Starting point is 00:01:40 Am I wrong or did it feel like a little bit of an abrupt ending? No, no, definitely felt abrupt. Because they planted a lot of seeds that then didn't kind of... Oh, Guillermo produced it. I don't know. Oh, John Boyega also produced it. Okay. Give me the names of the people.
Starting point is 00:01:56 I got to look. Yeah, you can look it up. But while you're looking it up, If you're listening to us on Apple or Spotify, if you don't mind dropping a rating, we would appreciate it. Also, if you would like to look as cool as Roxy and myself, RejectNationShop.com, help support us. Yeah, why don't you look that up? And then you can give us your thoughts, Roxy, on what you thought of Pacific Rim uprising. Oh, Lauren Balf did the score.
Starting point is 00:02:20 I love Lauren Bollf. Great composer. Kaylee Spaney. I'm such an idiot, dude. I don't even know who that is. Oh, my God. I've been talking about her all week. The little girl in this, not little girl,
Starting point is 00:02:32 but the young girl in this, is a girl named Caleb Spanii. She was in Priscilla. She was in Bad Times at El Royale. She was in on the basis of sex. She was in Civil War, if you just saw that. She's like the It Girl, the upcoming It Girl. I can't believe I didn't pull that.
Starting point is 00:02:50 I'm so pissed at myself. But most importantly, I just watched her in this movie that I was just talking about called How It Ends, which I'm obsessed with. This is like a small apocalypse movie that was so great. And I literally watched that two weeks ago. Kaley Spaney is a star. And she is like, now you're seeing her name nonstop.
Starting point is 00:03:07 You're about to, now that I said it, now that you're hearing it, she's in the new alien movie, Romulus. Oh, she's an alien movie? She was just cast in Wake Up Dead Man, the Knives Out movie. Like, she's like the new It Girl. I haven't seen any of those. Obviously, Alien Romulus has not come out, which I can't wait to see that. But I really liked her a lot in this.
Starting point is 00:03:26 She was terrific. She's so good. I can't believe I didn't pull that Oh, Adriah Arjona Oh my God That's what our name is I can't believe I blew this I was like that's the girl from Morbius
Starting point is 00:03:39 I think it's the girl from Morbius And it was the girl from Morbius But also she was on true detective I'm so mad at myself Because I had both of those And she's the girl from Andor She plays Bix I'm so mad at me today
Starting point is 00:03:56 Those were all within my reach And I didn't get any of them Like am I kidding? You made up for it with your predictions Ivana Sankno Let's see how I knew her She's in Asoka Look who the visual consultant on the film was
Starting point is 00:04:11 Well I don't feel like he consulted The same way he did to his own name. I was going to say That's a little shocking to hear that So she was in the spy who dumped me Asoka Okay The blonde Russian girl Oh she was in Asoka
Starting point is 00:04:25 That's where I knew her from. Shinhati. Is that what you were trying to tell me? Just now? No, no, no. From earlier when you're like, where do you know her, the Russian girl from when we were out? When I was like, I know you know her too, because I just couldn't think I couldn't pull it.
Starting point is 00:04:38 I knew she looks so damn familiar. All of these kids have been in things that I recognize. Adrian Arjona, I don't, or Arjona or however, I just can't believe that I didn't pull. But the Kaylee Spaney one is crazy because I talk about her nonstop. She's just younger here and I didn't recognize. She's terrific. Oh, she's in everything.
Starting point is 00:04:59 Man, I'm so sorry to the people out there. Okay, so here are the things. Here my thoughts on the movie. Here we go. I actually think that it was fun. I enjoyed it. It was a nice ride, cool visuals. I love Boyega.
Starting point is 00:05:14 I really like Scott Eastwood. I like Adriana, too, but apparently I forgot who she was. I liked all the actors. I liked the chemistry mainly between. Kaylee Spaney and John Boyega. But there were certain holes in this for me that were like, wait, what? The Kaiju won. I'm curious if we watch back if we catch what happened.
Starting point is 00:05:35 They specifically said there are three, a cat four, a cat four, and a cat five. I feel like I missed something. Maybe we took them all out and they looked more similar to each other. So I wasn't totally getting it. Also, I feel like we set up that thing with jewels and we never, that never played out, that love triangle. Maybe they were leaving that for the next one. Also, I feel like of the kids, like we talked about a little bit throughout, the dynamic
Starting point is 00:06:01 wasn't, was there, but we didn't get to explore it enough. So it's like their lives were not as important to me. And we didn't get much backstory there. And then also, I was hoping for a Charlie Hunnam appearance. And then also the Charlie Day part, like I kind of want to know more. What, so what does that mean? Can he fight this? How did him syncing up with that one now, like, allow them to be.
