Episode Date: June 4, 2026

As we prep for the Alien Thriller Disclosure Day from Steven Spielberg, we visit M Night Signs! Signs (2002) Full Movie Reaction & Review with Tara Erickson and Jackie Bonsignore! Signs Full Movie Un...cut Watch Along:   / thereelrejects   Check out the DC Studios: Showcase Podcast HERE https://app.magellan.ai/listen_links/... Support The Channel By Getting Some REEL REJECTS Apparel! https://www.rejectnationshop.com/ In this highly anticipated movie review and reaction, Tara and Jackie conquer a brilliant slow-burn rewatch that perfectly mirrors the escalating dread of a modern extraterrestrial declassification event. We unpack the phenomenal performances of the legendary stellar cast, featuring Mel Gibson (Braveheart, Lethal Weapon) bringing deep emotional grief as the lapsed minister Graham Hess, Joaquin Phoenix (Gladiator, Joker) as his supportive, minor-league baseball-playing brother Merrill Hess, and Rory Culkin (Succession, Scream 4) as the analytical young son Morgan Hess. We also celebrate the incredible early career debut of Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine, Zombieland) as the adorable, water-obsessed daughter Bo Hess, alongside critical supporting roles from Cherry Jones (24, The Handmaid's Tale) as Officer Caroline Paski and M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable) in a pivotal, guilt-ridden cameo as Ray Reddy. Our hosts react to every single iconic jump scare, atmospheric visual clue, and brilliant narrative payoff that hits completely differently in the wake of real-world disclosure trends. We break down the absolute shock of discovering the initial massive crop circle patterns, the creeping suspense of tracking alien reconnaissance frequencies on an old baby monitor walkie-talkie, and the legendary, spine-chilling Brazil birthday party found-footage reveal that left our hosts completely terrified. We dissect the heavy psychological weight of Graham recounting his late wife Colleen’s final words, before diving straight into the terrifying climax where the family boards up the house, retreats into a claustrophobic coal shoot basement, and faces a lone alien up close. Tara and Jackie wrap up by analyzing the absolute genius of the final "swing away" baseball bat sequence, where Bo’s abandoned glasses of tap water become the ultimate defense weapon, and Morgan's closed asthmatic lungs miraculously protect him from lethal poison gas. Starting point is 00:01:44 Okay. Jackie. How do you feel after all that? That was a much more emotional movie than I thought it was going to be. And also it really did freak me out. Uh-huh. Yeah. Because, I mean, you're scared of aliens.
Starting point is 00:02:02 really scared of it. You said that right off the bat. Well, I think that what was really interesting to me was that obviously, I feel like there are a couple moments in the script that sort of like, there were decisions that the father made that kind of pissed me off. Like, yeah. Why didn't he think to like make sure that he has the son's inhaler like in his pocket? Like, why wouldn't you guys grab weapons ahead of time? But then if we're considering like that, the whole movie is about about like signs and miracles. Well, the fact that he didn't have his inhaler ended up saving him and then the fact that they didn't have
Starting point is 00:02:38 weapons ended up making him have to use the baseball bat which then helped them figure out that it's water. Right, exactly. So I don't, so it's really interesting. What did you think? That you're like, dang, that girl had a contamination tick her whole life with the water's contaminated
Starting point is 00:02:55 for us to be able to get to this point to kill the aliens. Exactly. It's like the evil witch right to even witch like and then water right water kills the witch I think that's what happens I loved it I think this movie was great I think the script
Starting point is 00:03:11 was really really smart I think it was it's really tough when you're in a sci-fi horror-esque type of a vibe we're not quite sure what's going on but to add in a comedic element where the timing is dead on the pacing of this and when the
Starting point is 00:03:28 comedy came in perfect in my opinion. And obviously the delivery was really, really great with everyone. I think that I would like to give this movie the most credit for the casting. The kids in this movie, are you kidding? Rory Colkin
Starting point is 00:03:44 and Abigail Breslin, amazing. Obviously, Melon and Joaquin, yeah, great. Actors. The kids, though, made this film for me in their line delivery, in how they had a bunch of funny lines too so believable their relationship i mean honestly to me abigail brezlin
Starting point is 00:04:09 reminds me of drew barrymore in et the same level if you think about um those kids at that age how they're able to display emotion so believably to me it's it's wild behavior and i think she did an amazing job and now i'm like if this is one of her first films i get it holy moly like i I freaking get it. I loved it. I was like, I was on board the whole way and I felt like the pacing of this film
Starting point is 00:04:37 they did an amazing job. I didn't feel the time. I was hooked in, really, right at the top. Love the music at the top. And then obviously throughout. But really, the acting and the pacing took me there
Starting point is 00:04:52 and this script was a lot more fun than it leads you to believe it would be. Which signed me up for, man. Yeah, let's go. The comedy was so, unexpected. There were some of it that was so funny dude. Do you have any favorite part? Like in this, like in thinking about it right now,
Starting point is 00:05:11 is there anything that you're like, wow, that one part I'll remember from this film? I think this wasn't a funny moment, but the moment where Rory is just holding out his hand and Abigail runs up and grabs it. That is just replaying in my mind. And then what was her line that she said in the back of the car that just took me out? I can't remember right now. Oh, she goes, she goes, why can't they get girlfriends? Why can't they get girlfriends?
