Greg Alba & Tara Erickson dive into the Disney+ adaptation of Rick Riordan’s bestselling series Percy Jackson and the Olympians as we follow Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell), Annabeth Chase (Leah Jeffries), and Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri) through the opening episodes: “I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher” and “I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom.” We revisit every major moment — Percy’s discovery that he’s a demigod, the attack from Mrs. Dodds / the Fury (Alecto), the Minotaur battle, Sally Jackson’s disappearance, Grover revealing his true identity as a satyr, Percy’s arrival at Camp Half-Blood, his first encounter with Chiron, Mr. D, the centaurs, the cabins, the Capture-the-Flag scene, and the emerging threat from the gods of Olympus. We also highlight the iconic creatures and monsters featured in Episodes 1 & 2: Fury (Alecto), Minotaur, Hellhound tease, and hints of Olympus rising. We break down changes from the books, character dynamics, early foreshadowing for the Lightning Thief arc, how this adaptation sets up Percy Jackson Season 2, and why Disney+ is treating this series as a major tentpole. Whether you’re searching for Percy Jackson Disney Plus reaction, Percy Jackson episodes explained, Minotaur fight breakdown, or Percy Jackson Season 2 predictions, this video covers mythology, monsters, friendships, powers, and every big moment from the first two episodes. Tara, you ready to rock and roll?
I'm ready to rock and roll. Let's break you go.
What is this about?
Well, ladies
and gentlemen, we just watched
the first two episodes of Percy Jackson
and the Olympians.
Tara and I have watched on this
channel the first movie
It's called Lightning Thief.
The second one, Sea of Monsters.
I remember really hating that movie.
That was my experience with that.
And now we're here quite some time later.
Some familiarity coming back into the Noggin.
Got some thoughts.
A little bit of prose, a little bit of cons.
But Tara, I want to hear your thoughts first.
What's your overall feeling on this matter?
Your honest feeling as you're starting this job.
journey. I actually really like it. I like the casting. I believe our
lead kid. I think I believe all of the acting, which is great.
And I actually really like the writing. I mean, you know, in the reaction, I call it out a
couple of times. And I think that the way that they're doing
exposition is obviously, you know, he's asking a lot of questions, but it
doesn't feel like, oh God, I had to fit this in. I think they did it
the right way. And I actually think that the pacing of this show,
It's done really well.
Like it doesn't feel like, oh, God, it's dragging.
Like, we get that they're going to have to do this thing.
They're adding a little, you know, surprise moments and when conversations need to happen,
it doesn't feel like they're dragging it out, which I very much appreciate.
So I'm actually having a lot of fun with it.
All right.
All right.
Cool.
Cool.
I feel like I can see this being an improvement upon the movie.
I'm kind of surprised by how much it feels like the movie.
movie. I don't know why. It's like a better
pace version of it. It's a more believable
version of it. I remember
a lot of the events and stuff and even like the look
is it feels looks like the film but more polished
and perhaps the movie was a bit more accurate
because I was going into this as oh this will be the
incredibly you know more accurate depiction
of the novel you know. And I'm recalling
some differences already off the bat.
So it's taking my brain a little bit of time
to fully detach from
the pre-existing knowledge of the film
and take it on its own merits.
But for our first couple chapters,
I think it's a pretty good start.
The cast is pretty good.
I like seeing the camp world.
It has a nice blend of feeling
like an actual camp that kids go to school with.
That's something that I like about the vibe of the show.
With the movie, I associate them as young adult actors playing teens, and I really feel like I'm watching kids.
Yeah.
Which is important for characters who are supposed to be children or at least look like children, you know.
And that side of it is really enjoyable to me.
The effects are very good.
The overall way it's shot is really good, too.
There's parts of the pacing that I feel like could improve, though.
I'm not quite sure what that's slowly.
that I would like to be implemented would be,
but there are times where I do feel like it should pick up some rhythm.
It should pick up some pacing because there's a lot of like slowing down to explain stuff.
And then we'll get some like random visuals and action scenes,
but it all seems to be breathing from the same pace.
And it doesn't ever really feel like it's kind of escalating above the one line.
