Starting point is 00:01:44 It's one of my favorite parts of the review because you guys ask such interesting, insightful, thoughtful questions. And yeah, but before we get into that and all of its wonderful glory, Johnny Boy, how you feeling post-supertroopers too? I'm feeling good. This was delightful. I had a good time. No alcohol required.

Starting point is 00:02:03 Hey. It was just another heaping helping of Super Troopers with, I think, a very lovely and welcome edition of a bunch of other fun actors and comedians and whatnot. I thought that this, for what it is, and I mean for the gap between the two, it seemed like they didn't really feel very out of step with each other. I felt like this found somehow in an appropriately. silly way, but an appropriately like, okay, I guess kind of way. Like they've justified having a sequel and finding their way back into law enforcement and then having the hijinks with all the Mounties and stuff and, you know, they're busting up another drug ring and, you know, we get our fun in games. But, you know, this was, yeah, like, I feel like

Starting point is 00:02:49 I had a lot of fun with the first one and this one in some ways did exactly what you want a sequel to do, which is to, you know, harp some of the most classic bits of the first. first one bring back the dynamic that we love and then add on top of that and I'm I feel like they did you know yeah I heartedly agree dare I say I think I like this one more than the first I might I might prefer this one a little more yeah this one had me laughing constantly throughout through its ridiculous premise to the the bits and hijinks that we saw them you know part partake in like you said they also have the chemistry that we're accustomed to from the first one I felt like they stepped perfectly into these characters once more after so much time removed.

Starting point is 00:03:33 And it makes me wonder how much content and what are these other things that Broken Lizard has done outside of Super Troopers. Because, yeah, they all work really well together. They seem to have just, yeah, genuine chemistry. And I think that it was cool getting to see them not only together, but play with these newer actors or these newer people to the franchise like Arablow. Even the Sean William Scott and Damon Williams Jr. in the beginning, that whole scene was great. I love that part. Yeah, it was really funny. And Clifton Collins Jr. was in there, too.

Starting point is 00:04:06 Like, a lot of people seem like they just want to stop by and play. Yeah. You know, and it doesn't get in the way. Like, sometimes that can be like, oh, it's fun to see you, but like this is a mess. Whereas, like, here, it's like, it's loose, but it also maintains that spontaneity and that sort of, like, they even called him out. It was like, Stifler and Damon Wayne's Jr. And I'm like, yeah, it's like, people just want to come and have fun and do a sketch, you know, and I love that.

Starting point is 00:04:28 Like that's put to good use, I feel like here. Yeah, I wholeheartedly agree. I felt like, yeah, everybody knew the exact movie that they were in. And they fully embraced it. And is the premise the original conceit for how they become offers us again, ridiculous? Of course it is. But, you know, this whole reality they exist in is sort of heightened and ridiculous. And it does that sequel thing where it's like, it's not the exact same plot as the first one, but it's kind of similar.

Starting point is 00:04:54 Similar enough. Yeah. Well, and it's, I love the conceit of this because it's like, it is convoluted, but it's also like, it's appropriately silly, but part of the silliness is like, you didn't have to think this hard about it. Yeah. You know, and I appreciate that you did. Yeah. Yeah. No. And, and yeah, for some reason, this one works just like much better for me than the first one. I like, it was like, it was fun. It's like more streamlined. For sure. And it has, like, I didn't, you know, like the first one is an hour and a half hour and 45 minutes. But this one, I felt. I felt. I was like, it was fun. It's like, it's like, it's a hour and a half hour and 45 minutes. But this one, I felt. I felt. I felt. It was. It was. It was. It was. It. It. It. It was. It. It was. It. like sailed a little bit more smoothly. The momentum was always there. It didn't really ever drag. Yeah, where I felt like there was a little bit of a lull in the first movie. This one, yeah, I was laughing throughout the entire film.

Starting point is 00:05:39 Because I think in the first one, there was like the beginning was funny and there was kind of like some, some less funny stuff and had it's like really, really good stuff. But yeah, they knew exactly what they had and they played to their strengths. And yeah, that's the best thing you ask for for comedy. if you just you commit and you know it's it in in its commitment it is able to uh yeah succeed in its task yeah and i think like you know this one this one's more madcap in some ways you don't have like the romance story really going and i think that while i don't begrudge them that or anything and i liked i found foster and um and uh you know the the the blonde lady charming who's not really

Starting point is 00:06:18 in this movie like it's nice to see her for a second in here um you know but but at the same time. I'm like, it's not the movie that necessarily needs to slow down for this kind of plot. And so like the stuff with the manual tricky here is like flirts with that, but is way more by and large in service of the rest of the story rather than like a love detour.

