Oh, God, what is her name?
Oh, crap.
I forgot her name.
I was like,
gotta be the pink one.
I know she's a very controversial character in the universe.
Rose.
Rose Tico.
No, Rose is the last name.
I did not know that it was Keanu Reeves.
Really?
I am not joking.
Oh, my God.
The second it came up, not right now, but before.
Or it said Kiana Reeves, and I was like, what in the actual?
You really couldn't tell.
No joke.
I guess she didn't understand my intro.
Amy Rose.
Amy Rose.
Amy Rose.
Is that her name?
Maybe.
We were getting into the, like, outer expanses of my random access sonic knowledge.
That's why they were making all the John Wick references.
And the Matrix and Speed and.
Oh, my God.
That's the best part of the reason.
It's really, it's, um, just cut me out of this, huh?
Just pretend like I wasn't here.
Well, at least you didn't say during the reaction.
Who's the voice of shadow?
I can't tell.
I mean, I could have.
I don't care.
They know that I don't, I don't know things.
I love with the whole movie.
I'm just here.
And you're like, I didn't realize that was Keanu Reeves.
Didn't know it.
Didn't know it.
That's good, though.
You get to be even more surprised because you got to judge the performance.
And be shot all over.
these guys hey like a meteor crash oh oh is that shadows that's cool it's like a second
chance hey don't don't do you survive good call Greg that's how he arrived to
earth and now this is right second second life that's got the the venom origin story
All right. Let's talk about it.
Well, ladies and gentlemen, we just watched Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
Tara.
Yeah.
I would love to hear your thoughts first.
I love the line the most when they are sitting on the moon and they say, when the star is gone, the light still shines.
Is that the line?
Something like that.
Because I really like how this touches on waves of grief.
And that's how they basically come to.
together which is like this is an animated movie you wouldn't think that they would go that way
in a plot but i really like that they did and that that is the thing that they can connect on is
loss because i truly think that that is what builds really really great friendships and i think
they highlighted this that they were able to uh see each other through each other's like shoes
by being like oh they both have experienced loss in great ways um and
And obviously, I love all the callbacks.
I complain about films that don't put callbacks in it.
They always do a great job in these films.
And, I mean, I had a good time.
Special effects were...
Keanu Reeves was in it, and I didn't know it.
What?
Just get off my back, okay?
I didn't know it.
And I love him.
Y'all know I'm obsessed with John Wick and Keanu Reeves,
so I'm glad that he was in this.
And I really couldn't tell.
You guys know that, I mean, I could have seen John Wick yesterday, seen this today, still wouldn't have known.
It's Keanu Reeves.
Welcome to my life.
Moving on.
It's different when you can't see someone's face.
It's different.
No matter how distinct to the voice.
It's different.
That's it.
That's what I got to say.
That's fair.
Andrew, my friend.
You know, I was really tired before this, but now I'm feeling a beat.
I have so much energy.
I feel like I could run through a race.
it's the hedgehog energy
in me but uh yeah
that race Andrew
you know what I'm back
I love the first two films
can I interrupt
when do you think of these
I just thought
because it's very consistent
intro review and I'm like when
when is it wasn't
something where Tara's talking
literally
I'm going to say this when Terry
literally in that moment I just saw
of that but uh I
I love the first two films but I think I
like i love this one the most um i i want to give it up for a keanu reeves i really enjoyed his
performance i think he did a good job of yeah i think he did a good job just um just bringing
like really bringing to life this character that was so complex and you know just had such a
tragic past and he brought such raw emotion to the character um you know this film had a very
frenetic pace and got right into the plot which i appreciate it i mean you know with these
films you know i understand why they have no sorry i understand why they have to have frenetic
pacing um which i don't mind um having said that one thing that did just a little bit um i would
have liked to get a little more in is even more so on the backstory with uh with shadow because
like i loved all that stuff i just would like even a little bit more and with uh gerald robotnick
i i know they probably gave us uh enough but i still would have liked a little bit more i just
thought that stuff was so effective just added a lot more emotional weight
in depth to Shadow's character, but I get why...