Starting point is 00:05:36 That was so funny. And the thing is, is that pacing like that, it was directed really well because they're having a conversation. He talks saying they can't get girlfriends. Dad says something. The brother responds going blah, blah, blah. And then there's still two seconds in between. And she's like, why can't they get girlfriends? And you're like, oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:05:56 Pacing. No, it's so funny. So solid. I love it. Okay, so we both loved it. We do have a lot. We have some good amount of questions here. Let's do, let's get into this. So our first question is from ZB. K and D. Zibbkand, Zibkund. Zsbikund, says this movie always tends to be criticized for the bland delivery of the actors. Really? But I think it's intentional if you try to understand the dynamics of this family.
Starting point is 00:06:26 Just lost their major arc who seemed to be the light in their lives. the trauma of this was so devastating that even when faced with the end of the world, they would have somewhat detached approach on how to face this. I think it's beautiful how the story slowly reveals how she died in the final flashback leading to Graham to realize there are no coincidences and regain his faith in order to win. Just curious if you guys were put off by the acting or do you think it fits the story? What do you think, Jay?
Starting point is 00:06:52 You think, were you put off by some of the acting? Do you think it fits? Or like if you were, if you were, were put off by it with what was it like i mean i wasn't really put off by it at all because i really did feel like it fit the family dynamic at that time right especially um when the dad had the meltdown at the table and immediately like instead of like running away from the dining room table and running upstairs the sun knew like that he it was time to go to him like clearly i don't think that they have talked a lot about the mother passing right you know that was made really clear so no
Starting point is 00:07:29 I thought they were sort of very sardonic tone really fit it. And I thought it was, I thought it really worked for the movie. I don't know. I really liked it. Yeah. I'll be honest with you. I think that's wild if people are saying there's a bland delivery. When you're looking at actors in that regard, you have to go straight to the director.
Starting point is 00:07:50 There's plenty of like films and things that I see where I'm like, I probably wouldn't have done it that way, but I was directed in a different way. But I think that the way that. any of their responses were as very believable to me. I mean, you have to look at it. I do not see it as bland. I saw it as very, very believable. He just lost his wife. It makes
Starting point is 00:08:11 sense that it was only six months ago. He leaves the church. His brother moves in. This is not their life right now. It's only been six months. This, to me, is not bland. It's like, this is life and now we're dealing with aliens.
Starting point is 00:08:27 I don't, and I'm sure Zbikund, can't even say your name, Zipikunda, that it's not like everyone was saying bland, so I'm not sure exactly what they were saying, but to me, the dynamics of the family totally made sense. I mean, the brother just moved back in to help take care of his brother after losing his wife, and these kids are getting used to that dynamic.
Starting point is 00:08:51 They just lost their mom, and now we got to put on tinfoil hats. Okay, you're already in shock, and then something even more shocking happens? Like the end of the world, that's crazy because they're already living in somewhat end of their own world. When you feel it with kids that young and a dad who's like left the church, we're swimming in it. We're swimming in grief right now. So I really liked it. I thought that the way it was directed and performed was great and not overdone because he could have really overdone it and directed Mel to be like kind of a yelling mess.