Starting point is 00:06:38 Yeah, exactly. Yeah, and you know, Rabbit and the officer who turned out to be undercover. That stuff was fun. But yeah, like it wasn't serviced in the story. Yeah, absolutely. And I'm just glad Brian Cox came back to have fun. I just love that he's game for these. and yeah

Starting point is 00:06:54 I mean like you know Rob Lowe very fine I'd forgotten they did a good job making me kind of like forget to think of him toward the end right because they kind of had him like intermittently in the movie like he was there in the beginning and then we had the whole stripper scene and one other scene and then

Starting point is 00:07:10 yeah he wasn't he wasn't as as prevalent so I was like it was either Paul Walter Houser or or him that was a fun little cameo him and Farva yeah just like clocking each other as like yeah it's oh, you're like my Canadian doppelganger, American doppelganger.

Starting point is 00:07:26 It's so funny. Yeah. And yeah, like choosing like a bit for them all with the different drugs. And then especially, I think the most firmly ingrained one is the one with Thorny and the Flovis Cotia, which just is like a fun note for him to play. But it's not like,

Starting point is 00:07:41 it doesn't carry him wildly beyond the dynamics of the ensemble. So it's like nice and complimentary, even if it's silly and whimsical. And yeah, it's like any, everything, like they have that whole like weird, a kabuki man hallucination. It's like it's everything they do,

Starting point is 00:07:56 even the more crass stuff or even the more sort of raunchy stuff. Like there's always just like a good natured silliness to it that keeps it by and large from ever transcending into, I don't know, like tastelessness or anything off-putting. Yeah. Yeah, I wholeheartedly agree.

Starting point is 00:08:11 And yeah, Will Saso, Tyler Labine and then the third guy like, I loved watching them. They were very fun in here as well. With all, like, you got like an entire array of wacky Canadian jokes and isms. And two, I mean, Tyler Labine is in a lot of stuff that, like, you know, if you watch the CW and things like that

Starting point is 00:08:29 or like lots of movies, like Canada, we do a lot of Hollywood in Canada. And it's so it seems like they got some Canadian comedians. I think Tyler Bean is probably Canadian. Maybe we'll sassau, too, and the other guy, like, so, you know. Yeah, Tyler Labine was one of my favorite shows growing up. I've not seen him many years called, I think, Reaper. Yeah, I saw his face on those buildings.

Starting point is 00:08:50 Boards, man, all the time. Yeah, dude. And I was like, oh, man. And, I mean, we watched Tucker and Dale not long ago, which I adored. And he is so great in that movie. That's right. And it makes me hope now that, like, characters we saw here, or at least the Mounties could show up in part three or something like that.

Starting point is 00:09:04 I would love that. Yeah. And, two, like, a nice way to go back to, like, a classic kind of comedy. It's another sort of, like, police academy or, you know, like, not exactly jocks versus nerds because, like, they're both in different competing law enforcement. But yeah, it's like that 80s style sort of like, ah, we're all trying to get one over on each other, but then there's a bigger

Starting point is 00:09:25 conspiracy that we have to come together to solve. It's classic, but also a good vehicle for what their comedy is. Yeah, no, and I think they did it well. Dare I say they did it better, because I feel like I was more endeared to the Canadian officers than it was the American officers in the first

Starting point is 00:09:41 movie. Yeah, I would say so. And, too, I mean, like, I think they even got a smoother group dynamic among the American ones, too. And how far off it's into all that and how they all interact with the chief and blah, blah, blah. And I think something about at least these two movies and this one, building on the first one, they have a good grip for my taste on like there's just enough actual structure to put this together as a real movie. And it doesn't feel like no one edited this. Right.

Starting point is 00:10:09 You also feel like there's a lot of spontaneity and there's a lot of stuff that is quirky just based on the personalities. Like there's other stuff that is like other more wordy or other kinds of. kinds of jokes. But I think they come up with a good blend of something that's hard to do and a lot of people want to do, which is like it's a sketch movie, but with a loose plot. And I feel like it's just enough of each. Yeah, they've designed it just enough loosely and loosely enough to be able to allow us to have more time for the goofy things.