Are you saying that if it
slightly takes down
a point or something because we didn't
get it, or did you just like it so much that you wanted more?
I liked it so much that I wanted it more.
I wouldn't say it. Yeah, thank you. Thank you.
Clarifying the points.
Let's give it for clarifying points.
The clarity of communication.
The design on Shadow,
fantastic. The way he moves is just
incredible and just
ups the stakes for the rest of the film with our character.
Like, even with the three of, you know, Team Sonic or Team Knuckles, or rather, team,
like, you really feel like they have no shot at all against Shadow.
But, yeah, and then also, too, I like the themes about the film with revenge and family,
and I thought it was done in a very harmonious and mature way.
And, again, like, with how Sonic reacts to Tom's possible demise, I mean, I figured, I think,
as all of you, that he didn't die, although you could have made an argument that he could have
with what Shadda did him. But still, it was a very, you know, it was a pretty, you know, the reaction
that Sonic gives is, like, understandable and, like, how he becomes, because at the end of the day,
that is his father, his surrogate father, rather. So it's, you know, a reaction, like, you know,
grief and revenge, like, can take a hold of us and we can lose herself in that. So I thought
it was a good message, like, you know, not losing yourself in that and, you know, relying on your team.
And, yeah, I thought that was all, like, really deep and wonderful stuff. Like, in a film,
with Sonic.
So I like that stuff.
Obviously, the action's going to, you know,
keep you really entertained,
but that's the stuff that I was gravitating
towards the most,
the character stuff and the stuff with Maria and Shadow
and even robotic, too.
Like, I understood his motivation
and his revenge and all that.
But, yeah.
That's nice.
It's lovely.
Good job, Andrew.
Killing the game, Andrew.
Well done.
Thank you.
Thank you.
John.
Yes.
I'm going to go.
You should do this.
Please.
We go left all the way around.
Yeah.
No, I had a real good time watching this.
And I would agree.
Like, it's nice when you can tell something is working when it's like not, you know, this isn't a movie about just watching Shadow and, and, oh, God, I'm blanking now.
Maria and Maria sharing, you know, tender moments.
But, like, when you're sitting there going, I would watch a movie just about this.
Like, that means something is working there.
And I really appreciated that, yeah, like, this is really breezy.
and in some ways it has less, to my recollection,
just like time spent hanging with some of the more grounded character
and the more human characters and stuff like that.
Certainly Tom is not as prominent in this movie
as in the previous ones, but yeah, I thought for as much as this was moving
and this was on the plot, they managed to still bring,
yeah, a lot of surprising, accessible but nuanced, you know, character beats.
Yeah, like this is something that's still kid accessible
that isn't going too dark and bleak or heavy,
but does confront the sort of nature, nurture debate of,
yeah, like what happens when you suffer these losses
at such a young age, and then you're either transported to a place
where it's possible for you to find love,
or you're just put into a pressure cooker
where your anguish is just, you know, calcified and, you know, amplified.
And, yeah, like, this managed to hit in ways that go beyond just, like, the fun.
Not that the other Sonic movies don't have moments of drama.
But, yeah, I feel like they have a nice pitch.
Like, something like this could easily go wrong.
And two, for as much as this is, you know, kind of straight to the mission, you know,
and it's moving real fast, and there's a lot of stuff happening.
I feel like it is appropriate to kind of drift further and further toward your mostly animated.
Like, a couple times, I think you mentioned at some point during the movie,
and you referred to this, as of this review, as an animated movie.
does feel like an animated movie, even though half of it is, like, captured with live
actors and stuff.
And so, like, coming from a video game, coming from a cartoon, coming from all those
things, it feels like they found a very natural way of still honoring, you know, their
human characters, whilst also, like, really bringing the focus over to the video game
characters and lore in a way that doesn't feel unnatural, doesn't feel like anything is
being slighted.
