We break down David Corenswet’s earnest portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman (his first “my Superman” for many fans), Rachel Brosnahan’s fiery Lois Lane (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Nicholas Hoult’s cunning Lex Luthor (X‑Men & Nosferatu), Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific (X‑Men: First Class), Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl (The Last Of Us Season 2 & Dora and the Lost City), Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern (Firefly), plus The Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría), Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan from Barry) and Perry White (Wendell Pierce). The prior DCEU era form Zack Snyder had Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Shazam! and Justice League—but now we look forward to upcoming DCU films: sequels to Superman, Peacemaker Season 2, Lanterns, The Batman 2, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl, Teen Titans, Clayface, Wonder Woman, plus The Authority and Swamp Thing. When the frustration grows and the doubts start to creep in, we all need someone who has our back. To tell us, we'll be okay, to remind us of our ability, to believe, because their belief in us transfers to self-belief and reminds us. us of all that we're capable of. We all need someone to make us believe.
Starting point is 00:00:34 Hashtag, you got this. At Grey Goose, we believe that pleasure is a necessity. That's why we craft the world's number one premium vodka in France, using only three of the finest natural ingredients, French winter wheat, water from Jean-Sac and yeast. With Grey Goose, we invite you to live in the moment and make time wait. Sip responsibly. Ladies and gentlemen, we literally just got out of watching the newest Superman movie from director James Gunn.
Starting point is 00:01:09 You might hear some music. There's this after-party thing going on right now. Don't let my calm demeanor fool you. It is only because I am so confident in how I feel about this movie. And I want to let that calmness really convey what it is. Please leave a like on this video. Whoa. Hey, who's that?
Starting point is 00:01:28 Oh, my God. Look at a plane. It's Roxanne. It's Roxie Stryer. Like Superman. Okay. Where to begin with this? John, why don't you just give your first thoughts and impressions right now, please? No, yeah, I was overjoyed watching this. I mean, this has all of the different flavors I think that you could hope for from a Superman movie. Like, it's not just a fuddy-duddy, like do-gooder story, but that obviously is a part of the character, and it represents it well. It represents the humanity of Superman and the debate of his presence here on earth amongst us mere mortals. And David Corrin Sweat is just so charming and so real as a guy who, yeah, we can all look up at,
Starting point is 00:02:09 but who also feels like just a kid trying to make it through the day, trying to be there for his dog, trying to get to work, trying to be there for his love, his family, try to be there for the people who need saving. And somehow, even with all these other characters and all this, you know, amalgamation of, where the world is now. It never felt overwhelming. And it was a blast, but it was also heartfelt. I mean, how are you feeling? I'll just say it. It's my favorite Superman movie I've ever seen. You could accuse me a recency bias. You can say it's hyperbole. Call me a shill. I don't give a shit. I really feel like this is the best Superman movie. I'm going to fucking cry again.
Starting point is 00:02:47 It's happening right now. I'm like dazed. I know I got a reputation for being someone who's easily pulled the tears. But this was the first Superman movie that made me go like, I want to be a better person, you know? And I feel often, like, with Superman, as even as great as like Christopher Reeves or is even like Tyler is in Superman Lois, I really enjoy Man to Seal. Like, I love so many of the Superman renditions. This was the first Superman movie that I actually felt inspired. It was the first one where, like, yeah, he, they really captured the humanity of him in a
Starting point is 00:03:18 way that feels like a true struggle, the vulnerability of the Superman. He really feels like a boy from Kansas trying to do his best and, and, and, and, and, and, and, And also, that's the thing, is like a guy trying to do his best when everything seems to be pushing up against acceptance. He is trying his best all the time. Every time. And I felt like I identify with the struggle. And I really did feel like, hope, it's like they, you hear about Superman, you think about hope. And this was the first time I really felt like I hope I can be a better person.
Starting point is 00:03:49 It was so fucking weird. I've never, I've never had this with a Superman movie, much less a comic book movie before. And you hear that, like, trope about Superman. And I think David Cornswet and the script from James Gunn really captured it. I don't think it's like a 100, if this was like a 100% metric meter, I would say there's like one to two percent of things that I'm like, okay, maybe this could have dialed back a tiny bit. But that solid 98 to 99% of this experience, I was so moved by from beginning to end, David Cornswet. is my Superman, undoubtedly. I've never connected this much with a Superman in my entire life.
