20 your ace will throw. Lingo. Terminology, you build a lineup based on what you know and if your picks hit, you win. It's real simple. You choose two to six players, pick more or less on their stats. And if your lineup hits, you can win real money. Up to a thousand times your entry. And with their flex play option, you can still win even if one pick misses. Payouts are fast, safe, secure, cash out in as little as 15 minutes. So here's the kicker. Football, goalie, kicker, soccer, terminology, lingo. Down the app and use code rejects to get $50 instantly after you play your first $5 lineup. Yep, $50 instantly, even if you don't win.
Starting point is 00:08:54 So if you're looking to make every game a little bit more thrilling, give prize picks a shot. It's fun, it's skill-based, and it keeps you in the action. Down on the app today, use code rejects. You get $50 instantly after playing your first $5 lineup. Price picks, run your game. I love this movie. Yeah, no, that was fast.
Starting point is 00:09:15 To your point, that was fascinating, that all movie, they were literally losing every single match. Because, yeah, no, no, for sure. And usually a lot of times in these kind of movies, usually you'll lose, lose, lose, win a couple, lose, win, and then the big match you win type of thing. But that was fascinating that they went the route of lose every single match until the very end.
Starting point is 00:09:38 But I thought that was different, but I like that again. Again, to your point, he did feel disrespected, he felt invisible. I agreed with all that. And also, too, this was always a dream of this. from the day he was a kid, and like, no, religion is more important. Forget your dreams. This is what you should do. This is what you are told to do.
Starting point is 00:09:58 This is what you're supposed to be. And he was finally going for his dreams, which I love that. And then also, too, he saw like, hey, this is what I'm fighting for. And I like to, for the nun as well, she said, like, this is a sin. But if you were doing it for something noble, then God will be with you. It's like, okay, now we can merge the two together. Yeah. And I like that.
Starting point is 00:10:19 I appreciated that. I like that we were doing something different formula in terms of we're not going to, we're going to change the formula in terms of they're not going to win some matches. We're going to lose every single one until the very end, but there's going to be a motivating cause for why he finally wins one, even though he's been studying moves his whole life, because this is something that's engraved in his DNA. So it's understandable that he's going to know the moves,
Starting point is 00:10:40 but now he just needs that final motivation to take him over the top, which I know is a trope that we've seen in The Flash and 50 million other, the show, 50 million other. things which is fine but it worked I thought it actually worked out here it didn't feel like a trope to me it actually worked yeah and I like the fact that this movie feels timeless because they don't ever give you a specific time period this takes place in all you know is it takes place after the period TVs exist live television and cars right that's it it could be I don't need to know it could be 2027 you know it doesn't matter yeah yeah and it's funny
Starting point is 00:11:15 because you you get a movie like this and Jack Black is obviously not um Hispanic man but you know i feel like this movie even though they cast somebody who was in mexico playing a lusador i feel like this movie wasn't trying to um make fun of or or talk down on to uh Hispanic people but like kind of lift up and embrace the culture and i think that the way that they represented him and his character and his accent was you know even even in line with that i thought that was it was all great yeah i also and last thing for me and then uh you can have your final word and then we'll get into some trivia and uh i'll ask you the rotten tomato stuff i did like also stephen i actually thought it was a earned his arc in terms of how he changed throughout the film in terms
Starting point is 00:12:04 of he said he didn't really care for orphans it wasn't really a person of religion and i wouldn't say by the end of the film he became a person of religion but he cared so deeply so deeply about nach that he was willing to pray for him yeah and also too like Like, he cared so deeply about what they were doing that he cared that these children were taken care of. So, like, he grew hard throughout the film. Like, before he was just, it was out for survival for himself and now it was survival for these children as well
Starting point is 00:12:30 and making sure that they were well-provided because he knows what it's like to be down in the dirt and to fend for himself. So I appreciate that, again, it felt very organic his arc throughout the film, Steve. And I like that when you take care of supporting characters like that and, like, their arcs actually feel earned and doesn't feel rushed or like,
Starting point is 00:12:46 wait, where did that come from? you know what i mean yeah no i heartily agree and i think that was interesting that in that final match i was the first time we see him like prey going into the ring even though he's a man at the cloth and the fact that he was wrestling this entire time like in secret because he felt like it was doing something maybe not like directly to to oppose god but he was doing something he uh maybe viewed selfish because he felt like if he were to be outed as this wrestler he would be removed from the church. I would just say, again, just a slight nitpick, even though I love this movie so much, my only nitpick, I would have liked maybe just one match of Ramsey's like annihilating someone
