Directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago, Into the Woods), this high-seas epic sees Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands, Fantastic Beasts) return as the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow, who finds himself entangled in a dangerous quest to find the mythical Fountain of Youth. Along the way, he reunites with the mysterious and cunning Angelica, played by Penélope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Vanilla Sky), who may or may not be the daughter of the infamous pirate Blackbeard, portrayed by Ian McShane (Deadwood, John Wick). Geoffrey Rush (Shine, The King's Speech) also returns as the scheming Captain Hector Barbossa, now a privateer in service to the British crown. Thank you to Hewlett for sponsoring this video. More on them in just a bit.
OK, how about you give them your first thoughts while I look up the patron questions?
Oh, boy, I thought it was fun.
I thought it was definitely a.
It was a similar feel obviously,
it's the Pirates world,
but I felt like the fun of Jack Sparrow
still being there was obviously still present.
I'm not gonna lie,
I can't say I didn't miss having Elizabeth and Jack
there on the journey with us.
I feel like their relationship added a lot of heart.
I miss some of our other crew, but for the people that were still there,
I thought they did a great job.
They still felt tonally consistent with who they were in the previous
few movies and yeah, I think it was fun.
I think I liked it.
I don't think I can say I was over the moon about it.
I was never bored. I do think it was
you know still Exposition having more focus on you know the plot than it was the characters.
I mean obviously there was like a relationship between Jack and um you know Penelope Cruz's
character and you know that dynamic was fun. Um but yeah overall I think I liked it. You know, it was it was a swashbuckling adventure. They did a good job of having it
Be the first movie in the franchise since the first one to be like this kind of standalone experience that you know
You don't need to watch the other three
Really to you know know what's happening here. Yeah, and you don't need to
It doesn't have like a heavy tease towards a sequel except for the ending with her being the doll or having the doll. But um, yeah
Yeah, I did I did like it I did miss Will and swan obviously I for some reason
I thought that they were gonna pop up like I I didn't know that they were not part of this movie
So I was like, but
then obviously we're 20, 30 minutes in. I'm like, Oh, I don't, I wasn't really thinking
about it then after that. I was like, Oh, I guess they're not in this movie anymore.
Um, which yeah, I guess it makes sense. I really liked that they added in, um, the fun
with black beard and the fact that we were like, he's got straight up powers.
He's like a witch, except really it was Queen Queen Anne's revenge. That ship is baller.
And now Barbosa, who worked for the freaking Brits, right.
He's like, I love the detail that they gave for Barbosa.
Right. Because the last time we saw him
in, like at the end of one or two, he takes a bite into the green apple, right?
Green apples are always all over.
But in this one, because he's been with the British, they were cut up into slices.
Did you notice that on a silver platter and he eats some of the fork, which I was like,
this is ridiculous.
And I thought that was great character detail, especially for him specifically.
And I do agree that it is a bit odd
because he really was going after the Fountain of Youth,
but he just, vengeance will really sidetrack you though.
Because if you feel in your gut, you're like,
I would rather seek revenge than live forever.
Like I'd rather kill that person.
So we did think that was still a little weird that he wasn't going after the fountain of
youth as savagely. So they made it like a one of the other thing. I feel like he could
have had both if he wanted to. Yeah, he totally could have had both because he showed up.
But it I feel like he was just a one track mind where he was just like, I'm killing Blackbeard for taking his leg,
and which I get, which I thought was fun.
I liked the relationship between Jack Sparrow and Angelica
because in the beginning, she is sort of a con woman,
but then also she was a convert,
like she was gonna become a nun, but then also she was a convert. Like she was going to become a nun.
And then what?
He soiled her?
Like, that was what was a little bit said in the beginning.
She was like, I was almost going to take my vows.
And I was like, oh dang, she was going to be,
I think in the church.
All right.
And he, what was the word?