Starting point is 00:06:26 essentially Kaiju Yeagers, like I wanted more details on the process. Yeah. So those are some of my thoughts. Even though I liked it, there just were some, it was missing some stuff. For sure. No, I echo a lot of your sentiments. I still had a lot of fun with it. I definitely liked the first one a lot more.
Starting point is 00:06:43 It just felt more epic and scope and just I was just more emotionally invested in the characters. Having said that, I like you. I really did like John Boyega. What's the other? I'll just keep coming to you for that. No, you've got to learn her name because she's coming up. Kaylee, Spaney. Spaney.
Starting point is 00:07:01 Kaley Spaney? Mm-hmm. I really like Kaylee Spanii a lot in this film. I just, I like the backstory we got. Obviously, we get into the memory of what happened like we did with Mako in the previous film. I was sad about what happened to Mako. I understand, like, story-wise, why they had to do that. It was obviously a good, did you call that, by the way, prediction-wise?
Starting point is 00:07:18 In my head. Oh, okay. So it doesn't count. It still does. You work right about everything else. But anyways, point being, I was saddened by that. you know, because we were so emotionally invested in that character from the first film. I also did feel that the dynamic between her and Boiega in terms of the history.
Starting point is 00:07:34 I really did feel that. I mean, they only had a couple scenes together, but I really did feel like they were brother and sister. So I thought they did a good job as actors, as what, you know, just again echoing what you were saying in terms of, I thought the acting was really well done. But as the chemistry and the interactions between John Boyega and Kaylee, Spaney? Yes. I thought the chemistry between them was terrific. just from the beginning, you know, that first scene that they had together with Scrapper, when they were fighting in there just to...
Starting point is 00:08:04 That was fun. Yeah, no, that was great. I love Scrapper. Just to the way their characters developed and the relationship developed throughout the rest of the film was like an older brother, younger sister type of development, which makes sense because he lost his older sister in this film, so it makes sense that she would kind of fill the void in that sense, but also, too, like, he was taking her on in that way, too. but I just, I love their relationship.
Starting point is 00:08:25 I love their interactions. What did you think about the fact that Kaylee Spaney's character has pretty much an identical backstory to macos? It did feel very similar. It didn't bother. I mean, because it makes sense in this world that a lot of people are going to have that traumatic type of backstory with, you know, the kaiju. Yeah, of course, it's not like very rare in this world.
Starting point is 00:08:50 I just think it's interesting. We didn't call to it as much because, like wouldn't have been in cool then to see maco have a conversation with her like yeah me too or to have john boyega be like you know i know my sister's not here to tell you this anymore but she had like he he does say you know we took her in but he doesn't really give the back story and maybe he doesn't know it but the difference for um cayley spainey spainey god dang it uh the only difference for cayley spainy's character uh was like unlike maco she didn't you know have a family take her in like Idriselba and John Boyega's character.
Starting point is 00:09:26 She was literally had to fend off on her own. So this was her new family as Scott Ezer tells her. But I mean, for years, she was completely on her own. So, I mean, they were different in that dynamic from her and Mako. So, but it would have been cool if they would have had a conversation just before, you know, her demise. But again, I really liked her character a lot. She was fantastic. She had really strong charisma on screen.
Starting point is 00:09:47 And I really, really enjoyed watching her in this. And again, just the way she was able to control her mind in the kaiju, I thought, that was very organically done. It didn't personally, to me, feel rushed. Because, again, I know that was one of our complaints in the first film, like, oh, Makko's able to just control her emotions now. So I thought, for the most part, I thought it was pretty good in this one. Like you, I would have liked to.
