Starting point is 00:01:07 all right are you ready for the Predator let's do it wow that was fun that was good that was really good yeah guys go to the apples Spotify you give us five stars
Starting point is 00:01:28 Let's listen as you talk about this movie, Tara. Yeah. What did you think? I loved it. I thought that it was a lot of fun. It was unexpected in really every aspect. I didn't know what predator was. I was like, okay.
Starting point is 00:01:45 And then it's like a chameleon. It's an invisible man. He blended with a forest. Like what is going on? But I think in general, the camaraderie that we saw at the top with all of the military guys, was awesome. I like that it was like Carl, Carl Weathers is, is off on his own on this mission and what we find out. And he's already sent in people who have obviously been murdered by this predator and didn't stand a chance, even though he's probably sending in the best of the
Starting point is 00:02:12 best. So he has to sort of do a bait and switch with Arnold, which he figures out. But I like that they, they had each other's back even in the end where it's like Carl kind of came around to Arnold saying like just get your people out of here like I am seeking vengeance here for my team and and obviously Mac who went before him I forget but they couldn't even take care of him like this predator is some serious some serious business and I really liked how smart it was that in regards to the heat seeking like signature of course water is going to do maybe a little bit of damage to it, but the mud, because mud really does, like, hold in, like, your heat and makes you kind of a chameleon, which I really like that they played with that, because I kept thinking,
Starting point is 00:03:02 how is he really going to get away if this, because this predator is going to obviously just be able to find him wherever he is. And I especially liked, he went like mono-imano at the end because Arnold put up such a good fight that he felt like I'll take off my mask so you can see who I really am and fight you face to face, which I really love because, again, he's not human. It's a predator. It's like an alien, but it senses something within Arnold that, I mean, all of us do. He's like a one of a kind, right? And I like the way that they highlighted that in this. And that he still came out of it. In the end, Arnold is there alone. And he actually killed the predator, the alien. That's, uh, it's great. It's wild. I also felt like it gave him a little
Starting point is 00:03:52 bit of humility at the end. He could have chosen to end it with that rock in his head. But it's sort of like when he saw his face and he's bleeding out, I mean, that would probably remind me of like a comrade or something or like an animal that's hurt. Like you know he's not going to get up. And he sort of was just like, who are you? And let him sort of self-destruct on his own. Um, I really, I liked a lot of, a lot of the aspect. And I like that they didn't do the love story between them because I think it would, we don't have time, would have been too distracting. But what they did do is give them a one of a kind connection.
Starting point is 00:04:29 She spoke to Arnold, unlike she spoke to any of the rest of the men, because I feel like that was the guy that she felt like she could trust the most. That was like, not super kind to her, but like somewhat benevolent towards her, which I liked. So, yeah, great, great film for me. Loved it. Yeah, yeah. I really, really enjoyed it as well. I think watching it, I technically, again, even though I didn't remember most of what happened, again, legitimately the only thing I knew is the fact that Arnold and Carl Weathers ran it and they had the handshake thing.
Starting point is 00:04:59 And it took place in the jungle. But watching it this time around, especially after having watched the alien movies, it's interesting because it's a very different type of film. Yet it does have that similar sense of groundedness that at least the first aliens. the first alien had. Now, the thing I like the most about it is without, if you look at the simple concept of this on paper, it doesn't necessarily need to be a predator, or not necessarily a predator,
Starting point is 00:05:28 but it doesn't need to be an alien sci-fi-themed movie. Just on paper, it's like men go to jungle to find a threat that they realize is more than what they had bargained for. But that thing happens to be an alien, and that alien is humanoid. It does have at least some semblance of a code of honor. And it is something that is more like us than something like a xenomorph is.
Starting point is 00:05:55 And this is more about the game, the hunt. And I feel like xenomorphs are more about the, what's the word, like survival and expansion. So the main reason I bring this up, because obviously it wasn't until like the mid-2000s. these franchises were even associated with one another. But I imagine when these two films came out very close together, so they've had to be in the Zite guys to want to see them in these two eventually. But yeah, I really liked the camaraderie between the team. You know, I'm someone who's very much a character first.