You can note the changes, but I'm okay with the changes, because, you know, that's part of
how you grow and evolve something like this.
So, yeah, this moved, you know, with a whip crack.
I would be curious to kind of take it in again
because it feels like I sprinted through this movie in some ways.
Although in the least, you know, negative way I could echo a sentiment like that, you know.
So, yeah, I had a good time.
I had a real good time.
And, you know, Keanu, Keanu is great.
Love him.
I think this really played to Keanu Reeves' strengths,
and it was really nice to hear him in a role like this where, yeah,
it's obviously not the legitimately heaviest dramatic thing in the world but i thought he
managed to bring some pathos in the performance that was real lovely and merited the casting
beyond a stunt you know yeah i think in live action less dialogue for keanu the better
yeah unless it's a comedy role sure and animated give him all the lines
tends to work i feel like he talked way more here than he did in like the john wickman
movies probably
all than all four of them
yeah he got a lot of dialogue to do
um yeah i thought he was an absolute
blessing to have in this franchise
you know you got some heavy hitters here
idris elba and kiana reaves come on now that's awesome
and the original voice
actress who played tales
who played who tales oh yeah yeah yeah the only
the only ogee voice actor
i think colin who made the yeah o'shaughnessy
yeah i like uh tales a lot here like solidifying
the role.
I think in the second movie,
Tails got probably more screen time.
But I actually think the usage of Tales was stronger here.
And yeah,
I think it's just as like the team unit was made for a better dynamic.
And yeah,
I think this movie really,
it's a very self-aware film at the same time.
You know,
like every time they touch on a theme,
they even have like a character like Robotnik
to call out what the theme is.
You know, like Tara was talking at the beginning of this, about grieving over loss.
And then, you know, you have, you have Robotic at one point talking about,
I think you flat out just says trauma bonding right there, just like directly call it out.
And a lot of the themes of the movie, you know, as much as the movie says, it's about, you know, following your heart.
I think that kind of idea or philosophy can perhaps become a little bit skewed when you think about it.
You know, it's like, I feel like listening to your heart is a great indicator.
but I don't think you have to be obedient to your heart because sometimes if you do that
sometimes your feelings become because feelings at the end of the day are a form of thought
and I'm getting really like deep in the woods here but feelings are ultimately a form of thought
right and I guess what this movie is actually saying more is listen to your conscience right
listen to the good conscience side because your conscience tells you something bad something good
and listen to the good that is naturally within you and I loved that so much because
you're doing a story where Shadow is the shadow of Sonic the Hedgehog.
He is representing the darker side of him.
But again, going back to conscience,
it's a different tale when you have Gerald and Ivo Robotic.
And I thought Jim Carrey here was excellent.
This is my favorite version of him as Robotic.
It's weird because I've always been like hyper aware I'm looking at Jim Carrey.
And for some reason, this was the one time I'm like,
I'm really seeing the character for the first time.
And a lot of people would disagree with me on that.
People have always adored what he's done as Robotnik.
And I've always liked him as Robotnik,
but I've never quite loved him to the degree that I've heard everyone else say they loved him as.
I feel like they tempered him here.
I think he had an I think he knew because he was playing two characters.
He knew that he had to temperate a tad bit.
But you also do humanize him more here.
You do get to the core of his feelings.
and like, oh, you see that a lot of what he does is rooted in the fact of no human connection.
It's a strong gust of wind here.
Good time to keep the time to keep the moment.
Also, there was a lot of depth of the relationship between him and Agent Stone, too.
Well, yeah, you know, that's what I mean.
They acknowledge that.
They're finding out the deepness that the movies have hinted at.