Starting point is 00:10:40 Yeah. Yeah. Well, oh my gosh, guys. Well, it looks like we have only a couple questions here today. So, oh, further ado, let's get into them. Starting point is 00:12:14 you all right we got dewey i hope i'm saying that right uh how do you guys find the comedy in this movie i personally think it's very inconsistent hope you're doing both doing well uh sure i mean like this is the kind of movie that will certainly be hit or miss for some people like this kept me laughing a pretty good amount but yeah i mean it depends on what your flavor of comedy is and there's a certain kind of there are a few kinds of comedy at play in this movie but this is a certain handful of comedic flavors, and I can imagine them definitely not being for everybody. And this is a kind of comedy that you have to kind of be

Starting point is 00:12:51 just charmed by the silliness and the personalities, partly to be on for the ride. Like, if you're not viking with it, you're probably not going to get caught by much else, you know? Whereas, like, some comedies could transcend if you don't love the characters as much, maybe the writing or whatever, blah, blah, blah. But, yeah.

Starting point is 00:13:08 Yeah. Dude, I think I have to disagree with you there. I feel like, obviously with a lot of comedies, there are going to be stuff that makes you laugh and stuff that doesn't make you laugh. But I feel like the first ones felt a little bit more inconsistent for me as far as the rates in which I was laughing. And I felt like I was laughing throughout where I would notice in the first one there'd be like kind of gaps where it wasn't laughing as much. But yeah, something about this one really worked for me. And I'm happy that, you know, that it did. And yeah, I hope you're also doing well, do we?

Starting point is 00:13:39 Because you deserve to do well. Absolutely. You're a Super Trooper just like us. Yeah. On Patrol. On Patrol, baby. Okay. Jaden Rhodes, thank you for chiming in. This movie was one of those legacy comedy sequels.

Starting point is 00:13:52 I'm curious which one was y'all favorite. And the least favorite? My personal favorite, mainly because it's a soft spot for me is Anchorman 2. My least favorite is probably Zoolander 2. And I'm curious after this movie, if y'all are excited for Super Troopers 3. Hmm. Say definitely excited for Super Troopers 3. Yeah, for sure.

Starting point is 00:14:11 Legacy comedy sequel Oh, that's... Look up all the legity legacy comedy sequels. Let's see. Does bad boys count? I mean, I guess the more recent ones, you get a big gap in there. I mean, I thought, Bill and Ted based the music.

Starting point is 00:14:29 Bill and Ted is a comedy, I suppose, is other things, but it's largely a comedy. And I like that movie pretty good. I don't know if it would be necessarily the best one. Because there's stuff you could theoretically make better. about that but I still thought it was like pretty good for a legacy sequel. I haven't seen Zoolander 2. Anchorman 2 I like to watch again. I haven't seen it in a long time so I remember it that well. I saw it the once and I remember not quite liking it as much as the first one and and you know laughing at some stuff but thinking there

Starting point is 00:14:58 was just like so much. Oh, of recent memory the naked gun the newest one with with Lianneeson. I want to see that. It's really good. It's really funny. I want to see that very badly. Golly. That was a really good legacy sequel. And then we're going to get a couple in the year here. We got a Space Bowl 2 coming up. And then we got a new 21 Jump Street coming out as well.

Starting point is 00:15:22 Coming to America was okay. I didn't see, yeah, I didn't see coming to America. I didn't see any of that. This is a hard question, actually. I feel like I've seen some legacy sequels. I mean, I'm thinking like Axel Foley, Axel F, I thought was a pretty good, you know, it's kind of run

Starting point is 00:15:39 of the mill, structure. by today's standards as to how those kinds of movies go. But I like that movie pretty well. That's a toughie, though. That's a real toughie. I mean, scary movie I enjoyed, but I wanted to be better. Does American Reunion count? Yeah, sure.

Starting point is 00:15:57 American Reunion was pretty great. Yeah, I would say maybe. That was 2012, though. That came out a while ago by these standards. It came out after what we, it came up before, I would say, yeah, what we know now to be the wave of legacy. You know, that, yeah, because, I mean, that was at least a good gap after. It was almost a decade removed.

Starting point is 00:16:17 So, you know. But goodness. I mean, yeah, it's like the best legacy sequels that come to mind for me or like in other genres. Like, comedy is, yeah, it's really hard. It's a tough thing to return to, really. Because I consider the bad boys movies to be action comedies. Yeah. And I like the, the, um, a deal in Belal.

