The Reel Rejects - OBSESSION (2026) MOVIE REVIEW– IS BEAR OR NIKKI THE REAL VILLAIN! - FIRST TIME WATCHING

Episode Date: July 11, 2026

Is this the most unsettling and terrifying horror phenomenon of the decade?! Join Greg Alba and John Humphrey as they dive into their full reaction and movie review for Obsession (2026), the massive ...box-office sensation and viral psychological horror masterpiece from writer-director Curry Barker (Milk & Serial). In this video, we break down the insane twists, the escalating supernatural dread, and that absolutely haunting climax that everyone is talking about! When a fiercely lonely music store employee named Bear breaks a mysterious novelty toy known as the "One Wish Willow" to make his crush fall in love with him, he gets exactly what he asked for—but soon discovers that his deepest desires come with a dark, deeply sinister, and inescapable price. To help drive searchability and give credit to these unbelievable performances, here is the phenomenal cast behind the madness: Michael Johnston (Teen Wolf, The Orville) delivers a haunting performance as Baron "Bear" Bailey, the desperate romantic who triggers the nightmare. Inde Navarrette (Superman & Lois, 13 Reasons Why) is absolutely spellbinding as Nikki Freeman, capturing a terrifying, emotionally raw descent into a wish-induced nightmare. Cooper Tomlinson (Milk & Serial, that's a bad idea) stars as Ian, Bear’s close friend who finds himself caught in the horrific crossfire. Megan Lawless (The Hate U Give) plays Sarah Harper, whose tragic arc leads to some of the film's most gruesome moments. Andy Richter (Elf, Conan) steps into a grounded role as Carter Harper, the music store boss. We dive deep into the movie's most iconic and viral sequences, including: The infamous Jenga drinking game bottle scene, where Nikki's unsettling behavior culminates in a shocking act of self-mutilation. The widely discussed scalp twist and the visceral body horror that caught audiences completely off guard. The heartbreaking, emotionally devastating final showdown and ending sequence that serves as a brilliant, terrifying allegory for autonomy and obsession. #Obsession #ObsessionMovie #Obsession2026 #HorrorMovie #MovieReaction #MovieReview #TheReelRejects #Blumhouse #CurryBarker #IndeNavarrette #MichaelJohnston #PsychologicalHorror #Thriller #OneWishWillow Obsession 2026 movie, Obsession movie reaction, Obsession full movie review, Obsession 2026 ending explained, Obsession bottle scene, Obsession Jenga scene, Curry Barker Obsession, Michael Johnston, Inde Navarrette, Greg Alba, John Humphrey, Reel Rejects Obsession, psychological horror movies 2026, Blumhouse Obsession reaction, scary movies 2026, One Wish Willow horror movie, shocking horror movie endings Intense Suspense by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/... Starting point is 00:00:32 Someone's already claiming this is our year. Someone else said that last year too. A round of Jamison, Ginger, and Lime arrives at a table. Smooth enough for kickoff, smooth enough for extra time. New friends pulling up a stool. Debates about whether that was a handball. Cheers rising like a roar around the room.
Starting point is 00:00:50 Because match days are about the shared moments. Added Jameson to your match day lineup. Jameson, it's what you bring. Please enjoy our products responsibly. My name is Peter Parker, but I'm also... Spider-Man. This July, we're faced with a threat. I can be anyone.
Starting point is 00:01:08 The world may have forgotten Peter Parker. I'm just a neighbor, friendly neighbor. But he hasn't forgotten them. Sometimes Spider-Man has to do the hard thing. That's my responsibility. Talk to Banner? I didn't know you could get that big. Spider-Man, brand-new day in theaters, July 31st.
Starting point is 00:01:27 Thank you to Shopify for sponsoring this video. them in just a bit. Reject nation. We got an obsession with obsession. We just love getting blocked by Universal. So we figured
Starting point is 00:01:42 why not do it for a fourth upload? Because one of them got blocked and taken down. Then the second one is just completely demonetized.
Starting point is 00:01:51 But that's a good sweet 230,000 views that you all got to enjoy. And tear pages as of filming this officially completely demonetized.
Starting point is 00:01:59 We love Universal. Thank them. They're out here doing the Lord's work. We're keeping the studio going. All we think about it is just like, you know, we just want to fear. We don't understand why all of our friends who we know do this also are completely fine. That's it.