Oh yeah, he said he had stirrings, which I know that they're saying that he had
emotions or feelings. But I'm like, I think he juiced it with
her. Obviously, which I thought was, I don't know, it was just a
fun sort of thing, especially when they kiss and he's like,
oh, you're the only other one that would have known that sword
move. So I like that she had a lot of just like different areas of character development,
meaning she was, I think, going to become a nun, part of the church, also knows how
to fight and then is Blackbeard's daughter, which I was like, oh snap.
All right. That's a lot.
But it was it was fun, especially if we get to see her in the next one with that voodoo doll,
she gets to control Jack, which I think is their chemistry is insane.
Even you sat back when they were on the boat, when he was a little bit seducing her, you
were like, and I was like, yeah, their chemistry flies off the screen, which is is great for this movie because it's not like they're together a lot. A lot of
this movie is still the the wonder and enjoyment of pirates and fighting and a
lot of great choreography with the sword fights, um, which was a lot of fun. But I
really like this one specifically a lot more because they timed it up with the
music and the pirates music from the top if you realize that first
fight scene with the swords
it's like but um, but it took but it would dump and it's like and then we we do a pickup of Jack and he falls
back right to the timing of the music and
That's when he I think broke through Blackbeard's door or something
I love that and they did that multiple times throughout this entire film.
And I really feel drawn to that,
and it keeps me really engaged,
especially when it's like with the music.
I love that. I thought it was a lot of fun.
Yeah, I thought this one was fun.
It takes a little notice this time,
you know, so we can remember some stuff. I do wish the Spanish were used a little notes this time. So we can remember some stuff.
I do wish the Spanish were used a little bit more
because the top of the movie made it seem like
they're gonna be a bigger part of the movie.
But yeah, they just kind of came in at the end
to fuck shit up and then they like, all right, deuces.
Totally.
And then this all was like, all right, cool.
I like their fit, I like their vibe.
So I would have liked the utilize this a little bit more.
Yeah.
Yeah, I think Barbosa's motivation was cool,
understandable.
He's a man who's after his issues, a very motivated man.
So the fact that he had cut off his leg
as a sign like, I'm in charge of my own fate.
I really like that.
I mean, yeah, I would have liked to, you know, him to actually be another contender amongst
this people, these people trying to get the fountain of youth.
Yeah, and I liked that, you know, we get the tease, the black pearl, the black pearl is,
you know, seemingly going to be in the next movie.
That way they don't have to argue over who gets which ship anymore.
You know, Barbosa can have his ship, Jack can have his ship.
We can, you know, be pirates on our individual journeys unless,
you know, something in the next film causes us to cross paths.
I like the fact that over the course of these movies, they were never
actually like friends.
They were just two dudes who had their own motivations.
And sometimes their motivations happen to be in line.
But as soon as they're not in line anymore, you know, they're back at odds. So I dug that.
I mean, they were kind of in friendly terms in this one.
But I imagine, you know, by the time something else comes around, if something, you know, they both want, it will not be the most pleasant of terms. So who knows? We'll see.
And yeah, some time has obviously some time has passed off screen.
I'm wondering how much time has passed between the third film and the fourth film.
I thought, yeah, because he's he wholly lost his leg.
He's lost his ship. He's now with the British.
OK, cool. You know, and yeah, yeah, so it didn't play a major role.
I think they made it standalone enough
where it feels like you could watch the other Pirates movies,
but it's loose enough for,
you don't need to watch them immediately
to kind of get into the vibe.
You know Jack Sparrow, you know what he's about,
and just have fun with this one.
And we kind of already knew at the end that Barbosa was kind of getting with the Brits
at the end of the last one.
Yeah, I'm trying to remember.
Like because I know there was just like so much going on, but I think like that would
be the only thing that would tie us over here, but that doesn't even matter because it has
no con.
It doesn't have any strings pulling us to this movie specifically.
It's a really nice reveal when we get to King George
and then Barbosa walks in and you're like,
oh yeah, okay, you're a real classy Brit now.