Starting point is 00:04:31 Absolutely. He really brings you into that idea of the good fight and the struggle that it is to keep that up, but he is so effortlessly charming and so effortlessly affable. And yet, you know, in the moments of intensity, he also carries that really well. And like this movie, there's a scene in the trailers that we've seen, you know, a hundred times now where, you know, he's having this interview with Lois. and it was about that point in the movie where I really started to kind of feel the awe set
Starting point is 00:04:57 and of like, man, you know, you can have debates about the themes of this character, you can deconstruct the character, but you can still classically portray, at least my understanding of the character, in a way that matches the modern time, but that also doesn't feel like it has to, you know, cowtow to the whims of the now.
Starting point is 00:05:16 And it is really rousing and sweeping and moving, and it does speak to that good nature within all of us. to just want to try and support our fellow people and the rivalry, you know, obviously with Lex Luthor is something that is really, really well handled in this movie because, I mean, Nicholas Holtz as well, like hats off to that performance
Starting point is 00:05:36 and to, again, like the ideological matchup that that represents his intellect, but also his devastating physical ability and the way that, you know, that brings in also sci-fi elements to the movie and whatnot and just the whole ensemble I thought really fleshed out this world in a way that feels modern, obviously, but also
Starting point is 00:05:57 like a comic book in a fun way that I don't feel like we've experienced recently. And I mean, you know, obviously we've had the debate about gritty, realistic down-to-earth superhero movies. And not that this movie never gets gritty, but it really does feel like a living comic, and it really does feel like it's got that quirk
Starting point is 00:06:12 and that esoterica and that color without feeling silly or goofy or, you know, too kids-centric or anything that people seem to bemoan about a Superman story. Yeah, I mean, for talking about comic, I read before this in the past couple of weeks, I read All-Star Superman. I read Superman Birthright. I met Superman for All Seasons.
Starting point is 00:06:32 And thank you, Coy, for those recommendations. And James Gunn actually cited those movies. And Superman for All Seasons is the comic that really captures. Superman Birthright is my personal favorite. This visually and tonally has a bit of that weird quirkiness that All-Star Superman has, that oddity. You know, that might take people some a little bit of adjusting to. And the thing that this really captures, though, is from Superman for all seasons, where while this guy might be looked at as godlike alien, he's really a person who is the product of his upbringing from Jonathan and Martha Kent. And that performance resonates throughout all of David Cornswet and the way he interacts with everyone.
Starting point is 00:07:18 his relationship with Lois Lane, him and Rachel Brosnahan have incredible chemistry. Reject Nation. Life's only gotten busier, filming, working out, getting a new studio, all the moving. But I've learned that when I stay consistent on what I put in my body, I perform better across the board. No joke. Mentally, physically, all in all. In case you didn't catch the memo, back in January, I weighed 218 pounds. As of late, I'm down to 173. Here's a latest photo right here. I'm working on body composition right now. I've got to get that full six-pack abs. And Hewle's Black Edition Ready to Drink has been a big part of that journey. Got so much in that fridge right there.