Starting point is 00:02:12 If you feel like you finish it, shouldn't be a montage or whatever, like, that's your opinion. I'm just saying that why, how come, why you specifically us? That's all I'm asking. That's all I'm asking. I got to make it personal. Anyway, got to put all that bullshit to the side because I literally know nothing about this. Other than I heard relationship, horror. movie. Indie Navarretti is her name? Yes, from Superman and Lois. Apparently she's amazing in this
Starting point is 00:02:39 and Curry Baker. Barker? Yeah. Oh yeah no, dang. I've been corrected on that many times. It's okay. It's like it's the back and forth. It's like half the discourse is just, is it, is there an R in there? I don't know. Anyway, uh, yeah, I've seen a lot of his YouTube channel they does with his buddy. A lot of their sketches are awesome. I've seen one of their short films. It was like 25 minutes long. It takes place on the moon. It's hilarious. Anyway. I'm excited to finally unpack whatever a relationship horror movie means. Heck yeah. Let's get that monkey paw going.
Starting point is 00:03:09 Let's go. Let's make a wish. All right, guys, well, we have watched obsession. The third people here to do it. Everybody gets a turn. Everyone he gets a wish. That was a gnarly. Hey, I want to thank everyone who has been going out.
Starting point is 00:03:36 out and supporting us at our Patreon page because, you know, it's been hard with the copyright and the strikes lately. So appreciate you guys. And, you know, another great way you can support the channel if you wish is rejectnation shop.com. So we're here to talk about obsession. And we got questions from our patrons as well. They get access to our shooting schedule. And we got quite a few here.
Starting point is 00:04:03 Absolutely. So let's just talk about our thoughts. and then kind of dive into it. Golly, this was a tour to force in a lot of ways. You know, as a debut goes. This is one of those, you know, a very assured debut. Yeah. And at the time of recording this,
Starting point is 00:04:25 you've actually also seen a different YouTube movie that I'm very curious about in terms of it's... It's not as disturbed. Really? Okay. But, yeah, It started saying, I forget the other guy on the channel. He's the best friend in this movie. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:41 It's about them going to space, living on the moon. Oh, that's fun. And it's pretty good, though. I like their sketches a lot. I think there's a really funny. That was like a short film that they made. That was a really good short film. Yeah, man.
Starting point is 00:04:56 So what? Cooper Tomlinson, there you go. Everyone's actually good. This is so good. And everyone talked about it, and you never ready. and I didn't know what to expect, like I said, during the reaction how I heard like, oh, I thought it'd be like a long-term relationship
Starting point is 00:05:10 and it's following like an abusive cycle or some shit when I heard relationship horror movie. So I was really not privy to like 99. I never saw the trailer. I never saw any of that shit. So I didn't know what to go into. But I see the hype around her performance. And it could not, it's not overhyped.
Starting point is 00:05:29 Like she's really, really like captivating on every front and Michael Johnson too is great it's just like it's so obvious who like this is not a real star in the movie is you know he's definitely the lead but it's like the star is definitely her and he's he's great
Starting point is 00:05:47 like he is really damn good in the film and I would it's last thing we want us for that to be overlooked but she really carries this and then like it's it's harder to get that down it really is because she's got to play it on like multiple levels
Starting point is 00:06:02 of the reality of what she's feeling whilst also the supernatural element of what she's going through and have a hint of who the Nikki is underneath whilst also portraying these things that happen in actual abusive relationships of like you know the coercion
Starting point is 00:06:21 the possessiveness the isolation the stalking the control emotional manipulation that can happen when like it because it's been both parties participate in it is like sometimes it feels like it is just one person but a lot i like the idea of the allegory of like he makes a wish so he's it's really this fucking his fault
Starting point is 00:06:42 but then it from being from starting this off at a place of control it brings all this shit out of her yeah so i like the relationship metaphors that they were illustrating because uh yeah it was it was scary that was that was like that was an anxiety like horror movie well yeah Yeah, and I mean, you can in real life find yourself in like abusive situations or situations that you don't realize are going to become sort of like twisted up or or sort of unethical in some way. And then you can find yourself trying to like bend to suit them and losing yourself into somebody else's needs and wants and all sorts of other stuff. And I mean, you know, obviously there's like a supernatural conceit at work here. So there are multiple ways you can approach that. But yeah, there is a sort of like, you know, toxic flow.
Starting point is 00:07:32 And it's like the more he gets what he wants. Like they approach it, they take it very approachably. And I think it's smart to play it because of all these kinds of stories of Rorschach test. Every like monkey paw story is a bit of a Rorschach test. And so like to make it really grounded and to be like a flippant wish and a sort of like, is it really real.
