Rush Full Reaction Watch Along: / thereelrejects Save & Invest In Your Future Today, visit: https://www.acorns.com/reject...s With Brad Pitt & Top Gun: Maverick Director, Joseph Kosinski returning for F1, Tara & Andrew RACE to give their Rush Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis & Spoiler Review!! Andrew Gordon & Tara Erickson shift into high gear with their Reaction & Review of Rush (2013), the biographical sports drama directed by Academy Award winner Ron Howard (Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind) and written by Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon). Set against the high-octane world of 1970s Formula One racing, Rush chronicles the legendary rivalry between two of the sport’s greatest drivers: charismatic British playboy James Hunt and methodical Austrian perfectionist Niki Lauda. Chris Hemsworth (Thor, Extraction) stars as James Hunt, delivering a fiery performance that captures the driver’s recklessness, charm, and relentless need to win. Daniel Brühl (Inglourious Basterds, The Alienist) earned critical acclaim for his portrayal of Niki Lauda, showcasing the driver’s steely discipline and resilience—especially in the aftermath of the horrifying 1976 Nürburgring crash that nearly cost him his life. Olivia Wilde (Don’t Worry Darling, House) plays Suzy Miller, Hunt’s model wife whose relationship becomes strained amid fame and obsession. Key moments include the gripping recreation of Lauda’s near-fatal accident, the intense final race in monsoon conditions at the Japanese Grand Prix, and the emotional reckoning between the rivals as they come to respect each other’s passion and purpose. With breathtaking racing sequences, sharp character contrasts, and emotional depth, Rush is not just about the sport—it’s about the psychology of greatness, ego, and survival. Rush commends.
Great movie.
That was so awesome.
Amazing.
Well, guys, we just watched Rush.
So if you don't mind rushing over,
if you are listening on Apple or Spotify,
to give us a five-star rating,
we would appreciate it.
Also, if you want cool, Merck and T's like these.
Get it.
I'm making sure our boss didn't text us a million.
Messages. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Rejectnation shop.com is where you can get stuff like that.
Yeah. Um, but yeah. Uh, who you want to go first? Who want me to?
I have that it. I really like this movie. Um, and the fact that's a true story is fascinating too. I'm here. Obviously, we know in Hollywood films, uh, certain parts are, are true. And then other things are Hollywoodized. Um, so I, I'm fascinated what was, um, particularly true in them, what was like,
For instance, like the scene where a hunt, you know, with the reporter where he was bad-mouthing him and then he comes to his defense and punches him.
I'm curious if like that moment, for instance, is a true thing or is that like fictionalized?
Either way, I still love that moment in the film.
Again, it shows like the character's growth.
And I love that conversation at the end and the messaging.
Like, yeah, rivalries can be very toxic, but they can also be, you know, if you, I think you use.
it best they can be balancing i mean you have to you if you use it for a strength to like push yourself
and motivate yourself in that type of way it can be a source of strength and i like that these
two characters like again when they were brown balancing it properly like that's like for uh for lauda
like when he was in the hospital bed and he was uh like fighting for his life like that's what got him
to get back up seeing hunt win all these games so if not for seeing or games uh racist if not for seeing
all that he might have never gotten out of the hospital bed we don't know um like he had that motivation
to do that was the rival the rivalry that did that for him yeah so like that was a source of strength
for him in that way um and then uh like it just made him the best version of himself from that perspective
so uh obviously again there can be negatives as well um which you saw because in the negative
effect when they should have not raced that day it's like well you're just doing this because you
want to win the championship and then that led them to doing the race which obviously caused
louder to get into it so there are negative effects too of having a rivalry so you know you got to be
careful but uh very epic film uh i thought the cinematography the actual races were incredible they did
such tough work uh you really felt like um you know you were it was very visceral very immersive
you really feel like you were there inside the cars i love the way they uh use the camera works to
rig everything up especially in the rainy scenes oh my god like my heart was scary it's very scary
i got a lot more thoughts Tara i want to hear what you have to say though yeah i loved it i mean at the
end they really put it in terms of like where the heart lies within this movie is that he's like
you are my rival but he's the only person i liked and respected and he's the only person i will ever
envy um and i feel like what we saw there at the end is in
them sharing each other's thoughts like Nikki Laudeau is a more straight-laced right and and
Hunt is out and partying and it obviously in the end he paid for it right but um I like the speech
of Lauda's like you have to get back to work why just because you want you're not going to get
back to work like you have to I I need you out there busting my balls per se and um I like how
a hunt just argued back of like what's the point of all this if you're not going to enjoy it
And that may be something that loud a lacked really in the beginning, I think until he got out of that car on that rainy day because he was like, it's too dangerous. And I should be sort of enjoying my life and my wife, right, more than I guess risking it in the rain where he and a bunch of other people might die. I really liked the the amount of like risk taking that they actually show you in this career is like mind blowing.
because we don't really, I mean, you see it on TV.