Starting point is 00:10:08 Again, I don't need to know every single thing about all the characters on the team in terms of the family. But maybe we give them all nicknames, so at least we know, like, a personality trait with you do them or something. I just would have liked a couple more scenes with them just to feel, again, I didn't want anything to happen. to them, but I wasn't as emotionally as invested in that group, but I just would have liked a few more scenes with them personally. Yeah, I agree. I also think that the way that this movie started with the partying, like John Boyega, partying and raging, I would have liked to see, like, that kind of was irrelevant, them, because we saw him get away from everybody, whatever. And he kind of has that like Indiana Jones type vibe and moment. And either that come back in some way or that same spirit and energy. she like it just seemed when we started like it was going to be so much fun and light and like sneaky tricky and then we kind of dropped that and John Boyega's character does hold
Starting point is 00:11:06 on to elements of that but have been cool to see that kind of implemented throughout that party kind of feel and vibe and obviously that was because the war was over and now we're starting back up again but I completely agree with you I think once Mako you know once she died I think like he wasn't in that type of mood to do that. But I totally agree with you. It would have been nice to still get that kind of character trait throughout the rest of the film. With the kids maybe or something, you know?
Starting point is 00:11:31 Like we did see them kind of break the rules a little bit. But like I don't know. I just the party vibe set the tone for me like with the music and whatever that this was going to be one thing and then it kind of wasn't. I am curious about some, funny enough, trivia. More facts on this because you see, you know Stephen tonight more than I do, even though I've seen the two things that you reference.
Starting point is 00:11:52 Yeah, that's all I really know him for. I'm sure he's done several other things. But Daredevil on Netflix, which obviously is, y'all mostly agree. Oh, he did Angel, too. Oh, okay. I never, I watched all of Buffy, but I never got to Angel. But, I mean, he's just, in my opinion, he's a- 44 episodes of Angel, 66 episodes of Smallville.
Starting point is 00:12:14 Smallville. Oh, he did some of Doll House, some of Spartacus, Daredevil. He does a lot. A lot of shows. It's got a lot of upcoming things as well. I mean, again, it's still, it's still in spots felt epic and scope. I don't know. Did it feel a little bit like it, just because in comparison, in making the comparison
Starting point is 00:12:35 to the first one, did it feel like a very big budgeted TV film? A little bit. Yeah. Like a huge budget TV. A very, very big budgeted. It was the way the shots were done. Yeah. Which, you know, I love TV.
Starting point is 00:12:49 Oh, yeah. I love TV too. There's no disrespect on that. at all. You want to hear some things about this movie? I would love to hear some things about this movie. One, I'm so sorry, I just, I don't mean to cut you up. I just wanted to say, we kind of talked about it during the reaction. I just wanted to really quickly, what did you think, in case it got it out, what did you
Starting point is 00:13:07 think of the design of the, the Yeagers and this? Because I think, you know, some of the, I mean, Gypsy still obviously looks epic and cool. And I love Scrapper. I think Scrapper was awesome. But I don't know. Just again, it's just didn't have that same. touch. I think like that sleeky touch that you mentioned as the one as the first film. I mean,
Starting point is 00:13:28 I love what del Toro did in the first movie and it just did in that orange one. But I'll let you do your thoughts on. I think Del Toro is unmatched with his visuals. He really is. So it's like unfair because have this been the first one, I think it would have been like, they look amazing. And then had, and Del Toro's been the second one. We've been like, oh, that's like one up the first one. For sure. Because I was expecting the quality of Del Toro, then in this one, it's, while this stands out and still, like, a lot of movies don't hold a candle to this one in terms of the design. True. It just didn't have that rawness of the kajou.
Starting point is 00:14:03 Yeah. And, yeah, just maybe there was the orange one in Del Toros. I don't remember it, but it does seem weird. Like, I know that this sounds nitpicky, but as a war tactic, right, we have camo for a reason. Like, most of these are, like, dark colors, grays, dark blues, dark greens. And then, like, bright orange. And it's like, what do you use that one for? Like, what is that for in case it's in a fire and it needs to be hidden?
Starting point is 00:14:29 Like, it's just, that was kind of strange to me. And then the actual kajju, so not the Yeager's, but the kaiju, they looked creepy. But when they combined with the Yeagers, you know, I was like, this could be even cooler. The concept idea for that is so damn cool. And I feel like if Deltora was directing this, like it would have been even, again, no disrespect to Stephen And I and the people worked on it. I just feel like with Del Toro, like that idea is awesome. But I feel like with.
Starting point is 00:14:57 But I also have questions about that idea. Because like what exactly happened there? I don't know. Do you feel like you could explain why? I just suspended disbelief. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, totally. And I think that's fair.
Starting point is 00:15:11 Okay. Let's see what's going on here. Germo De Toro stepped down as director in order to direct shape of water. I heard that. which went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Good choice. Nice up. In an interview with Collider, I used to work there.