And now you're really exploring it to the point where you have your main villain, Robotnick, from this franchise, end up making the good.
sacrifice choice by the end and I felt I felt that one and I bought it I wasn't here going like
what are you doing a robotnik like it actually it actually elevated it and I think the way he plays
off of himself like that's not really an easy task right like you got to and you got to be like very
much you got to be so in the scene and Jim Carrey's also known to improvise and do his own thing
when it comes to delivery then I'm like how did you have to stay on this on the page more this time
because of the fact that you're playing
two different kids and maybe that affects the performance
it feels like it yeah because he can't
you can't really mess around as much in terms
of improv or also just having to
it's just a shit show of a time in the editing room
with having to like with two characters
if he's just editing if he's just improvising
like crazy I mean that was an experience
I had with the first two movies was like I
certainly enjoyed watching Jim Carrey
play but also I'm like
he's he's doing a lot of the Jim Carrey
isms I am used to
is here. It felt more assimilated into
a character. Plus, what
we know of his journey up till now, it felt like it
was all, you know, encompassing that
emotionally speaking.
You know, from the vibe we meet him on in this movie
kind of washed up and, you know,
out of his element.
What I think they probably
had is a really good B-Team. Like, he goes
through both sides of his scene, and B-Team
has to come in and recreate
exactly how he does those lines and hopefully
his mannerisms. And if he can act
off of that, which is probably why we got
really good performance because you can either have a crappy team or a pretty good one that's like
decent actors that's what i think happened behind the scenes of those yeah because at first you know
you're aware like oh it's jim carrie playing two characters but you kind of move past that like
really fast at least for me yeah just saw two different characters on screen it's game reminds me
of like the mike meyers days of the awesome powers movies but you're not aware like you're
watching two different performers or or edie murphy in the i've never seen those movies but the
Professor Vett.
And Tyler Perry.
So, yeah, that side.
And, of course, like, the action was top-notch.
They took advantage of the fact that they are embracing more of its animated medium.
Like, what John was saying, how the first, they, like, there's, the human is robotic, pretty much, right?
And then, like, the times you check in with gun.
But in terms of following human protagonists surround, there's not really that element in this movie nowhere near.
prevailing. And the more
the franchise goes on, bless you. The more of the
franchise goes on, the less humans
you get involved. It was to the
point where I started wondering, like, is
some of these guys like, is there a
contract here where they have to show?
You know what I mean? I think it would just be
like, people would notice and be like, oh,
why didn't they get to come back? Like, even for one
scene. So like, because, you know, you get
a Shamar Moore and, you know,
Rachel
back, you know, for like that one
little, yeah, Rachel and Randall handle.
for that one sequence, you know.
Yeah, and I thought
the movie is a lot of fun.
I do think, though,
that perhaps it could have started
off with a little bit more.
I think every time we cut the shadow,
I thought the opening with Shadow was great,
but I think perhaps a little...
Actually, I don't know, I'm of two minds about it.
There's a part of me that is like,
okay, it probably could have benefited
and made the impact land stronger
of Sonic's lesson and arc
if the movie wasn't like just
bam right out of the gate,
you know and it's like there's there's elements of pacing because it i wasn't quite i really felt
like in the first two movies i really resonated and was hit in the fields a lot by the lesson
sonic learned um but this really felt like this was more shadows movie uh at the end of the day
like you should have pardon me just like you should just call shadow the hedgehog there was a game
called shadow hedgehog because i mean i imagine he's going to get a spin off and that's what they're
building into and right so he deserved so yeah i do
think that like sona kind of just went through the beats that you sort of see coming um and
because he's main character but uh yeah for the ones that you really feel for is shadow right a lot
of that that emotion it goes through that uh but no it is i thought this is like a really fun time
and i think like they really care to service the fans like the way they do the action shots
embracing the animation side you allow for a lot more of these awesome oneers um that end in
these like superhero poses that are great to know and shadow was like
And Shadow was a little scary.
You know, like, if you put him in the room to fight, you're like, oh, my God, this guy's going to, like, whoop everyone's ass.