And that's the element that I feel like it could use a little bit,
of strengthening on
for the first couple episodes though
I think it's a really good
first couple episodes though
you know like it's strong
yeah it's out right now
but you're right like anytime he talked
to Kyron and like
you know Jason
whatever he played
like was off of his dad
who pretended to be his dad
that to me felt like
ah this could have gone a lot faster
and also weird that we didn't actually get to see
the fun stuff that Grover
walked into. He just came back
to be like, I got news. Your mom's alive.
Remember the whole setup?
We're like, I wanted to see what was going
on over there. That was cool.
Yeah, well, this is setting up the
adventure. The real adventure is the quest that
he's going to go on. Yeah. And in that quest,
we're going to get a bunch of different characters.
We're going to probably get the return of that
Mrs. Dodds played by. What is
that actor's name from Will & Grace?
Oh, yeah. Karen.
Megan. No, no, no. Megan Malali.
Yeah. It took me. It did take me
a little bit of time to
yeah she's great
who she is yeah you know
and I'm waiting to see how the chemistry
unfolds with people too
like I like the inverse of bullying
as well you know you kind of expect
this Luke guy to be the bully
ends up not being the bully
kind of star athlete who takes a liking
and there's a kinship that forms
the
motivation that Percy
takes on from the death
of his mother as well as that's like
permitting through his soul. There's a natural
sadness to this kid that I enjoy
watching. Yeah. There is.
You could see it in his eyes.
Yeah. Yeah. That he's caring a lot,
especially in him being
unclaimed and that was the one thing he
really wanted to know from Luke. Are you also
unclaimed and like, no, you know?
And now he, it might be
a little lonely if he has to live in
the house, Poseidon house
all alone.
Like,
and right now I'm kind of waiting for more of these characters
to sort of leap off the screen.
Yeah, I get that.
Like everyone's doing a really good job.
Every actor's doing a good job.
But I am sort of waiting for some type of oom for a special excitement about a certain character
in the way they're being portrayed or the way the performance is going down.
Because right now everyone is like doing a serviceable job.
Yeah, it's like neutrally good.
Yeah, but no one's really like standing out as a true like strong performer yet.
to me or something with the personality.
Yeah.
Like when you compare it, if you do compare it to the movie, which I'm sure people
probably hate me doing.
Like the headmaster of the centaur was like Pierce Brosnan.
Totally.
So that provides like a real freaking presence.
Yeah.
And Grover, I like.
So funny.
I like Grover as the, he's more of a comedic relief in the movie.
And he is louder, I would say, or something.
And a strong personality, like what you're saying.
Like Grover, we remember that, hey, he was very funny.
Yeah, yeah.
And I'm kind of waiting for that to be, to really sing for anyone here.
Because I'm liking the acting.
Again, it feels more believable.
It's less goofy, which I really like.
You know, if I'm going to be attached to a show,
I want to see if they can make this larger-than-life world feel grounded enough
where I can buy into its own version of reality.
And so everyone's doing a really good job.
And overall, the caption is doing really good.
But, yeah, there are some stuff.
Like Jason Manzoukis, Mr. D stands out as a certain type of personality.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm waiting for more of that to shine through.
So when you get the dynamic of the three, when they're going on their adventure,
I feel like that chemistry is going to be very integral to how the rest of this show ends up feeling overall.
Yeah, because if it's not, if it's not popping or doesn't feel super important and grounded and, like, also exciting at the same time,
then if we have to follow them.
for a while it's not going to be as much fun
exactly exactly
and I also like some more
the you know
supernatural horror blemishes
that this show has
yeah
that's a spooky guy
have some real spooky things going on here
yeah they do and I appreciate
the way it's reserving showing
us a lot of the gods right now that we
know we will get like in the movie
they start off with the gods
and I appreciate them dialing
it back and
thrusting you so like primarily into percy jackson's perspective yeah the way how he's taking in
the information the way he's learning about it he doesn't learn about it with like cuttoes of gods or
flashbacks of gods he's learning about it just through dialogue the way we
the way we would yeah yeah there's a they're doing a really good job with thrusting you into his
pov sometimes they break away from his pov to look at other characters but more often than not it's
solely his POV. So overall,
enjoying the show. I'm excited to see
what more we have in store.
