This episode follows Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown – Enola Holmes, Godzilla vs. Kong) as she enters Dr. Brenner’s (Matthew Modine – Full Metal Jacket, The Dark Knight Rises) “Nina Project” lab in Nevada to regain her powers with the help of Dr. Owens (Paul Reiser – Aliens, Whiplash). Starting point is 00:01:48 This video is sponsored by MintMobil. More on them very soon. Three, two, one. five we're on the roll we just got done watching stranger things episode five good old time if you're at least anything to us on apple or spot five please give us five star rating do all the youtube things like comment subscribe ring the bell ring the bell um yeah so that you're notified when we drop other videos we're going to get right into our patreon special thanks to the fine folks over at prepper for reading down these highlights we appreciate
Starting point is 00:02:28 it. Yeah. Prepper used the best. They also edit my stuff on my channel. Go check that out if you haven't already. Oh, yeah. Also, I forgot to tell you guys. My podcast just dropped like last week when I had COVID.
Starting point is 00:02:40 It's called the RagePod. So if you can go listen to that on Apple or Spotify, that would really help us out. Leave the comment, rate it five stars. Yeah, it's a fun one. Go check it out. The Rage Pod. All right. Theo says, what did you guys think of Dr. Martin Brenner,
Starting point is 00:02:57 aka Papa coming back, do you think he's actually going to help 11 or does he have an ulterior motive? Also, what do you think about the way they incorporated Young 11 in the flashbacks? I personally love the cinematography and transitions in those. So, as you all know, as we were reacting in real time,
Starting point is 00:03:14 I thought at first it was like PTSD trauma visualization and I thought he wasn't really there, but I definitely, I love Matthew Modin. He's a phenomenal actor, so I'm glad that he's back on the show. It's so hard. And again, the writers do such an incredible job of always being unpredictable and throwing curveballs whenever they do. I think Owens has, like, he has 11's, you know, he doesn't have ulterior motives.
Starting point is 00:03:43 And he has her, you know, her, how am I trying to articulate this? Best interest at heart. Thank you. He has her best interest at heart. So when it comes to Dr. Brenner, I think it's a combination of the two. think he does want her to have her powers back and does care about her but he does it in his own way and i think he does have ulterior motives too so again i think there's a fine line there between the two again we shall see in regards to what you said about how the incorporation
Starting point is 00:04:17 of young eleven and the flashbacks and how they filmed it and the transitions i thought it was done incredibly i loved how they did it just a little nip pick i thought some of the this is just me because I have a very big pet peeve with, was it de-aging. Sometimes I think it looks like really good. Oh, no, I think that was a real, it was a real, uh, girl or boy. I don't think they de-aged it. Oh, they did. Okay. I thought it was. I think it was like a look-alike young kid. Oh, okay. I thought they were de-aging that was C. Well, you guys can let us know. Yeah, let us know because I didn't think the de-aging was fantastic. But having said that I was so emotionally pulled in and like feeling it that it wasn't like, uh, it didn't bother
Starting point is 00:04:57 me like a ton, just more the visual of it. But I love that what was happening in the scene. And like, again, how she was tapping into her trauma to try and get her powers back was very visceral and the emotional complexity of what was happening. But what about you? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:13 I think that Papa is obviously power hungry. We realize that in watching this whole entire series. So there's no doubt in my mind that there would be some sort of ulterior motive for him to get his like full power back especially like after surviving right he's got to be even more power hungry than ever but
Starting point is 00:05:35 there is a part that even when we're watching the flashback he's like he's like they think that you're weak because he knows what her button is to push her that far to get her to a place where she can use her powers which is nice to see so it's like he knows how to push her he may be pushing her a little too far, but we'll see. I'm not sure what power he would gain other than if 11 trusts him now and still calls him freaking Papa, right? That's a plus for him, but we'll see what happens to the end. I don't really know where his place is in the story except just to help 11. And with the young 11
Starting point is 00:06:15 stuff, I actually really did love the cinematography and the way they edit it, the cuts. They placed 11 at really the right framing in the camera. that she was probably sitting down so that when the little one, which I do think is like just another human who doesn't look exactly like Millie Bobby Brown,
Starting point is 00:06:35 but looks a lot like her. Yeah. And then they can interstitially like cut in between, which I loved. I thought it was great. Yeah, I did know that they used a younger actress to play that part, but I just, I thought they maybe CGI'd and DHed over the face. Maybe they did. That's what I thought.
