01:37In three, two, one.All right, let's get into some SpongeBob now.Yep, we're playing SpongeBob movie Primetime Emmys one-time Nominated 2019.If you are listening to us on Spotify and iTunes, we just watch Paranorman for the veryfirst time. I have a lot of love for the style, the aesthetic, the visuals, the creativity, the pure wonder. I definitely had moments where I was aware it was skewing younger, but it had enough like, I found every five minutes or so there'd be a joke that would bring me back in. So that really worked me and the visuals were nothing short of miraculous. That was a really special experience. Yeah, and also too, if you like these teas, rejectnation shop.com.Look cool like Christmas too. Yeah, no, I agree with you. Also, the visuals, I mean, like I mentioned quite a bit. I really like to display my affection and appreciation for those that takes such amount of time and care because I know, I mean, it's just like us. When we mentioned like to the editors, like Prepper and all that, like it's a lot of hard work. And especially with these kinds of visuals, like with the shadow shots, the spiky hair, it's a lot of attention to detail. And just in the little things, too, like Wednesday, how it was misspelled.Like, there's a lot of hard work that goes into these things.
03:02So that's why if it might seem like we're repeating or especially me, I'm the ultimate king of repeating,it's because I really have a deep affection for how much I appreciate the hard work that goes into it.It takes a long time to make sure, make these shots really count and do it the right way. It's hard because you can make it look like shit so easily. And this looks fantastic.I love the stop motion.and I thought Normansuch a great character
03:27I love just his arc in generalI just love where we start withbut it's such a fascinating thingI mean I love how right awaywe just make it veryI mean from the titleI love the title of the film first of allbut just you know
03:39by the way I knewI had never heard of this filmwhen Greg texted us last nightsaid I thought he missed spelledparanormal and likebecause it was lateI was like he must have misspelledbut yeah I had never even heard of this movie
03:53so greatI had only heard it in passing, so I know it existed, but I didn't even know it existed. But yeah, great title. But then I love at the beginning of this film how, okay, this kid's a major pariah. For understandable reasons, like if someone says they talk to the dead and they walk around.Yeah, and again, I'm not a judgmental or mean human being, but in my own mind, I'm going to be like, okay. Not going to say anything mean, but I'm going to keep me there.Yeah, I mean, I'm not going to write freak on.
04:23his locker room but I'll definitely be like I don't know if I'd want to be alone yeah yeah forsure but again I love the journey we go on with this character and it was great and also tothe interactions we see with these other characters I love how too like it's also paying homagethere's so many other films that came before it yeah you got the Halloween you got Fridaythe 13th you got the goonies it literally turned into the goonies that the audio cues a couplelike I mean Halloween was the most obvious but there were moments I was like oh I thinkthat's a blank like it was really cool they got motifsYeah, and obviously a major homage to Tim Burton as well.
04:57Yeah.You can tell as well.I mean, I really, really appreciate and love this film.I also thought, too, what I loved about Norman, for a kid who was viewed as, and again, like, in his mind, like, he actually sees these dead people. This is really happening for him.And again, you can understand the town, even though I don't understand judging people in a mean, ostracizing ways they did.I understand why they think he's weird.Totally understandable.
05:22But I don't.understand why they would be such pieces of shit to him, especially it's being a little kid.The point I'm making is what I loved about Norman is through all the horrific interactionshe had been through with kids at school and adults, he still was a good person, a good littlekid at the end of the day. He still did what was right. And he still had his humanity. He stillhad compassion. And I appreciated that about his character. Like he easily could have beena little shit andI would have been like
05:53hey I get it like people are awfulyeah let them suffer let them dielet this ghostlylet this little girl who waswrongly you know taken from lifeby these other horrificlike this town just has the worst peopleapparently but let
06:10let this curse thingeradicate this place from earthI would have understood where he's coming fromyou know with how he's being treatedbut no he's stilldecided to do what was right. And I like that message. You know what I mean?I like the two wrongs don't make a right at the end.Absolutely. They also have the parallel between the two of them. I also enjoyed the choice to
06:30not make them necessarily related, but homage, the idea that with the eyebrows where it couldhave been a 400 year earlier ancestor. And I really liked the overall idea that like the weirdkid, not only the trope of finding other weird kids to be friends with, but letting theirspecialness be the thing that saves you. That's always like, you know, a nice message.to have your audit ebe that your strength but i think especially using this medium to do ahorror thing was really cool because claymation no matter what it is like kubo in the five stringsor corline which i have seen and i really enjoy but i had only seen it last year and it's the15th year anniversary so i was quite late on that one as well but uh there's always like a spookiness
07:08to me like the way clay look it's just it's it's tangible but almost animated so there's an uncannyvalley thing where like your brain's putting together all these different colors but you can actuallytactilely see how it's litwith natural lighting. I think the way it wasused here was stunning because it allowedfor things like those spikes and motionto feel so much more tangible and realand that allowed the spookiness to feel more
07:29like nightmarish or dreamlike. There was a lot ofdreamlike imagery which I think really workedlike the Terry cloth for the cloudsand the sunset was actual lighting andlike those things were really cool soI think it added to the story I definitely thinkat times the story is predictable but it's ayoung skewing movie so I was okay
07:45with that and it did a thing where it took aleft just often enough with its humor or with some of its choices that it was it stayed engaging andi think like as one of those studios like pixar where even if the story or some of the jokes aren't foryou the visual splendor will always keep you enamored visually like you could pause this movie andjust hold on a frame and be like oh my god yeah so like it is one of those studios i'm just alwaysimpressed by and uh i had a great sound with this one that's a good point because there were timesi'm like i'm loving that we're reacting to it but there's also times i'm like i want to pause and likejust admire yes
08:17exactly, which I'm going to go back and watch thisfor sure. This is also one of thoseanimated films. Like, for me, my favoritetypes of animated films are ones that are forchildren and for adults, and I feel likethis hit the nail for both.Sure. Dude, you're going to love Coraline.I'm excited. I really want to see it now. So bad.