In the meantime, Tara, we got some
Royal Reject questions. Ready to do it? Let's go.
Want to read the first one? Yeah, sure. Andrew
Nickerson. Hey, Terran, Greg.
I had a hard time getting used to
Walker Scobalus, Percy Jackson.
How do you like the casting choices? Do you think they're right for their
respective roles?
Huh. I didn't really have a hard time getting used to him.
Well, you did say, is he playing, like, neurodivergent?
And then I was like, wait, I have to pay attention.
And then I was like, no, but maybe?
I don't know.
It's the way how he responds to certain things.
Like, even when he saw his mom die, there was a...
There wasn't much there.
It wasn't like an emptiness.
No.
It was a difficult...
It's a difficult to express emotion thing.
Yeah.
Yeah, and I'm wondering, is he just a bad actor in that regard?
Oh, really?
I don't feel like he is.
I don't think he is.
Like, I don't think he is.
I can't really saying.
And, like, yeah, he's not as emotionally, I guess, fluid in that way.
He seems like a character.
And he could just be a traumatized kid who has a hard time expressing his emotions.
Yeah.
But that's a big part of his portrayal that I'm finding really interesting is, you know, like Percy Jackson in the movie seems like he's got all this.
shit and he's the coolest guy in the world and he gets everything done and he's just like the special
of the special of the specials and i like how he has a real struggle i i appreciate his performance
there's there's something there that feels like a a human yeah i know what it's like to be a young
boy who has a hard time expressing his emotions and comes across a little socially awkward
and detached yeah so i feel like i'm see that's what i'm seeing and it seems very intentional
in the performance so no i think he's doing a good job oh i agree
I definitely don't have a hard time getting used to, not for me.
I feel like he has to grow a little bit more into the role as the story progresses.
Yeah.
Then we'll really see if he's up to the challenge of the more bigger, the more big emotional scenes or whatever, you know?
Yeah.
This episode's brought to you by Prize Picks, the app that made me finally understand my wife's obsession with fantasy sports.
She's been obsessed with fantasy sports the entire time I've known her.
And I'll be honest, I would sometimes zone out whenever she would talk stats.
She'd kill me for a minute of that recorded.
But until now, now I get it.
Because price picks makes it simple and fun.
And no, it's not gambling.
It's daily fantasy sports.
You're not betting against other people or the house.
It's just you versus your predictions.
You pick more or less on two-player stats.
Like, will Steph Curry hit more than five threes tonight?
Or will Patrick Mahomes throw less than three T-Ds that's touchdown?
for you un-initiated.
And if you're right, you get paid.
And I'm a man all about efficiency and speed,
so what hooked me is how fast it is.
You can make a lineup in under a minute
in over 40 states,
and it gives every game that extra level of excitement.
When you're right,
that feeling can be addicting in the best kind of way.
So, Reject Nation, if you're ready to join the Alba household,
you can download the Price Picks app today
and use code Rejects to get $50 in lineups
after you play your first $5 lineup.
That's code Rejects to get $50 in lineup
after you play your first $5.00 light-up prize fix.
It's good to be right.
Mani, so glad you guys are covering this.
A big reason the author Rick Ryderden created this series
was to help his son who has ADHD and dyslexia
have a character that looks like him in the books.
What do you think of this series
as it relates to the current trend in Hollywood
to shy away from diversity?
I became a different question.
to shy away from diversity and inclusivity.
Wait, what do you think of the series as it relates to the current trend in Hollywood to shy?
Okay, Manny, what I will say is that I don't think Hollywood has shied away from it.
To me, they've swung into it at least the last like eight years.
Like, this is going to seem weird coming from me.
I am a white girl with brunette hair.