Starting point is 00:09:26 Yeah. to be really angry that he lost his wife and now he's these kids. And that's why the brother's, that's why the little kid says, I wish you were my dad. But I think the way it was directed, I liked it that I believe me and Jackie both went, what? That's wild behavior. Like, why would he say that?
Starting point is 00:09:46 Because we didn't see enough from Mel Gibson's character to push us in a way where it was like, you're a dick of a dad. It's like, no, everybody's just hurting here. I found it very believable. Um, yeah, all right. Let's, let's do our next question. You want to read the one from Marlow? Okay.
Starting point is 00:10:04 Reject Nation real quick. Come here to shout out. The DC Studio showcase the official podcast. It's one of the few people here who covers DC quite consistently on the channel. I know how fast this stuff turns into rumors, theories, hype, panic, arguments. All of it. And that is why I think this show is genuinely valuable. For you guys who are unaware of this podcast, the D.
Starting point is 00:10:26 DC Studio showcases your inside source for everything happening across DC studios. The movie shows comics, the whole universe. What makes it special is that it's not just an official podcast. It's official access with people who actually know how to have the conversation. Like they've already had major DC voices on the show such as James Gunn and Jim Lee and then cast members from the Superman movie. And across the DC universe and now season two is leveling up. You've of course got Frankie Smith, who is amazing. I've met her a few times.
Starting point is 00:10:59 Wonderful host. And of course our main man of the hour, Coy, Gondro. It's them hosting. Now, if you have watched Coy on this channel, Real Rejects, you know he's not going to ask the generic questions. Coy brings comic knowledge, film knowledge, deep cuts, fan passion, character, psychology, so you truly get interviews you don't get anywhere else.
Starting point is 00:11:21 On a very sincere note, I'm very, very proud of the guy. He's been able to graduate from being off, the side of the desk now being the official main co-host, and he absolutely deserves it. He's brilliant. In this season, their trailer has already teased that they're covering Supergirl, Clayface, lanterns, and more with, of course, interviews from Millie Alcock, Jason Mamoa, who's playing Lobo, and Supergirl director, Craig Gillespie,
Starting point is 00:11:42 talking on-set stories, personal insights, and bringing these characters to life. Plus, there's just going to be surprised guests popping in all season. So you can check out the DC Studio Showcase on their official HBO Max YouTube channel using the QR code that's been here on the screen, or the link in the description box in Pinn Gutman. And listen to HBO Max or wherever you get your podcasts. New episodes drop every other Friday. Subscribe so you do not miss one.
Starting point is 00:12:03 This DC Studio showcase, wherever you get your podcast. And if you're a fan of real rejects, go support them because it's coy and he's one of the rejects. Thank you guys so much. Back to the video. Marlowe asks, many characters cope differently with this type of crisis. M. Knight's character retreating to the lake. Oh, examples. M.
Starting point is 00:12:19 Knight's character retreating to the lake, the pharmacy character needing to confess her sins and Graham's family clinging to routine. What would be your way of coping with an alien invasion? Find a weapon. I find a weapon. Get into the liquor cabinet. We do gop-gopi, goopee. Eat all the junk food.
Starting point is 00:12:39 Sign me up. Board the windows, like I said, that was wild. But I was like, I would start boarding windows. He was like, well, we should board the windows. I was like, okay, buddy. Except what I didn't like is that they weren't looking for weapons. because I'd be like, we need to get a weapon in here.
Starting point is 00:12:55 That part made me mad. Yeah. That made me a little bad. Right? Where I'm like, at least get the fire poker and a knife. Like, have something. It just felt like both of the men like had no idea what they were doing. And I'm like, come on.
Starting point is 00:13:06 Let's think here. These are brains. Yeah, like get away. Because he had the instinct. I mean, at least to grab the knife. He chopped the hand off when he was at the other house. But so I think I would do that. And I would cope with just, you know, we drink, we eat snacks.