Yeah.
Who's, is it, Amy Rose?
I've, I've seen so many breakdowns of Sonic over the years.
Let me see.
I've never actually beaten a game from beginning to end.
I've just seen so many countless breakdowns that I'm just, like, so sometimes a character pops out.
Like, I was aware of Shadow's background because of that.
I'm like, oh, yeah, Maria and everything.
You got to play the right game.
It is, Amy Rose.
It was slowly coming to my.
brain you got to play the right games too because going to certain games to get the research you'll
have a lot of fun but be like oh i didn't pick up that much lore because that was too busy collecting
and a lot of the breakdowns are like here's what's going to happen or here's what we think what character
might appear so you hear enough of it eventually sort of some of that shit just sticks in your brain
are you excited there's finally going to be a girl one tara yes i am excited but i also wanted to
say that i think like a big part of this movie is like the line that they say don't let pain
take over like you or and as you can see it's like grand poppy he's the one that he signara and all the
rest of them had to hold back i mean especially sonic and shadow right we sell them a hold back from
their pain from doing something massively destructive and then they come together and the one that
does let his pain take over in in regards to what happened before because grief can eat away at you
And if you don't just handle, just go with the flow, go with the waves of it, it can take over.
And we see that with him.
And I think it's sort of a dark representation of what that pain, if you let it take over, can give you.
But I also think the light at the end of the tunnel is what they're showing us, how they both overcame it and came together.
And then basically save the world, which was cool.
And even the idea of having like his grandson back.
didn't like allow him to get over that pain he's like all my family members are dead to me like
ever since maria's dead so he never quite got over that and i mean revenge is uh is a fickle matter
like sometimes they'll just take you consume you and take you over and he never learned to assimilate
his shadow like i do find it fun and interesting that like the namesake of shadow is well represented
here in like the jungian context of like your shadow self you must confront you must learn to
embrace and assimilate it into your whole self
otherwise it's going to lead you down a dark
path that is going to be destructive for everybody
and both Shadow and Sonic
even though Shadow is a
reflection in ways of Sonic
they both have to learn to do
a version of that even Ivo has to do
a version of that and the only one who doesn't
is Gerald and he needs the
the wicked end well it also shows
you the power and proper mentorship
because Shadow was constantly being
provoked and propelled by
Gerald right whereas
like Sonic has a tom anyway you got
so you got facts I know you can say yeah
trying to rush us to stop talking
yeah just so you can talk it's only
midnight you guys can keep going a couple more hours but
just really quick this is a hundred and twenty two million
budget film uh quick guess is
what do you guys think this film made worldwide
455 million
John what 600 million
Tara oh my god
I'm just going to say
390 maybe a little under
422
oh shit oh my god
I really are
All right, really quick, Rotten Tomatoes, critics and audience go.
Critics, I'm going to go 78% in audience.
I'm going to go in 95.
Don't forget what you said, John.
87% critics and 98% audience.
Tara?
Critics, 76% audience 89.
Critics 88.
John's close.
Audience 95, Greg.
Wow.
On the money.
Damn.
Bravo.
John, you were right on the money
with the critics.
We were 1% off.
All right.
After their initial race,
Harry, you can step it up.
It's because he's a white guy.
All movies are for me.
You got to be the Amy Rose of the group.
You got to woke us up.
After their initial race,
Knuckles and Tails are there waiting
for Sonic tapping their feet with their hands on their hips.
This is the same animation in the games
if you leave your character standing for too long.
Yes.
That's fun.
According to director, Jeff Howler, Keanu Reeves, did research on Shadow the Hedgehog
because he wanted to create a faithful version of the character.
I love Cary so much.
The sequence of Dr. Robotna getting his head shaved happened on set, as Jim Carrey stated.
It took a year and a half for him to grow out his hair and had actor Lee Madge...
Wow, really?
Agent Stone cut his hair.
Wow.