Starting point is 00:06:53 But again, it was really good. Yeah. All right, from Jessica Houser, thank you for being a royal regic for asking the question. We appreciate it. The satanic panic was a period of intense fear and suspicion in the 1980s and early 1990s, characterized by widespread accusations of satanic ritual abuse, particularly of children, despite a lack of credible evidence. Belief in the existence of satanic cults led to investigations into seemingly innocuous symbols,
Starting point is 00:07:20 music like heavy metal and games like Dungeons and Dragons as evidence of satanic influence. Jason is obviously convinced Hellfire is a satanic cult. Do you see a way for him to let go of that and help the group or do you believe he will continue to incite fear and anger in the community all season? I love your connection of Gaston and Jason Tara, extremely accurate. I agree with that. Oh, that you love it.
Starting point is 00:07:45 Oh, do you want to start on this one? the satanic panic thing is like it's wild because it like what you're saying Jessica as you're saying is characterized by widespread accusations of satanic ritual abuse particularly of children which reminds me of like wigi boards and sure dungeons and dragons but I don't I feel like it what we didn't know in the 80s is what we didn't know right that like dungeons and dragons is a game although it's new and it seems spooky it's like things that you don't understand you're going to like think negatively of
Starting point is 00:08:21 so I feel like there is a way for him to sort of let it go but I don't think he will what I do think he'll continue to do is insight like fear and anger but here's what we did just get to see what I was thinking when when you know his friend goes up and
Starting point is 00:08:44 I'm like oh great Jason seeing it. It's not freaking Eddie. Eddie's in the freaking water. His friend is being ripped apart by sci-fi unknown. So we would hope that Jason is a good enough guy. We have seen the good side of him a little bit of it. And it's understandable his guest on side because he really just think a person had to have done that to Chrissy. So we'll have to see. But I feel
Starting point is 00:09:10 like he may calm down now because I think that he might be a reasonable human being. Well, have to see you make a very good point i also need to look up myself on youtube just like more about like this whole thing you're talking about too because i remember we got that question earlier on the season i didn't i think to terris point you would think a reasonable person would see what happened and go okay eddie is not doing this supernatural stuff eddie's innocent he didn't he didn't uh you know he didn't uh take out chrissey rather so in my mind though i think what's and again And usually I'm wrong on the predictions anyways.
Starting point is 00:09:47 For the most part, sometimes I get it right. I think what's going to happen is what Jason just witnessed there in the water, I think he's going to think that because Eddie was within five to ten feet of the incident, some kind of satanic ritual. It's still happening around him. He was near Chrissy when it happened. He was near this incident when it happened. So it's all connected to Eddie somehow.
Starting point is 00:10:07 So he's not going to stop blaming Eddie and he's still going to keep ramping up the Gaston type of fear towards Eddie and the Hellfire Club. So I do not see that stopping in any way, shape, or form. I hope Tara is right. I hope I'm wrong. And I hope he sees the light of day and he's able to calm himself. But when we were in a fit of rage, and also when you're near the person you are blaming and
Starting point is 00:10:29 another incident happens, I just do not see logic having its way. Yeah, we shall see, baby. Jess Delange, I know we talked a lot in other reaction Q&As about the team ups like Dustin and Steve, iconic, Stephen Robin, Joyce and
Starting point is 00:10:45 hop but did you ever see a team up like joyson murray being so epic they're like chalk and cheese but i love their banter and how they compliment each other in these crazy situations who's your favorite new team up of the season so far i knew that i've said this at nauseam but i mean the duffer brothers and the entire writing team they just deserve so much credit for all these different types of units and duos that they come up with they're they're so good i don't know how they decide to come up with all right we came up with we came up with Dustin and Steve in this one. We're going to come up with this one, but I agree.
Starting point is 00:11:19 I think it might actually be, I'm not to try to be boring, but it might actually be Joyce and Murray. I've really enjoyed, like, they are so polar opposite. And I think those are some of my favorite types of team ups is the polar opposite ones. Like, Murray is, he's like a very bit, he's very cynical and a conspiracy theorist type of guy, at least that's how he was when we met him originally. And Joyce, she's just a happy, well, I mean, very paranoid, obviously, with what's happened with Will over the first two seasons, understandably so.