Yeah, I thought that stuff was great.
I do wish this one had a little bit more heart though.
Like the stuff with the mermaid and the dude,
the Christian dude, they had good chemistry. Like the stuff with the mermaid and the dude, the Christian dude,
look they had good chemistry. Like I like watching them on screen but I feel like some of the heart
that the other films had with you know Elizabeth really wanting to save Will and then wanting to
you know take care for Dad or save for Dad and then Will also wanting to save his own Dad. That
personal pull of what made those movies what they were,
at least in part.
I think that was the emotional draw for those films.
I feel like there was a little bit lacking in this one.
I feel like maybe the mermaid stuff
with the guy was supposed to take place of that,
but I don't think it was developed enough
for it to really have stood out in the same way
where that aspect of things were as prominent and impactful in the other films.
Yeah, I agree with that.
I think I was really looking forward to seeing what the hell happened to him and the mermaid.
Yeah.
I was like, did he turn into a mermaid?
We got the clue that yes, a mermaid kisses you, saves you from drowning.
She takes him under.
I'm like, hey, he's not gonna drown.
But does he turn into a mermaid
or are you gonna become Ariel on land now?
Like, I need to know the end of that story.
She's gonna eat him.
No.
I don't know.
I don't think she's gonna eat him.
That's the rumor.
No, that's her love.
They're different.
Remember, she was like, you're different.
I did, but yeah, I was in big and then he was like you're different
It was a whole thing a lot of this movie though threw in a lot of faith based
Aspects like it was Penelope Cruz had a big old cross on her, right?
I mean again, I talked about her being in the in the convent and then we've got the Bible thumper guy talks about faith
Blackbeard talked about
I keep wanting to say Penelope about Angelica
Swaying him with her face. I was like dang
There's a lot of God talk in this one more so than I think there was in the other ones which totally fine
Don't don't mind. I mean it was obviously the background of the story
with Angelica and her saving the guy
that I guess she met through church,
the Bible thumper guy.
Anyway, I thought that was an interesting,
I guess, poll because the juxtaposition between pirates
and someone who's like, we go to church
and we read the Bible,
there's a lot of differences there.
So it's kind of fun to see that push and pull there.
Although I don't think it was highlighted
maybe as much as it could have been
in regards to how like bad that could get, right?
Between someone who's like very godly and like pirates.
That I didn't see as much, um, I don't know the word for it that I'm trying to think.
I want to say like vitriol, but I also want to say like, uh, that you would, you'd be
like, no, stay away from me.
Cause you, you're a godly person or she would be like, no, yeah, like friction, like, no, you get away from me. You you're a godly person or she would be like no yeah like friction like no you get away from me you
Pirates kind of a thing but her dad's a pirate so
Anyhow, I thought that was interesting interesting little turn they made should we get into the patron questions? Let's do it. All right

Thanks to heal for sponsoring this video
Ali says this is the first Pirates of the Caribbean film to stand apart from the original
trilogy's overarching storyline with Elizabeth Davy Jones, et cetera.
How well do you think on Stranger Tide succeeded in establishing itself as a new chapter?
It's always interesting to see how producers, writers create new properties from established
ones.
Sometimes it works out, i.e. Jurassic World,
and sometimes it fails spectacularly.
ICU, direct to VHS, DVD, animated Disney sequels.
Yeah, I get what you're saying.
I think this one, I mean, for me, it kinda, it worked out.
I definitely didn't hate it.
And we know that, you know,
the third one was not really my film film and it could have also been a mixture of like an off day.
I don't know. But I did enjoy this one.
So I don't think it was like a spectacular failure.
Yeah, I think this one was was cool.
I appreciate them for be willing to take a new direction,
be willing to not have to rely on, you know,
the established characters that they had
in the previous films.