Starting point is 00:07:51 You know, at first is like a good way to, yeah, bring you into a character and create an interesting sort of debate even though, yeah, early on, it's easy to be like, this is really messed up. and then the further you go and the more you learn, like the situation stays messed up, but then in order to manage it without resorting to the extreme,
Starting point is 00:08:09 like, yeah, the things, the choices they get made and even the way in which ultimately when things get really grim, he seems to not eventually want to really take the responsibility. Like, yeah, he does kind of come out as the villain of the movie
Starting point is 00:08:25 in a lot of ways. But it's not like so writ large. Like it's got a fun, degree of nuance that you can I think take and interpret toward real life or take and have fun with as just a you know horror fable of sorts
Starting point is 00:08:39 well it's not two dimensional no no absolutely not that's what I'm saying yeah like it's it's so it's like it's so it's it feels like it's a disservice to just be like bears the villain of the movie because it's like technically you know if you have to give it to someone
Starting point is 00:08:54 it's but he's not like it is the definition of completely understanding why he's doing what he's doing without it being okay whatsoever i want that to be abundantly clear yeah like just i think we have a problem in this culture where sometimes when we know why someone does what they do we suddenly get them a lot of fucking passes and this is not one of those cases we're going to give a pass and it's not like it is it's just such a good job at like letting you be that audience member that it's so it's so it's so it's so easy to feel like oh she's the villain because that's how everyone else around his life will
Starting point is 00:09:37 interpret her from the dynamics that they get a C and be privy to yeah but it's like behind closed doors is the fucked up shit that he's done that they don't know about you know yeah and all this is like out of her control and she's she's essentially like fucking prisoner so yeah but I'll say like there's a lot of these questions that I'm previewing here so I'll talk I think it'd be good to talk about some of the other stuff for a second like we I was so impressed with um he also right this curry worker yeah yeah curry curry curry bexed baxter he he is his direction on this was phenomenal like what a what a tight grip on tension suspense and not overdoing it mm you know because so much is left in like the it's
Starting point is 00:10:25 just in performance a lot of it is in performance reaction to scary stuff happening off screen and I feel like there's something I was listening to a thing about IMAX and I granted I don't think this was shot in IMAX but that that ratio changes the way you look at the screen and I feel like in a movie like you're pointing out there's so much like self-consciousness and especially in the early parts before the wish there's so much like little reading of cues and and bringing you into just like a very relatable emotional state and I think the way they shot the movie really brings that out it like really spotlights and centers people's responses to stuff
Starting point is 00:11:03 and people's expressions and yeah all the things happening underneath the surface as well as things like then they choose their moments to be like here's something freaking in the background here's some negative space for you or whatever but I feel like in a movie that is like so ingrained in their
Starting point is 00:11:19 interpersonal twistedness it's a very personally shot movie which is just a cool choice and like so much like give their focus pullers like all the all the money because all these like slow push-ins where I have to imagine are slow zoom-ins where you've got to have somebody off to the side you know adjusting focus and everything you know it's it's really like deliberate but it doesn't feel slow it's well-paced it's got that editing that's like having fun with you but it's also not overbearing you know I mean buildup is so hard to get down on something like this to earn your finale where she's going to like murder someone and let let that be your all his lost moment and then going to like this fucking crazy your finale
Starting point is 00:12:02 that's like kind of gross you know it's like there's some like disturbing images like what they did with Sarah on the in the chair I was like holy shit it's awful I don't even understand Sarah's whole well yeah it's like she she took her she took her clothes and she did her tattoos up she basically like at first I was like is this necessary and then I was like
Starting point is 00:12:19 well I suppose you could argue its motivation is she brought the body home and is like well he's having feelings for Sarah now so I have to make myself Sarah so yeah she takes her clothes and all that stuff But even the car bit too is like so, so shocking and so unsettling and nasty and mean It's just like it's yeah It's it's it's really well done because it gets you on both levels like it allows itself to have its cake and eat it too
Starting point is 00:12:44 Like it's got that like high brow like ooh it's just icky because it's uncanny and then You know the more meat and potatoes just like here's a shocking image for you Yeah you know here's something disgusting and kind of mean and sad in a you know in the context It's also funny. Very funny. Very funny. It's a lot funny that I thought of me. Like you'd be scared of one minute, then laughing the next.
Starting point is 00:13:06 And I'm like, I don't know. You're sure I was supposed to be laughing right now. It's pretty funny. Yeah. But I never laughed at it in an insulting way. I always laughed at it because I felt like this is a funny moment for weird reasons, but never in a way where I'm like laughing at the film for a choice. They knew how to use the crossroads of height and absurdity.
Starting point is 00:13:25 Because like, yeah, like the fun is is occasionally. cutting outside the reality of this and having, yeah, the either like somebody's properly sized reaction to something or yeah, the sort of twistedness that only we know is at work and so yeah, like they get a lot of really good mileage for both
Starting point is 00:13:42 it's that, it's that thing like I'm sure a lot of people in talking about this are probably going to bring up like oh horror and comedy are so close together and like they are because of course and like having a situation like this too that is so casual at the start even the way he makes the wishes so casual and the wording of the witch is so casual.
