More on them and just a bit.
Ladies and gentlemen of the Reject Nation, thank you so much for being.
We just watched Puss and Boots, The Last Wish, after Roxy and John covered it.
I wonder what Roxy said.
That made people mad.
We don't need to resurrect that.
anyway yeah so uh i rewatched Pustin Boots one for the first time i watched it to olivia and then we
watched Puston Boots the Last Wish now i've never seen like a i don't i don't recall seen like anything
about this movie ever come and uh what did you think i thought that was spectacular i i was
engaged not a second was i bored i think the storyline i
This is a step up massively from the first one.
Storyline-wise.
I think it's just the Shrek universe too.
Like, whoa.
It's, yeah.
This is a near-perfect film, in my opinion.
Yeah, that was amazing.
I'm engaged at the storyline from the beat one.
Like, they really jump into it.
You get that action scene and then you get the wolf showing up.
I think it also works as a movie that you don't need to see the first one.
Yeah, I agree.
I think it enhances the experience though if you do see the first one because you get the appreciation level of updated animation improvement and yeah you get the history with kitty soft pause so you're I think even though you would still be able to follow the movie obviously without seeing the first one I think having that additional context really does make it more powerful that's actually that's that's a trope I usually don't like in sequels when a movie ends where they're getting together and then
they do a sequel and either the person's not back or the terms fridging where they
they kill off the woman and they usually don't like when they do that but there's
like we got to bring them back anyway and the last one they went their separate ways and they're
like we'll meet again they they didn't end up together remember he rode off on the horse by
himself they ended up going separate ways they did they yeah yeah we literally I don't remember
that I was my second time watching too did they I don't recall that yes
I just assumed they got together he was like we'll see each other again oh yeah I just assumed they got together
they literally had that big ending scene of him and the horse by himself okay yeah I guess so
known an awesome about Humpty Dumpty no because who cares his best friend I know they replaced
him or you know is a much better character absolutely absolutely uh yeah I uh I got like some
little things uh just don't want to hit here okay kick it off um I thought that
like the themes about appreciation, mortality, and self-discovery are, especially the theme about
appreciation is a very common theme in a lot of movies. However, I think themes about mortality,
especially to this degree in an animated movie, is a rather bold choice. The implementation
of applying the rules of a cat with nine lives is a common saying. I don't know how long it's
been around. It's a common saying. And they didn't have that applied in the last movie, but
to kick it off with that and to actually provide stakes and peril and you know it has that
that sequel touch kind of a lot I mean this is like a very extreme example but like how
Logan the movie Logan has that hero on the verge of death with a bit of a melancholy touch and
there was something I really appreciate about the animation with Puss in this one because somehow
they did manage to consistently maintain that melancholic touch to his physical expression where you could always feel that bit of sadness and i don't i i have no idea what language to apply for what an animator animators have to do to have that communicate on such a subconscious level when you're drawing a cat but man that was something that i thought was so well done
because it's more than just in the text of the script.
You have to provide that in the performance of how you're animating plus.
And he consistently had that sadness and melancholic touch, which I think helped elevate it.
At the same time, the movie's not like a Debbie Downer.
Like, it still has the humor.
It's still a funny movie.
No, it had its beats where it would like have that sad moment and then follow right up with a joke or a lighthearted moment, which is good.
It did a nice balance between the two.
Yes.
I think the scene where he's having the panic.
attack in the forest and the dog has to come help him is one of the best representations of a panic attack
that I've seen in a film in general like it's so well done it's like a show don't tell
but it's subtle enough and still impactful yeah I agree I agree you know I could see why people
would probably compare this to spiderverse not just in terms of the visuals but one of the
one of the key things about spiderverse of what makes those movies work so well is that it doesn't just look cool it's that the entire movie has consistent emotional storytelling throughout in a variety of ways and this movie does live up to that like there is the that's the TMNT movie that was getting i think it's great it's one of the best digital movies but they compared it to spider verse i wouldn't put it on that same caliber of storytelling and i have i
I feel like I would kind of put this there, though, because of that ability to consistently weave in these emotional nuances throughout almost every living moment.
Yeah.
That was, that was one of them.
Like, I love the decisions they make for, because, you know, it's like, puss and, and kitty soft paws, they stand on two legs like humans, but they will make these choices of when they're supposed to be, when they're going to behave like just regular cats.
And they would do that with the dog.
And that demonstration of what a dog can do or even a cat of how they can calm down your heart rate, you know, and release oxytocin, all those things in a moment like that.