Starting point is 00:13:21 Chilling. Chillin. during the alien invasion, okay? What about you, Jackie? What are you thinking? What are you, how are you coping? I would definitely try to, well, if the phones are still working,
Starting point is 00:13:34 I would get my group together, you know, make sure that we, like, shelter in place in, like, a good spot, make sure that we have some weapons. And probably the same as you board up the windows, probably gulp-gulp-y, gulp-y, and then if it gets really bad, like, if it gets to War of the World's level,
Starting point is 00:13:51 I'm gonna... remove myself. Yeah. I'm removing. I get it. Go bye. Yeah, you have to be like... Self delete.
Starting point is 00:13:59 You have to be really close and then you're like, bye, right? But I like, I want to like stick around in case because look, they left, the aliens left. Yeah. But it's only if it gets so dire, you know. To where he's, he, the alien is coming to eat you. And then you're like, okay, got to take myself out of the equation. Yeah, if it was just one alien like they had in their living room, then I'd try to fight back. but if it's like
Starting point is 00:14:22 How many do we need to have for you to go bye bye For you to do it Well we just watch four of the worlds And you know that scene where they're all going to jump on the boat Yeah I kill myself I'm sorry I can't You have to cut that out sorry
Starting point is 00:14:35 You're out of the editor You take yourself out of the equation I would take I would remove myself If it was like the big spider one stuck in the boat Yeah those were big Those were scary No Those were a lot
Starting point is 00:14:48 I'm not I'm not I'm not I'm not the one Those were so cool looking though. I remember just going, wow, that's wild. Like, it's scary as hell, but also, like, what's going on here? Crazy. Okay. So we kind of do the same things, but she'd be like, bye, maybe.
Starting point is 00:15:08 You know what? You know what? I don't know. Actually, I feel like I'm saying that if an alien, like the one in this movie was in my living room, that I would fight it back. Yeah. I think I'm underestimating how scared I'd. be like I think I'm like talking kind of big right now you're I'm like wait actually imagine it in the
Starting point is 00:15:26 room like you're confessing you we see one right there and you're like bye bye bye bye for ever like yeah okay all right God speed soldiers yeah I'm gone I'd be like all right well thanks for your help look here I'm ready you know what I mean I got some scissors I'll use a pencil on your ass let's freaking go you know what I'm saying I'm I'm ready to go vengeance but Okay, Jackie's out of here. She's leaving me on my own. All right. Lauren says, at what point would you have put on your own tinfoil hat?
Starting point is 00:15:59 I left so hard to reveal it at what case. Totally. It was with them three together. That was one of my favorite moments. That was great. I think we both were like, wow, that's hilarious. I love that. Yeah, okay, what are you thinking?
Starting point is 00:16:11 When would you tinfoil it? I would have tinfoil up like pretty early on. I mean, you were pretty against the beginning, though, Jackie. you were like that you were like no this this she's all like hippie-dippy book and now she's like I tinfoil it from the top let me let me be clear let me be clear I'm like okay girl when it was when it came to like watching the news broadcast
Starting point is 00:16:37 and when we saw all those different signs in India I would have immediately been like yes it's aliens I don't know if I would ever be like I need to wear the hat so they can't read my thoughts Like I don't think I would ever tinfoil had it that way. But I would be like, yes, it's aliens. Like, it's absolutely aliens. I don't know if I'd wear the hot though. Oh, I'm talking about I see one spaceship.
Starting point is 00:17:06 Tinfoil all over my body. I don't choose my head. Let's go. Tinfoil underneath plastic bag on top. So if they try to grab me, it's a little slippery. No. Plastic bag on top. Plus, we baby.
Starting point is 00:17:18 oil it. Try to grab me now, bionch. You're just going to slip and slide away. Correct. Can't read my mind. Don't even know if my blood's boiling because I'm aluminum foiled up all over. Got a plastic bag on, baby oiled it up. I'm living through the whole, through everything,
Starting point is 00:17:36 through the nuclear war. You can just start running and then like slide down a hill and you can get away so fast. Good times. Right? I'm like, whoo, it's party time now because also as we've talked about, gulp, gulp, Gopi Gopi. So now I'm honestly just having a great, grand old time, even though the world is, I guess, crashing down around me. But hey, that's the way to go, right? All right. You take Nikki Sunreezes. All right. Nikki Sunriza asks, hey Jackie and Tara, I hope you enjoyed the movie. It's one of my favorite M-night Shammelon movies. Do either of you believe in intelligent life on other planets? And if so, do you think they would be good, neutral, or invaders the way that they're most often portrayed in? media. I feel like they would be like
Starting point is 00:18:22 neutral. Like they got stuff up there. They got the whole space thing going on. Like what do we got? It's not that great down here. To be honest. Except for, you know, there's some places. They got good cocktails and some good food and stuff. But other than that, I'm like, what do we got going on? I don't think they would be like, let's get rid of us all. I'm like, we're down here struggling.