We're very used to, like, you see a Formula One race, a car blows out.
The driver's normally fine.
I mean, a few cuts and bruises.
Like, this is the 70s, so it was way more rough.
We obviously have more seatbelts and, like, all that stuff.
But seeing this here, it just really, like, gets you to be able to dive into what they do every day.
But I think us showing it through their perspective, through their rivalry, how they became friends.
yeah is actually what makes you really have a passion i think for the racing in this even if you're
not into racing and you watch this movie you're like yeah let's freaking go because of the way
they set it up where it's like it's a rivalry turned into a friendship and in in order for them
to pay the friendship back to each other they continue the rivalry that's a good way until he dies
for sure and it's interesting too with uh nicky like he is
is all about percentages.
Yes.
And, you know, with what happened with him,
with that horrible accident and fighting for his life,
it's fascinating too and makes more sense that after he survived that,
that he's the one who I would assume he's still alive.
I mean, we can look that up in a second,
but that he's still alive and then hunt
because he's such a partier in doing all these drugs
and drinking so much.
I can imagine his poor body just could not take it after,
I think they said two years later,
whatever he passed.
It was like, yeah, that makes sense
because the body can only take so much abuse
but that's just who he was.
That's the life he wanted to live.
And again, if that's what you want to do.
But I think this film also took a very smart approach
because it's such a fascinating story.
Yeah.
This film, not focusing on one character,
showing both characters' perspectives.
Because if you would have just focused on one character,
because again, from the poster, yeah, you see both of them.
I always just assumed I didn't know anything more than this other than it's a race car movie
directed by Ron Howard and it's got Thor and Zemo in it.
all I knew.
Yeah.
But I figured most of the film is going to be from Chris Hemsworth's perspective.
That's just what my initial thought was.
But then as the film was unfolding in the first 20, 30, 40 minutes, I'm like,
oh, I love that.
We're getting the backstory for both these characters.
So now we understand what motivates them, what drives them, no pun intended.
I'm like, I like this.
Like, I'm not the most likable characters, but I understand them.
And like, I see what makes them tick.
And the rivalry is what.
the film hinges on.
And I think, again,
it was just smart to focus
on both of them
from that perspective.
I appreciate that.
So, yeah,
really, really good stuff.
Great, great chemistry
between the two actors,
Daniel Broll and Chris Hemsworth.
Like, it was fun to watch on screen, too.
They were awesome together.
They did a great job.
Yeah.

I got some trivia pulled up.
Oh.
Let's do it because we're a little bit behind today.
Are we?
Yeah, we are.
You do that and while you're doing that, I got one other thing to do while you're doing that.
Okay.
So when Nikki Lauda first saw Rush, he said, shit, that's me.
Ha, ha, ha, ha.
Which is great.
In an interview with the Austrian Times on the occasion of his 60s birthday,
Nikki Lauda stated that a journalist asking him how his injured face affecting his marriage
was the biggest insult he had to suffer in his life.
Oh, so that was true.
That they did ask him that.
Horrible.
The James Hunt, Nikki Lauda,
1976 race, depicted in the film
was the last Formula One event
staged on Germany's notorious North Loop
since the lap was deemed far to hazardous.
Wild.
So they, full well knowing, like how it could kill people.
That's crazy to me.
So neither of them, Daniel or Chris,
they weren't allowed to drive a real Formula One car.
They had to use Formula 3 vehicles.
Wow.
That's amazing.
With fake bodywork instead, which is what they do in Fast and the Furious, right?
It's like a VW engine and you just plop a shell on it.
So Daniel and Nikki Lauda, they became good friends.
Lauda even flew the actor to say it to Sao Paulo Grand Prix and his private jet, which he piloted himself.
That's cool because we saw at the end that he was a pilot.
Yes.
Very cool.
And I'm just going to read one more because we're kind of run out of time here.
although this makes much of the rivalry between James Hunt and Nikki Lauda, in reality,
the two were very good friends and even shared a flat together at one point in their careers.
What, Nikki and James?
They were roommates.
Oh, that's very cool.
That is wild.
Just really quick.
And then I want you to do this.
And then I know we got to go.
It was Olivia Wild, not Olivia Munn.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
And it was Hans Zimmer who composed the film.
That's why the score was so damn epic.
That was why it was great.
Really, really quick.
Yeah.
Rotten Tomatoes.
What was the critics?
Okay.
So I'm going to go with critic score being 75.
And maybe audience was, maybe it was lower.
People are weird.
Okay, nope.
I'm going to change it.
Critic is 72 and audience is 68.
Both 88.
Dang.
Awesome.
Amazing.
That's awesome.
