Join Tara Erickson & Andrew Gordon as they plunge deeper into the mysterious happenings in Hawkins, Indiana, on Netflix’s hit sci-fi horror series Stranger Things. In Chapter Five: “The Flea and the Acrobat,” Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer, Yes, God, Yes) and Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton, Locke & Key) stake out the secret government lab at Hawkins Lab, leading to a tense break-in and their chilling glimpse of the Upside Down through a locked door. Meanwhile, Will’s friends and Eleven piece together clues at the Wheeler basement, culminating in Eleven’s VCR vision that pinpoints Will’s alternate-world prison. Chapter Six: “The Monster” reunites the core group in a desperate rescue plan, with Eleven leading them through dark tunnels beneath the lab in a pulse-pounding search for Will. Hopper and Joyce’s parallel investigations converge in a dramatic showdown at the lab’s elevator shaft, while Mike’s team races against time to open a portal to the Upside Down. Don’t miss the iconic scene where Hopper confronts the lab guards on the stairwell—guns blazing—and Eleven’s triumphant battle with the Demogorgon that cements her place as Hawkins’ most unlikely hero. Starting point is 00:00:00 Thank you to Shopify's and prize picks. More on them in just a bit. Should we just get to it? I say we just get right to it. I am as well. Let's go. All righty. Stranger Juice.
Starting point is 00:00:20 All right. Thank you to Prepper for helping edit down these highlights. If you want to pause it so it doesn't go to the next one, we appreciate you. Also, Eric, Nerd Chronic helps out too. Thank you, Eric. Holy freaking Tamale. That just, like, flew by.
Starting point is 00:00:38 Yeah, the pacing is so good. It's so freaking good. It just, like, that's, this is just such a good show because from the pilot, every single episode feels like it's like that. Like, to me, it just feels like it goes by. Absolutely. And it's such, it's such a good. They always leave us on a freaking cliffhanger, dude, with the white vans. Coming out, like you said, first time that Papa's out looking for her now.
Starting point is 00:01:05 And we see her just turn around at that door and go inside. And you're like, oh, like, I, it's, oh, my God. I can't. Okay, so how, how are you feeling? I'm feeling like if you are listening on Apple or Spotify, you give us five-star ratings. Please, otherwise 11 will come after you. This show is so damn good. I'm just, again, just so excited to see.
Starting point is 00:01:28 I've been obviously I would never do it I've been so tempted a few times in the interim while we're waiting to go episode I'm like I want to keep watching but obviously I'm saving all my first time reactions of course but that's how much I love it I don't want to stop it it really is I really love
Starting point is 00:01:45 how they're taking their time with everything nothing feels rushed and also to add to what you just said as well the pacing is so damn good you never ever whether we got slow burn scenes or quick or quick scenes you never ever feel the time it always goes by so quickly and i think uh one of the strengths of this show as well is the way they are unpealing things nice and easy as well like for instance
Starting point is 00:02:13 when it comes to 11 and the origins of the monster i would have had no idea that she had anything to do with opening the gate and that's how the monster got into here like and but they set it up that way the last couple episodes were like you could start here hearing the creaks of the monster when she was starting to go into the i guess the russian that she was into the last episode yeah in episode five i believe it was so they do really a good job with foreshadowing things and even like just an instance too with like foreshadowing and they talked about him shooting the rabbit with thumper and spoilers if you haven't seen bambi and like then you see the deer it's like there's always just these little foreshadowing moments so i do think the show
Starting point is 00:02:52 does a really good job with stuff like that steve is such a piece of crap Yeah. And, like, you mentioned, like, this is such a, you know what? He's not the nicest guy. But this is a really charming scene. Like, right away, even when, as we were reacting, like, yeah, in my head, I'm like, it's charming. But he's being extremely emotionally manipulative just because of everything we've seen prior to this.
Starting point is 00:03:15 Right. Like, I'm not buying. And I kept saying I'm not buying his bullshit. Right. And again, great acting by him. He's a good actor. And the character is a good actor, too, because he just wants to get late. he doesn't give a crap about Nancy.