I don't book a lot, but the people that I do see who book are,
diverse and it seems they're inclusive like LGBTQ or their Asian or different you know ethnicity
seem to be booking more so I actually don't think that but maybe I could be wrong I don't I think
we're going in the other direction yeah I'm not really sure on this question well Hollywood is at a
weird crossroads because they were swinging really hard towards that direction yes it but in the
past year and a half, there's been a lot more studios being like, if it's woke, no, let's
not. Let's go back. Let's go back. Yeah. And they don't really understand balance or just do
what's best for the story. And more often than not, the leading character, still a white guy and
surrounded by a bunch of different ethnicities, just like this show. Yeah, yeah, totally. You're
actually right about that. It's usually what it is. I don't mind diversity and inclusivity. I don't
really i make i make jokes about it but it's not something that distracts me i grew up in
california like i was in the same class of 30 kids in first eighth grade and we were
a whole bunch of different ethnicities yeah all of us are you know so i'm not really i don't
really notice it in a way that's like what the hell's going on in this movie i thought your
question was going to lean more into this idea of are they using actors who actually have
ADHD and dyslexia right but at that point i don't really
No, I like the diversity that this show is having.
You got all kinds of ethnicities on screen here.
So everyone's being represented,
and I don't really give a shit if people have a problem with that.
It's not, it doesn't, the animath character is not going up here being like,
you don't know the struggles of a black girl.
Yeah.
She's just show it up, and she happens to be a black girl.
She's there.
Yeah.
Yeah, we just got to add in some gay people.
Yeah, it's getting more gays in here, man.
Come on now.
Just just get, swing them in.
You know the gods love to have them gay times.
Yeah.
Come on, man.
Especially back then, the Greek guy.
Oh, yeah, dude.
They were gaying it up all the time.
Oh, yeah, they were juicing it, for sure.
For sure, for sure.
How do you feel about the trope of characters who will,
of the, you know, having disability?
Yeah, the word disability sounds like an offensive word now, doesn't it?
As someone with ADHD.
Like candy capable.
Is that the new friendly word?
I feel like, yeah, they're handy capable.
Yeah, so to have that, like taking the word of disability and make it ability.
Right.
How do you like that interpretation?
Movies and shows will often do that.
You mean, like, in here of him have, with the ADHD and the dyslexia?
That's like a lot of these characters, apparently, in this world, they're supposed to be reflective of that.
And Percy's embodiment of that.
I actually really like that, because if we're talking about,
from back in the day, nobody really knew.
ADD, ADHD, dyslexia.
It was like you, it was like embarrassing for people.
And I forget with the third thing that Luke said,
but I was like, oh yeah, that feels like it's everybody now
on a certain spectrum has some parts of this
that now people aren't like, I guess, embarrassed to say
that they have it.
And I like that if there are kids,
which I assume there's tons, watching this show,
and if they look at it and they go, oh, my God,
when I open a book, the words look like that to them,
then that's a good representation, I think, on camera
and in a fun show for them to be represented as a demigod
where, like, they're making them, like, badass, which I like.
Yeah.
Fair enough. Fair enough.
Let's hop around a little bit here.
Let's go to Tori Jerry.
Read it, Tara.
The first Percy Jackson movie cut Clarice's character out completely
and used Annabeth in her place for scenes like Capture the Flag.
How do you feel about her?
Addition.
Corrice is the bully.
Okay.
Okay.
I'd like you for the sole purpose that it is a female bully.
Yeah.
I don't really feel like we see that too often, especially even on the physical front as well.
Oh, not at all.
But is Annabeth the bully or is Annabeth the disappearing girl?
Annabeth is the disappearing girl.
That's okay.
Okay.
So in the movie that was played by Alexandra Dadario.
Okay.
And I remember in the scene in the movie at the lake, she's the one who's, like, fighting with Percy.
So they kind of combined both of them.
Oh, yeah.
Okay.
But Clarice isn't in the movie.
And again, that's a character, though, that when watching this, there's a lot of the intention I appreciate of, again, having a female bully.
It's kind of cool to witness.
For sure.
And they're hinting at more backstory for her, like when the Spears broke.
and she screams no yeah there's something tragic I'm sure she's a bully for for reasons so many reasons yeah that we'll probably unpack it will humanize her hurt people but right now it is feeling a little two-dimensional on the way the portrayal is just feels like typical bully with typical motivation and typical lines yeah where it's like basically not motivation or she's like I don't actually want to kill him but she wants to like you know bug him yeah
Yes, yes. I said earlier that sometimes I watch shows and I could see the sides and what sides are is what actors are giving and auditions.