Starting point is 00:13:56 And the wording of the wish is like flippant and kind of casual and that's kind of the key to everything going especially a ride Yeah, you know well that's a big part of what makes it difficult to ignore signs about the choices bear goes through with Because it's like you make you saw him make the wish and the wish was so It's just like dismissive and like not rooted at all and like this is really gonna happen you know or I really wish you know it's just so it's just such a throw away so dejected so it make it can trick the audience and of being like well it wasn't intentional you didn't intend to but that's kind of like i think one of the things about the movie that it's also saying is a lot of times in these power dynamics and in abusive relationships they don't intend to be like i'm gonna be an abusive guy yeah yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:14:51 it comes out and you don't even realize when you're doing it and i think that's part of the smartness behind how they illustrated bear especially is he like she's on the obvious side and then he's on the not so obvious side yeah but obviously super damaging and fucked up well he's your yeah he's your unassuming like friendly nice guy and and the wish he make at least the wording of the wish he makes is a narcissistic thing is like i wish he what does he say something about like i wish he loved me more than anyone else in the world yeah and like there is a lot of sort of like you can probably liking a lot of things here to like latent narcissistic abuse and, you know, codependency and things like that. Oh, for sure. For sure. Yeah, it's fun. It's like it's a rich thought experiment because, yeah, it's like it's not really that clean.
Starting point is 00:15:41 And yeah, like villain as a word for anybody seems a little over simple, even though there are times where you are like, yeah, dude, bear deserves whatever he gets out of this. And then other times where you're like, like, see you're kind of trying to do the right thing with like shit circumstances that yeah you didn't really fully realize you were gonna bring on to yourself but also yeah i don't know at a certain point you just gotta be honest yeah just kind of cut through the the the the the worry now that is that is the best movie i've seen all here yeah i mean it's like pure it's it's that pure cinematic thing where it's like yeah like a great concept a good cast uh you know every department is on point and uh yeah you know you can again it's like less than a
Starting point is 00:16:23 couple million dollars crazy that's the spirit of cinema right there all right here we go jadel bear starts out of someone you almost want to root for before his choice is become increasingly disturbing was there a specific moment where you realize he's crossed the line this isn't someone i should be sympathizing with anymore what was that turning point for you oh yeah that was obvious when it was right when she was asking like uh to be put out of her misery to be killed when she's speaking while she's sleeping and then he just immediately was like well what's so bad about being with me
Starting point is 00:16:56 I was like I don't know he's got fucking deserves to go yeah yeah it's the exact of fight because of the day every another boy I was like definitely like bad and not realizing like like taking seems like he's not truly taking accountability or responsibility for the fuck that part of his his involvement here and then that moment was the was like oh okay no he's he's he's aware he's he's proceeding forward yeah I would agree and there's that certain yeah it's like there's the self before the situation in a moment like that where you're like,
Starting point is 00:17:25 oh, yeah, you haven't, clearly in this moment you've not learned. It's way bigger than either of you. Yeah, yeah, I would agree. I want to go to next one. Hey, hey, I'm interrupting this video to let you know that if you got like a business idea rattling around your head, merch, art, whatever, Shopify is literally how you do it. Store products, payments, it's all there. Day one.
Starting point is 00:17:47 You don't build the machine. You just start selling. And no, I'm not blowing smoke here. I use phrases like blowing smoke now. Rejectnationshop.com. Bringing it stuff like this. That's been running on Shopify for years. Way before they ever paid us to say this.
Starting point is 00:18:04 That's what I call a natural brand deal. Because, yeah, we've been using it for such a long time. The store is legit. One of the main ways we're able to keep the lights on around here. You know, a big part of what got me early on there, check out. People actually finish buying no abandoned carts, no friction. and when they come back, one tap, boom, done. First time I watched orders come through that smooth.
Starting point is 00:18:27 I went, oh, this is a real business now. And since Shopify is handling, well, you know, the boring stuff, your time goes where it should, making things that people want. We stopped fiddling with a store and started building the brand, hiring more artists. And you could start that today at Shopify.com slash rejects. With Shopify, nothing stands between your idea and a real business. So go make it one.
Starting point is 00:18:49 You can start your free trial at Shopify.com. slash rejects. Start your free show at Shopify.com slash rejects. Thank you so much Shopify for sponsoring and supporting rejection. Netphilia. Thank you for chiming in. Curry Barker stated in an interview that he received an offer for $2 million to rewrite the script and make Bear the hero of the movie, which he obviously rejected. Why do you think the Keeping Bear's role as the villain is important to the execution of the film? I mean, I want to know what they tried to do to make him the hero. I guess he would have had to have freed her in some way. I mean, I think there's a lot here that speaks to, like, the mess and the way we navigate
Starting point is 00:19:30 ourselves further into the mess, even if we have, like, innocent intentions or whatever, and especially in relationships and stuff like that, you can get lost into cycles of abuse you never intended for, but you are very much complicit in. I don't know. I think the film just hits and gives you way much. more to think about and way more to pick apart and way more to discuss with people and way more to reflect on about your own existence if it ends the way it does because then all the all the questions that the movie now has to leave you like the movie it did all the endings possible kind of and ended
Starting point is 00:20:04 i think on the right one which is the saddest one and the worst one obviously i mean i'm not the right one she he didn't end on the right one but it did all the possible endings and kind of and like who would believe her yeah like I feel so bad for her because like her whole life is unless she can vamoose and like get to Canada change appearance and start fresh like yeah this is going to be awful for her um but yeah yeah I don't know it's it's like the consequence can't be I think if you make him the hero yeah it takes away the consequence and the consequence sucks I don't like to see this character punished this in this innocent girl punished um but it makes the bigger statement I guess the way they put it here.