Starting point is 00:11:49 But very, like, when we met her, just a very happy-go mom at, you know, working type of mother in that sense. And it's like they couldn't be more opposite, but their interactions are golden. I love their dialogue and how they operate with each other and how they react to each other. It's just perfect. And the chemistry between Winona Ryder, and I'm so sorry, I don't know the actor's name who plays Murray, is so damn. good honestly like the casting in this show is perfect uh i can't think of one casting that i do not love but i that and i would say to uh robin and uh nancy i love that those two teaming up as well yeah that's what i was going to talk about is like i i was going to say what she forgot in
Starting point is 00:12:35 there is the the robin and nancy but i did talk about that in the last episode i also talked about joyce and murray because that was new newly they were together and they were together and just landed at Uri's and then they were they were passed out whatever so i'm glad that they made it they knocked him out um and i'm glad that it was finally now recognized by steve the team up between nancy and robin that he's like well i'm glad you guys are friends now you know um and that it all happened in front of robin steve they're all there going like it's platonic with a capital p and he's like you know we're not dating like she's not my i mean I would, but like, but he still didn't spill her secret, which he could have because Nancy is
Starting point is 00:13:20 right there and you know he still loves her. We can tell in that look that like she still is going to have feelings for him. He's an attractive guy and she has not seen Jonathan in such a long time and she's been in such close proximity with Steve and he's been really helping, right? He's like at the core of this group right now. And it was really sweet when he said like, baby we all get to hang out and Jonathan like when he comes back what it like that was just an awesome like place to put that conversation in there to where they can all banter back and forth and it's like very clear Steve is not dating Robin
Starting point is 00:13:57 they are platonic friends with a capital P and now we sort of get uh the vibe back you know with nancy and Steve but um I do think that Nancy and Robin's relationship has been the most fun for me lately in the new team ups it's awesome Yeah. All right, from Just Delange. No, I just read that one. Oh, you just read that one. I'm so sorry.

Starting point is 00:16:06 I'm loving these stranger things reactions. And I am so glad you two were, uh, the, the picks to do this. serious. Thank you. Appreciate that. We are too because we love it. How are you feeling about the development of Steve and Nancy's juice as Tara would say, by the way, we need a shirt of that over the course of the show and the slow burn rekindling of their relationship so far. I'm curious to see how it will play into the Nancy Jonathan dynamic as it's been established that they're on different wavelengths and haven't been honest with each other about how they feel regarding
Starting point is 00:16:38 their futures. Steve and Nancy as a duo quickly became a highlight of this season for me and I'm excited for you both to see what's in store for them. I mean, you were just kind of talking about that, right? I was. Yeah, I kind of just covered that. But I also am curious to see how it's going to play into the Nancy Jonathan dynamic because I get what you're saying that it's like they're on different wavelengths. And like I said, Jonathan has really changed a lot with Argyle where it's like he's not this like go getter that was working at the newspaper. his life has changed in a way
Starting point is 00:17:14 that I'm not sure would fit Nancy's lifestyle at this point and so I'm a little bit nervous about it but they're still giving us little clues like in the last episode Jonathan looked at a picture of him and Nancy and was like this this fond nostalgic
Starting point is 00:17:30 smile that like obviously still loves her still cares for her but man oh man we we really feel that chemistry through the screen with Nancy and Steve so it's they're toying with it here. The juices are flowing. They're really going. Yeah, I do love the chemistry between Nancy and Steve for sure. And I will say for Jonathan, we did touch a lot upon it about, you know, about smoking the
Starting point is 00:17:54 grass now that he's friends with Argyll. I think a big part of it too is he's had so much weight on his shoulders. He's the man of the family. You know, he doesn't have his father's not there to support them. And he's the man of the house, rather. And, you know, that's a lot of responsibility for a young man. So, like, to be able to just chill and calm down. And also, he's away from his girlfriend now, long-distance relationship. I can understand the urge to want to just, I don't know, I'm just going to chill and smoke. Like, I can understand why he's going through that phase right now.