Starting point is 00:03:30 Yeah. And, you know, again, I thought the title of this episode is so fascinating. It's called The Monster. And it can be segued into so many subtext, rather, into so many different ways. Obviously, the monster, you know, that we've been trying to uncover here. This whole thing, I think Steve's a monster. Yeah. I mean, like, that was a very private thing that him and Nancy did.
Starting point is 00:03:52 And I get it. He feels, even though he's a piece of crap in his own right. And I get that he feels hurt She like they thought like they were Finally coming to a more common ground And when he invited her to the movie or whatever She said no I got to deal with the whole Right funeral thing
Starting point is 00:04:08 Even though he didn't know the whole story But to jump to a conclusion like that without talking to her And to and then write that hurtful thing And then actually release something that was done in the That you guys did in the privacy of just the two of you He didn't release anything I know but yeah I know but He just wrote it on the thing
Starting point is 00:04:25 I understand, but knowing his vindictiveness, I wouldn't be surprised if someone like him would release him with the two friends that he has. Well, they just wouldn't have anything to show because Nancy and Jonathan didn't do anything. No, no, no. I'm saying that Nancy and Steve, didn't they film or no? No.
Starting point is 00:04:43 I thought they did film. They filmed them together? See, this is why, like, sometimes I don't like waiting in between weeks. I thought they filmed something when they were, when they were in the privacy, Oh, did they? I'm probably wrong. You were probably right.
Starting point is 00:04:59 They probably didn't. I don't think so. For some reason, I did, but you're right, that character who drove by them, that extra set of, looking forward to your movie, it was just a comment. I think it was just a comment of the thing. You're right. You're right. I think I just, I think I took that to literally then.
Starting point is 00:05:14 And again, it's been a long time since we watched the episode where they were, I think it was episode two or whatever it was. It's been a while since we watched that. So I didn't remember if they were actually recording doing the thing or not. No, I think he just saw her with Jonathan through the window and then was like pissed and started graffiti. Yeah, no, no, no, that I do know. And I do know Jonathan took some pictures too and he was outside the pool and all that. Right.
Starting point is 00:05:37 Yeah, either way, he's a very manipulative human being. And I like the contrast between him and Jonathan. Like, Jonathan, again, it's kind of judging the book by its cover. You know, you see him and you don't really know who he is because he's got this outer shell and you think, this is just a weird do. And Steve, he's like this cool hip guy. really rich, yeah, very popular guy. He's the guy I want to hang out with. It's like, no, he's a selfish piece of shit.
Starting point is 00:06:02 And Jonathan's a very selfless human being like, that's the guy you'd want to, you know, be friends with. Yeah, for sure. So I think like the whole message and theme there with these two characters is don't judge a book by its cover. Really good to know someone. Right. Try to see what else I have to say. Oh, I really, really, really like, I mean, obviously the chemistry between all the characters. is fantastic.
Starting point is 00:06:26 I really, really am starting to dig the chemistry as well between Jonathan and Nancy. I think, again, they're taking their time with that
Starting point is 00:06:33 because obviously the first few episodes, we got more scenes between Nancy and jerk off Steve, but now we're getting to see more scenes and again, that relationship really develop
Starting point is 00:06:44 and I'm just really starting to get emotionally attached to those two as well. Yeah. And I really love that moment in the last episode where kind of had their first like confrontational
Starting point is 00:06:54 a little argument where she was like, you know, you are really a weird dude. And then he, like, really told her off. Yeah, it's a good. Yeah, I just, but I'm like, no one's ever spoken to her like that. Because she's like this, again, she's also a ditsy popular girl too, gets what she wants. And he told her off. Well, actually, she's really smart, but she is a popular girl.
Starting point is 00:07:13 Yeah, she's trying to be something like that she's not is what I'm trying to, like, to fit in rather. She's playing it off. Yeah, exactly. It's like, dude, just be who you are. You know what I mean? And I really, I appreciate that. seen so much. You know what I mean? You don't have to hide behind a facade. Yeah. And I think that was a great message as to the audience in general. And also, I just thought that was a great moment.