Starting point is 00:20:51 I don't know what that. That feels like that's a whole different movie. Yeah. If Bear's the hero. I mean, I feel like we've spoken kind of extensively about the whole purpose of how they illustrate a bear in this movie. So,
Starting point is 00:21:03 yeah, but that's like, what the fuck with that? It's not even like it. You can't just like change the ending. Like you would have to make a lot of changes throughout the whole movie. The whole, you would have to completely remove the entire choice of Bear doing the wish.
Starting point is 00:21:16 Because that's the whole, thing is that it starts off in a state of control and wanting to be loved and it's a state of possessiveness you know yeah so the intention is you can't just change the ending like you would have to change that and then you have to change like every other so I guess it's like offering two million dollars for a rewrite yeah it's like you're offered two million dollars for a rewrite fucking off it's like yeah it costs to make this is a ton of money damn but it's like yeah you can't you'd have to change so much more than just the ending like you can't there's no way So we can have this journey and they're just changed the ending to make bear a hero.
Starting point is 00:21:51 Yeah, it's a cautionary tale. It needs to end on a note of caution. Yeah. Like it needs to end on a, yeah, this is what a monkey paw story is supposed to do. It's not supposed to end happy with your guy getting off the hook. Yeah. You know. Pierre the rejects.
Starting point is 00:22:06 Hello, the reject. Do you think Indy Navaretti deserves an Oscar for her performance? Yeah. Sure. Yeah. I mean, this is like, I mean, name another performance of the year. I don't know anything about. this movie. I didn't. I didn't know jack about it other than
Starting point is 00:22:22 Curry Barker behind a YouTube channel I watched from time to time made it relationship horror and this person I don't know. He's apparently fucking incredible in this movie. I know her name because I know her name without being able to call any of the work I've seen her in before because I've just I can't stop hearing about how people are raving about specifically her. Yeah. So it would be fucking a disservice to for them. They'd be stupid. They keep making like stupid choices at the Oscars to be like let's try to get some of the young people to watch our shit
Starting point is 00:22:55 I'm like the young people like honor the Avengers or something like do this like give actually recognize who's making an impact right now. Yeah, like honor young talent doing good work. You know, like this movie in general like the performance you could cite the writing or directing if you wanted to. I'm sure there are other, you know, it's a little harder to maybe make some of those arguments compared to other films of the year with by, vets but at the same time yeah like like this is a performance to demonstrate such a wide range and i don't know if any of the questions to get into it i know it's been said that curry barker had her do like a different like a serious version and a more like crazy heightened version for most takes
Starting point is 00:23:37 so they had like a variety of different choices and stuff and yeah she sells everything she has to do and in a way that's scary at times funny at times hard breaking at times it's all of it so I can't say enough about yeah yeah she's the thing you fear but she's not the villain it's fucking crazy you fear you fear you fear her and for her constantly simultaneously yeah and you feel so sad for that's a hard thing to pull off man you just want her to be free it's definitely not in like it's definitely not an over high performance that that was that was brilliant god and yeah and just the way like it's it's that thing too like the way that yeah men in the world get to make mistakes and stuff like that and then women are often left
Starting point is 00:24:18 holding the trauma. It's like she gets to be free. Yeah. But yeah, she's left holding the trauma, which is awful. Flev Doran, I am not the biggest horror fan. It's okay, Flev, we're fans of you. Mainly because I see through the tropes and don't get scared. But the car scene, I saw it a mile away that something is going to happen.
Starting point is 00:24:40 Yet the execution from the gruesome kill to Nikki's immediate switch and cadence was fantastic a leaf-rightening. How do you think this movie handled the horror tropes? Oh, that's such a great example of why, because it was so obvious she was going to show up. Yeah, I was surprised. I can't shoot a car door window in profile. Yeah. But it was the shock of the kill, but not even that.