And a lot of times just to have that, what's the fucking board I'm looking for here?
That comfort level, you know, that's what animals really do provide.
and you can't tell absolutely absolutely it's this visual storytelling happening on your lap right now
but yeah the connection and the heart behind it and I love that he actually no one made a wish in the end actually I thought that was so smart
you know what I prefer about this film and what makes it a successful sequel is the villains here have more of a story and more character to them
even big jack corner you have it's not jack and jail who are very in my opinion one dimensional
villains from the first one here with goldie you get the story of her and the three bears and the
family aspect and then with jack corner he had a bad childhood whatnot and you get uh
jimony cricket trying to like bring that humanitarian before realizing he's such a lost cause
there's so much nuance between all of the characters not just the main characters that makes this
successful i agree and in some ways jack horner as someone who is lost in the idea of
of image the way how puss is i think is actually uh and and how theatrical he is the way
like in his own way and how puss is theatrical in his own way i think there's actually some cool
mirroring they do agreed i love a good story that knows how to do proper mirroring with your
beginning and end and you see it in the visuals at the very end of the movie
when you know like even like the subtlety so it's like I felt like happy to actually see that because it passed by in a flash because you know you have the moment where he does kick the sword which is a very poignant moment for puss in the beginning of the movie but even like the flash in in I don't know what those weapons are called those called skites are the skites think so that the big bad wolf has and you see like a little bit of his fear reflection of when he's fighting put
and then to go into the giant, of course.
I thought it was just so excellent.
That was such an excellent.
Even the representation of him becoming the scaredy cat
with his skin puffing up.
It's like us getting goosebumps as humans.
Yeah.
You know, it's just so well done.
And how they incorporate other fairy tales very subtly.
It's not a throw in your face,
but they do it perfectly to show that this world is still a fairy tale world.
And there's more stories.
to be told within that world, within these different fairy tales as well, that they easily could choose to do.
I hope they find, I mean, there's something kind of cool about the fact that they waited.
It seems like they waited until we really have a story we want to tell.
Versus, let's just do it because it's like the way how the Shrek franchise progressed.
We're like, yeah, let's just keep making it.
These are a hit.
Let's just keep going, going.
Yeah, this actually, they really took their time with this one, and it just shows the level of TLC that they do.
think the action scenes are probably a big talk about this movie and that was something then the last film where you know we really enjoyed that one a lot but i did we've both kind of craved like kind of cool to get a little bit more action in here they really deliver yeah they had this really cool thing i thought i noticed with the animation where it's really obvious when you're watching the action scenes and it that's when it most looks like spider verse yeah it would the kind of it looks like stop motion i don't exactly know what the terminology is for it
And it's kind of a cool visual cue for the audience to know, like, here you're going into an action scene right now.
And I'm not sure what they were going for, expressive-wise, exactly.
But throughout the entire movie, when they're not in an action scene, the backgrounds kind of always look like that, while the characters look a little bit cleaner.
So you get this really cool contrast with the characters.
Kind of like a comic book page almost.
Exactly, yeah.
A lot of this looks like comic book page and video game in the way they did their action.
and then there's something about like the world's it's sort of like energy fluid-wise when the action scenes are going down where they're now blending in with the pitcher I thought that was so beautiful it was a beautiful I don't even know when I started crying I was just like as I was happening I don't know I started tearing up a little bit during the panic attack scene because it's just so very touching touching and it was so realistic um yeah but then I did look around all he's crying I don't know I didn't pinpoint when you think I just I just I just I just I just I just I just
just assume at some point during a movie you're going to.
I didn't cry it in the last one.

you saw hunky dumpy's face it's pretty off but no i cry about love and belief that's what moves me
gross those are good things it's a good things to cry about
not death
boring
the wish
it's weird to be
I like how the movie does
the thing when not wishes
but I'm like
in my mind
I'm like
I think I still would have made it
because you're greedy
what would you want to make a wish
what would you wish though
if you've already
like if you could have one wish
right now that's not
greed and you're a millionaire
Greg what would it be
I have nothing
exactly
one way what would you wish for what would i wish for uh that i got to spend more time with my grandpa
yeah so i have you don't really have that uh
i want to spend time with olivia's grandpa that's what i would want to do understandable that's who you
are cool see the height that's why everyone loves you so much
It would be to, um, it would be to, to go back in time and, and predict everything that's going to happen in Avengers Anging.