Starting point is 00:18:48 probably way more than they are. They're up there doing, they have all this, like, they're like crop circles. We're like, we don't understand what you're trying to tell us. Like, they're more intelligent than us. I don't think they're going to be fighting to come down here. But that's what I think. What do you think? I think that if we are in space la.
Starting point is 00:19:07 Project Hell Mary and we run into them, I would say, like, good neutral. Yeah. But I think that if a spaceship came down here, again, I just think the only reason why they'd want to invade is maybe if something was going really wrong. But then in that case, I would say, well, maybe they are neutral.
Starting point is 00:19:28 Maybe they do ask for help. But I just think that, like, our president would start shooting them immediately. And then they would turn hostile. Of course. Yeah. Of course. And then we would be dead. And then we'd be dead. Well.
Starting point is 00:19:41 Lots to think about. Yeah. That might be our future. We'll see. Okay, Jaden Rhodes. I always found this to be an underrated M. Knight movie. It's easily top three of all of his movies, but I'm curious which one is your favorite.
Starting point is 00:19:58 I don't know if I've seen like all of his movies. Yeah, can you look them up? Let me look up all those that he's movies. Also, that was him in the movies. It was? You were right, yeah. I was right. Okay, because I was like, that looks like him. Okay, so yeah, that's totally him.
Starting point is 00:20:19 side camera. Okay. Let's go to the movies. Nothing right. Let's just do director. Oh, where is movies? Previous. Oh, there we go. Okay. That makes you old. Yeah, I haven't seen that.
Starting point is 00:20:45 Wow, I haven't. So I haven't seen like most of these. I actually don't know if I've seen any of these. Oh, wait. Okay, I saw the six cents a long long long time ago is that the one where they're dead and the little boy can i think he's like oh it's like a good yeah well i think you're right about that that literally like when it came out i think i i don't remember much of that i'm going to unbreakable i don't know if i haven't seen i don't think i've seen that you guys honestly okay maybe i've only seen the six sense
Starting point is 00:21:22 and split wait split have I seen split I didn't see it no I don't I don't know if I saw split either you guys okay well we don't know because we've only we've only seen we've only see this one size I don't know and I've never seen knock at the cabin I didn't see the cabin I didn't see old some movie called trap 20 I wanted to see trap but then I didn't go to see it so we don't know that's a good question yeah we're Sorry. So this is the favorite one that I've seen. That's so good.
Starting point is 00:21:56 This is the only one she's seen. All right. Take our last one from Jay Rushden. All right. Jay Rushden asked, question, what part of dialogue stuck out with you from the movie? The whole scene of them and the sheriff talking was very well done. And then I think is that last part of question?
Starting point is 00:22:12 Or is it a statement? Also, Jackie's now, she jacked more ladies. Yeah, that's right, Jay. Yeah. More lady's statement. Yes. I mean, oh, so how do you feel about the, that sheriff's scene? Or, well, I mean, your dialogue.
Starting point is 00:22:31 Which sheriff's scene is he talking about? I assume how I'm taking it, Jay is. I think, I mean, how I felt where I felt like, oh, this is a really great scene. I mean, they were all great. The one by the car in the beginning, great. But the one really at the end where he goes, this is the last time I'm going to see my wife. And she's like, yes. and the way that she talks to him,
Starting point is 00:22:53 especially in that moment, is just, she's such a brilliant actor. And she was so big back in, like, early 2000s. Like, I think she still does, she still is in stuff now, just not as regularly. But I do love her. That was the scene to me that I would assume you're maybe talking about, but she's great all around.