Starting point is 00:25:02 Like, you can do shocking kills. It was specifically her reaction to when she, like, goes to come. It's making me laugh. Like, she goes to comfort him immediately after her. I was so sorry you had to see that. It's fucking hilarious. Just doing what I had to do. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:16 I think the, it's weird to call it a horror trope because it happens in real life is when an individual will self-harm themselves in order to, you know, bait someone into being there for them still when it seems like they're pulling away or trying or wanting to leave them, you know? So it's a thing that we've seen done a lot of movies, but I feel like the choices when they did it here, it was also like Nikki trying to try and trying to. breakthrough so I thought there was like kind of cool layers to whenever she did harm herself. They did it in a way that was, you know, it's like I felt like this movie has to go down that path eventually where she does shit to herself in order to be like, you're going to leave me or something. Yeah. Something to that degree. But it was always done in moments that I least expected it to happen.
Starting point is 00:26:05 It's that creeping. Yeah. It's that double. It's a unique tone to play because yeah, each of those instances carries both sets of weight, which is like a really unique thing to do, yeah, with like a trope of, yeah, of at least like, I guess, harsh interpersonal drama or whatever. And I mean, like, this was really cool because it did a classic kind of, again, like a cautionary monkey's pause story, but with just a really fluid and well assured, like, simple
Starting point is 00:26:34 but effective execution. And like, there are jumps and things, you know, you have even your moment in the room where she's like, moving all funny. And I don't quite know why. And that stuff kind of flies as just sort of like, I guess it's just a sort of effect of the fact that this is a supernatural happening. But even then in those moments, I'm sort of able to, it allows you to head cannon in what I think is an appropriate way where you're like, well, maybe that's, the movement is so weird at times because she's getting more, you know, headway on trying to break through whatever this wish curses. And then it resets again. And they build that in, which I thought was a good thing to do.
Starting point is 00:27:11 Yeah. Where it's like, you know, whenever the wish, the reality of the wish gets challenged too hard, it like snaps back into place or something like that. So, yeah, I feel like this movie did a nice job of like bringing, you know, a handful of classic horror tropes, but also just doing them in a way where you're not really thinking too hard about them because the story and the character work is going, you know? Yeah. Yeah. True, true, true. um dana minimo curry barker stated that Nikki is not demonically possessed
Starting point is 00:27:43 instead the wish itself has warped her while the real Nikki is still trapped beneath he has described it more like they're essentially two Nikki sharing one body do you guys think he achieved that goal yeah I feel like we picked up I feel like that was very obvious
Starting point is 00:27:56 I mean she states that I know there's that scene where she's asleep and she's like she's not here right now the whole movie it felt like when she's especially she's like no I think it was like There was a scene that reminded us to get out. And I was like, oh, because I can get out. There's another person in there.
Starting point is 00:28:10 I wonder if that's the point if that's a direct tribute on his part. Yeah, when you did that, it's like, how can you not think of get out if you can get out and maybe maybe have it? But that to me was like the clear indicator that the real Mickey wants to come out. Yeah, yeah. And I think that that absolutely shows because there's, you could call it a demon and they do that thing with her voice where it gets all deep. But it definitely does feel like, oh. there's a new Nikki here whose sole purpose is to love bear you know well yeah that's like this in relationships and like identity isolation occurs so i feel like it's it's a cool it is a cool metaphor
Starting point is 00:28:45 for when you push down your truest self and embody something else in the name of trying to keep someone to love you because you've been coerced into it somehow you know yeah so yeah lose your individual it's cool movie autonomy or at least one of us does yeah yeah really cool and and too yeah is like the way they hew the reality of the wish. I feel like that. Yeah, it's cool to get like something like this where it's like, yeah, it's not specifically a demon. They have the thing on the call, which is just enough.
Starting point is 00:29:15 You're like, okay, there's like something out there. Somebody works at the place that makes these things. But also who seems to have access to the weird other realm of existence that, you know, the souls are on because you hear like wailing in torment. So yeah, I liked without getting too explicit. Yeah, that they suggest just enough. It's just a new version of her. that's like affected her like a virus.
Starting point is 00:29:37 Yeah, it's pretty good stuff. Riley Peterson, I was surprised to see you guys doing three separate reactions for this movie, although I understand since it has been everywhere since it came out in theaters. Did this live up to the hype among the rejects enough to consider doing more multi-reactions in the future?
Starting point is 00:29:57 Well, I made that choice because I feel like for a movie, like, I just got the vibe that there were three people no offense to like reaction channels I've done like three people for this movie it's just like we have what we have access to here
Starting point is 00:30:14 it was like well we have the opportunity to make it a more intimate experience I feel like this would probably work better the less people involved and sometimes we do reactions where there are like three to four people in a video but this one in particular I was like I might be fun to like watch like have the girls pair off
Starting point is 00:30:31 although I don't know I don't know the details what happened to Terrapage. I'm not going to act blind to it. I don't know the details what happened in Tara Page's reaction. All I heard is like they kind of didn't get the movie and I don't know what that meant
Starting point is 00:30:43 or like whatever their whatever their interpretation was of it has not gone over. I don't know. I have no idea what they thought. And Nikki deserved all this. She chose his life. If they think I don't know.