Starting point is 00:13:25 else, just so when we go into the live, because we've been told how amazing he is throughout the film, just going into that match, you're like, oh my God, I'm so scared for Nacho just because I've seen it and not been told it. Like, that's a good point. Just one match. Like, it could even be a 30 second thing or a minute thing, just where he's annihilating and destroying. someone like oh my god i hope not just gonna be okay you have a feeling he's probably gonna win but at least like visually you've seen what he's done to someone else but just the fact that we didn't see him wrestle one time before this i'm like i don't know but i know not just probably gonna win this i was my guess because the nun's gonna show up but again i still enjoyed it it was still
Starting point is 00:14:03 great but i would have just that's my only nitpick i would have is i would have like to just seen one match with ramsies yeah another nitpick i had was again a very small thing i wish the guy the other priest or friar or whatever who was trying to get in on the girl little mustache guy oh she's gotten some semblance of comeuppance and maybe kind of go back to that teasing of the plot line or like her outright
Starting point is 00:14:27 rejecting him or something I think that could be it's not an unnecessary thing but like they establish that I would like them to like pay it off or reference it in some way but I think the thing that you asked for is probably more pivotal pivotal to the plot
Starting point is 00:14:40 wait are you got rotten tomatoes up uh i do no no wait are you looking at ron tomatoes not yet okay okay i want to because i briefly looked it up rotten tomatoes so i know what the score was oh okay um so don't i'm gonna give it to you i but i but i have the budget up and i wanted to ask you what do you think the budget was okay um budget budget uh let's see i'm gonna guess 50 million $35. Wow. What do you think the movie
Starting point is 00:15:10 Worldwide grossed? Worldwide. Given that it is considered a cult classic I'm going to guess that it bombed so I'm going to say that I made $10 million.
Starting point is 00:15:20 No, no, no. $25 million. $99 million. Oh, did well. What the heck? Well, you got to remember $35 million. You usually got to double
Starting point is 00:15:29 that advertising. $70 million. Plus you got to give half that back. So at $100 million, they had to give back it probably didn't make a ton of money for them for the studio but it definitely
Starting point is 00:15:41 wouldn't call it like a bomb but all right we're going to run tomatoes now yeah okay I got it up okay so go critics first so critics again I enjoyed it but I know how critics operate I'm going to go 46% don't want to tell you don't want to say higher or lower well no just just tell me because we
Starting point is 00:15:59 got a we're in a little bit of a rush here so critics 39% I was close that was close that was close audiences audience i'm going to go 78 percent 55 percent okay that's that's insane dude this movie's hilarious this movie's great they weren't ready this was this movie was ahead of their time for 2006 that's baffling yeah um and then uh just really we'll do a couple because we got to get out of here but we'll do a couple trivias um so yeah let's do this all right uh the song that jerry that jack black
Starting point is 00:16:33 sings at the party was improvised. Jared has admitted that he didn't have time to come up with one. Jack quickly replied, leave it to me. I already got one. Cool. All right. I figured that song was improvised as we were listening to it. Yeah, I felt like it. During filming Jack Black recorded a series of
Starting point is 00:16:48 confessionals, which were uploaded onto the internet as a video podcast available from iTunes. They became one of the most popular podcast in the world. Wow. While filming a wrestling scene, Jack Black jumped from the ring and struck his head on a chair. This caused a black eye and a gash above his right eye, which needed stitches.
Starting point is 00:17:07 Jesus. Damn. I'll do one more. Oh, sorry. Troy Gentile, Young Nacho, also played the younger version of Jack Black's character at the same year in Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny. That's why I said he looks so familiar because I literally just watched that. Go check out that reaction with John and I. One to two more, and then we'll call it.
Starting point is 00:17:28 The Nacho Mobile is a customized version of a pedal tricycle. commercial commercialized in Mexico, which got an aftermarket upgrade by adding a scooter engine and wider tires. Other than the fight with Ramsey's at the end of the film,
Starting point is 00:17:42 Ignacio never wins any other time when he is in the ring. We talked about that. Last one. One of the moves that Satan's cavemen performs is the 619 by Ray Mysterio. And then also Silencio finishes Nacho off with a tombstone pile driver.
Starting point is 00:17:59 Yep, we called it. Yeah. I remember some moves. I remember some. it's been a minute but you know still ingrained in the memory yeah exactly it was great time that's fun yeah a lot of fun all right guys uh we are gonna be done for today thank you so much for watching we appreciate you guys and we'll see in the next one deuces