Starting point is 00:18:25 But in this episode, when shit got real again, Jonathan was like, he, like, did what he needed to do. Like, he was keeping everything calm like he always does and was the go-getter you were talking about. And I appreciate that. When Jonathan needs to be responsible or do his thing, he, is the man. I love Jonathan so much. So that is going to create, and as much as I love Steve and Nancy, and it looks like
Starting point is 00:18:48 we're possibly hanging that way, it seems like we're heading for a love triangle here. And, you know, love triangles can be very nasty, and they can also be very fascinating when it comes to a writing perspective in an audience because we love all three of these characters. So it's like, what do we do here? And, you know,
Starting point is 00:19:07 I'm curious to see what's going to happen. We shall see. Dee, the Shadow. So sorry about the small mishap last week where I misremembered when Will grabbed his painting. No Problemo. This episode we get to see Nancy and Robin continue to work together. What are your thoughts in the fact that Robin seems to be the first friend that Nancy has been starting to make, because a woman since Barb has passed. Maybe that's one of the reasons she seemed a bit cold to Robin to begin with. What are your thoughts on this new duo? I thought she was cold. That's a great point. I didn't even think about that after Barb, but that makes total sense. and also too, I thought she was being cold to Robin because she was into Steve and she thought that her and Steve kind of had a thing going,
Starting point is 00:19:48 didn't realize that they were platonic with a capital P. But, I mean, thoughts about the duo, I love them. They work so well with each other. I think my favorite moment with them, besides how they were bickering with each other when she did think that her instead, that Robin and Steve were a little bit into each other, my favorite moment has to be when they were getting their way into the place to see Victor Creel. and they were improvising on the spot
Starting point is 00:20:11 and Robin did her thing but I love the way they compliment and work together their interactions are so good but that is such a great point you make about how she'd be afraid to have another female friend after Barb I mean there's some serious PTSD when it comes to that and I didn't even
Starting point is 00:20:27 think about that so really good point what about you? Yeah I think it's probably linked to both probably a little bit of the hesitation with Barb and then the feelings that she's still is lingering with Steve a little bit. But what I really loved in this episode is that when they team up, Nancy goes Robin and she just, she knows right away.
Starting point is 00:20:50 She doesn't even say like with me. She just goes Robin and they go upstairs. And then Steve is left with Dustin. And then they have that argument like, oh, so I'm boring you now, which is very, very funny. They find really great ways in the writing to add comedy and some levity to all the series. and, like, the horror of it. And I think that's what makes this just such a standout phenomenal show. Well, said.
Starting point is 00:21:14 You have to have levity in horror, I think. It helps break the tension a little bit. Yeah. And I think I've already talked about, like, the duo a bunch in the last question. So I'm definitely loving it. All right. Last question from Jay Rushden. What up, Jay?
Starting point is 00:21:31 From Tara and Andrew, Kate Bush and Stan Bush are not related. Both feature number one songs in 1986, oddly. I think Stan Bush. I love Stan Bush, actually. Does this remind you more of X-Men with Papa and mentor-like role? So we are off to find Susie. Weird. Question, what reject would you go on a road trip with? Huh. I don't know who I would do that with because they would probably get so sick of annoyed with me
Starting point is 00:21:57 that they would say, I don't ever want to work with you again. Who would I go on a road trip with? I mean, I'm basically on a road trip every day with Aaron. Flip with them, right? a year now I technically did go on a road trip with Greg and John when Greg got married a couple years ago right so there you go there so probably Greg and John right because they're your best buddies here kind of yeah we're all so I feel like we're all so close we could all just go on a whole like our road trip together but what about you yeah I was going to say like the
Starting point is 00:22:33 thing with them going off to find Susie we do have to remember She was the one that I believe did the grades stuff. Remember when she hacked into the Hawkins School System? That's why we're going to Susie. It's not just because that one time with the radio where they sing the never-ending story song, which was great, which feels like a lifetime ago. She is the only hacker that we know.
Starting point is 00:22:58 So I think it's really fun that they're bringing her back in that way when we haven't really seen her in a minute. So I am excited Although I do think it's weird But not really Because they are all aware Of who fix those grades That was Susie
Starting point is 00:23:15 And on the road trip I feel like I don't know We would just We would all go You know what I would do I'd be like I'll follow you guys In my car And we'll hang out when we stop
Starting point is 00:23:31 It's got to be Roxy The She Jex Yeah It most likely definitely most likely would be because at least we like the same music my thing with like road trips is if it's like completely
Starting point is 00:23:43 different music then I'm like oh god you know and then I would cat sit for you yeah because I love your cat they're adorable they're so cute they really are they're the best um well we love
Starting point is 00:23:58 this journey this season's incredible I'm obsessed with this show but this season is absolutely incredible and I can't wait to see what happens with just in general the backstory of bechna what happens with hopper after with the touchdown now and also we didn't even mention mike and will uh looks like will is in love with mike possibly it looked like there was a hint of that so i'm very curious that there are so many things that are have to happen here in the next four episodes or so because like he was saying it in subtext about like you know you're worried about like how someone's going to think about the truth or some of that so I'm like okay and then he had that poster that he made for for Mike and then so it seems that he's in love with him which I think is adorable but I'm curious how Mike's going to react to that because he's also in well he said I care for 11 but like he still love he probably still loves right so again possible another love triangle there we'll see there's just trying love triangles all over the place everywhere yeah but we love this show we love that you guys are