Starting point is 00:30:58 It's kind of, it's weird because it seems so like obvious that I'm like what did he think happened? Exactly, because I'm curious to find out. But because I had to intentionally avoid it because I didn't want it to be ruined for me. Because I feel like if I got the specifics of what went down, all I heard is like their interpretation, as Alex told me, is that their interpretation is not the interpretation that they may be not a habit. So, okay. So it seems funny.
Starting point is 00:31:25 I'm very excited. And I thought like it gets to because like they're, they're around the same age, Tara and Page and pages of mom. So I thought it would be fun to get like a different dynamic there and Taylor watches a lot of these like fucking reality shows about relationships and then like Roxy and Jackie are very specific type of dynamic too. Like it was just really much about like specific dynamics and then I don't know we John and I well and we like horror and uh I fucking have so like jealous and impressed and by all these like YouTubers who are making movies that are the genre that we love is so it's like it's just crazy to see and and how when vastly impressive it is. and it's like, well, yeah, these guys deserve it and earn it from what they're doing. So I personally really just wanted to watch it because of that admiration.
Starting point is 00:32:13 It's felt like just, yeah, just because of how much of a cultural moment it's been. I'm grateful we got to do this. And I feel like this is a movie that blends it. It's a movie comprised largely of like single shots on two characters in a scene. So having two people to watch it seems like the appropriate about. And too, watching this was cool just because like having,
Starting point is 00:32:31 I've only seen of the YouTuber movies Iron Lung and this. And you watch Iron Lung and you're like, all right, I'd ever do that. Then you watch this and you're like, filmmaking is attainable. You're like, it's good. I don't know if I can ever make something as good
Starting point is 00:32:44 and effective as this, but I'm like, you could get your friends together or some people you know are good and you could make a this, you know, if you wanted to. And that's really fun and inspiring. Yeah, yeah. I think I've seen them all now.
Starting point is 00:32:56 I don't think I've seen everyone. Oh, lucky. You've got to rank them now. This is definitely, number one. And what? Talk to me. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:05 And back rooms. Yeah. An iron lung. Or what's, I mean, this would not make people happy, but I would put Shelby Oaks above iron lung. Okay.
Starting point is 00:33:14 I like them both. Okay. I do. I like them both. Okay. And I know it's like the cool thing is they hate Shelby Oaks. But it's like I, yes,
Starting point is 00:33:23 I interviewed Chris Duckman, but I've interviewed plenty of people where I've gladly not like their shit. Yeah. Yeah. It's happened plenty of times. Sure, sure, sure. Hey. And yeah, but no, it's, I like them, I find, I find, like,
Starting point is 00:33:39 Shelby Oaks and Iron Lung are, like, entertaining in their own unique ways. And, yeah, I think Iron Lung is more ambitious and unique, though, for sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It is, like, an undertaking where you're like, damn, like, any gripes I might have about the movie, fucking hats off for getting it done. But I have way, I have more fun watching Shelby Oaks, even if I feel like it is not as ambitious or as overall like daring and creative in that sense,
Starting point is 00:34:07 I had way more fun watching Shelby Oaks. See, I think the whole spectrum. I'm excited to see the rest of them because the whole spectrum is interesting, and I think it's cool to see like people coming out of here aiming in all different directions, you know? Well, I haven't seen everyone's debut film. I haven't seen bring her back.
Starting point is 00:34:22 I haven't seen that yet. But at this point, I'm like, no, they're just directors. Yeah, now it doesn't count it anymore. But I've seen everyone's debut now. And this is like, this easily is the top spot. Like comfortably the top spot. Yeah. Hats off.
Starting point is 00:34:39 McCoy, Oh, no. Hi. I just became a patron. This is the first time I'll ask a question. If you could ask Curry Barker one question about obsession, what would it be? Was there any scene or character choice of me to think I need to know why he did it this way? Yes.
Starting point is 00:34:51 And it might not be the question. Like when I sit down or I appreciate the comments that we get whenever like myself or Corey, interviews because it's like really spent a long time trying to think like what is they not been asked but I would ask specifically was it a continuity error at the beginning of the movie with the clock
Starting point is 00:35:10 because it's literally like 1208 and then the next shot unless I'm like what time it was like 1655 I think it was 655 and the zero was obscured okay but still it was a completely 16 yeah it was a completely
Starting point is 00:35:26 different time and I was a completely different time and I was was so like, wait, what? I'm so like, I'm so like, is this a choice? Because I feel like this is as an editor. I think he would notice that, right? Because I know there's like editing choices. Sometimes you got to make.
Starting point is 00:35:39 They're like, if the audience hasn't, you know, fucking, if the audience isn't really paying attention to it, they're not really going to, sorry. Let me, let's in the drop box there. Let me see here. Uh, do, do. One sec. I want to just get my facts right since we're already here.