Oh, okay.
And make a shit ton of money.
Make a ton of money.
Which make a really good point, too, about the characters of enhancing them from instead of going from just, hey, look, we're subverting expectations.
You know, you know, Jack and Jill, now they're outlaws.
Uh, I thought that's all we're going to do with Goldilocks was, all right, the Goldilocks and Three Bears, nah, they're outlaws now.
they're bad guys and instead how they progressed and they just make them so much more human
and so much more depth to them that i i feel like a lot of movies wouldn't do that and especially
for a sequel to kind of take notes of hey let's bring back what the first one did but let's really
add a lot more depth to how they do it because style will always be really cool at the same time
like that style gets lost when you're not emotionally invested in what's happening but the style
the style can consistently be impressive as long as the emotional substance is always there the
representation of death in this movie did they even do the big bad wolf right there like do you take
the big bad wolf you're like oh the big bad wolf okay he's a bounty hunter and I like the way
they played with what the big bad wolf is because in the very first scene I was kind of sold like
he was a bounty hunter but he's supposed to be metaphor
the representation of death. And then over time, you're like, oh, okay, is this just like death? Is this just like death? Is this a manifestation in this? Because you noticed on his cape how what clips it together is a wolf symbol. And so it's like, okay, is it just a manifestation? Is it in his own head? All right. So he actually is death. And then everyone finally gets to see him at the very end, you know, facing his fears against death. I wouldn't want to make a wish. I'd like I'd make a wish. I mean, I would wish for money. Yeah, exactly. But I'm saying if you take that component out of it. I wish for like a billion.
We are Jack Horner.
I wish you're billions of billions of dollars.
We're the representation of Jaghorner.
We would be greedy.
I want to be the trillionaire, please.
I want to be a massive CEO.
I don't have to pay taxes on it.
I know, right?
I want to be the big dog that's so I can skip paying taxes.
If the IRS is watching this, boy, do I have a message for you that you're not going to like?
I'm cool with that.
I think this might be my favorite film we've watched this year together.
Yeah, I'd say so.
That was a beautiful experience.
Yeah, that was incredible.
The voice performances cannot be overlooked.
They are so strong.
Antonio Mandaris, what he does with this character is very impressive.
And Salma Hyacca as well.
But they, I really feel like I'm just watching.
I don't know how to explain it.
A lot of times in voiceovers for movies, I'm kind of aware of that they're doing voiceover.
I mean like Chris Pratt or like Chris frat like every
freaking movie yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yes yeah those are solid points yeah lots
Chris frat especially I'm like I'm aware it's Chris Pratt the entire time
and then and then yeah Ryan Reynolds is like to detect the Pikachu or something
you're like it's just Pikachu's Ryan Reynolds this though I you just feel like you're
watching beans you know you're watching Puss you're not watching Antonio Benderas
yeah and he really knows how to
I feel like he's actually being directed.
Yeah.
You know, like there's so much nuance that he has to bring.
And I think it, one thing that I thought works so well with his voice now,
because Antonio Mandaris is much older than when they last made Puss and Boots,
it works so well for a character who's afraid of death of the entire time, you know?
Because he's old, you guys.
He's old.
He's feeling the mortality problems.
It's going to croak soon.
Going to croak soon.
Anyway, yeah, that was an excellent movie.
I loved it.
I loved it, 9.99.9 out of 10.
Yeah, I agree.
Yeah.
What didn't you like about it?
I don't have a complaint about this movie, honestly.
Isn't that rare?
Olivia's not bitching it moated?
I think this did a pretty phenomenal job.
I get bored easily, and I was not bored at all during this movie.
Yeah, I think it did a really great job of engaging.
me especially as an audience member.
I love the touch of the map.
Yes, how it changes for each person.
It changed for each person.
So it allows for a variety of lands.
When I think about the first person boots,
I kind of just think of like a desert.
And then the fantasy land they went into for a second.
And this just allows for such a wide variation.
And to also be a physical representation of what they're internally going through.
And for the dog character to be like just the representation of the theme of appreciation.
because that's all he is is consistently grateful no matter what terrible things are
on his way he's just he's so funny too you're like oh he's an awesome but he has looked at the silver
lining and even the bad of his life yeah it's incredible he's so funny too he's hilarious he was
great he played a great game with me with a sock and a rock like he's so they're trying to murder you
dude try to drown you oh god so he's such a
humor yeah
anyway guys what did you think