Yeah.
To read.
Here's the lines that you have.
And sometimes I see like the audition scene.
Yeah, totally.
And there are times with her where I feel like that's what I'm saying.
Yeah.
Yeah, totally.
I feel like you can see a little bit with Annabeth too with, you know, her appearance here in this second where she.
finally shows up in the second episode.
I do like her addition to it.
I like that she's looking for the demigod to basically, you know,
she's kept an eye out and she's failed plenty of times in finding that person.
Obviously, it's Percy for us.
But again, for Tori and other people have, like, read the books or watched the movies
as gazillion times and remember everything.
I'm probably not the best one to come to you to be like,
how do you really feel about it?
Because I'm like, well, I don't,
I wouldn't be the person who would feel really strongly about it anyway.
So, but I liked her.
I thought she was good and very, really grounded, very believable.
That is one thing that I do like about all the actors,
whether it feels like it's dragging or too expositioning
or too tropey of like, of course,
that's how a bully would respond or blah, blah, blah.
Thank God they're all, it's all still very believable.
Definitely.
I would 100% echo your statements there.
Bree Garcia.
I really love how they,
how much they tried to make up for the movie adaptations with the series.
Rick Ryarden worked on it firsthand to help it be truer to the source material.
Oh.
Is there a book adaptation you'd like to see read done as a series to maintain the integrity of the plot better?
I don't read.
I don't really know any books that require more.
I'm reading, I'm almost, I'm like a third of the way through Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
Ooh.
It's not as exhilarating as I hoped.
I've never watched Frankenstein.
But there is one book that I don't think they've made a movie or even a series of the name of the wind.
Great.
It's the first book.
The second is, I forget the title right now.
I'm reading it.
The name of the wind.
The next one is something.
thing. I'm reading it. It's a thicky. Okay. It's a thicky. I forget the title. Great books,
though. That'd be cool to see it to be done. Yeah, I should have preview this question beforehand.
I don't really have an answer for you, honestly. I'm hoping the Harry Potter show is able to do more of
those accuracies. Even though I haven't read the books. It would be cool to, you know, watch and go,
I wonder if this is more accurate. So that's that. Sorry, what you're good at? I wish we could have
more substance there, but not today. Oh, my God.
You read Chelsea Collins. Chelsea Collins.
How are you doing?
I'm from Texas.
I enjoy your videos when I'm working or just bored.
Y'all make me laugh.
Love that.
Who's your favorite Greek mythology,
mythological character?
I would say mine is all of them,
but I relate the most to Medusa.
She is vastly misunderstood.
Oh, we're on a roll here with questions
that I can't really answer.
I don't, you know,
who is the woman who's cool?
Venus?
She's like the sexy one.
okay i think maybe i'll just go with her because i just like yeah her what greek god is most likely
to constantly seek validation
relies on humor to be liked
we're going to have the same greek god aspiring artists
never feels good enough exactly it'll and anything they do will never be
it up let's find out yeah okay let's see see what tarot i are oh it's so good that is like
answer the question for us a i why is it not answering why is you take it oh because you're oh no it's
yeah let's ask google google's be faster yeah well what the heck is going on there come on google
okay he it looks like hepatitis hepatitis and dynasis that's mr day no the perform her

Well,

Okay?
Yes.
A little bit of the help.
Congratulations.
You have succeeded.

You've done it.
Yep.

Why do you think Tara and I would be the ones to know?
Do we look like John or Coy?
Come on now.
Yeah, I don't know.
Like, I'll go and look up some Greek myths, maybe, before the next episodes, and then I'll
be able to answer.
You got to meet us halfway here.
Yeah, like, give us ABCD multiple choice.
You'd give multiple choices would help us out.
We don't even know the names, Venus.
I don't even know.
Is that the correct way to spell her?
or did you spell hercules or is that even hercules or is there a heracolese that we don't know
about there might be a heracolese haracolese nope yeah there is oh my god there is a heracolice is known as