08:32If we don't react here, that's a good Halloween. Like, we're spookyseason. Craig, no, you must wait nine moreyears. Nine year, ten year anniversary of the reactionto Coraline. But yeah, I had a reallygood time of this. There is some trivia. Yeah, let'swhere's, bye, but there it is.Did the ghost take it? It'sThe zombies took it.
08:47Norman has it.I knew it.Damn you, Norman. All right, Paranorman.Let's see what we got here.Oh, first of all, this is a game I like to play now with everyone.Out of 10 on IMDB rating, what would you guess the average rating is at a 10 for this?8.2.
09:057.0.Okay.So pretty good.I give it a 7.So that's actually, like I was thinking this is a 3.5 for me, which would be a 7.So that works.at a five is what I was going to rate it.So I line up with IMDB.
09:20The circle, there we go, finally stopped. And circles, all right, here we go.Animating the cheesy horror filmthat Norman is watching at the start of the filmwas reportedly very difficult for the filmmakersas they had to intentionally make a bad film, bad camera angles, poor focus, bad acting, et cetera, while still working in the very technically
09:40demanding confines of stop motion animation.I imagine spending months on something that was bad, like when your instinct is to make these beautifulshots that's funny yeah no they uh probably got uh what's his name um edwood never actuallyseen that i haven't actually either oh that'd be a good spooky season one by the way guess who'sfavorite movie of all time that is our boy john that's his favorite of all time number onefavorite movie ever we should have a three-person reaction and just have it like because i wantedto watch fight club with john see it would be fun to watch john's favorite movie with john having two
10:11of us i've only seen fight club one time it's a good one it's a good one uhUh-oh, there's an after-credit scene.Oh, is there? We didn't get it?Yeah, should we go back in?I don't know if it can we?Oh, there we go.Back always works.
10:27But it says after credit.Should I fast forward a little?Yeah, if we can.Oh, good, you got 10 seconds thing. This is thrilling for the people on Patreon.Thrilling.Well, this is on YouTube right now, actually. This movie?
10:42No, no, no, what we're doing right now. This is on YouTube.Oh.You guys get the full experience of chaos.Dude, I love Sanibuish right now.Yeah, the Greta's style. And all these incredible artists, all these talented people. We appreciate it.
10:55This would take a lot of people with what this movie had to do.Also, good use of Jack White in the credits.I wanted to give that some love.I like Jack White quite a bit and it fit the tone.I'll read the after.Oh, 2012, like, it said, in Coy's defense, it said 2022 on that. And I thought, okay, like, I would have remembered this.I would have heard about this.
11:15Oh, cool.Whoa.Oh my God.That's incredible.Norman to me?Yeah, I saw Norman body rid in the back of it.Oh.Oh, wow.
11:31That's surreal. And then they just smooth out of the eyes.Wow.That's insane.Very nice, Lika.Just knowing the work.Yeah, I thought it was 2000.I didn't think it was 2022.
11:46too i felt like we would have heard about yeah but also too when it said cody smit mcfee i was likehe sounds really yeah did he how did he get the childlike voice and it's amazon is wrong guys it says22 right here so i'm sure for those of you who didn't make it this far you're there's probablya lot of cons damn it coy it's 2012 i was lied to 12 years ago so this came out thank you this cameout right before corline because 2020 would have been 12 yearsyears ago and Coraline's 15, right after Coraline. So this is the movie after Coraline. If this is being honest, who knows?
12:21Who knows?2009. So, yeah, this is right up.So three years later, they did, like, the guy,kid version.Coraline's like a little girl.So there is an after credit scene showinga time lapse of thedesigning and construction in a workbench
12:36of the Norman character, which ends up withNorman coming to line as if waking up fromsleep and leaving the scene. Adorable.During the last few weeks leading upto the film's release, Lyca sent 49,packages to 49 people including Neil Gaiman and Kevin Smith and Jenny the bloggers lost in each package consisted of a wooden crate from Blythe Hollow full of grave dirt which recipients had to dig through to unearth a coffin inside the coffin was one of the seven cursed zombies complete with background information and name that's cleverI would love that the film company Laika used 3D printers to generate all of the different faces needed for the charactersexcept for the zombies, which had mechanical faces with silicone skins.