Starting point is 00:08:01 I really love the chocolate one, a complete meal in a bottle. It's got 35 grams of protein, 27 essential vitamins and minerals, slow release carbs, high fiber, low sugar, perfect for my diet plan. No cooking, no prepping, just grab and go. And especially now in the middle of summer. I'm moving fast, baby. And Huell's always ready. Oh, you just put in the fridge. This tastes so good. Especially, it's kind of hot in here, and this tastes really good. You toss in your bag, drink between shoots and your workouts like me. Fules me without slowing me down whatsoever. I can drink it on the road. Love the taste genuinely awesome. No chalky after tastes like a lot of other shakes. They got a bunch of other flavors. Chocolate's my personal
Starting point is 00:08:37 favorite because I'm a chocolate fanatic. And as someone who loves chocolate, but has to avoid most chocolates because I'm trying to be healthy to have a chocolate shake. Thank you, God. Hewles delivered over 500 million meals worldwide, and now is your chance to try it. So if you'd like to support the channel, but more importantly, support your health. Starting point is 00:09:04 Skip the stress, not the nutrition. Try heal today for complete nutrition bottled. They're in that early stages of dating is the one thing I'll say. And I love the setup that they gave with Lois, because you see how. incredible of a journalist that she is but where she's at in life where you have these two opposing people when it comes to a relationship one is Superman who is like looks for the best in people is very open and wants to see the beauty and all and then you got Lois who's very cynical and skeptical and not trustworthy and closed off and how did these two like mesh how do they bring out
Starting point is 00:09:39 the best in each other and then watching when they do go at odds that it feels like a real dynamic, a real relationship. Yeah. And of course, like you were talking about his dynamic with Lex Luthor, I think Nicholas Holt is incredible in this role. He plays, it's the Lex who has the billionaire side of him, the greedy, capitalistic side, but then you see the scientific side behind him. And they don't explicitly say this in the movie, but shades
Starting point is 00:10:10 of what I was picking up on of this guy. I mean, they talk about the envy, but the shades that I was picking up on is like this dude uh just feels so inferior to Superman the entire time and you could see where he's seething from that like I just started imagining some of the backstory with Lex as this guy who works so hard to get daddy's approval and did everything he could to be where he's at and then in comes this alien figure and he's just worshipped and is perfect the one person he can't look down on He has to do everything in his power to be able to look down on and to spite him.
Starting point is 00:10:49 Yeah, like Superman is constantly looking up, and then where they frame Lex, he's constantly looking down at everyone. And, you know, there's teases in the trailer of, like, other characters in here, like Guy Gardner, and a hot girl, Mr. Terrific. Terrific. Mr. Terrific. I think Koi's theory is right about who, about James Gunn potentially, his secret Superman sequel would be about. about him because he has, there's this one sequence that's a oneer that involves Mr. Terrific and another character, I won't give it away, but it is like, wow, it's the most Guardians of the Galaxy feeling scene that it has because like this is the most that feels
Starting point is 00:11:30 like its own thing, but then there's plenty of times where it does feel like a James Gunn movie. And that's where I think sometimes some of the skepticism or some of that one to two percent might have been going a little too much with some of its humor. Sometimes I think the humor was like, don't even wrong, this movie is actually like freaking hilarious. The movie's really, but it's not a, I wouldn't call it a comedy. While there's some truly funny scenes in here, and the comedy is constantly rooted within the characters,
Starting point is 00:11:58 sometimes though I do feel like, okay, maybe perhaps it was a little too much there. Yeah, but never, I will say, never too crude. Oh, definitely not. I think that's one thing people have to be reverent. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like it does represent. a, I guess you would say maybe maturing of James Gunn's sense of humor or at least a tempering of it for this environment.
Starting point is 00:12:19 I feel like, yeah, the tenor of the humor is appropriate and your results will vary in terms of, yeah, if you think there's a little too much or too little of it. Yeah. I think that's going to come in the form of crypto. Absolutely. What we're talking about as an animal lover and the row I was with, we loved crypto. Yeah. I love Steeler as well. I love crypto. I feel like crypto is this like hated on character from the marketing.
Starting point is 00:12:40 And maybe you'll hate him, maybe you won't. We're here to give our opinions. I loved crypto. He felt like a real dog. I loved the hard relationship that Superman has with him. And the boy and his dog. He's very... That dog is hard to train.
Starting point is 00:12:56 He's very important and very integral to the plot of this movie. He's an essential character. Even the justice gang, the guy Garner's a Mr. They're essential to this movie. They're not just cameo fodder. Everything here feels very... part of this world. Everything's constructed. Everything's mapped out. visually, at first, I won't lie. At first, there was this part of my brain that was like, okay, sometimes this is looking a little like CWE and how bright it is.
Starting point is 00:13:26 Sure. And there's a lot of like direct sunlight and like, you know, people standing in front of beautiful lens flares and stuff like that along with the color saturation. Boy, I'm so happy. This guy. I don't mean interrupt. I know you guys had a flow going, but. My review is everything in life's worth it. Coy's going to go transcend into Valhalla. But, you know, like the part of the visual experience of this movie is also the aura that it omits. And so I think, like, visually, there's a lot of stunning visuals in here. And while my favorite fight scene of Superman will still go to the Man of Steel fight scene with Henry Cavill. I don't feel like there's a fight that tops that.