Hell yeah, that did look authentic.
He is so freaking method.
Yeah.
The filmmakers, well, yeah, you got to call him.
call Mandy Kaufman on set so yeah the filmmakers of the you know that right I got to see
rocket the filmmakers of the filmmaker man on the moon man on the moon the filmmakers of the prior
movies have mentioned playing both Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog solo game for
inspiration the film is also inspired by narrative elements from the Saturday morning animated
television series Sonic the Hedgehog which came out in 1993 sure enough except not Jaliel
White uh yeah I'll go to the spoilers here because I know everyone probably wants to get at it
my god there are so many i got a few more hours it's one a m hey craig's like this is my awake time
i think it's true all right uh spoilers uh we already said that oh the film features the iconic
main theme for sonic adventure two live and learn we you guys already mentioned that at the end
of the race with tales and sonic sonic sonic makes a sign spin as he runs past this is similar to the
spinning signs in the game at the end of each level i pointed that out giving myself credit thank you
Amy Rose was originally planned to be in the film itself
instead of just a tease in the mid-credit scene.
She was cut because they didn't have the runtime
to introduce her in the same movie as Shadow
and everything in the story entails without sidelining her.
Well, I'm glad they did that
because it would have been like,
why do we have two new characters and why is she barely in it?
So I think that was the right choice.
In the post-credit scene, last one.
In the post-credit scene, Sonic accidentally ends up in New York
where he comes across metal Sonic
and Amy Rose in Sonic Prime,
Sonic accidentally ends up in New York,
an obvious riff on New York,
where he meets Rusty Rose,
a robotic-sized Amy
who serves a similar function to Metal Sonic
and later Chaos Sonic, a much
more obnoxious Metal Sonic analog.
Oh, cool. Great, awesome stuff.
Andrew, I appreciate that.
Well done, Andrew. You did it really good, Andrew.
You did it, articulate in those facts.
What do you guys think about Sonic the Hedge,
Talk 3. Are you going to cry?
Leave your thoughts down below.
Tara, thank you for being here.
All right, guys.
See you soon.
Josh Asano.
Is that a little doctor in his?
I was wondering because I think we've, I think it's actually a little guy with a, like a karate
ghee and a black belt now.
Like we, I thought it was Dr. Who.
Oh, it's definitely a guy with a black belt.
I thought it was mass.
Oh, okay.
But no, it's, what if David Tenant did Kung Fu?
He would be Josh.
he might be yeah i mean it's interesting looking at this photo you josh and you specifically chose this guy
with a black belt are you into martial arts you know i did martial arts for a while 10 years john how long
you do you do martial arts for well probably not as long as you so maybe like six or seven
i was there for many years before you shot i was already a black belt by the time you got there yeah
yeah maybe four years well because we were still a junior high right i started i started i
started in you were you were you were we were garden damn okay yeah yeah so I didn't even
realize it was that early uh okay sure so it's probably less time that's why I
still like do some kicks and pipe even though it's been like 20 years I could
but anyway I never got to red I got to green two that's fascinating so and I skipped
yellow but it makes me wonder if Josh if he were to fight us in our prime yeah to both of us
versus one of you if we I wonder if I could have looked his ass I think you you
You could have whooped his ass.
What a whoop Josh.
You would have.
Josh.
Oh, I see what you did.
Damn.
I mess you up, man.
Shit, I'd do it today.
Oh.
Were you in a wheelchair?
I'd do it faster.
Yeah.
I mean, that just makes your job easier.
That's what I'm talking about.
Drop kick you.
Yeah.
I mean, Josh, get out here, all right?
The gauntlet has been thrown.
And now if you deny, you are, like, legally a coward.
So you need to defend your honor.
Yeah.
You know, this is what you asked for when you signed up to be a member.
of the reject the super sexy reject nation you got to find the biggest baddest guy in the room
and apparently that's you that's you josh looking forward to the battle