13:20Cool.Damn, the details, dude.A vending machine is shown to sell Kujos, a direct reference to the 1983 film Kujo.It even has a dog as a logo.Yep.The details, the details, the details.I actually never, have you seen that film?Kujo, no.
13:38Yeah, I know it's a Stephen King, right?Yeah, I like Stephen King, but I haven't known to know.Final film of Elaine Sturridge before her death on January 17th.2014.The story is set in the town ofBlythe Hollow, whose name is a mashupof two other stories.I was thinking Sleepy Hall. I knew it.
13:56Noel Cowards, Blight Spirit, andWashington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.Because whenever we were in the woods, I wasthinking, like, visual reminder. I'm like, this reminds me of Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow.Yeah. I was thinking that. I was actually aboutto make that reference. I was like, I can't tellif this is like Tim Burton's Batman, 1989,
14:13when Michael King after the museum.Well, yeah, when you were going to the woods.to the Bat Cave. You remember the wood shots?Tim Burton sees the woods.Yeah.I think it just directs everything.Exactly.
14:22Or if this is the Sleepy Hollow's Woods.I couldn't tell, but clearly it's Tim Burton's woods.Norman's ring tone is Halloween. That one is obvious. The film was shot using a Canon 5D Mark 2 DSLR camera. To generate the 3D effects, the camera was mounted on a special rig that would take one shot, then slide to a slightly different viewpoint to take another shot.shot and then they that's insane also a 5d shoot this is awesome that's crazy i think we use a 5d
14:52in some of our stuff yeah save for judge hopkins the seven curse zombies are not referred to by namebut they did have names the aforementioned judge hopkins even hardwick fattieus blacktonlemuel spalding amelia wilcott goody temper and while london so next time you watch this now you haveeyes peeled on those drape stones i got oh that's true it's a good point i think that's whenthey flashed by i was trying to read them that's a good point true yeah again it's happening so fasthard as though at the beginning of the film norman is watching a scary movie the actress ismodeled after jamie lee curtis in 1978's halloween while the plot is a spoof in1968's the night of the living dead i thought it was green queen by yeah that's true
15:36very good point uh i'll just do two more and we'll call it today um theBrand name seen on Mr. Prendergast's underwear is Mr. Fell after co-director Sam Fell.Mitch wears Mr. Butler underwear after co-director Chris Butler.I like that.Inserting your names in as Easter eggs. That's how you do it.All right.Last one.
15:58Jeff Garland based his performance of Perry Babcock.I like that name.Perry Babcock on his best friend, Jed Appetow.Leslie Mann's husband.Yeah.Who played his wife?Yes, that's true.So he based his performance on the husband of he was playing.
16:16He's like, if I'm going to play your husband, I'll play your husband.Exactly.It's a very meta, meta connected. You could have killed him. That was a delight.I really enjoyed it for all that you've done. And again, this is why I enjoy being on this channel.Like, I didn't even know this this movie existed.
16:33But this is what like, again, we've done so many, even you and I together, we've done so many reactions on movies I've never seen that I've loved. And this is why I love doing these things for the first time and getting, you know, to do it in front of you guys.So it's thanks to you.So thank you guys. Please leave a like because that allows this to keep happening.Leave a comment.Let us know if you knew it was 2022 or 2012.Also, let us know if you'd seen it before.
16:56Yeah, what a journey.Like out.So much love.Hit that subscription bell.If you haven't yet, so we'll be back for so much more, especially this spooky season. We'll see you soon, Reject Nation.Much love.Like.
17:08Wow.If there's someone's a diary I would love to read.It would be Mikhail Linden's.Yeah.It would just be like James Bond.James Bond.Oh, James Bond.Oh, I'm Swedish.
17:21Mr. James Bond Lyndon. Why can't James Bond just be in Sweden?Oh my gosh.Diary of a wimpy, Swede.I can't imagine what's in there. You know what?I can because it's an improv shout out.I would know that what's in there is your plans, your diabolical plans,
17:39to assassinate the next person who's playing Bond. That's right.Because it's just going to be casting that will upset you because you're a fanatic. You're one of them hardcore fans who just hates whenever there's a casting announcement. Those are McHale's rules. He has prepped himself ready to annihilate the next person who's going to play James Bond. And that's why we need to get our hands on our hands on a diary. But here's a problem, John.
18:00John, got to tell me my promise. The promise, I think it's really invasive to look through someone's diary.Like if I was a cop, SWAT member, you name it.Bad Boy Detective.divorcee from this previous shadow on this other guy Gary Busey take it away JohnMichael we're gonna go eat a meatball sub that's me right there hang out Gary Busey and I'mthere I'm raiding and I'm like wow there's like a thousand bottles of Loub hereI don't know what I'm gonna do break off but I would never go through the diary I would
18:27never go through the diary so your business because of my moral standards I would not beable to catch you watch the tapes next thing you knowUm, next thing you know, you're freaking off withChris Pratt. Cannot. Can't play Bond now becauseMcHale took him out. Like the freakies. We finally got there. How couldyou? How could you? Because you can't. Because I believein your tenacity to succeed. Shout out to you.