Starting point is 00:15:28 In November of 2014, Caramel Del Toro talked about setting the stage for Pacific Rim 2, stating it's a few years after this one. It's not an immediate follow-up. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after, what happens to the Yeager technology, once the Kaiju are not a threat. It's quite a jump. Del Toro did not return to direct this, though. Um, okay. Let's see what else. Germo Latoro did not return to direct a sequel.
Starting point is 00:15:56 However, he did produce, write the story for the movie. So I didn't know that he wrote the story. I didn't see that on the cruise. James Gunn filmed a cameo as a DJ, but it ended up being deleted from the finished movie. Gunn joked on Twitter that the scene was omitted so that his character could be saved for his own spin-off movie. Okay. I was going to say, I don't remember seeing James Gunn, but then when you said it was omitted. I was like, okay.
Starting point is 00:16:19 It was reported in 2016 that Charlie Hunnam would not be returning as Raleigh Beckett. Oh. Stephen S. Tonight, one hour, 26 minutes, and six seconds, his face appears on the billboard that the Yeager lands on. Huh. I didn't know that. Okay. Cool. Okay.
Starting point is 00:16:38 I always love when directors insert themselves into their films. Yeah, me too, because I would hella do that for sure. I would do that, too. Unlike the first Pacific Rim, this film does not. not include an end credit scene. Yeah, we were waiting for that. I mean, the way they set it up, too, I really thought. I guess that scene with Charlie Day and John Boyag, I guess that's technically
Starting point is 00:16:59 their end credit scene. Oh, this is the first feature film for Kaylee Spaney. That's cool. That's great. I'm excited to see her now. I mean, the other films and shows you mentioned, I need to watch her in, but Alien Romulus, I really can't wait to see that film and her in it. She's going to be great.
Starting point is 00:17:17 Those are honestly the big ones Those are the big ones, okay But yeah, again, I still had a good and fun time with this one I do think the idea I again love Stephen Denight I would have still loved to have seen Del Toro do But I still think Deni did a competent job on this I do find the idea fascinating
Starting point is 00:17:37 Like how does the world react to defeating the kaiju And I think there were some really good ideas in here Yeah You know Probably a story done by Del Toro Yeah true true but um yeah i mean there's definitely not as good as the first one but i still had fun it was still entertaining a lot of the comments said to us that people really don't like this one and
Starting point is 00:17:58 i think that that is fair of course if you don't love it but i definitely felt better about it than a lot of the comments yeah yeah i think if comparing it to the first one it's it's nowhere it's not on the same league in my opinion no no the first one was amazing it blew me away yeah for sure But I still thought this was fun and entertaining. But, I mean, yeah, again, it's all subjective. So if you really dislike this one, I totally understand. It's, you know, after watching that first one, I get it. Do you think it makes somebody a really bad person to not like a movie?
Starting point is 00:18:27 Well, you don't like Man of Steel. And I disrespect your opinion on that. So you are such an evil and bad person. That's what I'm saying. No, of course not. No, hey, look, seriously, it's all subjective at the end of the day. It's how you feel about a film. It's, you know, how it hits you in a certain way.
Starting point is 00:18:40 So no, it's, I just, I don't know why people, you know, know, come at people so aggressively for having a difference of opinion on a film. I always hope that everybody likes everything because people work really hard. Like, I was something I was noticing about this movie when the credits are rolling. And obviously, so many, thousands of people work on every big blockbuster. But this seemed like it had more names than usual. Like, it was going for a long time. And I was like, yeah, to make a movie of this size, it really does take a village.
Starting point is 00:19:08 Yeah, it does. Like, again, and I always try to be as respectful as possible to, like, if something, if I don't personally like something to go hey it just wasn't for me you know not not my cup of tea but you know if you like it terrific fantastic having said that again i found this fun and entertaining not on the level of the first film but i would still recommend it just as a follow-up to the first one just to see what happens and i think i think the chemistry and dynamic between john boyega and you got it you've got chris spainey kaley kaley you got the last name oh kaley spainey yeah Yes. Oh, my God. I think their chemistry, like, really won me over. I just, I love the dynamic and the interactions between those two characters. I think that was the heart of the film personally for me. And, you know, just from that, I would recommend the film. But, again, just not in the same, you know, league as the first one, but I still enjoyed it.
Starting point is 00:20:02 Yeah, I'm with you. But anyways, what did you guys think of Pacific Rim Uprising? Are there other films like this or the first film that you would like to see Roxy, myself, or anyone on the Reject Nation here react to? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments. And yeah, love you guys. See you next time.