Starting point is 00:35:56 Yeah. What is it, John? And the rock scene Jackie Folder. That's me. Oh, there you go. Okay. Let me just go to this scene. I would ask Curry Barker, what's all, with all the cat hate?
Starting point is 00:36:06 Why you hate cats, man? You know, when he had cats, dude. He did more cat shit in this movie. I would ask Curry Parker if this is his real grandma's house. I think the trope of killing animals and horror movies to elicit scare and sadness is a, is used better here than most movies. Okay, so it says 1208. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:23 It says 1208, clearly. Yeah. And then when it goes to the master shop when he's getting him, it's 1655 or 6.55. So there's no way this is 6 or, or no, it's a few hours later. Or a military time. Or somehow it's the afternoon. Yeah, like that is definitely like we can see it right now. It is neither afternoon nor is it probably 6 a.m.
Starting point is 00:36:46 And I feel like he would have, unless it's just something they decided to commit to and keep. But I'm like, is this, is it a clue as distortion of reality or something like that? wonder because it's one of those things it seems like it's easy to fix it is like was i fucking tripping balls i felt like it got a little wider the the bars i think they did i i know i guess that films are doing the whole movie but apparently not that's weird yeah i thought i thought they were getting wider if the frame was getting wider but apparently not no all right i guess i would ask him about the aspect ratio it seems like just a specific thing to want to do and again i i i have my own interpretation as to like what flattered that but it's like a thing i'm not used to see
Starting point is 00:37:26 anybody who's not shooting an iMacs do yeah true you know uh last one from iran johnson aaron johnson hey guys love the channel i'm not a big horror thriller fan but i saw this in theaters never had chills run through my body like that while watching a movie indian ever ready gave an incredible performance do you guys think this is a candidate for movie of the year absolutely yeah undoubtedly absolutely top five top three even maybe it's like this or uh progettele mary Or I assume the Odyssey if everyone's initial feedback bodes well. True. I assume it probably must in this case.
Starting point is 00:38:04 It's freaking Nolan. Yeah. This is, I hope this is not overlooked because there's plenty of people. It exceeds horror at a certain point because so many people have said, like I don't like horror, but people kept talking about this is just a good movie. I have to go watch it.
Starting point is 00:38:21 And so many people have watched it solely due to that fact. and many of those people love it who don't really make people who don't love horror or end up loving this movie rightfully so and it's also critically praised its audience praised
Starting point is 00:38:34 they'd be it'd be foolish not to consider this as one of the best movies or get a best picture nom or like keep that in mind by the end of the year I know there's like way more months left in the year
Starting point is 00:38:44 but for where we're at in July there's not much competition so far in the first six months grand there's a lot of movies still I've been seen so I'm kind of speaking out of my ass here
Starting point is 00:38:54 time if we're talking about impact cultural impact this is one that it exceeds you know yeah it's just so tangible and it's so very pertinent to the now and I feel like this is a movie that manages to rest at like a very fun crossroads
Starting point is 00:39:10 for horror because like it's got pulp stuff and it's like not hard for your average audience on a Friday night to go out and have fun with but it's also you know verging on what they you know elevated horror where it's like it's really well thought out and it's really well performed and it's really you know cinematic but in a
Starting point is 00:39:28 restrained kind of way so i feel like yeah this is the rare treat that like is good for yeah like you're more you know meat and potatoes horror fan or you're more like you know highbrow cinema horror fan like it's kind of having its cake and eating it too which is lovely like if you can hit those two kind of ends of the spectrum i think you're in really good shape as a movie true Also, it was Curry B. You were right. On the phone. Curry Barker voice cameo.
Starting point is 00:39:58 It's appreciate him showing restricts. He's in a lot of his own sketches. So I appreciate him showing the restraint. I was expecting to see him show up at some point. And so actually, I think it's funny. Now that's the new YouTuber rule. It's like Cooper top line events in a market pie. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:11 Yeah, exactly. You either are in every shot or because it's a weird thing. It's like, because you're used to seeing them both. And usually Cooper is like, you know, lead a lot of the sketches and stuff. So, like, it's fun to see Cooper get the supporting role where you're like, hey, really good job in like a motion picture of feature film, you know? And then Curry Barker, I feel like if he showed up, it would be a little too much. Yeah. That'd be like, oh, no, no, no, we're in sketch territory now.
Starting point is 00:40:33 True. I mean, I feel like if they were both sharing the screen, it would pull out from the audiences who do know them and probably be expecting a different vibe. Yeah. He should have showed up as a really young bartender just, you know, in the background. Yeah. Telling Johnny Cage, he has to go compete him all. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, this is his wish.
Starting point is 00:40:50 All right, guys, well, obsession. We're the last run here at Real Rejects. Hopefully this is public or monetized for at least a couple days. That would be nice. Yeah, that'd be nice. For a weekend. See you guys. That's the wish.