Yeah, I'm a little mixed,
because part of me is like, yeah,
I like the fact that they were able to do that
and have the courage to explore a new direction with some of the same characters
without having to rely on the heart. But I wish that maybe would have tackled it from
a different angle to allow us to feel more emotionally invested. Because I feel like
with a character like Jack Sparrow, you can get behind him because he's funny, he's whimsical,
he's very charming, right? But I think what the other two characters brought was that grounded nature,
that's something that we can all connect to.
And with him as the lead with that kind of being taken out
and making it solely the pirate stuff,
it's entertaining, but it's, I don't know,
it's like missing an ingredient for me personally.
But I think that that said,
I don't think it's a bad idea to just take it in a new direction.
I think the fact that this movie largely stands on its own because the grant of this one and the first one very much stand on its own.
If you only saw Pirates one, you would not need to see Pirates two.
But Pirates two and three are kind of relying upon each other because they are the they came out a year apart.
So I imagine they with two, it was obviously intended for it to be a trilogy but um
yeah I I thought this one was cool it wasn't my favorite I kind of like
middle of the road on it but I think that with there being another installment
I feel like there is chance for it to be exciting.
And not to say this wasn't exciting, but I think there is a chance for it to reestablish
itself from an emotional standpoint as well as an interesting plot standpoint.
Yeah, I think, you know, ideally in any movie, we definitely want more heart in it.
Like we want to have an emotional pull. And
this one didn't really give us that. I did get that with the siren and you know, Bible
thumper guy thinking like, please show us that. Are they going to fall in love or something?
I got it a little bit between Angelica and Jack Sparrow, but that was more like sultry
sort of sexy good good chemistry vibes.
Versus yeah, and the other ones, Will and Swan
did give us a lot of heart in that.
For some reason, maybe the reason it didn't bother me
as much is because I like Penelope Cruz.
She's a good actress.
And I did believe her when she gives Jack Sparrow
that speech about that is actually her father
and she actually wants him to live.
And then we see her at the end,
just she doesn't even get mad at him for grabbing
the chalice with the tear in it and just gulping it down.
And she's like, I love you father,
or whatever she says where it's like,
she's such a dedicated, like loving daughter
that I thought was odd,
cause I didn't really trust,
I still didn't trust Blackbeard,
cause I, with the gun thing,
I was like, yeah, he'll shoot her real quick.
Not that that was full of a lot of heart,
but I liked the way that she delivered it.
And I believed her.
I believe Penelope Cruz when she talks, which is a plus.
And so I believed that she wasn't mad when her dad just grabbed the chalice away from
her and drank it, knowing full well that she would die.
And she didn't seem upset at all.
She was just like, love you.
That was her purpose. And so that was kind of the little bit of heart, a little bit that we got. But
I ideally would want more. I'd really want to feel for these characters. And I, yeah,
I wasn't like pulled really deeply into it.
Yeah, I think that's why I really dig the second one is because Will goes off specifically to get
Swan out of jail and then when she goes off to try to go to try to save him and you know and then
he's going to go save his dad as well so I feel like that stuff all made it more compelling in
addition to having Jack Sparrow and he has he's like the the roguish scoundrel who seems like he
doesn't know what he's doing but really does find a way to pull through at the
end I think that like he's like the proper term it's like they find this
fine line between him being clever and efficient but posing as incompetent
which I like that they're able to to walk that line with him always being smarter than he always appears to be.
But yeah, I dug their chemistry
and not knowing if you could trust her
and then not knowing if you could actually trust Blackbeard.
Even, and I also wanna say his performance
was really great in him in this film.
I thought that he did a great job of living up to the legend
of what the characters talking about him
were before they actually showed him.
I was like, okay, yeah, I believe this is the guy
that everybody's been talking about.
And he does have that thing about him
that makes him scary, that makes him threatening,
and has that central force
of a personality to be believable as a leader of this ship.
So I think he did a great job.
And I'm sad he's only gonna be in this movie.