Starting point is 00:23:15 Well, you really like the line. Why get to get girlfriends? But is there any other stuff that stuck out to you from here? I loved any of the sheriff's scenes, especially the one that you just mentioned, just because, I mean, she really was not a, she was a large character in the movie, but she didn't really have all that much dialogue. I feel like if we counted out, it wasn't a lot. But I could just, there was something in her eyes, in her delivery,
Starting point is 00:23:46 where I could tell that their friendship clearly goes, way back even even before the way totally even before the flashback took place and it was just I could see the love the platonic love that they had yeah each other there so any scene with her yeah especially our introduction to her when she was talking about the crazy lady yeah fitting on the skateboards you know I loved her she was great she's so good and especially when she's well I don't know I've seen the ladies at the Olympics they can really run I love that and and her vibe just comes off as this
Starting point is 00:24:19 very believable. I think that like if I saw more of M. Night Shaman's work, I would, I would be most likely convinced that he does a pretty good job casting, but I'm not, I'm not sure, because I haven't seen all in his list. But now it makes me want to watch more because for this movie specifically, I think the casting was a phenomenal job. There was not one misstep. The fact that I called out, that's a five and underline, the news reporter. That's a five and under. All he said was, you know, he's getting caught up and he's like, so it seems like they're here, whatever, one other line.
Starting point is 00:25:00 This is breaking news. It's all we know. So very believable that I'm like, thank you for casting it properly. And literally, that could be a throwaway thing where you're not paying a lot of attention to the news caster. And if their emotional availability is believable, his was. and that's why I called it out. It's a small part, but to me, I'm like,
Starting point is 00:25:23 you put in the effort and you cast the right person, that to me makes all around the entire film great, because now there wasn't one misstep. So, of course, I don't even need to call out the wife when she's there. And she's like, I can tell Marital Swinging. All fantastic. All great job. So I want to watch more of his movies because I would want to be like,
Starting point is 00:25:41 how did you cast the rest? Because I think that, like, for me, awesome. Okay. You have any other, what's your last, last little thoughts about this movie? Anything else? Hmm. Anything you liked, didn't like? I thought, I think it was interesting for an alien movie to sort of wait and not, like,
Starting point is 00:26:06 we only saw a leg or a hand until the last 15 minutes of the movie. Totally. I felt like it really did work in this movie, you know? You felt the payoff. Because it's the fear of the unknown. which is exactly why I am a real-life person who is so afraid of aliens. It's because it all is the fear of the unknown. So I felt like this film really played off of that and into that,
Starting point is 00:26:30 especially also with the cinematography and with the shots. Totally. No, it freaked me on. I didn't like it. I mean, I was scared. Don't be mad that I said I didn't like it. I didn't like, I don't. It was scary.
Starting point is 00:26:46 I liked it as a movie. But I was scared. Yeah. All right, well, the movie did its job. Dracula, have nightmares tonight about ancient aliens. I, however, will be dreaming about them in thinking, do I have to prepare for a fight? Like, is this what's going to get me to, like, work out more?
Starting point is 00:27:06 You know what I mean? Like, do I got to go and, like, train in, and be a ninja? You have a good idea. You know what? I needed a reason to work out more. And I think that that's working. You've got to get, you've got to give them. program Jackie like because we've got to get prepped well yeah i saw a real today of a girl um taking
Starting point is 00:27:25 going she had a case of edibles and she said i'm going to take the whole thing and then she played like spooky scary guys chasing you music and she was like i hit my personal record and i'm like wait should i try this why is she doing that so she'll run so she'll run that's why i okay Jackie, my brain needed to go there. You had the ad. She took it and the scary music and she runs. I thought she was just sitting there, listening to it, and screaming and being like.
Starting point is 00:27:54 I forgot to say that she's running. I think I made it five minutes. Being terrified. I was like, what? Who is this woman? I'm going to take a big edible and play the soundtrack to this film. And then I'm going to run two, like five miles. It'll be great.
Starting point is 00:28:07 Let me know how it goes. I won't be doing it. She's afraid of the aliens. I'm not come and get me, huh? It's all right down here. I'm fine. All right, we love you guys. Leave all the comments. Be nice, be cool, be kind. We'll see you. On the next one. Bye.