Starting point is 00:06:30 Like, I feel like being attached to characters are really something that helps me invest in a story. Yeah. But I feel like this movie was able to get us invested in this team in a short amount of time, despite of the fact that we didn't really know much about. them but we really like their chemistry and watching them be good at their jobs and efficient end totally yeah when you when they go out you know it is it is sad and it's cool but it's also kind of kind of a bummer but the thing that made it was these like these lines that I've heard in pop culture like I don't got time to bleed right that was the best line I got time to bleed yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:07:08 I love it and watching them all do their thing together and as individuals was was very cool and very gratifying and I really enjoyed the fact that it was just a simple movie it's a simple movie of a simple premise you know they never dragged the pacing of it always persisted and once we do get to that final act where it is just Arnold versus the predator it turns into a whole other movie and it's just very satisfying watching these two individuals these two powerhouses kind of go at it with their own individual strengths like man of the jungle using the elements and the predator using his materials to try to hunt each other and you can even say that by the end of the movie arnold is also the predator but the fact that this they made a threat that could have easily been unstoppable just seemed like the this unbeatable thing that's larger than life But the fact that they showed that it could bleed really gave you a sense of hope that this is something that can be overcome. Even though it's difficult to overcome, even though he's like, it's freaking like 10 feet tall and has invisible cloaking systems, he's still killable.
Starting point is 00:08:24 And I feel like that just makes it feel even more grounded. You found a way to make a sci-fi film that is grounded, that is memorable both in its characters and its dialogue. and I understand where this is a classic. It's extremely entertaining and I, yeah, I love it. I would say, I don't know if it's fair to compare it in the aliens guys. I feel like for me personally, I still like Alien 1 and 2 a little bit more than this, but I still think it's a great film on its own. I would agree with you.
Starting point is 00:08:57 I'm like, I don't even know how to compare it, but I am edging more towards Alien 1, of course. But I liked how quickly they start out with a bang. like they went into battle right away. Then they did like a booby trap as a team. And then Arnold does another booby trap. That kind of stuff is exciting. I loved what they did with that.
Starting point is 00:09:17 I just looked at some trivia. The film provided a variety of hardships for the actor, such as leeches, snakes, stifling humidity, heat, and rough terrain. All of the night scenes were filmed during freezing cold temperatures, which was especially hard on Schwarzenegger during the latter half of the film when the mud he had to wear.
Starting point is 00:09:36 became cold and wet. He was warned it would take his body temperature down a few degrees, and he shivered nonstop. Even when they tried to heat him with lamps, he tried drinking Jaggarty, a schnapps mixture, to warm him, but that just got him drunk. Love that. The invisibility cloaking effect was achieved with a bright red suit
Starting point is 00:09:59 because it was the farthest opposite of the green and the blue of the sky. The red was ruined, with a chroma key techniques leaving an empty area, the take was then repeated without the actors using a 30% wider lens on the camera. When the two takes were combined optically, the jungle from the second take filled in the empty area.
Starting point is 00:10:22 Interesting, okay, because his second take was filmed with the wider lens, a vague outline of the alien could be seen with the background scenery bending around its shape. Cool. Okay, cool. Very inventive. Yeah, insane, right?
Starting point is 00:10:37 Jesse Ventura was delighted to find out for the wardrobe department that his arms were one inch bigger than Arnold Schwarzenegger's. He suggested to him that they measure arms, the winner would get a bottle of champagne. Ventura lost because Schwarzenegger had told the wardrobe department to tell Ventura that his arms were bigger. Wait. Wait, what?
Starting point is 00:10:58 Oh. So, wait. Oh, because they weren't bigger. So they weren't bigger. Schwarzenegger made the wardrobe department tell him. him that he thought he won. Oh, wow. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:11:11 That's great. Schwarzenegger's favorite catchphrases, get to the chopper. And it's great. Let me read one goof and then we can be done. I saw it said goof. So let me see if there's a fun one. Let's see.
Starting point is 00:11:27 When Dutch is being pursued by the predator and is sliding down the hill that leads to the cliffs, there's a rocking drive, Riverbank extending at least 50 feet and more from the cliff base. to include a tree where Dutch would land in the river, and the next shot, Dutch falls into a deep body of water with no riverbank at the cliff space.
Starting point is 00:11:43 Got it. Never would have caught that. These goofs are for people who are like continuity, like crazy people, continuity experts. Continuity connoisseurs. Yeah, like, that's it. We don't need to read anymore. Anyway, there's a bunch more trivia on there,
Starting point is 00:12:01 but you guys can get to that on your own time. You guys can get to it on your own time. Terry, do you have any final thoughts? I don't. I really enjoy this movie. I thought it was a lot of fun. I liked all the action adventure. It kind of kept me on the edge of my seat.
Starting point is 00:12:14 And I really liked how the Predator looked. I like that they used the practical effects. It was awesome and enjoyable. I thought the same. I very much enjoyed this movie myself. All right, you guys. Let us know your favorite Predator movie and your favorite little tidbit from this whole movie or franchise.
Starting point is 00:12:32 We love you guys. We look forward to see you guys in the next one. Duceus. Bye.