Starting point is 00:07:33 I think she, in the end, like, she really respected that someone's never had the cahoots to, or the Cajunas, rather, to speak to her like that. And actually, there was a lot of validation and truth behind what he was saying. Yeah. So I thought that was a great, I think it was a very pivotal moment in their relationship. That's going to, you know, go very far ways. I got more to say, but what do you think of the two episodes just in general? Yeah, yeah. I mean, they're amazing. I like, I really liked when they went shooting just because my brain's on Jonathan and Nancy that, you know, she shares about her mom and her dad. You never, she's like, oh, my mom, I don't think my parents ever liked each other. And it's a very sort of like 80s-esque thing, which I think
Starting point is 00:08:21 is kind of funny. And then Jonathan throws that back in her face of basically saying, you know, and then you end up in a cul-de-sack with someone sort of like Steve, right? And I agree with you in that she's probably never been told the truth or it laid out that way. And he kind of did throw it back at her, which I don't mind because she was really digging into him. I think my favorite part about these last two episodes is obviously seeing Hopper and
Starting point is 00:08:51 Joyce finally come back together. When he's taking down all of the light bulbs, when we cut to that, that is where you're like, I think y'all are made for each other because now we see that they are fully on the same team and it is so much fun to now see them going out and they're interviewing Jane's mom, who we assume is 11's mom, but we find out so much more information because of the sister who says telekines. telekinetic. And they do those smash cuts to 11 actually using those types of powers. So the mom is obviously right and sort of in a coma and unable to help herself. But it's nice to see that
Starting point is 00:09:36 now Hopper and Joyce are now like on the road. They're going somewhere. And now Lucas is now very close to where Hopper was, right? He's now probably adding the piece. together. So we're each individually, we're all getting a lot closer because the fact that 11 saved Mike's life. He jumped off a cliff. She caught him and flew him back up. I mean, that's just, that's a whole thing. That obviously when they get to see Lucas and if Lucas is like, bro, this is this place. And if there's a way that 11 could communicate, that this is what I'm talking about, it's not safe, then we can get, then we can get Lucas and all of them back together, which is what I want to see, right? We want them to sort of combine
Starting point is 00:10:33 now that Lucas is following the compass, he's looking for the gate, we know he didn't want 11 around, but now they're going to have to be like, bro, these are the rules, and she saved my life, right? And maybe, wouldn't it be kind of fun? And if, if, if, you know, they had to teach L that the rules are that if she drew blood first and then she has to shake, I think that would be so fun. That would be adorable. That just came to my brain of like, because she threw Lucas, right? And I'm thinking, how do we get them back together?
Starting point is 00:11:08 How did we get Mike and L back together? That would be great if you're like, well, you, here's the rules. You drew first blooded that she has to shake his hand. I don't know if they'll do that. But I think that that would be so much fun to watch them teach her. These are the rules of life if you want to be in our friend group. I think that would be a lot of fun. And again, defending Tara, it's been a long time since she's reacted.
Starting point is 00:11:29 Or excuse me, since she's watched the show. So if she is correct, I don't want to. I'm not going to even read that. I hope I am. That would be great writing. I'm just saying, if Tara did really remember this, she wouldn't even say it. So I just want you guys to know that. Y'all, please.
Starting point is 00:11:44 I'm just, I just want to throw that out there. The one part that I. I a little bit did remember was AGOs in my brain. I was like, oh, I think I remember the AGO part with 11. But again, like he said, I would never ever go, oh, this thing, and I remember it. That's just, it's not our job to do it. But that does make sense. And I would like that.
Starting point is 00:12:06 That would be a very endearing moment. Wouldn't that be cool? Yeah, yeah, no, for sure. That would be great. Rejignation, when we started this company, there was no manual. throughout the years of figuring out how to edit, how to be on camera, and with this company expanding, we were like, now we want to figure out how to sell merch, handle orders, and do it all in a way that actually looked, well, legit. And if I'm being real, I wish we had Shopify on our side from day one.