Cause I would love to see him more.
I know, he's so good.
I love him.
He's Mr. John Wick guy.
He is.
All right.
Next and last question is from J. Rushton.
What is your favorite pirate trap?
Mine is you must play correct notes on piano there.
Hmm. Was that a.
Pirate trap. You must play the correct notes.
OK, trap. Let me think of trap.
Pirate traps. think of trap. I don't know about pirate traps.
Pirate trap.
We saw a few in the...
Um...
Can we just like make up our own trap?
Yeah, let's make up our own traps.
Okay, make up your own trap,
because I'm really trying to think about like the other movies.
And there's not like...
There's not a ton of like pirate specific traps.
Right. It's not like we pick up a thing in the jungle and the net takes us up.
Right.
I guess the coconut thing could be instead of the trap.
That's true.
Like climbing up a coconut.
I'm climbing up a tree to then like
pull the other one in, shake it down so coconuts can fall on people.
Yeah, that's a good one, because you could kill with a coconut from that up high.
Yeah. Those puppies will kill you.
Dangerous dropping somebody off on an island.
Yeah.
That's a trap.
That's a trap.
OK.
Let us let us see. Let us see. Why don't I
cover up a hole that goes down into that the weird area with
the water and the rocks and people will fall into it and
they'll stay down there because they won't know how to get
through Aqua Davida. That's right. So they'll stay down there because they won't know how to get through Acqua da Vida. So they'll just be locked down there
in this weird rocky city. That's my trap, I guess.
I'm not in love with my trap, but like it's still a trap.
How many times can we say trap?
Do you have another one in mind?
I was thinking about something with ropes.
A lot of ropes.
Rope play.
Nope.
A lot of ropes involved.
Rope play, huh?
Nope.
Shut up.
Nope.
But yeah, so I think that, you know, having like a lever around, you know, classic one,
classic one, right? You get like a hidden rope and you have somebody walk over it and
then have them pull a trigger somewhere to trigger the rope to grab their leg. And then
they're hoisted up on the boat and then they have to hang there while the boat's ship's doing its thing
because they got tricked by the pirates.
Yo ho.
I'm just gonna go easy.
Let's just make a cake, put it in the closet.
It looks nice, light it well.
Somebody goes in there, obviously,
wow, look at that cake, close the door, lock them in.
Done, done, easy.
No ropes needed. No weapons either. We're just,
they're just in the room. And then I don't know, I guess we let them eat the cake and
then starve.
Yeah. Cake's your last meal, buddy.
Like is the trap meant, are we going to kill them after? I guess.
I guess it depends on what you want.
Yeah. You didn't give us enough rules for this Jay
We need more rules. We need let us know. Yeah
Yeah, let us know you he said must play the correct
Notes on the piano there and I'm like another one. Yeah
What happens we don't play the correct notes on the piano? Yeah, oh, do you die?
I'm assuming so.
That's...
We get clamped.
That's actually really...
That is some saw juice right there.
Like go and play chopsticks and if you can't, you're dead, dude.
The frickin' shing shing shing.
Yeah, it's bad.
Okay, well, we answered all of your questions all of two. Maybe it's because
they didn't like us and straight. Maybe they will for five. Maybe they'll come back. Okay.
Do you have any last thoughts to give the people? Um, no, this was fun. I'm curious to know where they go in five.
Does Penelope Cruz come back for five?
Will they finally kiss? I don't know, but I'm curious.
I mean, they did in this one after in the very, very beginning,
but wasn't like a juicy kiss.
Remember in the sword fight?
Yeah.
And then they did it, but it was real quick. We want to close up. We want we want to close up. We want them to be together.
Yeah. In love as pirates. Good looking people. And I want to see what the heck happened with
the Bible thumper and the mermaid. Yeah. What's going on there? Bring them back to bring
them back in five. Otherwise, I don't know. I might have to throw a fit. Okay.