Starting point is 00:16:40 one, at least the third one. I haven't seen the fourth one, but I like the third one a lot. I like both the third and fourth one. I think they're, yeah, that's one of those franchises that came back and did legacy sequels and they turned out to be just as strong, how better than the OGs? Yeah, and I mean Chumanji, the new ones

Starting point is 00:16:57 are comedies based on the original that's less of a comedy, and at least, you know, I thought those were pretty charming. I don't love Jumangi movies, but I do think they're fun. Naked Gun's the one I want to see the most, yeah. Yeah, naked gun's great. And I've heard Trainspotting 2 is good, but that's also not a comedy.

Starting point is 00:17:13 Yeah, I need to see both of those. Yeah. Goodness gracious, though. I'm going to have to keep my ear out. Recommend us ones. I guess for me, Bill and Ted Face the music is probably my favorite, or that's the one that comes best to mind. And then worst, I'm not even sure, honestly. The best and the worst one?

Starting point is 00:17:29 Ooh, I don't even know what the worst one would be. Can you go back to the worst list up there? Because that's what the worst one was, right? Yeah. Yeah, I mean, dumb and number two gets brought up a lot at Zoolander. to Anchorman to and coming to America all get brought up I mean this is where it's just

Starting point is 00:17:46 general. Oh, we also watched Happy Gilmore 2. That was fun. Happy Gilmore 2 is decent. I know a lot of people had different differing thoughts about it, but I enjoyed it, generally speaking. I never saw either Joe Dirt movie. I didn't know they made a second. Yeah, I haven't either.

Starting point is 00:18:03 Going to America 2 was okay. I never saw vacation. Never saw vacation. Yeah. What? This is the world. Oh, yeah, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice. No, this is like a ranking of best two. Oh, I see.

Starting point is 00:18:14 So this is actually, uh, yeah, among the better ones here. Super Troopers 2 is their second best, apparently. Um, but, um, but it's, I like Beetlejuice too. It has its problems, though. It's fine. It's, yeah, there's a lot of stuff to appreciate in Beetleju's too, but it's, uh, it could, again, it could be better. It's not slam dunk. I don't know what the worst one would be.

Starting point is 00:18:33 I mean, I know a lot of people hate the Lander, too, and I probably haven't seen a lot of the ones that would categorize as the worst. Yeah. I wish I had a better answer for you. Yeah, it's not a comedy. I know a lot of people don't like Joker 2. You know? That's not even a legacy sequel.

Starting point is 00:18:47 I think it's more interesting, but yeah, it's also a mess of a movie. For sure. Okay, so I wanted to do one thing before we get out of here. And we're going to do the Rotten Tomatoes game. Okay, okay, okay, okay. So I don't know. Oh, God. So I'll do the first one first.

Starting point is 00:19:02 56% critics. For the first one? Yeah. No, oh, the first one, 62% critics. Yes, close. eyes close them so you're going 52% yeah it is 37 okay that and audiences that actually makes 90 is 90 okay now for two all right then close them 20 25% and super troopers too what do you say 90 for audience so i'll go like 27% for critics 35 okay and 64 audiences did not

Starting point is 00:19:38 like this one as much. Wow. Wow. So we're in the minority for liking this one more than the first one. I guess so. Let me see really quick. Let's just see if there's any interesting IMDB trivia before we get on out of here. Yeah. All right. AMDB. Yeah, man. Oh. Wow. This was Indie Go-go. No way. They surpassed their goal in just over 24 hours. Holy shit. It was greenlit. Not bad. How do they get the third one late? Do they do the same thing? Did Indie Go-Go? I haven't heard indigo in a while i don't it's like kickstarter

Starting point is 00:20:28 by coconut peat from broken lizard club dread that's fun wouldn't it caught that haven't seen it uh and yeah two of the three mounties are tyler o bean and will sasso are Canadians. So the other guy was in Canadian face. Right. Film went through several drafts of the script. The only piece of the first script to remain in

Starting point is 00:20:46 the film was a bit about Farva taking talking about which chewing gum he prefers. Jesus Christa. Wow, a lot of changes then. Yeah. Oh yeah, there's a bunch of references and stuff. Yeah, I was going to say the Fred Savage scene after the credits was filmed on with Sterea Lane from Desperate Housewives that looked

Starting point is 00:21:01 very familiar whilst watching it. Similarities to Roblo's characterization character from his role in Youngblood, even his final fight with the trooper with taking teeth out, genital shaving, and fighting dirty by pulling jumper slash jersey over opponents had during the bra

Starting point is 00:21:17 a bunch of Rob Lowe reference isms in there too. Yeah, I've never seen that movie. Nor have I. Wow. Well, guys. We did it, you guys. We did the thing. We watched Super Troopers 2.