Again, that's code rejects, $50 instantly after your first $5 lineup. Prize fix, run your game. I will say this too, just adding to what you are saying. I'm going to get into the Hopper and Joyce thing because I only have two more things I'd like to say. I'm going to get into Hopper and Joyce in one second. I will say in regards to Mike jumping off because he did make a comment earlier. earlier to Dustin. Dustin said, hey, look, the whole thing about Lucas, we kind of thought it was
Starting point is 00:15:19 a whole fear thing, you know, with 11. That's why he was like having such anxiety towards her and didn't want anything to do with her. And then after two, like being thrown by her, like, dude, I want nothing to do with this, this girl. But it had, there was a lot more, it was a lot deeper than that. Like, when you really peel off the layers and then, I love, I love, I love how honest Dustin is. Like, he doesn't hold back. I really, I really love it. I love all, again, he's one of my favorites, Dustin. I keep saying this. I love all these characters. I just, I just want to keep expressing how good all these characters. It's not easy. By the way, it's hard to make one character likeable,
Starting point is 00:15:51 but to make so many different characters likable, it's impressive. So in regards to Dustin, I think it was interesting when he said to Mike, hey, like, there's a reason why Lucas, like, is so jealous of this relationship. It's because you, you've been his best friend since the beginning of time or whatever since you guys were like I guess they're still really young but you know what I mean yeah and now this girl just come and I get it like I moved here in the fourth grade and we're still all really close friends but I know I I'm not like your best friend because you can only have one best friend like that's not true you're my best friend too I'm like this guy was willing to in my opinion I think he would have been gone from life if he would
Starting point is 00:16:30 if Elle wouldn't have intervened there because unless the camera made it was trick photography that looked like they were 100 200 300 feet up I don't know he would have been dead Yeah, I think he would have too. That's how I interpreted it. So like if someone's not really your best friend, I don't think you're going to jump in the water for them. I say, hey, just get rid of his baby teeth. That's fine. He doesn't need him anyways. But also too, I think that goes along to Dustin. His selfless, they're both so selfless like, hey, they're just baby teeth. I don't need him. That's fine. So I think that was a really pivotal and strong moment for, again, just showing how important they both really are to each other as well as like Lucas and Will and Elle, of course, as well. But that was such a. cool moment for Elle to catch him midair. I almost thought to, and I know I did say it well, I'm like, did I'll catch him? I either thought Elle caught him in my head or like that maybe, and I didn't say it. He didn't jump into the upside down world or something like that. But I didn't say that, but in my mind, I'm like, I'm probably El caught him, but I was wondering that. In regards to the Joyce and Hopper thing, again, I just, I really like that relationship.
Starting point is 00:17:34 Again, they resonate so much with each other just because of what, again, what I said in the review for episode four review what he had to go through in regards to sarah yeah and now obviously he's uncovered so much of the truth and finding the the bug yeah yeah and also too now peeling down the layers and finding out about with uh 11 and jane and all yeah with that so i think that's just again i really love that relationship i i keep saying this but i can't wait for all three teams to i know i keep saying i know i keep saying teams which they are or ensemble how about ensembles let's say that all three ensembles you got all the plots to combine the the mike the mike gang the joyce and hopper gang and the jonathan and nancy gang when they all form as one i can't wait it's gonna almost feel like the avengers kind of kind of like that epic yeah it really does feel like that but honestly one of my favorite scenes taro was when hopper said to her like it the body was fake every i believe you like that moment like it really gave me like laughing well i started clapping i was I was like, oh, my God, she knows.
Starting point is 00:18:40 I had goosebumps when I was watching that. Like, it wasn't just because, like, it was a great character moment. And also, like, I think Joyce felt vindicated and, like, I'm not crazy. My son is really alive. I'm not just hearing these noises. Right. But, like, it was a really, like, the acting from David Harbor was, like, really, I just, I loved it, too. Just from all the, like, because there's so much paranoia going on with these two characters
Starting point is 00:19:05 and what they're experiencing the last few episodes. So it was just really, really well. executed scene really well executed from an acting perspective as well so yeah every time we see um hopper and joyce together it's it's really grounded work it's it's very subtle and and very very good um i like that we we think that really it's it's because of joyce that we know that jane is missing because joyce pulls up a picture and she just goes that picture is not what my kid would draw right she just knows will her son you know it's it's that connection of like, no, he didn't draw that.