Starting point is 00:14:08 but as a movie, as an experience, as an emotional connection, as a catharsis, I think this one just easily takes the cake even more than the Superman Christopher Reeve. I know that might sound sacrilegious to some people. This just just hits me a lot more. Let them fight, yeah. Because like, even though I'm saying that, I loved a lot of the action in this movie. I think the action is actually pretty freaking cool. And the flight, I think, especially looks incredible.
Starting point is 00:14:36 And I think, yeah, like. Especially with the emotion behind it. Yeah, 100%. Like it literally is soaring and there is this like fascinating play of both triumph and desperation at different times in the aerial sequences in particular. Like yeah, some of the fist fighting, some of the actual combat might not be like the top tier of a Superman on screen. But I did think, yeah, the flying was really transportive and beautiful.
Starting point is 00:15:00 And it does feel like James Gunn, especially as of Guardians 3 and now this has locked in on his own unique way of shooting these things, which is very reliable. on like these wide angle lenses to really make it feel like you are in the room with everything. And even though you know that shots are being stitched together with effects and stuff like that, it looks really, really convincing and really visceral. It really brings the emotion out of everything. Oh, man, there's an energy and a fervor all over this screen. There's commentary on lies in the media and media manipulation,
Starting point is 00:15:32 which I thought, I was like, what a great way to do modern Superman while having a retro vibe. Exactly. And manipulation of global conflicts. And dealing with social media. I was like, oh shit, this is like, this is not sometimes something like that can feel like forced, but it's such a part of the movie,
Starting point is 00:15:52 nor does it overshadow the movie, but it is a part of the, it's a puzzle piece of the movie that does flesh out the experience in a way that I was like, oh damn, that's actually pretty clever how they, how you see how it affects people and affects Superman. Yeah, it doesn't feel like it's taking breaks to make
Starting point is 00:16:07 concessions to our time and place it feels like it is a time and place that is near in the not too distant future extrapolated off of what we experience now in the world, in the media, etc. Yeah, and I also think too that James Gunn has amped his direction
Starting point is 00:16:23 up because there's not many there's some soundtracks in here but it's mainly original score. It's not a big needle drop movie. Yeah, there's some prominent songs here or there but yeah, they're even tied into the characters. And a lot of the time James Gunn seems like he can similar Edgar Wright will construct a scene or a script even around a soundtrack and use that
Starting point is 00:16:43 for a lot of the movie, but this time that wasn't the case. And so it doesn't, that's what I mean by. It doesn't feel like your typical James Gunn movie at all. There are more scenes than I expected with just dialogue. Yeah. And no music. Yeah. That's, that's the thing about the takeaway here that I think is a good spot to end on
Starting point is 00:17:02 because I feel like we'll be talking about this movie for a long time, forever. is that when we walked out, I remember with Man of Steel, people were like, the action, visuals. And that's not what we were talking about. No one. Everyone just had kind of this energy of like, I'm so moved. How it made them feel. Yeah, how it left you feeling just so inspired and moved. Like all those things that you kind of associate with Superman that a lot of people don't really feel they get the connection to because he does feel larger than life.
Starting point is 00:17:34 and it doesn't feel attainable. This Superman has characteristics, qualities that feel like as a regular human being, I would want to be like that and attain it. That is Superman. This is the best Superman movie. That's what I'll say. Absolutely. It leaves you contemplating your humanity and wanting to make the best of that.
Starting point is 00:17:54 And I feel like that's what Superman's for. And I cannot wait to see this the second time, a third time, and beyond, and see it as big as possible. Yeah, we didn't even. Tremendous. We didn't even watch an IMAX, and I got I got IMAX tickets. Can't wait to watch it, man. Thank you guys for being here.
Starting point is 00:18:10 Please leave a like on this video. Keep a lookout for, I want to talk about this movie some more. Thank you for being here. Thanks, John. Yeah.