Starting point is 00:19:40 This is somebody else, which is now leading us to the fact that he met Jane. You know, he's like, there's a reason they got rid of her. Like, you know, he did indeed see her in the beginning. And now we kind of have to backtrack. I'm curious if the way that they're setting this up because Lucas is on his own in the tree, looking at the Hawkins Lab, if he will now realize that L is not the monster, that the monster is somehow in there or there's monsters within that,
Starting point is 00:20:15 like the people and the thing. I'm just really curious how they all come back together. I mean, is Luke is going to like break into the thing? You know, because he's looking at it. Yeah. And I'm like, so all right, so we're looking at it. Where do we go from here, right? What information can Lucas get out of just seeing this
Starting point is 00:20:35 besides like, I guess getting in? So I'm so excited to watch more. Agreed with you. There is one more thing. I just kind of wrote this down and I'm curious if you feel the same as me. I did feel there were some parallels as well as contrast with Hopper and Jonathan as Lonnie and Steve. Like Hopper and Jonathan have compassion and just they're so selfless and they're trying to
Starting point is 00:21:01 do the right thing. Whereas Lonnie and Steve are very manipulative and they're all about selfishness. and all for themselves. Totally. And it's like, it's interesting too because what's his name? Hopper is,
Starting point is 00:21:14 I feel like he's going to end up with Joyce. Again, I'm not going to read the comments anyways until we're done with the show. Oh, yeah, no, never. Yeah, even though I please don't put spoilers. And Jonathan is going after Nancy,
Starting point is 00:21:23 whereas Steve, again, going after Nancy, and then again with Lonnie going after Joyce. So, again, just the parallels are so much there, but also the contrast. I just kind of wrote that down and was thinking that. So I just, I don't know if you, felt the same way as too, but I, I just couldn't notice the parallels with Lonnie and, like, Lonnie is like the future Steve.
Starting point is 00:21:45 Yeah, absolutely. And then just, I guess, the less richer version. Jonathan could be the, and then Hopper is like the future Jonathan, just hopefully without, hopefully the less tragic version. But just in terms of, again, just the incredible qualities and also in regards to, what's his name, Steve and Lonnie, the negative qualities. So I just, again, I was just really seeing the parallel. and the contrast between the four characters.
Starting point is 00:22:10 Yeah, and it's nice that, you know, we had a breakaway of Joyce from Lonnie as around kind of the same time that Nancy has a breakaway from Steve. And she's now in a safer place with Jonathan and obviously Joyce is in a safer place with Hopper. And these two, like, couples per se are now, they have like the truth in their pocket
Starting point is 00:22:36 and they both fully believe each other. So it's like really, it's very exciting to see Jonathan and Nancy go shop for weapons together. How fun is that? That's just no words are needed. We're looking at to buy weapons. They set the stuff down. That is just, it's really, really fun writing. And then, of course, we see what Nancy, I'm sorry, what Joyce has needed the entire time is someone just to validate her feelings and her thoughts.
Starting point is 00:23:06 And the, the, when they have it sort of a point of view shot, actually it's not a point of view shot, there's a shot from the back seat. We're looking at Hopper, looking at Joyce. And he's just like, we're going to find him. Like, and he is, he, you believe him. And it just makes you feel for Joyce in that moment because you're like, finally there's someone on her side. That's not, that's not out to, to have her on her side for money or for other, um, things. things like Lonnie was right right um it's not nefarious reasons like he really just wants to help her and also too again it's going to be very like I said in the episode four it's going to be very cathartic and for him just because of what happened with his daughter and he just wants to do the right thing I agree I really agree he's a good he's a good human being where Lonnie is it's it's
Starting point is 00:23:57 like it was his son for crazy I just want the money he's like oh no no no emotionally manipulative like Steve we can send him to do whatever college we want didn't even know what college his own son wants to go to he's he's a piece of crap lonnie but he's emotionally manipulative so he tries to play it off he's got this facade like steve i tried to come off as a nice guy totally that's why i tried to make those parallels but again the contrast between the the selflessness of hopper and and jonathan and then the selfishness the selfishness of those two so it's just i i think that's it's brilliant writing that made me think of that like it's just incredible the parallels that that they really drive home with those characters in my opinion yeah yeah yeah
